The picture that comes to mind when most people think of angels are the images of cupids, Putti or other winged creatures in the clouds. However on a careful study of the bible, we get to find that there is a lot more to angels than the meek or even perhaps weak representation of them portrayed in traditional art. For the purpose of this article, we would be limiting our study to what is immediately obvious from the scriptures. To do otherwise would be presumptuous and distracting from our objective of understanding and receiving the ministry of angels. To have the right view of the nature and purpose of angels, we must at the onset of this study, be ready to do away with any outlandish beliefs about angels that we have had for perhaps a long while. We would need to have an open mind to really receive insight and knowledge of the same from the scriptures.
What the bIble says about angels
Angels are spirit beings created by God prior to the creation of the earth. In Job 38:4-7, we read that the angels (i.e., morning stars or sons of God) sang and shouted for joy when the foundations of the earth were laid. Some other passages of the bible, notably, Nehemiah 9:6; Psalm 148:25 and Colossians 1:16-17 also speak of their creation. The word, “angel” is taken from the Greek word, “angelos” which means messenger – This, as it were, being in keeping with their role of serving God and man. As representative of God, they are wise, mighty and holy. This is except for the fallen angels called demons who are evil. Angels are superior to man in knowledge, power, speed and so forth, but are not omniscient, omnipresent nor omnipotent (2 Peter 2:11; Matthew 24:36; Daniel 10:10-14 Though angels often appear on earth in the form or image of man, they differ from men in that they do not die nor
5
marry (Luke 20:35-36). Scripture teaches us that angels have their own will, hence Satan and a third of the angels (demons) were cast out of heaven for rebellion against God (Rev. 12:4ff; Isaiah 14:12ff; Ezekiel 28:11ff. Peter 2:4). Angels are innumerable in number and as opposed to the images in traditional art depicting them as winged infants, angels in the bible generally always appeared as adult male, except for an order of angelic creatures called Cherubim who usually position themselves before the throne of God, and then a similar kind called the Seraphim. These two orders are pictured in the bible as unusual-looking creatures with wings who sometimes appear simultaneously with features of both man and beast (Revelation 4, Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 10:1-20).
theIr mInIstry roles to god, chrIst and man
Angels have always played the vital role of serving both God and man. They can be described as God’s messengers who execute His purposes on earth. Angels like every other created being are subservient not just to God the father, but also to Jesus Christ, i.e. God the Son (In Hebrews 1:5ff, angels are commanded to worship Christ).
mInIstry to chrIst
Apart from worshipping Him, angels also played a vital role in the ministry of Christ. They announced His conception, birth, resurrection, ascension and will ultimately herald the second coming of Christ. See ~ Matt 1:20-21; Luke 2:10 – 12; Luke 24:23; Acts 1:11; Jude 14; Luke 1:13 and 36; John 1:51 Also clear about angels from scripture is their role of serving man and by so doing, executing the purposes of God on earth. In the book of Hebrews 1:14, a rhetorical
6
question is asked (and answered) concerning angels: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” This role is buttressed in the dialogue which Jesus had with His disciples in the early part of Matthew 18, particularly in verse 10 where He said: “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven….” Scripture intimates to us how several people received diverse types of help from God in various situations through the ministry of angels upon prayers being made to God. A notable example is when Daniel had an angelic encounter with two prominent angels whereby they came to give him encouragement, strength, knowledge and skill (Daniel 9:20:24 and 10:10-21). Similar help was given to the Apostles in the book of Acts 5:19-20 after he released them from prison, and again to Apostle Paul as they feared an imminent shipwreck (Acts 27:23-25).
the mInIstry of angels Include:
Administration/Revealing of the word – By this I mean they are involved in bringing God’s word/law to man. This is evident in Psalm 68:17, Acts 7:52-53, Hebrews 2:2. They are also involved in bringing the understanding and interpretation of the law of God. Dan 8:15 – 27; 10 and 11 Guiding and Communicating the will of God Angels are used by God in the communication of His will, thus providing rare insight and guidance to individuals or groups of people. When Herod the king was looking to
destroy the baby Jesus, it was an angel that guided Joseph away from danger, appearing to him in a dream ~ Matthew 2:13. Angels also gave instructions to Philip in Acts 8:26, and to Cornelius in Acts 10:1-8. Provision of help and care - In the New Testament, after the resurrection of Jesus, angelic assistance was necessary rolling the stone away from the tomb to let the women and the apostle into the tomb. Matthew 28:2. Angels provided food for Hagar in Genesis 21:17-20, Elijah in 1 Kings 19:6, and Christ after His temptation Matthew 4:11. Protection/Deliverance in and from Danger – They were numerous instances where angels were used by God as agents of protection and deliverance for His people. A good example is righteous Lot who was rescued from Sodom and Gomorrah by two angels just before the Lord destroyed the land with fire and brimstone from heaven. Other examples include the protection of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, in the furnace and lion’s den (Daniel 3 and 6). I can add that though the bible does not in any place tell us that every believer has one guardian angel to himself, you can be sure that in time of need, God will make His angels available to His people if necessary. Executing Judgment and Chastening – Angels were used in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, they were also used in judging Israel’s enemies (2 Kings 19:35). Angels were even used in the chastening of God’s own people, as in when King David numbered Israel. (2 Sam 24:13). In each of these examples, not a multitude of angels were need. Only one or two effected the work
7
to be done. Receiving the ministry of angles Having understood more about angels, we can take comfort in knowing that help is available to us as children of God in time of need even through the ministry of angels. It must however be noted that these intervention in scripture by angels did not come because those praying specifically asked for angelic help. We do not find any suggestion in scripture that we should pray to angels, and neither do we find anyone directly asking God for their intervention (…even though we can do this: Matthew 26:53; Acts 12:57). We must recognise that our help can come either by means of angelic ministration or in an entirely different way. I make this point because at various times in history there has been an inordinate focus on the “help of angels” as opposed to the help of God. This has lead some to what comes just short of angel worship. Angels are not to be worshiped (Colossians 2:18, Revelation 19:10; 2:29). In having our needs met, what is important is that we have the assurance of the help of a loving father in heaven. It is His prerogative as to how He chooses to help us when we need it. Dear friend, in closing, I would like to bring your attention to the utmost importance of having a relationship with God before you can really begin to enjoy the benefits of angelic ministration. Similar to the passage quoted earlier in Hebrews 1:14 which tells us that this form of help is primarily for “those who will inherit salvation”, i.e. those who have received Jesus Christ is their Lord and Saviour, the bible also tells us that “The angel of the LORD encamps all around those
who fear Him, and delivers them.” (Psalm 34:17) God wants to bless you. He wants to be directly involved in meeting your needs. Allow Him today to start by first meeting your ultimate need, and that is the forgiveness of your sins. Would you allow Him to do that? To receive forgiveness of sin and enjoy His blessings invite into your life now by saying a prayer along these lines. Lord God, the bible says, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ to die for my sin. I confess that I am a sinner, and ask you to forgive my sins. I believe in my heart that Jesus died and rose up from the dead, and I now receive Him as my Lord and Saviour. This I pray in Jesus name, Amen! If you prayed this sincerely, you are now a child of God. Contact me on the email below for support as to how to grow in your new walk with God.
