OUR SUPPORTERS CAN REALLY HELP US BY GETTING FULLY BEHIND THE TEAM THIS AFTERNOON AND RAISING THOSE VOLUME LEVELS

THE MANAGER 05

determined to show our best I wish to welcome Unai Emery and his Arsenal team to Selhurst Park today for a game which will mark the completion of the first quarter of this Premier League season.

I, like everyone at the club, am disappointed with our points tally so far and although we could point to some misfortune in the last four games we’ve played, the reality is that we haven’t taken points from them which has caused us to slip down the table after an encouraging start to the campaign. We are well aware that the league in which we play is an unforgiving one, and that the margin between winning and losing is a very fine one. We face some stern tests in the next few weeks, starting today against an Arsenal side in excellent form and no doubt brimming with confidence after 10 straight wins in all competitions, and after that we go up against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in succession. However, we have certainly shown in the past that we are capable of putting in some good displays against the league’s top teams, and we are determined to show our best side here today and do our utmost to thwart Arsenal’s fine run of late. You, our supporters, can really help us by getting fully behind the team this afternoon and raising those volume levels which have made Selhurst Park a “hard place to come to” in the words of many visiting managers in recent years. We will not shirk our responsibility to entertain and to give maximum effort, as we are fully aware that we must provide some exciting football which will get you off your seats. But, it is worth bearing in mind that

PALACE

v

it is a long season and there remains a lot of football to be played over the course of the next seven months. Finally, I would like to give a mention to Connor Wickham and Scott Dann who have returned to first-team training after very long absences. Both have worked tirelessly to reach this stage and have also had to deal with the psychological barriers which are inevitable with serious, long-term injuries such as the ones they have suffered. I am sure you will join me in warmly welcoming them back, and will look forward to seeing them in a Palace shirt once again. Enjoy the game!

WE’LL HAVE TO BE SHARP, STAY ON THE FRONT FOOT AND BE AGGRESSIVE

THE CAPTAIN 07

no time for our heads to go down While our home form has been disappointing so far, if you look at our first three games at Selhurst we had 44 shots, which means that we’re either lacking a little luck or quality.

We have been trying hard to score in front of our fans to make you happy because we have a lot of good support, and we know how tough our stadium is for opponents to leave with three points. The Wolves game was another where we were better than our opponent but lost, which was painful for all of the team. Then after the Everton game, I was absolutely gutted. We had better chances than them, especially in the first half, and in the second I had the penalty to give us the lead but I missed. I was sure I was going to score but I didn’t shoot very well and the keeper did a good job, but I have confidence to take another one and I’ll do my best to score it. I’ll keep my head up and try to do better in the next game for myself, for the supporters and the team as well. It was made worse as we were punished in the last five minutes by conceding twice. The first goal was disappointing because until that moment we had defended well, but we conceded in the 87th minute in their stadium and they took more energy from that to score the second a few minutes later. When you come in at full-time and see the score is 2-0, it was difficult for us but especially for me. However we are professional football players and there is no time for our heads to go down as we have to try and be better for the next game and make our fans happy. We now have a tough run of fixtures but it is not the first time we have had to play against the top teams

PALACE

in a row. We are capable of getting some good results because we have plenty of quality in the squad and Selhurst Park isn’t easy for any team to come to and play a comfortable game, so we will make it hard for our opponents and do our best. Right now we are taking things game by game, and we are only thinking about Arsenal. They have quality in the squad and a good manager, and they are playing differently this season. I was surprised they lost their first two games because of the way they played, but now they are on a great run of form. However we have to concentrate on ourselves. I’ve scored twice in my last two games against them which helps me because for every single game you prepare in a different way. Arsenal this season is a different team to previous years, so we’ll have to be sharp, stay on the front foot and be aggressive. We cannot allow them to be comfortable, and if we show that then we’ll be closer to a win today which would be great because then we can finally celebrate with you all at full-time. Make some noise!

THESE ARE ALWAYS GREAT OCCASIONS WITH A GREAT ATMOSPHERE, AND I KNOW YOU WILL ALL GET BEHIND THE BOYS AS WE TRY TO GET THINGS BACK ON TRACK

THE CHAIRMAN 09

show what makes our club special Welcome to the players, staff and directors of Arsenal to south London this lunchtime, and as always I’d like to give a warm welcome back to Selhurst Park to each and every Palace fan.

Today’s guests are in fine form, winning 10 matches on the bounce ahead of their game against Sporting Lisbon in midweek. Unai Emery and his players are clearly doing a great job despite losing their first two games, but as always we are confident in our own ability to go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the country. Obviously we have had a disappointing run of results and are now entering a series of league fixtures that includes today’s London rivals, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, and we don’t need telling that we are desperate for some points and goals. These are always great occasions with a great atmosphere, and I know you will all get behind the boys as we try to get things back on track. One of the positives to take from the late defeat at Everton was welcoming back Connor Wickham to first-team action since his dreadful injury sustained in November 2016. That is an extraordinary length of absence, and it has been a turbulent road back to action for him with a few false starts along the way. It is a testament to Connor as a man that he is now back in contention, and everyone involved with the club has their fingers crossed that he continues to build up his strength and match fitness to give Roy more options. Away from first-team matters, I hope you will have seen the coverage of the Palace for Life Foundation’s Marathon March during the international break. More than 150 of us walked 26.2 miles from Selhurst Park through London to Trafalgar Square. Blessed with

PALACE

brilliant weather, it was heart-warming to walk with fans and several former players including Brighty, Andrew Johnson, Andy Gray, Sasa Curcic and Neil Shipperley to raise over £100,000 to help grow the charity’s fantastic work in our community. A huge congratulations must go to all the walkers and I’d also like to thank the generous donors and Utilita for sponsoring the event. The only regret I have is that Brighty couldn’t keep up with my pace, so we finished an hour or so apart! As it’s half-term, it was really important that we invested time and energy in putting on events for our younger fans. Our under-23s match at Selhurst Park on Monday was just £1 for kids to watch - something we will be doing more of throughout the season - and the Foundation put on coaching courses for hundreds of children and a special session for 60 Junior Members in Beckenham, who were surprised to meet several firstteam players who joined in after training. We have even more planned for our Junior Members this Christmas – details will be released soon on cpfc.co.uk. The world is watching today, so let’s show everyone what makes our club special both on and off the pitch, and make it a day to remember. Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Arsenal // Sunday 28th October // Selhurst Park

Today's game Palace go in search of just their fifth ever win against Arsenal as Roy Hodgson’s team hope to put their fourgame winless run in the Premier League behind them. It’ll be a tough ask against a rejuvenated Gunners though, following the arrival of Unai Emery. Filling Arsene Wenger’s shoes could have been a daunting prospect for the Spaniard, but he has quickly got to grips with transforming the fortunes of his new side. Ahead of the midweek trip to Portugal to face Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Europa League, the Gunners strung together 10 successive wins in all competitions for the first time since October 2007. On Monday night they came from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium, and their sparkling football in recent weeks has been reminiscent of Wenger’s world-class side of the mid-noughties. January arrival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in that game from the bench to boost his Premier League goal average to one every 104.6 minutes – the best minutes-per-goal ratio in the competition’s history. The north Londoners have enjoyed the better of this fixture in recent years, winning six of their last nine matches against Palace but their only defeat in that time was a famous 3-0 victory for Sam Allardyce’s Eagles only last year, while the Eagles also came close to getting a result last season but succumbed to a 3-2 loss in SE25.

Andros townsend has had a hand in three goals in his last two Premier League games against Arsenal, scoring twice and assisting once, all at Selhurst Park.

Newsroom MARATHON MARCH RAISES OVER £100,000 On Saturday 13th October, more than 150 Eagles supporters, chairman Steve Parish and club legends Andrew Johnson, Mark Bright, Neil Shipperley, Andy Gray and Sasa Curcic walked 26.2 miles from Selhurst Park to Trafalgar Square in support of the Palace for Life Foundation Marathon March, powered by Utilita. The sponsored walk raised over £100,000 for the Foundation’s work with hard-to-reach youngsters across south London, and it travelled through Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park taking in landmarks such as the London Eye and even passing London rivals Fulham’s ground, Craven Cottage. Parish, who started walking at 8am from Selhurst Park, said: “There is so much positivity around, with loads of money being raised for a good cause. It’s been fantastic and reminds you what a football club is all about for so many people.” Palace for Life Foundation CEO Mike Summers also walked the 26.2 miles. He enthused: “I didn’t think it would be possible, but I think it was even better than last year. It was an absolutely brilliant day.” It’s not too late to support the Marathon March donate £5 by texting CPFC18 £5 to 70070.

In brief

Two fixture changes Two of the Eagles’ fixtures during the festive period have been changed due to live TV coverage. The home match against Chelsea has been moved to Sunday 30th December with a 12pm kick-off, meaning that the away trip to Wolves also has been pushed back to Tuesday 2nd January, starting at 7.45pm Hennessey breaks Palace record After appearing in Wales’ 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland last week, Wayne Hennessey has broken the club’s all-time cap record. The shot-stopper leapfrogged Mile Jedinak at the top of the standings, as since he arrived in SE25 on transfer deadline day in February 2014 he has played in 39 internationals from a possible 41, handing him the club record.

DULWICH BEATEN IN FRIENDLY A strong Palace side entertained a healthy crowd by netting a hatful of superb goals en route to a 5-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet on 11th October, on a night that helped raise much-needed funds for the National League South side. 1,226 supporters packed into Tooting and Mitcham FC’s Imperial Fields ground to boost the coffers of Dulwich, who had been forced to leave their Champion Hill home during their dispute with their property development owners. Max Meyer’s first goal for the club and a Sullay Kaikai strike handed Roy Hodgson’s team a two-goal lead at the break, before the returning Connor Wickham and youngsters James Daly and Kian Flanagan added further gloss to the scoreline on a night that saw Scott Dann and Wickham also gain some much-needed match action.

Tickets for a night of fine dining, comedy performances and fundraising start at just £95 + VAT, with more information available at cpfc.co.uk/survivalsunday. Kouyaté skippers Senegal to AFCON Cheikhou Kouyaté helped his Senegal side book their place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by beating Sudan 1-0 in Khartoum last week. The Palace man once again captained his side to a second win of the international break on his 45th cap for his country, and now he seems set to feature in his third AFCON.

Last week saw Wayne Hennessey write his name into the Eagles’ record books by becoming their most capped international, continuing the shotstopper’s fine start to the season. Here he discusses with Jonathon Rogers how he keeps his current form in perspective, having found himself questioning his future in the game just six short years ago.

WAYNE HENNESSEY 17

Given the 126-mile separation between Selhurst Park and the Severn Bridge, it seems strange to think about how much influence the small country of Wales has had on the fortunes of Crystal Palace FC. From Ginger Williams becoming the fledgling club’s first supreme goalscorer, Vic Rouse’s heroics in goal spanning two decades, Ian Evans, Peter Nicholas and Ian Walsh starring in the ‘Team of the Eighties’ and Chris Coleman and Eric Young developing into ‘90s cult heroes, there has been no shortage of stardust heading across the border from the principality to the Palace, and now another Welshman can lay claim to a piece of club history. Dublin’s Aviva Stadium may seem like an unusual place for an Eagles record to be broken, but last week saw Wayne Hennessey win his 39th cap as a Palace player in Wales’ win over the Republic of Ireland, and in the process overhaul Mile Jedinak to be the club’s most decorated international. Now he stands both literally and figuratively above all of Palace’s other illustrious names, the 6’7” keeper can reflect on his feat. “It is fantastic to do it, but I’m surprised it’s a record with the amount of very talented players Crystal Palace have had over the years. "For me to beat a player like Mile makes it extra special. I obviously know him well and he is a fantastic guy. What he has done in the past for the club is fantastic, and was a great captain for Australia like he was at Palace, so knowing him personally makes this record even better. “There have been some fantastic Welsh players at this club in the past such as my old manager Chris Coleman who used to remind me of them all the time, so to look back and for me to be the record cap holder is special. It’s an honour, and hopefully I can add more to it so no-one will be beat it!” Judging on his form so far this campaign, Hennessey could find himself extending and holding his newly-found record in his safe hands for many years to come. The summer arrival of Vicente Guaita

PALACE

v

ARSENAL

ramped up speculation as to who was going to be the Eagles’ number one come the season’s kick-off, but the confidence gained from hearing Roy Hodgson state that he had no reason to take the jersey away from the Welshman has been injected into some strong displays between the posts. A number of top drawer saves have helped ensure three clean sheets have been kept already this season, putting Hennessey in a good position to surpass the seven he made last term. He feels that the Eagles fans are witnessing his best displays since he arrived at Selhurst Park back in February 2014.

to look back and for me to be the record cap holder is special

“I think it’s been my best run in a Palace shirt,” he revealed. “I would have liked to have kept a few more clean sheets but hopefully I can beat my tally from last season as things have been going well so far and I need to keep that going. That’ll be a big challenge for me, so now I need to keep that up to maintain the number one spot. “For the manager to say what he did was really good, so hopefully I can keep him happy and not give him any reason to drop me. I’ve been at the club for a while now and goalkeepers have come in and started the first game of the season and that’s not very nice, but you just have to keep pushing and try and get back in the team. However, now I’ve got the shirt I want to maintain it. It is a healthy competition here as it

18 WAYNE HENNESSEY

keeps you on your toes, and I think we have that right through the whole dressing room and not just in the goalkeeping department.” The 31-year-old’s upturn in fortunes can be traced back to Dean Kiely’s arrival as goalkeeping coach at the start of the year; a fourth new voice barking orders in four years following George Wood, Andy Woodman and Martyn Margetson who previously helped tweak the Eagles’ custodians’ glovework. While Hennessey admits the chopping and changing hasn’t been ideal, he is delighted with his current mentor who is bringing the best out of a willing student.

Dean has come in and been fantastic, he’s a great guy and I’m really happy to have him here “Dean has come in and been fantastic,” Hennessey said. “He’s a great guy and I’m really happy to have him here. He’s worked a lot with me this year and improved my game, and he’s a big influence. He’s played the game at a high level and he knows what you’re going through. “I prefer a longer-term partnership and now Dean is in hopefully he can stay for a long time. He works really well with the manager and everyone around the club praises him, and what he does on the training field to help the goalkeepers is amazing. “I’m a big believer that you’re always learning, especially as a goalkeeper and that’ll keep happening until the day you retire. Sometimes you go through

WAYNE HENNESSEY 21

years of your life where injuries can get you down, but touch wood I can stay fit and keep learning.” Looking back at his career, the Bangor-born shotstopper’s fears about injury cutting him down in his prime are understandable. Back in 2012 when playing in the top-flight for Wolves, a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee forced him out of action for nearly 18 months and made him begin to question his future in the game. Through no fault of his own, he would find himself in the third tier following successive relegations for the Molineux club, and then farmed out on loan to Yeovil Town to try and rediscover his form and confidence. The thought of playing 100 more times in the Premier League may have been a pipedream at that moment, but now Hennessey is on the cusp of doing just that later this month, though he admits those dark days will ensure a sense of perspective while he enjoys the highs of being a top-flight goalkeeper. “It was a difficult stage of my career and life as well,” he admitted. “When I did my ACL the surgeon said it would be eight to 12 months, and then I managed to get back training and re-ruptured it. I maybe came back too soon so that was a difficult part of my career. My head was low and I wondered if I was ever going to play again as 10 years ago an ACL was a career-ending injury, so for me to do it twice was difficult to take. “Wolves went from the Premier League down to League One, and I was just sat there watching or doing my rehab. I managed to get myself back on track, and Yeovil was the perfect opportunity for me. I had 15 games for them and played really well, and I enjoyed the experience. It was a shock leaving a big club like Wolves to go to a little club like Yeovil, but I enjoyed my time there and they treated me really well, so I’ll always have a little place in my heart for them. “After that, it was the perfect time for me to come to Crystal Palace, and I’ve enjoyed it all the way. To get close to 100 Premier League games for Palace is a

PALACE

v

ARSENAL

massive achievement, especially with the injuries that I’ve had, so I’m very proud. I want to be the goalkeeper here for a long time.” That looks set to be the case at international level where Hennessey is Wales’ undoubted number one. He broke Palace’s cap record by playing in 39 of his nation’s last 41 matches, bringing him up to 80 in total since he made his bow as a 20-year-old, putting him within reach of his childhood idol Neville Southall’s haul of 92 caps. His time with the national team has seemingly crossed three generations of players, but hands the glovesman a unique perspective on how his country’s fortunes may continue to rise in the coming years as he suddenly finds himself surrounded in the squad by teenage sensations. “I played with Ryan Giggs and with him being on the other side now, you look back and realise that time has flown,” he said. “I’m still young for a goalkeeper as well, so it’s good to look back but I can also look forward too. “It feels strange because I’m probably the third or fourth oldest player in the dressing room now. Ryan is bringing youngsters in and they’ve gelled really well, and their performances on the pitch shows that they’re grabbing their chance with both hands. It’s good because now we haven’t just got a solid team but a solid squad, so it’s exciting times for Welsh football. “I’ve just hit the 80-cap mark now so reaching Southall’s record would be interesting. I’m also four or five clean sheets away from having the most of those too, so hopefully I can reach these targets. I need to keep playing well and impressing because Wales have got a talented goalkeeper behind me in Danny Ward, so he’s keeping me on my toes.” As Hennessey has shown at Palace this season, having someone breathing down his neck only brings better performances between the posts, boding well for both club and country as he aims to continue the century-spanning love affair between the Eagles and Red Dragons.

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace matchday programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

Part V

1939 - 1946

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1939/40 (start)

1939/40 & 1940/41 For their initial Regional League, London War Cup and friendly matches, Palace produced a four-page programme printed in black and white and costing one penny. The design of the cover remained the same and inside you would find “Editorial Notes” reflecting on previous games and other news. The back page was split into two halves, one detailing that day’s fixtures and the half-time scoreboard, while the other was taken up specifying air raid precautions if the sirens sounded. These advised spectators to always carry a gas mask and listed the five nearest air raid shelters to Selhurst Park, with directions to the nearest exits.

Despite the worsening situation in Europe, the Football League season started as usual and for their first home game against Bristol Rovers on 2nd September, the club produced exactly the same style and size of programme as the previous season. However, there was the addition of previous feature “Palace Personalities” towards the back; the subject of which for the Rovers game was new manager George Irwin, a former goalkeeper who had been promoted from head trainer. Other articles included “Editorial Notes”, ‘Our Visitors’, a cartoon and the lineups in the centre pages, surrounded by adverts including one for Gillette razor blades. There was no reference at all to the political situation, but at 11am the following morning after Palace’s 3-0 win, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that Britain was at war with Germany. In response, the Football League abandoned the whole season with the records from those first three games expunged, and for a few weeks uncertainty prevailed until regional leagues were introduced.

From November members of the three armed services would, if wearing uniform, be allowed into the ground at half-price. Another indication of those fraught times was a note that for the visit of Arsenal on Boxing Day, the club would only be allowed to admit up to 15,000 spectators.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

1941/42 - 1944/45

1945/46

As restrictions and rationing bit, the club could only produce a single sheet measuring 14cms x 21.5cms with the projected teams on the front and fixtures and results on the back, however it still cost one penny. Midway through the 1942/43 campaign it looks like the restriction on the use of paper was eased as, although remaining as a single sheet, the size was increased to 17cms x 24cms that allowed for the editor to add a “Club Gossip” section on matches and updates on those players in the forces. Supporters who purchased the sheet issued for the game against Luton Town on 30th September 1944 found the whole of the reverse taken up with a statement by chairman Percy Harper. He expressed his views on bringing greyhound racing to Selhurst Park, as well as criticising the entertainment tax the club had to pay. That got him into trouble with the Football League and the FA for considering it was time those incumbent made way for younger men.

Even though the war had ended in May, the 1945/46 season still maintained the regional leagues but the FA Cup did restart. However, the Supporters Club had taken on programme production and pulled together an eight-page publication, but due to the continuation of rationing a single sheet was produced for some matches. Consisting of blue ink on white paper, the eight-page twopence edition was the same size as the early wartime sheets, and was printed by the Croydon Times newspaper entitled Chronicle. The pages contained “Club Notes” written by the Secretary-Manager which looked back at recent games and player news. “Shorts and Sports”, a selection of jokes, featured as did the cartoon following its reappearance from previous seasons. In the centre there was a brief “Palace Studio” profile on a player alongside the day’s teams. Towards the back there was a fixture list and “Supporters Club News”, while the back page advertised greyhound racing at Catford and the latest acts appearing at the Croydon Empire.

13 ENGLISH LEAGUE TITLES The manager One of the most decorated managers in recent years, a knee injury forced Emery to end his modest playing career to become boss of third division side Lorca in 2004. He quickly worked through the ranks to spend time with Valencia and Spartak Moscow, but it was at Sevilla where he made his mark by winning three consecutive UEFA Europa Leagues. That saw him handed the top job at Paris St Germain where he won seven trophies in two seasons before replacing Arsene Wenger in north London.

Club legend All of Adams’ 22-year playing career was spent at Arsenal where he lifted four top-flight titles across three different decades, as well as three FA Cups, two League Cups and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The first of 674 first-team appearances came in 1983 and within five years he was named captain aged only 21. He was at the heart of the Gunners’ famous backline that provided the backbone for much of their success, and has been commemorated by a statue which sits outside the Emirates Stadium.

Leno began at Stuttgart but didn’t feature for their first-team and was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen in 2011. After impressing there he was snapped up permanently and went on to become one of his nation’s top stoppers over the course of 300 first-team appearances, earning a maiden full international call-up in October 2015. The striker hasn’t stopped scoring since arriving in north London for a club record £56 million back in January, and already has eight goals this term. An unspectacular start to his career at AC Milan, Dijon, Lille and Monaco led to little fanfare, but it was while at Saint Etienne that he showed his class, and in 2013 he was purchased by Borussia Dortmund. He would prove to be prolific in Germany, netting 141 goals in just 213 games to become a star, prompting Arsenal to shell out for his signature. AFC Games: 24 AFC Goals: 18

Things you didn't know... ABOUT ARSENAL

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Arsenal.

Arsenal’s original name was Dial Square. Founded in 1886 by a group of workers at Woolwich Arsenal’s Armament Factory in south-east London, they took their name from the factory’s sundial. They played their first match in December that year on an open field on the Isle of Dogs but would move around in their early years, eventually settling in Plumstead in Kent and would win that county’s Senior Cup in 1890.

Arsenal were the first ever southern club to enter the Football League in 1893, which had been dominated by northern teams and the League wanted to expand the geographical reach of professional football. The invitation was timely, as other southern clubs had frowned upon Arsenal’s turn to professionalism two years earlier, and banned them from all competitions, restricting them to friendlies and FA Cup games.

The Gunners almost merged with Fulham in 1910. Low attendances due to their isolated location in the-then suburban Plumstead meant that in 1910 they went into voluntary liquidation and were purchased by a consortium, the largest shareholder being Fulham chairman Sir Henry Norris. He tried to incorporate Arsenal into the Cottagers, but this was blocked by the Football League.

PALACE

v

ARSENAL

CHRIS WATERS 51

As well as Selhurst Park, famed architect Archibald Leitch was also asked to design Highbury after Norris drove through the purchase of land in north London, to the fury of both local residents and the Plumstead-based supporters. Based on today’s prices the whole project cost in excess of £90 million, but had the desired effect; crowds immediately rose from an average of 11,000 to over 23,000.

The common myth that Arsenal have never been relegated is not true! The Gunners finished bottom of the First Division in 1912/13, meaning their maiden season at Highbury was spent in the second tier. They were controversially re-elected in 1919 at Tottenham Hotspur’s expense, but the Gunners have gone on to remain at the highest level for a record 99 consecutive years.

The youngest player ever to score for the Gunners is Cesc Fabregas, who was just 16 years and 212 days old when he netted against Wolves in a 5-1 League Cup win in December 2003; the same season that their Invincibles side won the title. The Spaniard went on to play for the club 212 times over eight years, but didn’t receive a league winner’s medal that season due to playing too few games.

Think you see Arsenal all the time on TV? Well, it’s nothing new. The club was involved in the first game to be covered on radio in 1927, and followed this up by playing in the first match shown live on television in 1937, when they played their reserves. Throw in the fact that their game against Manchester United was the first to be shown in 3D in 2010, and you can start to see their domination of the screen!

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

howmen like Mark Lazarus are an integral part of soccer. So are the men of industry who help set up the chances for their more demonstrative colleagues to delight the crowds by putting their names on the scoring sheet. Such a player is Crystal Palace’s Steve Kember. It has not been too happy a start for Kember, with suggestions that he was about to leave Palace, but he himself stepped into the limelight on Saturday in the shellacking of Carlisle United. With the thoughts of a possible move in his mind, Kember has not always given the crowd what they demand of him. He has worked diligently enough for the professional viewer to be impressed – Arsenal have had a look – but not been able to get on the target himself. So it was with the utmost relief that he ended this sequence on Saturday with a cracking shot that opened Palace’s account in the eleventh minute. Lazarus pushed over a centre that was partially deflected and Kember, steaming in, rammed a rising drive at speed into the net. It is early days for fans to talk of promotion for Palace. Better opposition than Carlisle will be met; the visitors mustered about three shots worthy of the name throughout. But do not knock Palace for that. Their forwards, once into a rhythm, broke down the scanty resistance and fired in countless shots. It is this

Mark Lazarus

aspect that probably appeals most to the fans. Palace in the past were often accused of never being willing to take a poke at goal; here everyone was trying to get into the act and if shots missed, at least they were there in profusion. The transformation on the flanks has helped Palace no end. Aggressiveness by Lazarus has added PALACE

just beat Jackson to drive home the loose ball, Ross taking a knock on the head in the process. Mysteriously, two Carlisle defenders elected to change boots at this time. It made no difference because Lazarus and Kember then broke down a dispirited defence and Taylor, left completely unmarked, was able to select his spot. Jackson had a shot blocked by Garbutt on the line but Palace seemed to have had enough and eased off over the last 20 minutes, despite the appeals of the 15,170 crowd for more goals. Palace: Jackson (J.), Sewell, Bannister, Payne, McCormick, Blyth, Lazarus, Kember, Jackson (C.), Woodruff, Taylor. Carlisle: Ross, Passmoor, Caldwell, Ternent, Garbutt, Marsland, Barton, Murray, McIlmoyle, Balderstrong, McVitie.

great sparkle and now Colin Taylor, after a slow beginning, seems to be getting more into the picture. He was concerned in four of the goals – and you cannot ask for much more than that. Once Kember had started the rot there was never any question that Palace would romp it. Taylor came into the picture next with a low drive that Ross only just turned away at the stretch and Lazarus blazed through to send a shot whistling past. Inevitably a second goal came. In the 27th minute Taylor, in a good position to shoot, unselfishly flighted the ball to the far post for Lazarus to nip in, rise high and nod the ball down into the net. Three goals in six minutes in the second half completely shattered Carlisle. Kember and Jackson combined down the left for the first, Jackson’s centre being terribly bumbled and fumbled by Marsland, who allowed Taylor to step in and net. Then a fierce shot from Taylor was only half-held by Ross, and Kember PALACE

aving reached the top of the Second Division with an emphatic victory at Millwall, the Eagles remained at the summit a week later at Selhurst Park on 23rd September when a David Swindlehurst header midway through the second half was sufficient to defeat a dogged Oldham Athletic, who had been just two points behind at kick-off. Next up was a visit to fellow promotion-chasers Stoke City at their former Victoria Ground. Played in torrential rain the Eagles conceded after just five minutes, but despite this setback Terry Venables’ team showed discipline in the ranks, and then 20 minutes from time as the manager was about to substitute Jerry Murphy, the mercurial Irishman spotted the Potters keeper well off his line and sent an accurate chip dipping into the net. Needless to say, the ‘no. 8’ card was withdrawn and no substitution made with an important point gained. The month of October was dominated by a League Cup tie that had paired Palace with First Division Aston Villa and took three encounters to resolve. It started with a trip to the Midlands where a 1-1 draw ended somewhat acrimoniously, taking the gloss off a superb display by John Burridge - back on familiar turf - who pulled off a save from a Tommy Craig penalty on the hour mark with Villa leading 1-0. 15 minutes later Palace had their own spot-kick and Nick Chatterton,

with less power and more direction, sent Jimmy Rimmer the wrong way to earn a replay back in SE25 six days later. Part two ended goalless after extra-time, before the saga ended on Monday 16th at Coventry City’s Highfield Road home as Villa ran out 3-0 winners. In between there was the little matter of facing Brighton and Hove Albion at Selhurst. The Eagles were

themselves in front with only a few minutes left, but with fans drifting away Walsh scored his second of the game by latching onto a mistake by a defender, and then in the last minute Elwiss claimed both points for the Eagles with a coolly-taken chip over the Preston keeper. Swindlehurst returned for the goalless game at Wrexham on Saturday 21st October but skipper Cannon was missing, and three minutes from time Paul Hinshelwood had to be stretchered off with a knee injury that would sideline him for the next two months. Despite the setbacks, Palace maintained their place at the top of the table heading into November. able to contain the Seagulls in an evenly-contested first half in front of 33,685 spectators but the second half was a different matter as Palace scored three times in 18 minutes. Firstly Jim Cannon progressed upfield in a move that involved Kenny Sansom and Murphy but miskicked the ball which allowed Vince Hilaire to rifle home, and then Swindlehurst weaved his way past two defenders to fire in an angled shot. Five minutes from the end the Seagulls’ keeper Eric Steele failed to hold a shot from Mike Elwiss and Hilaire was on hand to prod the ball in the net, but as Palace congratulated themselves the perennial thorn in their side Brian Horton found himself unmarked to claim a consolation. Despite that, the Eagles returned to the top of the table as a result of the 3-1 win. The next match would see Elwiss return to his former club Preston North End the following Saturday and Ian Walsh came in for the injured Swindlehurst. It was a game the struggling Lilywhites probably felt they should have won after leading twice and finding

Pemberton When you joined Palace in 1988, what were your first impressions? I had a number of offers from other clubs at the time including the one from Palace. Having played with Geoff Thomas at Crewe Alexandra I got some feedback on what the set-up was like, and after a chat with the club the decision was made. It was a very athletic team with a lot of pace and two strikers in Mark Bright and Ian Wright who were on fire. It made for a really exciting squad, and a group who you could tell had something to prove. At the training ground discussions were all about getting promotion which only spreads belief through everyone and puts you in the right frame of mind.

at games and it brings back so many memories of great times I had as a player at Palace.

Steve Coppell played a huge part in your decision to join the Eagles didn’t he? When I was making my decision I spoke to my mum, and she had always loved Steve as she was a big Manchester United fan so after a chat with her it was time for him to become my gaffer! Comparing Steve to other managers that I have worked with, I recognise how tactically astute he was at the time and he was also very approachable which is important. Personally speaking I have a great bond with him and we still see each other occasionally now

You didn’t win any of your first six matches, were there any worries at that point? The season started with a massive derby against Chelsea at our place that ended as a draw and then after a loss at Watford we went on a run of draws but without playing too badly. We knew that we needed to keep plugging away and results would come, and so it proved. Once we got on a roll we had what it took to be a threat to other teams, so it was important we kept that focus despite a slow start.

THE GLORY YEARS 61

Palace played seven matches in October and won six of them. Did that feel like a turning point? That month confidence started to grow after we beat Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town, which was just what we needed. With the make-up of the team we could always score goals but whether it was in the 1980s or now, it’s about winning games and that month will be one that we can look back on as an important one in the outcome of our season. For whatever reason it was a crazy few weeks with the number of games being packed in, and after suffering a 5-4 loss up at Blackburn we knew we had to show that we could bounce back. We went up to Bradford and won two more back at Selhurst to put us in a strong position going into the winter months. You won promotion via the play-offs, were you a fan of the fledgling concept back then? I thought it was quite good because right from the start it gave teams like us a real chance to get promotion as we knew we were capable of beating anybody on the

PALACE

day. Once we got in the play-offs we were just relieved to make it and weren’t really concerned with who our opponents were going to be. The Swindon game was always going to be a tough one but we won it after the second leg and went onto Blackburn. We obviously didn’t expect the result we suffered up there and could have lost by more, although once Eddie McGoldrick got a goal back we knew had a great chance back at our place, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Step Back

Testimonials were a lot more common 40 years ago than they are now, and in those days a player’s “testimonial year encompassed many fundraising events. Jim Cannon was actually awarded with two testimonials, and as part of his first in November 1980 he met fellow Scot and world-famous comedian Billy Connolly backstage before an appearance at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

SUSANNA REID STARS AT GIRLS’ FOOTBALL FESTIVAL Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid was the guest of honour at Heavers Farm Primary School in Selhurst, where she was celebrating a Girls’ Football Festival with the Palace for Life Foundation. Susanna, one of our Patrons, joined in with football skills and mini-games as more than 50 Year 3 and 4 pupils from local schools took part in the Festival as part of the Premier League Girls programme. Speaking at the event, Susanna said: “When I was at school, football was considered a boys’ sport and you didn’t play it. In 2018 that wouldn’t cross anyone’s mind and it’s absolutely fantastic to see so many girls playing football and enjoying themselves here.” Lifelong Palace fan Susanna became our Patron in early 2018 and spoke positively about the impact of our work in the community: “Thousands of kids are being helped by the Foundation and it was an honour to be asked to be a Patron. It’s local and it’s just fantastic to be a part of it.”

Premier League Girls football encourages girls to get involved in regular sessions that improve fitness and confidence. The Foundation deliver sessions in five primary schools each week that are focused on building girls’ confidence, running PE lessons as well as after-school and lunchtime activities with pupils who have been identified as needing some extra help. One of the pupils who took part in the programme, seven-year-old Melodie, was referred by her teacher in a bid to improve her confidence and behaviour. As a result, Melodie’s school attainment has improved and she now finds it easier to focus in the classroom. Melodie, who presented Susanna with a Palace shirt at the Festival, said: “I liked it because I got to play lots of games and I felt happy after I’d done the sessions. Pam [McRoberts, Palace Ladies player and Foundation coach] is a nice coach.” To find out more about our work in Women and Girls football, please contact: roxannebennett@palaceforlife.org

IN FOCUS 71

James Daly

I really enjoyed playing in the Dulwich friendly a couple of weeks ago. It was good to see what the manager wants me to do tactically, be around the boys and play off that intensity. It’s a big step up as it’s a lot more physical and technical at first-team level, and you have to test your ability a lot and be focused at all times when you play with them. The game was a friendly in nature but it was a chance to impress, put your name up there and grab the manager’s attention. My loan move to Kingstonian is going well. It’s good to be in and around a men’s set-up and get the experience of playing week in, week out competitively with three points and even the manager’s job on the line. It’s not like the under-23s where you can get away with having a poor performance and go on to the next week; you have to play at your top level or you’re not playing, so it’s ruthless and that’s what’s testing me. I am benefiting from balancing my time between both them and the under-23s. I usually train every day apart from on a Thursday when I’m with Kingstonian in the evening, and that’s vital as I need to be in most days working on stuff and keep playing with the under-23s where the technical ability is higher. Kingstonian is the main priority for me as it’s men’s football and that’s where I need to be playing regularly, but if there is a game midweek for the under-23s and I’ve got enough rest time, then I’ll play for them too.

PALACE

Mark Bright is always monitoring me. It’s his job to look after the loan players and he’s been great for me. He’s been to most training sessions and games and gives me tips and advice on how to improve after each game and what I need to work on. He’s a club legend and scored so many goals, so he’s the best person to learn off. I spent most of last season as a left wing-back before moving to striker. Initially I came to the club as a forward and worked with Richard Shaw at under-16 level, and as I made the jump from the under-18s to the development squad he knew my ability up front. Youth football is all about experimenting with positions and playing to the best of your strengths, and striker is where mine are at. Now I know that it’s about settling down and working on what I need to improve on. Sitting on the bench at Bournemouth last season was unbelievable. It capped off an amazing few months for me having stepped up from the under-18s, and just gave me a little glimpse of what it can be like if you keep working hard and grafting. I’m at Kingstonian until January and then we’ll see what happens. I just want to keep scoring goals for them and get my name out there, and hopefully progress to get a better loan after January such as at a Football League team. If I get that, then hopefully I’ll score some more goals and try to keep impressing Roy during the week, and then who knows!

The Eagles’ home woes continued as Matt Doherty’s goal 10 minutes into the second half saw them fall to their fourth straight defeat in SE25. Chances were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes but former Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey did well to deny his old side when Raul Jimenez sprang the Palace offside trap and forced an outstretched stop from the Welshman. After the restart Palace were given an early warning when Ruben Neves fired into the Whitehorse Lane Stand,

but it wasn’t heeded as Doherty found Jimenez inside the area who held the ball up nicely, and was allowed to return it to the wing-back who drilled the ball past Hennessey at his near post. On 69 minutes only a superb double save by Rui Patricio prevented an equaliser after he blocked a Max Meyer volley and a Jeffrey Schlupp follow-up, but Nuno Espirito Santos’ high-flying side were the thickness of the crossbar away from claiming a bigger win when Ivan Cavaleiro thumped a shot off it late on.

Late goals by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun saw Everton snatch all the points on Merseyside, leaving Palace to rue Luka Milivojevic’s second half penalty miss. The visitors had the better chances in the first half, and they almost edged in front when James Tomkins nodded a corner across goal and Cheikhou Kouyaté headed the ball off the crossbar, but just before the 60-minute mark Palace were handed a huge chance to go in front. For the first time all game, Wilfried Zaha teased his way into the box and cut back, deceiving Seamus

Coleman who brought him down for a penalty. Milivojevic attempted to drill it down the middle, but the diving Jordan Pickford dangled out a trailing leg and managed to prevent the kick finding the net. It still looked as though Roy Hodgson’s team would gain a point, but with three minutes remaining Ademola Lookman scooped a cross into the box where CalvertLewin headed past a helpless Wayne Hennessey from close range, and to add insult to injury Tosun fired in a second two minutes later to seal the three points.
