What is the Grassland Alliance? CRV and NCBC, Ireland’s biggest herd improvement organization, have launched a joint venture called Grassland Alliance. The Grassland Alliance aims to help farmers who manage their herds on grazing systems. Joint work between NCBC and CRV will include their breeding programmes, research and development, and marketing and sales. Therefore, this co-operation enables both partners to select and sell the bulls whose genetics best suit the local grazing conditions in different countries. It also means that both partners have access to a wider gene pool to improve and expand the products for the grazing market. This makes Grassland Alliance the largest and most specialized supplier of dairy semen fitting the breeding goals of grass-based and seasonal systems in the world. Important to mention is that not only efficiency is a key figure in these farming systems but also fertility. Therefore, fertility and efficient low-input milk production systems are the cornerstone of this Grassland Alliance. 4

grassland alliance Catalogue 2012

The best bulls for fertility and grazing Pasture-based dairying systems are growing in popularity. The most popular areas are New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and South America with Europe and North America rapidly increasing. In pasture systems that are fully based on seasonal milk production, cows are milked during the grass growing season and dried off in the winter. This way, the peak milk production coincides with the best grass quality. In this system grassland management is top priority. There are also pasture systems that are based on a year round milk production, in which cows are grazing all seasons. The perfect ‘pasture cow’ What is the perfect cow is dependent upon a variety of circumstances like climate, feeding quality and farm system. For farmers who run their cows on a grass-based system, fertility and efficient production, based on low-input rations, are universal points of importance. Fertility is very important due to the seasonal nature of this system. For optimal use of the grass, it is important that cows get in calf every year in the same period. So, the desired calving interval is 365 days. In Ireland for example, more than 85% of all cows calve down in the spring season. To help farmers breed their perfect ‘pasture cow’, the Grassland Alliance has been launched. The genomic breeding values of young bulls from the CRV programme in western Europe and New Zealand and the NCBC programme are shared to give farmers access to the best bulls for their particular circumstances.

Ireland the European home of fertile cows The National Cattle Breeding Centre (or NCBC) runs Ireland’s largest cattle breeding programme. NCBC was established in 2005 by Ireland’s biggest Artificial Insemination companies Progressive Genetics Ltd. and Munster Cattle Breeding Group, to operate their combined breeding programmes and bull studs. Together, these organisations account for 80% of semen sales and 95% of all milk recording in Ireland. The moderate climate with temperatures almost never dropping below 0°C and an annual rainfall of around 975mm make Ireland ideal for extensive grass-based dairy systems. Around 80% of agricultural area in Ireland is devoted to grass, hay and silage (3.4 million hectares), 11% to rough grazing (0.5 million hectares) and 9% to crop production (0.4 million hectares). As dairy production in Ireland is primarily from grass, there is a very seasonal pattern of calf births in Ireland, with almost 60% of all calves being born in the months of February, March and April. To maintain a very seasonal calving pattern, excellent fertility is of the upmost importance and this has been the emphasis of the Irish breeding goal for over 10 years. Irish farmers strive to maximise grazed grass in the diet of the cattle as this the most natural diet for the cow and it is over 4 times cheaper than the cheapest available commercial food.

Fig 1. NCBC Breeding programme

Breeding goal The Irish breeding goal is defined by the Economic Breeding Index (EBI), which is a single figure profit index to assist producers in selecting the most profitable cows and bulls to use to breed replacements. The breeding objective takes account of the key drivers of outputs and costs on Irish farms. The key drivers of profit on dairy farms are practically the same the world over: production, fertility, calving, cull value, health and maintenance and these drivers are found in the Irish Breeding Goal EBI. The Irish EBI is constantly updated to reflect the better understanding of the likely market for dairy products in the future. The EBI is a Profit index (PTA) and as such is expressed in Euro (€). Each €1 increase in the EBI of a cow has been demonstrated to deliver €1.98 of profit on the farm. (Ramsbottom G et al).

7

“Fertility is our business” The Irish EBI places a large emphasis on fertility and production which is delivering a more productive cow with the ability to go in calf and survive for a number of lactations. The Irish proving system is among the toughest in the world, it is farmer focused and provides an evaluation across all breeds for the dairy herd on the same base. The NCBC breeding programme is delivering a balanced cow which has a low maintenance cost and is capable of producing high quality milk. The measure of fertility in Ireland is Calving Interval (the interval from one calving to the next) and Survival (the percentage of cows that last from one lactation into the next). With Ireland’s seasonal production system it is very important that cows calve every 365 days and last for many lactations. Failure to achieve a 365 day calving interval results in shorter lactations, lower production and eventual culling. It is important to achieve improved fertility without sacrificing production, so production is still weighted strongly and many of the top bulls for EBI are strong production improvers as well as elite fertility improvers. The EBI weights its traits as follows:

7%

6% 4%

Production 38%

10%

Fertility Calving Beef

Maintenance health

Fig. 2 EBI Sub-indexes

The economic breeding value sub-indexes As you can see the EBI is the sum of 6 sub-indexes which are in turn the sum of related traits. Production: Production accounts for 38.1% of the total EBI. It reflects the sire ability to produce daughters that have particular milk production characteristics. As you can see from the trait emphasis protein is the most heavily weighted accounting for 22% of the overall index. There is also a multiplier for fat and a slight negative multiplier on milk volume. This model reflects the desire to produce high quality milk rich in the nutritive components. Fertility: Fertility accounts for 34.8% of the overall index and is made up from two very important traits for farmers wishing to exploit grassed grass. Calving Interval is expressed in days more (+) or less (–) than the base, therefore a bull who scores –5 will on average deliver daughters that calve 5 days earlier than the average cow. Survival is a measure of the ability of a bull progeny to survive from one lactation to the next. Calving: The ability of a cow to go back in calf is highly influenced by characteristics like calving difficulty, gestation length and ability to calve. 8

grassland alliance Catalogue 2012

These traits are calculated in the delivery of an overall index. Direct calving difficulty indicates the likely difficulty in calving a cow pregnant by the sire. Maternal calving difficulty is a measure of the ability of the daughters of a bull to calve. Beef: Male calves and the eventual salvage value of the carcass of a cow are important to include when considering the total economic contribution the daughters of a bull can make. Because the beef contribution is only realized a small number of times in the life of the cow the index contributes to 7.2% of the overall index. Maintenance: To ensure we have the most efficient animals a maintenance sub-index is included which reflects the extra cost or saving of feeding the daughters of a bull just to maintain body weight. Therefore the index will penalise bulls whose daughters cost above the average to maintain. Health: The current index looks at somatic cell count and lameness under the health sub-index. The health traits will grow in importance and number over time. As you can see the Economic Breeding Index (EBI) is designed to deliver cattle that are optimally suited to a seasonal grazing production system. We aim to deliver a cow to suit your system and not ask you to adapt your system to suit our genetics. If your current genetics are not working perhaps, you should talk to us.

Abbreviations on the bull pages DCD %: Direct calving difficulty (%). Bulls with a DCD % of less than 2% are considered suitable for use on maiden heifers. MCD %: Maternal calving difficulty (%) GL Days: Gestation length (Days) CM %: Calf Mortality (%) BAv: Bull Average

All Irish genetic evaluation data was supplied by ICBF August 2012. The confirmation figures of the Irish bulls in this catalogue have been converted to New Zealand base figures using the Interbull Conversion Factor August 2012. This will create a common base for both Irish and New Zealand bulls and it will provide more specific information of the confirmation possibilities of the Irish bulls in grazing systems.

Grassland breeding programme in New Zealand CRV has been active in the grasslands market for 40 years through its operation in New Zealand, CRV Ambreed. Four decades of breeding grassland genetics has resulted in a lot of knowledge, experience and understanding of how to produce the type of animal that can perform under the many challenges of a low cost, seasonal grasslands system. New Zealand has 6 million dairy cattle of which 4.8 million make up the milking herd. The average herd size is 386 cows, with 2.8 cows/ha, an annual average yield of 334 kg milk solids, and an average cow longevity of 4.3 lactations. New Zealand also has a seasonal system with spring calving and is mainly pasture-based, although more feed is bought in than it was a decade ago. 26

grassland alliance Catalogue 2012

New Zealand has various farming systems, ranging from our grass-based systems without bought-in feed to a system where more than 30% of the feed is bought in. Once-a-day (OAD) milking is also becoming increasingly popular. Most important in the New Zealand systems is that profitability for these farms depends on growing and grazing as much grass is possible. In a system heavily based on making profit it should be stressed that supplementary feeds are not substitute feeds for profitable pasture-based systems. The New Zealand cow should meet the following criteria: - Ability to harvest large quantities of grass of varying quality (18 - 20kg DM/ day) - Ability to produce valuable milk efficiently (relative to live weight) - Ability to calve repeatedly within 365 days

Breeding goal The New Zealand breeding goal is defined by the New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI). The breeding goal covers production, management and functional type to produce a robust, long lasting efficient converter of pasture into profit. From this, greater levels of production AND higher levels of fertility and longevity are achieved: The three critical elements of a profitable cow for grasslands-based systems. This breeding goal is in contrast to the current dairy industry index used to measure genetic merit, which is heavily weighted on production with lower emphasis on durability traits. The NZMI weights its traits as follows: Production (protein and milk): Management (overall opinion, fertility, live weight, calving difficulty, residual survival and somatic cell score): Type (capacity, rump angle and udder overall):

40% 41% 19%

NZMI focuses on protein – the highest value milk component. And by selecting for protein, you’ll also get fat for a balanced increase in milk solids and the dairy cheque. Management traits are included to provide for faster milking and more easily managed animals with high fertility – they’ll be favourite of the herd! Type traits of capacity, rump angle and udder overall are added to create cows that have the strength, form and fertility to stand up to the stress of high milk production year after year. In a nutshell, NZMI breeds towards strong and capacious cows that are efficient producers of high value milk, with good shed traits, fertility and the udders to keep them profitably producing in the herd for longer. And those are the cows we all want! Balanced breeding Good udders, improved capacity and robust frames complete the picture that’s called balanced breeding, a unique approach in NZ-grassland breeding. This approach understands that farmers have different requirements to meet the needs of their unique farming and management systems. Goal is to deliver farmers diversity and reliability in genetics, and a balanced, practical approach to commercial breeding that results in efficient grassland type animals. In this line the bulls offer fertility, outcross, longevity, functional type and efficient production.

Breeding values for New Zealand bulls New Zealand breeding values and indexes for bulls are calculated by NZ Animal Evaluation Unit on behalf of NZ Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL ) which publishes the information. In New Zealand, animals are evaluated on an across-breed basis, with the base being the average 2000-born cow. The base animal has breeding values of zero for all traits and indexes of zero. NZAEL also publishes withinbreed average breeding values and indexes for cows born in 2000. In this Grassland Alliance catalogue, CRV expresses within-breed breeding values and indexes for its New Zealand bulls in order to show their relative performance against sires of its own breed. Explanation of international ‘within breed’ graphs As you can see from the table on the next page the 2000 across-breed base cow has BVs of zero for all traits- as would be expected. Jerseys and Friesians deviate away from this across-breed base in a number of key areas. Example: The 2000 base Friesian cow actually produces 498 litres of milk more than this across breed base cow and the 2000 base Jersey produces 702 litres less than the across-breed base cow.
