A CHANCE FOR EURO GLORY Today marks the final firstteam home game before the Under-21s take to the field to face PSV Eindhoven in the final of the Premier League International Cup (Wednesday 15th May; 19:00 BST) – a rematch of last year’s final and a chance to lift a European title at Selhurst Park. The Young Eagles lost out in extra-time last year and are out for revenge, having got past Benfica, Feyenoord, Athletic Club and Monaco to make it
this far. With Palace Women having enjoyed silverware in SE25, it’s an opportunity for another memorable evening at Selhurst Park. Make sure you get down to support the boys and create what could be a phenomenal
atmosphere under the lights – just head to cpfc.co.uk to get your tickets. Tickets are available for as little as £1, and with over 4,000 fans in attendance for last season’s final, a big crowd could be in attendance to roar the boys on.
On this day 6 may 2001 Palace earned survival against Stockport County in the most dramatic fashion, as Dougie Freedman scored a late winner to lift the Eagles out of the drop-zone with just three minutes to go. An anxious wait confirmed that Birmingham had held on against Huddersfield, and the celebrations could begin.

inally I can say an official congratulations to our women’s side, who lifted the Championship title and have been promoted to the Women’s Super League. It has been an excellent performance over the year. In every league it is so tough to become champions, so we are all really pleased. My only advice to them was that they should have a good promotion party! This is also our final home game before the Under-21s participate in a European final, so I want to congratulate them on getting so far and wish them all the best. The game is taking place at Selhurst Park, so I hope that many Crystal Palace supporters will be there. There was another record attendance at the Women’s game last Sunday, and it shows that the Crystal Palace family supports every part of the club, and what a tight connection there is between supporters and the whole club, not just with the men’s first-team. I hope that will continue in supporting the Under21s in their final.

We had a fantastic performance against Newcastle in our last home game. There was such energy – in Germany we speak about the fire and the spark from the pitch to the fans, and from the fans back to the pitch. From the beginning of the game we could see from the players the enthusiasm, the spirit, the power and the energy. Sometimes we have to be patient: we had the same power at the beginning, but against West Ham we had the efficiency to score four goals. Against Newcastle we didn’t have it, but you can’t always expect to be 4-0 up after 30 minutes. Then, it’s important to stay positive, and that is what the team did, waiting for the chance which we knew we would get and using it to decide the game. Against Fulham it was the opposite. We were the better team in the first-half, but we didn’t take the lead and suddenly we were a goal down. But we stayed positive and we got back into the game. This is what we have shown in every game: that we always stay together as a team, and we stay together with our fans as a unit. This increases our chances to take a point or to win the game. So I must give a big thank-you to the fans that are always here, whether it’s Saturday at 12:30 or Wednesday at 8pm, or Monday night like this evening. There is support at Selhurst Park, but also away like at Craven Cottage, because we could see and hear you pushing us on even before the

Tonight we take on Manchester United, a big club with a big history and a team with very good players, a good manager and coaching staff. But we feel ready to beat them under the lights. e started the game against Fulham so well, and felt at half-time that we deserved to be ahead based on the chances we had created. We knew that we had to be patient, and after Fulham took the lead the mentality stayed the same: we knew that if we continued to play our game and remained calm in possession, our chances would come. The lads fought right until the end, and an incredible goal from Jeff earned us the point we deserved. Thank you all for your support, which we could hear even before kick-off and which never stopped pushing us on, even after we found ourselves a goal behind. Our last home game against Newcastle was one of our better performances this season, and after dominating the first-half we pushed on in the second-half and got the three points that our performance merited. It was great to see JP score another couple of goals, but the whole team can take credit from that display. We came out with such energy and that was reflected in the stands, which created a brilliant atmosphere at Selhurst Park.

Congratulations to our women’s team who will be playing in the Women’s Super League next season, and who have been in great form all season. It was excellent to see so many people at Selhurst Park last Sunday as we set another record for attendance – we benefit from the atmosphere you create every week, and I know Laura and her players will feel the exact same lift when you get behind them. We look forward to seeing more of the same next season! Tonight we face Manchester United, who are one of the most dangerous sides in the league on their day, but we come into this one full of belief that we can make it three home wins in a row. Some of my best memories in a Palace shirt have come against United – both home and away – and I hope we can create another this evening. To do that, we will need you right behind us. Let’s take that amazing atmosphere against Newcastle and turn it up even louder tonight, and I know the players will respond out on the pitch. God Bless. JW

Welcome to the supporters, players, staff and directors of Manchester United to Selhurst Park for this evening’s match. Welcome as always to each and every Crystal Palace supporter here to get behind the team.
I
must start by offering my congratulations to our women’s side for concluding a phenomenal season by lifting the Championship title and earning promotion. This one could prove to be absolutely pivotal in the history of the club, as we prepare for our first season in the elite of women’s football: the Women’s Super League. We have put a lot of work into building this side, and a lot of credit must go to Grace Williams and Laura Kaminski, as well as to all the players and staff who have been working hard all season. From the first match to the last, the team has been a joy to watch, and you, the supporters have been with them every step of the way come rain or shine. Let’s enjoy the celebrations, and begin to get excited for the big matches that await us next season. Our last home Premier League match against Newcastle was a fantastic evening, as the team put in another hugely impressive performance to beat a side that competed in the Champions League this season.

The atmosphere at full-time was electric, and I know you will carry that same momentum into tonight’s game as we look to make it three home wins in a row. At Craven Cottage, we started brightly once again and were unfortunate to fall behind, but credit to the players for fighting until the end and rescuing a deserved point late on with a fantastic goal from Jeff. At the game, we were really close to the Palace fans and you get an even better feel for the non-stop support. The true test is when a team is behind, and from the moment Fulham scored to the end, the fans carried on encouraging, singing and also making everyone laugh on more than one occasion with some witty chants. We really do have the best fans and I’m thrilled that Oliver and the team are producing football that you all seem to be enjoying so much. As we prepare for another big clash at Selhurst Park this evening, I must remind everybody that the Under-21s are preparing for one of their own: a European final, no less, in the Premier League International Cup. We were so pleased to record another record-breaking attendance for the final match of the Women’s Championship season, and we love to see that same support and vibrant atmosphere as the next generation look to lift silverware. The match takes place on Wednesday 15th May (19:00), and you can get your tickets for as little as £1 at cpfc.co.uk.

Thriving under a new manager and playing a new system, Joachim Andersen talks facing international teammates, his pedigree as a centre-forward and the Oliver Glasner effect. Words: Will Robinson

W
hen Crystal Palace headed to Old Trafford in late September, the match went very much as predicted. The rain lashed down, the game was competitive and the three points were won by a sweep of the boot from a Danish superstar with an eye for goal. Except… there was one key difference. While Rasmus Højlund had scored his first Manchester United goal in the Allianz Arena just 10 days earlier, it wasn’t the then20-year-old centre-forward who proved the matchwinner. It was his national teammate, his compatriot who had already spent three years taking the Premier League by storm. Joachim Andersen struck it sweetly, and three points headed back to south London. It wasn’t just any goal, either. The strike won September’s Goal of the Month and is a nominee for the club’s Goal of the Season – not bad for a centre-back. “Today is not about me or about any other individual, it’s about the team,” said Andersen after the game. But come on, Joa, let’s talk about it for just a little bit longer. “That goal, for me personally, is something I’ll remember,” he said. “It’s something I need to improve on: I need to score more goals because I’m capable of scoring goals. I have the desire to score. I think I have a pretty good strike actually! “I just sensed where the ball would fall, like a good striker would do, and I hit it really well.

Amazing goal.” We’re glad that modesty eventually wore off. He’s not just speculating about what a striker might do. He knows from first-hand experience. “I’m an old striker back in the day,” he says. “I have good feet and I can finish, so I know I have that in my locker. It’s just about not thinking too much in the situation and trying to hit the ball cleanly.” Andersen only stopped playing up-front as a 16-yearold. Even in training, the instinct occasionally kicks back in – Joa the defender becomes Joa the finishing coach. “Sometimes when we have small-sided games, I move a little bit up front and hopefully score some goals. “Sometimes I’ll joke with JP [Mateta] a little bit – but I think

they know what they have to do! They don’t need me to tell them what to do, so I let that go.” With Mateta scoring eight goals since late February, perhaps Andersen’s tips are paying off. Mateta isn’t the only player to have enjoyed his football since Oliver Glasner’s arrival just over two months ago. Palace are now four unbeaten in the Premier League, including victories against European challengers Liverpool (at Anfield), West Ham United and Newcastle United. “He’s on top of everything,” says Andersen of the new boss. “The [recovery] of injured players, how much they do. Our food, our training, all the data. He’s really into everything to get maximum precision. I think that’s really cool. “He sees everything, and you can’t hide from him. He has clear ideas, and he has a clear structure about how he wants to do things. We will get better and better – of course it takes time to learn new things. Our system has changed to 3-4-3, and it takes some practice. “We’re trying to improve and we’ve been speaking about it. We’ve seen a really positive direction. We play better with the ball now and we are creating good chances. But I think we’re on the right track. We need to finish this season well, and then next season will be really cool.” But what does ‘really cool’ entail? For Andersen, it’s all about improvement – both in terms of performances and points. “It’s not because we have a goal to be

number 12 or number 14,” he says. “Talking on everyone’s behalf, we want to play something fun. We want to be in higher positions. “We want to be able to be satisfied with the season, and we haven’t been satisfied with this season. It’s something we hope to be able to do as well. “I’ve had matches where I could have done better, but overall I’ve had a good season. I’m trying to take responsibility as much as I can. I’m trying to contribute as much as I can. My leadership and my performance have been satisfying. When the team [needs it], you have to step up.” It helps that there are other leaders within the dressing room. Andersen, normally starting on the right-hand side of the centre-back pairing in his three years at Crystal Palace, has become used to seeing
18
Joel Ward just outside him, with the club captain still performing in red and blue. “Joel is a really good friend of mine and he is beloved within the team,” Andersen says. “He’s a top guy and everyone really likes him here. He’s our captain! To make 300 appearances for a club in the Premier League, that’s a huge achievement. “I’m just happy for him because he deserves it. He’s a top professional and most importantly a really good guy. I’m happy to know him. He’s a really good leader.” That professionalism has led to some remarkable results with the pair in the side. Andersen picks out two as standout memories from his time at the club. “I think the win against [Manchester] City, 2-0 away, was quite good – a very good game,” he says. “It is so difficult to win there. The one I remember best is our 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur at home, where we played really, really well from start to finish. “We need to find that kind of level if we want to do something. I think I speak on everyone’s behalf when I say we are not happy where we are. We want to be higher in the table, and we want to play for something. “Right now it has been a season with a lot of ups and downs. Now we need to finish up well and then hopefully we can build something with the new coach, get a good summer and come back in good shape.”

Joachim Andersen
A ‘good summer’ for Andersen could mean a lot more than just a few weeks on the beach to recharge his system. With the European Championships on the horizon, it could be a special few weeks – as Denmark aim to improve on their semi-final finish three years ago. Andersen could face defensive partner Marc Guéhi and England in the group stages. “We’re starting to get closer, but there is still some time left. You can’t think too far ahead in football. It’s something I’ve learned. Of course, it’s still in my head, but there is a risk every time you go out onto the pitch. If you think about it, it happens; you get insanely tired if you run around with a fear.

I’m super ambitious myself Joachim Andersen
21
“Then you will not perform at a good level. That’s how it works best for me.” Focus, then is on the task at hand today: stopping his compatriot once again. “He’s a young lad with a good character, a lot of energy and really good attributes,” Andersen says of Højlund. “He’s quick, he’s strong and he has shown a lot of energy. It’s not easy to play against a player like him, and I think his start [in England] has been really good. “Hopefully he scores a lot of goals for our national team – but I think I can handle him in the games where we are going to play against each other!” A final three games this season, and then the future. Andersen is a huge part of the Palace project under Oliver Glasner, from his colossal performance at Anfield to earning an important clean sheet against Newcastle, and it has been on show as much recently as it was when he first arrived in south London. “We’ve got a good coach and an exciting project,” he says of the years to come. “I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen this summer. I’m super happy at Palace, I’m happy to live in London. I like the players and the people in the club. “The most important thing for me is that the club has a clear project. They are ambitious. I’m super ambitious myself.” It’s fighting talk, and exactly the attitude that Palace supporters

will want to hear from one of their warriors on the pitch. Now, in a new system under Oliver Glasner, Andersen has stepped up a level once again. Calm in possession, aggressive off the ball, a leader both in the dressing room and on the pitch, he is the modern-day centre-back that so many Premier League teams spend entire transfer windows searching for. A glittering international summer could await, but for now focus is – as it has been all season – on pushing for the very highest standard in south London. Whether it’s on the training pitch or roared on by a raucous Selhurst Park on a Saturday afternoon, Andersen has one clear aim: to win. Under Oliver Glasner, it’s an ambition he is fulfilling time and time again

This season, we’re putting your questions to members of the Palace squad. To have a chance of seeing your question answered by a first-team star, just head to cpfc.co.uk and submit your burning enquiries…
Joachim Andersen
Who is the best striker you have faced in the Premier League?
Who is the hardest player to play against in training? Eze is really difficult with his skills. He’s really good at dribbling. Michael Olise is also really good, and Jordan Ayew is really strong, so for me these three players are difficult.
It must be Erling Haaland. He’s a top player, he’s quick, he’s strong, and the numbers he produces are unbelievable. He’s a tough one and you need to be on your toes to deliver a good performance against a guy like him. He is the best striker in the world at the moment, but when I’m on the pitch, he’s just a player like any other player. I’ve played against him a few times now. He’s a fellow Scandinavian guy, so it’s always good fun to speak a little bit of Danish or Norwegian together. I know his strengths and his weaknesses, like any other player from another team. I know what I have to do. the follow-up
What do you enjoy about fashion? I spend enough time in tracksuits at training! Why would I choose to wear more in my free time? I like to keep it timeless, you know? Most footballers wear these high-end brands, big labels, and want to show off and stuff. It can work for some, but that just isn’t my style.

Opposition preview After finishing third last season and reaching two cup finals, winning the League Cup, it’s safe to say that Manchester United’s second season under Erik ten Hag has not gone as well as they might have imagined. An injury-blighted campaign has seen a league-record 61 separate cases of injury since August, and the integration of many academy youngsters into the matchday squads. A dire winter period saw them lose vital ground in the race for the Champions League places and slip out of the competition itself in the group stages, with a League Cup exit to Newcastle meaning any hope of silverware was quickly reliant on success in the FA Cup.

manchester united Having reached the FA Cup final thanks to two remarkable games – the first a spirited lastminute comeback win against biggest rivals Liverpool, the second a less morale-boosting penalty shoot-out victory over Coventry City at Wembley – a second successive Manchester derby final awaits. Focus until then can turn to the rest of the league campaign, and with the top four now a mathematical impossibility, Ten Hag will be prioritising confirmation of their Europa League status, and the return of significant players from injury – as well as building morale heading into a hugely important first summer under INEOS ownership, which could set the tone for the start of the new campaign.
Manager erik ten hag Ten Hag won four straight titles at Ajax and sent shockwaves around Europe with a 4-1 win at the Bernabeu, before moving to Man Utd in 2022. He won the League Cup and finished third in his first season, but has struggled to repeat that success amid an injury crisis and off-field issues this time around.

briefing What’s the story? Founded by railway workers as Newton Heath in 1878, Manchester United’s modern identity was borne of a financial crisis in 1902. With huge debts and a winding-up order issued, captain Harry Stafford secured financing when his St Bernard’s dog Major escaped and found local brewer John Henry Davies, whose daughter was so smitten with the dog that he was persuaded to help save the club. Having moved from Newton Heath, they debated a new name, and – after supposedly disregarding ‘Celtic’ and ‘Central’ – chose ‘United’ as a new suffix, and the modern behemoth was born. After neighbours Manchester City were engulfed in a financial scandal, United’s first great manager Ernest Magnall picked
off several key players and led the club to two league titles and an FA Cup, with the team moving to Old Trafford in 1910. Matt Busby transformed the club after the Second World War alongside assistant Jimmy Murphy, winning back-to-back titles in 1956 and 1957 with an exceptionally young, home-grown side and becoming the first English team to compete in the European Cup – before disaster struck. The Munich Air Disaster on 6th February 1958 killed 23 people, including talisman Duncan Edwards (see page 54 for Palace’s tribute) and seven more players, with many others – including Busby – significantly injured. He and Murphy rebuilt the side around Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law, and led the club to European glory a decade later.
After inconsistency – and even relegation – in the 1970s and ‘80s, Sir Alex Ferguson’s arrival precipitated another period of success, winning 13 of the first 20 Premier League titles, two European Cups and four FA Cups, inspired first by the home-grown ‘Class of 92’ including Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, and later by young superstars like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

the greatest manager Sir Matt Busby The late, great Hugh McIlvanney wrote of Busby: “Granting him a knighthood did not elevate him. It raised, however briefly, the whole dubious phenomenon of the honours system.” Such was the regard for the man who built one of the country’s greatest sides, and then rebuilt it after it was tragically wiped out by the Munich Air Disaster – having sustained life-threatening injuries himself. Busby won five league titles and a European Cup at Old Trafford.

“Manchester United have reached the promised land,” roared Clive Tyldesley as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer poked home a 93rd-minute winner. “No one will ever win a European Cup final quite as dramatically as this.” A goal down heading into three minutes of added time, two David Beckham corners led to goals from Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer, and – fittingly, on what would have been Sir Matt Busby’s birthday – a side inspired by academy graduates completed an historic treble.

The man who first dubbed Old Trafford ‘The Theatre of Dreams’. Charlton survived the crash in Munich as a 20-year-old, losing many of his friends and heroes and forced to rebuild a shattered life. He went on to become both Manchester United and England’s greatest-ever player, the only Englishman to win the European Cup, the World Cup and the Balon d’Or. He later looked back on his debut aged 18 with misty-eyed poeticism, telling himself: “Bobby lad, there are no two ways about it. You are now in paradise.”

Eagle Eye Laurie Whitwell has covered Manchester United for The Athletic for the last five years, after spending five years covering Midlands football at the Daily Mail.
What’s caused Man Utd’s struggles for consistency this season? Injuries have played a big part, with Erik ten Hag rarely able to select his best side, or even a settled one. The defence in particular has changed regularly, with Lisandro Martínez – so crucial to how Ten Hag wants to play – out for the vast majority of the campaign. The form of Casemiro and Marcus Rashford has dropped dramatically, with Rasmus Højlund having ups and downs as would be expected of a young striker new to the league. Ten Hag’s connection to his players has also come into question, there has been a change of ownership, while the issues around Jadon Sancho and Antony have caused further turbulence. Who is a name for the future to keep an eye on? Ethan Wheatley became the 250th academy graduate to play for Manchester United when he came on against Sheffield United, so there will be hope he can make an impact. Part of the Under-18s double winners, Finley McAllister is seen as a player of quality and character.
What will be the key focus in preparing for 24/25? Addressing the manager situation. Ten Hag has been involved in planning for next season but INEOS will evaluate the situation come the end of the current campaign. The squad also needs significant reshaping, with at least one centre-forward required to balance the overdue departure of Anthony Martial, and more positions also needing enhancement. Several other first-teamers could leave or be sold, with financial regulations a consideration due to the lack of Champions League football.
What have been the main positives from the campaign? The emergence of Kobbie Mainoo is a standout reason for United fans to be cheerful. His maturity at 19-years-old gives cause for optimism over United’s midfield for future years. Alejandro Garnacho establishing himself as an effective starter is another major plus.
manchester united
Who is Utd’s most important player – and whose contribution flies under the radar? Bruno Fernandes has reminded recently that he remains the most important player for United. He is central to so much attacking play and is ever-present. Diogo Dalot has had a dramatically improved season, which might go unnoticed outside Old Trafford. Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay have enjoyed very good campaigns after nearly being sold last summer.

We meet again From memorable meetings to tense transfers to shared stories, Palace have their own personal tale to tell for each of our Premier League opposition this season. Here, a final day matches a season to remember…
A FITTING FINALE It was a fitting finale to what had become an historic season at Crystal Palace: Manchester United at Selhurst Park on 11th May 1991. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were preparing to travel to Rotterdam for the European Cup Winners’ Cup four days later, and had asked for the match to be moved forward to the Friday evening for an extra day of rest; this request was rejected by the police. The previous Saturday, Palace had won 3-0 at Plough Lane against Wimbledon – their last game at the ground – thanks to an Ian Wright hat-trick, and were hoping the momentum would carry them into this final day showdown. Mark Bright had returned from injury, but Eric Young was still absent following Martin Keown’s dreadful challenge during the Everton game, so recent signing Paul Bodin continued at left-back. Despite Virgin’s hot-air balloon failing to take off, hundreds of red and blue balloons took to the sky prior to kick-off, and proved a favourable omen: the Eagles got off to a flying start. In just the third minute, United ‘keeper Gary Walsh
dropped John Salako’s corner at the feet of Wright, who prodded home. Nigel Martyn had very few saves to make before the break, and in the second-half Palace pushed forwards once again. Approaching the hour mark, both Bright and Eddie McGoldrick had efforts repelled,
cross for Wright and Bright. “Right from the off Brighty was just moaning,” he later told cpfc.co.uk. “He wasn’t happy and nor was Ian either. I ended up getting my two goals and I think Wrighty came up to me and apologised after, but I think Brighty didn’t speak to me for about three weeks…" At full-time, the news was bittersweet: both club and supporters already knew that European football the following season was already denied despite our third-place finish. The squad completed a lap of honour, and later that evening skipper Geoff Thomas collected his second ‘Player of the Year’ award.
Palace: Martyn, Humphrey, Bodin, Osborn, Shaw, Thorn, Salako, Thomas, Bright, Wright, McGoldrick (Gray 78). only for Salako to rifle home the loose ball. It got even better soon after, when he added a third from 25 yards out. Salako later admitted that he needed two goals in the game to earn his bonus, so took every opportunity to shoot rather than manchester united
Man Utd: Walsh, Irwin, Donaghy, Bruce, Webb, Pallister (Beardsmore 26), Kanchelskis, Ince, Robins (Wratten 71), Ferguson, Wallace

UP FOR THE CUP Six thousand, seven hundred and ninety-six human beings and I was one of them. One Red and Blue soul added to the pile that constituted an all-time record attendance for a Crystal Palace Women’s game. That in itself is history, both personal and public. On a purely personal level, what threatened to catapult that stat into immediate obscurity was me being one of that number to witness a trophy being lifted by the Eagles. Laura Kaminski and her remarkable young charges (absolute baller Araya Dennis and Irish international Abbie Larkin are younger than my daughter) will never know how much emotional closure that moment gave me, unless they read my column I guess – it’s good hangover therapy, guys, just saying. Special shout of love also to Elise Hughes, nursing a horribly timed cruciate ligament injury, and whose goals have been instrumental in getting us here.
Now, maybe the more cynical among you will say it’s a secondtier trophy, the real achievements will be in WSL’s top division,

second tier in 1994? To the last question I’d have to say, in a word? No. In four words – because I missed it. Never saw it other than in retrospect. And here’s the rub: I’ve never seen any iteration of Crystal Palace Football Club ever win anything. Like, ever. Let’s deep dive. 1905/06 Southern Football League, Division Two, Champions: Yeah, still kicking myself for missing that moment. 1920/21 English Football League, Division Three, Champions (third-tier): My dad didn’t even have the common courtesy to be born yet. Interesting sidenote though – my grandad was playing for Charlton Athletic around that time. True story. 1978/79 English Football League, Division Two, Champions (second-tier): As a bright-eyed oneyear-old I really should’ve got up off my Pampered behind and crawled to Selhurst to see the celebrations after Swindlehurst’s late strike sealed a 2-0 win over Burnley to steal the title from Brighton. What was I thinking?
43
1990/91 The Full Members' Cup, Winners: I had precisely zero idea that the Full Members' Cup existed. Had not even an inkling that any of this was even happening. The only football I knew for certain to be real was whatever The Big Match was on ITV, the FA Cup on the BBC or the World Cup on both. Back then, I’m pretty sure I believed that with every single professional football fixture in the world combined, there were around 24 games played annually. 1993/94 English Football League, Division One, Champions (second-tier): First my dad couldn’t be bothered to be born, then my mum has the audacity to take me and two of my mates (one of whom was also a Palace fan) on an amazing trip to Amsterdam for the weekend. We were 16 in an innocent pre-internet era, in a
major foreign city for the first time, completely and utterly engrossed. I’ll be real with you – trying to work out the Dutch equivalent of Teletext and hoping it had score updates from the English Second Division weirdly never played a part in proceedings. What I did see live, on television at least, was us losing the FA Cup to Manchester United in 1990. I recorded it on VHS (ask your dad, Abbie), drew the Eagle crest on the long TDK sticker (brand loyalty before we even had the branding – kudos to me) and used red and blue felt tips to write: BEN’S TAPE, DO NOT RECORD OVER. I still have it somewhere. Twenty-six years later I was there in full body, spirit and voice at Wembley to watch the worst sequel since The Matrix Reloaded, right there in the north west London borough I grew up in. ben bailey-smith
Today we are greeted by a new dawn. Two upwardly mobile Crystal Palace teams, punching way above their weight and building new generations of fans, hungry to witness more of what I finally managed to experience on 29th April 2024 (add that to the list, Mr Wiki). And why not? If we can keep these two sets of heroes away from the big money vultures in the summer, who’s to say both the Men’s and Women’s teams can’t make a splash in 24/25? A little League Cup run here, a Women’s FA Cup run there? Why the heck not? In LK and the OG we have two individuals with big dreams and bigger visions – the kind that can go a long way. Yes, I’ve missed a whole lot over the years, but there’s so many more moments to look forward to. UTP!

Crystal Palace Under-21s have confirmed their place in the 2023/24 Premier League 2 play-offs, here’s everything you need to know about our season so far and the pathway to the final.
D
arren Powell’s side recorded a ninth place finish in this season’s Premier League 2, which – unlike the campaigns that came before it – is more than enough to be in the running for the title come the season end. The new format of the PL2 sees the league take inspiration from the tournament structure used in chess, and a similar model to the one which will be deployed in the UEFA Champions League, starting from 2024/25. Each of the 26 Category 1 teams played a seeded set of 20 matches in the regular season to determine their place, with the top 16 advancing to the play-offs. Palace’s finish inside the top 12 also guarantees them a place in next season’s Premier League International Cup – the competition they are hoping to win on Wednesday 15th May against PSV Eindhoven at Selhurst Park. The Eagles got off to a fantastic start in their opening game of the season, with a lastgasp 3-2 win over Manchester
United. Jadan Raymond netted the winner in the 98th minute. After losing five in a row, their fortunes changed with a 3-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at the end of October. This kick-started a three game winning streak which also saw the side put seven past Leeds United and three past last season’s champions Manchester City.
Palace’s finish inside the top 12 also guarantees them a place in next season’s Premier League International Cup The turn of the year saw the side pick up pace and climb the table, as they went on a five-game unbeaten run. The in-form Franco Umeh helped Palace fight back to draw 3-3 against Blackburn Rovers in their first league game of 2024, before going on to score the winner academy
against Brighton & Hove Albion just over a week later. Back-to-back wins against Stoke City and Aston Villa, amidst a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions, saw Palace enter the top 16 and never look back. Two draws against Chelsea and Everton in early April followed, before Powell’s men managed to mathematically confirm their place in the next round with a 3-2 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Smashing five past tabletopping Tottenham Hotspur with no reply rounded off the initial group phase for Palace, confirming their ninth place finish and round of 16 play-off game against Liverpool who finished in eighth. Should the side overcome Liverpool, they will either face Spurs once again or Aston Villa in the quarter-finals away from home. Overcoming either of them would set up a potential semi-final against heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester United or Chelsea, or a clash with Brighton & Hove Albion

Some of Palace’s top Academy prospects have been gaining experience out on loan throughout 2023/24. With most of their campaigns having drawn to a close, here’s how some of our loanees have got on this season.
Owen Goodman Goalkeeper Goodman departed on loan to League Two Colchester United in early July, getting a pre-season campaign under his belt before starting as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Us in August. His debut at Cardiff City in the EFL Cup first round saw him make seven saves, taking the game to penalties. He made a fantastic save in the shootout to stop Ruben Colwill’s opening penalty, even as Colchester were knocked out. In his first 10 league games, Goodman kept two clean sheets and was named in the League Two Team of the Week on backto-back occasions. Despite multiple changes of manager, Goodman made 40 appearances in total and was crucial in Colchester narrowly staying up by three points, in what became a standout season for the young ‘keeper which will stand him in good stead for the future.
to gain a wealth of experience. A spell at Port Vale earlier in the first half of the campaign saw him keep one clean sheet. After recovering from injury, he moved on to AFC Wimbledon in the second part of 2023/24, where he enjoyed a consistent and successful spell in the starting XI.
Balmer quickly established himself as a first-choice defender at the Cherry Red Records Stadium and was a dangerous threat with his long throws. His first goal came after six games, helping the Dons to a 2-0 win over Notts County, and going on to notch three assists in his final four games as Wimbledon finished just outside the play-off places.
malachi boateng Another loan spell in Scotland for Boateng saw him move to recently promoted Dundee in the Scottish Premiership after a strong showing at Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship last season. He featured from the start in all but one of his first 20 games, anchoring the midfield against the likes of Celtic and Rangers. Boateng’s performances helped Dundee to finish within the top six after the initial 33-game phase of the Scottish Premiership, meaning they could be in with a chance of European football next season if they do well in their remaining games.
Kofi Balmer Two loan spells at two different clubs have seen Balmer continue Academy
47
killian phillips Like Balmer, Phillips had two different loan spells. He moved on loan to Wycombe Wanderers at the start of the campaign and, after minor injury setbacks, established himself as a starter in the League One side. His first goal for the Chairboys came in the FA Cup first-round clash against Bradford City, the opener in a 2-1 win to send them through to the next stage. His second came a few weeks later against Reading in the league. Phillips then made a switch across the border as he went on loan to Aberdeen, where he helped the side to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park, where Aberdeen were agonisingly knocked out by Celtic on penalties.
ademola ola-adebomi The towering striker went out on loan to League One Burton Albion in the second part of the season, where he was tasked with leading the line to keep the Brewers in the third tier. In what was his third game for the club, Ola-Adebomi notched an assist for Mark Helm’s winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over Bristol Rovers. This helped him establish his place in the side, and he went on to score his first goal against Peterborough United a month later. Despite struggling with injuries as the season wore on, his cameos and presence were enough to play a part in helping Burton stay up in dramatic fashion, surviving in League One by three points.
tayo adaramola Tayo Adaramola followed Ola-Adebomi, heading out on a half-season loan. The left-back moved to Belgium to help RWD Molenbeek in an effort to keep the side in the Belgian Pro League. He has hit the ground running for Molenbeek, starting in more than 10 of the games he has been eligible for and helping them out of the drop zone. They are currently in the midst of a four-team relegation play-off group and have two more games left to secure their place in the Belgian top flight for another season

Crystal Palace Women’s draw against Sunderland, in front of a record crowd at Selhurst Park last weekend, saw them seal not only the Women’s Championship title and promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League, but a place in club history.
title winners Some 6,796 fans purchased tickets for the final-day fixture – the third time Palace Women have set a new record crowd this season – which saw the Eagles start the day with a three-point lead, and a 22-stronger goal difference, over second-placed Charlton. And despite our south London rivals winning 2-0 against Southampton at the Valley, they never came close to spoiling a celebratory day in SE25 – with promotion, the title and a trophy lift all confirmed by a 0-0 draw against Sunderland. The match was admittedly a slower burner for on-the-pitch entertainment, with the secondbest defence in the division, Sunderland’s, coming up against the fourth-best in Palace’s – and openings ultimately proved hard to come by. But Molly Sharpe went close for Palace on three occasions in the first-half from crosses, while Demi Lambourne produced an excellent save from Ellen Jones
to keep Sunderland at bay on the stroke of half-time. After the interval, both teams hit the woodwork as Izzy Atkinson’s mis-hit cross almost found the top corner for Palace, whilst Sunderland’s Jenna Dear hit the crossbar with a fantastic effort from 30 yards. But ultimately, a 0-0 draw would more than do for Palace’s players and staff, who – upon hearing the full-time whistle – raced onto the Selhurst Park pitch in their droves to celebrate a simply remarkable campaign. The day, the occasion, the Championship title – and with it, promotion to the 2024/25 Women’s Super League, putting the Eagles in the top-flight for the first time… it all belonged to Crystal Palace.
the numbers Palace's total of 46 points saw the Eagles finish top of the Championship for the first time in the club’s history, leading to a historic promotion. women
At the culmination of a gripping title race, Laura Kaminski's side finished ahead of Charlton Athletic (45 points), Sunderland (41) and Southampton (39). The Eagles were in blistering form throughout the campaign, scoring a sensational 55 goals in their 22 matches – an average of 2.5 goals per game, and some 16 more than any other side. They recorded the most wins of any team – 14 from 22 games – and the second-fewest defeats (4), whilst conceding the Championship’s fourth-lowest ‘goals against’ tally (20). It all amounted to an outstanding first season at the club for head coach Laura Kaminski, Head of Women’s Football Grace Williams, new captain Aimee Everett, and their brilliant squad. There were even two chart-toppers in their midst: Elise Hughes, who finished as Championship top goalscorer (16 goals in 21 league games), and Fliss Gibbons, who recorded more assists (eight in 19) than any other Championship player.

the reaction Head coach Laura Kaminski: “It feels amazing. Congratulations to everyone involved. All the staff, all the players, everyone's been outstanding all year. “Overall, I can't thank everyone enough. Steve [Parish], Dougie [Freedman], the board, Grace Williams, all the staff, all the players have been absolutely class all year-round. “I think the fan experience is quality. To be here… this is our home. What a fantastic stadium and what a place to lift the trophy.”
captain aimee everett: “Coming into the club three years ago, I never imagined that this would happen. Even at the start of the season, to be able to do that, break records with this club… this club is very special and the fans are involved in that. “I wear the armband, but we've got a lot of leaders within the group. Everyone’s bought into the philosophy, the values, the culture of the club, and I think that's what's got us to where we are today. “It’s honestly an amazing feeling. We just want to enjoy this moment now and celebrate, but I think there’s lots to look forward to, and a lot of excitement to come.”
top scorer elise hughes: “Personally, it’s great for me. But the fact that it's helped the team in a small way is everything I ever wanted – and if I'm honest, it's my job, so I'm glad I was able to do my
job! For the players, for the staff, they put a lot of trust in me. And I've just repaid them. That's all I can do. “My teammates around me have helped me score the goals. I know they have. I'm glad that I could take responsibility when I needed to and as a player, that's all I can ask. The goals were an added bonus because I just love scoring, so I'm glad we won as many games as we did.” women
chairman steve parish 0n x: “So incredibly proud and pleased for Crystal Palace Women. This is such an incredible achievement. “Huge congrats to the incredible manager Laura Kaminski, her staff, to Grace Williams for her leadership and, of course, this special group of players. “Barclays Women’s Super League, here we come!”

History Makers Palace players past and tantalising titbits from eras gone by: club historian Ian King takes us through the wacky, weird and wonderful history of Crystal Palace one new tale at a time.
JOHN (JACK) ROBSON Born in Durham way back in 1860, John Robson’s reputation as a manager was established at Middlesbrough, with whom he was associated for 17 years as a goalkeeper and an administrator – even making a name for frugality when declining to travel with the team to away fixtures in an effort to save money. In 1905, Palace were looking for a new manager and cast their eyes northwards, where two months earlier Robson had been involved in the first £1,000 transfer: Alf Common to Middlesbrough. Since then, rumours had begun to swirl of financial irregularities at the club, and so Robson had resigned in order to distance himself from the money men.
Palace immediately stepped in to announce him as manager. While the club had obtained the calibre of players required to play at a higher level, they were elected to the Southern League Division Two, and so processed to the title with just a single defeat in 24 games. The following season they were able to establish themselves in the First Division, but the outstanding highlight was one of the great FA Cup shocks: victory at holders Newcastle United, then considered the finest team in the country, in January 1907. Despite this success, the club was falling behind with rent arrears for their ground, and before the end of the season the history makers
board decided to appoint club secretary Edmund Goodman as manager on a far lesser salary than Robson. It was a harsh decision, and Robson was forced to find employment with Croydon Common before moving to Brighton. In December 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, Robson became Manchester United’s manager – but the war was decimating the younger male population and, after finishing his first season in 18th, he steered the club through four seasons of wartime fixtures. His health continued to decline, and in December 1921 he had to resign, passing away from pneumonia a month later. United were relegated that same season, but the club organised a testimonial collection for his family, to which Crystal Palace also contributed.
53
DEBUTS AND CURTAIN CALLS Palace’s first ever game in the First Division came against Manchester United in August 1969, meaning debuts for new arrivals Roger Hynd and Gerry Queen – the latter scoring. Alan Whittle made his debut in the remarkable 5-0 victory in December 1972, also finding the back of the net. Defender Andy Thorn began his Palace career against United in December 1989, and the following May John Pemberton and Gary O’Reilly ended their time at the club in the FA Cup final replay. Striker Chris Armstrong pulled on a Palace shirt for the first time against the Red Devils in September 1992, while the FA Cup Final in 2016 were the last games for Dwight Gayle and Adrian Mariappa. Cheikhou Kouyaté said farewell against United in the final game of the season in May 2022.
Paul Ifill with Hereford's Dean Beckwith
Brief encounters HEREFORD UNITED Hereford United were formed 100 years ago, playing in the Birmingham & District Leagues, but entering the Southern League after the Second World War. The club came to prominence with the FA Cup run in 1972, and that summer were elected into the Football League Division Four in place of Barrow. Instant success followed as they reached Division Two in 1976, but they immediately fell back to the fourth tier.
weird and wonderful When Palace travelled to Cardiff City in January 1937, it would be an understatement to describe the pitch as ‘unplayable’ by modern-day standards. A catastrophic fire at Ninian Park had destroyed the main stand, the dressing rooms and the offices, along with most of the club’s gear.
history makers
The two sides met in the mid-70s in Division Three, facing one another four times and drawing three, with Palace losing the other. The clubs have been drawn together twice in cup competitions in 1962 and 2008, both resulting in Palace victories at Selhurst Park. The club lost its league status in 1997 and in 2014 were forced into dissolution. A new club, Hereford FC, was set up in its place, which continues to play at Edgar Street and currently compete in the National League North.
Thousands of gallons of water had been poured all over the pitch, leading to muddy conditions and some nasty surprises, including tools like spanners and pincers discovered amidst the muck. The nets had been borrowed from a local junior club, and both goals in the 1-1 draw that somehow ensued saw the ball sail through the net and out of the other side.

Times have changed over Crystal Palace’s rich and storied history. In each edition, we dust off the archive and reprint a story from one of the club’s historical programmes. This week, we hear a unique tribute from south London to the Old Trafford…
Crystal Palace √ Manchester United – 22 February 2020
S
t Francis Parish Church, Dudley, proudly houses a little-known tribute to one of football’s most talented characters. St Francis is little over two miles from 23 Malvern Crescent, the council-owned house where Duncan Edwards was born, and just half a mile from 31 Elm Road, where the future Manchester United icon would grow up knocking a ball around his front and back garden for hours. Stepping inside the small, angular church and turning left, however, those who look upwards will notice Crystal Palace’s first club crest displayed in intricate stained glass. A church window may seem an unusual place to house a footballing badge – especially with so little connecting south London and Dudley – but there is a touching reason the Midlands town proudly holds such a nod to the Eagles. The stained glass in question is a tribute to Edwards, and shows the left-half memorialised in United and England kit with the words ‘God is with
us for our Captain’ and ‘Though there be many members yet is there one body’ adorning ribbons across his chest. Underneath the depiction of Edwards in United’s plunging red and white kit, an inscription reads: ‘Thanking God for the Life of Duncan Edwards, died at Munich, February 1958.’ On 6th February 1958, a plane carrying Edwards and his United teammates, staff, fans and journalists tragically crashed following take-off after a refuelling stop in Munich, Germany. Two weeks later, Edwards resultantly lost his life after a heroic FROM THE ARCHIVE

battle. In total, 23 people died from the Munich air tragedy. The football world came together in grief and support of Manchester United, which lost eight players in the disaster. If there was any reason beyond decency and respect, the exact grounds why Palace responded to St Francis’ call are unknown, but the club had several links with the Busby Babes and, namely, Edwards, even before February 1958. One link surrounds Palace forward Peter Berry, whose brother Johnny was one of the players involved in the Munich crash. Peter, the younger Berry brother, had a game for Palace two days after the tragedy occurred, but flew out to Munich to support his sibling at the next available chance. United’s Johnny sustained severe injuries from the accident; at one stage seemingly its worst affected survivor. Johnny also suffered amnesia from the crash and was treated on a bed of ice as he and Duncan Edwards simultaneously fought to stay alive. Of course, of the two, only Johnny survived.
Johnny no doubt held a deep affinity for his former teammate Edwards, and his little brother Peter surely felt similarly connected to the iconic Busby Babe. Peter didn’t leave Palace until May 1958, three months after the disaster, and his relationship with the club may well have played a part in its financial support of the Edwards memorial in 1961. But the Glaziers were linked with Edwards before then, too, when, in 1956, Palace hosted him alongside Bill Foulkes and a teenage Bobby Charlton in a friendly at Selhurst Park. Conscribed professional footballers took on the south Londoners in an Army XI and that day, in front of just 4,700 spectators, Edwards captivated the crowd, pulling the Army side from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Palace. The below excerpt describes it best, taken from an excellent Croydon Advertiser report by Gerald Williams (who, incidentally, became the Daily Mail’s Manchester football correspondent after Eric Thompson lost his life in the Munich crash). FROM THE ARCHIVE
“You get the sort of game where you think: ‘What on earth can I write about that?’ and you get the games where you have to ask yourself: ‘Now, what can I possibly leave out?’ Monday’s floodlit friendly at Selhurst Park was unquestionably in the second category. “You most certainly cannot leave out the story of Duncan Edwards, the Army left half, who came to Selhurst fresh from playing for England against Ireland on Saturday. For, with only five minutes remaining, and Palace leading the Army 3-1, Edwards, Manchester United’s 14-stone wonder boy, decided something drastic was needed. “So, having moved himself up to the attack, where he became an unspecified inside forward, he promptly thumped in two of the most casually brilliant goals you could wish to see, both from just inside the penalty area. No, there is headline material galore in Duncan Edwards’ feat. You cannot possibly leave that out.” Indeed, Edwards’ rightful inclusion in footballing history cannot be left out. And, even for two clubs separated by 200 miles, his tragedy cannot be overlooked. When Sir Matt Busby unveiled St Francis’ tribute to Edwards, he said: “These windows should keep alive his name forever, and they will shine always.” Whatever its reason for helping ensure Edwards’ legacy continues to shine, Crystal Palace Football Club can be proud it did so This article is an abridged version of the original.

Football, fashion, music and more – step back in time to an era that had it all…
At the

t
he season which had it all: drama and jeopardy, the departure of old favourites and the introduction of new stars. Palace were not tipped to gain promotion in 2012/13, but they did it in some style. After the departure of Dougie Freedman, Ian Holloway’s men
had claimed a play-off place despite a barren run of one win in 10 games as the season drew to a close. In the semi-finals, they had edged past rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, winning on the south coast thanks to the heroics of a 21-year-old Wilfried Zaha (think ‘ZAHA – OH YES!’). Watford at Wembley beckoned. The Hornets were the clear favourites overall, but a resilient display from the Eagles, including great goalkeeping from Julian Speroni, dragged the clash into extra-time. As the London sun beat down, manager Ian Holloway explained that he saw a tactical weakness in the Watford defence in the shape of Marco Cassetti. Thankfully, he had just the man to exploit it. “Just keep taking him [Cassetti] on,” Holloway told Wilfried Zaha. “He’ll get booked or he’ll get sent off.” “They moved him four times to try and get him away from Wilf,” Holloway remembered years later. “They put him leftback, they put him right-back, they put him sweeper, and I just said: ‘Stay there.’ My lads retro palace
knew. We just keep feeding Wilf and what happened?” What happened was a foul on Zaha inside the box at the end of the first-half of extra-time, resulting in a penalty which Kevin Phillips duly dispatched against his former club. After a tense finish – including a Joel Ward goalline clearance in the dying moments – Palace were back in the Premier League.

PALACE PLAYERS JOIN COMMUNITY SHOWCASE
P
alace for Life’s Match of the Day community feature was broadcast last week, where we invited the entire Palace men and women’s teams and managers to get involved with a variety of our programmes to get an idea of the work we do with young south Londoners all year round. Held at the Academy dome, players experienced a twist on oneto-one mentoring, where our own participants delivered a mentoring session with them. Players took penalties with our famous DS Eagles, brushed up on their maths and numeracy skills, and were challenged by our Get Involved, Premier League Kicks, and Girls Emerging Talent Centre participants. “It’s a fantastic afternoon for us supporting the Foundation and all the activities they are doing,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner. “When you come here, you are told that it’s so nice for the children, but it’s a great experience for all of us as well to interact with the children, to play and have fun with them.” Two first-team squads, 100 Palace for Life participants and six
different programmes were filmed by the BBC camera crew, which aired the morning of Palace’s 5-2 triumph over West Ham and Palace Women’s 2-0 win against Lewes. The teams were split up into groups of six or seven and spent 10 minutes with each programme, meeting the foundation
participants. One programme that really stood out to Ebere Eze was the mentoring session. “The mentorship programme is so key because there are people that are growing up, being influenced by the different people around them,” he said. “These mentors are guiding
63
them and keeping them on the straight and narrow.” Sarah Hoddy, Targeted Intervention Manager at Palace for Life, spoke about the mentoring we offer. “We provide a one-toone mentoring service that’s not football based. It’s a completely free service to access. Young people

Another programme present at the day was our flagship community programme, Premier League Kicks. “Crystal Palace as a football club are really proud of the work they do in the community and they do so much for it and without things like this we wouldn’t be where we are,” said Palace defender Fliss Gibbons, who had a kickaround with the participants. “It’s really nice for us to come down and hopefully make their days a little bit better.”
