We‘re cleaning up our act. Since 2020, we have been using marine gas oil with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 % both in our main cruising areas, such as the Arctic, Antarctic and Kamchatka, and in all other regions as well. This means that this fuel is used all year round by the entire fleet. By voluntarily foregoing heavy fuel oil completely, we are reducing sulphur emissions by 80 % and particulate emissions by 30 %. Built with foresight
Not just up close, but at the heart of the experience The new expedition class offers more open deck space than any other expedition ship. Hear the ice crack as you stand on the bow and watch the bizarre formations pass by below you. Float above the ocean on two extendible glass balconies on the Sun Deck and enjoy perfect views. Feel yourself to be part of nature. The Observation Deck is also built with “foresight” with various observation levels and mounted binoculars. Inside, the Observation Lounge shows just how

comfortable pioneering spirit can be, as you enjoy the 180-degree view through the floorto-ceiling windows. The ship’s shallow draught and great manoeuvrability take you to the heart of experiences in a way large ships can’t.

Environment and sustainability
We take responsibility Experiencing the beauty of our planet brings certain responsibilities along with it. For that reason, our aim on cruises with our new expedition class is to preserve vulnerable habitats and raise awareness of how we can cultivate a respectful attitude towards flora and fauna. It is also important to us that we comply with stringent hygiene and prevention standards so that we can protect the health of everyone on board.
E N E RGY E F F I C I E N CY
E N V I R O N M E N TA L M A N A G E M E N T AND COMMITMENT Long-standing membership of IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) and support for wellknown organisations that aim to protect the Antarctic. All of our Antarctic cruises must be approved by the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt). As a member of AECO (Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators), we promote responsible, sustainable and safe tourism in the Arctic. We are involved in the Clean Up Svalbard project around Spitsbergen. Together with our guests, we gather rubbish and ensure it is disposed of correctly. The TUI Care Foundation works with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises to support people and the environment in cruise destinations around the globe. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers sustainable excursions that take place on foot, by bicycle or using forms of transport with low CO₂ emissions.
Reduction in fuel consumption of around 30 % thanks to optimised route management and avoidance of top speeds. Reduced fuel consumption thanks to the newly developed hull. The PROMAS rudder with a special propeller also helps reduce fuel consumption and therefore lower emissions.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Modern seawater desalination technology and certified biological sewage treatment plants for the treatment of water, as well as appropriate disposal of sewage sludge. Waste separation prior to disposal on land in accordance with the MARPOL regulations, ensuring less impact on the environment. Power management and decreased electricity consumption thanks to energysaving light bulbs and LEDs. Ballast water management to ensure that flora and fauna are not carried into regions where they are not indigenous.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has been reducing unnecessary plastic on all its ships for many years already.
EMISSION REDUCTIONS Since 2020, we have been using marine gas oil with a maximum sulphur content of only 0.1 % both in our main cruising areas, such as the Arctic, Antarctic and Kamchatka, and in all other regions. This means that this fuel is used all year round by the entire fleet. By voluntarily foregoing heavy fuel oil completely, we are reducing sulphur emissions by 80 % and particulate emissions by 30 %. Nitrogen oxide emissions reduced by 95 % thanks to SCR catalysts. Below-average CO₂ emissions according to our EEDI certificate. The bow thrusters and stabilisers run on eco-efficient ecological oil. Our expedition fleet is equipped for cold ironing and makes use of this technology where possible. Partial use of electric Zodiacs with quiet and more eco-efficient motors.
CO2 OFFSETTING Offset the CO₂ emissions on your cruise: Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers this in conjunction with the climate protection organisation myclimate. More information is available at www.hl-cruises.com/climate-calculator
