Diabetes mellitus, or most commonly known as diabetes, is a condition in which a person has high blood sugar because their bodies don’t produce enough insulin or their cells don’t respond to the insulin produced. There are three types of diabetes. There’s Type 1 diabetes which results from the body’s failure to produce insulin. The person suffering from this type would require insulin injections. There’s Type 2 diabetes which results from insulin resistance where cells fail to use insulin properly. Then there’s Gestational diabetes where pregnant women suffer from high blood glucose level during pregnancy. The most common symptoms of diabetes include polydipsia or excessive thirst, polyuria or frequent urination, extreme weight loss or weight gain, polyphagia or increased hunger, fatigue, irritability, blurry vision, confusion, and skin rashes known as diabetic dermadromes. If you’re suffering from more than one of these symptoms at a time and if the symptoms persist, it’s important that you see a doctor to get tested. Medical professionals would be able to detect if you have the disease through simple blood tests. Prevention is better than cure so early detection is key. Diabetes is also hereditary so if you have a family history of this disease there’s a greater risk of you acquiring it. Preventive measures could be taken so you won’t fall victim to this deadly disease. Diabetes is a chronic illness that is difficult to cure.
