Vitrectomy - Surgery Elected For Diabetic Retinopathy Patients Let us have a recap about the disease diabetic neuropathy before discussing the details on its surgery,so that we will have a know-how behind the correction of the process of surgery. As we know, diabetes have various complications,as it can affect various organs including our eyes.Diabetic eye disease may include cataract, glaucoma and the last is diabetic retinopathy, which explains the damage of the blood vessels in the retina due to changes in blood vessels like swelling and the leak of fluid.Other times, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.Diabetic retinopathy goes from mild nonproliferative retinopath which is the earliest stage as it progresses to moderate to sever until the advanced stage resumes to proliferative retinopathy. In this, retinopathy can get worse and over time,it can cause loss of vission. Also, proliferative retinopathy can develop without symptoms and so is macular edema. Thus, you can develop these and can still see fine, however, the risk of vision loss is still inevitable. So now, here is a way to protect your eyes from developing such.If you have a diabetes, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam,at least once a year.Whether or not you have the symptoms, early detection and timely treatment can prevent yourself from losing your vision. Appropriate follow-up care is concerned and that better control of blood sugar levels slows the onset and progression of retinopathy. However,if things still get to worse, the last resort are two of the effective treatments of retinopathy. The first one is the surgical removal of the vitreous gel or you may call it vitrectomy, and the second is the laser treatment.Vitrectomy is just an intervention to alleviate the discomfort of ambiguous vision, thus it just improves vision. But this does not guarantee the cure of the disease.

As for vitrectomy, the process is performed in either local or general anesthesia. But the operation of both eyes does not take place at the same day of operation. It takes several weeks part to take another surgery for the other eye.Once the operation starts, the physician makes a tiny incision in the eye and removes the vitreous gel that is clouded with blood by a small instrument. The vitreous gel that was removed will be replaced by a salt solution,in this condition, there will be no slight changes in your vision because the component of vitreous gel is mostly of water. With just a short operation, you can either go home or stay in the hospital. But because your eye is still sensitive,it will be red and you will be required to wear an eye patch for a few days or weeks to protect your eye.You are also advised to take medicated eyedrops to protect your eyes against infection.
