Manager

oliver glasner Welcome back to Selhurst Park, and welcome to Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham Hotspur players and staff for this afternoon’s game.

W

e have to be honest and say we are not getting the results we want at the moment, and it feels as though every game is the same: it is close over the 90 minutes and decided by one or two situations. It happened again against Nottingham Forest on Monday night, where the players tried everything, worked hard, created situations, but in the end we got punished. At the moment we aren’t scoring goals, and then it becomes tough. I think we’ve all had better times in football – everybody is frustrated and disappointed because we are all human, but we have been competitive in every game and the only way to get out of this moment is to keep working hard and keep supporting each other. My responsibility now is to get heads up and support the players. A positive result will see us grow in confidence and I believe the results will soon come. It was incredible to see so many fans had taken time out to travel to Nottingham on a Monday night and it was a positive in an otherwise disappointing

Manager

Since moving to London I have been able to experience first-hand what a welcoming and diverse community we are lucky enough to have here, and so I’m glad the Premier League is marking their commitment to removing racism from the game

evening. We could hear you behind the players from the start to the finish and we are lucky to have supporters who stay behind the team when things are difficult.

We could hear you behind the players from the start to the finish and we are lucky to have supporters who stay behind the team when things are difficult

It is a busy period, with a cup tie against Aston Villa midweek before facing Wolves on Saturday. There are no half-measures in cup football, so we will go for the win as we always do because we want to go as far as possible in every tournament. Today marks No Room for Racism. Since moving to London I have been able to experience first-hand what a welcoming and diverse community we are lucky enough to have here, and so I’m glad the Premier League is marking their commitment to removing racism from the game. At Crystal Palace, we have players from all nationalities and backgrounds in the dressing room, but inside we are all the same.

We face Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, a team who are on a good run of form and will be aiming for Champions League qualification this season, so it is sure to be challenging again. I know, once again, you will be 100% behind the team as we look to put in a performance to make you proud

marc Guéhi The only way for us to get out of this difficult run of results is to keep working hard every day in training, and that is exactly what we’ve done in preparing for this afternoon’s match.

M

onday night was a disappointment for all of us, particularly as another game was decided by fine margins but not in our favour. We felt as though we had chances to score the opening goal, and kept pushing even after falling behind, but ultimately we fell short and the responsibility lies with us. I know how hard everyone is working on the training ground to get that first win of the Premier League season, and we hope that can come this afternoon. It’s a big week for us, with a trip to Villa Park coming up in the League Cup. If we win, we can reach the quarter-finals. Reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley is one of the highlights of my time here at Palace, and we want to be back in the latter stages of cup competitions again. Then, we travel to Molineux to take on Wolves. I know how much your support means to the players – we could hear you during the Nottingham Forest game – so I want to thank you in advance for travelling with us up and down

we have the capacity to beat any side in the league on our day. We have been working hard to try to ensure that today is one of those days. I’m looking forward to walking out at Selhurst Park into what I’m sure will be a great atmosphere

the country. I know it’s not easy, particularly with away games during midweek, but it really does make a big difference. It continues to be an honour to represent England, and so to earn my 20th cap over the international break was a special feeling – I will keep working hard to try to add more in the future. Well done to all the lads who were out representing their countries, and I’m sure more will earn that recognition going forwards.

We will take the knee before kick-off this afternoon as part of the Premier League’s No Room for Racism campaign. When I look around our dressing room, I see players from so many different backgrounds and cultures, and I know we’re a stronger team for it. We have to challenge racist abuse wherever we hear it. Football is everyone’s game.

Today we take on a team chasing Champions League qualification. We know just how good Spurs can be at their very best, but we also know that we have the capacity to beat any side in the league on our day. onday night was a disappointing one for Oliver and the players, and the results continue to elude us, but I know that they will be working harder than ever to ensure that we turn our form around. Your support at the City Ground could be heard loud and clear – thank you once again for continuing to back us up and down the country. We have a chance to take a positive step this week, starting this afternoon against Spurs. We know what a top side they are, but also that we can beat anyone at Selhurst Park on our day, so I hope we can have another memorable afternoon. Then, we travel to Villa Park with the chance of a place in the League Cup quarter-finals up for grabs, before heading to Molineux to take on Wolves next Saturday. Your support will be absolutely vital both home and away, and I look forward to seeing you there. It was great to see Palace Women get another point on the board, drawing with Liverpool having registered a historic first

Selhurst Park can be one of the hardest places in the Premier League to get a result when the atmosphere is right behind the team, so I’m hoping you can get everything behind Oliver and the players from kick-off this afternoon

WSL victory away at Leicester three weeks ago. Congratulations to Laura and her side on their progress. We host Manchester City at Selhurst Park on Sunday, 3rd November (14:00 GMT), so do get down if you are able to get behind the team.

Well done to Marc, Dean, Jefferson, Daichi, Ismaila and Matt for representing their countries over the international break. It is a huge honour and reflects brilliantly on Palace as a club, and we hope to have plenty more players called up by their national sides in the future. After making his debut at Selhurst Park just before the international break, Trevoh Chalobah sits down with Will Robinson to talk reuniting with an old partner, the crucial support of the manager and following in family footsteps…

Trevoh Chalobah

I

t feels strange that someone like Trevoh Chalobah should doubt whether he was ever destined to be a footballer. He has, after all, become a Premier League regular, playing in the Champions League against the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and Real Madrid, against some of the world’s greatest attackers and alongside some of the world’s best defenders. When he looks back, though, he acknowledges the serendipitous circumstances around his beginnings in the professional game. While his older brother Nathaniel was a prodigious talent from an early age, Trevoh’s interest in the game was a slow burner. “I never really loved football when I was younger,” he remembers, speaking just days after making his debut for the club against Liverpool. “When [Nathaniel] was playing, I used to go out with my friends and do normal kids stuff: in the park, riding bikes. “When I saw that my brother had been scouted by Fulham, I thought I might try and I started school football. That’s how it started. My love only started because I saw that my brother got scouted by a professional team in Fulham because he had natural ability. “For me, I didn’t really have the natural ability, so I had to work to get that ability and that love for the game. From there onwards was the point when things changed.” It’s lucky they did, because it soon became clear that the Chalobahs – both of them – were destined for the top. “I was doing school football, and my brother must have told the Chelsea scouts,” the younger Chalobah

remembers. “He didn’t let me know that they were coming to watch my games. I was playing in a Sunday League team in Newbury. “I was going to Fulham, but then Chelsea came in at the last-minute to go, and my brother had already gone there. I was happy he didn’t let me know the scouts were coming or I could have been a bit nervous! I was a striker in those days and I scored a lot of goals in that game.” With the two at Chelsea, Nathaniel – five years older than Trevoh – became a figure to look up to. “Not every young player has a brother who is also playing in the Premier League, so for me it was a blessing and a real help,” he says. “Speaking to him, watching him grow up and helping my game, and him giving me that confidence and motivation to say: ‘If my brother can

I used to train with the first-team at Chelsea so we used to train together before he left. Then two seasons ago he was at Fulham and I started the game for Chelsea, but literally when I was coming off he came on. We didn’t quite get to share the pitch together but it was still a nice moment

We still talk about our games to this day. “I used to train with the first-team at Chelsea so we used to train together before he left. Then two seasons ago he was at Fulham and I started the game for Chelsea, but literally when I was coming off he came on. We didn’t quite get to share the pitch together but it was still a nice moment!” Coming through the academy system at Chelsea, Chalobah was partnered with another young defender with high expectations: Marc Guéhi. “We played in Youth Cups and in the youth Champions League,” he remembers. He’s being a bit too modest; they won the FA Youth Cup twice, beating a Manchester City side containing Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho, and lifted the UEFA Youth League in 2016, beating Ajax and Paris Saint-Germain on the way. “He’s helped me coming in – he’s so nice, relaxed, chilled. He’s very mature for his age: cool, calm, collected. You can see that on the pitch as well.” While Guéhi left Stamford Bridge to gain Premier League minutes and begin to reach his full potential, Chalobah headed out on loan, eventually earning his debut for his boyhood club against Crystal Palace, when he scored a phenomenal first goal. “It was an amazing moment,” he remembers of the game. “Prior to that I was on loan for three seasons, working hard for that one moment and I managed to get there. All the hard work, all the struggles I went through

and having to bounce back after certain games... “It all flashed through my mind in that one particular moment, and the first thing I could do was drop to my knees and basically just say thank you.” Chalobah’s emotional celebration captured the imagination of all those watching Match of the Day that evening. The opportunity was provided to him by newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel, a figure he credits with giving him the platform to begin his career at the very top level. “For me he was a top manager,” Chalobah explains. “He developed my game a lot. “Just because you’re a young player doesn’t mean you can’t perform at the highest level, and he gave me that confidence going into that

Trevoh Chalobah season. I ended up doing well, playing in the Champions League and from there my confidence grew, because of him and the opportunity that he was giving to the younger players. “It’s nice when a manager trusts in you. He was always talking to me in training, managing me as a young player, [explaining] the importance of keeping your head right and keeping focus, taking it step by step.” Tuchel made his name back in Germany, first as manager of Mainz and then with Borussia Dortmund, while Palace boss Oliver Glasner was about to get his big break in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and later Eintracht Frankfurt. Chalobah can see the clear similarities between the two, both moulded by the German system. “There definitely are [similarities] – in terms of his communication with players, talking to players, helping them on the pitch,” he says. “For the first month since I’ve been here he’s been really good. Even at times when I was not playing – I was injured – he was still communicating with me how he wants me to come back into the team. “Talking with him after the Liverpool game we were discussing how I could improve, what I need to work on, because as a player, no matter how old you are, it’s important that you want to learn and take that into the next game. “He’s been a manager and a player too, so it’s good to have a lot of advice on improving your game. It’s both tactical and individual, personal and as a team. It’s important to get a balance of it all.”

18

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have never got on, but Chalobah says his motivation for this afternoon comes from a desire to kick-start the season with a big result in front of the home supporters. “I know a lot of Chelsea fans don’t like Tottenham, but for me I’m here at Palace now and we’re going to try to win every game,” he says. “Against the top teams like Manchester United and Liverpool we have played well. We’ve created chances and it’s just that final edge and the final end product that we need to put it in the bag. “That comes with confidence. We know how much the fans are behind us and we want to use that atmosphere and that presence to get that win. “The results haven’t shown it, but we’re creating chances and I think

once we’ve got the confidence from taking those chances you’ll see a different side, because we’ve got the talent and we’ve got the quality. “It’s important for us to stay cool and keep working. We always want a good start to the Premier League, but it’s about bouncing back, recovering and learning from previous games to take that forward and not feel too harsh on ourselves. We take the positives from the games. We’ll try to fix where we’re leaking goals, and capitalise on the chances that we get. “I’ve come in and felt at home straight away. 21

Chalobah is the newest member of the Crystal Palace squad, but he speaks with an authority and experience which demonstrates the value he is going to add to Oliver Glasner’s side not just on the pitch, but off it too. In reuniting with his old defensive partner Marc Guéhi, the Eagles have two defenders who exude calmness not just in possession of the ball, but in everything they do from kick-off to the final whistle. If they can achieve the same success they spearheaded at academy level while alongside one another at Selhurst Park, it could be a particularly profitable partnership indeed

And finally...

and finally...

with trevoh chalobah

Having played with some of the very best defenders of this generation, Trevoh Chalobah picks out five defensive inspirations that stand out above the rest…

Antonio Rüdiger Playing with him was amazing too. The aggression and the quality that he has – he was a big personality.

Nemanja Vidic It’s how aggressive he was. When I used to watch Manchester United games, he didn’t care what tackle he went in to – he would stick his leg out there. The passion he had and the willingness to not get beat as a defender, that’s what you need.

Thiago Silva For his all-round game – I remember being in school and watching his clips on YouTube when he was at AC Milan and thinking: ‘Wow, what a player’. To play with him at Chelsea was like a dream come true.

Sergio Ramos From watching him in the Classicos and winning lots of trophies, Ramos would have to be another one.

23

David Luiz He’s a different type of centre-back, not your normal defender. He has his own playing style on the ball, defending, and the goals he scored as well. He was great at free-kicks.

The frustration felt by Tottenham fans could be encapsulated by their two final Premier League matches before the international break. A whirlwind display at Old Trafford, where Manchester United were put to the sword in a result that could have been far more incredible than the scoreline suggests, was followed by a capitulation at Brighton which saw them surrender a two-goal halftime lead.

key players Postecoglou has promised silverware in his second season, so who could inspire Spurs to a first trophy since the League Cup back in 2009? Here, we pick out four players who could be key to success this season…

There is something in the water in the Netherlands when it comes to producing central defenders. Van de Ven was part of the Dutch Euro 2024 squad this summer, alongside Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Manchester United’s Matthijs de Ligt and Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij, but warranted his place after an excellent first season in the white of Tottenham Hotspur. His prowess in defence was aided by phenomenal speed, and he was recorded in January as the Premier League’s fastest-ever player, clocking up a speed of 37.4 kilometres per hour in a match against Brentford. His ability to recover in defence is matched by his influence going forwards, racing 60 yards at Old Trafford to set up the opening goal. The size of the fee for Van de Ven upon his arrival from Wolfsburg raised eyebrows, but by May he was named as the club’s Player of the Season, and Postecoglou continues to rely on his defensive organisation as the new campaign heads towards the busy winter period.

Udogie signed for Spurs in 2022, but arrived under the radar after being loaned straight back to Udinese for his first campaign. He finally made his debut for the club in August 2023, and soon became an integral part of Postecoglou’s Tottenham revolution, embodying the attacking endeavour both in and out of possession. After opening his Premier League account in a thumping win over Newcastle United, confidence surged and he began to earn plaudits for his consistent performances. At just 21-years-old, there will be hope he can continue to grow and fulfil his considerable potential while in North London – a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Season Award was a mark of his progress so far. After making his Italy debut in 2023, Udogie has become a regular for the four-time World Cup winners.

SON SILVERWARE? If there is one man who will be have been buoyed by Ange Postecoglou’s declaration that he ‘always’ wins silverware in his second season at a club, it will be Heung-min Son. One of Tottenham’s greatest players of the modern era, a runner-up in both the Champions League and the League Cup, it will be a disappointment if he finishes his career in North London without a trophy to his name. Having joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has proved one of the league’s best-value acquisitions, having made more than 400 appearances for Spurs and sitting fifth in the list of all-time top scorers, behind legends like Martin Chivers, Jimmy Greaves and, of course, Harry Kane. His status in his native South Korea is one of almost unimaginable acclaim, having earned 129 caps and been named Asian Footballer of the Year on nine occasions. With his old partner in crime Kane now scoring freely at Bayern Munich, it remains to be seen whether Son can end Spurs’ trophy drought to cap a phenomenal career at the club.

Last season his potential began to be truly realised, as he netted 19 times in the Premier League, catching the eye for his hard work in attack to complement his natural finishing ability. Spurs and Postecoglou were convinced, and soon sanctioned a £65 million deal.

through time 1882 Formed by schoolboys at the Hotspur Cricket Club in 1882, they were renamed Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in 1884 to avoid confusion with another Hotspur club in north London, who kept mistakenly receiving their mail. Why Hotspur? Because of 12th century knight Sir Henry Percy, of course, who was nicknamed ‘Hotspur’ by the Scots for his tendency to dig his spurs into his horse while charging into battle during the Hundred Years’ War, and whose family owned the Tottenham Marshes where Spurs first played. Because spurs (the item) were associated with fighting cockerels, the club adopted the bird on their logo too, and a version of the huge statue that stands atop their stadium today was first crafted by William James Scott, one of the players.

1901 -

1951 -

Spurs win the FA Cup while still a non-league side, remaining the only side to achieve such success. The first match at Crystal Palace attracted over 100,000 fans, before they won the replay 3-1 in Bolton.

Future Palace manager Arthur Rowe takes over and lays the foundations for Total Football with his ‘push and run’ style, winning a first title in 1951 and signing one of Spurs’ greatest-ever players, Danny Blanchflower.

cb gary mabbutt Captain of the 1991 FA Cup winners side, UEFA Cup winner in 1984, 619 games for the club, and a warrior in the true sense of the word, Mabbutt returned from a fractured skull and eye-socket in 1993 to play five more years for the club.

cm glenn hoddle With so many to choose from, we’ve gone for Hoddle over legends like Dave Mackay and Danny Blanchflower. Hoddle is one of the greatest technical players England have ever produced, and won two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in almost 500 games at Spurs. Kids, watch his best bits on YouTube – you won’t be disappointed.

st jimmy greaves 1984 Spurs lifted the UEFA Cup once again, winning three FA Cups in a decade-long spell where they earned a reputation as entertainers, inspired first by Glenn Hoddle, Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles, and later Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker.

2017 -

Greaves is the greatest goalscorer in the history of the English game, scoring 357 top-flight goals, ahead of older greats like Dixie Dean (310) and modern legends like Alan Shearer (283). He scored 268 goals at Spurs, and netted 44 times in 57 games for England.

st harry kane Kane stayed at Spurs to break Greaves’ scoring record, before heartbreak in the Premier League as well as Champions League and League Cup finals saw him leave for Bayern Munich to pursue silverware. The numbers speak for themselves: threetimes Premier League Golden Boot winner, 280 goals for Spurs, and a record 68 goals – and counting – for England.

Reinvigorated by Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs finish third and then second in the Premier League before reaching a first European Cup final in 2019, losing to Liverpool two months after they moved into their brand new stadium on the site of the old White Hart Lane.

greatestgames 1-0 cup upset When Palace beat Bill Nicholson’s Spurs at Selhurst Park in January 1970, they did more than book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup; they sent a team packed with legends back to North London with their tails between their legs. The fourth-round replay was a tight affair, with Spurs’ starting XI containing the likes of Jimmy Greaves, Martin Chivers and Steve Perryman, forming the core of the squad that would lift the UEFA Cup just 18 months later. Gerry Queen scored the only goal for the Glaziers, with John Jackson keeping a clean sheet at the other end to secure a famous victory.

0-1 WEMBLEY BOUND It’s often the unlikeliest goalscorers that create the most special memories, and that was the case back in 2016 as Martin Kelly fired Palace one step closer to Wembley with the winner at White Hart Lane. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs were locked in a title race with Leicester City and were the overwhelming favourites, fielding a side led by Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, but they had no reply to Kelly's fine strike. The Eagles beat Reading in the quarter-finals to reach Wembley, before seeing off Watford in the semis for a first final since 1990.

3-0 SELHURST LIFT-OFF After a difficult start to the campaign, the Patrick Vieira era at Crystal Palace got off to an almighty start at Selhurst Park in September 2021. A fiery encounter had seen Japhet Tanganga sent off, and Wilfried Zaha had given the Eagles the lead from the penalty spot. Then, Odsonne Edouard produced one of the greatest substitute cameos the Premier League has seen, scoring just 28 seconds after coming on and adding his second – and Palace’s third – in stoppage time. It finished 3-0, the biggest win against Spurs for 17 years and one of the great atmospheres inside Selhurst Park.

@CDEccleshare

Charlie Eccleshare is a writer for The Athletic, who covered Tottenham Hotspur for five years having previously covered football for The Telegraph. What constitutes a successful season for Postecoglou? Top four (or five if that qualifies for the Champions League) and a trophy would do very nicely. Failing that, just one of those would probably make this season be viewed as a success. It’ll be 17 years in 2025 since Spurs last won a trophy, and so that would probably be the priority in the eyes of most fans. Especially as their last Champions League campaign was so underwhelming. Can he fulfil his promise of silverware? He certainly believes so, and has frequently pointed to the fact that he’s always won trophies in his second completed season at club level. The challenge is that domestically winning a trophy has scarcely been harder. To do so you typically have to get past Manchester City, arguably the best team in Europe, and failing that a team of the calibre of Liverpool or Arsenal. Spurs have City at home in the next round of the Carabao Cup and could really do with a decent draw in the FA Cup after having to play City in the fourth round last year. If Spurs can get past City to reach the Carabao quarters, they’ll believe they have a

very decent chance of winning the competition that has represented their last two pieces of silverware. Tottenham are also favourites for the Europa League in what is a slightly weaker than usual field this year. What explains Tottenham's inconsistency? The fact that they are around the fourth or fifth best team in the division. And teams in that bracket tend to be inconsistent – it’s why they are competing for a Champions League spot rather than the title. Why they are in that bracket rather than the one at the very top is largely down to a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal and a tendency still to switch off defensively. They also struggle to stem the tide once the momentum of a match starts to go against them – the recent defeat to Brighton having been 2-0 up is a good example of that. Who is Tottenham's most important player? Micky van de Ven. His ridiculous speed allows Spurs to play with a high line and squeeze opponents knowing that even if they are caught out, Van de Ven’s recovery pace means they may just get away with it, which is a crucial part of the risk-reward calculation that underpins Postecoglou’s approach.

His ridiculous speed allows Spurs to play with a high line and squeeze opponents

Van de Ven is also capable of making valuable attacking contributions, having already set up two goals this season with charges into opposition territory from his own half, while last season he registered a couple of spectacular goals. He’s the player Spurs really can’t replace when he’s unavailable. Whose contribution flies under the radar? Maybe not so much anymore as his output has become impossible to ignore, but Dejan Kulusevski has been putting in tireless performances for almost three years now and is often taken for granted. Excelling in a new No. 8 role this season, Kulusevski is making headlines with his goals and assists, but even when he’s not doing that the Swede sets the tone for this Spurs side with his phenomenal running power and willingness to press opposition defenders. Known at the club as a “players’ player,” who is always appreciated by his teammates, Kulusevski is starting to get the wider praise his efforts deserve. Give us a name for the future to keep an eye on… Mikey Moore. Special, special talent who has already made five first-team appearances this season, including three in the Premier League. He almost scored at Old Trafford in the 3-0 win against Manchester United last month, and four days later shone as Spurs beat Ferencváros in the Europa League. A forward with plenty of confidence and creativity, Moore only turned 17 in August but is already being tipped for big things

fine margins Lads, it's Tottenham. Surely both the most famous and infamous team talk of all time, courtesy of one of the greats, Sir Alex Ferguson. A disturbing irony then, that on the day we play the Lilywhites, the rest of the Premier League may well be scanning the fixtures list with an overblown sense of self-satisfaction for a chance to say to themselves: “Lads, it’s Palace”. What a strange situation we find ourselves in post-Nottingham Forest. On paper it looks like it’s been a disastrous start – the numbers never lie. And yet they sort of do. We’ve played the big boys in Liverpool and Chelsea, we’ve played teams on a similar level and we’ve played a good few in between and yet throughout this disappointing run, I genuinely think West Ham was the only game I never felt we were going to get anything from. All the others could so easily have been draws or even wins. Even on Monday at the City Ground we had the second-most shots we’d had without scoring in our Premier League history! The Sels save from Ebs, Eddie’s thunderbolt that clipped the angle...

So many gilt-edged chances have gone begging, so many close calls. An inch this way, an inch that way. We’re talking wafer thin margins here, the difference between zero and three points so often being slimmer than cheap ham. Of course, none of this

Johnson to jump in a time machine and save us, we just cannot panic yet. This really doesn’t need to be some root and branch tear-up of our foundations due to an eight-game streak of horror shows where we’ve had our shiny red and blue backsides handed to us on every occasion. That simply is not what’s happened. The sale of Olise, Ayew and Andersen has been constantly documented in the mainstream media as the main culprit for leaving a gaping hole that we have not filled, but it also ignores the fact that amazing talent in Wharton, Doucouré and França have just not been physically available to help fill that hole. People are quick to judge and condemn but the simple truth is that we haven’t seen a full-strength Palace yet this season. And when you take that fact on board, it’s actually kind of impressive that Glasner has had us competing so closely in every game. Being a lifelong heathen, the closest thing I have to a religion is football. I worship in the hallowed grounds of Selhurst Park and like the late great Maxi jazz famously sang, This is my Church. And it’s in this church that I believe the faith must be kept. It’s an historic era for Crystal Palace Football Club. We’ve proved that we belong at the top table, we’ve solidified our status and can undoubtedly beat any one of the other 19 on our day. The easiest, weakest thing to do now is to fall back into that old mentality that we’re somehow mere pretenders, fortunate to be on a little jolly up from the Championship for a few memorable

days out before sinking back down. That’s an old, stale narrative. Right now it’s about weathering the storm. Olise or no Olise, no single player is bigger than the collective and Oliver’s phenomenal run at the end of last season was no fluke. With important players returning, a touch of the old siege mentality and – above all – togetherness, we can turn this around. And why not today? I mean, come on lads! It’s Tottenham*. *An exceptionally talented team with a brilliant manager who are going to make any sort of result for us nothing short of a Herculean task today, but that’s just not as catchy a phrase. James M©arthur

james m©arthur Palace legend James McArthur made 253 appearances for the club, playing over 19,000 minutes in all competitions across nine years. Below, he gives his thoughts on staying calm, Asher Agbinone’s debut, and the role Palace fans can play this afternoon…

Keeping calm It's down to very, very fine margins at the moment – and that's the way football is. When you are losing games, a lot of times those fine margins do go against you – occasions where you don't take your chances, and then you get punished. I think that the lads just need to try and keep positive. They need to see what they're doing right, because it's not like you’re getting battered in games. If you are getting beaten every weekend 3-0 or 4-0, there's nothing to try and get any confidence from and there can be a lot of negativity. I know when you don't win games, it's hard to spread positivity around the place, but I think the lads need to try and look at what they're doing well and brush up on the things that are letting them down a bit too. If you do that, it turns for you when you get that victory. Things start looking up and you start looking forward to the next game straight away. I was fortunate enough to play with many leaders who tried to control the narrative of, when we

went a goal down, not changing what we were doing. We didn’t start doing our own thing. I think that's very, very important. When you're on the pitch and things aren't going well, it's about trying to keep everyone calm and believing that they can get back into games, because there's definitely enough talent in the Palace squad to go and win a lot of matches. I'm still very confident that the lads will turn it around, but as time goes on in football, pressure builds, and you need to learn how to deal with it.

Asher’s arrival Asher Agbinone’s debut was a great moment. To make your debut at 19-years-old… you obviously want to make a winning start on your debut, but to become a Premier League player is fantastic not only for him and his family, but also the club. It shows you that the youth system at Crystal Palace is working. I think that's one thing that the club will want to keep doing: giving people chances. It's important for

the club to try and attract young players and show that we do give young players the opportunity to show they’re good enough to go and thrive in the Premier League. The rest of the lads will have been pleased for him. Before the game, the experienced lads would have been telling him to enjoy the moment, and to do what he’s good at. He obviously got into the squad and onto the pitch because he's doing the right things on the training field. He's obviously a fantastic player to play first-team football at such a young age. I think they'll be telling him to not do anything different now, and to do what's got him here.

Tackling Tottenham Tottenham are a good side, aren't they? No matter if they're on a good run or a bad run, their players are of real quality. They play a lot of possessionbased football which means, I think probably this week more than any other week, the fans are going to need to be patient, because they may have a lot of the ball. We speak about players needing to step up, managers needing to make the right decisions, but for me this week, more importantly than probably ever, and they might not realise how important they are, but the fans are vitally important this week. Being on difficult runs as I have in a Crystal Palace team, if the fans get behind the team and

they make it tough for Tottenham, creating that atmosphere which everyone knows the Palace fans have got, I really feel that could be the big difference of getting that result or not. If you go 1-0 down, stay with the lads. If you go 1-0 up, get louder again. This week, I think the fans have got a massive job to do for the players, and the players will feed off the atmosphere that the crowd create.

Edouard’s delight The last time I faced Tottenham was in September 2021 – a 3-0 win when Odsonne Edouard scored twice. I don't think Tottenham were on it that day, but we were very good. We knew that they were going to have a lot of the ball, so we had to make sure that we plugged those gaps and did the right things, and when we got that ball, we tried to hurt them. I think it could be the same again this weekend. The lads are going to need to have a solid base and a foundation, which they have got. Then, when you get the opportunities, you need to take them. I know that we’ve been quite unlucky with hitting the woodwork – I think Ebs has hit the crossbar about 10 times this year! – but players like him need to just keep doing the right things. When Ebs gets that goal, I’m sure they’ll flood in. He is obviously a fantastic talent and a massive player for the club – he can be the real difference-maker today

.

palace academy Crystal Palace’s Under-9s to Under-12s have been taking part in a competition to design and create a captain’s armband that celebrates diversity and represents the club, as part of the No Room for Racism campaign weekend.

t

he competition ran as part of the Premier League’s Enrichment Programme: multiple initiatives throughout the season encouraging wider holistic development of players involved in Academy football, beyond what happens on the pitch or in a classroom. The competition itself was held earlier in the month, where all of our Foundation Phase players had the chance to design a captain’s armband which they thought best represented the club and celebrated diversity as part of the No Room for Racism campaign. Players were encouraged to think and be creative with their ideas and concepts, allowing for each of them to create something with words, images

or a design that best put across the messages of the campaign in tackling racism and discrimination. Many designs were put forward by every player from the Foundation Phase and the winner, chosen by Chairman Steve Parish, was designed by Under-9s player Kingly. His design features the flags of every country alongside one another, as well as the words ‘NO ROOM FOR RACISM’ emboldened in blue letters next to two Palace badges and the Premier League logo. “I was thinking about all the countries coming together, to make one team and collectively stop racism,” Kingly explained. “I think it’s very important to stop racism, because if we

52

don’t it will continue to be a very big issue and cause problems for people mentally and emotionally.” Kingly’s design highlighted some of the main points of the No Room for Racism weekend: to prevent discrimination on and off the pitch, and to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across all areas of football. He went on to reveal how proud he was to win the competition. “It was really hard to design this against my teammates and the other age groups, but I really pushed through and I’m so glad to have won. I was so excited when I won and I just wanted to make some more! “It’s so important that everyone is involved in the campaign within the Academy and across the club. Racism is a major thing we need to stop.” Not only has he seen his idea turned into reality, but the armband he designed was worn by Under-21s captain Justin Devenny at Selhurst Park in their game against Sporting Clube de Portugal last week. His design has since been made into 10 armbands, which are going to be worn across the age groups at the Academy in all their games during the No Room for Racism weekend. The

players will also take the knee before kick-off in their games this weekend to show commitment to fighting racism and all forms of discrimination. Head of Academy Player Care, and former Palace player, Alex Wynter organised the competition. “This is a great initiative for the boys to be participating in, to help grow their awareness and the understanding of the issues racism causes,” he explained. “By creating their armband designs, the boys had the opportunity to celebrate diversity and showcase what it meant to them. To have the Chairman involved in selecting a winner was great for us, as well as having the armband being worn by Justin Devenny at Selhurst Park in front of thousands of fans. “The club itself is so diverse, from the men’s first-team, women’s first-team, all the way down to the Under-9s and pre-Academy, even within the staff and the Foundation, it was so good to have Kingly’s design represent the club as a whole.” Indeed, Kingly’s design did encapsulate the club’s belief and message of championing a collective commitment to improving diversity and fighting discrimination in all forms. This will be a long-lasting memory in the mind of Kingly, as well as all of the Foundation Phase players who participated, seeing that their work can be brought into life and potentially have an impact in delivering a message on an issue they are passionate about

palace women Crystal Palace are making waves in their debut Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) season, steadily proving they can compete at the highest level.

t

ransitioning from the Championship to the top-flight is notoriously tough, but the Eagles have been defying expectations, already showing their resilience. An historic first win came on 6th October, a 2-0 victory away at Leicester City, with Annabel Blanchard scoring both goals.

Blanchard credited the team’s unity. “It’s good when you’ve got a great group around you,” she said. “The staff are always supportive. One result doesn’t define us − it’s a long season with plenty of games to go.” Palace’s adaptability and flexibility was on full display in their hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool. Summer signing Katie Stengel scored her first goal for the club against her former side. “We show up each weekend and perform, and we can come away with results,” she said. “We showed we can compete. Instead of being the newly promoted team, we are just another WSL team.” It’s a sentiment echoed by head coach Laura Kaminski, whose core message of resilience and growth is guiding the team through the steep learning curve of WSL competition: “I’ve spoken to the players about not being too high with the highs and not too low with the lows,” she explained. “This is a transition year for us, and the tempo and physical demands in the WSL are higher. But the players have responded brilliantly, and I’m already seeing their growth as a unit.”

ack in 2020, Palace fans took on our first ‘Bike To’ challenge – a 120-mile ride from Selhurst Park to the Vitality Stadium to watch Palace play Bournemouth away. Despite the game being postponed due to COVID, all 28 riders pressed on and completed the journey anyway – raising thousands in the process. Four years later, with the pandemic behind us, we’re taking on the challenge again − with a twist. This time, over Easter Weekend on 18th − 19th April, Palace fans will catch a coach to Bournemouth and cycle back to Selhurst Park to see Palace at home, with a hotel stop on the way. Since our first ride to Bournemouth in 2020, Palace fans have cycled to Southampton, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, seeing two Palace victories and raising over £130,000, all going towards our life-changing work in South London, focusing on three key

Why ‘Bike From’ and not ‘Bike To’? Due to the way the fixtures have landed this year, the number of miles that are feasible to take on and daylight hours at particular times of year, we decided to mix it up with a ‘Bike From’ challenge. Riders will set off by coach from Selhurst Park bright and early to the Vitality Stadium, and will make their way back to South London that same day – with an overnight stay on the way back to rest – and will return to Selhurst Park with time to freshen up before the 15:00 kick off.

100 YEARS OF Selhurst Park

As Selhurst Park celebrates its 100 th year during the 2024/25 campaign, club historian Ian King is looking back at a century of history from 1924 to the current day…

j

ust two people served the club as groundsmen across nearly 60 years of Selhurst Park history: Charlie Catlett and Len Chatterton. In the not-solong-gone days before undersoil heating and the never-changing snooker table baize perfection of the current pitches, it could be a thankless task in the winter months to provide a playable surface. If any younger readers doubt this, just check out some of the older games on YouTube. In 1927, Charlie Catlett was picked out from 53 applicants to become the club’s groundsman. Even in their most optimistic expectations, the club surely couldn’t have imagined that he would spend the next 39 years tending to the grounds. Before the introduction of mechanisation, Catlett had the help of a horse in order to pull the roller and other equipment, with a stable located next to the entrance on to the pitch at the Whitehorse Lane end of the Main Stand. The trusty steed, named ‘Kate’, passed her 20th birthday while at the club. On one occasion she was known to have bolted across the grass at full speed with Catlett still on board – it surely remains the fastest run down the

Weather was such a constant concern that the club would do anything they could to keep the pitch intact. In February 1947, after overnight snowfall that was typical of a dreadful winter, he called in a party of German prisoners of war to

60

help to clear the field, allowing the game to go ahead. Such was his service to the club that in May 1959 Catlett was the first member of the non-playing staff to receive a testimonial, with Queens Park Rangers serving as the opposition. He retired seven years later.

Meanwhile, Len Chatterton had joined the club in 1941 as a young amateur footballer, making some wartime appearances before dropping down into non-league football. By 1958, he was back at Selhurst Park assisting with the schoolboys and reserves along with the ground maintenance, and in 1966 he accepted the responsibility of replacing Charlie Catlett, and set about showing the same dedication and longevity, looking after the pitch for the next 20 years. The abiding memory of Chatterton’s reign as groundsman is the ‘Flatterer’, first a Fiat and then a Volkswagen car modified so that both axles bore rollers rather than wheels. The vehicle would be driven on to the pitch at half-time

to flatten any divots in the penalty areas; on one occasion it had to be unceremoniously pushed back off after it broke down. After a heart attack forced him to give up his position, Chatterton continued to serve the club in the family lounges, organising matchday tours and continuing his charity work as ‘Leo the Clown’. In 1985, he was awarded the Football League Loyalty Award, and – just like Catlett – a testimonial game

ian king’s Selhurst Squad

More than 900 players have graced the turf at Selhurst Park across a century of special memories, but who makes Ian King’s squad of the finest in each position?

j

ust over 2,000 spectators were present to witness Kenny Sansom make his debut against Tranmere Rovers in May 1975, but each and every one was there to see the beginning of a great footballing career. Sansom was still just a schoolboy when he stepped out for the first time aged just 16, and would sign professional forms that December before captaining the side which lifted the FA Youth Cup in 1977, alongside Vince Hilaire and future England international Terry Fenwick. A tough, pacey defender who was strong in the tackle, Sansom possessed a low centre of gravity and a wicked delivery from the wide areas, and soon became a permanent fixture during the promotion from Division Three in 1977, and the Division Two title two years later – as the club earned its best-ever defensive record. On more than one occasion, Sansom would win the ball back deep in the Palace half, kick-starting a flowing move forwards and setting up a decisive goal. The most notable examples were away at Millwall, and at Selhurst Park against Ipswich in September 1979, to help the Eagles to the top of the First Division table.

kenny

lb

Sansom was absent for just one game in three full seasons – and only because he had missed the train taking the team down to Bristol! He was the only player to be ever-present throughout both promotion seasons, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in 1977 and 1979. By now, he was gaining recognition from the national team setup, gaining his first full cap in 1979 against Wales at Wembley. With Palace in the top-flight, his

62

ability was clear for all to see and it became evident he was the standout full-back in England. As the season was about to get underway in 1980, Sansom surprised everyone by moving to Arsenal for £1 million, with forward Clive Allen heading the other way. His career continued to blossom, making almost 400 appearances for Arsenal and earning 86 England caps, a record for a full-back until overtaken by another former Palace defender in Ashley Cole.

NOAKES honourable ALF -

Mentions STAN CHARLTON -

Charlton reunited with former manager Fred Maven at Crystal Palace in 1928, arriving from Exeter City and forming a lethal partnership with Tom Crilly on the opposite flank. The pair featured together for four seasons as Palace narrowly missed out on promotion. Charlton was made captain in just his second appearance for the club, and was renowned as a fearsome penalty taker, ousting Peter Simpson.

A tough little player who served the club from the dismal days of the mid-1950s to promotion out of Division Four in 1961, Noakes was crucial in the club’s first promotion in four decades. After beginning his Palace career further forwards, he settled at left-back and was virtually ever-present, including from the spot: in the 1959/60 season he scored four penalties, missed another three, and scored goals from open play at both the right and the wrong ends…

PETER WALL -

FRED DAWES Dawes (above) teamed up with older brother Albert at Selhurst Park in 1936, serving as a player and later a jointmanager of the club across a 15-year spell. He made 237 appearances, more than a century on either side of the Second World War. A bad head injury in 1949 ended his playing career, but he stayed on until November 1950, when he and co-manager Charlie Slade were dismissed.

Wall (above) was a stylish and skilful defender who was adept at reading the game, joining from Liverpool in 1970 to bolster efforts to remain in the First Division. A broken leg in 1972 kept him out for a long period, but his return under Malcolm Allison saw him deployed as a sweeper in the side which reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1976. With Sansom’s emergence among other talented youngsters, he moved to the United States in 1978. Next issue, Ian King picks his second left-back for his ultimate Selhurst 100 squad…

stories of Selhurst Park

Selhurst Park isn’t just a Premier League football ground, but the heart of a vibrant and diverse community, whose stories stretch back a century. Here, we take a look at how our Palace role models set an example for the next generation...

t

oday’s match celebrates the Premier League’s No Room for Racism campaign, which falls within Black History Month, which has been celebrated every October in the UK since 1987. It means an opportunity to pay homage to the contribution of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people working in the game, and to celebrate the strength and heritage of diversity on and off the pitch across the Premier League.

As such, three Crystal Palace stars and a club legend took the time to visit a local primary school to talk about their inspirations and take questions from students. Chris Richards, Maxence Lacroix and Ashleigh Weerden were joined on stage by Mark Bright to talk to the children at St Christopher’s The Hall in Beckenham, with each drawing on their experience in the game to discuss important lessons for the children.

“It’s good to bring awareness to Black History Month,” Richards told Bright after speaking to the children. “Sometimes it’s something that gets swept under the rug because it’s not an official holiday, but it’s good to be able to show and bring that awareness to younger kids.

Hopefully something can inspire them from what we said today.” You can watch a video

of the event on the Official Crystal Palace App. Everybody has a role to play to ensure that football is inclusive for all – together we can make it clear there is no room for racism or any form of discrimination. Football is a diverse sport, which brings together communities and cultures. This diversity makes the game stronger, and we are working to ensure this is reflected across all areas of the game. stories of Selhurst Park

From starting out as a Twitter page in 2014 to becoming a thriving community of over 300 active members a decade later, Proud and Palace – the club’s official LGBTQIA+ supporters group – celebrated its 10th anniversary this week with a drinks reception at Selhurst Park, where they were joined by some very special guests…

t

he group has grown rapidly since its formation by Stephanie Fuller in 2014, inviting both LGBTQIA+ supporters and allies to share their passion for the Eagles in a safe, welcoming space. Joining Proud and Palace in their anniversary celebrations were Palace Men’s and Women’s managers Oliver Glasner and Laura Kaminski, as well as Men’s goalkeeper Matt Turner and former Women’s team player and now Player Liaison Officer, Leigh Nicol, with all four toasting a special achievement.

In the end, it was about finding community and maybe giving it a different voice, We needed to introduce this group to make points for us stephanie fuller

66

Proud and Palace have created an inclusive, supportive network for LGBTQIA+, and all, supporters. Guests heard from Fuller, who explained how, a decade on from the group’s initial launch event at Selhurst, Proud and Palace – and their allies in the Palace community – are needed now more than ever. “In the end, it was about finding community and maybe giving it a different voice,” Fuller explained. “We needed to introduce this group to make points for us. “As a group, we’ve seen lots of things happen in the world that

really have reaffirmed that this is a community within a community. It’s been a space where people can just talk about that in the context of our group, and what those things mean to them. “Our space is for those sorts of conversations as well – to look after each other and support each other, so that we can come to the football and still enjoy it. It’s a brilliant space, and I love it.” Working closely with the club and the Palace for Life Foundation, the group have shown their pride with rainbow flags at Selhurst Park, across South London and on tour; marched at London Pride and Croydon PrideFest; produced a regular podcast; and even taken part in regular quizzes and football tournaments against other LGBTQIA+ fan groups, winning a ‘Football v Homophobia’ competition in South London just last year. Joining Proud and Palace for a group photo, Glasner, Kaminski, Turner and Nicol praised the role the group has played in promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusion and visibility around the club. Kaminski said: “It’s been a really good environment tonight, with so many fans representing Proud and

Palace. It’s a really important piece of the club and it’s positive to hear so many stories. “They’ve been together for a long time and been on a big journey as a group, so it was good for me and the other staff here to learn, to listen and to get an opportunity to listen to their experiences. Football is for all of us – and we should celebrate that every day.” Glasner said: “It’s always great celebrating an anniversary, and especially that of Proud and Palace. It’s so important, especially in the times we live in, to have supporters from all parts of our community with us. I’m really pleased to be here.” Turner said: “To be here to meet the people from Proud and Palace and hear about their mission over the last 10 years has been really great. “It’s so important that everyone can be themselves, because you don’t want to have to live your life in secret. You want to be able to live it how you want to live it, how you feel you should live it. It’s been a pleasure to be here tonight.” Proud and Palace co-chair Emma Franklin-Wright added: “Community is vital to every member of the LGTBQIA+ community. There are a lot of political

67

wars over our identities and social media is becoming increasingly toxic. “To have a little bit of community, and a corner of WhatsApp where you can just speak to people and say: ‘I’ve got something to get off my chest’, whether that’s to do with harassment, to do with legislation, or to do with Palace’s starting XI…. we’re equally open to all those discussions! That innate sense of community is really vital. “I find it really strange to think that there was a time when I didn’t know these people, because right now they’re my family. “It was incredible that Oliver Glasner and Laura Kaminski both came along tonight. To have both firstteam managers here acknowledging and celebrating our group is really quite special.” Crystal Palace are proud to support Proud and Palace in their fight towards LGBTQIA+ inclusion in football. There is still more to be done as we continue to work together to support inclusivity in all areas of the game. Football is for everyone, and all should feel welcome. We will not tolerate racial or homophobic chants or discriminating comments towards a particular individual or group of individuals at Selhurst Park. You can report discrimination on a matchday by using the Anti-Social Behaviour Text Alert Service: the number is 07507 477 669
