organisation, have launched a joint venture called Grassland Alliance. The Grassland Alliance aims to help farmers who manage their herds on grazing systems. Joint work between NCBC and CRV will include their breeding programmes, research and development, and marketing and sales. Therefore, this co-operation enables both partners to select and sell the bulls whose genetics best suit the local grazing conditions in different countries. It also means that both partners have access to a wider gene pool to improve and expand the products for the grazing market. This makes Grassland Alliance the largest and most specialised supplier of dairy semen fitting the breeding goals of grass-based and seasonal systems in the world. Fertility and efficient low-input milk production systems are the cornerstone of this Grassland Alliance.
The best bulls for fertility and grazing Pasture-based dairying systems are growing in popularity. The most popular areas are New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and South America with Europe and North America rapidly increasing. Pasture systems are based on seasonal milk production. Cows are milked during the grass growing season and dried off in the winter. This way, the peak milk production coincides with the best grass quality. In this system grassland management is top priority. The Grassland Alliance is a unique breeding initiative geared toward grass-based farming systems. A new joint venture in breeding genetics supports pasture-based producers. The perfect ‘pasture cow’ What is the perfect cow is dependent upon a variety of circumstances like climate, feeding quality and farm system. For farmers who run their cows on a grass-based system, fertility and efficient production, based on low-input rations, are universal points of importance. Fertility is very important due to the seasonal nature of this system. For optimal use of the grass, it is important that cows get in calf every year in the same period. So, the desired calving interval is 365 days. In Ireland for example, more than 85% of all cows calve down in the spring season. To help farmers breed their perfect ‘pasture cow’, CRV and NCBC have launched the Grassland Alliance. The genomic breeding values of young bulls from the CRV programme in western Europe and New Zealand and the NCBC programme are shared to give farmers access to the best bulls for their particular circumstances.

Grassland breeding programme in New Zealand CRV has been active in the grasslands market for 40 years through its NZ operation, CRV AmBreed. Four decades of breeding grassland genetics has generated in a lot of knowledge, experience and understanding how to produce the type of animal that can perform under the many challenges of a low cost, seasonal grasslands system.

The breeding goal covers production (43%), management (36%)and functional type (21%) to produce a robust, long lasting efficient converter of pasture into profit. From this, greater levels of production AND higher levels of fertility and longevity are achieved: The three critical elements of a profitable cow for grasslands-based systems. Good udders, improved capacity and robust frames complete the picture that’s called balanced breeding, a unique approach in NZ-grassland breeding. This approach understands that farmers have different requirements to meet the needs of their unique farming and management systems. Goal is to deliver farmers diversity and reliability in genetics, and a balanced, practical approach to commercial breeding that results in efficient grasslandtype animals. In this line the bulls offer fertility, outcross, longevity, functional type and efficient production. Why the difference? NZMI focuses on protein – the highest value milk component. And by selecting for protein, you’ll also get fat for a balanced increase in milk solids and the dairy cheque. Type traits of capacity, rump angle and udder overall are added to create cows that have the strength, form and fertility to stand up to the stress of high milk production year after year. Management traits are included to provide for faster milking and more easily managed animals with high fertility – they’ll be favourite of the herd! In a nutshell, NZMI breeds towards strong and capacious cows that are efficient producers of high value milk, with good shed traits, fertility and the udders to keep them profitably producing in the herd for longer. And those are the cows we all want! Breeding values for New Zealand bulls New Zealand breeding values and indexes for bulls are calculated by NZ Animal Evaluation Unit on behalf of NZ Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL) which publishes the information. NZ animal evaluation is an across-breed evaluation, with the average 2000-born cow being the base animal. The base animal has breeding values of zero for all traits and indexes of zero. NZAEL also publishes within-breed average breeding values and indexes for cows born in 2000. In its International Catalogue, outside of Europe, CRV AmBreed expresses breeding values and indexes for its bulls as deviations from the appropriate within-breed base animal.

Ireland the European home of fertile cows Ireland has a population of 4 million people and over 7 million cattle and a long tradition in livestock farming. Around 80% of agricultural area in Ireland is devoted to grass, hay and silage (3.4 million hectares), 11% to rough grazing (0.5 million hectares) and 9% to crop production (0.4 million hectares). Dairy production in Ireland is primarily from grass which means there is a very seasonal pattern of calf births in Ireland, with almost 60% of all calves being born in the months of February, March and April.

To maintain a very seasonal calving pattern, excellent fertility is of the upmost importance and this has been emphasised in the Irish breeding goal for over 10 years now. In the 1990s it became apparent in Ireland that although the breeding programmes were delivering extra production this was completely off set by the parallel reduction in fertility. Irish farms exploit grass in the diet of their cattle. They strive to develop grazing systems to maximise grazed grass in the diet of the cattle as this is the cheapest and most natural diet for the cow. The Irish breeding goal is defined by the Economic Breeding Index (EBI). This has been developed over the last 10 years to deliver profitability on dairy farms. The Irish proving system is among the toughest in the world, the evaluation system is farmer focused and provides an evaluation across all breeds for the dairy herd on the same base. The breeding objective takes account of the key drivers of outputs and costs on Irish farms. The key drivers production, fertility, calving, cull value and health & maintenance are practically the same the world over. The Irish EBI is constantly updated to reflect the better understanding of the likely market for dairy products in the future. The Irish EBI places a large emphasis on fertility and production which is delivering a more productive cow with the ability to go in calf and survive for a number of lactations. The breeding programme is delivering a balanced cow which has a low maintenance cost and is capable of producing high quality milk. The measure of fertility in Ireland is the interval from one calving to the next and the percentage of cows that last from one lactation into the next. With Ireland’s seasonal production system it is very important that cows calve every 365 days and last for many lactations. The penalty for a cow that falls out of the strict calving period is culling, which explains the high emphasis on fertility in the index. It is important to achieve improved fertility without sacrificing production, so production is still weighted strongly and many of the top bulls for EBI are strong production improvers as well as elite fertility improvers. The economic breeding value sub-indexes As you can see the EBI is the sum of 6 sub-indexes which are in turn the sum of related traits. Production: Production accounts for 38.1% of the total EBI. It reflects the sire ability to produce daughters that have particular milk production characteristics. As you can see from the trait emphasis protein is the most heavily weighted accounting for 22% of the overall index. There is also a multiplier for fat and a slight negative multiplier on milk volume. This model reflects the desire to produce high quality milk rich in the nutritive components. Fertility: Fertility accounts for 34.8% of the overall index and is made up from two very important traits for farmers wishing to exploit grassed grass. Calving Interval is expressed in days more (+) or less (–) than the base, therefore a bull who scores –5 will on average deliver daughters that calve 5 days earlier than the average cow. Survival is a measure of the ability of a bull progeny to survive from one lactation to the next. Calving: The ability of a cow to go back in calf is highly influenced by characteristics like calving difficulty, gestation length and ability to calve. These traits are calculated in the delivery of an overall index. Direct calving difficulty indicates the likely difficulty in calving a cow pregnant by the sire. Maternal calving difficulty is a measure of the ability of the daughters of a bull to calve. Beef: Male calves and the eventual salvage value of the carcass of a cow are important to include when considering the total economic contribution the daughters of a bull can make. Because the beef contribution is only realised a small number of times in the life of the cow the index contributes to 7.2% of the overall index. Maintenance: To ensure we have the most efficient animals a maintenance sub-index is included which reflects the extra cost or saving of feeding the daughters of a bull just to maintain body weight. Therefore the index will penalise bulls whose daughters cost above the average to maintain. Health: The current index looks at somatic cell count and lameness under the health sub-index. The health traits will grow in importance and number over time. As you can see the Economic Breeding Index (EBI) is designed to deliver cattle that are optimally suited to a seasonal grazing production system. We aim to deliver a cow to suit your system and not ask you to adapt your system to suit our genetics. If your current genetics are not working perhaps, you should talk to us.
