The last time I wrote in this page, I focused on the particularly challenging run of fixtures we faced between games against Manchester City and Liverpool. I also commented that the challenge we endured over those five matches would not end against Burnley and, indeed, going forward until the end of the season. Although we may have collected fewer points against five formidable opponents than we would have desired I could not have asked for any better commitment than we showed in those games and I feel that, on other days, perhaps I would be reflecting on a better reward for the players’ efforts. Due to the time constraints and deadlines needed for this programme, I cannot, at the time of writing, discuss our game with Burnley on Saturday. However, what I saw against Liverpool gave me ample confidence for the match. We were desperately unlucky not to get at least a point from the European champions and we all left the

ground very disappointed. Against Burnley, I have faith in the squad to display the abilities we have all seen they are capable of and I hope that you are reading this after an enjoyable result over the weekend. The peculiar situation of having to pen my notes without being aware of a result that will be history by the time you read this provides a reminder of the unique period we are entering. December brings with it a thick and fast schedule which places a great demand on the squad and wider club. From tonight until facing Norwich City on New Year’s Day, we will compete in seven matches over 30 days. The resilience of the squad and support of its fanbase will be significant factors in our success in the coming month, but I have seen over more than two years at the club that we are well stocked in both departments. Turning my attention to this evening’s event, we welcome a dangerous adversary to Selhurst

Park tonight. Bournemouth, much like Crystal Palace, have been well organised and defensively tight this season, but I will fondly remember our most recent encounter with them; a 5-3 victory on the final day of last season. That result ended our 2018/19 campaign on a high but we must not let it cloud our perception of the fixture now we are five months further on. What Eddie Howe and the club have done is a remarkable feat and I hold both in high regard. Away from on-field matters, last Wednesday, I attended the Crystal Palace Supporters’ Trust AGM. It is imperative that the club is represented at such events and I was pleased to have heard the views and opinions of its members. I would like to thank the Trust for their invitation and hope that they were satisfied with the evening’s event. And now, returning to our match with Bournemouth, we look forward to kicking-off the Christmas schedule in front of you all tonight. Enjoy the game.

The Liverpool result hurt. We did not deserve to lose. We perhaps maybe deserved to say we should have won all three points. The performance that day, against the team in the top spot of the Premier League, was our best this season and one of the best in my time in south London. It may have been our day if Tomkins’ header was not ruled out. But I saw the manager say it was right of VAR to deny us taking the lead, so we cannot complain about that decision. Our reply to Sadio Mané’s opener was a good one. We fought, we attacked and were not scared of their talents. Before Wilf scored we had plenty of chances and that goal was excellent with Wilf starting it, Christian’s role and then Andros’ assist. Andros, man! He was so good against Liverpool and I am delighted for him after speaking

honestly about the start to the season that he - but not just him, the team - had at the beginning. We lost Joel in the Liverpool game, and I am sad for him because he was so happy he did not suffer an injury in the Chelsea match before when he also had to come off early. Joel has been playing consistently well this season and we will miss him. I was told that the Liverpool match was my 100th appearance in the Premier League for Palace. That has gone quick! It is something I am proud of, I always dreamed of playing in England and the best league, so to have done that with this club, in front of you, our passionate fans, makes it more special and I hope for many more moments. For now, I cannot speak about the Burnley game as deadlines for the media boys meant I had to speak for my captain’s notes

before the game away at Turf Moor. I’ll talk about that game, and hopefully a good result, in my next time with you against Brighton in a couple of weeks. Tonight, in front of our fans at Selhurst, Bournemouth will play us in a game I expect to be different from the craziness of the 5-3 that we played in to finish our season back in May. We are close in the league table and must look at games like this as important ones in achieving our goals for the season. It will not be an easy task though, as we are returning from the long trip back from Turf Moor just three days ago, to face a fast, creative and good passing opponent. But we also have those skills too and I am confident this will be a positive start to the busy weeks we have ahead. Make some noise!

December is my favourite period as a footballer. There are so many games and moments with our fans in a quick period of time. It is tough though and we have to manage each game and training period with care.

I am writing these notes before Burnley, so I’ll begin with my thoughts from Liverpool. It’s always an exciting occasion and the fixture where we have the most demand for tickets. There have been so many memorable games between the sides and I think this is in no small part because the Liverpool team, like us, play the game in the right spirit. I hardly remember a foul and as a consequence it was a fantastic game. Prior to the game Mark Bright made a tour with some guests who were representing a cancer charity. Jürgen Klopp not only gave his time to speak to them and have photographs, but also introduced them to a few Liverpool players. It was less than an hour to kick off. Many of you will also have seen Roy’s visit to coach the Foundation’s Down’s Syndrome team, and a particularly heartwarming moment when one of kids jumped up and gave Roy a hug. Magical moments for those involved from two fantastic men -

it’s no coincidence that both teams play the way they do. On the pitch I thought we were immensely unfortunate not to come away with at least a point. I was so pleased to see the team go toe-to-toe with the league leaders, rather than sitting back. It was great for Wilf to get his first goal of the season – it was richly deserved. Conceding so soon after getting back in the game was a sickening blow, but it was a brilliant performance and should give us all heart going into a hugely important period of the season. Tonight’s match marks the first of seven in a mammoth four-week period, with all of our opposition currently occupying the bottom half of the table. With games every few days, there is bound to be chances for those players who haven’t had as many minutes as they’d hoped for so far. It’ll be up to them to grasp their chance to impress Roy. Mamadou played a significant part of an Under-23s win last week, as he continues his comeback to

full fitness after a few false starts. It will be brilliant to have him back in red and blue, when the time is right. I must mention Brandon Pierrick’s fantastic hat-trick in that big win over Millwall too. Hopefully that win can kick-start their season. December is always a hugely busy time off the field too, with players due to attend several community events as we look to give back to those around us. They will visit schools, hospitals and other good causes. Once again, we will open our Selhurst Park doors to local rough sleepers if the temperatures drop below freezing. Tonight, we are proud to shine a light on the Rainbow Laces campaign – which promotes inclusivity in football, and embracing the LGBT community. This is everyone’s game and everyone is welcome here at Crystal Palace. Make yourselves heard for Roy’s team tonight, and enjoy the game. Up the Palace.

Don’t tell Wayne Hennessey that international football is losing its appeal due to the ever-growing popularity of the Premier League, with the No.1 for Wales quick to remind anyone about the Welsh clean sheet and appearance records he is fast approaching. There’s no air of arrogance or showmanship in these reminders, though. They are merely the actions similar to an excitable kid on Christmas Eve. Hennessey is a proud Welshman who is close to achieving everything the young lad who idolised Neville Southall growing up ever dreamed of. “Neville is my hero,” he says. “I looked at him and thought: ‘Oh my god; I want to be Neville Southall.’ I think he was one of the best at that time. Obviously you had the likes of Peter Schmeichel but I thought he was the best in the Premier League.” Never meet your heroes, they say. But as many of the Junior Eagles will tell you about their experiences with players at Selhurst Park and out in the community, that couldn’t be further from the truth. And the same goes for when Hennessey, unintentionally reverting back to the innocence of his youth, discusses the times he has met Southall.

“I’ve met him a couple of times but we didn’t really discuss the records, more just football in general and he spoke a lot about his Everton days. I got his autobiography, and from a goalkeeping point of view it is very good. I can read it and see different things and understand where he is coming from.”

“ I JUST WANT TO KEEP PLAYING, AS NO ONE HAS EVER MADE IT TO 100 CAPS FOR WALES, SO TO GET THERE WOULD BE INCREDIBLE ” The autobiography was published seven years ago, when Hennessey was an established name in football during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. And it’s endearing that, such is the ‘keeper’s enthusiasm about his footballing hero, you can imagine 25-year-old Hennessey going through with a highlighter and underlining words of advice from his boyhood icon.

Southall’s record number of clean sheets for Wales – 34, which Hennessey equalled in a 2-0 win over Hungary in mid-November - will surely fall to the Eagles’ goalkeeper sooner rather than later. But that’s not the only landmark Hennessey is excitably chasing, with his 89 caps seeing him currently sit seven behind Wales’ all-time record appearance holder in Chris Gunter; a player who is 18 months Hennessey’s junior and still very much part of the Wales setup. “He [Gunter] is always like: ‘You’re on my heels!’ but he’s a great guy, who hasn’t been playing at the moment, so it’s a difficult situation. For me though, I just want to keep playing, as no one has ever made it to 100 caps for Wales, so to get there would be incredible.” Hennessey reveals that he gets all of his caps framed, including a special glass box for his 50th cap which is gold. With plenty of games, moments and saves to choose from, it’s hard to pinpoint the cap: “I had a few good ones in that Euros campaign: the Belgium one, the Russia one where we battered them and the Northern Ireland one too that was a good atmosphere. To be fair, whenever I put that shirt on and I’m out there singing my anthem.” With the Hungary win, Hennessey’s clean sheet heroics became all the more significant and they guided Wales to qualify for the forthcoming Euro 2020

tournament. Ryan Giggs following in Chris Coleman’s footsteps and taking Wales to their second major competition in four years is an achievement that shouldn’t be downplayed, and Hennessey detailed exactly what the former Manchester United winger has implemented. “Ryan has brought through a lot of youth, so there’s a balance of experience and youth. There’s a good mixture of us whereas teams tend to have more of one or the other. These players have been with us for a long time, the four or five youngsters we’ve actually known for a long time, which means we’ve all gelled so quickly. It’s not even just the players, it’s the staff, too. It’s such a good group.” Now, off the back of the viral dressing room celebration videos post-Hungary that saw the Welsh squad jubilantly dancing whilst chanting Hennessey’s name, it is clear to the rest of us outside of the Wales national team setup what a tight group it is. Social media was awash with: ‘Find you someone who looks at you the way Bale looks at Hennessey’ and, laughing about the video, the shot stopper runs through the relationship. “Me and Gareth are always together on the coach. Any spare time we are together. We room on our own but we room next door to each other. We’ve always been close. “I played against him when I was at Wolves and I always wind

him up, as we had a one-on-one and he’s slotted it past the post but I always say I saved it. Apart from that I’ve never really played against him. In training though he’s an absolute delight; what a player!” In the tight-knit groups and training ground methods Hennessey

“ ME AND GARETH ARE ALWAYS TOGETHER ON THE COACH. ANY SPARE TIME WE ARE TOGETHER. WE ROOM ON OUR OWN BUT WE ROOM NEXT DOOR TO EACH OTHER. WE’VE ALWAYS BEEN CLOSE ” sees similarities between Giggs and Palace’s Roy Hodgson, before adding: “But where Ryan is new to it, the gaffer has so much experience. Both are fantastic though.” But of course there will be differences - international and club

football couldn’t be further apart in terms of their setups: “It’s a big difference,” Hennessey continues. “We have a lot of meetings [at international level]. “In the daily planner you could have a meeting in the morning, then breakfast, then training, then a meeting again, then lunch, then some free time and then a ‘unit’ meeting – for example, defenders have a discussion, or all the attackers will meet up. “Sometimes it’s two games in seven or eight days so there’s a lot of ‘homework’ to do. Especially if it’s someone unfamiliar. Against Belgium, for example, we know what [Christian] Benteke can do, [Kevin] De Bruyne can do. But for Azerbaijan, where you don’t really know them that much, you have to watch a lot, you have to be ‘fed’ so much in that short space of time.” Hennessey is a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, clearly showcasing several wide-ranging emotions when discussing various topics during this interview. We’ve had pride, passion, excitement and now, amusingly, we’ve got something akin to panic, but not in its truest sense. The reflections on Giggs and Hodgson provoke an outburst of: “I could never be a manager, I couldn’t handle all the stress!” But that doesn’t mean Hennessey isn’t looking to remain in the game: “I’d love to do my coaching badges – the plan was to

do them at the end of the season but obviously now with the Euros qualification, I’m not too sure. I think Wales were excited when I said that and are keen for me to get involved.” Despite being a proud international footballer of Wales,

Having left his birthplace of Bangor at the age of nine when Manchester City spotted his potential, it is understandable that although Hennessey carries a clear fondness for Wales, it’s not the place he believes he’ll return to

when the playing days eventually come to an end. After spending seven years with the Citizens between the age of nine and 16, the current Premier League champions wanted to push Hennessey onto the first-team but, as the 32-yearold reveals, the situation at Maine Road wasn’t one that appealed: “Man City offered me a one-year deal but I’m basically never going to play because Kasper [Schmeichel] was always going to play and I’d just be on the bench. And then Wolves came knocking on the door and I got a three-year scholarship with them and I moved into digs.” The move proved to be a decision that has laid the foundations for Hennessey’s life further down the line, when the time comes for him to hang up his gloves: “I spent 10 years at Wolves, and my missus is from Wolverhampton so we still go back. I’ve loads of friends up there – past and present footballers. My main one is Carl Ikeme, and then there’s Michael Oakes, Matt Murray… something of a goalkeepers’ union!” Then it returns again. That childlike love with football: “Whenever I go to visit, I have to drive past Molineux. I always see that as home. I’ll probably move back there once my playing days are over.” That appears to be a long way off though, with the Welsh shot stopper’s sights firmly set on writing his name into Wales’ national record books

What do you want for Christmas? Three points. What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received? Some football boots/a football/a PS3. What are you doing on Christmas Day? Training, but it’s just part of being a footballer. Right, that’s our Christmas content with the players sorted already. Let’s all have December off. What? There’s an actionpacked month full of deliciously festive content opportunities and I have to write about it? OK then, here we go. December is a crazy month. This is my sixth festive period at the club and there’s more planned than ever. It started off yesterday with the Under-23s playing in the Premier League Cup at the same time as Roy Hodgson’s press

conference. Two days in and already a scheduling conflict! Then obviously tonight’s game. Later in the week things get silly when we have a week’s worth of activity on the same day. There is a Business Club lunch at Selhurst

just before a press conference at the training ground. Following on from the underground success of last year’s ‘Selhurst Sweep’, we then dart to the club shop to play ‘Not Bullseye’ with some first-team players.

A quick dash next door to Speroni’s sees us capturing the best moments from the Crystal Palace Supporters' Children’s Charity Christmas party. This is always a great occasion, attended by the first-team squad and staff as well as charity patron Bill Nighy. After that we sprint upstairs to chat to Ian Holloway ahead of his Sporting Dinner. Whilst all of this is going on, Mark Bright is signing copies of his fantastic book at our new club shop in the Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley. Brighty, we’re a bit overworked, please could you film and present this one yourself? Many bests. There will certainly be hospital visits by the players that are

always heartwarming. Even the patients who aren’t Palace fans are delighted to meet the team and be given presents. Plus, I’m sure we’ll be helping out at the local foodbank we visited earlier this year. I have to say, though, as busy as December is, it’s a great month to work for a football club. Not only do you get to experience the connection between the club and the community, but there are loads of games, too. The manager seems to always be doing press conferences as there has to be one before and after every game. However, over the Christmas/ New Year week the Premier League allow you to hold the press conference for the next game after

the post-match press conference of the previous game. So, Roy will do a couple of post-post-matchpre-match press conferences. With Christmas snacks on offer from Press Officer Harriet, it’ll take the journos a month to get the mince pie crumbs out of their laptops.

It is one of only nine fixtures to be played more than 70 times with none of those fixtures featuring in the cup. In terms of the managers, this will be the fifth time Roy Hodgson and Eddie Howe have met in the Premier League, with both currently sitting on a total of five points. Following the excitement of the eight-goal thriller on the final day of last season, the Selhurst Park faithful will be expecting goals again with the last five meetings producing a total of 21. Surprisingly, if the goals are to come tonight, it may well be worth the Cherries keeping an eye on Palace’s defenders, with Scott Dann having netted four goals in

Furthermore, Patrick van Aanholt has bagged three goals in the Premier League against the Cherries, netting in each of his last two top-flight games against them. Two of those goals have come at Selhurst Park, including one in this fixture last season. With Palace having the home advantage, Hodgson’s side will be feeling confident, especially considering that the Eagles have suffered just one defeat in their last six Premier League meetings with Bournemouth. In fact, on home soil Palace have lost just two of their 12 league meetings with the Cherries.

AVOID PHILIP BILLING The summer signing is one of Eddie Howe's regulars, with the manager using Billing in a relatively untouched spine consisting of Aaron Ramsdale, Steve Cook, Nathan Aké, Billing and Callum Wilson. Billing is the trusted man in the middle of the park with Howe continually tinkering with the personnel who support

the Danish U21 international with Lewis Cook and Jefferson Lerma in alongside him. The defensive midfielder already has five yellow cards in the league, the joint-most with Lerma, as well as committing the second-most fouls (16). Furthermore, the former Huddersfield midfielder has blocked the most passes for the Cherries and is second for shots blocked. Billing has made the third-most clearances behind the expected leaders of centre-back pairing

The sixth round is the furthest the Cherries have ever got in the FA Cup. You have to go all the way back to the 1956/57 campaign to find the last time the club made it that far - a clash that ended in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

The number of years it took for Bournemouth to rise from League Two to the Premier League. After being promoted as runners up in League Two in 2009/10, the club finished second in League One three seasons later, and then just two years after that, finished first in the Championship to rise to the Premier League.

The number of points Bournemouth started the 2008/09 campaign with when the Football League hit the club with a huge points penalty for not following insolvency rules. HISTORY We’ve not played Newcastle United many times. Our first ever league game at St James’ Park was not until October 1964. This was a Second Division (now the Championship) game as we’d been promoted to the Third Division at the end of the 1963/1964 season after finishing runners-up to Coventry City. We lost that one and the Magpies went on to win the league that year. We met again in the First Division in 1970 and we played out a 0-0 draw, but the following October we did win our first game there. Since then we’ve won there twice more – in 1998 (Attilio Lombardo and Matt Jansen for us, Alan Shearer for them) and, of course, in April 2019 when Luka’s penalty was the only goal of the game.

MEMORABLE MATCHES With only these three victories away at Newcastle, there have not been many memorable games for Palace fans on Tyneside. One game that I remember well was an FA Cup Third Round tie that took place on a chilly Saturday in January 1988. A young lad called Paul Gascoigne played for them and scored a screamer from about 35 yards out that flew into the top corner. He went on to be voted PFA Young Player of the Year and became probably the world’s most discussed Geordie. TRAVEL It’s a long way! By far our furthest away game of the season, but we can’t complain as, apart from Burnley, we’ve not been out of London since August. Despite the distance, I always find the train journey passes quite

quickly and the two hours 50 minutes that it takes on LNER is far less than the time it takes to drive there. All London to Edinburgh trains stop at Newcastle so the service is pretty frequent. One of the best things about Newcastle away is that the stadium is in the centre of town and only a 10-minute walk from the station. The worst thing about Newcastle away is that they have always managed to get away with sticking the away fans in the top of the upper tier of the Sir John Hall stand. Not recommended for those with vertigo. PUBS AND BEER As many Palace fans will know, Newcastle has a great reputation for being a place to enjoy a night out. Many fans make a weekend of it and there’s no doubt that Friday

and Saturday nights in the Toon can be very lively indeed. The area has a great choice of micro-breweries (about 30 of them at the last count) and I can personally recommend Anarchy, Tyne Bank and Wylam. The longest established micro is Mordue – this was one of the first of the new wave of small independents when it started brewing in 1995. ‘Workie Ticket’ is their best-known beer. There are plenty of excellent free houses in which to drink the big choice of local beers. Bacchus has nine handpumps and Anarchy Blonde Star usually available, The Bridge Hotel (right next to Stephenson’s High Level Bridge) has an equally good choice, The Crown Posada is a lovely little pub and the Bodega usually has Oakham and Fyne beers and is, very conveniently, halfway between the station and the ground.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS One of my favourite Geordie footballers of recent times is Peter Ramage. Maybe not one of the greats, but a top bloke who was an extremely popular member of our 2013 promotion-winning squad. Others who have played for both clubs recently include Yohan Cabaye and Dwight Gayle. Our ‘star man’, Andros Townsend, left Newcastle to join Palace in 2016 shortly after scoring the goal that defeated us at St James’ Park in our penultimate away game of the season - a stunning free-kick from well outside the box. Cabaye missed a penalty 10 minutes after Townsend’s goal.

The typical approach to starting a piece filling inches in a football club’s programme doesn’t involve diving into high street economics. But it provides the opener here. A competitive marketplace comprising of businesses looking for greater profit than their neighbour drives diversity and choice in the products they sell. And for an independent coffee shop, south London is a thoroughly competitive marketplace. Naturally, then, Four Boroughs cafe in Crystal Palace offers a small but diverse and eyecatching selection of products as it vies to compete with other local cafes, diners and bars as well as the multinational chains that share their high street. But for founders Tom, Ed and Ben, making profit over rivals was the last thought behind creating a space selling highquality goods that benefit grower, seller and consumer alike. When the trio left their corporate, 9-5 jobs two years ago, their vision was instead to create a cafe that stands out for its niche

specialities designed not to be fastest off the shelf and into the bank, but to be known by the community as healthy and enjoyable alternatives all the while putting a smile on the faces of their proprietors. “From the outset, we’ve just done things that we’re passionate about,” explains Tom, one of Four Boroughs’ co-founders. “The thing that we say is: ‘you don’t want to do something you’re not going to enjoy it, so let’s not do it.’ We don’t do anything because we think it’s going to make us money, we’ll only do things that we’re passionate about. The big thing that we really want to get behind is a good, healthy, honest offering.” Tom talks perched by a window that overlooks Church Road - one side to the ‘triangle’ of shops at the centre of Crystal Palace. His cafe is minimalistic, both in terms of design and produce. A brief drinks menu is balanced on the wall behind the counter which boxes in the coffee and its barista, who serves a steady flow of customers as they sit chatting in an otherwise stripped-back, relaxed store.

But in spite of the minimalism which helps the cafe avoid the usual clutter and clangs of any place of refreshment, Four Boroughs provides its customers with products they may otherwise have never known existed. Kombucha and natural wine, as well as craft chocolate, mean visitors can treat themselves to something a little different to the norm. A group of keen cyclists, Tom, Ben and Ed are perfectly placed to keep their fingers on the pulse when it comes to the latest breakthroughs in superfoods and are all conscious of ensuring what’s on offer is both good for its consumer and profitable for its grower. But it’s not just about selling the perfect product, with Four Boroughs being established for its owners to break free from corporate tedium and invest their time into something enjoyable instead. Tom explains: “You’ve got to do your own thing and the way that we operate the place - in doing what we believe in - is our measure of success. Have we executed what we set out to

do? Are we enjoying it and are we providing a good product? “If we continue to do what we’re doing and offer healthy food and sell products that we believe in and we go out of business, fine. That’s a failure but I’d much rather do that than start selling food that we don’t believe in cheaper, sweet food with loads of ingredients added. The one thing we said from the start was that if we wanted to make money, we’d never have quit our jobs.” Over two years down the line from swapping ties for teas, Tom, Ben and Ed have formed a cafe which has found itself filling a gap in the local market and being well rewarded by regular visitors from the south London community, intrigued by new offerings and loyal in their subsequent enjoyment of them. While megastores and chain cafes throw ever-changing creations at their customers in a whirl of Arabica beans and masala chai, Four Boroughs proudly serves the people of south London with its own unique flavours. They don’t do it to greater their financial strength, but to provide a genuine product with genuine motives for those who genuinely care. They may be stuck in a competitive marketplace, but thankfully for the Crystal Palace community, cafes like Four Boroughs are thriving.

Andy Thorn arrived at Crystal Palace in December with the club at a low ebb. The assistant manager, Stan Ternent, had quit to take up the reins at Second Division Hull City. QPR had just strolled to a comfortable success at Selhurst Park, condemning their hosts to an eighth successive winless match. Even football’s first £1 million goalkeeper, Nigel Martyn, had failed to shore up the rear-guard. He had shipped eight goals and looked vulnerable in his first three outings. In that context there was a hint of relief in Coppell’s eye as he welcomed Thorn to Selhurst Park and posed for the club photographer. The 23-year-old had cost around £650,000 from Newcastle United. This was a homecoming of sorts. Thorn was born in Carshalton and had made his name at Wimbledon, where he had earned himself an apprenticeship by convincing Wally Downes, then a first-team player with clout, he needed guidance. Downes explained: “I took him on as my apprentice purely on a story told me by the youth team coach, Geoff Taylor, who was training the

During a break, Geoff happened to look over the training ground wall to see a healthy looking Thorny reading the Racing Post on a bus heading for Wimbledon dog track.” Thorn had gone on to establish himself as a key member of the Crazy Gang who had thrived in the elite, scoring the club’s first goal at that level and helping to claim the 1988 FA Cup at Liverpool’s expense. “We were very streetwise,” recalled Thorn of the team that had sprinted through the divisions under Dave Bassett and Bobby Gould. “Not necessarily very good technical players – though we had some good players – but we knew how to win matches. We knew when to kill the game and when to speed it up.” Some of the crown jewels had been sold off in the aftermath of the Wembley showpiece, with Dennis Wise leaving for Chelsea, and Dave Beasant and Thorn heading to Tyneside. “I became one of the country’s first £1 million defenders, and Newcastle’s captain. All this from a kid from an estate in Colliers Wood, who had initially been rejected

by the club he had supported and then counted himself lucky to sign on for £108-a-month on a Youth Opportunities Scheme.” Thorn was still earning only £110-a-week when he played in that FA Cup final. That spell at St James’ Park had been difficult, and he had welcomed the chance to return to south London. Coppell, who had been playing Geoff Thomas at centre-back with injuries eating into his options, had hoped the new signing’s top level experience might bolster the back-line, and ease the pressure on his goalkeeper. It was the centre-half’s ability to read a game that set him apart. He had a sense of anticipation that was innate, an awareness of where the cross or cut-back would drop. Ally that with his eagerness to snap into some bone-crunching tackles and suddenly the defence did not seem quite so much of a pushover. Thorn essentially fitted right in from the outset. And he needed to. His debut would be against Manchester United at Old Trafford, where Palace had not won since 1970. It looked a daunting opener.

This week the Rainbow Laces campaign takes centre stage, with clubs and communities coming together to show their support for LGBT people in sport. Emma Wright is one of the founding members of Proud and Palace, the official LGBT fan group for the Eagles, and she talked to us about Palace, pride and progress. Palace is in Emma’s DNA and it was love at first sight, she begins: “My first game was a boring 0-0 draw against QPR, but it was one of the best games I’ve seen. Selhurst Park is the most amazing stadium in the world when you’re eight-years-old.” Making people feel welcome has been a focus for Season Ticket holder Emma since the early days of Proud and Palace. The group started as a Twitter page in 2014 but has grown to over 300 members, providing a support network and social group for LGBT fans.

“We’ve always said we can’t necessarily change the world but we might be able to change things in our corner of south London. We’re trying to educate people why some of the language around the stands is not acceptable in football anymore. “I’m also hugely conscious that we need to support our transgender community. We’ve had members who stopped coming to games 30 years ago because they didn’t feel safe, but through our group they now feel more comfortable coming back.” Emma’s work doesn’t stop at Proud and Palace and she has been volunteering as a PlayMaker with Palace for Life, visiting schools to talk about bullying and resilience. “Anyone who has gone to school in the UK knows that calling someone ‘gay’ is a standard derogatory term for trying to get under someone’s skin.

“If schools can do more like they have been with Palace for Life to bring in people who can share their experiences, hopefully more people will grow up happy and authentically who they are.” That kind of progress is something Emma wants to keep on the agenda all year around. “Rainbow Laces has been valuable over the years in raising issues that LGBT people face in sport on the national and international agenda, but the key thing is that this isn’t a one off. “Dougie [Freedman] came up to me and told me that the club was offering me a new deal,” Sam Woods remarks over a cuppa, trying to contain that boyhood Palace fan inside him, trying to nonchalantly act as if this fairy tale isn’t just a dream but is in fact real life. His life. Woods’ rise through the Academy to being on the periphery of the first-team squad is testament to the club’s famous south London setup and Woods’ attitude. And with the services of the centre-half now secured, Woods is excitedly looking at his next steps: “I’ve been here since I was 12,” he says, “there was never any question that I wouldn’t sign. “It was good to sign so I could give myself another year and decide whether I needed to maybe go out on loan. “It’s the next challenge for me, especially when I look at players like Jamie Vardy, Harry Maguire and Kane. They’ve all had spells out on loan.” If a few months away from Copers Cope is the next chapter for Woods, then the team that secure his services will be a lucky one, judging by the defender’s assured full debut for the firstteam in the Carabao Cup against Colchester United. The need to pinch himself returns, with Woods revealing there was no forewarning about his

inclusion in the starting XI for the game against The U’s: “I found out the day before in the team meeting when the coaching staff put up the team - that’s when the nerves really kicked in. But as soon as the game comes around those initial nerves are gone.” We question Woods on this footballer cliché: Do you really manage to block out the amazement at seeing your shirt hanging in the dressing room? The noise from the stands? Lining up alongside Martin Kelly and Scott Dann? But, he reveals, you do. You really do. “You do switch off and block out everything else when on the pitch. My dad came to the Colchester game and asked me what it was like playing in front of a big crowd but I was honest and told him that you don’t really notice it.” If Woods was maintaining a calm and focussed figure on the pitch, a proud and “buzzing” Dad in the stands was probably not when he saw his son, nine years and counting in the Palace setup, walking out in red and blue.

Reflecting back, Woods now allows himself the enjoyment he was containing in the moment on that night: “My best moment was walking out the tunnel, that was a special feeling.” There can’t be many better teams to breakthrough with as a youngster - especially in defence than Palace, given the experienced professionals in the squad. That is something Woods was grateful for during the Carabao Cup game: “Kells and Dannsy were talking me through the whole game and that was great because there were times where I didn’t know whether to push on or drop back.” Result aside, you’d be a foolish person to bet against this being the first of many proud and impressive moments in Woods’ footballing career, a moment that was capped off fittingly with a few words, post-match, from Roy Hodgson: “Roy said I played well and I should be proud of my performance, and that was really nice to hear. I thanked the gaffer for the opportunity and I wanted to repay him.”

THIS 90 MINUTES Following defeats in the first two fixtures, manager Cyril Spiers changed the lineup and

handed a debut to summer signing, Geoff Truett. Palace took the lead just after six minutes when George Cooper - in for the injured Barry Pierce - slotted home and from then on the Glaziers dominated but failed to increase their lead. However, 10 minutes in to the second-half Palace's pressure paid off, when a Peter Berry shot could only be parried by Cherries ‘keeper Tommy Godwin in to Cooper’s path. The third and final goal arrived when Johnny Byrne received the ball from Mike Deakin and coolly lobbed the ball over a stranded Godwin. PALACE’S 57/58 CAMPAIGN With the news that the clubs ending in the bottom half of the table would form part of the new Division Four, Palace started the season with high hopes of finishing above the line, even though it wasn’t going to be easy. Despite some notable victories over Portsmouth, Swindon Town and Walsall it became clear by the middle of March 1958, with 12 games left to play, that there had to be a drastic improvement. Manager Spiers decided that

his youth policy needed some experience and brought in Tony Collins, a winger from Watford, and former Scottish international, Johnny McNichol, from Chelsea. However, this was too late with the Eagles finishing two places below the cut-off line. THE SWISS TRIP The European Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was played over three seasons between 1955 and 1958 with a city - as opposed to a team - being entered. Having progressed to the semi-final, London were due to meet Lausanne in the Swiss city on 16th September 1957 and the representative team would be managed by Palace boss Cyril Spiers along with the club’s trainer, and former player, Jack Blackman. The squad included Palace players Peter Berry and Geoff Truett with Vic Rouse as the reserve goalkeeper, the remainder of the squad being made up of players from Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Leyton Orient. Despite losing this first-leg in Lausanne, London won the second-leg and later lost to Barcelona in the final.

HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE’S THIRD TIER In the summer of 1920 the Football League expanded and introduced a new Third Division that was formed almost totally of clubs from the Southern League Division One, which included Palace. One year later clubs from the Northern League were brought into the fold and formed a Third Division North with ‘South’ being added to the original third tier name. The idea of the creation of a new Fourth Division had been mooted since the early 1950s and the geographical separation would be abolished for the start of the 1958/59 season with the bottom halves of the North and South sections forming this new tier. It remained that way until the Premier League was formed in 1992 with the former Third Division being renamed the Football League Second Division and then from the 2004/05 season the present League One.

It takes time to settle in to whatever new environment you’re working at but returning here has been much easier because of my history with and knowledge about the football club. Much like when I came back to play for the second time, it has been nice to return in a different capacity. From what I’ve seen, the future is bright for the Palace Academy. From the foundations through the youth stages and all the way to our professional players, we have promising years ahead and this is supported by very good players throughout the Development setup. With the potential of the proposed development, the improvements that can be made across the board could be huge. Leading the Under-23s recently, I’ve tried to share my experiences of senior management with the team and I work closely with the coaches and Paddy to make key, collective decisions. In particular, Paddy and I

are trying to create more mixed, hybrid groups at the Under-18 and Under-23 levels. The close relationship between the two tiers is becoming closer and, in my opinion, this is very beneficial. We’ve also tweaked our training pattern so that, on different days, we’ve adapted the levels the lads are worked to. It’s taken time to get into the groove of that but we’re starting to see some good data. First and foremost, all this work culminates in the development of players, but results-wise it was a great boost to defeat Millwall 4-2 last Monday. The team and I have shared some big disappointments after conceding late goals recently so it was nice to be on the other side and enjoy a win instead. But beyond the three points, I took a lot of positives from the team’s performance and having Mamadou, Connor and Jairo join us from the first-team really helped our group. Their professionalism and quality

showed the lads where they’ve got to try to be and it was a great gauge of where the team are currently. Yesterday, we faced Middlesbrough in the Premier League Cup. I can’t comment on the outcome of the game because I have had to publish these notes in advance. However, we’ve developed a religious format to preparation and I’m looking for a strong performance where the lads put into practice what we try to teach them day in, day out. Typically, through my experience, northern teams pose a different type of problem where the players are very committed and honest in their performances regardless of how the game goes. With that in mind, we have to stand up and be counted on a physical level. Thankfully, we have those attributes within this team alongside some excellent individual talent. In both of those aspects, we’re looking forward to a good competition.

I’m delighted to have returned to the club for my third spell at Crystal Palace and, just over three months into the job, I’m incredibly excited about what the future holds for this Academy.

We’ve finished up a recent period where we played three games in eight days – London City Lionesses, Reading in the Conti Cup and then Blackburn Rovers – and having a packed schedule like that is draining. For periods like that it means there becomes a bigger focus on the mental side of the game. We know it’s more physically demanding but it’s important we have that mental edge to remain fully focussed and to keep on going. Facing Reading – a Women’s Super League side – and playing them at the Madejski Stadium in the Conti Cup was a fantastic experience for us. The game was played at an extremely high pace and of course the result was a difficult one to take. It’s tough losing 6-0, however after going in at half-time 4-0 down, changing to a more defensive formation and tightening up tactically to only concede two more, shows our hardworking characteristics as a team.

You can definitely find positives from a result like that. They’re a full-time team whereas we are parttime. This makes a difference going into a midweek game when you know you’re going to face players who have had the whole day to prepare, whereas most of us were working during the day. Blackburn Rovers was unfortunately another defeat, this time in the league. It was a game where the ball just wouldn’t go in the net for us - we had six really good chances to score. It was a frustrating one for the team and one where we perhaps focussed too much on the team we were going up against and needed to remember what we could do. Having started against Reading, and coming off the bench against Blackburn for the final 20 minutes, I now feel like I’m growing in confidence and building a reputation as a Championship player. Being on

the bench can be frustrating, but I understand I must be patient. With that being said, every time I’m called upon I tell myself I’m going to make an impact, and prove to the staff, players and fans why I should be in the XI and this keeps me motivated. Next up for us is another Conti Cup fixture and another Women’s Super League outfit in West Ham. I really look forward to playing the Hammers because I used to play for them when I was younger. Their home ground is quite local to where I live so I’ll have family and friends come out to support the team, which will be amazing to have that. It’s another chance for us to prove ourselves against the top-tier, like we did when we held our own against Chelsea. I urge all you fans to come out and support us throughout the season whenever you can. Come on you Eagles!

It was amazing to have the team at Palace TV visit me recently; I loved welcoming them into ‘my world’ and showing them what I do off the pitch. Having support like that from the club is incredible.
