SINCE MARCH ONLY LIVERPOOL HAVE BEATEN US HERE AT SELHURST, AND WE’LL AIM TO CONTINUE MAKING OUR HOME A FORTRESS

THE MANAGER 05

pAST results can be an inspiration Despite suffering back-to-back league defeats, performance-wise it has been a very promising start to the campaign for us, and with a little more luck we could have had a few more points.

Against Liverpool, we were in the game right up until the final couple of minutes despite playing with 10 men, which given their attacking talents is an achievement. We were incredibly unfortunate to find ourselves going into half-time a goal down as we believe it was never a penalty, and having got so close to claiming a point it was disappointing that moment proved to be a huge turning point. Then at Watford last week, we were very much in the game and after having the best of the first half we found ourselves on the wrong end of a mis-hit cross which flew right into the top corner. But I have to give credit to the players who could have let their heads drop at that moment, but they never gave in despite finding themselves two goals down, and that resilience almost saw us escape with a point right at the death. Two consecutive losses doesn’t make us a bad team overnight, and we just have to put those matches and misfortune behind us and remember the run we had been on before that. Since March only Liverpool have beaten us here at Selhurst, and we’ll aim to continue making our home a fortress this afternoon against Southampton. I’d like to welcome Mark Hughes, his players and staff as well as the travelling fans to this corner of south London today. It was nice to progress into the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night at Swansea City, especially after making 10 changes. It was a tricky tie for us, coming just over 48 hours after the Watford

PALACE

game, but I was delighted with the professional performance and attitude of the players. It is nearly a year since I first took my place in the dugout here for a game against Southampton, on what was a very proud afternoon for myself given my roots. We didn’t get the result that day, but hopefully we can today to emphasise the progress this club has made in the past 12 months. Back in September 2017 we had no points and no goals, confidence was low and the players were getting used to the demands of a new manager for the third time in nine months. Now we have stability, an improved squad and plenty of positive results to use as inspiration to help ensure we don’t suffer a similar fate this time around. The first international break of the season follows the conclusion of this match, and that will allow us to evaluate the first few matches and see where we can improve. We can build up our fitness levels and continue to work tactically with the newer players as they adapt to our style of play, so I am relishing the opportunity of getting out on the training ground and working with the squad during this period. Enjoy the game!

IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET BACK ON TRACK TODAY AFTER TWO LOSSES IN A ROW

THE CAPTAIN 07

We'll be looking To take 3 points Our last home game against Liverpool was very frustrating because I think we deserved a point at least, but that’s football. We just have to continue and take points in other games.

The penalty decision was the most difficult moment for us because it was just a minute before the break, and after they scored they had 15 minutes to prepare for the second half while our dressing room was filled with frustration. We tried hard throughout; in the first half we hit the crossbar and in the second half I had a good free-kick saved, but against Liverpool you don’t get many opportunities and we eventually lost. It was also the first time since I’ve been here that we’ve had someone sent off, but the lads showed great resilience to keep going despite the setback. We tried hard in the last 20 minutes but we’re playing against one of the best teams in the league with 10 men. Against this kind of team it is impossible to create a lot of chances with one less player, and when we opened up our game a little we conceded from the counter-attack, but on the whole we can be pleased with what we saw that night. Aaron was disappointed to be shown a red card, but he’s already bounced back which is good as he will be a big part of the team this season. Against Swansea he had another good game, and now he and Joel will have a good battle for the right-back position, which benefits the whole team. The Watford match was a game of two halves, which is something we have to improve on. In the first 20 minutes we played well, especially in the first half when we created two or three very good chances but didn’t score. However, in the Premier League if you

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

don’t score from one of them then your opponents will create some of their own. In the first 15 minutes after half-time we didn’t start so well, and for the first goal maybe myself or Macca should have blocked the shot, and their second was a lucky goal. After that we made it 2-1, and then we had the chance in the last minute but again we were unlucky. I have to congratulate Wilf on becoming the club’s record Premier League goalscorer. I didn’t know much about him before I came to Palace, but he is improving season by season and we are very happy to have him in the team as he makes it much easier for us to achieve our goals. It is important to get back on track today after two losses in a row. We have had a tough start to the season with two hard away fixtures and a home game against Liverpool, but we could easily have had four or five points by now. Instead of worrying about that, we’re instead looking forward to today’s game. Southampton are a difficult team, but we are playing at home and we’ll be looking to take three points to improve our total going into the international break. Make some noise!

WE ARE JUST A MATTER OF DAYS AWAY FROM ROY’S FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN CHARGE OF THE CLUB. I MUST SAY HE’S BEEN A JOY TO DEAL WITH OVER THAT PERIOD

THE CHAIRMAN 09

we are making huge progress Welcome to the players, staff and directors of Southampton today, and to all Palace supporters. Every match in this league is difficult and I’m sure once more it will be small margins that decide the outcome.

Since my last notes, we suffered defeats to Liverpool and Watford which were hard to stomach, as the performances were of a high level and could easily have yielded points. It’s fair to say that luck was not on our side when it came to crucial refereeing decisions that had a profound impact in both games. I hope they balance out over the course of the season. Those results make the cup win away at Swansea City even more pleasing, as Roy rotated his squad giving some much-needed minutes to those who have been on the periphery. Brighty and I made the long drive there along with 523 hardy Palace fans, and I would like to thank each and every one of them for making the seven-hour round trip; it was hugely appreciated by everyone especially the players and manager. Those are the games that I really get the chance to enjoy, with there being slightly less pressure than in the league and a chance to see players that haven’t had as many minutes, or even play for their first full game. Everyone did well against a highly technical team who gave us a really good game. In the end it was probably experience that told, and a great first goal from Alexander got us into the next round which was clearly a great moment for him and I’m sure the first of many. Our Ladies team have begun the season with a flourish by beating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties and then Super League side Yeovil Town in the Continental Tyres Cup - a remarkable achievement. The FA’s eventual offer of a place in the new Women’s

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

Championship has been well publicised, and given the short turnaround between that decision and the season starting, Dean Davenport and his squad deserve huge credit for these results. I’d urge you all to get along to support our Ladies for their historic first game in the new division against Leicester City on Sunday 9th September at Bromley FC (kick off 2pm). You may have seen that I’ve signed up for the Palace for Life Foundation’s upcoming ‘Marathon March’ on 13th October which is a 26.2 mile walk from Selhurst Park to central London, and it’s not too late to join us. I have seen first-hand the amazing work the Foundation does to inspire local young people to make genuine, long-lasting changes to their lives, so please support them however you can - even if it’s just sponsoring me! We are just a matter of days away from Roy’s first anniversary in charge of the club. I must say he’s been a joy to deal with over that period, and I feel as though we are making huge progress on and off the pitch. We are all hugely appreciative of the support our fans give us, especially in testing times. Roy, the players and I share the belief that you play a crucial role in helping us make Selhurst Park a fortress. With that in mind, I’d urge you to get behind him and the team today, as you always do. Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Southampton // Saturday 1st September // Selhurst Park

today’s game Both Palace and Southampton recovered from successive league defeats by advancing into the Carabao Cup third round having made many changes, but the win would have been more morale-boosting for today’s visitors. The Saints defeated Brighton thanks to a late Charlie Austin goal, but head to SE25 having won just two of their last 15 Premier League games. They are still searching for their first three-point haul of the this campaign after a goalless draw against Burnley was followed by defeats against Everton and Leicester City. Mark Hughes’ team had led against the Foxes last weekend but Harry Maguire’s last-minute strike means they have dropped 24 points from leading positions since the start of last season. The Eagles have historically struggled against the south-coast club, winning just three of the last 19 top-flight meetings between the sides, but encouragingly those have all come in the last six encounters. They also have the edge over Hughes, who has managed six away Premier League matches against Palace and won none of them, including his sides losing his last four. On their previous visit to south London, the Saints ran out 1-0 winners in Roy Hodgson’s first match in charge in September 2017, but have since won just 13 points in 18 away Premier League matches. Palace will be hoping their poor away form continues this afternoon.

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE has scored five goals in his last seven matches against Southampton in the Premier League, including three in his last four for Palace.

Newsroom ZAHA BREAKS PALACE RECORD After netting against Watford last weekend, Wilfried Zaha registered his 24th Premier League goal for the Eagles, and overtook Chris Armstrong to become the club’s top scorer in the division. The Ivorian bagged his second of this season against the Hornets to climb to the top of the standings, ending Armstrong’s 24-year long reign as the Eagles’ leading marksman. The striker bagged his 23 goals in the 1992/93 and 1994/95 campaigns. Zaha netted the first of his 24 strikes against Newcastle United on his Premier League debut for the Eagles in August 2014, and has taken 132 games to reach his latest milestone in red and blue. The only other player to reach the 20-goal mark is Andrew Johnson, who notched all of his 21 strikes during the 2004/05 campaign to finish as the league’s top English scorer and earn him an international call-up. The nearest current player to him is Christian Benteke on 18. However, Zaha still has some way to go to break the Eagles’ all-time top-flight scoring record, which is held by Mark Bright with 39 strikes to his name. Ian Wright is in second spot with 28, while Zaha has now moved level with Gerry Queen in third position.

SWANS SEEN OFF IN CARABAO CUP Palace moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup by beating Swansea City 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night. Roy Hodgson made 10 changes to his line-up including handing debuts to Vicente Guaita and Ryan Inniss, and after a goalless first half the keeper did well to keep that scoreline intact when he saved well from Dan James. That proved vital as the Eagles pounced four minutes later when Jairo Riedewald played an incisive pass into Alexander Sørloth, who drilled home his first ever Eagles goal. The third-round draw was made after this edition went to print, but the tie will be played on the week commencing 24th September.

LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF It will be a historic occasion on Sunday 9th September as Palace Ladies host Leicester City in their first ever Women’s Championship fixture. Despite being told they were stepping up to the second tier of the women’s game just five weeks before their first fixture, the Eagles have prepared well by recording successive wins in the Continental Tyres Cup, claiming a penalty shootout victory over Tottenham Hotspur before beating top-flight side Yeovil Town. That gives Dean Davenport’s team plenty of momentum heading into their clash with the Foxes, who themselves have stepped up a tier after two strong seasons in the Northern Division. The match will take place at Bromley FC’s Hayes Lane ground with a 2pm kick-off, with tickets costing £5 for adults and £2.50 for over-65s and season ticket holders, while under-16s go free!

Cheikhou

KouyatĂŠ

Some might say that having spent a summer amongst the hullabaloo of a World Cup and then enduring the upheaval of switching clubs, it has been a tricky time mentally for Cheikhou KouyatĂŠ. However, he reveals to Jonathon Rogers that these last couple of months are nothing compared to what he had to endure to make his name in European football.

CHEIKHOU KOUYATÉ 17

After spending 20 minutes in the company of Cheikhou Kouyaté, it is easy to see how his determined, nevergive-in, gritty playing style has been forged. What wasn’t easy for the Senegalese midfielder was how he acquired those traits in the first place. Many footballers have sacrificed plenty or overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams, but Palace’s new man’s early days in the game were as tough as they come. His tale is a real sink-or-swim story filled with setbacks and rejection, and even a glimmer of hope came packaged with crippling homesickness, loneliness and a huge culture shock after being uprooted 3,500 miles to a different continent. Battle-hardened after refusing the temptation to quit, the tough tackling but softly spoken Kouyaté can laugh and smile about those character-defining days now, as he gives an intriguing insight into the lengths that young African players have to go to for their talents to be appreciated in Europe. “It was around 2006 and I went to Greece and France but the teams there said it was too early for me or that I was no good,” he said. “It was very disappointing for me but then a team in Belgium phoned me called Brussels FC who were in the first division at the time and they gave me a chance, but it was very difficult at 16-years-old. “In my first year in Europe I didn’t see my father, mother or any of my family. I would finish training and go back to the hotel and nobody was there and I had nothing, so I would cry and cry and cry. Everything was different; the food, the weather. I remember I came to Europe in November and it was so cold, and I said ‘football is not for me – I want to stop’. Thank God that I had some good people behind me to help me carry on. “I would call my agent in Senegal and say I wanted to come back. He told me that everything I was feeling was normal, and to keep working hard. When I got to a big team, then I would start to like things and I achieve the dream of all young players in Africa.” With the benefit of hindsight those words are

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

incredibly prophetic, and with them ringing in his head Kouyaté set about developing a dogged desire to make it to the top. “If you are not mentally strong, you are dead,” he added. “You have positive guys and negative guys, and they’ll tell you that you’re rubbish and ask you why you’re here, but the others tell you that it is possible to advance. It’s up to you who you listen to, and if you are mentally strong you’re going to make it.”

I REMEMBER I CAME TO EUROPE IN NOVEMBER AND IT WAS SO COLD, AND I SAID ‘FOOTBALL IS NOT FOR ME – I WANT TO STOP’

That is something that the Dakar-born man did incredibly quickly. It took just two handfuls of appearances for Brussels for his talents to attract the attentions of the country’s most successful team as Anderlecht swooped, and soon hardships gave way to championships. In his five seasons in purple and white, Kouyaté lifted four league titles and played in all 12 of their UEFA Champions League games during a golden period of his career. “I spent four years in Belgium and it was very nice for me,” he added. “I won four league titles so I was very happy, I knew the city and everything I needed they helped me with. In 2009/10 I won the title in my first year and my mother came over for the first time, so that was very nice. It was unbelievable for me as a young African player to come there, win the title and be very proud, and in my mum’s eyes it was unbelievable. “Anderlecht is like my second family. They helped me to become a big man, gain experience and know myself as a player, because sometime you think you

18 CHEIKHOU KOUYATÉ

can do something but they’ll say that you can’t. They also told me that anything in life is possible.” It was around this time that Kouyaté would come across two players that have helped him settle into his new surroundings in recent weeks. “Luka [Milivojevic] arrived in 2013 with Aleksandar Mitrovic, and I could see straight away that Luka was a good player. We enjoyed playing together and we won another title that year with me as a centre-back because Luka played in midfield. He was quiet but a nice guy, and it’s very nice to see him again here.

ANDERLECHT IS LIKE MY SECOND FAMILY. THEY HELPED ME TO BECOME A BIG MAN, GAIN EXPERIENCE AND KNOW MYSELF AS A PLAYER “I also knew Pape Souaré and would sometimes go and watch him and [Everton midfielder] Idrissa Gana Gueye when they played for Lille, and they came to watch me at Anderlecht. The first time I met Pape he was so quiet, but now he is crazy! He is a good player and has plenty of energy, but he is crazy!” It would have been easy for Kouyaté to continue to dominate the middle of the park in Belgian football for another decade and claim a goldmine’s worth of silverware at the biggest club in the land, but given his difficult beginnings and how hard he had worked to get into European football, he was never going to rest on his laurels. After 206 Anderlecht appearances, ex-Eagles boss Sam Allardyce persuaded him that West Ham United was the place for the now-Senegalese international to make the next step in his career, and he seized it in 2014. “Everyone was telling me to go to another team because I had played for too many years at Anderlecht, so I met with Sam Allardyce and he brought me here

CHEIKHOU KOUYATÉ 21

to England,” he said. “I had some unbelievable experiences, especially at Upton Park. My best season was the last year we played there [in 2015/16]. The day we moved to the London Stadium, we lost our identity but the club wanted to go to another level. “We had some good players there, and I played a lot of games but last season was very difficult. Everything is there for them to be successful, and I wish them the best because they helped me and I’ll never forget that.” While success in the form of trophies and glory didn’t come his way in east London, Kouyaté became a household name in the Premier League. He made no fewer than 31 appearances in each of his four seasons with the Hammers, and will always have a place in the club’s history having scored their first ever goal at their new home in 2016.

I HAD SOME UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCES, ESPECIALLY AT UPTON PARK. MY BEST SEASON WAS THE LAST YEAR WE PLAYED THERE Despite the turbulence off the pitch and in the dugout during these years, Kouyaté was a beacon of consistency throughout. Those displays were replicated at international level which helped Senegal reach only their second World Cup finals last summer, with Kouyaté rewarded with his nation’s captaincy before the competition kicked off. However, it would end in bitter disappointment as after ending the group stage locked with Japan, they were denied a spot in the knockout stages by virtue of having picked up more bookings. Looking back with mixed emotions, he said: “The World Cup might only come once or twice in your life so the experience is unbelievable as all the countries come together, but it was a hard way to go out.

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

"We had two more yellow cards, so when we went out you just wanted to cry. It was so unlucky as it was the first time it had happened in the World Cup, but that’s football – sometimes it’s going to kill you! Why couldn’t have Japan and Senegal played again?” With that question dominating his mindset as his summer holidays started earlier than he had hoped, Kouyaté’s thoughts eventually began to turn towards the next challenge in his club career, and soon the Eagles would offer just that, aided by a friendly voice on the other end of the phoneline. “After the club told me about their project, Pape called to try and convince me,” Kouyaté revealed. “I have played at Palace for many years so I knew the atmosphere but didn’t know the players, and Pape said this is a very good team and I would like it here a lot, so I thought ‘why not?’. I knew Pape, Luka and Mamadou Sakho, and James Tomkins too, so that has made it very easy for me to settle.” Speaking of settling in, Kouyaté believes that having spent two years playing in the challenging surroundings of the London Stadium, he is looking forward to once again putting in industrious displays in the middle of one of the Premier League’s more traditional stadia. “I came here to play last season and West Ham were winning 2-0 but the supporters kept singing and at the end of the game it finished 2-2. That’s what players need; the fans behind them during the good and bad moments. If you have fans like that, you have to give everything for them. “After the Liverpool game I talked with Mama and Pape and said: ‘what is this – it’s unbelievable!’. It was a similar atmosphere to when I played at Upton Park and I liked that. "The fans are so close to the pitch and they sing from the beginning to the end of the game, but Mama said ‘you’ve seen nothing yet!’. It already feels like home here.” Given Kouyaté’s difficult beginnings in the game, that is quite a compliment.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SHIRT AS A KID?

WHAT WERE YOU WEARING ON YOUR PRO DEBUT?

WHICH IS THE MOST SPECIAL SHIRT YOU’VE WORN?

It was a Bolton Wanderers shirt with John McGinley on the back who played up front for them years ago in the mid-1990s – I didn’t support them though!

It was the Liverpool away shirt that we wore in the UEFA Champions League against PSV Eindhoven in 2008. It was grey and red, so it was quite smart!

That one is easy, it would have to be the shirt I wore when I made my England debut against Norway away in 2012.

When I played away at Old Trafford in the FA Cup in one of my first games, I swapped with Ryan Giggs. It was an electric atmosphere and I played well against him.

I think it might have actually been Dwight Gayle when we played against Newcastle United last season.

I would say Inter Milan’s home shirts are the nicest design. Those blue and black stripes are pretty iconic and I like them a lot!

100 Years of the Crystal Palace Programme

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

Part II

1922 - 1928

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1922/23 For this campaign the size changed to a squarer format of 18½cms x 24cms with blue print on white paper. Again the issues were numbered and published by T. W. Morris Ltd, still costing two pence for 12 pages. The cover page had a large advertisement for Smart Brothers, a furniture shop located at 34-40 George Street in Croydon, and the first two inside pages usually contained a report of the previous game. Pages 4 and 5 looked at the reserves’ latest fixture and the day’s opponents, with the centre spread containing the teams - numbered 1-22 - and surrounded by up to 11 adverts. A page was given over to club and other news, followed by a half-page cartoon. As usual the code for the half-time scores appeared along with the fixture list for both Palace teams and the league tables, which in this edition showed Palace just above the bottom six. The programme below is for the fixture against West Ham United on 31st March.

1923/24 This season’s programme reverted to a more upright size of approximately 14cms x 21cms printed in black on a pale brown/orange shade of paper. The price remained the same with a page increase to 16, but there was a change of printer to The Advertiser Printing Works, 36 High Street, Croydon. A rather plain cover showed an advert for tailors S. W. Poore of 57 George Street and on the first inside pages the club officials were listed. Advertisements dominated the programme with more than half of it given over to a variety of local businesses, including Powell’s Palace Brewery and Allin’s Cycles of Whitehorse Road. The usual format as previous seasons followed with secretary-manager Edmund Goodman probably penning the pieces, and in this issue for the game against Stockport County on 16th February he reflected on the recent matches against Clapton (now Leyton) Orient and the second goalless FA Cup replay with Notts County, played at Villa Park.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

1924/25 This season saw the Glaziers move into Selhurst Park, but the club retained the same measurements for the programme which would be the standard for a number of seasons to come. There was an outer cover of pale red while inside there were 16 pages of black print on white paper, priced at 2d. The content points to this being printed once more by the Croydon Advertiser. There was little change to the internal content with the suggested team line-ups as usual in the middle pages. Again there was a sizeable amount of advertising, some of it associated with our new home with one for Humphrey’s Ltd, who built the Main Stand that listed over 20 other football and rugby grounds where they had completed work. Worryingly, there was an advert for ‘Fibrotiles’ which were made of asbestos and cement that were used for the stand roof. Illustrated below are the centre-pages for the game against Middlesbrough on 29th November.

1925/26, 1926/27 & 1927/28 These three seasons kept to the same size and price of 2d (approx. 1½p) as before, but by now the publication was being printed by The Modern Press in Croydon. 'From The Editor’s Desk' looked back at a previous game and ended with a note about the reserves and our visitors that afternoon. The suggested team line-ups occurred in the centre followed by league tables, and towards the back of the programme the fixtures and results for the first-team and reserves appeared. If this review seems rather scant, it is because the content remained more or less the same with a significant amount taken up with advertisements for almost 50 local businesses - including my forebears’ one for a shop in Whitehorse Lane - that reflected the variety of merchandise available in the area. The pages shown are taken from the programme for the home game against Millwall on 7th May 1927.

WilfriedZAHA Record Breaker

Wilfried Zaha’s 24th Premier League strike against Watford last week saw him break Chris Armstrong’s 24-year reign at the top of the club's goalscoring charts in the division. Here, we delve into the statistics to evaluate how he did it

It is almost four years to the day that Wilfried Zaha etched his name onto a Premier League scoresheet for the first time when he rifled home a stoppagetime equaliser against Newcastle United to give Neil Warnock’s second spell in charge a joyous start. That would prove to be a glimpse of what was to come. One interesting footnote to his recordbreaking tally is that finish against the Magpies could statistically be classified as the ‘typical’ Zaha goal – a right-footed strike from inside the penalty area, away from home in the final stages of a half. 20 of Zaha’s 24 top-flight strikes have come with his right boot, but what the stats don’t show is the range of those goals. There have been many measured efforts like that cool finish up on Tyneside in 2014, but there have also been belters such as his memorable

Chelsea Norwich City

strike at Hull City two years later, his acrobatic scissor kick against Swansea City a few weeks after that or his two composed finishes this season that already have him topping the Eagles’ scoring charts. But the numbers do make for interesting reading. Despite spending just a season of his professional career away from SE25, he has actually scored more Premier League goals on his travels than at Selhurst Park, including nine of his first 12, but has never scored at the same away venue twice. Zaha has also netted 11 of his 24 goals in the final 15 minutes of halves, with his most fruitful period coming just before half-time when he has struck six times in total, such as the winner in the 2-1 victory against Chelsea in 2017/18 that finally brought Palace’s first points of the season – one of nine times

he has either won Palace the game, or put them ahead on their course to victory. His 24 goals have been scored in 23 different matches, with his brace against Brighton and Hove Albion last season the only occasion he has netted more than once in the division. Those strikes have proved their weight in gold, as Sunday’s defeat at Vicarage Road was only the third occasion that Palace have tasted defeat when Zaha has found the back of the net – the others being the pair of losses against Swansea in 2016/17. It was against Bournemouth back in April that Zaha scored his only Premier League goal from outside the area, but another surprising statistic is that he has netted 20% of his goals from inside the six-yard box, highlighting an underrated predatory instinct that sees him sniffing out tap-ins as well as creating them.

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

He may have netted goal number one against Newcastle in stoppage-time, but that wasn’t the latest the academy product has found the net, as his wonderful solo effort against West Ham United last season came after 96 minutes and six seconds to also snatch a point at the death. Conversely, his earliest strike also proved crucial, as it paved the way for Palace’s survival clinching 4-0 victory over Hull City in May 2017, clocking in at just two minutes and 12 seconds. But the most important stat shows his increasingly effectiveness. In each of the past three seasons, he has bettered his goal output from the previous season, and with two to his name already this campaign he is well on course to netting double figures for the first time, which would see him set a benchmark that could take a long time for another Eagle to surpass.

20TH PREMIER LEAGUE CAMPAIGN

The manager One of English football’s most decorated players arrived at St Mary’s in March, tasked with keeping the Saints in the Premier League after Mauricio Pellegrino had left them winless in 17 games and a point above the drop zone. Hughes would win two and draw two of his eight games in charge to keep his team in the top-flight at the expense of Stoke City who had dismissed him five months earlier, ending his four-and-a-half year spell in charge of the Potters.

Club legend Nicknamed ‘Le God’ by Saints supporters, Le Tissier spent his entire 16-year playing career at Southampton between 1986 and 2002 and almost singlehandedly helped them avoid relegation on numerous occasions during the 1990s. He was the first midfielder to reach 100 Premier League goals and fittingly scored the last ever league goal at The Dell by netting a stunning last-gasp winner against Arsenal in May 2001. He retired a year later having scored 212 times in red and white, including 47 out of 48 penalties.

Southampton managed to make a late deadline day move to bring in Ings on loan from Liverpool, with a reported £20 million fee agreed to make the transfer permanent next summer. Having impressed in the Premier League for Burnley by netting 11 goals in the 2014/15 campaign, the striker moved to Anfield but would suffer two bad knee injuries on Merseyside. Things you didn't know... ABOUT SOUTHAMPTON

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Southampton.

Southampton are well known for their transfer dealings, with their sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for £75 million currently being the biggest fee for a defender. On the flipside, the Saints’ £19.2 million record capture Guido Carrillo from Monaco has not appeared to go so well, with the striker only playing nine times and failing to score. He is now on loan at Leganes.

Graeme Souness brought Ali Dia to the club in November 1996 in the middle of an injury crisis, having been duped into believing that he was a cousin of George Weah. When Matt Le Tissier got injured against Leeds United, Dia came on in the 32nd minute before being subbed off again five minutes from time. Le Tissier commented: “He was like a headless chicken, but the funny thing was he was running everywhere the ball wasn’t – I think he was trying to avoid it.” Dia was released two weeks later.

Southampton hold the unique honour of being the last club to receive the FA Cup from the Queen. Despite finishing sixth in the Second Division in 1975/76, while Manchester United were third in the First Division, their shock 1-0 win over the Red Devils at the end of the campaign saw them climb the steps at Wembley to be given the famous old trophy by Her Majesty.

CHRIS WATERS 51

When the Saints moved into St Mary’s Stadium by the banks of the River Itchen in 2001, it was a return home for the club who had been founded in 1885 by members of St Mary’s Church Young Men Association. Originally called Southampton St Mary’s, the team played by the river until they put together the grand sum of £10,000 to build The Dell in 1898.

Though their rivalry with Portsmouth is well known, Southampton had to play some ‘home’ matches at Fratton Park during World War II as a bomb landed on The Dell pitch. It created a huge crater and damaged the drainage system, leaving the surface unplayable for a number of weeks.

Palace fans grimace at the recollection of finishing fourth-bottom in the Premier League in 1994/95 and still going down, as the league reduced the size of the top-flight from 22 to 20. Saints supporters may have a degree of sympathy, as in the 1973/74 season, the First Division increased relegation to the bottom three clubs for the first time. Southampton finished third-bottom, one point shy of Birmingham City, and went down.

The club’s heaviest away defeat has been an 8-0 drubbing on three occasions; at Tottenham Hotspur in 1936, Everton in 1971 and against Palace in 1913 when Charlie Hewitt hit four goals. This was in an era when the two sides met regularly in the Southern League; in fact, the Saints’ reserve side were the first to play the Glaziers in their first official league game in 1905.

A foot in

Both camps

In each edition, we will try and form the best starting line-up possible comprised of players who have represented both the Eagles and today’s opponents, and see which club comes out on top when it comes to appearances and goals.

GK: John Burridge – CPFC 102/0, SFC 75/0 Having played for 29 clubs it is perhaps unsurprising that the extrovert Burridge represented both Palace and the Saints, helping the Eagles win the Second Division in 1978/79.

LM: Mel Blyth – CPFC 254/12, SFC 136/7 Playing here in his original position of wing-half, Blyth’s switch to centre-back in 1968 helped Palace clinch top-flight promotion in 1968/69, before joining Southampton five years later.

RB: Nathaniel Clyne – CPFC 139/1, SFC 104/5 A product of the Eagles academy, Clyne is a former Palace Player of the Year and won the first of his 14 England caps to date during his time at the Saints.

ATT: Danny Butterfield – CPFC 269/10, SFC 54/0 While he spent the majority of his career at right-back, Butterfield’s 2010 hat-trick against Wolves during his time as a makeshift striker is now a part of Eagles folklore.

CB: Fitz Hall – CPFC 81/3, SFC 12/0 The centre-back signed from the Saints ahead of the 2004/05 Premier League campaign and would later go on to captain the Eagles.

ATT: Iain Dowie – CPFC 25/10, SFC 145/33 The Northern Ireland international represented both teams in the Premier League, but it would be in the dugout as manager where he made his biggest impact in SE25.

CB: Jose Fonte – CPFC 92/6, SFC 288/15 The Eagles brought the now-Portuguese international to England in 2007 but it would be at St Mary’s where he would flourish, helping the Saints win successive promotions. LB: Mark Dennis – CPFC 10/0, SFC 129/2 A member of the Southampton side that finished First Division runners-up in 1983/84, the notorious hard-man who was sent off 12 times in his career ended it SE25. RM: Jason Puncheon – CPFC 162/16, SFC 81/10 After helping the Saints climb from League One to the top-flight, Puncheon returned to his native Croydon to help establish his boyhood club in the Premier League. CM: David Burnside – CPFC 64/10, SFC 70/26 After spending two years at the Saints, £14,000 made Burnside Palace’s record signing in 1964 and he played a key role in the Glaziers' run to the FA Cup quarter-finals that season.

PALACE

SOUTHAMPTON

ATT: Neil Shipperley – CPFC 122/32, SFC 84/19 Shipperley would have two successful spells at Palace after joining from the Saints, including netting the goal that clinched play-off success against West Ham United in 2004.

Ian King & Terry Byfield All season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

brilliant personal success for one player, and a story-book debut for another. And even above those two, a splendid and encouraging start for all 11 Crystal Palace players in the massacre of Ninian Park on Saturday. The reasons behind the Palace success story? Far too numerous to count in this brief opening paragraph, but not the least important factors were the performances of Cliff Jackson and the new boy Mel Blyth. Let’s talk about Jackson first – and how clearly he deserves pride of place. Ask most Palace fans about Jackson and you’ll be told a story of patchy success and inconsistency. All this is true – and equally true is the fact that never has such confidence and panache been seen from West Country boy Jackson since he arrived at Selhurst Park in 1966. And everything was against him from the start, too. Bobby Woodruff went down with stomach trouble less than 24 hours before the match, so Jackson was pitchforked into the side as a makeshift centre forward. Jackson is by nature and inclination a winger, but he took to the number nine shirt like the proverbial duck to water. Looking yards quicker than last season, he chased, harried and worked for 90 minutes, and generally gave the Cardiff defence a terrible time. And he really looked the part, too. Here was no winger with a nine on his back. Jackson performed a

David

Payne

genuine centre forward role, and was in every way the spearhead of the attack. His success, and that of the Palace side, was made to look even more dramatic and overwhelming than it should have been by the dismal Cardiff defence. Palace were given the freedom of the park by a jaded-looking home rearguard – and what a time to look jaded! But nevertheless, there was a touch of ruthlessness in the Palace system that must have done manager Bert Head’s heart good. Not so happy were the 16,395 home crowd, of whom considerably less

PALACE

v

THE GLORY YEARS 57

th

ly B l e M

than half were still there when the final whistle went. And don’t let the frailties of the home side detract from a sensational debut by Palace inside left Mel Blyth. The tall 22 year old was kept out of his favourite left half spot by an in-form Jackie Bannister, so he moved to inside left and produced a performance which must guarantee a place for him which is as safe as anyone’s in the team. Blyth was Jackson’s leading aide in the process of driving the home side insane. He showed a good turn of speed, intelligence, good ball control and an almost uncanny knack of knowing where to be at any given time. And this was no better proved than in the sixth minute. Mark Lazarus had already shaken the Cardiff cross bar with a fierce shot when the game was only two minutes old. Then Lazarus sent Jackson away from almost an offside position, and Jackson beat Cardiff captain Harris before sending in a crisp shot which goalkeeper Davies could only parry – straight to the grateful feet of Blyth, who had sensibly kept running, and he claimed the

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

dividend by stabbing the ball home from three feet out. Cannonball Jackson nearly made it two after half an hour, and five minutes later made quite certain. He swung the ball out to Blyth whose cross was missed by Cardiff centre half Murray, and the ball trickled on to Jackson, who rapidly increased its speed with a left-foot shot which gave Davies no chance. Another mistake by the Cardiff defence – this time Harris and Murray shared the blame – gave Palace their third goal in the 39th minute when Jackson put David Payne through, and the right half scored a rare goal for him with a cool shot. It looked like the continuation of the slaughter less than 60 seconds after the interval when Lazarus passed to Jackson, who ran away from the attentions of Murray and poked the ball home with utter finality. But that was the end of the goals. Palace very professionally stopped taking risks, did their share of attacking, but quite simply tied it up in the back division and gave the Cardiff forwards no chance. All in all, this was a workmanlike performance by the Palace, and the forward line, with debutant Colin Taylor and Steve Kember both playing like men determined to give manager Head a headache when he comes to trying to get all five in the team, as well as a recovered Woodruff. Palace: Jackson (J), Sewell, Presland, Payne, McCormick, Bannister, Lazarus, Kember, Jackson (C), Blyth, Taylor. Cardiff City: Davies, Carver, Ferguson, Phillips, Murray, Harris, Jones, Clark, King, Toshack, Bird.

Story of the

D

Season

uring the previous season in the Second Division, many of the club’s successful FA Youth Cup side had established themselves in the first-team to end the campaign ninth. Therefore,, during the summer manager Terry Venables sought only one player and he made a special trip to Spain, where he found Preston North End forward Mike Elwiss on holiday and obtained his signature for a then-club record £200,000 to replace the enigmatic Rachid Harkouk who had crossed over to Queens Park Rangers for £90,000. There was no obvious interest in Palace being among the favourites to win promotion as the bookies were offering odds of 20-1 for the title! Pre-season had been spent in Sweden and there were friendlies back in England at Wimbledon and Arsenal where Elwiss certainly looked the part. The season opened at Blackburn Rovers, who had finished fifth, on 19th August where the Eagles took an early lead through a David Swindlehurst free-kick, while Rovers equalised midway through the second half. Another promotion favourite Luton Town came to Selhurst Park three days later and again the Eagles took the lead, this time with a stunning move involving four players and Kenny Sansom crossing for Swindlehurst to head home. The Hatters equalised with a penalty, but Palace ran the second half and added goals from Vince Hilaire and Jerry Murphy.

A local derby with relegated West Ham United followed, and for the first time in three games the Eagles found themselves behind when Alan Taylor curled a shot through a crowd of players and past John Burridge. Four minutes later 18-year-old defender Billy Gilbert sent in a shot from fully 35 yards that dipped and swerved past Hammers keeper Bobby Ferguson for his first senior goal for the club, but they couldn’t find a second. The unbeaten start continued with a 2-1 League Cup victory at Ashton Gate over First Division Bristol City, when Venables was still able to field the same starting XI. PALACE

September began with a visit to Sheffield United, and the second league victory of the opening games was secured within four minutes of the start as Hilaire capitalised on a goalkeeping error to drive the ball home from eight yards, before Elwiss opened his Palace account as he sidestepped a defender to send a blistering shot high into the net. Another of the would-be promotion rivals arrived at Selhurst Park seven days later in the shape of Sunderland, and for once the Palace side struggled to pierce a Black Cats defence despite having most of the play, and 10 minutes into the second half the visitors took the lead. It looked like Swindlehurst had equalised soon afterwards but a linesman’s flag was raised for offside, and with 18 minutes left Barry Silkman came on for Murphy in what would be his last appearance for the first-team to give the side greater width. It helped as a point was salvaged five minutes from time when Swindlehurst was tripped in the area and Nicky Chatterton slotted home the resulting spot-kick. It was dejà-vu at The Den on 16th September PALACE

as the Eagles defeated Millwall 3-0 for a successive season in a somewhat ill-tempered encounter. It witnessed left-back Sansom’s 100th league appearance and the three goals came from the midfield trio of Murphy, Chatterton and Peter Nicholas, with the two points taking Palace to the top of the Second Division table above Stoke City on goal difference.

Geoff

Thomas A big change ahead of the 1988/89 season saw Jim Cannon depart, what did you make of that? On the last day of the previous season we just missed out on the play-offs because we were dependent on Millwall’s result, which didn't go for us. You could tell that Steve Coppell was looking for a bit of a changing of the guard and even though Jim was putting performances in week in and week out, his departure was more of a statement from Steve. He wanted to start afresh, get some young blood in and really go for it. We were all young lads but we were mature enough to know that this was going to be our opportunity to get into the big time.

Midfielder | 1987-1993 249 Appearances, 45 Goals 1988/89 Record: 26 Games, 4 Goals

me that season, especially the back end when I was watching players like Glenn Pennyfather and Alan Pardew coming in before Dave Madden did a tremendous job.

Incredibly you didn’t get your first win until October against Plymouth Argyle. Did that affect the players? I don’t feel we were that down about it because we were putting in decent performances, and in that game against Plymouth we scored four goals. When you have people like Wrighty and Brighty who can turn games in your favour with their goal threat, we knew we were not that far away. It was a time of just settling down, working harder on the training pitch and making sure that results followed. For me things were a bit frustrating as I was hampered by a groin injury which really plagued

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

THE GLORY YEARS 61

What was the secret of the partnership between Ian Wright and Mark Bright? They were playing at a level that was lower than their ability. They were just different class; Wrighty was like a Duracell bunny whilst Brighty was the one that calmed him down to ensure that his efforts weren’t wasted. Even though they were the best players, their training methods were admirable as they stayed out after the sessions and worked on their finishing. It paid off and they went on to show what good players they were. How important was the momentum gained in the final eight fixtures that clinched a play-off place? When you hit the play-offs you want to be in-form because you see so many times the team in third place go into them disappointed that they missed out on automatic promotion. I think a team that normally has a late run has momentum going into the play-offs with a spirit to push on. That’s what we saw from us in the back end of the season, and especially into the play-offs.

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

How do you reflect on that famous play-off final against Blackburn Rovers? The crucial point was Eddie McGoldrick’s scrambled goal to get us a consolation in the first leg. We believed that we had escaped because they had a few more chances and we could have lost by much more than the 3-1 scoreline. At Selhurst the crowd were so vocal and it just seemed like it was going to be our day, and straight from the kick-off we dominated. All these characters seemed to come together so well under Steve’s leadership and each player had their own back story as to why this achievement meant so much to them. Looking back as the captain of that team, it was a very special time.

Step Back

Prior to the start of the 1979/80 season, the players and staff were invited to a promotion celebration at Tiffany’s nightclub in Purley (now a fitness centre). A former ice rink, it became the Orchid Ballroom in 1950 and then continued as a nightclub under different names until 1990. Also a music venue in its day, it hosted gigs by a number of famous names including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Stevie Wonder and Queen.

COMMUNITY 67

Palace for life palaceforlife.org

PRECIEUX’S STORY We first met Precieux in 2013, when he attended a community football session with the Foundation at Selhurst Park aged 13. Three years later, the selfconfessed ‘trouble child’ found boxing and his whole life changed. At 16, Precieux was kicked out of sixth form and was targeted by an older gang member. He got involved in trafficking drugs and was threatened at knifepoint by a rival gang. “I was always going missing from home or school and worrying about my mum and when I look back, I didn’t like the direction my life was going in,” he explained. “When you’re young and getting involved with dangerous groups, it makes you feel like a big man, but that’s not the way to do it.” In an attempt to take himself away from this situation, Precieux joined Croydon Amateur Boxing Club and got involved with Gloves not Gunz, a community organisation that is supported by the Foundation with funding from the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association. “When I came to the gym after getting in trouble, I wasn’t judged and was greeted with open arms. They understood my situation because they came from the same background.” After his involvement, Precieux wanted to give back to his community and volunteer with the group to help other young people in the same situation. Foundation and Gloves not Gunz staff worked with Precieux to help him understand the importance of being a role model and setting a good example for young people.

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

Five years after attending his first community football session, Precieux completed his boxing activator qualification, and noticing the improvements he had made in his commitment, mentality and confidence, Gloves not Gunz rewarded him with a job as the organisation’s first Youth Mentor. Precieux is also now one of the coaches delivering the Palace for Life Foundation’s community boxing programme, and is running sessions at local schools to help tackle issues like youth violence. “Seeing the kids being interactive, getting active and at the same time learning valuable life lessons makes me happy,” he said. Having moved away from gangs and crime, he is now looking forward to further education, starting at the University of Queen Mary later this month.

IN FOCUS 71

Jason Lokilo

I’m looking forward to playing first-team football this season at Lorient. I’m 20 this month, so the most important thing for me is to keep playing games, and hopefully first-team football. I’ve been discussing it with the club and my managers for a while, so we’ll see how it goes!

I’ve been in London now for three years and I’m feeling really settled. It is a bit like Brussels – it’s busy and there are a lot of nice people. A lot of the players here speak French which has helped me too and I’ve got plenty of friends in the under-23s who are almost like family.

It was nice to be involved with the first-team again during the summer. Every time I get to play with them, I am aiming to progress and work hard. When you are a young player, it is good to look up to the experienced Premier League players. After a while you get used to being around them, and try to play like you do with the younger boys. The French speakers have made it easier for me when I get the chance to be around them.

It’s been just over a year since I made my Palace debut, and it’s nice to look back on it. I was perhaps a bit too young at the time, but I have improved physically so now I would be more prepared if I got the chance to play for them again. It was a really nice feeling to play at Selhurst Park, and I want to do it again one day.

In every game I’m trying to get either an assist or a goal. I scored twice for the under-23s against Nottingham Forest and got an assist against Crewe Alexandra, and now I just want to carry that on. I’ve been trying to be more effective and add something to my game, and it’s a good feeling when you score so I hope to keep doing it. I’ve been told that in training I don’t shoot enough! I always want to improve and for an attacking player it’s good to be on the scoresheet. I scored nine times last season and I already have two this season, so I’ll try to keep shooting!

PALACE

v

SOUTHAMPTON

I’m not surprised to see Aaron Wan-Bissaka do so well. I’ve played with him for the under-23s for two years, and I’m really happy for him. I’m sure he’ll carry on kicking on and I’m proud to see him playing week in, week out in the Premier League. It’s great there’s a pathway to the first-team here. There is no real pressure on the under-23s to retain the title this year. It’s still very early in the season so we can’t say if we’re going to win it or not, but we’ve got six points out of nine already so we have to just keep winning games. After January, you’ll be able to tell if we’re going to be able to challenge or not, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for their results whilst I’m in France.

Crystal palace 0 Liverpool 2 Monday 20th August 2018

10-man Palace tasted defeat in their first home Premier League game of the campaign as Liverpool netted late in both halves to leave south London with all the points. Roy Hodgson’s team held firm in the face of the rampant Reds’ strikeforce for almost the whole of the first half, and nearly took the lead themselves when Andros Townsend thundered a shot off the crossbar in their best attack of the opening half. However, a controversial penalty award changed the complexion of the game when Mohamed Salah went down

under little pressure from Mamadou Sakho, allowing James Milner to tuck home from 12 yards to send his side into the break ahead. The Eagles rallied in the second 45 but their task was made harder when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for bringing down Salah en-route to goal, but as Hodgson’s team pressed to gain a last-gasp point against the odds, Sadio Mane finished off a swift counter-attack to net his sixth goal in eight appearances against his favourite opponents and seal the win for the Merseysiders.

Watford 2 Crystal palace 1 Sunday 26th August 2018

The Eagles suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since March as Watford ran out winners at Vicarage Road, despite Wilfried Zaha becoming the club’s all-time top Premier League scorer. Roy Hodgson’s team were the better in a feisty first half but Ben Foster pulled off a pair of good saves to deny Christian Benteke and James McArthur, but after the break the Hornets were quicker out of the traps and on 53 minutes Etienne Capoue embarked on a 40-yard run before finding Roberto Pereyra who curled home.

Then on 70 minutes Jose Holebas attempted a cross but a mixture of a mis-cue and the wind saw it sail into the top corner, but eight minutes later Palace were given a lifeline when Zaha played a one-two with Max Meyer to flash a shot through Foster’s legs. The Eagles just needed one more big chance to complete a dramatic comeback, and in the fourth minute of injury-time it arrived when a corner was sent into a packed penalty area, but Joel Ward sent a free header fractions wide.
