IF WILF CHANNELS THAT FRUSTRATION POSITIVELY INTO SCORING GOALS LIKE THE ONE LAST WEEKEND, THEN HE’LL BECOME AN EVEN BETTER PLAYER

THE MANAGER 05

aiming to start a new run of form It’s great to be coming into today’s game on the back of a hardfought victory last weekend after we beat Huddersfield Town to get our first Premier League points since the opening day.

I was pleased that our display was rewarded with the maximum points this time, unlike when we had played well against Liverpool and especially during the first half against Watford, but both times we unfortunately came away with nothing. What pleased me most last week was the resolute defensive display shown by the players, which allowed an organised and spirited team achieve a potentially crucial victory, as well as a much merited clean sheet. One moment of magic ultimately clinched the win for us. Wilf’s goal was absolutely superb and deserved to win any game, but what satisfied me even more was that he used the heckling and booing from the home fans as inspiration to quieten them down in the best way possible. He is becoming one of the league’s most dangerous players so he will be fouled more and more by opposing defenders, but if he channels that frustration positively into scoring goals like the one last weekend, then he’ll become an even better player which is what both he and the club really want. I have to also give him credit for battling back from the groin injury that kept him out of the Southampton game so quickly. It could have kept him out for a lot longer, but he was so anxious to get out on the field that the doctors and physios couldn’t keep him back. After three league defeats in a row, it was good that we had options to shuffle the team around and add some fresh faces in Jordan Ayew and Cheikhou

Kouyaté, who along with Max Meyer have settled in very quickly to provide me with more options going into the next set of fixtures. We were also extremely glad to have James Tomkins back from injury to take up his position alongside Mamadou Sakho in defence. That home defeat against Southampton was our first against a team outside of last season’s top six since we played them in my first game over a year ago, so it shows how much our form here at Selhurst Park has improved in that time. We want to continue to make this a very difficult place for teams to visit and so we’ll be aiming to start a new run of form at Newcastle’s expense this afternoon. They were handed a very difficult start to the season by the fixture computer, so we cannot take their league position too seriously at the moment, and we are preparing for a very tough game against an organised and skilful Newcastle team. On that subject I would like to welcome Rafael Benitez, his players and staff to SE25 today, all of whom will be eager to get their first win of the campaign, so we’ll have to be on our guard and perform at our best level to hopefully clinch our first home victory of 2018/19 for you all. Enjoy the game!

I’M CONFIDENT THAT IF WE PLAY HOW WE KNOW TO PLAY, THEN WE WILL TAKE SOME POINTS FROM THE GAME

THE CAPTAIN 07

it was a very successful trip We are heading into this game against Newcastle United on the back of two very different performances against Southampton and Huddersfield Town.

The Southampton game was a strange one. We prepared our tactics during the week and then in the last 10 minutes of the last training session Wilf got injured which meant we had to change the system, so maybe that maybe affected the team a little bit and possibly meant we weren’t able to give our best performance. It was probably our worst for a long time. I think the international break might have come at a good time for us because we had two weeks to be all together and do more tactical work than we usually do, and because we got the win at Huddersfield we can look back and say it was beneficial. We knew it would be a hard game because they are physically very strong and like to press right throughout the 90 minutes, so it wasn’t an easy win. I believe we deserved it though, especially as we had good chances when we were 1-0 up. We had a little bit of luck when they hit the post, but I think we were the better team. It was an amazing goal from Wilf; we know how dangerous he is from the wing, and the manager recognises that and put him there on the left and he showed why he is one of the best in the league. In the last five or 10 minutes it was hard to defend the lead, but we have plenty of experience and knew how to manage it. We didn’t seem to lose anything; we kept our shape and our heads, so we did very well. For any club in this league to beat Huddersfield at their own stadium will be a tough ask, but we took

PALACE

v

NEWCASTLE UNITED

the points from there so we can say it was a very successful trip. We also managed to stop a run of three defeats in a row, which was especially good away from home, and allowed us to prepare for today’s game in peace and give ourselves the best opportunity to get the win and six points from six. I expect a very tough game because I respect Newcastle as a team and their manager a lot. They didn’t have much luck at the start of the season because they have played four of the top six teams and they lost, but there were games where they should have taken some points. That to me means they are strong and have quality and organisation. If you look at the table they might not have many points, but when you look at their opponents you understand why and I am sure that if we want to win, we need to be better than in our previous matches. We haven’t won at Selhurst Park yet this season, but I don’t feel any extra pressure. I’m confident that if we play how we know to play, then we will take some points from the game, but we have to show that on the pitch. Make some noise!

THE CHAIRMAN 09

make today a day to remember Welcome to the players, staff and directors of Newcastle United to Selhurst Park today, and as always to our fans. It’s fantastic to have you all here for yet another sell-out.

Since my last notes, we lost to Southampton but bounced back straight away with a big win at Huddersfield Town. As I’ve often said before, the margins are immensely tight in this league, so holding our nerve under severe late pressure away from home is extremely pleasing. We also launched our new third kit last weekend – the Palace Yellow Fade. It’s always been a lucky colour for us, and I think we’ve cracked it this year on the kits and they’re possibly the best we’ve ever had. The work has already started on next season’s editions, but these will be hard to beat. We recently announced a new role for Dave Reddington as first-team coach, and a new contract for James McArthur. The opportunity for Dave arose because Steven Reid decided to take a break from football, but he made a huge contribution to the club last season and we wish him well. As for Dave, he joined our academy 14 years ago, with a spell at Watford in the middle of that period. This opportunity to work under Roy and Ray is richly deserved and another great example of the development and pathways that exists for coaches and players at the club. Dave is a hugely enthusiastic guy, and I wish him all the very best in the role. James is the epitome of a model professional and a team player, setting a brilliant example to others. He rarely grabs the headlines, but is someone who teammates and fans hold in the highest regard and so

PALACE

we’re delighted that James has extended his time in south London with us. I’d also like to congratulate Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his England under-21 debut during the recent international break. There is nothing more rewarding for everyone at the academy and training ground than seeing a player like Aaron develop through the ranks, and then get an international call-up. It’s now up to Aaron to work even harder to establish himself in the Palace starting XI each week, and the international caps will surely follow. Behind the scenes, we continue to try to improve all areas of your matchday experience, and it’s been really pleasing to welcome back many familiar and friendly faces to our Premium lounges as hosts, including Clinton Ambrose, Darren Ambrose, Sasa Curcic, Neil Shipperley and Jim Cannon. These guys span 40 years of Palace history, and it’s really important to have them all still involved with the club. If we win today, it would be our 100th victory in the Premier League and by coincidence, our 200th in the top-flight. Let’s remind the world just how special the Selhurst Park atmosphere is by each and every one of us throwing our support behind Roy and the team, and hopefully reaching those landmarks to make today a day to remember. Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United // Saturday 22nd September // Selhurst Park

Today's game Palace will be looking to chalk up their 100th victory in the Premier League, and their 200th in the top-flight, against Newcastle United this afternoon, who are attempting to put a tough start behind them. The Magpies were handed a daunting fixture list to kick off the campaign, and while giving all of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal a game before losing 2-1, they will still be disappointed with their points total after a late Kenedy penalty miss saw them squander victory at Cardiff City. It is the first time since 1999 that Newcastle have started with four defeats out of five, but they will be hoping that their fine recent record against the Eagles will spur them on to claim a first three-point haul. To do so, Rafael Benitez’s team will have to end a run of one win from their last 11 games away from home. The Eagles meanwhile are aiming to avoid becoming just the second team in English top-flight history to lose their opening three home league games in consecutive seasons. Coincidently, Newcastle are the only team to achieve this unwanted feat in 1986/87 and 1987/88. However, Wilfried Zaha’s excellent goal at Huddersfield Town has boosted morale in SE25, with the red-hot attacker having scored eight in his last 10 matches as he aims to net a third career strike against the Magpies.

Jordan Ayew has netted twice in four top-flight appearances against Newcastle, one with Aston Villa in December 2015 and one with Swansea City in January 2018.

Newsroom PALACE LINE-UP FOR 2018/19 PHOTOCALL On Monday afternoon, Roy Hodgson, his Palace squad and the backroom staff all amassed at the training ground in Beckenham for their annual photocall. The traditional early-season photo, which has been a staple of the club’s history since they were formed in 1905, captured the entire Eagles first-team squad apart from the injured Christian Benteke, as well as Sullay Kaikai and Jonny Williams who were on under-23s duty. Despite that, 23 players are featured in the photograph including some new faces for the first time such as Alexander Sørloth, Jordan Ayew, Max Meyer and Cheikhou Kouyaté, while Julian Speroni was featuring in his 15th such Palace picture! Plenty of behind-the-scenes footage was shot by Palace TV including the innovative use of a drone, and has been uploaded to the channel so you can see how the image was put together. If you want a copy of it yourself, the photo is available to download for your desktop computer or tablet background by heading to cpfc.co.uk/1819wallpaper and following the instructions, while hard copies will be available to purchase in the club shop at Selhurst Park soon.

McARTHUR SIGNS NEW DEAL James McArthur has signed a contract extension with the Eagles that will see the 32-time capped Scotland international remain at Selhurst Park until the end of the 2020/21 season. McArthur has played 136 games for Palace, netting 16 times, since his switch to south London four years ago from Wigan Athletic, putting him fifth in the club’s all-time Premier League appearance makers list behind Joel Ward, Jason Puncheon, Wilfried Zaha and Damien Delaney. McArthur said: “I’m very pleased to commit myself to the club for another three years. It’s great, and I’m excited about the challenges that come. "The manager has brought the best out of me from last season, and I really enjoy playing under him. We have a very good squad where there is competition for places all over the field, and I think we’ll get stronger and stronger.”

Baggies trip in Carabao Cup After beating Swansea City in the last round, Palace will travel to West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night for a Carabao Cup third round clash. Tickets are on general sale for the game, priced at £10 for adults, £5 for under-18s and £3 for under-11s, but prices will increase by £5 on the day of the game.

Under-23s fixture changed The Development League fixture against Colchester United, scheduled for Monday 24th September at Selhurst Park, has been postponed. The game will now be played on 12th November at the Beckenham Training Ground.

PALACE LAUNCH THIRD KIT Last weekend, Palace surprised their travelling fans by walking out to play Huddersfield Town in the Premier League wearing their new all-yellow third strip. Now available to buy in-store and online, the limited edition ‘Palace Yellow Fade’ is the club’s third kit with new partners Puma. The shirt, shorts and socks are dominated by a vibrant 'cyber' yellow, and the shirt has an iconic red and blue vertical stripe with a fade effect, much like the home strip. Palace last wore yellow during the 2016/17 season, and is seen as a lucky colour by many fans having been worn whilst clinching promotion to the Premier League in the 2004 play-off final against West Ham United, and in the unforgettable win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the 2013 play-off semi-final.

Marathon March deadline extended Because of demand, the deadline to register for the Palace for Life Foundation Marathon March has been extended to Sunday 23rd September. A host of legends including Andrew Johnson, Mark Bright and Neil Shipperley, Palace Ladies squad members, fans and even Steve Parish will all be taking part in the 26.2 mile walk from Selhurst Park to Trafalgar Square in support of the club’s official charity on Saturday 13th October. Head to palaceforlife.org for all the details.

Aveiro signs first pro deal Last week, academy player Brandon Aveiro signed his first professional contract with the club on his 17th birthday, having been on Palace’s books since 2009. The attacking midfielder has been with the club since his eighth birthday and put pen to paper in the presence of Sporting Director, Dougie Freedman.

One of the Premier League’s best-kept secrets may have hit the headlines this week when James McArthur extended his stay with Crystal Palace until 2021, but as he tells Jonathon Rogers, he is keen to once again return to obscurity and do what he does best – play out of his skin for the Eagles.

JAMES M c ARTHUR 17

The past few days have seen James McArthur’s name and face splashed all over the sports news after he inked a two-year contract extension, but it isn’t something that would have sat too comfortably with the unassuming Scotsman. A fresh deal for one of the league’s most underrated players means McArthur’s efforts have once again been recognised in south London, but outside of Croydon - and perhaps his native Glasgow - the midfielder’s low profile allows him to live the life he desires. “I do much prefer being under the radar – in football and in life,” he said. “I would rather walk down the street without anyone knowing me, rather than having loads of people surrounding me. As time goes on and you get more experienced, you find that you don’t really need things like social media outside of your own little bubble. I prefer to be spending time with my family and I don’t need to be on social media checking what’s happened to someone else’s life when I’m very happy with my own. “Headlines really don’t bother me. I’m here to play for Crystal Palace and help my teammates and my mates, and that’s my life. It wouldn’t bother me if I scored a hat-trick and Wilf or someone scored one and they get the headlines; that actually suits me - not that I’ll ever score three in a game mind you!” Three goals in a game might have eluded him, but the three years that McArthur has pledged to remain in SE25 for will have brought just as much joy to Palace fans as the former Hamilton Academical and Wigan Athletic man looks to spend the silhouette years of a typically understated career in SE25.

"

He may have lifted the FA Cup with the Latics and won 32 Scotland caps, but it is his association with the Eagles that looks set to stand the test of time when his unflashy boots are hung up one day, and if he gets his wish they could well be on a peg in the new Main Stand at Selhurst Park a few years from now. Chatting about his new deal, he said: “It was a very easy decision to stay. When the club wanted to sit down and talk about giving me a new deal then I was delighted to tie my future down, and it is a great relief to get it done. I want to finish my career here; it’s been a great club for myself and I feel that I’ve done well for them and they’ve been the same for myself as well. “I don’t feel as though I’m part of the furniture here. The club has a lot of history and players come and go, but I’ve been here for quite a number of years when it comes to footballing terms. A lot of players move on quickly but I’m still here playing and I’m glad to be here for another three. “I love being at the club. It’s a great bunch of boys and a good manager, and the club is trying to go places and I want to keep being a part of that. It’s been a big change from when I first came here to now, and hopefully we can keep progressing and get better.” That is something that can be said about McArthur’s ever-improving displays in red and blue which led to the no-brainer decision for the powersthat-be to lock down his indispensable services until he reaches the age of 33. A model professional capable of playing anywhere between the base of the defence and the focal point of attack, he often covers more distance than the rest of

the 21 players that he shares the pitch with and rarely puts a foot wrong - whether it is mopping up in front of his own goal or coolly tucking home a poacher’s finish 80 yards further downfield, sometimes within seconds of each other. Would it be fair to assume that Palace fans are witnessing the pinnacle of Macca’s playing days? “I think only other people can judge whether these have been the best years of my career, but they’ve definitely been the most enjoyable, especially staying in the Premier League. When you’re playing and you’re winning games that’s obviously when you enjoy your football most, and hopefully that shows on the field.” While he might be characteristically modest and wouldn’t dream of admitting it on the record, the stats certainly highlight that his influence is as crucial to the Eagles as Wilfried Zaha’s. While much has been made recently of the Eagles’ woes without Wilf, it is also true that no league wins were recorded without McArthur in their ranks during the whole of the 2017/18 league campaign. In fact, since he signed his first ever Selhurst deal just over four years ago, there have been just four occasions Palace have tasted Premier League victory in the 27 matches when he has been absent. When the number 18 is listed on the teamsheet, Palace average 1.25 points per game as opposed to 0.8 points without McArthur, and the team also score more goals (1.2 per game vs 0.9 without) and concede less (1.4 vs 1.6) when the Scot features.

"

I HAVE DEFINITELY CHANGED AS A PLAYER THOUGH SINCE I’VE BEEN HERE. UNDER ALAN PARDEW I STARTED TO CHANGE A LITTLE AND BECOME MORE ATTACKING, WHICH I’D NEVER DONE BEFORE "

"

THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST COMPETITIVE MIDFIELD WE’VE HAD SINCE I’VE BEEN HERE "

JAMES MCARTHUR 21

His 127 appearances sees him sit fifth in the club’s all-time Premier League appearance makers list, and his goal output has increased year-on-year for the past three campaigns. Unsurprisingly, for someone not seeking glory or validation, he was blissfully unaware of these feats. “It is good to know that the team win more games when I’m in the team rather than when I’m out of it, but the stats aren’t something I pay great attention to. “I have definitely changed as a player though since I’ve been here. Under Alan Pardew I started to change a little and become more attacking, which I’d never done before. I’d either be a sitting midfielder or playing boxto-box, but under Pardew I started playing in central midfield and then last year I got moved to the right, so I think that my game has progressed. “I just go in and try to help the team by playing in any position, because as long as I’m playing then I’m happy and wherever I’m told to play I’ll do it to the best of my ability.” McArthur is once again playing down a notable achievement. Last season saw him reach a career-high seven goals in a season, which is an excellent return for someone whose early career saw him hit just 10 in five top-flight seasons either side of Hadrian’s Wall. His reinvention as a goal-hungry midfielder came during the latter games of Pardew’s tenure in the 2016/17 campaign when he forged an unlikely strike partnership with Christian Benteke, but since then he has developed a knack of arriving in the perfect place at the perfect time to finish off moves. So what was the secret behind his transition? “When you’re playing all the time in an attacking role and you get used to it, you become more confident because the manager is continuing to show trust in you,” he revealed. “Pardew and the manager we have now have got the best out of me because they've trusted and relied on me, and kept me in the team whenever we hadn’t been playing well. When you become someone who can be trusted you get

PALACE

v

NEWCASTLE UNITED

confidence, and when you play with the type of attacking players we’ve got, you’re going to get a lot of chances. “When you get asked to play somewhere new, the manager already feels you’ll know the position because of its virtues, and how to play there. You then listen to your teammates, such as last year when I was on the right I’d listen to Andros who would teach me when to tuck in or get wide. Over time most players know how to play in most positions so when you get told to play in a new one, it’s not really a problem.” That versatility, calmness and adaptation has reaped rewards for McArthur who is now firmly a fixture in Roy Hodgson’s side. Only Zaha has played more Premier League games for the club since Macca’s acquisition in September 2014, despite a wealth of midfield talent such as Mile Jedinak, Joe Ledley, Jason Puncheon, Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic all fighting for starting spots. Ultimately, all have been paired with McArthur at some point, but following the summer arrivals of Max Meyer and Cheikhou Kouyaté he believes the competition in the Eagles engine room is as heated as ever, which only fuels his desire to become even better. “This is probably the most competitive midfield we’ve had since I’ve been here,” he mused. “Last year was tough as well because Jairo [Riedewald] signed and we already had Jason Puncheon, Yohan, myself and Luka, so that was very difficult as well, but obviously we’ve added Max and Cheikhou now so there’s even stronger competition. “If you want to keep progressing and competing, you’re going to find that this squad and the league keeps getting stronger and if you stand still, you’ll get left behind. Everyone at the club is striving to get better and with that, we’re signing better players.” Despite the new faces, an ever-improving McArthur’s signature on the dotted line could be as vital a bit of business when it comes to the Eagles’ fortunes over the next three years.

100 Years of the Crystal Palace Programme

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

Part III

1928 - 1934

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1928/29 The programme was given an upheaval during the summer, starting with the printers who were now P. B. Beddow of Anerley but there were only eight pages and blue paper was utilised throughout. The cost remained at 2d and the reduction in the number of pages came about because there was a dearth of advertising. The cover page just contained the club name and officials, and included a review of recent games that spread over to page two and a piece about the visitors. Page three contained a new player-based feature and was followed by the half-time scoreboard grid and the only advert for Hewitt’s of Church Street, Croydon. As usual the projected team details filled the centre pages, while the back page contained travel details from local Southern Railway stations in connection with home matchdays, for which they issued cheaper third-class return tickets between noon and 3pm for a Saturday game. The programme above is from the home game against Southend United in April that was won 3-2.

1929/30, 1930/31 and 1931/32 For these three seasons the programme reverted to its previous format of an outer cover, this time in deep red depicting an outline of an enhanced Selhurst Park with raised terracing, and followed by 20 pages of printed material all very similar in style. Advertising returned to fill more than half the pages but altered from small adverts to half-pagers, while there was another new printers - this time the Modern Press of Oakfield Road in Croydon. The written content began to show a different approach with headings such as “From The Editor’s Desk” and the Supporters’ Club now had a section. “News From All Quarters” contained football snippets from around the country and was followed by a cartoon that usually referred to Palace's opponents. The team line-ups were housed in the middle and more reading came with a section of jokes titled “While You Wait”, while there would also be details of the music played by The Crystal Palace Band. The remainder had the usual format of tables, fixtures and results and train travel to Selhurst Park.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

1932/33

1933/34

There was a new design to the outer cover that retained the same measurements but had an orange hue, with the programme now titled The Glaziers Journal. The elimination of virtually all advertising saw it reduced it in size to eight pages, with printing now overseen by Abbey Road Printing Service of Catford. “Tales of the Glaziers” as told by ‘The Diamond’ took up two pages and contained all the relevant news about the club’s recent games, and one page was given over to the portrait of a Palace player with notes about his career. Some editions contained notes about our opponents while others had a photograph from a recent home game. Fixtures and tables took up a page and there was also room to show our progress in the London Professional Midweek League and the London Challenge Cup. For the first part of the season, each programme carried a purposely made mistake for which two tickets for the centre stand would be given to the senders of the first two postcards correctly identifying it!

A similar format was retained by the club for the following campaign in the Third Division South, but for the first time an action photograph was displayed on the front cover portraying a goalkeeper diving by a post, with The Glaziers Journal moniker dropped. The back page showed a map of the Southern Electric trains of south London serving the three local stations but this service was soon discontinued. There appears to be no consistency with the presentation of the eight pages but the regular “Tales of the Glaziers” by ‘The Diamond’ was always there, as well as the usual statistical matters and team line-ups. The Crystal Palace Band's playlist also remained. The remainder of the programme changed from week to week with news, notes on our visitors or a football topic. One of the early-season issues argued ‘Should Women Support Football?’, with the club’s attitude being “Why Not?” and offered them a reduction of £1 on a centre-stand season ticket which was about 33% off, and from the new year matchday entry for female fans was half-price.

When Palace Stunned The Cup Kings

One of the most famous meetings between today’s opponents came in 1907 when non-league Palace stunned the country’s biggest club at the time to produce one of the FA Cup’s biggest giant-killings. Occurring over 20 years before the first television broadcast means it doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves, so here is the tale of that famous afternoon on Tyneside 111 years ago.

In every season, the usual FA Cup giant-killing showreels are dusted off recalling the biggest shocks in the competition’s history. Newcastle fans of a certain age will shudder at the mere mention of Hereford United, but actually perhaps their biggest cup slaying came at the hands of Palace in just the second season of the south Londoners’ existence. Then struggling in the Southern League Division One, the Glaziers only made it into the first round draw of the 1906/07 competition by beating Rotherham County 4-0 in a preliminary tie, held at Stamford Bridge because the Crystal Palace grounds – the-then home of the final – were hosting a rugby union international, and Palace's reward was a trip to St James’ Park to take on England’s most dominant team of the time. The Magpies were on their way to their second First Division title in three years, and had reached the cup final in each of the previous two campaigns. They

were unbeaten at home in 14 months and boasted a team packed with internationals, so were deemed to have the easiest tie of the round against a fledgling non-league side. Palace though boasted a number of players from the north-east thanks to manager Jack Robson’s time in charge of Middlesbrough, including Horace Astley, Charlie Wallace and goalkeeper Bob Hewitson, while Dick Harker and Dickie Roberts had previously represented the Magpies. These roots proved crucial as the squad were able to find free overnight accommodation, avoiding a six-hour journey on the morning of the match. The Palace skipper that afternoon had also previously played for Newcastle. Looking to Wilf to find a way to victory isn’t a recent Eagles phenomenon; it can be traced right back to the club’s formation when Wilfred Innerd arrived from Tyneside, who was made

the club captain in time to face his former team on 12th January 1907. Despite the cold and wet conditions, 28,000 expectant fans poured into St James’ Park including no more than three visiting supporters. Palace, wearing their claret and blue strip donated by Aston Villa, were given a warm welcome onto the pitch by the natives who soon got nervy when Roberts had a goal controversially disallowed after 20 minutes. After Newcastle’s James Howie also suffered the same fate, just before half-time Astley managed to get past a full-back and played a one-two with George Woodger before thumping an excellent shot past the great Scottish international shot-stopper Jimmy Lawrence to snatch a shock lead. In the second half, incredibly the margin could have been even greater with Lawrence required to twice deny Woodger who also fired over the bar. However,

PALACE

v

the final six minutes saw the Glaziers battle on with 10 men when Charlie Ryan had to be carried off injured, but some fine late goalkeeping by Hewitson secured the victory and a standing ovation from the incredulous home crowd. The upset astounded the nation, with the Athletic News stating that it would "be many a long day before the glorious victory will be forgotten" and the Penny Illustrated Paper declared the result "to the utter astonishment of the football world". Two Palace players made straight for the train and were greeted at Crystal Palace at midnight by the Upper Norwood temperance band and 2,000 fans, which was nothing compared to the scenes the following Monday evening when the remainder of the squad returned. The band were again waiting as well as twice as many wellwishers, who gathered Innerd and carried him shoulderhigh in a torchlight procession down Anerley hill!

THE MAGPIES FOUNDED: 1892

FOUR ENGLISH LEAGUE TITLES

The manager The Spaniard has transformed the Magpies’ fortunes since he was unable to prevent them returning to the Championship in 2016, masterminding their promotion as champions at the first attempt in his first full season in charge before clinching a remarkable top-half finish last term despite a shoestring budget. Benitez is one of the most decorated managers in world football, having managed giants such as Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, lifting 13 trophies in the process.

Club legend The Geordie hitman returned to his hometown team in the summer of 1996 as one of the world’s greatest players, having fired Blackburn Rovers to a Premier League title and winning the Golden Boot at Euro 96. A world-record £15 million brought him to St James’ Park where he spent a decade leading the Magpies’ line, netting an unsurpassed 206 goals which also saw him become the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer with 260 to his name. Having briefly managed the club, in 2016 a statue of him was unveiled outside St James' Park.

Shelvey is nearing a century of Newcastle appearances and his form at the back end of last season prompted calls for him to add to the six England caps handed his way by Roy Hodgson. The midfielder became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player when he debuted aged 16 years and 59 days old, and was soon snapped up by Hodgson for Liverpool where he spent three seasons before moving to Swansea City. Things you didn't know... ABOUT NEWCASTLE

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Newcastle United.

Newcastle had lost the 1908 FA Cup final to Wolves, and their club photographer Gladstone Adams faced a long journey back north from Crystal Palace Park. Despite it being April, it began to snow and on his drive home he had to stop a number of times to clear the windscreen. It was during this journey that he came up with a eureka moment - a device to clear the screen. Though he patented his invention of the windscreen wiper, it was never made and the invention was eventually credited to an American.

The Magpies weren’t the first team to play on the site of St James’ Park originally, an outfit called Rangers FC occupied the area in 1880. The club left two years later and it wasn’t until 1886 that Newcastle West End moved in and installed an eight-foot fence around the pitch, turning it into a football ground for the first time. West End went out of business in 1892 and were effectively merged into city rivals Newcastle East End, who then changed their name to Newcastle United.

The Magpies nickname, of course, comes from the famous black and white kit. However before 1894 the team played in a variety of colours, including the red and white of East End but also bitter rivals Sunderland! It wasn’t until 1920 that the distinctive black shorts and socks were established, with very little variation ever since.

CHRIS WATERS 51

United share an English league record with Stockport County for the biggest win: a thumping 13-0 victory over Newport County in the Second Division in 1946, which could have been more had Newcastle not missed an early penalty. Len Shackleton netted a double hat-trick during the rout, while a young Jackie Milburn also got on the scoresheet twice.

Continuing the sharing theme, the Magpies share the record of the highest Premier League finish by a newly-promoted club. The Toon finished a magnificent third in 1993/94 on 77 points, behind Blackburn Rovers and champions Manchester United. The only other side to achieve this was Nottingham Forest, who hit the same heights the following campaign.

With a capacity of over 52,000, St James’ Park is already one of the largest football grounds in England with a loyal support base to match. United were the first club in the world to house one million fans in a season during 1946/47, and the first to average over 50,000 supporters in league games the following campaign.

Remarkably, you have to go back to 2005 to find the Magpies’ record transfer fee when they spent £16 million on Michael Owen, bringing him back to England from Real Madrid. The former Liverpool striker scored 26 goals in 72 games before departing for Manchester United on a free transfer in 2009.

Both camps

In each edition, we will try and form the best starting line-up possible comprised of players who have represented both the Eagles and today’s opponents, and see which club comes out on top when it comes to appearances and goals.

GK: Jack Alderson – CPFC 205/0 NUFC 1/0 Alderson played just once for the Magpies in 1913 but it was at Palace where he starred, playing in their first ever Football League campaign and representing England once.

CM: Yohan Cabaye – CPFC 109/10 NUFC 93/17 The Frenchman oozed class as he helped Newcastle to a fifth-place finish in 2011/12, and then continued to impress at Palace before departing this summer.

RB: Wilfred Innerd – CPFC 133/7 NUFC 3/0 The Geordie barely featured for his hometown team, and would end up captaining Palace as the Southern League side shocked the Magpies in the FA Cup in 1907.

LW: Wayne Routledge – CPFC 123/10 NUFC 36/3 The Eagles academy product won promotion to the Premier League with both Palace and Newcastle, as he spent 18 months in the north-east between 2010 and 2011.

CB: Peter Ramage – CPFC 67/4 NUFC 69/0 The centre-back was a member of the Eagles squad that won promotion to the Premier League in 2012/13, having come through the ranks of his hometown team Newcastle.

CF: Dwight Gayle – CPFC 74/26 NUFC 71/29 After swapping places with Townsend, Gayle fired Newcastle to the Championship title by scoring 23 goals, having previously netted some memorable strikes for the Eagles.

CB: Andy Thorn – CPFC 168/7 NUFC 43/3 Thorn joined Newcastle after Wimbledon’s FA Cup success, but after a season he joined Palace, playing in the 1990 final.

CF: Wyn Davies – CPFC 3/0 NUFC 216/53 The Welshman was a member of the last Newcastle side to life a major trophy – the 1969 European Fairs Cup – and spent a short time on loan at Palace in 1975.

LB: Kenny Sansom – CPFC 197/4 NUFC 24/0 A two-time Palace Player of the Year, Sansom was a key part of the ‘Team of the Eighties’ that won promotion in 1978/79 but struggled during his year on Tyneside. RW: Andros Townsend – CPFC 85/5 NUFC 13/4 Despite the winger’s best efforts he was relegated with the Magpies in 2016, before moving to Palace the following summer where he has remained a regular. CM: Darren Ambrose – CPFC 126/39 NUFC 56/6 Ambrose shined sporadically at Newcastle under Sir Bobby Robson, but he will never be forgotten for his exploits in SE25 during the 2009/10 survival season.

Mel

Blyth

You arrived at Palace in the summer of 1968, how did the move come about? Arthur Rowe came up to watch a game and Ronnie Ashman, the manager of Scunthorpe at the time, told me. I had read a few things in the local press of the interest but hadn’t had any contact until just before the game when Ashman’s actual words were: "Palace are here and they are keeping an eye on you." I had never been down to London and it was a real feeling of going into the unknown. I had grown up in Norwich before playing for a while in Scunthorpe and then this opportunity came up, so my head was in the clouds. As soon as I spoke to Bert Head, he told me what my contract was going to be, why it would be a good move and to be honest it all happened very quickly.

get to their level as they were setting the standards for what was needed. You played in a couple of positions in the season’s early weeks, how did that come about? We won on the opening day down at Cardiff City with me playing in a forward position which was new because I had always played at the back, but the manager wanted to see me up front due to my pace. Even though I scored

During pre-season, what did Head say were the main goals of the months ahead? Bert said to me he was buying certain players with the aim to get the club up to the First Division, but for me that kind of ambition was a lot to take in as I had come from a Third Division side. That must have been some sort of record as I had played in the Third, Second and then the First Division within the space of 18 months! I had been told that Steve Kember, John Jackson and David Payne were the golden boys and I got on well with those three, and my whole attitude was I had to

PALACE

THE GLORY YEARS 57

What are your biggest recollections of that season 50 years on? I have such fond memories of that period. I will always look back on it as how playing in the different positions really helped me read the game better, and knowing from the start that I had to up my game if I was going be part of such a successful group of players. I had come from non-league to the First Division in such a short space of time, and it’s nice I will always be remembered as part of a group of lads who reached the top-flight for the first time. in that game, it wasn’t a role I would say I enjoyed playing in. The change in position did come about though when I turned up for training one day and was told to play alongside John McCormick at the back in a practice game and I never looked back. I said to Jonny that I would keep him in the first-team for the next five years now he had me playing alongside him - he didn’t take too kindly to that comment but we got on well! Palace ended the season on a run of 16 games unbeaten, when did you start believing that promotion could be achieved? When we beat the eventual league winners Derby County at their place in March, I said if this is the best that they can perform against us then I thought we would have a chance of winning the league. Everyone in the dressing room started to have that belief that we could achieve something, and the lads were champing at the bit to make sure that we would create a bit of history by making the First Division for the first time.

T

erry Long’s biggest disappointment in a 432-match career with Crystal Palace was that he played in every Division bar the First. Long, now assistant manager at Millwall, had another disappointment at The Den on Saturday when he saw some timely words of warning completely ignored. Long and his boss George Petchey, another former Selhurst Park stalwart, fed the Millwall players with this message during training in the week: “Don’t let Ken Sansom catch you out with one of his long throws.” As Long said: “We worked on it, talked about it and, when Sansom put the throw in the match itself, fell for it.” It was not the decisive blow – that had come earlier – but it would help to make certain that Palace would slip easily into the loftiest perch of all in the Second Division. Like all derbies the match was not as flowing as it might have been and like all these needle affairs things boiled over beyond reason at times. Inconsistent referee Reg Robinson saw some happenings, missed many worse and the 11,693 crowd – small for such an occasion – became more than a little vexed by him. Three Millwall players, Dave Mehmet, Jon Moore and Trevor Lee, went into the book and Palace’s Peter Nicholas followed for the second time this season – for a bad tackle on Phil Walker. Irate Millwall supporters were vehement that

the book should have been brandished when Mehmet ended up in a heap, a happening that escaped the notice of most, including Mr Robinson, as play had moved upfield. Mehmet had indulged in some dubious tackling on his own account before he was brought down – he was booked for a wild challenge on Nicky Chatterton – and ended up being stretchered off with what was believed to be a chipped bone but turned out to be a bad bruise.

PALACE

looked harmless but Cuff pushed it into the roof of the net rather than over the top. Hilaire and Chatterton missed further chances and Cannon nearly brought down the goal with a crossbarrattling drive, but Millwall held out before two in two minutes finished them off.

Palace skipper Jim Cannon was abused by the crowd for the incident and is surprised by it. “There were three players around him but I was not involved in any way,” he said. The other Millwall players booked were Jon Moore for an illegal tackle on Vince Hilaire and Trevor Lee for felling Dave Swindlehurst. Not a garden party atmosphere, as you can see, not helped when Palace goalkeeper John Burridge found himself on the wrong end of a brick. Yes there was some football too! Palace showed the skills, were much the sharper and quicker and generally far too organised for a struggling Millwall. Palace’s defence was too certain for a powder-puff Millwall attack and Millwall had their hands full with Nicholas, Murphy and the elusive and often brilliant Hilaire, smashed down time and again and coming up smiling to continue the battle. Murphy started it off in the 19th minute – courtesy of Millwall ‘keeper Pat Cuff. Murphy’s long range poke

The first came in the 73rd minute when Sansom’s throw was back-headed by Hilaire and Nicky Chatterton strode in to head home. Then Nicholas was given what seemed an eternity to control a Swindlehurst pass and place his shot inch-perfectly. Millwall were done and only Donaldson’s goal-line intervention prevented a sparkling move being finished off by Paul Hinshelwood. Season

uring the summer of 1988 it slowly began to dawn on supporters that for the first time in 15 years the name of Jim Cannon would not be featuring in the team. There had been no indication to the fans that Cannon’s contract would be renewed, and so after 660 first-team games he bowed out of Selhurst Park. The only other player to depart was the versatile Tony Finnigan, latterly playing at right-back, but his replacement was already to hand in John Pemberton. Summer signings included Jeff Hopkins – a £250,000 signing from Fulham – while goalkeeper Brian Parkin came from Crewe Alexandra, midfielder Dave Madden arrived from Reading and striker Steve Claridge was plucked from non-league Weymouth having made a few league appearances with Bournemouth. The opening day fixtures of Saturday 27th August handed Palace a trip to Swindon Town but this was postponed as ground alterations had not been completed, so it wasn’t until the penultimate day of August that Steve Coppell’s team finally began their Second Division campaign against Chelsea. A typical feisty derby ensued that ended inevitably at 1-1, with the Blues taking the lead early on before Neil Redfearn steered home in a goalmouth scramble midway through the first half, but the visitors were awarded a dubious penalty just before the break which Gordon Durie blasted way over the

bar. At the time Palace had struggled to tempt fans through the Selhurst turnstiles, but the attendance that night of 17,490 was their third highest in the previous four seasons. A setback followed four days later on 3rd September with a 2-0 home defeat by Watford as injuries hit the defence, meaning Geoff Thomas was forced to play as a makeshift centre-half. The remaining four league games that month all ended in draws, and the first of these at Walsall witnessed the first games for Parkin and Hopkins who both were probably satisfied with the goalless game. THE GLORY YEARS 61

The Sq

The middle of September saw the Eagles’ bogey team of that era visit in Shrewsbury Town, and only a late equaliser from Ian Wright in front of just over 7,000 spectators prevented the Shrews returning to Shropshire with all three points. That was followed by a midweek match at struggling Sunderland where for the first time all season, Palace went in front when Gary O’Reilly scored after just five minutes, but the Black Cats conjured up an equaliser midway through the second half. It was a blustery Fratton Park that welcomed Coppell’s side to face a Pompey team high up in the table and the hosts took the lead with a 15th minute penalty awarded for handball by captain Thomas. Fortunately O’Reilly was forging a fine partnership in defence with Hopkins that restricted opportunities for the south-coast club’s forwards and in the second half the conditions allowed the Eagles to dictate more of the encounter with Wright grabbing another equaliser. The stuttering start meant that after their opening six games the Eagles found themselves floundering in mid-table, but the second round of the League Cup PALACE

paired Palace with Swindon and the first of the twolegged tie was at the County Ground on Tuesday 27th September; one of six encounters with the Robins through the season. A wet and windy evening witnessed the Eagles notch their opening victory of the season with Mark Bright and Wright getting on the scoresheet together for the first time in 10 months to take a one-goal advantage back to Selhurst Park.

MICHAEL’S STORY Michael arrived in the UK from the Congo when he was 12-years-old and was a quiet young man with a passion for football. However, he soon fell in with the wrong crowd and was drawn into increasingly anti-social behaviour and had several run-ins with the police. “I would hang around in Croydon town centre with my friends looking for excitement which sometimes led to trouble with other young people and, in some cases, the police. I knew we shouldn’t be doing some of the things we were doing, but we were bored and just needed something to do,” he explained. This all started to change in 2015 when a friend told Michael about the Premier League Kicks (PL Kicks) football sessions being offered by the Foundation in Selhurst. Through PL Kicks, we run free sports sessions across south London for hard-to-reach young people, such as Michael, between the ages of 11 and 18. These sessions combine high-quality football coaching with other positive activities in sport, the arts and media. “As a young person living in Croydon sometimes it doesn’t feel safe, but when I attend PL Kicks, the coaches are respected by everyone and create a fun and safe environment,” Michael continued. Three years on, Michael has moved away from the circles he was previously in and avoids negative behaviour and gang activity. He has made friends with people he would never have spoken to before, developing good relationships with his coaches and other young people. Michael Lacey, our Lead Coach at PL Kicks Community League added: “I have seen a massive improvement in his attitude and behaviour. Having

PALACE

v

played regular football over the last couple of years, Michael has developed strong leadership qualities.” Michael’s mum has also noticed this positive transformation: “I am so happy he has found the PL Kicks programme because he loves football and loves attending. He has been able to stay out of trouble and be in a safe and positive environment.” Michael’s confidence has improved to such an extent that he now attends a football study college five days a week in Battersea and is working towards becoming either a personal trainer or PE teacher. He hopes to become involved with semi-professional football one day and fulfil his ultimate dream of working in the sports industry.

Signing my first professional contract on my 17th birthday was a dream come true. I’ve been at Palace since I was eight-years-old so to sign my first contract was an unbelievable feeling. I think now when I play I have to work harder and push to where I want to be, which is in the first-team eventually. There’s a little bit more pressure on me now, but I’ll just take that on the chin and play my game. The new intake of under-16s are settling in well to the under-18s side. I think most of us played together last season and so we’ve all gained experience from that. Off the pitch, there’s already quite a good atmosphere between the second and first years so now we have to bring that out further, which shouldn’t be a problem. On the pitch, in training we play at a high intensity and we try to work our hardest to bring that into the matches, and hopefully we can keep that consistent to try and win games. I played for the under-23s in pre-season and you see the change instantly. When I went to train with them, it’s a different step. They’re tighter, you get harder challenges but you get to grips with it after a while. You’ve got to play quicker and do harder work. It’s definitely tougher, but I’d say I’m getting used to it. Playing at that level against boys who’ve been playing for so much longer helps my game. They’re

PALACE

v

NEWCASTLE UNITED

more experienced and know things, and they’ve come across players like me before so you’ve got to get to grips with how to get past them and that totally different atmosphere and style of football. It’s definitely beneficial playing up at that level. I’ve had a good start to the season, but I’m always looking to improve. I’ve been in the gym a lot trying to improve my upper body strength; I’m already quite dominant lower down so I’m just trying to build my strength up. Technically I’m pretty confident at picking up the ball, driving forward, getting into one v one situations and even beating a couple of players then sliding people through. Paddy McCarthy is an unbelievable manager. He’s got this work-rate that you don’t really see from other managers, and he then brings that into our game and we take it on. We gain that leadership that he’s got and hopefully take it into the games. He and Gary Issott are always giving me information to improve my game, and that helps me to improve a lot quicker. TQ Addy is the biggest joker in the dressing room. He’s with the under-23s now but he’s still always in our changing room! He’s a funny guy but it’s a great atmosphere and actually everyone’s quite funny, so it’s a good dressing room to be in. I’m happy being here, it’s a great club to be at.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 SOUTHAMPTON 2 Saturday 1st September 2018

Goals from Danny Ings and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saw Palace fall to a third league defeat in a row at the expense of Southampton at Selhurst Park. After a quiet first half, the game burst into life a minute after the restart when Cedric Soares’ cross somehow managed to drift into the penalty area where Ings had escaped the attention of the Eagles defence, and he slipped the ball through Wayne Hennessey’s legs. That sparked Palace into life and James McArthur curled a shot against the crossbar, but on 63 minutes

the Saints were awarded a penalty when Aaron WanBissaka blocked an Ings shot with his hand. Thankfully for the Eagles, Charlie Austin’s attempt down the middle was blocked by Hennessey. Mohamed Elyounoussi also struck the goalframe after the Palace keeper had saved from Nathan Redmond, but at the other end Alex McCarthy made a superb reaction save to keep out a Christian Benteke header, which proved vital as in stoppage-time Matt Targett played in Hojbjerg to put an unfair gloss on the scoreline.

HUDDERSFIELD town 0 crystal palace 1 Saturday 15th September 2018

Yellow proved to be lucky for Crystal Palace once again as Wilfried Zaha’s superb first half strike saw the new third kit’s first outing christened with a win against Huddersfield Town. A quiet, gritty first half burst into life on 38 minutes when Zaha picked the ball up from Jordan Ayew 40 yards from goal and embarked on a fine run down the left that saw him tease past Florent Hadergjonaj, squeeze into the box between the leftback and Elias Kachunga, and despite a tight angle

Plenty of chances fell Huddersfield’s way in the second half, with Aaron Mooy hitting the base of the post with a volley and both teams had goals chalked off with Cheikhou Kouyaté feeling hard-done-by when he stabbed home after Lossl won a soft free-kick. James McArthur also saw a good chance go begging following more good work by Zaha, but Palace managed to keep the hosts at bay despite a late onslaught to end their three-game losing league run.
