Be sure to keep your questions coming to expert@cruiseweekly.com.au. For the answers to Adam’s questions today, click on the Facebook link at the end of each question. Q1 from Elizabeth Pilley: I joined Crown and Anchor on my last RCL cruise on Serenade of the Seas, 14 nights Alaska, 2008. I was so excited to receive the Crown and Anchor magazine, after receiving three, they stopped. I emailed RCL and they said they had just made it for USA and Canadian residents, they said we would have our own here. I have seen no sign of that, I was so disappointed. Please give us ozzies, what our friends up north have. I keep in touch with friends we have made on our cruises. Q2 Helen O’Donoghue: I love cruising with RCCL. I will be onboard Rhapsody this October and am travelling with family and friends who have a couple of younger children. I understand there is now a nursery for 6mths to 3 yrs which sounds great. Can you tell me if there are facilities to bathe these younger ones?

Oceania Cruises christens Riviera The newest upper-premium cruise ship will offer voyages in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. GREEK-American celebrity chef Cat Cora officiated as godmother at a gala ceremony held in Barcelona over the weekend to name Oceania Cruises’ new Riviera. As a traditional christening, Deacon Ricardo Rodriguez-Martos, of Apostleship of the Sea, was also on hand to bestow blessings on the vessel, a sister ship of Oceania’s awardwinning Marina. Among the 1,300 guests were the cruise line’s Founder and Chairman Frank Del Rio, its President Kunal Kamlani, and the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias. “Today, the baton as the world’s premiere ship has passed to Riviera,” said Del Rio. “I’ve repeatedly said that it was going to be hard to improve on Marina’s perfection, but I didn’t say it would be impossible. “And we have done just that – improved on perfection,” he added. The event included renditions of the Spanish and American national anthems, a tribute to the ship’s home-ports of Barcelona and Miami. Riviera will offer 20 Mediterranean sailings this year before heading to the US in November for a series of Caribbean cruises. Following the christening cruise, Riviera begins a 10-day maiden voyage from Venice to Athens, departing tomorrow (16 May). During its European season, the ship will visit ports in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Turkey Croatia, Cyprus, Montenegro and Monaco, as well as Morocco and Israel, with maiden calls in Cephalonia (Argostoli), Motril (Granada) and the Canary Islands. A 14-day ‘Classic Crossing’ from Barcelona to Miami, departs 15 November 2012, and after its Caribbean season, on 28 March 2013, Riviera will return to Europe, sailing from

Tere Moana gets set to wow Australian guests THE team at Paul Gauguin Cruises is preparing to welcome its second baby into the fleet, the 45-cabin Tere Moana. Chatting to CW during a whirlwind trip to Australia, Paul Gauguin’s VP, Product Planning and Revenue Management, Oscar Abello described the 14-year old vessel as “yachtlike”, adding that the company is “very excited to branch out and offer a wide variety of itineraries”. The company will take delivery of the vessel in October this year, after which she will go into drydock in Lisbon for a multimillion dollar makeover which will involve a total redecoration including a new colour scheme, redoing the woodwork in all her cabins, laying new carpets shipwide, new decor, new furniture, new bedding, and the addition of balconies to eight staterooms. Following her refit the vessel will sail out of St Martin on 29 December for her inaugural seven-night Caribbean voyage. Moana’s itineraries will be a departure from the company’s usual fare of highly popular Tahitian sailings onboard Paul Gauguin, and will include seven-night Caribbean cruises and 13- and 14-night Panama Canal voyages out of St Martin; as well as two 14-night Transatlantic crossings; seven-night sailings between Barcelona/Rome, Rome/Venice, Venice/ Athens, Athens/Istanbul, Athens/Rome, Lisbon/Barcelona, and Barcelona/Malaga, as well as several seven-night roundtrips from Rome and Istanbul. “We constantly have guests asking us for other destinations and so we are doing itineraries that we believe will be appealing to

our clientele,” Abello said. According to Abello, part of the attraction of Moana will be the fact that she can call into the smaller ports, giving guests the opportunity to visit rarely explored areas, as well as the larger, more popular destinations. Featuring all outside cabins, spacious public areas, two restaurants, including L’Etoile and La Veranda, and meals designed by a two-star Michelin chef Jean Pierre Vigato, Moana will offer an all-inclusive cruising product, meaning its upfront cost will include all meals, activities, entertainment and an open bar, (shore excursions, boutique shopping and spa services however are not included). “We are very excited about the product, it’s a beautiful ship, and we can’t wait to see her after her renovations,” said Abello. And it seems its not just the cruise line that is excited about Moana’s impending launch, with Paul Gauguin’s Australian representative Wiltrans confirming that Australian cruisers are already lining up to get onboard. Interestingly, in terms of demographics, Australians currently make up the second largest market for the company’s Paul Gauguin (7-8%), behind North America (70%). Celebrity chef Cat Cora raised a laugh from audience members at the Christening of her Goddaughter, Oceania Cruises’ Riviera, with her quip “I want to say as the mother of four boys- finally I have a girl! And isn’t she a beauty”. According to Oceania Cruises Founder, Frank Del Rio, Cora was chosen by the cruise line for the honour of Godmother because “we wanted someone whose life achievements, whose passions and whose values aligned with those of the Oceania brand”. “Being a cruise line for foodies, we quickly zeroed in on this remarkable woman,” he added. Port Review: Hong Kong, China by Cruise Sales Manager, Rodger Condon Hong Kong, a place that has etched its place in many a visitor’s heart still remains one of the most popular destinations for any traveller to the Orient. Other cities vie for 1st position, but there’s just something about Hong Kong that beckons a 2nd, 4th, or 8th visit. Hong Kong often anchors a cruise itinerary allowing you the wonderful opportunity to extend your stay. The main cruise ship dock is the multi-level shopping complex, Ocean Terminal, located in the heart of Kowloon and only steps away from the famous shopping street, Nathan Road, and overlooking the Star Ferry with incredibly frequent services to whisk you across to Hong Kong Island. There’s a new state of the art cruise terminal being built where Hong Kong’s old Kai Tak Airport runway used to be, due to be opened mid-2013. I would suggest that Ocean Terminal will still be favoured, purely because of its unbeatable location, however the new cruise terminal will undoubtedly be far superior for embarking and debarking procedures, which is sorely needed. You must be sure to be on deck on arrival or departure as it’s incredible. Hong Kong is easily explored on your own. Step ashore and you can literally shop till you drop with shopping streets stretching as far as the eye can see. I recommend researching at least a little before arriving as shopping extends from Kowloon (where the ship is docked, part of mainland China) and across to Hong Kong Island. There are markets, electronics, fashion, arts and more and some areas are better than others for what you’re looking for. Importantly, Hong Kong is so much more than shopping. Honestly, sightseeing opportunities could have you here for days and the dining is fabulous. There’s a great subway, taxis are everywhere, the ferry services are terrific and it’s easy. Take the Peak Tram skyward for awesome views, enjoy an exciting day at the races, play with your family at Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park, take a traditional fishing junk ride at famous Aberdeen, explore the multitude of markets (Temple Street, Stanley, Jade, Ladies, Flower and bird markets), rest awhile in a beautiful Buddhist monastery like Po Lin, or visit the quieter side of Hong Kong in the New Territories.

IT’S been a big month for Scenic Tours with the launch of Scenic Crystal, as well as its decision to go all inclusive for its European river cruising in 2013 (CW 01 May), and the announcement that it will makeover Scenic Sapphire, Scenic Pearl, Scenic Ruby and Scenic Diamond (CW 08 May). But the news just doesn’t stop flowing from the company, with new details surfacing about its plans for the launch of a new Scenic Tailormade handheld GPS system for European river cruising next year. Pictured below in the hands of Scenic’s Emma Davie and Aleisha Fitler, the handheld system (currently in trials) is designed for cruisers who would prefer to sightsee individually, away from the group. Built by itours to Scenic’s specifications the light-weight system was three years in development and is created to host guests on individual sightseeing tours. The device features headphones and visual maps, and provides easy to navigate directions and informative, entertaining commentaries on landmarks and points of interest based on preferences selected by its users, such as Gardens and Nature; Food and Wine; Arts and Culture; and Action and Adventure. As an added bonus, the system can be attached and detached from bicycles, allowing guests who wish to ride around attractions the ability to make use of its services. Booked guests who want to download the program onto their smart phones, or iPads, will also be able to do so, but it will only be available to them for use during their cruise. MEANWHILE, commenting in the wake of Scenic Crystal’s launch, and the impending launch of Scenic Jewel next year, Scenic’s Founder Glen Moroney said that the company would most likely not be needing any more ships in the foreseeable future. “We don’t need anymore [ships], probably,” he said. “As the [river cruise] market keeps expanding, I think for us the future will be more about destinations rather than capacity,” he added. For more Scenic details see www.scenictours.com.au.

Cruise ship Godmothers: a transforming tradition by: Louise Goldsbury Appointing a godmother to christen a new ship is one of maritime’s longest standing traditions, but in recent years, cruise lines have opted for a wide (and usually publicity-seeking) range of modern twists. Celebrity actors are among the most popular godmothers of the latest vessels. Joanna Lumley, famous for her role as the Bollinger-guzzling Patsy on ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, seemed the perfect person to smash a bottle of Champagne against one of Viking River Cruises’ new longships. This month, screen legend Sophia Loren named MSC Divina in France. Even local TV personalities have made the cut. Avalon Waterways, an American river-cruising company, last year called upon the host of Australia’s ‘Today’ show, Lisa Wilkinson, for the debut of Panorama. Singers have also hit the right note, from Twiggy (Seabourn Sojourn) to Mariah Carey (Disney Fantasy) and Dame Shirley Bassey (P&O’s Adonia). Country music artist Reba McEntire (Norwegian Epic) did things differently when she pushed a digital Champagne bottle on the movie screen in the ship’s theatre, triggering a video of it breaking against the hull. The craziest use of technology was employed by Royal Caribbean for Allure of the Seas, which was launched by a 3-D animated character: Princess Fiona, from the kids movie ‘Shrek’. It was also the first company to use more than one godmother for a ship, when seven women were recruited to represent the seven sections of Oasis of the Seas. They included singer Gloria Estefan,

Princess Fiona- Allure of the Seas

actor Jane Seymour and Olympic skater Michelle Kwan. Costa Deliziosa had five godmothers from five different countries, including an Australian travel agent, to reflect its five new entertainment options. The first New Zealander to receive the honour was Olympic boardsailer Barbara Kendall MBE, who presided over proceedings for the renaming of P&O’s Pacific Pearl in 2010. However, you don’t have to be a star or a champion – some cruise lines prefer to reward their most loyal customers. Orion Expedition Cruises showed its gratitude to three past guests (Jill Bennette, Laurel Norris and Shirley Turtle) to jointly name Orion II last year. And last month, June Spargo, who has taken 63 trips with Vantage Deluxe World Travel, served as godmother of the River Discovery II. Other cruise lines hand the duty to the management’s family members, such as Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre, whose sister Silvia named Silver Spirit. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ Antoinette Tollman was both godmother and namesake of the S.S. Antoinette, and she also worked as the project’s lead designer. ‘Toni’ is the oldest daughter of Stanley and Beatrice Tollman, who own and run the company. The ultimate godmother has to be Queen Elizabeth II, who christened Cunard’s third ship to bear the name Queen Elizabeth. Remarkably, the monarch was present, as a 12-year-old, at the naming of the first Queen Elizabeth, named by her mother in 1938. Another royal, Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, also named a superliner: Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam. As always with the cruise industry, the question is what, or who, next?
