Welcome back to Selhurst Park for this afternoon’s game. Congratulations to Unai Emery, his staff and his team on qualifying for the Champions League. It is well deserved, and he and the players have done an excellent job – when he came in they were 14th, and he finished seventh and now, in his first full season, fourth. It is a fantastic achievement.

From the first game after we arrived against Burnley, you have given us so much energy and helped us to be successful. We really appreciate all of the support and the incredible atmosphere at Selhurst Park, and we couldn’t have done it without you. We head into this final game of the season on a high after a fantastic run of results, and we hope we can send everyone off into the summer break with a smile on their faces.

It was a special evening at Selhurst Park, with the atmosphere from kick-off at its very best, and we began with real intent to get forward, scoring twice before the break. There is always room to improve, however, and after the manager had given us instructions at half-time we dominated more in the second-half, with the boys leaving everything out on the pitch. Just as it was against Man Utd, your support at Molineux was exceptional, and we could hear you loud and clear throughout the 90 minutes. It was another big win, as we put ourselves in a strong position and then defended with real grit and intensity after going down to 10 men late on. With five wins in six games, including against some of the best sides in the Premier League, everyone is full of confidence heading into today’s game. We will need to be at our best, because Aston Villa have shown by qualifying for the Champions

League that they are playing at the very top-level. We have shown, however, that we can go into any game and impose ourselves, and that is what we hope to do today in front of you for the final time in the 2023/24 campaign.

What an extraordinary night it was against Manchester United, with all of us privileged to witness one of the great Selhurst Park results, evoking shades of Don Rogers in 1972 as the team put one of the biggest clubs in the world to the sword. There were too many standout performances to name, but the noise you made as the players walked off after the final whistle was incredible. To follow up a result like that by winning away from home just five days later shows the strength of this side, and we hope we can carry that momentum into the final day.

Which one rule would you change in football? Nigel Boyce Handball. I don’t know when it is handball! I have switched off now. It’s just a roll of the dice and you find out what happens.

How did you come to settle on your preferred formation and style of play?

Who is the funniest player in training? Evan Formagus It is maybe Michael Olise, just because sometimes he does things nobody expects…

Who is the dressing room DJ – and do you approve of their taste? Peter London I actually don’t know! The dressing room is the players’ room, and I don’t want to spend too much time in there because it is their environment. Of course, before the game I am in, but I have just entered the dressing room and the music is already on. I will say that I have three children of different ages, so I am used to having to hear all kinds of music.

Nicholas Stokes It just depends on the players we have. We look at the strengths we have, or the individual players, and it’s like a puzzle: how can we put this together so there is a good picture at the end? Here it was the same.

We saw the players – of course we watched them before and then we saw them in training – and we thought it could fit. Muñoz is very offensive, but maybe we need a little bit to keep the balance, so then maybe it is having three with Joa, the leadership. Then with our offensive players it is maybe having them more inside than too wide so they can score goals. Then we try it in training, and we saw very quickly that this could work. We decided to start in this 3-4-3 formation, but very often it changes. It’s just a title ‘3-4-3’, but very often you will find us in a different formation on the pitch.

I know you enjoy basketball – is there a basketball coach, style or aspect of the sport which has influenced you as a coach? Tim Beyers Not a style, but I always liked to watch Michael Jordan. When I was younger, I would stay up in the nights to watch his games. I liked his attitude and his winning mentality, and also that he took responsibility.

Did you enjoy the win over Liverpool or Manchester United more?

Do you have any superstitions or rituals you follow on a matchday?

Kelly Lidbetter I know it’s a boring answer, but both – every game. Staying grounded and being humble means respecting every win. No win is worth more than any other. Every win is so difficult because the opponent also wants to win. I’m always having this respect for every team, and it’s always a reward to win a game. It’s never normal. It should never be normal, because that is why we play football.

Rob Rawlins I sometimes wear the same clothes – but I had to change it because it was too warm! I had more as a player where the routine before the game would always be the same but now I’m a little bit more relaxed.

He has a famous quote: “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” I like this. It’s part of development to fail, but the key is not to quit, it’s to learn from your mistakes and take responsibility. It’s no problem to lose a game, but don’t accept it, work on it so you can win. That is what I learned from him. He was one of my idols when I was younger.

How much forward planning goes into integrating an academy player into the first-team?

Was there one moment that made you fall in love with football? Andrew Bloss My mother told me that when I was two, I started to run and kick a ball. I kicked it at walls, I destroyed windows. I don’t know why it happened, it just happened!

David Sprigens You can’t really plan it. Development is never a straight line, it goes in waves. Sometimes it is very quick and other times it takes a bit longer. We watch the players in training and see how quickly they develop, and when we think they are ready it is up to them to do it.

What advice would you give to a young man just starting his coaching career? George Hilder Enjoy what you do – you have to love working with people. That is the most important thing.

Today’s game is my 60th birthday – would you like to still be managing when you are 60?

Who was your footballing idol as a child? gianna birdsall I loved Lothar Matthäus. He had such a great winning mentality, and I like these sportsmen. I see it also in the tennis players: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal. Federer at 40-years-old, getting an injury and working so hard to come back. It is because they love to compete and they love to win. Matthäus was very similar.

Gary Oliver Happy birthday! Let’s say I hope I will find the right moment to retire. Sometimes when you play very long for a club, they don’t tell you but everybody is thinking: ‘I hope he retires’. I wanted to find the right moment, but I had to because of an injury. As a manager, it will be the moment I am not competitive anymore. Then I will say: ‘Thank you very much, I had a nice time but that is it.’ When I feel I don’t have 100 percent of the passion, even it it’s just 99 percent I will retire. The players, the fans, the club all deserve 100 percent Oliver Glasner, and if I can’t give this anymore I will be honest to myself and then I will retire.

What is the best thing about living in England so far – and is there anything you miss?

What is your favourite holiday destination? Martin Stanford South – anywhere warm! I love Spain, Mallorca or Ibiza, and this year I am going to Italy with my wife. Anywhere with warm weather, good food and relaxing.

What is your favourite Austrian dish (mine is Weiner Schnitzel)? Joshua Nadarajan That is mine too! I think Weiner Schnitzel was the only meat I ate until I was about 20-years-old…

Phil Croton From living in Austria I miss my family, of course. But living in London you have so many different opportunities: restaurants, theatres, musicals, sporting events. It’s such a varied culture. What I also really like here is that you can live anonymously, and that is an under-valued quality.

Will you be able to switch off over summer? And if so, how? Marc Williams I want to, but I think I never can. For moments of course, but this is my passion. I can be at home for three or four days with nothing to do and I will switch on my computer and plan the pre-season. This is not work for me, I like it. Of course my wife says ‘why?’ but it’s OK for me. In summer, I can decide when I do it and when not, there are no schedules of games coming up. It’s a little bit more free for me. I will follow our international players as they play, I will message them. I enjoy it!

briefing What’s the story? Like so many professional football teams, Aston Villa were formed by a cricket side looking for a sport to play during the tempestuous winter months. Their first match came against a local rugby side, with the first-half played under rugby rules and the second under Association Football rules – somehow, Villa kept a clean sheet. In 1876, Scotsman George Ramsay happened to spot the players training in Aston Park, and, having been asked to make up the numbers, impressed with his close control and skill on the ball. Soon he was made club captain and drew spectators to watch matches. In 1888, Villa became one of the 12 founding members of the Football League, heading into the competition as the FA Cup holders.

By now George Ramsay was manager, thought to be football’s first professional in the role, and he soon embarked on a golden period, winning six league titles and six FA Cups. After slipping into mediocrity and suffering a first relegation in the interwar period, Villa fell into relative obscurity until the 1970s, certainly compared to their golden era. Soon, however, they were back among the big time when Ron Saunders transformed the club. A League Cup in 1977 was followed by a seventh title in 1981, and then their finest hour: a European Cup victory in 1982 in Rotterdam. Since then, a rollercoaster period has followed: five years after European glory, they were relegated. Two years after that they finished top-flight runnersup, and were second again in the

Premier League’s inaugural season in 1993. Martin O’Neill enjoyed success and regular European finishes in the mid-2000s, before financial turmoil led to relegation in 2016 and three years in the lower tier. Having narrowly survived in the COVID-affected 2019/20 season, they have reemerged under Unai Emery as a major force once more.

Aston Villa became just the fourth English club to win the European Cup, and ensured an English side were crowned champions for a sixth successive season, in 1982, beating Bayern Munich in Rotterdam to seal the club’s finest hour. After losing first choice goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer to injury after just nine minutes, Villa rallied and Peter Withe found the winner after 67 minutes, with Brian Moore’s commentary of the goal still on display on a giant banner at Villa Park to this day.

What have been the key factors in Villa exceeding expectations this season? Unai Emery's no excuse culture. He will not let any mitigating factors come into his or his players' thinking. Villa's schedule has been relentless and injuries have plagued throughout – including two season-ending injuries with Emiliano Buendia and Tyrone Mings after the first game – yet Emery has remained level headed. That type of consistency has complimented Villa's habits on the pitch, where they maintained performance levels, picked up points at times when they have not played well and have a belief that they can beat anyone, through organisation and individual quality. How has Unai Emery inspired such unity within the squad? He has his dressing room leaders, such as John McGinn, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez, while developing younger players, such as Ezri Konsa and Leon Bailey. Emery inspires unity through his meticulous detail – analysis sessions are frequent and long, training sessions are

painstaking in detail, but the players have buy-in due to seeing the preparation crystallise on the pitch with results. Emery has full control over the club's football department, so he is, unequivocally, the individual players look towards to guide them through, and they are appreciative of their own development since he arrived.

Who is Villa’s most important player – and whose contribution flies under the radar? As it is so difficult to distinguish between them, I'll pick two! Villa's most important players are Martínez and Watkins. Both are world class in their respective positions, save and collect so many points during a season and always come up trumps in the biggest moments. Perhaps to the broader public, there is not a realisation as to how good Konsa is (especially when he's at centre-back)! His pace is key to helping Villa's offside trap.

Which positions most need strengthening over summer? Full-back will be key. In the current system, they have to essentially operate as wingers, staying high and wide, so upgrading in those areas should, in theory, help with chance creation on the flanks. Strengthening central midfield is also key, with a lack of depth beyond the first-choice starters. Who is a name for the future to keep an eye on? Morgan Rogers. He signed in January and has taken to the Premier League quicker than either he or Emery imagined. He tends to operate just off Watkins up-front and is already adding goals and key numbers to his game. A full pre-season should only aid his progress further next year.

THRILLER WITH THE VILLA There could not have been a starker difference between the fortunes of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa when the latter arrived at Selhurst Park on 14th December 1968, for just their second visit to SE25. The Glaziers were riding high in Division Two, while the visitors – having only just been relegated from the First Division in 1967 – were languishing at the bottom of the table, with their manager having recently resigned. Mark Lazarus was missing from the Palace line-up, allowing Colin Taylor, the man with the cannonball shot, to return on the left. Having lost the previous home game to would-be champions Derby County, the home fans were hoping for a return to winning ways, but there was disappointment with the turnout of just 11,071 inside the ground. At half-time, the game was goalless despite John Dunn in the Villa goal and the woodwork being denying Steve Kember, Cliff Jackson and Bobby Woodruff as Palace pushed forwards. Just three minutes after the break, Woodruff was at the centre of the action again, as one of his famous long

throws found Colin Taylor, who blazed the ball home for the opener.

only for the Glaziers to restore the two-goal advantage via Roger Hoy – also his first for the club. With three minutes remaining, Colin Taylor smashed home his second and Palace’s fourth, before a rocket from the edge of the penalty area made the score 4-2. The result allowed Palace to leapfrog Millwall into third place in the table. Villa’s season would improve as they finished in mid-table, but Palace, following fixture disruption during a harsh spell of wintry weather, went on a 16 match unbeaten run leading to unforgettable scenes at home to Fulham as they gained promotion to the First Division for the first time.

Yes, we’ve done all the Palacey things expected/ unexpected of us – beat a title chasing behemoth in their own backyard? Tick. Battering Man Utd home and away? Completed it mate. We’ve dabbed every box on the Crystal Palace bingo sheet with our red and blue markers but this time the winnings feel bigger than 20 quid and a bottle of sherry. But list all the personnel from any of those aforementioned periods. Dig up the formations, the tactical approaches. No, this really is different. Olise and Eze as double Tens, Wharton and Hughes the

archetypal Beauty and the Beast, Mateta with the Ba-Ba Boom, a dynamic back three, Tyrick flying up one side, bagging the odd goal, the Wonderful Wizard Muñoz on the other… It’s just magical right now. Seriously – and I cannot stress this seriously enough – if ever a whizz there was, the wizard Muñoz is one because… Well, because, because, because, because, becaaaauuuuse – because of the wonderful things he does. The only irritant? Every fan of a bigger club that I know. I’m sure you’ve had the same conversations with your Arsenal mate, your Chelsea pal, your die-hard Man City friend from Surrey. “Glasner’s got you boys playing hasn’t he? XI for more than five minutes without these monopolising megabullies immediately looking to tear the flesh from our bones? Now, all of you who read my column with any regularity will know I’m a hopeless optimist, but it’s been tested by the certainty everyone outside of the club seems to have that we will lose some or all of these players in the summer. My question would be – with what money? I’m not so sure all these big clubs can just keep splashing the cash willy-nilly in the current climate and I’m also not so sure we need to sell. I think it will boil down to what those players want, deep down. Do they want to try their luck with the European elite? I’m sure they do – they deserve to. But they are also all young. Five words we love to write: Crystal Palace are European champions. The Eagles lifted the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night – find out how…

A European final under the lights at Selhurst Park, in which Crystal Palace are competing, sounds almost too good to be true, but that’s exactly what has happened for two seasons in a row. In a rematch of last season’s final, Crystal Palace Under-21s went one better than last time and exacted revenge against Jong PSV – the youth side of Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. A backs-to-the-wall performance at times saw Darren Powell’s side endure spells of relentless pressure from PSV, but the team’s collective defensive effort and a standout performance between the sticks from Joe Whitworth meant they stayed in the game until making the breakthrough. The goal came in the 67th minute, as David Ozoh won the ball back in midfield and played it through to Roshaun Mathurin. The winger played a quick one-two with Justin Devenny before cutting it back across goal for Franco Umeh. Time almost stood still as the Republic of Ireland youth international fired goalwards, finding the back of the net via a deflection. Selhurst Park erupted.

His 11th goal of a remarkable 2023/24 season saw the Eagles take the lead with just over 20 minutes to play. The silverware was in touching distance, but another barrage of PSV attacks followed. Revenge of sorts, but more importantly victory at last against a formidable opponent and welldeserved silverware. With the sound of Glad All Over echoing around the stadium, they ran off in celebration with the fans and their friends and family. Captain and U21s’ Player of the Season Whitworth held the trophy aloft as the fireworks exploded to cap off another hugely successful season as a Category 1 Academy. Head coach Powell, amidst the celebrations, was full of praise for his side: “It’s massive, massive – and for the players as well. I say for the players, but coming here last year and losing the final… we couldn't do it again. We couldn't do it again, and that was the mantra. “We wanted to, by all means, win it. I mean, it wasn't our best performance, but we were up against a really good side. They were a really good side last year, and again, they've just got very

good players. And then we rode our luck, yes, but that's football. That's football. “I said before the game: it's about creating memories. As they go on in their life, life's all about memories, right? And wherever they go in the game, you shouldn't forget these memories. “The boys showed maturity as well, and again, in order to see games out like this, you've got to

have a bit of character, and the mentality was right. The boys, all of them, put themselves on the line and managed to get across the line as well, so it was massive. “As a coach, you look back and you look at individuals, and you just want to see that mentality. Have you got that mentality? And they did.” The U21s side have lifted two trophies in front of the academy

Selhurst faithful since reaching the upper echelons of youth football, after winning the Premier League 2 Division 2 playoffs back in 2020/21. Becoming only the second English side to ever lift the Premier League International Cup after its inception back in 2014/15 is a monumental achievement, one that will indeed live long in the memory of these players and fans alike

Crystal Palace celebrated the 2023/24 season in style at Fairfield Halls earlier this month, with End of Season Awards presented to men’s, women’s and Academy players and Jean-Philippe Mateta, Elise Hughes and Ebere Eze among the winners…

Just under 24 hours after Oliver Glasner’s Men’s team thumped Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park; a week after Palace Women’s historic Championship title triumph and promotion; and the week before a second successive Premier League International Cup final for the Under-21s, there was much to celebrate across the club. Another sizeable crowd of supporters attended Croydon’s Fairfield Halls for an evening of celebration of the 2023/24 season’s achievements.

For the men’s team, it was Mateta who came away with an awards double, winning not only Player of the Season, voted for by supporters, but also sharing the Players’ Player of the Season award with Joachim Andersen, after the squad’s own poll ended in a split vote. "It means a lot, I’m very happy – and thank you for this award!” Mateta said succinctly, with Andersen adding: “I think it’s been a season with a lot of ups and downs, and now we’ve found a good way. “We’ve been playing really well since the manager came in and everyone has bought into it. The future looks bright – hopefully we can continue like this." Eze, meanwhile, took the 23/24 Goal of the Season crown for his team goal at Liverpool, with his calm finish in the 14 minute capping a slick 21-pass team move. "I thought Michael [Olise] would win it!" Eze laughed, collecting the award from Clinton Morrison. "[As a team] we were confident, we were free. For me awards

it's easy to score that goal – the build-up was important.” For the Women’s team, freescoring Elise Hughes picked up the prize for cinch Women’s Player of the Season, with Shanade Hopcroft winning the accolades of her peers by being voted Women's Players’ Player of the Season.

Head coach Laura Kaminski presented Hughes with her trophy, saying: "She's one of the most outstanding players this season, and she’s put her body on the line for this club."

Hughes smiled: "I've really settled this year and I think the backing I've had from the staff and my teammates was everything I needed – I couldn't believe it until they believed in me. "I score a lot of tap-ins – so I couldn't do it without them! We lifted the main trophy which is actually all what matters." Other accolades handed included Under-18s Player of the Season, which went to England youth international Jesse Derry – who has scored a remarkable 16 goals across 22 appearances in all competitions this season

– and Under-21s Player of the Season, awarded to captain and inspirational goalkeeper, Joe Whitworth, whose heroics in the Premier League International Cup in particular saw him lift the trophy at Selhurst Park. Two PFA Community Champions Awards went to Aimee Everett and Chris Richards, whose off-the-pitch contributions were recognised as part of an award which celebrates those who have gone above and beyond for their club’s local communities.

Both Everett and Richards helped Palace for Life Foundation to launch their limited edition fourth shirt during a Rainbow Laces LGBTQ+ workshop in early December, with Everett also appearing at the Foundation’s girls-only soccer schools and player Development Centres, and Richards participating in a Black History Month workshop at a school just yards away from Selhurst Park. Finally, there was the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution, awarded by Chairman Steve Parish to our legendary club captain, Joel Ward. Taking on the armband last summer, Ward is one of the club's most loyal servants and – with 360 matches to his name – our eighth-highest appearance-maker of all time. Ward made his 300th Premier League appearance for the club last month (against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium), having already eclipsed Wilfried Zaha’s record of 291 for Palace earlier this season. The Chairman said: "He’s such an incredible ambassador and an amazing human being, always so open and friendly. He’s played an astonishing number of games for us in different positions. 300 awards

games, mate – let's hope for 300 more, eh?!" After a video packed with tributes from former teammates and colleagues, Ward smiled: "That was fairly emotional! It's a huge honour. I want to say thank you to the Chairman and the guys who brought me in. "It's a huge honour to play for this club and with some of the players I have done, and am currently doing. It's a real pleasure to be a part of this club's history. "[I love] what runs through the club's veins: the community, the fans, the type of players who come through… it's a family."

History Makers Palace players past and tantalising titbits from eras gone by: club historian Ian King takes us through the wacky, weird and wonderful history of Crystal Palace one new tale at a time.

john burridge

ohn Burridge joined his hometown club Workington as an apprentice at just 16-years-old, making his first appearance in 1969 before moving to Blackpool two years later. His performances attracted attention, and a £75,000 transfer fee took him to Aston Villa in September 1975 where he helped the Villans win the League Cup. He made 80 first-team appearances, before heading to Southend United on loan in January 1978. Two months later, Crystal Palace manager Terry Venables brought the extroverted goalkeeper to Selhurst Park, where he kept a clean sheet on his debut in a Second Division fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion. Palace fans would make sure they were on the terraces long before kick-off to witness his pre-match

warm-up routines that included gymnastic movements, returning to the dressing room as mud-stained as if he had played a full game. He would also practise at home, with his wife throwing oranges at him… He exuded confidence, and was always vocal during the game which contributed to the outstanding

defensive record the following season, as the team lifted the Second Division title. He kept 21 clean sheets in 42 league games, conceding just 24 goals – it remains the club’s best defensive record and seems one that is unlikely to be broken. The next season in the top-flight began in fine fashion, hitting the top of the table by the end of September; ‘Budgie’, as he was nicknamed, sat atop the crossbar in a game against Ipswich Town. By the turn of the year, however, he had lost his place and only returned towards the end of the season. The summer of 1980 saw him embroiled in a contract dispute, seeing him demoted to the reserves, and when Venables left for QPR in October, Burridge soon followed him to Loftus Road. He left having made just over a century of appearances for the Eagles. Burridge featured for a number of league clubs, most notably Sheffield United, Southampton and Newcastle, and kept playing into his 40s – he turned out for Manchester City at the age of 43, making him the oldest player in the Premier League to this day. Since hanging up his gloves, he has been out in the Middle East and Asia, coaching and appearing as a television pundit.

DEBUTS AND CURTAIN CALLS John Pemberton made his debut for Palace against Aston Villa in April 1988, while forward Garry Thompson – having joined from Watford in March 1990 after Ian Wright had broken his leg – scored just four minutes into his debut against former club Villa. Bakary Sako also made a scoring debut against the Villans in August 2015, while Mark Bright was on the losing side at Villa Park in September 1992, making his final appearance for the club.

The club remained there until the reorganisation of 1958 when they were placed in the Third Division. history makers

champions Mansfield – a game they had to win to deny Palace a place in the Second Division. On the same Saturday afternoon, Palace reserves were facing Hereford’s second string. Some of the first-team players were taking part to ease the nerves, with around 4,000 fans attending. The Eagles were four goals up, when those that had radios turned on discovered the news that Wrexham had suffered defeat. Cue celebrations on the pitch and in the stand.

They met Palace eight times in the 1960s and 70s, with the Glaziers winning twice and the two sharing the points on five occasions. In 2008, the club was dissolved, owing £2 million mostly to the taxman, before being immediately reformed as FC Halifax Town. They ended this season in seventh place in the National League

hat’s on the menu in each club’s press room has always been a talking point amongst us greedy media pigs, but this season it became an even bigger topic with Luke (our young, opinionated social media hound) introducing the Away Food League Table. I shall now reveal who has provided posh nosh and who has fed us tosh during the ‘19/20 season – I wasn’t at every game so I’ve trawled through the department WhatsApp group for some notes. Propping up the food table and matching their league position are Norwich City. Maybe I was tired because it was New Year’s Day and a long drive, but it was an absolute shambles. It was hot dog and chips. There was no non-meat option for me so I had a roll with onions and chips. The chips were worse than the worst school canteen chips you could imagine and the beverage on offer was a jug of watery orange squash served in paper cups. It FROM THE ARCHIVE

was like a kid’s party at a leisure centre. Therefore Dom (our child-like camera operator who goes giddy for Captain America) absolutely loved it. Disappointing from Delia! Second bottom are Brighton. I usually enjoy what’s on offer there so I think they’re low down the table just because it’s Brighton. Some quotes from the team: “they had some disgusting off-brand baked beans” and “a great drinks selection.” Going up the table we see Sheffield United, Burnley and Watford. Sheffield United we’ll excuse because they’ve just returned, so probably had other concerns back then, but Burnley have been in the league long enough now to know a dry pie simply won’t do for people as cultured as the CPFC media team. At Watford we have to eat with Harry the Hornet around, which is not at all appetising.

West Ham are docked points for giving out food tokens, which prevents people from going up for seconds. Poor form! Plus you have to get a lift up to the seats (which are a marathon away from the pitch) and then according to Luke their plug sockets are “sub-standard.” Everton have jars of sweets and helpful staff so bravo to them. At Newcastle the staff are lovely, there are loads of options and it’s always something really hearty like a roast dinner or a stew. However, I’ve usually already stuffed my bloated little face in the train buffet car on the way up. The two Manchester clubs are good, City just edging their red neighbours because they have a beer fridge. However, FROM THE ARCHIVE

it’s underground so no phone signal to put photos of the spread on Instagram. Luke on the Saints: “Southampton were the surprise package of the season. You expect it from your Chelseas and your Arsenals and your Spurses but Southampton really punched above their weight. Well worthy of the Champions League spot.” That review also gives away the top three so well done to Chelsea for being deliciously terrific and terrifically delicious year after year. However, we didn’t get to all the grounds so the season is null and void. No weighted points per game here, just weight problems and a hunger for the return of press food in 2020/21!

An occasion like this calls for a hero, and one stepped up that afternoon. Just as Kevin Phillips had in 2013, Connor Wickham found the back of the net, heading home Damien Delaney’s flick-on after just six minutes. hile Palace have been making strides on the pitch, our community initiatives have been buzzing with activity off it, offering continuous support to south Londoners across various aspects of their lives – from mental and physical well-being to career development and mentorship. In August, we kicked off with the launch of our Girls Emerging Talent Centre, where young aspiring female footballers have been receiving top-notch coaching and guidance to fuel their footballing dreams. September brought some special guests to our Soccer Schools at Kent County Cricket Club, including Aimee Everett, Annabel Johnson, and Chloe Arthur, who took time out of their busy schedules and high-flying season to inspire and engage with our young participants. During the October international break, over 200 dedicated Palace supporters, alongside Foundation Patrons Andrew Johnson and Mark Bright, hit the pavement for our seventh

Marathon March, covering 26.2 miles and raising a whopping £102,000 for our community. December marked a milestone as we unveiled our first-ever limited edition fourth shirt in collaboration with the club and technical kit supplier, Macron. Academy to coach Premier League Kicks participants as part of the More Than A Game campaign. In March, we opened our doors to the local community for our third annual Iftar, where guests enjoyed special moments and delicious food together to break their fast. April brought an exciting opportunity for our young participants as both the men’s and women’s first teams visited the Academy, to get a glimpse into the daily work of our coaches, which was captured for Match of the Day. The season wrapped up with our Bike to Wolves event, as 33 brave riders pedalled from Selhurst Park to the Molineux, raising nearly £44,000 (and counting!) and celebrated their achievement by taking the three points home. Stuart Ryan Lifelong Palace fan and football artist Stuart Ryan has seen his artwork come to the attention of fans, players and managers alike.

or most of us, the COVID-19 lockdown was one of severe boredom. There was no football, no chance of venturing outside – we couldn’t even go to the pub. For Stuart Ryan, it was an opportunity to revisit a long-neglected passion. Although he had graduated from university with a degree in fine art in the late-1990s – including painting Attilio Lombardo’s celebration against Leeds United in 1998 and earning a shoutout on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday – a combination of work and family commitments meant he had set his palette and brushes down for the final time… or so he thought. That was until a prolonged furlough from his job during COVID forced him to reassess. The chance was there to start painting once again, but what to focus on? Well, why not Palace? His portraits of famous footballing faces began to catch the eye, and soon a retweet from Steve Parish and Wilfried Zaha brought his work to wider attention. “That’s unbelievable, mate,” came Wilf’s response – as a Palace fan, there can hardly be a better endorsement. stuart ryan

present for their homes, as well as producing and selling a number of private commissions to Palace fans who wanted a bespoke painting of their favourite player or moment captured on canvas.” Stuart has worked with the club, including creating a painting of Steve Coppell, which the former manager signed to be given away as a prize on the club’s golf day. He may also be familiar to visiting Aston Villa fans, having captured legendary Irish defender Paul McGrath. The former Villa and Manchester United star was delighted to be presented with the print, which he signed and auctioned off for charity. “I’ve had fantastic support from the club, the players and the fans over the last couple of years, which I’m extremely grateful for,” Stuart says. “As you can imagine, being able to combine my love for art and for Palace is a dream come true.”

Chris Wait, FAB’s Co-Chair said: “It’s still early days but we’re now meeting with senior club officials on a regular basis to discuss key topics that affect supporters such as ticketing, stadium plans and community issues to help inform the club’s decision-making process on a range of non-playing matters.
