ith the Club Historian now able to mark a one in the ‘goals’ and
‘assists’ columns, Eberechi Eze can firmly say he has arrived back in south London after a man-ofthe-match performance against Leeds United. The five-star 90 minutes against Marcelo Bielsa’s side saw many, including Palace TV’s Chris Grierson, rue taking Eze out of their Fantasy Football lineups - “Got what you deserved!” Eze joked post-match. But it is clear, as the No.25 talks us through his reaction to Wilfried Zaha’s advice, the support from his friends and his unwavering self-belief, Eze fully ‘got what he deserved’ now he is able to call himself a Premier League goalscorer.
First player you idolised as a child? “Ronaldinho,” Eze replies without a moment’s hesitation. “Such a skilful player and talented guy, who always looked like he enjoyed playing football so much. “The way he played was the first style of football I looked at and thought: ‘That’s what I want to try and achieve eventually.’” Playing with the smile on his face that he did, plus opening his Palace account in such eyecatching fashion, it’s fair to say Eze is on that path. But where does he stand on Ronaldinho’s famous edge-of-the-

box goal against Chelsea in the Champions League? “Pure genius,” this time Eze barely lets us finish the question before defending his idol. “I don’t think I have seen a goal like that since, which means it must be something special. “Moments like that are the reason why I look at him and aspire to get to that level.” We don’t fancy dredging up the England ghosts of World Cups past, so left the David Seaman lob to be debated for another time.
First kit you remember having growing up? “Manchester United shirt from the Ruud van Nistelrooy times, when they were sponsored by Vodafone.” But weren’t you an Arsenal fan growing up, Ebs? “I don’t know why I didn’t end up supporting them as a kid. No idea where that shirt even came from.” We then ask Eze whether he had anyone’s name and number on the back of his shirt. The answer tells you a lot about his character. “You know what? I never had anyone’s name on the back of my shirts. Just wasn’t my thing. That was until I got ‘Bola’ on the back of an Arsenal shirt after my friend from school, Marc Bola, turned pro there.” It is hard not to smile at that support of a friend, especially considering competition during school would’ve no doubt been

International duty If I were to have any regrets from my career, it would be that I didn’t manage to get a senior England cap. At one stage, when I was at Newcastle United, I really thought it was coming; I was very close. But when I think about the players ahead of me: Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and of course the main one, David Beckham – not many, if any, forced Becks out of the team – then it’s nothing to be ashamed of. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as part of the youth teams, though. I remember playing France Under-21s across two legs, with the winner qualifying for the European Championships. The first leg was at White Hart Lane, which as a Spurs fan growing up (my dad was West Ham!), was special. I scored that night and the game ended 1-1.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time as part of the youth teams For the second leg four days later, France brought on Franck Ribéry in the second-half with the game at 0-0. At this point, no one really knew about Ribéry but we certainly did after he scored two quick goals and knocked us out! It reminds me, too, of when I faced Spain at Under-16s level. The player’s name escapes me, but there was one who stood out ahead of the game, with his flash boots and the way he was warming up; a proper technical player that we’ve become accustomed to seeing emerge from Barcelona’s La Masia. He was earmarked as the one to stop. Come full-time, we lost 4-1, that player we’d been admiring did nothing and a certain Fernando Torres scored all four.

Schools In Focus This term, Palace for Life Foundation has taken its Moving Maths programme to Forest Academy in Croydon. Moving Maths is an intervention group for Year Two children who need additional support with their basic maths skills. We use the power of P.E to engage the children through activities incorporated with numeracy - our aim is to help children understand maths in a fun and interactive way. Year Two teacher, Justyna Cross, said: “Year Two children have been immersed in a variety of engaging activities throughout the Autumn term. They have showed great resilience, motivations and absorption in Moving Maths games. “As a result, they are able now to use their addition and subtraction skills to add and subtract numbers mentally quickly and efficiently.”

the first moment it could. Also like most talented young footballers, it began in the footsteps of his father. But unlike most talented young footballers, Raymond’s father had experienced the life stretching before his son in prior years. Both Raymond Sr and Jr have played in the Crystal Palace Academy, with the latter recently achieving one of the most significant steps in his career: signing a professional contract.
because he used to play for Palace up to about my age [17],” Jadan explains. “He was a striker. He was nippy; he used to be the fastest in the team, scoring all the goals. So I wanted to be like him when I was younger, to be a striker. But there was a time when my more creative side came out and that [an attacking midfielder] is what I want to be now. “He’s always trying to find a way to help me to the next level. I have to keep on pushing and it’s never enough - keep on doing what I’m doing!” The Raymond family talent was clearly evident from a young age, as Jadan trialled for clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea as a child. But when Palace - then a struggling Championship side recovering from near-collapse came calling, Norwood-born Raymond knew what he wanted. And it wasn’t the glamour of London’s wealthiest teams.

Ciaran acted. He sold his flat, moved above the club and shared flyers for half-price pool with hundreds of students in the local area. One group of amateur DJs then approached him and asked if they could host a party in his club. Resultantly, Canavan’s survived the riots and initially empty streets to become a thriving pool club with a cult following. But it couldn’t survive the COVID-19 pandemic. Ten years on from empty Peckham streets and a business facing collapse, Ciaran shed a tear

the toilets. The things that meant a lot to me, all my staff were doing them. This isn’t a job, it’s a little family.” Canavan’s’ impact became clearest once it had closed down. Shutting his doors at 10pm after his final night, Ciaran was faced with a sea of former regulars, each turning up to wave farewell after 10 years. “The last Friday night was heartbreaking here,” Ciaran says. “The amount of people that turned up to wish me well and say goodbye, have their last game of pool. “There must have been 200 people out on the street, singing goodbye to Canavan’s and Auld Lang Syne. I opened the door to say goodbye to them and I couldn’t, it was absolutely heartbreaking. “We did what we could [to enforce distancing] but there was no way people were walking away from Canavan’s without their last game of pool or the last photograph in the club… We were the last members’ pool club in south London.” Ciaran’s story may be distressing, but it’s not unique, as he claims four bars in Peckham alone have closed since COVID-19 first swept through Britain. The Guardian report pub earnings in London dropped 47% from 2019 as the UK’s restrictions tightened. The facts highlight the struggle the leisure industry faces as it fights to stay alive during the pandemic. And with no one knowing how long the country will brace against the virus, there’s no saying how many businesses will be forced into the ground, and how many will lose their livelihoods, friends and purpose. “This is a very, very hard and difficult time,” Ciaran ends by saying. “Shout-out to any private landlords that are going through a rough time with tenants, just feeling humanity for the tenants themselves and the people they have working for them.”

palace for life Nathan Ferguson told children at a local primary school that hard work and preparation are essential to achieving your goals in life. The full-back shared his inspirational advice over a video call at a Palace for Life Foundation Team Mates session with a small group of children at Bandon Hill Meadow Field Primary School in Carshalton. “I started playing football when I was about eight, but the decision to play football as a career probably didn’t come until I was 13 or 14. When you make that decision to become a footballer, there are things that you need to change, such as your diet, your dedication or your friends. “Luck comes through preparation, getting an opportunity is often luck, but it’s the hard work that gets you there,” he explained.

Communication is so important, it’s good to teach it from a young age so that they learn that it’s ok to talk about your feelings The 20-year-old, who has been out of the game since January with a knee injury, explained to the youngsters how he was going to take positives from his current situation and would also like to help his team mates. “Short term, I want to get myself out of this injury and back to where I was, or even better, then hopefully I can then implement myself into the team and help to develop other players while I’m also working hard myself. “This is my first setback, I’ll come back and this will make me stronger through the rest of my career.” Ferguson’s thoughts chimed well with the

However, that footballing bow doesn’t necessarily represent the 90 minutes that had the biggest impact on a player’s career. Wore it best: Geoff Thomas
Story of the season Palace were riding on three remarkable highs by the time they reached ‘91/92: promotion in ’89, the FA Cup final in ’90, finishing third in ’91 and, of course, claiming the Zenith Data Systems trophy that same year. 1991/92, then, was never going to beat its predecessors.
1992 The finest hour: A 3-2 win over Oldham Athletic: Ian Wright’s final game for Crystal Palace. Appropriately, Wright netted on this occasion and so did strike partner, Mark Bright. A fitting end to a fine time in south London.
That said, it was no failure, with the Eagles finishing in a respectable 10th place to secure their berth in the inaugural Premier League. The writing, however, appeared on the wall with the departure of a host of club icons, most notably Ian Wright.
Where are they now? Crystal Palace’s early ‘90s squad have gone on to enjoy long and varied careers in the public eye. Several of that era went into management (Alan Pardew, John Pemberton, Richard Shaw), some into punditry (Ian Wright, Mark Bright, John Salako) and some into other noteworthy careers (Geoff Thomas, Nigel Martyn, Gary O’Reilly).
Buyers’ guide: This shirt is surprisingly easy to lay your hands on, with the aformentioned Dulwich, Peckham and Streatham craft-alers flocking to eBay to match their thick-rimmed glasses and impeccable facial hair. It helps that this kit ran into ‘92/93 as well, doubling your timescale to land a purchase.

Post-match, Coppell discussed Southgate’s debut: “It was a start for him,” he said. “He dipped his toes in and did okay. He probably felt he was just coming along to get the chips on the way home.” A couple of days later, progression to the next round was forgotten when Kent League outfit Greenwich Borough claimed that they never received payment for Ian Wright, who was now in his sixth season with the Eagles. Palace claimed that Wright had been
