Q & A with Lady Saint Erin Richardson Q: What are your goals as a student athlete for this year? A: “A big goal of mine is no matter how busy I am with school and basketball, I need to always find time for God. Others include being the very best I can be in both the classroom and the court.”

Q: What is the atmosphere like with the team in the locker room? A: “The atmosphere is fun and exciting. It's a comfortable one at that feels like my family away from my family.”

Q: How long have you been playing basketball? A: “I've been playing for as long as I remember, I believe just before kindergarten.”

Trevonte Marshall and Niem Stevenson show off their skills in the slam dunk competition.

The judges make their decision on the scores of the slam dunks.

The Lady Saints celebrate their win of the three point competition against the Saints.

Q: What are your biggest challenges as a student athlete? A: “My biggest challenges are getting enough rest and eating healthy. I'm always in a rush and sometimes grab things that are unhealthy. I definitely have a hard time getting to bed as well.”

Q: Do you have any specific things that you always do before you play? A: “Before I play I like always listen to my "pump up" songs of course. I also write the word "cadestrong" on my left wrist and "PFB" on my right. Cade strong is for one of my best friends brothers who died two years ago, just a reminder to play strong like him. PFB stands for "Play For Brown." One of my coaches in high school was diagnosed with breast cancer and thymoma two years ago as well, so just a reminder to play for her. Finally I always pray right before I leave the locker room.

Q: What is your daily routine as a student athlete? A: “As a student athlete I'm pretty busy. I wake up and go to work, then attend my classes, eat lunch, and I try to get a quick nap in before practice. Then I workout for a couple of hours, shower, eat, do homework, and sleep! It's like that every single day.”

Q: How are you enjoying your experience so far playing basketball here? A: “I'm enjoying it a lot! I'm not going to lie, at first it was tough. College is a whole different game than high school! I've made the adjustments and have fun playing with the girls on my team!”

Q: What motivates you to do your best? A: “I'm a competitive person and I was lucky to have a lot of success in high school, so the fact that I want to increase in the success. Also, my family does too, I don't want to let them down! But probably the biggest thing is thinking of the little girl that used to dream of being where I'm at today.”

Q: What do you expect this season to be like? A: “I expect this season to be fun. I feel like we are coming together more and more and learning to play better together. I think we can achieve whatever we want if we keep working hard.”

Halloween

PumpkinCarving Contest

s t n e Ev Halloween arrives at Seward Halloween is alive and well at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School with a variety of events ranging from donuts to pumpkins, which means fun activities to celebrate. The Saints bookstore for Halloween had their annual dunking 4 donuts on Friday Oct. 23. This is a game where the bookstore ladies hung donuts from the ceiling, so students would try and bite them in hopes of getting a free donut to eat. Some donuts were closer to the ground, which made it easy to get, but some donuts were really close to the ceiling so students got on each other’s shoulders to reach the donuts. Also for Halloween, Wade Lyon, the Director of Student Life and Leadership hosed the annual pumpkin-carving contest from 9 to 4 Monday Oct. 26. The pumpkins that the students carved out were grown at

They voted on their favorite pumpkin. The student with the most votes would win $75, second $50 and third $25. Other activities for Halloween are Trick or Treat Street from 6 to 8 on Thursday Oct. 29. The event will be hosted by Lyon at the Student Union and will freature SCCC/ATS clubs that are willing to participate. Trick or Treat Street is an alternative way for kids to get candy while getting college students to participate. DIY Halloween Costumes

Tania Valenzuela Crusader Staff

Halloween is here and sorting through hundred’s of costume ideas could be quite the drag, especially if you’re not a halloween person and you’re being dragged to a halloween party you don’t want to attend. Fortunately there are simple and quick costume idea’s that are not expensive at all. Here are a few suggestions for your halloween costume.

Stoplight

Ana Rodriguez

This is a fun and easy idea for halloween. This costume gives you a bit more of an opportunity to be fun and quick. What you need: - 3 Pieces of paper - Red, yellow, and green markers - Black clothing - Tape and scissors To achieve this fun costume all you have to do is first, use each marker to draw and color a big circle on each piece of paper. Then, you cut out and tape each circle to your shirt and that is all! You have officially been converted into a stoplight. Ana Rodriguez

Scarecrow This costume idea is cute and could be achieved with household items. You will need: - A rosie lipstick - A sun hat - Torn Jeans - Boots - Eyeliner - A flannel shirt/Scarf All you have to do is rub the lipstick on your cheeks and use the eyeliner to draw out the stitches on your nose and mouth. Then you just put on your flannel shirt, jeans, boots, and your sun hat and there you go! A quick, easy and cute scarecrow look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Perla Camacho

This look is a tad bit more extensive but still easy, cute, and could be done within a few minutes. What you need: - Ninja Turtle shirt - Tule and ribbon the color of your chosen turtle - Boots - Jeans/leggings - Headband of the chosen color While this look looks like it would require a lot more time, the only tedious part of this costume is making the tutu. What you did is first, you cut multiple strips of the tule to tie around the ribbon that will go all the way around your waist. Once you have tied every piece of tule onto the ribbon, wrap it around your waist and tie a bow in the back. After that all you have to do is complete the look by wearing your TMNT shirt, putting on your headband and wearing your usual pair of jeans/legging accompanied by some boots. There you have it, you have now been recruited as a TMNT. Congrats!

Nudist on Strike Jose Paz

This idea is perfect for the “I just woke up 5 minutes ago and needed a costume” type of people. For this costume all you need is: - A piece of printer paper - String - A marker - You’re everyday outfit To get this look, all you need to do is use the marker to write out “nudist on strike” on the piece of paper, punch two holes at the top of the paper, and tie the string around it so that you could wear it was a necklace. Combine the sign with your everyday outfit and BAM! You’re a nudist on strike.

Jose Paz

When Life Gives You Lemons This is another super quick and easy costume idea. This is also perfect for the “I’m only at this halloween party because I was forced to be here” type of people. What you need is: - Lemons - A bowl - A marker and paper - String This is a clever and funny idea that could be accomplished within minutes! All you have to do is write “Life” on a paper and tie it around your neck. Finally you grab a bowl and dump some lemons in it and you are now life giving people lemons.

fall blues

We asked a couple of students and staff members what they did to beat the fall blues...

BEAT THE

“Spending time with quality family and friends and enjoying a glass of egg nog.”

–Jevyn Dean Voss student and staff

You may or may not be familiar with the term “fall blues.” Fall blues refers to the changes in mood based on the changes of climate, in this case, going from summer to autumn. This phenomenon has been proven to happen, but here are some ways to keep your spirit lifted and to not fall into the blues. 1.) Go thrift shopping Thrift shopping is a great way to shop when you’re on a budget, and with the weather going from hot to cold, sweaters are a must. In stores such as rue21, Forever21, J.C. Penney Co. or Stage, the average sweater will be about $20 but you can find great sweaters at local thrift shops for less than $5. 2.) Make a bonfire Warm yourself up with a bonfire. Gather some friends and eat some s’mores. Great places to visit and set up your fire are Meade Lake State Park, 40 minutes from Liberal, or Arkalon Park which is 15 minutes from Liberal. 3.) Make an uplifting playlist This fall there is great music coming out; Adele, Drake, 5 Seconds of Summer, the list goes on. This fall make sure to create a great playlist to help keep you motivated to go through this autumn.

“Take a nap.”

4.) Watch your favorite autumn show or movie Now that it is October, our favorite fall shows are being put back on air, if they haven’t already made their comeback,. In this chilly weather cozy up with a blanket and your favorite show. 5.) Buy yourself a hot chocolate or a good cup of coffee After a long night of homework and studying, a hot cup of coffee will help you get through the cold mornings. Although buying a cup of hot chocolate or coffee every morning can get expensive, once in a while doesn’t hurt. If money is too tight and can’t give yourself that luxury, the bookstore has coffee Tuesday when they give free coffee and tea.

“I like to sit and play my guitar, and make a fire, hang out with my girlfriends, play a game of spoons, read a good book, spend time with family, go shopping, go shopping and go shopping.”

–Celeste Donovan, dean of student services

“You get a boyfriend and you cuddle.”

–Sheena Hyun student

6.) Read a book To beat the fall blues, you can never go wrong with a good book. Forget about your worries and emerge yourself in an alternate universe.

Eurydice brings love story to Seward Arthur Courbis Crusader staff A love story from Greece comes to Seward County Community College/Area Technical School on Nov. 5, 6 and7 at 7:30 p.m. “Eurydice” is based on a Greek myth. This is a love story but for the first time, it is told from Eurydice’s perspective. The play director, Gloria Goodwin, explains why she chose this play. “This is a really popular production right now. It is fun, it is different and it has very funny moments. I do not want everybody think that this is a sad tragedy. For one thing, we have three talking stones that are very sarcastic and very funny. It has its sad moments and its touching moments, this is a great story telling. I’m always fan of Greek story and take a new look at it,” Goodwin said. She says that she chose a play that will give the audience a new experience. “I just try to look for different experiences that are going to be a challenge and fun. Something we did not have yet,” Goodwin said. It is a play featuring strong and funny moments. Aubrey Holt, who plays Big Stone, enjoys her time at rehearsals. “ I’m always very exited to come to rehearsals , I love the people I’m working with and I love my character They are all very smart and easy to read and they read people well. As far as issues of

people not getting it we haven’t really had that . It has been a really great time and really great experience to be able to work with everyone on the production,” Holt said. This is a short play; the estimated time is 80 minutes long with no interruptions. After the auditions, the show had a total of seven actors. The rehearsals are five times a week from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Actors are all students . “It is very hard work and efforts to do a show. I expect them to be all in and make it the best they can make it. At the end of their experiences, I’m so proud in what they accomplished. It is my goal that they feel they give their all. The enthusiasm, excitement, and the talents of my actors always surprise me. I’m very happy when people choose to be involved,”Goodwin said. The production crew has tried different ways to spread word of the play to the community including using social media and signs. “Once people come, they see how fun it is and they will come back,” Goodwin said. The play is about Eurydice and Orpheus. Orpheus is the son of the god Apollo and he likes music and the young Eurydice loves books and thoughts and ideas. The two of them fall in love. According to the myth, Eurydice dies the day of their wedding and Orpheus tries really hard to get into the underworld to get her back.
