Carnival Spirit drops American perks Australians won’t have access to several benefits currently offered to passengers on Carnival Cruise Lines ships. IN its journey to become more Australian, Carnival Spirit has shed a few American features, including some good ones. While many of the ship’s planned enhancements are positive (such as introducing Australian currency, power points, food and drinks), other changes may be less warmly welcomed by locals. By the time Spirit moves to Sydney in two weeks, it will no longer offer many of Carnival Cruise Lines’ signature services. Ditched benefits include permission to bring onboard one bottle of wine on the day of embarkation. Every other CCL ship, including Carnival
Silversea makes history FOR the first time in its 18-year history Silversea’s Silver Cloud, Silver Whisper and Silver Spirit entered the same port on the same day. The historic event took place last week, and saw the three vessels converge on Corfu, the second largest of the Ionian Islands. Both Wind and Spirit cruised into Corfu as part of seven-day sailings in the Greek Isles, whilst Silver Cloud joined the duo as part of her 12-day Mediterranean voyage from Venice to Barcelona. “Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian islands, and a land rich in history and myth,” Silversea said in a statement. “It was likely the last stop for Homer's Odysseus on his fabled journey back to his homeland of Ithaca. “For Silversea, Corfu will always carry special significance as the port that hosted an important milestone in the company's own unfolding story,” the company added.
Spirit until now, allows adult passengers to pack a 750ml bottle of wine or Champagne in their carry-on luggage to drink in their cabins or in the restaurant during their cruise. But for people boarding in Australia, no alcohol can be taken aboard. In addition, the line’s new all-you-can-drink alcohol package, which was being trialled on Spirit, will not be available in Australia. The package, known as My Awesome Bar Program, costs Americans US$42.95 per person per day, plus an automatic 15% tip ($6.44), and includes glasses of selected wines, beers, spirits and cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic drinks. However, the deal dries up when the ship starts operations down under. Other cancelled services include Bon Voyage liquor, which allowed people to pre-order bottles of spirits, wine and beer to be delivered to their cabin, and Bon Voyage gifts, which is used for buying presents for other passengers. Australians are also unable to pre-purchase soft drink packages, specialty restaurants and “fun dollars” (CCL’s version of a gift certificate) before their cruise. When CW asked Carnival Cruise Lines to explain why Australians would miss out on these seven benefits, a company spokesperson replied: “The back-of-house systems for the Australian program are different to those in the US, so we are not currently set up to offer a number of the services you mention. “As we launch our Australia program, we will be conducting a continued analysis of what may be of interest to our Aussie guests and subsequently may roll out additional offerings in the future.”

SILVERSEA’S Silver Cloud will undergo an extensive stem-to-stern refurbishment this month which will include a three-week dry dock at Fincantieri's shipyard in Palermo, Italy. According to the company, the work will see Cloud’s interior decoration completely renovated (including her suites, public spaces and dining venues). Highlights of the makeover include a refreshment of her lobby with an updated colour palette of warm earth tones that will be carried throughout most areas of the ship with the installation of stylish new carpets, wall treatments and artwork in the corridors, staircases and public spaces; as well as a change up of the color scheme in The Bar to contrast with the rest of the vessel with cool shades of teal, brown and beige. The Panorama Lounge will also enjoy new furniture, carpet, curtains and reconditioned wood flooring; whilst the vessel’s dining options will also be enhanced during the work, with Le Champagne scoring an upgraded entrance design, new wine displays, a redesigned seating layout, and new wood flooring, fabrics and window treatments; and La Terrazza's having its buffet area remodeled and new banquettes installed along the walls, offering greater seating flexibility, including more tables for two. The Restaurant will be refreshed with new window treatments, chairs and reconditioned hardwood flooring; whilst The Grill will also be installed onboard as the existing Pool Bar and Grill area is expanded with additional seating, a large overhead awning, and the removal of the central stair unit, which will be replaced with a curving corner staircase.
lunch and dinner. Previously, Azamara served only complimentary wine with meals. Another improvement to be introduced next European season, one “AzAmazing Evening” will be offered to every passenger per cruise. These nighttime events are expected to take place on shore at a venue that showcases the local culture, food and drinks. According to the company website, the free tour could be “a night at the ballet at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St Petersburg or a polo match and reception in Saint Tropez”. The evening tours also highlight Azamara’s point of difference in that its ships often stay overnight or until midnight at many ports in Europe. To make way for this new program, the cruise line will cease its 50% off shore excursions offer. Azamara fares also include gratuities, selfservice laundry, port shuttles, concierge services and bottled water, soft drinks, specialty coffees and teas throughout the ship. The new all-inclusive alcohol policy will be effective from 27 March 2013 on the Quest and 15 May 2013 on Journey. For details, see www.azamaraclubcruises.com/2013enhancements.

HOLLAND America Line has responded to Veendam’s recent vessel sanitation failing mark, saying the “the score resulted largely from one area of the ship’s overall operation”. The surprise vessel sanitation inspection was conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Inspection, and saw Veendam score 77 out of 100 (a score of 86 is considered as a passing grade). Infractions cited by the CDC included several refrigerators and dishwashers which needed repair, a cook with facial hair doing food preparation without wearing a beard restraint, and some issues relating to food storage. “All the issues raised in the report were immediately addressed and have now been corrected,” a statement from Holland America Line said. “We have also ensured that our management and training practices in this area have been refocused to ensure continued success. “We are expecting and desirous of a re-inspection in the near future,” the company added. HAL was also eager to point out that since 1996 Veendam has received passing scores on 32 CDC inspections.

3 2 5 7 + 2 / ( LOVE the water? Why not surf to work. One English water lover, Oli Barrett, did not let local flooding put a dampener on his week, instead taking advantage of the situation and surfing to work. Barrett was able to surf the flood waters by using his friend’s 4x4 as a tow boat, to which he hitched a line which he held as the car navigated the road and pulled him along. “There were four of us and we thought we’d have a change and do some outdoor surfing,” he said. “You don’t normally find yourself surfing along a road. “A few drivers passed us smiling and giving us the thumbs up,” he added.

Port Review: Maré Island, New Caledonia by Michael Mihajlov at Carnival Australia The best kept secret of all of New Caledonia’s islands, Maré is about as close to paradise as any will come in their lives. Maré Island (or Nengone, as it is locally known) is rooted in history and its locals share a profound and almost mystical link with their natural environment. To explore this place is to journey into the most resplendent of the Pacific Islands. Though shopping and dining options are scarce, Maré encapsulates what it truly means to get away from the every day and relax while experiencing something new and inspiring. Its beaches are postcard worthy; its waters are perpetually warm; and its vistas are unforgettable. Maré has just a single resort, run by the local province and access is limited to a few flights from Noumea making this port a really special cruise destination.
Michael’s Quick Tips Best Months: It’s pleasant all year round with an annual average of 23.5oC. February is a little warmer with an average of 28oC and August milder at 18oC but the sea temperature is warm throughout the year at 22-25oC. Don’t Miss: Head over to the picture-perfect Yejele beach. Pick up a fresh coconut off one of the local vendors and kick back on the beautiful white sands at this gem of the Pacific. Tour or Not: This one is all about the natural beauty so explore the island by foot or hop on the shore tour transfer Mare natural aquarium to visit Yejele beach. Sightseeing: You can enjoy a walk to the Kanak memorial to see a fine example of local carving or check out the local handicrafts and artworks at the market but there are photo opportunities in every direction you go. Food: Maré’s specialty is local seafood, including lobster, often cooked in coconut milk. There’s also a dish called Bougna, a traditional Melanesian-style dish of meat and yams wrapped in banana and taro leaves, cooked in coconut milk over hot stones. Language: French and Kanak dialects. Currency: The local currency is the Pacific Franc but the Australian dollar is also accepted at market stalls (A$1=93pf). Shopping: Being the best kept secret of the Loyalty Islands, there’s not many shopping opportunities here though there is a market and information centre near the landing spot. Cash or card: Cash, definitely. Credit cards are not accepted on the island, except at the one resort. Take small amounts of local currency ashore.
Royal Princess’ top secrets PRINCESS Cruises has leaked details about new ‘top deck’ features set to debut onboard Royal Princess when she launches in June 2013. Currently under construction, the 3,600guest ship will have an emphasis on outdoor entertainment options, with her top deck set to include a dramatic SeaWalk, as well as pool areas, an evening light show and a larger Movies Under the Stars poolside theatre. Measuring over 18 metres in length, the glass bottomed SeaWalk will extend more than eight metres beyond the starboard side of the ship, and 40 metres above the ocean. A SeaView Bar will also extend over the ocean for guests to enjoy a cocktail and a birds eye view of the waves. Adjacent the SeaWalk will be Royal Princess’ Fresh Water Pools area, which will include a host of lounging options (such as garden-style furniture and chaise lounges), as well as palm trees, and two fresh water pools bookending an island area between them. The pool area will also play host to live games and music, and of an evening the poolside island will become a stage to showcase an interactive sound and light show featuring dancing fountains. On select evenings, the island will be transformed into an outdoor dance floor for the Ultimate Deck Party, replete with DJ spinning from two decks above. Meanwhile Royal Princess’ poolside theatre screen will be 30% larger than the ones on other Princess vessels, and will play movies, sporting events and concerts for guests reclining on chaise lounges complete with pillows and free popcorn, or while relaxing in the ship’s giant whirlpool spas.

Port Review: San Diego by: Louise Goldsbury The Port of San Diego kicked off its 2012-13 cruise season last week with the inaugural call of Disney Wonder. As part of a new series of itineraries inspired by Pixar animated movies, it was the first of four visits that the 2,700-passenger ship will make to the Californian city in September and October. Silversea, Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Costa and Crystal also include San Diego on cruises to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and the Panama Canal, usually on the way to or from Los Angeles or San Francisco. After three days here, following a ‘Mexican Riviera’ cruise on Carnival Spirit, I can recommend my top seven things to see and do. 1. USS Midway The first thing cruise passengers will notice is that theirs is not the biggest vessel in port. Further along the pier is this massive aircraft carrier, which was part of the US Navy fleet for 47 years, spanning the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. Now open to the public as a museum, the best part is the massive top deck, with 25 restored fighter jets and bombers. See www.midway.org. 2. Balboa Park One day is hardly enough to explore this site’s 15 museums, art galleries and gardens. Highlights include the San Diego Zoo and Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum. This is a shore excursion worth booking, or catch the jump-on-jump-off Old Town Trolley. See www.balboapark.org or www.trolleytours.com/san-diego. 3. Gaslamp Quarter At 4pm, head to 5th and 6th avenues for happy hour. The Gaslamp Quarter is buzzing from early evening to late night at popular venues
USS Midway aircraft carrier
such as Quality Social, Side Bar and Croces jazz club. I enjoyed the seafood at Blue Point Coastal Cuisine. On your way back to the ship, note the Victorian buildings, preserved from the days of the Wild West. In the late 1800s, Wyatt Earp ran three gambling halls in this former red-light district. 4. Coronado Island Connected to the mainland by a long bridge, this resort town has an excellent beach, shops and cafés and plenty of mansions to admire. Hotel del Coronado, the world’s largest hotel when it was built in 1888, provided the backdrop for the Marilyn Monroe film, Some Like It Hot. 5. Beach life If you feel like a swim or a waterfront stroll, head to Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. The two beaches are connected by a 5km boardwalk, which is popular with bikini-clad roller-skaters and shirtless joggers. Ocean Beach is more laidback and home to Hodads’ legendary burgers and South Beach Bar & Grille’s selfproclaimed world’s best fish taco. 6. Old Town A touristy but lively district, with lots of restaurants, markets and museums. Go here for lunch and souvenir shopping, then relax with one of the great local craft beers or margaritas. 7. Point Loma The Cabrillo National Monument marks the spot where the first European explorers set foot on the United States west coast in 1542. The lookout has unbeatable views of the city skyline, mountains and Pacific Ocean, as well as a visitors centre and historic lighthouse. For more information, see www.sandiego.org.
