e’s a super professional, a very hard-working player who always gives his absolute

best; he’s a very tough and solid defender,” Roy Hodgson summed up the reason behind Joel Ward’s longevity in south London perfectly ahead of the full-back’s milestone game against Everton last month. It is those traits that Ward himself saw in the club and those which attracted him to sign for the Eagles, despite having several options over eight years ago. “It was between a couple of clubs who were looking at me in that period,” he reveals, “but there were a multitude of factors that drew me to Palace. “Speaking to the Chairman, the manager at the time and, although I’ll probably get a bit of stick for mentioning it - but he will love me for saying it – Scotty Guyett (Palace’s Head of Sport Science and Strength & Conditioning), who I played with at Bournemouth. I spoke to him about the club before I came. “It felt like it was the perfect place for me to continue learning my trade, develop as a player and give myself a chance to be knocking on the door of the Premier League, as and when that happened.” That knock on the door, incredibly, came just one-day short of the first anniversary of Ward signing for the south Londoners. The now-30-year-old still has an element of disbelief in his voice when

he says: “I don’t think anyone really saw us getting promoted that season but what an incredible journey and season it was for us, in the way we did it.” That incredible journey has continued, with Palace now in their eighth consecutive top-flight campaign. For Ward, the reason behind the club’s ability to counteract its trend of being relegated after one season in the Premier League has been due to marginal gains and minor tweaks rather than radical measures. “The ethos and the culture have remained the same, in a sense of what we have built the success on - the foundations of that have remained. Although everything has changed in little ways, the fundamentals have always been there,” Ward reflects. “That’s the main thing. We’ve got one of the older stadiums, but one with a lot of culture and heart about the place. It’s not like you see the dramatic change of a new stadium like at Tottenham [Hotspur]. “It has been the little changes over time that have made the difference and given us the footprint to build upon as a team

and as players.” Those little changes also saw Ward’s near-34-month wait for his first Palace goal end on the 14th March, 2015, at home to Queens Park Rangers. “Yes, I do,” Ward laughs with knowing appreciation that all

defenders remember their goals. “Wilf [Zaha] did a little bit of trickery into the box and pulled it back to me; I took a touch on my left foot and found the back of the net, thankfully.” If the goal lives long in Ward’s memory, then his celebration lives long in the recollections of Palace fans. Cristiano Ronaldo came to south London. “I had a deal with my brotherin-law, who is also my best mate, on the celebration,” Ward laughs. “He said when – or if – you do score then you can’t not do that celebration. You do have to celebrate those milestones along the way but I am always focusing on what is ahead.” Any person at the top of their industry will attest to the fact that a strong mentality is as key to succeeding as is having the required skill set. For Ward, he doesn’t want to dwell specifically on the tougher moments he has encountered in the last eight years, but rather reflect on the bigger picture he takes when those difficult periods are thrust upon him.

Heavy defeats “I made a beeline for where they were and made it known I had heard them”

None of us expected to see Liverpool concede seven goals to Aston Villa and Manchester United six to Tottenham Hotspur, but anything is possible in football, especially in the Premier League. And that’s why shipping four against Chelsea before the international break isn’t cause for doom and gloom. Every football club and footballer will go through those results and moments. Mine came during my time at Birmingham City, when Barnsley hammered us 5-0 at home – and if that wasn’t bad enough, it was live on TV, too. I was injured for that game, suffering with a grade one calf strain. However, as I was a big signing and the club weren’t performing too well at the time, the manager, Lee Clark, asked me if I could go on the bench. Lee said to me that he wouldn’t use me, but as we were on TV he wanted to show that his new signings were available and to give the fans a boost. I understood that and was happy to take my place on the bench. However, 25 minutes in our left-back, David Murphy, ruptures his cruciate ligaments. The gaffer has turned round to me immediately and asked: ‘Can you go on?’ My initial reaction is to go: ‘I’m not playing left-back!’ but Lee’s plan was to move Jonathan Spector there and put me in midfield. I’m now looking at the physios and giving them the eyes to say: ‘Come on, chaps. Help me out, here.’ Nothing. I’ve gone on and throughout the

This is a programme created by the Premier League and the National Literacy Trust with its aim to help children increase engagement and progress levels in reading for Year 5 and 6. The sessions, known as Fixtures, give pupils the opportunity to practise their reading skills using football-related resources and texts. Sam Lovatt, Reading Lead at Culvers House, said: “Our children enjoy the football-focused lessons and learning with the reading coaches. We have noticed an increase in the children’s confidence in their own reading ability. We’d like to thank Palace for Life Foundation for their continued commitment to helping our children develop a love of reading.”

Brighton match preview Crystal Palace are looking to secure consecutive league victories against Brighton & Hove Albion for the first time since September, 2011, following the Eagles’ 1-0 victory at the Amex Stadium in February. If Palace are successful today, it will mean the Seagulls have lost three Premier League games in a row for the first time since November, 2019. Furthermore, if Roy Hodgson’s side secure the three points, it may well result in a goal-glut with Graham Potter’s side having shipped at least three goals in each of their six Premier League defeats since Project Restart.

However, the Seagulls’ man up top, Neal Maupay, has been directly involved in six goals in his last five PL games (four goals, two assists), including five in his last three. The hope is that Lamptey and/or March get caught in the Palace half when possession is lost, leaving Townsend, Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze to exploit the space in wide areas and drag central defenders wide. of a first-team player to help aid the transition across Copers Cope Road. Therefore, time off is in short supply for all of the club’s players and it’s time that’s undoubtedly treasured, especially with the festive period approaching - a spell that always takes its toll. For Scott Banks, that time was being spent with teammate Rob Street playing golf before catching up with the club’s media team for this interview. Banks downplays his golfing talents. But then he does the same with his footballing skill, too, so watch this space once he retires from football. The interview with Banks materialised at the behest of our fans, with our social media team asking the club’s Twitter followers which Academy talent they would like to hear from next, after summer signing Alfie Matthews’ chat in the Everton programme.

Our band is actually all about kindness and being nice to each other, it’s not like we’re being unpleasant – it’s the opposite life; it’s such an adventure.” Dante speaks of his admiration of Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha and Mamadou Sakho, but reserves his ultimate praise for manager Roy Hodgson: “How has he not received a knighthood?” he asks. These are exciting times for the band, having been approached by critically acclaimed music producer Youth, who offered his services on the upcoming album. “I thought it was a wind up. But it was true. He’s worked with Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Guns N’ Roses, and he’s going to write some songs for us, too. I said: ‘yeah – I suppose we can fit him in…’” Being a punk band in the 21st century offers a fairly precarious existence, though, as Butch explains: “It’s very easy to get banned by the BBC or national radio; I just got given a list of things we’re not allowed to talk about or say. So that’s not very punk is it? The freedoms that musicians enjoyed in the past are sadly not there for us. You have to find clever ways of working it into the songs without the producers noticing it, which is quite a fun game really. “Our band is actually all about kindness and being nice to each other, it’s not like we’re being unpleasant – it’s the opposite.” Dante dreams of playing to a packed Selhurst Park, but for the time being will gladly settle for Sunday Leaguer blasting out over the tannoy, where the track most definitely belongs.

The inspirational group came together as part of a special film produced by Palace for Life Foundation to be shown in local primary schools with the intention of encouraging children of all backgrounds to achieve their potential. Featuring in the film was one of Palace’s brightest young players, Eberechi Eze, who was born and raised in Southwark. Palace’s summer signing acknowledged that his childhood was not without challenges and empathised with other youngsters growing up in the capital: “When your parents don’t have that much money, it can be tough to get in the right places to get the right opportunities,” he said. “That’s something that’s difficult for loads of families in London, you can see there’s a lot of struggle and it’s difficult.” Having succeeded in the fiercely competitive world of football, the England Under-21 international credits his faith and the support of his family for helping him stay grounded. “Having a community around you, like at church, and having your family around you, it helps you to do what you feel is right, you don’t feel alone. “Because I’m a footballer, I’m grateful I can help people. That’s something I hold firmly, being humble, being respectful and having values.” While Eze said he has not experienced racism directly, he felt strongly that more work

Story of the season The Eagles recorded three landmark moments in three variants of the Virgin kit: promotion in 1989, the FA Cup final in 1990 and finishing third in ’91. To this day, the cup final stands out as the most memorable of that cherished trio – earning the ‘89/90 shirt a

Where are they now? Bukta still exists as a sports clothing brand, though it underwent a six-year hiatus between 1999-2005. A multi-million pound relaunch revived them in 2005, but the designers still haven’t returned to the fashionable heights of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Buyers’ guide: Such a famous shirt is one of the easier ones to find online. Just wade through the dozens of FA Cup final programmes for sale and you should be in luck. Steve Coppell’s decision to bring Barber in paid off almost instantly “Crystal Palace outplayed us in every department. Their strong, direct style had us thoroughly beaten.” Norwich manager Dave Stringer speaking post-match on six minutes when Bryan Gunn

sprinting behind the defence to collect a lofted pass from Andy Thorn before slotting home. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though, with Nigel Martyn making a number of first-class stops to keep a clean sheet and ensure the club moved into second-place behind Liverpool. With the club’s profile rising during 1990, the Croydon Cable TV Network introduced a regular weekly slot on a Friday evening entitled ‘Palace Chat-Back’ presented by Peter Saunders alongside Palace’s Pete King. In the same week as the launch of ‘Palace Chat-Back’ Martyn and Wright

Richard Shaw was the unlikely player to score the opening goal after just 80 seconds, having been moved into midfield instead of Gray, drilling home a low shot following a mazy run by Wright. Any thoughts of ending the day top of the Division One table disappeared midway through the second-half, though, when Stuart Pearce scored with two ferocious shots - one an incredible 30-yard free kick. But the Eagles never gave up with skipper Geoff Thomas equalising via a looped header from

the edge of the penalty box five minutes from time. Thomas added afterwards: “We’re not kidding ourselves that we are title-hunters. But you can be sure we’ll be involved in who is going to win the league.” Coppell had to tweak the side again for the trip across London to White Hart Lane seven days later on 22nd September, 1990. This time Alan Pardew came in for the absent Gray and Eddie McGoldrick also made his first appearance of the season for John Salako who had undergone a small operation on a hand. They also had to contend with a Spurs team that included Paul Gascoigne who was still being adulated following his tears in Turin from the summer World Cup. The tone was set in the fourth-minute when Gascoigne, from a distance, launched himself into a high challenge on Richard Shaw, leaving the Palace defender in a heap on the ground as play continued. To the astonishment of the Palace section in the crowd no card was shown and the sense of injustice was heightened when Gascoigne scored
