New state law allows friends, family members to officiate for day

Wedding season is upon us. And for some happy couples, one step to wedded bliss could become a lot easier. A new state law now licenses friends or family to officiate a wedding for the day.

Lori Sloma-Konicki was the first to receive this license in the city of Poughkeepsie, after her niece and goddaughter Allison Clerkin asked her to officiate her wedding this May, she said. Clerkin, while raised

Catholic, is not very religious. Her aunt, who once drove through a blizzard just to attend her baptism, felt like a much better choice to officiate, she said.

“I really wanted to have that personal touch in our ceremony,” she said.

They considered online ordination, but Sloma-Konickki wasn’t entirely comfortable with it, and Clerkin learned some such weddings have been legally contested. This new state law was, as Sloma-Konicki put it, “the perfect solution.”

“It gives a certain amount of freedom, I would think, to the parties of the marriage,” said Danielle Gillespie, city clerk and registrar for the city of Albany. The cities of Albany, Saratoga Springs and Hudson each have instructions and applications online for those wishing to take advantage of the new license. But there are still some limitations, Gillespie said. The one-day officiant license does not, for example, give you a chance to speedrun as many marriages as you could possibly officiate within 24 hours. It’s linked to the marriage certificate for the specific couple and expires after the ceremony. That means, while you can get married anywhere in the state, the marriage and officiant’s licenses must to surreptitiously record a conversation, the provision is in-apposite.”

Montagnino also said that Tetu will not press charges against Kim.

All this has triggered the city’s Republican Committee Chairman Michael Brandi to release a statement about Kim’s use of the “f-word.”“This disturbing pattern has to stop,” Brandi said of the Democratic mayor. “Mayor Kim has shown no ability to control his temper and it is completely inappropriate to direct this kind of vitriol and threats towards an employee in any context. If this was corporate America, Kim would lose his job.” In the end, both be issued in the same clerk’s office. Applicants must also be over 18 and pay a $25 fee.

The legislation was introduced in January 2021, but versions go back as far as 2006, with legislators calling for it as a way to “modernize” and allow for more intimate ceremonies. It was signed into law in late December and took effect March 28, joining states like California, Massachusetts and Vermont.

But not every city was as prepared. Sloma-Konicki said when she first went to the city chamberlain’s office this April in Poughkeepsie, they were not aware of the new law. A week later they had the form available, and she credits them with coming up with it so quickly. City Chamberlain Jasmin Davis said the city created the form as soon as they were made aware of the law.

“I think that munic- ipalities are trying as quickly as possible to put it in place,” said Davis, who expects the option to be popular in a city that processes hundreds of marriages a year.

In the nearby town of Poughkeepsie, town clerk Felicia Salvatore said they have created forms for the license, but there has been a lack of guidance from the state. Troy City Clerk Maria DeBonis said the city was still drafting legislation for the license fee.

About seven years ago, Capital District natives, Lindsay Keyes and Winslow Crane-Murdoch, were very ill victims of Lyme disease and patients of internationally renowned Hudson Valley Lyme disease physician and expert, Dr. Richard Horowitz. When Dr. Horowitz’s nurse practitioner, Jennifer Goldstock (who currently has a private practice in Latham), learned that they were both young filmmakers, she introduced them and they jumped at the chance to work together professionally toshine a spotlight on the dangers of Lyme disease and the largely ignored plight suffered by Lyme patients.

One of Lindsay’s and Winslow’s first stops was to Uncommon Grounds from Saratoga Springs, on our Parade Float and sing with us!

Annual Meeting of East Line Union Cemetery

Former Albany-based Associated Press reporter Christopher Carola tells the stories of the many Saratoga County residents who served in the military during the Second World War. Using local archives, wartime articles from The Saratogian and his own interviews with WWII veterans, Carola talks about the experiences of dozens of men and women who answered their nation’s call to duty. This talk is in-person and is free, though donations are always appreciated.

Sloma-Konicki hopes her officiating her niece’s marriage will make the ceremony much more personal. Clerkin and her fiancé Eric Mimnaugh are writing their own vows, and Sloma-Konicki is writing her script for the ceremony.

“No one else could use the script that they are going to use for their wedding,” she said. “It’s going to be very, very special for me and them.”

Frances Ostrander was a charter and life member of the Old Saratoga Historical Association who worked diligently for nearly fifty years to raise funds and secure furnishings for the Philip Schuyler House and to assist in giving tours of this historic landmark. The Association provides programs and activities that help people understand and appreciate the historical significance of the Schuylerville area.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Capitalland lacrosse will be running a boy’s MAY & JUNE lacrosse programs. Players can chose to play on Tuesdays night, Sunday afternoons or BOTH. Programs will start on May 16 and end on June 25. Each group will play for an hour and a half each day/night. Levels include: a co-ed K – 5th learn to play program; boys instructional programs for beginner & novice players grades 2nd – 5th & 6th- 10th; an advanced instruction program for players in graders 3 – 6 & 7 – 9 who want to refine their game while being introduced to more advanced techniques. All age level will be separated and a scrimmage will be held each night.
