Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2019/20
the manager Entering my 16th year with Crystal Palace Women, I am proud of the development the club has made and look forward to welcoming both existing and new fans to Hayes Lane.
L
ike many people in women’s football, I first became involved in a management capacity when my daughter joined the club at the age of nine. It didn’t take long until I was helping the manager of the Under-9s and when he moved on, I stepped in to run the team. Sixteen years later, things have escalated a long way from the local parks I used to coach the youngsters in and I am proud to have managed the first-team for the past six seasons. When my daughter was still a child, we used to watch Crystal Palace Ladies compete in the country’s third tier together. So, when I took over the first-team in the fifth tier several years later, I knew that we still had a long way to go. The club had just been relegated and many of the players had left, meaning the first job for me and my assistant, Richard, was to steady the ship, boost the squad and get the team running again. Two promotions later, the club had worked its way back to the third tier and we knew we had returned to the level we used to compete at. Now, in our second season as part of the second tier FA Women’s Championship, we can look back on a period which has seen a massive structural change throughout the club as a whole. The employment of physios, strength and conditioning coaches, sports science staff and
analysts have all been major changes and help from the main club and each of our volunteers have been key catalysts in seeing us achieve what we have so far. But that said, this league is tough. Every week, we face really technical, fantastic footballers and in order to compete, last summer saw us bring in nine new players. While everyone knows it takes time for so many additions to gel, we now believe we can challenge even the fulltime clubs in our league and beyond. This season, our target is to finish midtable; I think that would constitute sufficient progression. Last year was a good platform and we did well to finish 10th. As a result, we knew what the league was about this year and are progressing with the players we’ve signed. To earn further progression in front of an even larger fanbase would be amazing. So I must thank each and every one of you for supporting us so far and welcome everyone who is just beginning their journey with the club. I have stood on the terraces with Palace fans for 35 years and so know what we are about as loyal supporters. For the fans who come through the gate to support us, we endeavour to win each game for you. Thank you for supporting us.

Before the start of the 2019/20 season the club decided it was time to update our image to bring us in line with the Women’s Super League clubs and the vision of the women’s game going forward and its excting development. The changing landscape of the women’s game and the success of the World Cup, coupled with the team becoming embedded further with the parent club and its first-team, our identity became more unified. With the full support of Chairman Steve Parish and the board, it resulted in us going forward in the Women’s Championship as Crystal Palace Women F.C. - still south London and proud.

Mackenzie played for Chelsea for nine years, before moving to Reading, a club the defender represented for four years. A year with Tottenham Hotspur followed after the Royals before Mackenzie switched to her third London club with the Eagles securing her signature. Mackenzie was part of the side that defeated her former team Spurs in the cup last year, with Palace emerging victorious on penalties.

Having previously represented Millwall and Brighton and Hove Albion, Rutherford, who is comfortable in the centre of midfield or defence, joined the Eagles from fellow Championship side Lewes FC in the summer. Rutherford has a wealth of experience having represented various clubs in her 20-year career, which includes lifting the league title with her hometown club of Portsmouth - a side Rutherford represented for 11 years.

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2019/20
How to own the penalty area as a goalkeeper
I would say that comes from confidence. I’d advise younger players aspiring to be top goalkeepers to be confident to go and collect any ball in the penalty box. I can’t say it enough: have the confidence to go for any ball. Even if you do miss it, have the confidence to go again and collect the next ball that comes in. It’s part of the game. If you miss it, just get on with it - that’s what your defenders are there for, to pick you up. As a goalkeeper, it’s quite a mental position so you’re not going to get everything but as long as you have the confidence, that’s one step in the right direction. Finally, be loud so that your defenders know you’re coming out to claim anything around you.
I’ve just come from being a full-time footballer so it’s an interesting transition going from training every day to now training part-time. It is about having a balance and a schedule for each week. I think the biggest thing is to schedule in what food you’re going to be eating each week, which is quite an important part of a footballer’s lifestyle, and also when you’re going to rest. We all know that rest is one of the key tools to recovery. I think it’s important for the girls to have that schedule each

back on track to go again.
from America, women’s football is massive over there. There were plenty of options and there are plenty of options in England, too. There are school teams, I know a lot of players I play with started off in the boys’ team.
How to get into women’s football
Have the confidence to go and play with the boys, especially at school. And through the FA, they have a lot of women’s football training sessions and teams that are starting up so have a check in your local area through the FA website. Get into any women’s teams and sessions and go from there. Be confident with any decision and take a friend with you so you’ve got a familiar face with you. Be confident, show that you’re willing to make mistakes in order to learn because everyone makes mistakes. Stick with your decision. 13

the chairman I’d like to offer a warm welcome to every supporter returning to Crystal Palace and particularly to those watching Palace Women for the first time.
A
s Chairman of Palace Women, I have seen the club grow in many different dimensions. My first involvement came as a parent in 2008 when my 11-yearold daughter was seeking a girls’ team to join. Being a Palace fan through and through, I noticed an advert in the matchday programme advertising trials at Palace Ladies, as we were then known. My daughter loved playing with Palace and so began a 10-year period travelling over 100 miles from south Kent to Bromley and back twice a week. Shortly after I started as a parent at Palace, the chair of the club stepped down and, with my experience as chair of Smeeth and Brabourne F.C., I volunteered to help behind the scenes. After a year as Vice Chairman, I eventually became Chairman and, 10 years later, I am proud to still be here. We’ve gone from playing nearly every game - whatever the age group - on a ripped-up, muddy field at the end of a Sunday when all the men had finished, to playing at Bromley or Selhurst Park in front of crowds nearing a thousand people. The first-team were playing a local side from Orpington when I took on the chairmanship and this season we’ve played Chelsea, who play in the Champions League. It’s a huge contrast and a fine testament to the work everyone at the club has put in over many years.
I must add a note here for the dozens - if not hundreds - of volunteers who have built Palace Women to where we are now. The club is almost entirely volunteer-run and we would be unable to operate without the many hands keeping us going on a day-to-day basis. The work everyone puts in is reflected in our amazing fanbase, which is so much larger now than it ever has been. You will spot me on most matchdays, facing away from the pitch and photographing the terraces. There’s still work to do, but seeing a stadium like Bromley’s populated by Palace fans is incredible. I feel immense pride. I’m a Palace fan and I really believe in my football club and I love my football club. So to be a part of the growth of something that is making our football club proud is incredible on a personal level. I hope you enjoy watching Palace Women and to see you all around at matches throughout the season. Women’s football has a unique, personal appeal, so please use this book to collect players’ autographs and enjoy speaking with them postmatch as they enjoy speaking with you. By coming to our football matches, you’re not just coming to 90 minutes of play, you are coming to an event and you are as big a part of that event as the players. Thank you for supporting us.
