We are facing a truly challenging return to Premier League football this afternoon as I find myself in one of the most astounding and taxing periods I have ever faced in my career as a manager. To have 11 first-team players injured at the final whistle following our game with Derby County was simply astonishing. In terms of sheer numbers, I’ve never known an injury situation like this before. In such circumstances, simply ‘getting by’ would be a commendable achievement but, discounting our exit from the FA Cup last Sunday, the Crystal Palace squad have succeeded remarkably well. From our last eight fixtures, we have lost just once – collecting 13 points in the process. Over much of this time we have been obliged to field players out of position or for a frequency of matches they were probably not ready to play. But the players have been a credit to themselves and have alleviated some of the strain I and my fellow

coaches are under by performing so well regardless of the position in which they have been asked to play. Now we are into January, it is time to support the team where needed and continue our efforts this season as a galvanised, reinforced group. Everyone at the club is certainly behind that intention. Before turning my attention to today’s opposition, I must first comment on our match with Derby County. Defeat brings with it great disappointment in any competition and the squad, staff and I were frustrated not to progress further in the FA Cup. The FA Cup is a fine tournament and it is one the team and I were fully committed to. However, we must remember that the Premier League is our primary concern and the FA Cup game fell at a time when our team options were severely limited. Our positive Premier League record faces a tough hurdle today, with Arsenal making their first visit

to Selhurst Park under new manager, Mikel Arteta. I look forward to the challenge of facing his team and hope that we can repeat the performance earlier this season when we earned a deserved 2-2 draw at the Emirates. Today’s match will be as difficult, if not harder, as again we will be forced to field a team hit by injury, though I hope having nearly a full week to prepare will see the squad in better shape to play than in previous matches. This afternoon is the first time since early December that we’ve had at least five days separating games and it is the beginning of the fixture schedule returning to normal. I am hopeful that the fitness and size of our squad will be continually improving and the competition for places in the team will again return to normal. Until then, your support means more than ever to us and we will be relying on you today to give the team that added boost. Enjoy the game.

We put forward a squad that gave us a good chance of going through against Derby County. They had one chance and they scored with that one opportunity. I felt we controlled the game against them until I was sent-off and in football it is hard to overturn a situation when a man down. The game on Sunday kicked off one-minute late as part of the FA’s Heads Up campaign. And I think we need more campaigns like this, where we can help people with mental health problems. It is a great campaign but I think there still needs to be more done because this league is the most popular in the world and millions of people are watching. Gary Cahill returned against Derby and that was hugely important in our current injury

crisis. Nothing that he has achieved in his career happened by accident, he deserved it all. Against West Ham, at their home, Gary stepped in as captain due to the fact I was unavailable, and if the manager chooses to do that again today against Arsenal then Gary will bring stability and leadership. He is a great person and a top professional. I will still be with the team today, like I always am if I’m not playing, supporting from the stands. We have a good record against Arsenal since I have arrived and the team are feeling confident about our chances today. Make some noise!

I don’t want to focus on my sending-off. I am disappointed. It hurts to not be able to help my team for three Premier League matches now.

Our focus returns to the Premier League today, after last weekend’s cup exit. It has been a challenging few weeks for the team with various players sustaining injuries, so a return to a more normal schedule is welcome to say the least. All teams have suffered to some extent, but it’s fair to say we have probably suffered more than most. Hopefully we will have one or two back next week and we can also bring in some new faces to help. It was heart-warming to see a video from the Palace TV team earlier in the week, where Vicente met a young lad called Daniel, whose mother tragically passed away last year. Vicente gave the young lad his gloves and, better still, had a kickabout with

Daniel and also his own kids after the Boxing Day game. A small gesture - but a brilliant one – that I’m sure Daniel will remember for the rest of his life. I urge you all to tune in to Palace TV on Thursday at 7pm or indeed travel to Wolves’ home ground Molineux to support our Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup. Their win against Reading at the Madejski last month was an absolute joy to watch, and I wish Paddy and all the players involved the best of luck. The interview’s scheduled with Jaïro Riedewald in Player Liason Officer Danny Young’s office for 9:55am. Upon arrival, Riedewald is already there waiting whilst Danny finishes up a meeting and instantly fills what could’ve been an awkward silence: “Hey, how was your new year?” Prompt and polite. These two traits of Riedewald’s are evident within a few seconds of meeting. The small talk continues whilst we wait for Danny’s office to become available and Riedewald reveals he waited up until 11pm in the team’s hotel in Norwich on New Year’s Eve to phone his family back in the Netherlands as they saw in a new decade one-hour ahead of England. It then became clear that the office we had hoped to use was not going to become available anytime soon. The suggestion of doing our interview in the canteen is one Riedewald is reluctant to do, charming in his bashfulness at not wanting to have our chat in front of his fellow teammates. Stumped with a location, we nervously put forward to Riedewald about doing our interview, well, right where we stand: the busy corridor at the Training Ground where you’re never more than a few seconds from a coach, member of the media or kitchen staff scuttling by. “Sure,” Riedewald laughs as he glances round at our

surroundings: a washing machine whirring in the background, a picture of Roy Hodgson on the wall and a man squeezing past us to deliver cleaning products. Riedewald reflects on his recent resurgence with 296 Premier League minutes under his belt so far this campaign having received no league minutes in the 2018/19 season. He begins: “I wouldn’t say

But the gaffer told me he likes to have me around the team. I always kept my head down and

continued to give everything for this club on the training pitch. “The last few weeks I have played some minutes and I am very happy that the opportunity has come. I know I’ve been filling in [at left-back for Patrick van Aanholt]. It isn’t my favourite position for the team but everyone supports me well, with [James] McArthur coming across and Wilf [Zaha]. Everyone supports me to perform the best I can in this position because it is not my preferred one.” Riedewald’s recent opportunities have arisen due to a chronic injury list building-up for Hodgson. After Derby County, Hodgson revealed he had never known an injury situation like it with 11 players potentially unavailable for today’s game against Arsenal, which might include Riedewald after leaving the Rams’ game early due to injury. Football is all about circumstance – just ask Aaron Wan-Bissaka – and several Development players have been handed first-team opportunities in the midst of the first-team thinning out. The impact of Brandon Pierrick against Norwich City and performance against Derby caught the eye and continued Palace’s famed Academy reputation. As a graduate from the world-famous Ajax Academy, Riedewald explains why the de Godenzonen have such

a rich history of world-class talents emerging from their youth teams. “It’s a long process. It’s not in one season. It is helped by very good former players, even someone like Johan Cruyff and Dennis Bergkamp, coming back to Ajax and bringing their opinions and vision about football and spreading their wisdom throughout the teams. “From an earlier age you’re doing boxes of possession and everyone throughout the Academy knows what to do when you get a shot at the first-team because their system is no different to what you’ve been doing in the last five, six or even 10 years maybe.” Coming through such a setup as a centre-midfielder, it is understandable if Riedewald doesn’t feel at ‘home’ on the left-hand side of the defence. However, his performances have betrayed his opinion: creative, assured and a reliable attacking outlet. But if the 23-year-old was to choose his favourite position, then it’s that defensive shield in front of the backline. Riedewald offered an insight into his role during his time at Ajax, and reveals a common misconception is that Frank de Boer played him at centre-back. He clarified: “My dream position is in the midfield. Everyone says I was a centre-back at Ajax and on paper I was but in reality I played more in

front of the defence because we played one-on-one at the back. “I was always in the position to be able to go left or go right. I was in a ‘sandwich’ between the midfield and the defence. I like to have the ability to move across that line: to the left side or to the right to keep the ball going and moving quickly.” De Boer’s use of Riedewald was one of the main reasons the then-Ajax player opted to link up with his former manager again in south London. He revealed: “I was in a tough situation at Ajax as I wasn’t playing. They told me I can leave if I wanted to. They were happy for me to stay but in my mind I wanted to go. “I had the No.4 shirt and then when I came in after the summer I had No.36. They didn’t say anything and those small things get you thinking about what to do and the whole season in general was a tough situation. “You have to start thinking about ‘What do you want to do with your career?’ and ‘Where do you want your career to go?’ but also you have a manager [Peter Bosz] who hasn’t played you in almost a year and it breaks something in your mentality: ‘Why am I not playing?’ “That was the main reason I chose Frank de Boer at Palace; he convinced me to come as he had big plans. He told me about other

Dutch players that were coming in, my friend Timothy Fosu-Mensah joined and Ruben Loftus-Cheek came in as well. “And even Frank’s assistant manager, Orlando Trustfull, helped me out a lot in the Academy at Ajax as well.” When Riedewald lists all the motives behind leaving behind Amsterdam for Croydon, it’s hard not to sympathise with what the situation must’ve been like for Riedewald when De Boer was released by Palace just a handful of games into the 2017/18 season. But that is football and Riedewald has no regrets: “For me, I thought it was the right option and I don’t regret it because when I came here I saw what kind of club it was: the fans are amazing, it’s a nice stadium and the atmosphere is great. It’s a warm club and I want to repay my price to the fans. “I live in south east London. I am happy here. When I drive to the club I am always arriving with a smile, I am happy to be here. I am not angry at this club. I enjoy London, it’s a big city. I still haven’t seen everything. But I think it when I drive and I am looking out the window I see so many events or restaurants and things I’d love to do. It’s a little bit similar to where I am from, Amsterdam, but it is just 10 times bigger!” Arriving as a 19-year-old, Riedewald’s decision to keep

his head down, remain focussed and committed to Palace in any capacity he was required is admirable. It is optimised by his decision to stop returning home to the Netherlands, he reveals: “I used to go home a lot in my first year. But after that I thought it was better to stay here more, get my own house and learn the language more.” The next revelation from Riedewald is one that we struggled to comprehend: “I never had English lessons. I just picked up the language watching Netflix and movies. I have an older brother and he used to watch a lot of American and black-comedy movies and I started learning from there. “Game of Thrones helped a lot.” Talk then strays to the TV show itself and you can sense Wilfried Zaha and Riedewald have spent more than a few hours on the long away journeys discussing the HBO show: “The last season they were hyping it up and they just lost it. Wilf loves it as well, we talk about it. It’s more of a lifestyle because you get so involved in the families.” The final season of Game of Thrones was adapted from the novels: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. For Riedewald, the dreams of spring are very much here, and requests for a loan deal are now confined to yesteryear’s wintry winds.

Well here we are again: another transfer window. I think I banged on about how a transfer is not official until the club announces it and that we always announce as soon as the paperwork is finalised in my first column this season, so I won’t do that again. But if you’re a fan of a particular ilk, feel free to read it again before you tweet this month! I enjoy the January window more than the summer one because it’s so short. So many more baseless rumours squeezed in to 31 days. Lovely stuff. Also, it’s an 11pm deadline. I understand why they moved the summer one to 5pm, as it’s so close to the first game of the season. But there’s something brilliant about seeing colleagues turn into monsters when they’re still airbrushing creases out of photos and choosing naff music tracks at 2am.

The Mamadou Sakho loan in 2017 broke the record for the latest finish. We got the twohour extension at 11pm and the paperwork was submitted at 1am. Which was when I interviewed him and photography was done. Once everything had been finished we left the office at 4am with tired eyes and a belly full of takeaway pizza.

That was also an interesting one because it was a matchday. The team were playing at Bournemouth that night. Fortunately, they were victorious, which took the edge off the pain of Luka Milivojevic’s agent releasing photos of him in the Palace shirt before the deal was complete! A common issue but it’s so hard stopping them taking photos on

their phone as you don’t want to rock the boat before signatures have dried on the contract. In the same window we got to do one of my favourite types of transfer interview, an ‘on the road’ one. Jeffrey Schlupp was having a medical at a swanky clinic on Harley Street, so we sped there in the ‘mediamobile’ (a competitively-priced app-based taxi) to capture the interview and photographs. We chatted to him in front of some greenery, which seemed nice at the time but ended up looking like he was on the set of Little Shop of Horrors. There’s also a great behind the scenes shot that shows the work experience boy (what a week he had!) and social media manager holding up our travelling ad board.

Another memorable transfer interview was Alex McCarthy. We met him in Soho, but just when we were about to do the interview and photos the fire alarm went off. It continued to go off for over an hour, meaning we couldn’t get anything done. Terry Byfield kindly got him a sandwich and banana from Greggs to apologise for the delay, but in the end we all had to dash off to Heathrow for our flight to Cape Town for pre-season. A blessing in disguise really as the interview ended up happening with the beautiful Table Mountain in the background! There was also plenty of panic when a picture of him getting off the team coach being posted on our Twitter account before he’d officially signed. Sorry for

bringing this up again if you’re reading, Sam Jordan… Honourable mentions also go to an iconic shot of Diego Cavalieri doing the Christ the Redeemer pose in front of the Holmesdale with me out of shot on my knees pulling his shirt to get rid of creases and the time I was sat in a chair waiting for a new signing to come in to do his interview but instead saw a shot of him on Sky Sports News leaving the building, never to return.

Mesut Özil has gone from being barely used – or even making the matchday squad – under Unai Emery to being a key figure for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. The early signs indicate that the attacking-midfielder is still capable of moments that saw him almost break the Premier League assist record in 2015/16 – falling one short of equalling Thierry Henry’s total of 20. The former Real Madrid midfielder has started to find joy again in the space on the inside right, in between the midfield and defence – a position that causes issues between the left-back and left-sided centre-back over who exactly should pick Özil up. REJUVENATED LUCAS TORREIRA A rejuvenated team with a clear plan has been the theme of Arsenal under Mikel Arteta and, alongside Özil, no player has appeared to benefit from the arrival of Manchester City’s former assistant manager more than Torreira. A mainstay to begin with at Arsenal, Torreira eventually lost his place under Emery, and then found his role altered when he was utilised. Rather than being a shield for the

HISTORY Having spent most of the first 60 years of our existence playing clubs in the south, our first league game against Manchester City was in April 1965 after their relegation from the First Division and our promotion to the Second Division. That was a 2-0 win to the Palace. We also won in Manchester 1-0 in our first season in the old First Division (1969/1970). Maine Road was a stadium where we enjoyed a bit of success over the years although we did lose our final game there in March 2002. Things got worse for us when they moved to the City of Manchester [now the Etihad] Stadium. It was was originally built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games and City moved in during the summer of 2003. Our first appearance there was during our one-year return to

the Premier League in the 2004/05 season. That was a 3-1 defeat and we subsequently lost on our next six visits there. Things went from bad to worse in 2017 when we lost 5-0 twice! MEMORABLE MATCHES Well, this is an easy choice for a change. With little optimism from the travelling fans after the heavy defeats of recent years, Palace produced an incredible result in December 2018 when we won 3-2, which included an absolute banger from Andros Townsend. This was our first away win at City for 28 years. It was made more special as they went on to take the title winning every single home game, except this one. Credit too to Jeffrey Schlupp for an excellent solo goal just before the Andros ‘worldie’ and another cool penalty from Luka.

TRAVEL The M40 or M1 are your motorway choices before joining the M6. I’d take the toll road north of Birmingham to avoid the usual hold-ups around Walsall. Flights to Manchester are available but I don’t know why anyone bothers when the trains from Euston are quick and frequent. There are three an hour to Manchester Piccadilly and they do the 200-mile journey in just over two hours. This will be our first trip on the Avanti West Coast service following the departure of Virgin Trains. PUBS AND BEER Manchester is always a great day - or weekend - out for lovers of real ales and craft beers. There are now an amazing 75 micro-breweries in and around the city.

A few of my favourites are Cloudwater, Marble, Blackjack and Phoenix. Cloudwater have their own modern-style craft beer bar in Piccadilly trading estate, not far from the station. If you don’t fancy a pub crawl the easy option is the Piccadilly Tap which is just outside the station. They usually feature a dozen or so cask conditioned ales and the same amount on keg - you’re bound to find a few that you’ve never tried before in this modern bar. Then it’s a short tram journey from the station to the stadium. For the more adventurous beer tourists, I’d recommend The Marble Arch Inn which is a 15-minute walk from the station and then a half-hour walk to the ground. This is the home of the award-winning Marble Brewery whose most popular beer is simply called ‘Pint’. In the city centre the Port Street Ale House always has a great choice on offer with at least seven cask beers from independent breweries. There’s also the Smithfield Market Tavern for Blackjack beers, Peveril of the Peak - a classic old boozer - and plenty more. A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS There are many players who have played for both clubs but the biggest name to be linked to both City and Palace is the late, great Malcolm

Allison. He was a huge hero in Manchester, where he coached from 1965 to 1973 before moving to Selhurst Park in March 1973. Despite his arrival, we lost five of our last seven games and were relegated from the old First Division. Allison remains our most flamboyant manager ever; he had a huge personality and was a popular pundit on TV. Fans loved him despite the fact that we were relegated to the Third Division and he then went on and changed our colours, our nickname and dumped our goalkeeping hero John Jackson. Jim Cannon is quoted as saying: “Malcolm Allison put Palace on the map. No other man could single-handedly take a club from the First Division to the Third Division and still become an instant hero.” Under the fedora-wearing Big Mal, the 1975/76 season was very exciting with the club enjoying a fantastic run to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. We lost to the eventual winners, Southampton. FAMOUS FANS Unlike the long list of celebrity Manchester United fans from all over the world, those who support City tend to be Mancunians. These include the Gallagher brothers, Ricky Hatton, Johnny Marr, Andrew Flintoff and Jason Manford.

Faron Paul flexes the tendons in his neck: “Watch this,” he says. On the right side, his throat stretches in the visceral, unnerving but perfectly natural way you’ve tried in the mirror. On the other, a lopsided mesh of sinew and muscle, straining to carry out the basic task, is revealed. It’s incomplete; and the reason why is anything but natural. When he was just 19, Faron was stabbed nine times whilst defending his sister from an unprovoked attack. Three years later, he was stabbed again. Again, nine times. Again, defending a loved one. After the two incidents, Faron had felt the steel of a knife penetrate his skin and cleave through his flesh a total of 18 times. One of these violations came through his neck, severing four nerves and causing a lopsided mesh of sinew and muscle to strain as Faron flexes over a coffee at Crystal Palace’s training ground. Watching as his father

demonstrates the merciless damage caused by assault is Chance, Faron’s 11-year-old son. Explaining the long-term damage he still suffers 14-years after being stabbed so violently, Faron describes the feeling you experience after waking from a dream in which you are rich, successful or living a life that by day feels beyond your reach: the sinking disappointment as reality washes in with sunlight. For Faron, that disappointment comes as he wakes and realises that, in reality, he can’t swim anymore. It was just a dream: his shattered nerves won’t rotate his arms. “It’s not only that,” he continues, “after I got stabbed, my mum wasn’t the same person; it broke her. My brothers were angry, my dad was angry, I was sad. I didn’t want to live. This all happened before him [Chance, Faron’s son, being born]. Imagine what would have happened if

I’d committed suicide, my son would not exist right now. “What kind of Daddy am I?” Faron then turns to Chance, pushing his forefinger playfully into his chin. “A good Daddy,” comes the beaming response; a child’s pride in their father causing him to sit up to attention. “He’s never been in trouble at school,” Faron says. “We haven’t even tested what it’s like when he’s in trouble yet. He’s going to secondary school after this holiday. It’s a transition. It’s where his future friends will come from, a lot of them. “How are kids experiencing death and so much pain before they’ve even experienced love and happiness? It’s just crazy, man.” And so, having started to post online vlogs discouraging young Londoners from carrying knives, Faron is now taking a more physical stand. “I came up with the idea to take knives off children in

exchange for vouchers. I thought to myself: ‘it’s not kitchen knives they’ve got, it’s designer knives and if it’s designer knives, they clearly paid for it. So maybe if I can give them back half of what they paid for the knives, they can hand it in to me.’ I’ve taken over 200 knives off the street, easily. “I take a knife off a child and then I get a message from their mum saying: ‘ever since you spoke to my son, you’ve transformed him. I can’t thank you enough.’ That’s the kind of thing that fuels my drive.” Just in the space of a few months, Faron has already taken his campaign several steps further: opening a youth market in Hackney that teaches young adults the skills of business and value of earning legitimate money with pride. He’s also opening a bike park to provide a safe, protected and productive place to go for young adults who may otherwise have nowhere to turn. All in all, following his own trauma, Faron is changing Londoners’ lives. “What I’d say to a young person is,” he finished a morning educating Palace’s Academy footballers by saying: “‘Life is too short to be making silly decisions. The first thing to do is if you’ve got a passion of anything in the world, grab it with all you can and ask the people around you to help a bit. Because time’s not going to wait for you.”

Geoff Thomas remembers feeling vaguely ridiculous. It all stemmed from an incident in the much-anticipated rematch with Liverpool at Selhurst Park in mid-January, 1990, when Steve Coppell’s side had set about instigating some kind of revenge four months on from their humiliating nine-goal drubbing at Anfield. Crystal Palace gave everything that afternoon, heaving to pierce the league leaders and spying a few cracks in their defence of set-plays in the process, but there was simply no way through - there was little chance of keeping them out, either. Peter Beardsley, with a fine burst to the touchline and centre into the six-yard box, had set up Ian Rush for an early opener. The England midfielder would spring upfield from Palace’s frantic pressure after the interval to fizz a shot which scuttled unfortunately under Nigel Martyn, and the hosts were beaten again. They would depart having seen a goal disallowed, struck the post from distance through the young substitute John Salako, and lost Eddie McGoldrick and leading scorer Ian Wright to serious injury. Yet Thomas’ mind drifts back to an incident in the second-half, during that

furious - if fruitless - barrage whipped up by the home side: “I remember nutmegging Steve McMahon, and calling it as I did so,” he said. “God knows what I was thinking. He told me in no uncertain terms that I’d better show more respect to people on the field, and I ended up feeling pretty silly. At least we only lost 2-0 that day, rather than nine, so that was progress.” Things looked bleak that January 30 years ago. The productive period the previous month, when wins at Manchester United and Charlton had been followed up by a point at home to Chelsea on Boxing Day – the visitors scored in the first and last minutes – and an impressive win over Norwich City, courtesy of Wright’s 11th of the season. Yet, although lower league opposition, Portsmouth and Huddersfield would be dismissed in the FA Cup, there was nothing to cheer in the league from the turn of the year. Arsenal had exploited chaos in Palace’s backline to score four times in the first-half at Highbury, with too many of the goals of the visitors’ own making. Poor Jeff Hopkins would present Alan Smith with the opener to cast the

floodgates wide. Lee Dixon, Tony Adams and Smith, again, helped themselves. All five of the game’s goals came in a frenetic 20-minute period before the interval to ensure the hosts recovered after successive league losses of their own. There was more defensive solidity at Coventry in the next league fixture, only for a simple goal kick from Steve Ogrizovic to sail over back-tracking centre-halves for David Speedie, racing unchecked through the middle, to volley home four minutes from time. The loss to Liverpool would be followed by a fourth consecutive defeat, a depleted team dismissed 3-1 at Nottingham Forest. “But, even with that run of defeats, the progress we were making in the cup kept morale reasonably high,” said John Pemberton. “We never lost that winning feeling entirely. And we were learning, too. I remember in that Liverpool game we all noticed that they just couldn’t defend set-pieces. I remember looking at Alan Hansen and Bruce Grobbelaar, and they were arguing virtually the whole time over who was going to clear it. They didn’t know what to do.” That knowledge would be distinctly useful at a later date.

The number of people using foodbanks in the UK has drastically risen over the past decade, with one in 50 homes using emergency food aid in the past year. In London alone, more than 166,000 food parcels were provided to those in need. In a bid to help more south London families prepare low-cost and nutritious meals at home, Palace for Life Foundation is running free cooking classes for families and children throughout January. The group classes will educate attendees on how to use ingredients that are commonly available in foodbank parcels and everyone who attends will receive a slow cooker to help them replicate the meals at home. Palace for Life Foundation’s Health and Wellbeing Manager Beth Towle explained: “Through our Healthy Eagles programme we know that many families and young people in south London either don’t

have access to regular, healthy meals or are lacking the knowhow to utilise certain ingredients that they receive through foodbanks. “We’re determined to take positive steps to help tackle this and will be running our cooking classes throughout January, aiming to provide not just food, but also education and advice in a safe, welcoming and fun environment.” In addition, Palace for Life’s ‘Cook Like a Pro’ junior cooking classes will be running for eight to 16-year-olds. Children will learn simple recipes to try at home and also how to build a healthy and balanced diet and reduce sugar intake. Anna, aged 10, who attended last year learnt many new cooking skills and also improved her reading as she became confident in reading recipe books. She said: “Cooking is now my favourite hobby. It makes

Brandon Aveiro sits below wallmounted plans for Crystal Palace’s proposed Academy redevelopment. He’s recently returned from a training camp with the Portugal national team and seen his friend and teammate of nearly 10 years play senior football in the Premier League. After spending his life with the Palace Academy from the age of eight onwards, Aveiro recently received international acclaim with call-ups to train alongside international peers. With a Portuguese mother and owning a Portuguese passport, Aveiro earned the experiences at both Under-18 and Under-19 level as Seleção das Quinas prepare for the 2020 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. “It’s a different experience,” Aveiro explains, delaying his lunch after training this week. “They play a different style, it’s more 4-3-3 and I play in the No.8 role. It’s a lot different out there with the language and the culture. It’s enjoyable, it lets me come back here and express what I’ve done out there.” Off the pitch, the language barrier is one hurdle the teenage Aveiro has to overcome. As a born and raised south Londoner, he’s well embedded in the Portuguese community but speaks English day-today. Since receiving the international nod, that’s had to change. “I don’t speak Portuguese that well,” he says. “I understand everything but speaking is a bit difficult. I never learnt when I was

younger because I was so busy playing football, so I never went to Portuguese school. Now I’m learning, I’ve taken time out to go to a Portuguese tutor. It’s difficult and it feels weird because I’m older - it’s weird someone teaching me something, my own language.” The language aside, Aveiro is committed to a footballing future that involves Portugal. With his Portuguese mother and Madeiran father, there’s plenty of support from home, too. “It would mean the world, playing for my country. For my mum, coming from south London which has a big Portuguese community, me coming from here and representing them would be unreal. [When I got the call-up] she was over the moon, telling everyone. collection of friends who’ve known the forward for almost a decade. “You see Brandon making his debut and he’s a close, close friend of mine,” Aveiro says. “I was at the game against Derby. You’re watching it and it brings a tear to your eye. It’s amazing to see someone you’ve grown up with - I’ve known him since Under-10s. TQ [Addy] was there. It was emotional and motivating. You want to be in that environment, you want to be with him and be playing with the first-team. “A couple of the lads went to school together. I only knew BP from training together but we were always close friends. Me, him, TQ and Malachi [Boateng], we’ve been together every day. Even on the way home and chilling until bedtime. “We’ve got a little group chat, me him and T, and there’s obviously the CPFC group chat. We just congratulated him. It’s a proud feeling, he’s like a brother and I want to do the same thing. We’ve all got our goals and aspirations and that’s what we’re leaning towards. He’s the first one to do it.” Part of an ever-progressing Academy, international training programmes and with the inspiration of good friends enjoying professional football, Aveiro may well be next.

AWAITING HIS CHANCE Towards the end of July, Wright first appeared in Palace colours in a pre-season friendly at Kingstonian where his goal secured a 1-0 victory and the next day was included with the first-team squad in a behind closed doors match against Luton Town. Wright followed that up a few

days later with a goal in a 5-2 reserve team victory over Tooting & Mitcham. The forward then gave fans an exciting glimpse of his capabilities when he came off the bench in first-team friendlies at Selhurst Park against Coventry City, Chelsea and West Ham. Wright started the 1985/86 season playing for the reserves and scored in the games against Queens Park Rangers and Fulham. This saw him handed his first taste of the Football League when he was an unused substitute in Palace’s 1-0 home victory over Sunderland on August 24th. DEBUT IN FRONT OF 6,000 The striker’s opportunity came a week later against Huddersfield Town in SE25. Palace were unbeaten in their first four league and cup games but this encounter ended in disappointment for everybody including the majority of the 6,026 crowd. The Terriers pummelled the Eagles’ defence from kick-off and took an early lead. However, Phil Barber then provided two headed goals as the Eagles fought back to be ahead midway through the first-half. It was a similar story after the break with Huddersfield netting an equaliser after 55 minutes but Palace piled on the pressure with Andy Gray

coming close, however Town scored from a direct free-kick 25 yards out. That was the sign for Coppell to throw on the raw talent of Ian Wright as he replaced David Lindsay but it was too late to salvage a point from the game. FIRST START AND THEN A GOAL The following Tuesday evening Wright was handed his first start in the League Cup second leg tie against tenants Charlton Athletic, replacing Trevor Aylott. Wright then returned to the bench for the next few games but those present for the home match against Oldham Athletic witnessed the impact that he could make. Trailing 2-1 with 20 minutes left he replaced Aylott as Palace pushed forward and with the clock ticking down spirits were raised when Kevin Taylor equalised. Just 60 seconds remained when Alan Irvine sent in a cross and, outjumping Oldham’s defence, Wright headed home for the winning goal. That initial season for Wright saw him utilised mainly as a substitute but as the season drew to a close Wright started the final 10 games and netted five times in the process. A sign of things to come.

LIFE BEFORE PALACE Ian Wright was first noticed as a teenager – playing for Millwall on schoolboy forms at the time - by former Palace coach George Petchey who was then-Lions’ manager but he was not taken on as first-teamer. In the autumn of 1983 Wright once again met up with Petchey – who was now at Brighton & Hove Albion – after being recommended to the Seagulls boss, and Petchey handed Wright a six-week trial. Despite playing two reserve games and scoring once the Sussex club opted against signing the striker. Disillusioned by this outcome Wright reverted to playing non-league football and started the 1985/86 pre-season with Dulwich Hamlet. However, it was here that Wright was spotted by Palace scout Peter Prentice and invited to Selhurst Park and awarded with a three-month contract.

I haven’t been surprised by Brandon Pierrick’s impact. And I don’t say that with any arrogance but it’s because I see him day in, day out and he demonstrates all the time he has the capabilities to play on a first-team platform. He has an incredible attribute which is his pace and power and that’s obviously stood out to Roy when watching the U23s. Don’t get me wrong, there is still so much between Brandon and saying he’s a bona fide first-team player but it’s a superb reward over the Christmas period. I was recently asked if Brandon will find it difficult returning to the Under-23s after getting a taste of the first-team. Let’s not forget just before Christmas he was back in the Under-18s helping out in a FA Youth Cup clash against Reading. Brandon has a very good mentality and is extremely

grounded. But overall I think it is a collective task to keep him that way, starting from the manager down to the coaches in the firstteam and Academy. We all have a role in developing our players. On the whole, it is exciting and we want the experience he has had to be his driving force. It has been a good couple of months for our group with Brandon Aveiro receiving an international callup to the Portugal Under-19s squad. To be recognised for your country at any level is huge so it was a great boost for him to go away for a few days on a training camp. But the hard work continues for Brandon. He has come back after seeing what it is like in a different atmosphere and environment. It’s keeping levelheaded and being open-minded to what we are teaching here. Brandon is one of many players we have high hopes for.

We had our first game of 2020 on Monday afternoon against Queens Park Rangers. Having seven Development players involved in the Derby County preparations on Sunday meant not having them available for the Monday. However, this gave us a great chance to bring through several of our Under-18s. We found ourselves 2-0 down at half-time against a strong team who were playing four players from their FA Cup game at the weekend. They caused us problems in that first 45 but we quickly put that right at half-time and I thought the second-half performance was fully deserving of the point at the end of the 3-3 draw. You have to look at the big picture and in the last three or four months we’ve played a lot of young players and that’s exactly what the club want as we look to develop talent.

When you look back at the busy period the senior team have had and to see so many Under-23s in and around the squad it has been fantastic for them individually and collectively as a group.

I’ve been out since 8th September and I’ve now finally received my date for surgery which isn’t until 10th March. However, despite that being a couple of months away, it is nice to have it confirmed as it gives me a focus. A long-term injury is frustrating enough but having to wait for the surgery adds to those frustrations because once I have the operation it will be between six to nine months before I’m back out there with the team. If I was at the rehabilitation stage already then I’d find it easier because you can set yourself goals in terms of walking, running, lifting weights but for now it is a waiting game. Fortunately, at the age of 31, I am relieved to say this is my first long-term injury. And the biggest struggle for me has been having no one to blame. This was just a freak incident that occurred when I sent in a cross against Lewes. In a weird

way, I’d have rather been clattered by an opponent. Despite my injury, I’ve been keeping myself busy in regards to being around the team – Dean has been great in keeping me involved. I still attend games to support my teammates, and my role as vicecaptain is one I take seriously and enjoy. Although I’m not out there on the pitch I still find I am able to take an active role. It’s been quite an eye-opener for me watching from the sidelines for such a sustained period of time; you see the game completely differently. I would say it has given me a greater appreciation of all my teammates because I am able to get a vantage point of the whole pitch – I’m a No.9 so naturally most of my time is spent in the final-third and therefore I usually have a limited view. My injury has actually opened up a couple of other doors for me and I recently did co-commentary with Mark

Bright for our Women’s Weekend game against London City Lionesses. What a great experience that was. Mark was lovely and passionate about the game and the squad. Since Mark last covered a game we’ve had quite a large squad overhaul so I enjoyed discussing the exciting changes around the squad with him and bringing him up to speed with the new players that have joined. In particular, new players Annabel Johnson, Amy Goddard and Ashleigh Goddard have been fantastic for us. But also important players for us from last season in the likes of Andria Georgiou have continued to impress. We are massively improved on last season and I am gutted to not be a part of it. Last season we struggled to create opportunities and my role as the No.9 was to be the first line of defence. However, this campaign we are creating plenty of chances and I am itching to get back out there and get on the end of them.

Dean Davenport and the club have been fantastic during my injury lay-off. The situation is different in the women’s game but Palace and the manager have done everything within their capabilities to help me.
