BETTER COWS | BETTER LIFE
CRV CANADA Dear reader, In front of you lies the complete catalogue of CRV Canada. With the expanding of CRV in Canada and the access to many breeding programs in the world we have decided to combine all our products in one catalogue since December 2013. In this August Dairy Guide we are explaining one our two new breeding indexes “Better Life Health” and “Better Life Efficiency”. In this edition you will find more information on how to select on bulls that give more efficient daughters. Next to those two new indexes you will find information on the wide portfolio of CRV including our program from the Netherlands, based on NVI, but also our TPI program from the United States. CRV is also active in other breeds than Holstein and CRV Canada is offering also bulls from our Fleckvieh program from Germany and our Jersey program from the USA. Our exclusive partner Viking Genetics is present in this catalogue with their offer of Viking Red and Scandinavian Jerseys. A special section is reserved in this catalogue to inform you about the CRV Robot Ranking index. With more than 3,000 dairy operations using milking robots in the Netherlands, CRV has a wide experience in providing bulls that sire daughters for automatic milking systems. CRV Canada is growing rapidly and now has representatives and distributors in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and Alberta. If you would like to receive more information about CRV Canada or if you wish to be in contact with one of our representatives, please send an e-mail to Canada@crv4all.com or contact our representatives directly. Breeding for more efficiency CRV has developed two breeding tools – Better Life Efficiency and Better Life Health – to support producers breeding for a more efficient and healthy herd. In this article we focus on Better Life Efficiency. By using the CRV top bulls for efficiency, producers can realise an extra profit of €250 per cow life. One of the most important issues for modern breeding is efficiency. With Better Life Efficiency producers have a tool to breed a more efficient herd. But what does this higher efficiency mean? A herd with a high efficiency can produce more milk per kilogramme of feed, the cows stay efficient during their whole lifetime and they are durable and environmentally friendly. An average cow (in the Netherlands) turns about 58% of her energy intake to milk. CRV is convinced that it’s definitely possible to increase the feed efficiency by 10% on most units by breeding for the right traits. Better Life Efficiency indicates the extent to which a bull contributes to more efficient milk production. As a general rule, productivity combined with longevity leads to high efficiency. A bull with a score of +5% generates a financial gain of €250 per cow life in an average herd.
More milk from feed With the breeding tool Better Life Efficiency producers can improve their herd for two different strategies. For producers who want to maximise the performance of their herd they can produce more milk from the same number of cows. They will be able to reduce feed costs and, at the same time, improve the
Better Life Efficiency: more milk from feed utilisation of natural resources. Units that do not wish to increase their herd size, but rather perform better with the existing herd, will benefit in particular from increased efficiency.
This allows the herd to produce more for longer using less feed. This is not only very profitable, but also environmentally friendly and sustainable.

But you can also see it from another perspective. As feed is valuable, the best you can do as a producer is to make as much milk as possible from one kilogramme of dry matter. Greater efficiency will increase your profit. So for producers who want to milk more cows, breeding with an eye on Better Life Efficiency will help them to produce more milk from the same amount of feed.
Energy converted to milk The breeding indicator Better Life Efficiency indicates how much of the energy taken in a cow’s whole life is converted into milk. The intake of energy is everything a cow eats and drinks during her whole life. Energy that is needed for the cow’s growth is factored into the slaughter value of the animal. The Table 2: How would changes in various factors affect Better Life Efficiency? situation bull A

energy needed for maintenance, both when the animal is being reared and during the productive period, is also taken into account. Figure 1 shows the formula that is used for this. The result of this formula is a percentage
Efficiency improvers: Snowrush and Debutant With +13% efficiency, Snowrush tops the black-and-white ranking for Better Life Efficiency, Debutant is the number one for red-and-white sires. Both are InSire bulls and descend from strong cow families. JHS Snowrush is a son of Snowman out of a Lead Mea. He combines efficiency with extreme high production, longevity and strong type. Texel Debutant is a Dakkar son out of a Roxy and his grandmother is a full sister to Scientific Destry rf. Debutant is a true all-round bull with production, type, health, fertility and longevity in one package. JHS Snowrush: top bull for Better Life Efficiency
between 0 and 100. The higher the percentage, the higher the efficiency. Better Life Efficiency will be shown as an average improvement or decline in efficiency of your cattle. The Better Life Efficiency of a bull may for instance be +8%. This means that the bull realises 8% more efficiency in its descendants. Since a bull always passes on only half of his genes to its descendants, you can count on a 4% improvement in efficiency for your herd.
High lifetime production The following breeding values are incorporated into Better Life Efficiency: – milk production – persistency – maturity rate – longevity – calving interval – body weight These factors all determine a cow’s efficiency. Cows with a high milk production, high persistence, high rate of maturity, high
longevity, short calving interval and lower body weight are the most efficient ones. If you look at these different indicators you’ll notice that most of them also have a relationship with high lifetime production. Therefore breeding for high lifetime production helps to increase efficiency. Of course the various bulls differ in their scores for the various breeding values. So a bull may achieve a high score for Better Life Efficiency thanks to his high scores for milk production and persistence. But a bull can also achieve high scores for Better Life Efficiency because his daughters have a lower body weight, a shorter calving interval and more longevity. If you want to work with an efficient herd in the future, you can start now. CRV has developed Better Life Efficiency for you. It’s a tool to breed efficient cows. Cows that have high production, last for a long time in the herd, and convert feed into milk efficiently.

ROBOT MILKING IN THE NETHERLANDS CRV is one of the largest AI companies in the world with offices and breeding programs in every corner of the world. The last 10 years CRV has developed itself from a Dutch-based export organization to an innovative world-wide player in the genetics market. One of CRV’s innovations was the early implementation of a Robot Ranking index, to define which bulls sire daughters that are more suitable for voluntary milking systems. This ranking is already present for quite some years and is used by many customers in the Netherlands. The country with the highest milking robot-to-cow ratio in the world. Almost 1 in 6 dairy operations in the Netherlands use milking robots, making it very important to breed for cows who are suitable for milk robots.
A short overview of the facts in the Netherlands are in the table below. MILKING SYSTEMS IN THE NETHERLANDS PER FARM 2010 2011 2012 Rotary Tie-stall Tandem milking parlour Robot milking system Herringbone parlour Swingover parlour Parallel parlour Total Total number of milking robot units (Source: Veeteelt.nl, January 29 2013)
CRV ROBOT RANKING The CRV Robot Ranking was developed to indicate bulls that are most suitable for milking in the robot milking systems. Only the highest bulls of CRV are given the R-indication for the Robot Ranking when they score well on their breeding values for milking speed, udder health, feet and legs, teat length and teat placement (front and rear).
