tions, especially in the line of the sexual revolution. Indeed, we observe that this was foreseen by Our Lady at Fatima in 1917. In her message to the three seers, she spoke of immodesty, impurity, and bad fashions. She called men to repentance, reparation and amendment of life as means of declaring the party over. We must also fill the void left by our rejection of the present party culture. In this sense, the American TFP’s recent book, Return to Order delves deeply into the nature of a Christian social order and invites those practical-minded Americans to join together and plot a course for the future. Above all, we must be convinced that any return to order involves a return to God. With this conviction, we can be confident that God and His Blessed Mother will come to aid of those who rally to their cause. In the end, we have the certainty confirmed by Our Lady herself at Fatima that the final result will be the triumph of her Immaculate Heart. n

seen the culture of unrestraint become a culture of death. Part of this rejection has consisted in locking into a life and death struggle with aging pro-abortion advocates who use every means and judicial recourse to continue the slaughter of the innocents. Pro-life Americans have won stunning victories by shutting down innumerable clinics and raising a new pro-life generation to guarantee our future. We need to take these efforts one step further by rejecting the culture of unrestraint in all of its manifesta-

f there is an image that corresponds to the state of the nation, it would be that of a cruise ship on a never-ending cruise. On each of its multiple decks, we find every modern comfort and entertainment. The bands are playing, the theaters are full, the restaurants crowded, and the boutiques well stocked. The atmosphere is outwardly marked by fun and laughter. Everywhere there is dazzling spectacle, amusing games, and gadgetry. There is always one more joke or one more dance to keep the party going. The cruise ship gives an almost surreal impression of fantasy, unrestraint, and delight. Cruises are normally celebrations for special occasions, but

this party cruise is different. Over the decades, many have come to see the cruise not as a holiday but as an entitlement; it is no longer an exceptional event but the norm. Rather than leave the ship, many seek instead to prolong the party on board without worrying about a final destination, or who will pay the bill. Even the best of cruises reaches a point of exhaustion. Even the best of parties can last only so long. Behind the festive veneer, things start to run down. Scuffles and disagreements break out among passengers. Crew members quarrel and cut corners. Financial problems curtail the festivities. A storm brews on the horizon. Yet no one has the courage to suggest that the party should not go on. Thus read the introductory paragraphs of the book, Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to Organic Christian Society—Where We’ve Been, How We Got Here and Where We Need to Go. most joins with Americans nationwide as we stand up and repudiate the sin of abortion. However, we also invite all to consider the future of our cruise ship society and reject our culture of unrestraint that so facilitates the slaughter of innocents. Indeed, the abortion mentality often comes from the frantic search for self-interest and gratification. We are immersed in what can be called the “frenetic intemperance” of our times, where everyone must have everything instantly and ef-

This attitude becomes all the more urgent because this elusive search for happiness is now in crisis. We face economic, political and social problems that cloud the horizon like a gathering storm. The sad effect of our culture of unrestraint is that it leads to our own destruction. We can see it tearing our economy and our society apart. It is eroding our Faith. It is killing our unborn children. It is not enough to simply stop the music or return to a more restrained version of the party. Rather, our task consists of calling our fellow Americans not only to a total rejection of abortion but for a return to a Christian order.
A return to order is not only necessary but possible. Indeed, many Americans have already seen the futility of prolonging the party that has led to such much unhappiness and so many broken lives. They have

return to such an order. It would only make sense given that order involves the arranging of things according to their nature. The foundations of society are to be found in the natural institutions of family, community and Faith. Thus, this social order that comes from our human nature itself is valid for all times and all peoples. Contrary to the socialist model, this social order is not imposed; it cannot be regulated, stimulate or legislated into existence. Rather it is firmly based on the orienting principles of natural law, the Ten Commandments and rooted in the social institutions of family, community and Faith. And although it applies to everyone, the Church is its best and most secure guardian. This Christian order is not something new but is a return to our distant roots. It is where we came from. It involves returning not to an historical past but a return to a core of ordering principles that brought us so many of the institutions that are now fading—rule of law, representative government, the traditional family and Christian charity. When such an order rules, it gives rise to those norms of

fortlessly. Hollywood and the media further encourage us to throw ourselves headlong into an elusive search for “happiness” grounded in a frustrating materialism and an unbridled promiscuity. While we have made great advances in the fight for the unborn abortion, we must also recognize the major role of our culture of unrestraint in promoting abortion. If we are to turn the tide (as we must), we need to have the passion and courage to defy our cruise ship culture, and say enough. We must be willing to declare the party over.

way to explain the present moral crisis. As a nation, we are in the same dilemma as those on a neverending party cruise. We can see abortion and other moral evils as major consequences of a culture of unrestraint like that found in the cruise ship’s party atmosphere.
