THE PLAYERS WILL LEARN FROM BOURNEMOUTH, AND HOPEFULLY THAT KEY LESSON WILL STAND US IN GOOD STEAD LATER IN THE CAMPAIGN

THE MANAGER 05

goals will soon start to flow I would like to welcome Nuno Espirito Santo and his Wolves team to Selhurst Park and, albeit belatedly, congratulate him and his players on achieving promotion and for starting this campaign so well.

By contrast it was bitterly disappointing to come away from the Vitality Stadium on Monday night without at least a point after we put in an encouraging performance against Bournemouth. I thought we grew into the game and showed great character after falling behind so early to a welltaken goal. By the end of the first half, however, we had established ourselves as the team with the upper hand, and we capitalised on that after the break by scoring a good goal of our own thanks to Patrick van Aanholt. At that point, we looked perhaps the more likely team to win the match. However, we let a point slip through our grasp by giving away a needless free-kick which handed them a dangerous opportunity to send the ball into the area at a crucial time, and when you create that situation, anything can happen. Unfortunately for us, it did. Mamadou Sakho caught Jefferson Lerma with his elbow, and the referee was entitled to award a penalty at a point in the game where it was extremely hard for us to regroup. The players will learn from that, and hopefully that key lesson will stand us in good stead later in the campaign. Last time we were here against Newcastle United, it was one of those days where the ball simply wouldn’t cross the line, and the woodwork wasn’t our friend. However these games happen in football, but I would be more concerned if we weren’t creating chances at all. With the attacking players we have in this squad, I’m confident the goals will soon start to flow.

PALACE

v

WOLVES

That was evident at West Bromwich Albion last week where we progressed into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in style. It was a dream to watch as a manager as every player put in an excellent display. We were clinical in attack and netted three good goals, plus we were resolute at the back and hardly gave our opponents a sniff. It was great to also see some of those players who have been on the fringes this season put in some fine displays as they got more minutes under their belts. It’s a competition that isn’t too much of a priority for us right now – league points are much more important – and as we have had in our previous two ties we’ve been handed another long trip to Middlesbrough. We shall need a performance like the one against West Brom if we are to survive in the competition and reach the last eight. It’s back to league action today against a Wolves team who have impressed many so far this season. We’re really hoping we can get our first home goal and points on the board, so rest assured we’ll be doing our best to head into the international break on a high. Enjoy the game!

WHEN WE PLAY AT SELHURST IN FRONT OF OUR FANS WE HAVE A BIG ADVANTAGE AND WE'LL TRY AND USE IT TO WIN THE GAME

THE CAPTAIN 07

this team deserves a little bit of luck Since the start of the season, we have been better than our opponents in 90% of our matches, but we have been unlucky in a number of those where we haven’t taken the points we deserve.

That was the case against Newcastle two weeks ago. It was very frustrating because I felt we deserved to win that game, but we only got a point. I nearly scored with the free-kick and thought the ball was going in, but unfortunately it hit the post and once again this season I was unlucky. There were some positives we can take - we controlled the game and we didn’t let them have a lot of chances, especially in the second half. Defensively we were very good and reacted well when we lost the ball, and Wayne also made some saves which gives the rest of the team confidence. He is a very important part of our team and we are really happy with how he has performed during the season so far. I watched the West Bromwich Albion game at home and thought we did very well. We were much better than our opponent and we could have scored maybe five or six goals, so that was very important after Newcastle. Some other players have had chances in those difficult cup games and played well, and that’s very important for our manager because he doesn’t think he has only 12 or 13 players that he can use, he has more. We then went to Bournemouth on Monday and if you put a line between us winning and losing, we would have been much closer to winning. At 1-1 I was happy and I thought we could win the game, but when you concede in the 87th minute from a penalty it’s very hard to come back.

PALACE

v

WOLVES

Again we played well, controlled the game and had possession but maybe didn’t create as many chances as we would have wanted. We were dangerous in and around their box, however we missed the last pass in the final third and once again we dropped a point. I like to say if you want the luck, you have to deserve it. As a team, I think we do deserve it but if you don’t have the luck, then you have to try harder to do better anyway. In my opinion, we have played only one bad game and that was against Southampton, so we just have to put in more work in training and in the games, and hopefully we won’t need the luck. Wolves come here today and I have been very impressed with them; for me they have been the biggest surprise of the season. I’ve watched a few of their games including the one against Burnley where they played very well, and they have an interesting gameplan with quick, clever players. It’ll be a tough game for sure, but that is the same for both teams. I expect a good game, but when we play at Selhurst in front of our fans we have a big advantage and we’ll try to use it to win the game. Make some noise!

THE PLAYERS AND MANAGER BELIEVE THE NOISE YOU CREATE MAKES THEM PERFORM BETTER, SO WE MUST DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO HARNESS THAT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE TEAM

THE CHAIRMAN 09

make today one to remember Welcome to the directors, players and staff of Wolves to south London today for the first time since New Years’ Day in 2013, and of course to all Palace supporters too.

I must begin by congratulating Wolves on their return to the Premier League, and their hugely impressive start. I have a lot of respect for the club, and they truly deserved to win the Championship last season, playing some magnificent football along the way. It looks as though they’ve invested well in their squad, and I have no doubt that today’s match will be hugely competitive. Since my last notes, we secured a point against Newcastle United when I felt we deserved all three, had a great win away at West Bromwich Albion to send us through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, but then suffered away at Bournemouth to a late penalty which was bitterly disappointing for us all. That said, we sit in 13th position with seven points from seven games. If we go into next week’s international break with 10 from eight games and the makings of an exciting cup run on the horizon, that’s a result I think we’d all have taken at the start of the season had we been offered it. You will no doubt have seen the club’s statement on the creation of a dedicated ‘singing section’ in the Lower Holmesdale next season. This has been one of the most difficult decisions we have had to make in my time at the club and it certainly hasn’t been taken lightly. It’s a well-trodden football soundbite that fans are the twelfth man, but take it from me – our players and the manager really believe that the atmosphere you all create at Selhurst Park is something that makes this club truly special.

PALACE

v

WOLVES

Put simply, they believe the noise you create makes them perform better, so we must do everything in our power to harness that for the benefit of the team. We will work hard to thank the small number of affected supporters for their sacrifice, as well as trying to make their move as painless as possible. We know it’s an upheaval but hope they understand our reasoning. Speaking of the future, there are a couple of young players I’d like to congratulate. Firstly, our ManBetX Player of the Month for September Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and secondly Nya Kirby who has signed a new contract. Nya has made great progress in the academy and with England’s age groups, and hopefully will force his way into the first-team reckoning soon. We have arranged a friendly against Dulwich Hamlet this coming Thursday, and Roy will play a strong team on the night. I’d urge you all to come along and support a club whose treatment at the hands of property developers has been well documented. As a club, we feel it’s important to support other teams in our patch who need our help, and that’s why all the proceeds are going to Dulwich. It should be a great night. Finally, and most importantly, let’s all get behind Roy and his team today. Let’s make it one to remember. Up The Palace!

10 TODAY'S GAME

Crystal Palace v Wolves // Saturday 6th October // Selhurst Park

Today's game Palace face off against Wolves for the first time in the top tier since January 1981, still searching for their 100th Premier League win and their 200th in the top-flight after Monday’s late loss at Bournemouth. The Molineux club returned to this level by winning last season’s Championship title, and have taken to their new surroundings impressively by collecting 12 points from their opening seven games - the best start by a newly-promoted club for a decade. After failing to win any of their first three games this season, Wolves have now won three of their last four and only the current top three sides in the division are on a longer unbeaten run than Nuno Espirito Santo’s team’s five-match streak. Palace meanwhile are still searching for their first point and goal at Selhurst Park, but they might be buoyed by Wolves only winning two of their last 21 Premier League away games, though both of those came in London including a 1-0 win against West Ham United last month. It’s been nearly six years since the sides last met, which came on New Year’s Day 2013 as two Andre Moritz free-kicks and a Yannick Bolasie strike clinched a 3-1 win for Ian Holloway’s Eagles. Roy Hodgson will be hoping his team can end their home woes by securing a third straight win at Selhurst Park over Wolves for the first time ever.

Patrick van aanholt has been involved in eight Premier League goals in 2018 (6 goals, 2 assists), only Wilfried Zaha has more for Palace in that time (11).

Newsroom NEW SINGING SECTION TO BE IMPLEMENTED The club have confirmed that they are committed to facilitating a larger dedicated “singing section” in the Lower Holmesdale Stand next season, to further build upon our fans’ reputation as the creators of one of the best atmospheres in the Premier League. It is hoped this new area will allow our most vocal supporters to act as a catalyst to make the Holmesdale Stand into an even greater wall of noise and supportive force, and help boost the noise levels inside Selhurst Park even further. The club do recognise that this move will cause some initial disruption, but having weighed up all the views and opinions there appears to be overwhelming backing from the supporter base for this idea to become a reality. It’s unavoidable that this will result in some of our most valued, long-standing season ticket holders being displaced, but the club have worked hard to keep this to a relatively small amount and are committed to working hard to discover the best alternatives available to them going forward. All affected supporters will be contacted imminently to discuss these with them individually.

EAGLES FACE DULWICH HAMLET IN FRIENDLY Roy Hodgson will manage a strong Palace XI side as they take on Dulwich Hamlet FC in friendly action on Thursday 11th October at 7pm, with all proceeds from the match going to the non-league club. Cash-strapped Hamlet have been struggling financially following a legal battle with their property development owners, which has seen them forced to leave their Champion Hill home and groundshare with Tooting & Mitcham FC at Imperial Fields, which is where this fundraiser with the Eagles will take place with the venue situated on Bishopsford Road in Morden. Tickets are currently on sale now from the Dulwich Hamlet box office, priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and DHFC season ticket holders. If you want to attend this game against the National League South side, you’ll have to be quick as tickets are expected to sell out extremely quickly, so please buy early to avoid disappointment.

KIRBY SIGNS NEW DEAL Palace development midfielder Nya Kirby has signed a long-term contract with the Eagles, with the 18-yearold’s deal being extended until June 2022. Kirby signed professional terms with the Eagles in February 2017, having previously on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, and was a member of England's victorious FIFA U17 World Cup-winning squad later that year. At club level he has featured in pre-season friendlies for Palace including the 2017 Premier League Asia Trophy, and was named on the first-team bench against his former club Spurs in February 2018. Speaking about his deal, Kirby said: “I see this as an amazing achievement and I am very excited to have the chance to sign this new contract. I know though that the hard work starts here, and I need to keep working on my game to give myself the best opportunities for the future.”

It was a red Liverpool home shirt from the early 1990s when they were sponsored by Candy – I can’t remember if it had a name or number on the back though!

It was at Walsall and I can roughly remember what it was like – it was red and baggy. I liked it at the time, but looking back I probably shouldn’t have!

It is the one I was wearing when I scored for Palace up at Anfield a couple of seasons ago. It’s not hanging on my wall yet but will be at some stage.

This season, Ian King celebrates a century of the Palace programme as he charts its evolution from a humble pamphlet to its current form.

Part IV

1934 - 1939

28 PROGRAMME HISTORY

1934/35 & 1935/36

1936/37

The matchday programmes for these seasons continued with a cover featuring an orange hue, but the photograph of a goalkeeper in action was changed to a drawing in similar vein. There was a more jazzy design to the front while the back page usually carried adverts, travel details or a forthcoming fixture. There were eight white inside pages with no set layout, but “Tales of the Glaziers” by ‘Diamond’ continued with its reports of games and other news, as well as The Crystal Palace Band’s playlist. The opposition usually got a mention in some form, while a sign of the times was the notice of a charge of 6d for cars and 3d for cycles in the car park. The usual line-up and tables were incorporated, but for the first time details of players’ appearances and goals scored were produced. The 1934/35 edition contained a series of ‘Palace Sportraits’ being a drawing of a Glaziers player or official, but was replaced by adverts the following campaign.

The club went back to The Modern Press to print the programme but retained the outer cover in keeping with the previous season, however with a different drawing of goalmouth action and no date or opposition details. The number of pages inside increased to 20 but half of these were adverts, but despite their increased quantity the programme had a quality feel about it and remained at twopence. There was a more regular format with “Editorial Notes” by ‘Glazier’, replacing “Tales of the Glaziers” starting the written content, and there was a return for the jokes on “While You Wait”. Features such as “Our Post Bag” and “Gleanings” appeared from time to time and the line-ups and league tables always appeared in the centre, bordered by adverts that included Milletts then as now located in the centre of Croydon. One page was devoted to the Supporters Club and another to Palace’s visitors, then towards the back of the programme the half-time scoreboard grid was followed by fixtures and results.

PROGRAMME HISTORY 29

1937/38

1938/39

A redesign of the front cover came about with white paper being used and three other colours added to highlight a new drawing of goalmouth action. Again there were 20 inside pages, half of which were adverts. Internally there was little change as each programme began with “Editorial Notes” and a settled sequence of topics that included ‘Our Visitors’, a cartoon and the line-ups in the centre pages. The Supporters Club featured as did for the first time a separate “With The Reserves” piece. Any snippets of news or views appeared irregularly entitled “Items of Interest”, “Current Topics” or “Gleanings” and a page about a Palace player or official made a welcome return. One page contained “While You Wait”, the Crystal Palace Band playlist and forthcoming home games. In December the front cover illustrated was tweaked, which didn’t affect the action drawing but utilised a font from that era to give it a more-modern look and an ongoing improvement at the same price.

With the club changing the playing kit to white shirts with black shorts and black and white socks, the front cover kept the same design but also had to adapt to the new colour scheme so the striking use of red and blue disappeared. In every respect the programme content was the same as in 1937/38 but there was the addition of “Notes From The Boardroom” at the start of each edition giving their view of recent happenings. The inclusion of this item meant that “Palace Personalities” and “With The Reserves” only made sporadic appearances but the latter was covered in the editorial. The programme for the game against Clapton (now Leyton) Orient on 1st October opened with a note from the board following the return of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain the previous day from his meeting with Adolf Hitler declaring “peace in our time”. Headed “The National Crisis” the directors informed supporters that football would continue until otherwise instructed, and that the national anthem would be played by The Crystal Palace Band before the start of the game.

Palace supporters cannot think about previous meetings with Wolves without thinking of one man. When they needed a miracle most, the Eagles got one in the form of right-back Danny Butterfield scoring a sixminute hat-trick against today’s opponents to secure a crucial passage into the FA Cup fifth round in 2010, and here he discusses one of the most incredible nights in Selhurst Park’s history.

40 DANNY BUTTERFIELD

February 2010 was a dark time to be associated with Crystal Palace. Financial difficulties had seen the club forced into administration, and a 10-point deduction transformed them from Championship promotion contenders to relegation candidates. The future looked terminal, but amongst the darkness came a match which temporarily brought the smiles back. With any income welcome, the FA Cup offered a glimmer of hope. Suddenly, a fourth round replay with Wolves had huge ramifications for Neil Warnock’s Palace, with nearly £350,000 on the line should they win, thanks to prize money and a lucrative televised meeting with Aston Villa in round five. The unlikeliest man would secure that vital cash - Danny Butterfield. Reflecting on that now-historic night in SE25, he said: “We knew the cup offered the club finances, and

you also think ‘if we win, then we might get paid and I don't have to worry about shuffling my bank balance about to pay the mortgage’. “We were selling Victor Moses to Wigan so that freed up a place up top which I was never going to fill, but in training in a five-a-side I was playing up front with Alan Lee and scored a couple, and Neil being Neil said ‘we’ll go with that tomorrow’. It was a little bit comical but it was also a bit of a freebie as we were thinking ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’” The right-back started in attack alongside Lee and Darren Ambrose, but by half-time and with Palace holding the Premier League side to a 0-0 scoreline, the then-30-year-old thought his brief stint as a striker was over. “My first half performance was terrible!” he laughed. “I was thinking I might get dragged off, or

I told you you’d do it! moved somewhere else because it wasn’t great. We went a bit more direct to Al and I was gambling off him, and in the second half it seemed to click.” And within the blink of an eye, Butterfield stunned the footballing world. In just six minutes, he had headed home from close-range from a corner, then slid in his second and third using both feet after latching onto flick-ons from Julian Speroni’s booming kicks downfield. Amongst the whirlwind, the Eagles cult hero was left with a cocktail of emotions after netting the club’s fastest-ever hat-trick - and a ‘perfect’ one to boot - to clinch the much-needed cash via a 3-1 scoreline. “It was a mixture of comical and disbelief,” he said. “Because it happened so quickly it was actually funny! I knew the lads were happy it was happening to me because I was the dressing room joker and been

at the club for so long, but as daft as it sounds it was also embarrassing at the same time because that’s not what I do! “Of course I enjoyed it and it’s something I treasure at the back of mind. I’m sure the record will be broken one day, but to be a part of the history at Palace and a club that was a massive part of my life for eight years was a real bonus. “After the game Neil said ‘I told you you’d do it!’ He took all of the credit and didn’t let me do the press, but I didn’t mind that because he had the guts to give me the opportunity. It was typical Neil – who else would have put me up top? It was a free hit for me to do something on a night when there were no expectations on my shoulders, so it was a great experience - but I should have had a fourth!”

CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS 2017/18

The manager After a nomadic playing career that saw him feature in goal infrequently for teams including Porto, Deportivo La Coruna and Dynamo Moscow, Nuno received his first managerial job at Rio Ave in 2012. He led them to qualification for the UEFA Europa League which prompted Valencia to hand him their top job, and after 18 months in Spain he returned to Porto. After a year there he quickly found a new home at Wolves, and guided them to the Championship title in his first season in England.

Club legend The centre-back spent his entire 20-year playing career at the heart of the Wolves defence, and his performances saw the club win all three of their league titles and an FA Cup during their golden period. Individual honours came in the form of the 1952 Football Writers’ Player of the Year and finishing runner-up in the voting for the 1957 Ballon d’Or, as well as 105 England caps including a record 90 coming as captain of the side. He is immortalised by a statue outside Molineux.

After breaking Wolves’ and the Championship’s transfer record, the £15.8 million man lived up to the hype by winning the title and being named in the Team of the Year. Neves made his Porto debut at 17 and became captain only a year later, and was a regular for Portugal’s under-21s before he was handed his first full caps in 2015. The Mexican striker has netted twice so far since making his loan move from Benfica, and could well be one of the shrewdest signings of the summer. He has plenty of pedigree, having represented Mexico at seven major international tournaments since winning the 2012 Olympics. His career started in his homeland with Club America where he netted 36 goals in 96 games, leading to a move to Atletico Madrid. After a difficult season, he switched to Benfica where he won two championships. WWFC Games: 7 WWFC Goals: 2

Things you didn't know... ABOUT WOLVES

s r e t a W s i r Ch By

Each week, Chris Waters delves into the archives to find some obscure facts about Palace’s opponents. Here, he looks back at all things Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The club were originally known as St Lukes FC and were founded in 1877 by two school pupils taught at the church of the same name who were given a football by their headmaster, and in 1879 they merged with Blakenhall Wanderers to form Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 1891 the famous black and gold colours first appeared, chosen due to the city’s motto “out of darkness cometh light”.

Wolves were one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888, and played the First Division's first ever match against Aston Villa. They had a very good inaugural season, finishing third as well as runners-up in the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Preston North End.

Being such an old club has its advantages when it comes to records and firsts! The club were the first ever English side to be awarded a penalty, in 1891 against Accrington at Molineux. It was the Irish Football Association who proposed the introduction of the penalty kick that year, and it was duly introduced in time for the new season. The spot-kick was converted by Billy Heath and Wolves went on to win the match 5-0.

In 1744, the Molineux family bought the land on which the current stadium is now located. They built Molineux House which was eventually re-purposed as a hotel, and then under new owners in 1860 it was made a leisure centre and known as the Molineux Grounds. A local brewery then leased the land to Wolves, and Molineux Stadium was constructed, hosting its first game in 1889.

Wolves were the first club to score 7,000 league goals, a landmark achieved when Seol Ki-Hyeon netted in a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park in December 2005. The South Korean international opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before Andrew Johnson grabbed an equaliser just before half-time. The season did not pan out as expected for either club, with Wolves falling just short of the play-offs and the Eagles stumbling in the semi-finals to Watford.

Wolves’ record goalscorer is Steve Bull, who netted a remarkable 306 goals in 13 years, including 18 hat-tricks. However, his professional debut was actually for arch-rivals West Bromwich Albion in November 1985 against Palace in the Full Member’s Cup, before being sold to Wolves alongside another player for just £65,000. Other achievements include the club record for goals in a single season (52 in 1987/88) and 13 caps for England.

Wolves are the ninth-most successful English club - just behind Manchester City - in terms of trophies, with the heyday of the side coming in the 1950s when they won the First Division title three times. The club has spent a remarkable 114 out of 120 seasons in the top two tiers of English football.

DREAM TEAM 53

A foot in

Both camps

In each edition, we will try and form the best starting line-up possible comprised of players who have represented both the Eagles and today’s opponents, and see which club comes out on top when it comes to appearances and goals.

GK: Wayne Hennessey – CPFC 113/0 WWFC 166/0 The Welshman started at Wolves where he won the Championship in 2008/09 and kept them in the top-flight for three seasons, before joining Palace in 2014.

CM: Mark Lazarus – CPFC 70/17 WWFC 9/3 Lazarus was Wolves’ record purchase at £27,500 in 1961, but he didn’t stay long and would later play a key role in Palace’s first ever top-flight promotion in 1968/69.

RB: John Humphrey – CPFC 203/2 WWFC 164/3 Another player who got his break at Molineux, Humphrey would play for six years with Wolves before joining top-flight Palace after a stint at Charlton Athletic.

LM: Bakary Sako – CPFC 50/8 WWFC 124/38 The Malian starred helping Wolves out of League One in 2013/14 and he would go on to score some crucial goals for Palace in the Premier League. He joined West Bromwich Albion this week.

CB: Eric Young – CPFC 204/17 WWFC 40/2 The man dubbed as Ninja was a cult hero in SE25 but he actually made his last professional appearance for Wolves back in 1996.

ST: Dougie Freedman – CPFC 368/108 WWFC 36/13 The Eagles’ sixth-highest goalscorer spent less than a season at Wolves before eventually returning to south London for a second spell via Nottingham Forest.

CB: Kevin Muscat - CPFC 61/3 WWFC 201/15 Brought to England by the Eagles in 1995, the notorious hardman helped win Premier League promotion in 1997 before spending five seasons at Wolves. LB: Mark Kennedy – CPFC 48/1 WWFC 187/14 A tricky left winger for both clubs, Kennedy ended his career in defence but will be forever remembered at Wolves for scoring in their Division One play-off final win in 2003. RM: Terry Wharton – CPFC 20/1 WWFC 242/83 A prolific scorer for Wolves during the 1960s despite playing on the wing, Wharton famously netted a hat-trick in a 7-0 win against rivals West Brom but struggled at Palace. CM: Geoff Thomas – CPFC 249/35 WWFC 56/8 Captain of Palace during their golden period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Thomas joined Wolves after relegation in 1993 but injuries hampered his time in the Black Country.

Ian King & Terry Byfield This season we are celebrating the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of Palace's promotionwinning campaigns via a series of season reviews, interviews and classic match reports, detailing the key moments that saw the return of top-flight football to Selhurst Park.

Story of the

O

Season

n the last day of August, near neighbours Charlton Athletic came to Selhurst Park for an encounter that attracted just a few short of 23,000 spectators with both clubs riding high in the Second Division. Things started badly for the host who found themselves two down by the eighth minute, but a couple of minutes before the break Palace hit back. First Colin Taylor cracked in a shot following a John Sewell free-kick, then Bobby Woodruff unleashed one of his long throws into the penalty area for Blyth to charge through and net the equaliser. 15 minutes into the second half the Glaziers went ahead through Cliff Jackson and then the Addicks smacked a spot-kick against the bar, but almost immediately the visitors got themselves an equaliser to complete the scoring at 3-3. A busy September brought six games starting with a League Cup tie at home to Preston North End, and again Palace netted three goals to see off the Lilywhites 3-1 for only their fourth victory since the competition began in 1960, with Cliff Jackson on the scoresheet again with a brace. Three days later it got even better against a struggling Carlisle United with five goals planted in their net without reply. Steve Kember opened the scoring and Palace were 2-0 up at the break when Mark Lazarus was set up by Taylor, who helped himself to two goals in the second half before Kember added his second.

Part 2

It was an unlucky Friday 13th as Palace made the short trip to Craven Cottage and turned in an awful performance. Fulham’s England international Johnny Haynes ran the game and frankly the Cottagers could have had a hatful of goals, but the only one came around the half-hour mark when a former Tonbridge fullback recently converted to centre-forward rounded John

Jackson to score - his name was Malcolm Macdonald. Off the pitch, work was going ahead on the site of the new stand along the Park Road side, with all the grass banking removed and work began on installing 62 piles. The team had to be shuffled around again back at Selhurst the following Saturday as Preston made their second visit in the month. Lazarus was suspended following an altercation at Bury in August so Kember moved out to the right, Blyth to inside left, Taylor returned while the long-serving Terry Long partnered John McCormick. Preston were certainly an improved side for this encounter and inflicted the first home defeat of the season with Cliff Jackson only scoring late on in a 2-1 defeat. The League Cup third round sent Palace over to east London to face Leyton Orient and with Lazarus still serving his suspension, Trevor Dawkins was given a rare run-out in his place. The former West Ham United player put in a prodigious amount of midfield work, and in an evenly-matched contest the only goal of the game

PALACE

v

came via a 30-yard shot from Taylor – not one of his hardest but sufficient to deceive the Orient keeper and set up a fourth round meeting with First Division leaders Leeds United at Selhurst. For the trip to Portsmouth on 28th September Blyth was back partnering McCormick and Long featured at right-back in what turned out to be his 480th and final first-team appearance for the club. Another early goal was conceded but Jackson soon equalised only for Bert Head’s team go behind again after 18 minutes, and then Woodruff put Palace back on level terms six minutes later. Just before the break Kember backheeled the ball home following a Woodruff throw-in to give Palace a slender advantage, but Pompey ensured the spoils were shared midway through the second half, and the month ended with the club in eighth position in the table.

Nicholas You made 37 league appearances in that promotion-winning season, how you do recall it? It was a good time, a memorable one certainly from a personal point of view. The nice thing was that there was no fear, and I just wanted to get on the field and do the best for the players you are playing with and the supporters who have paid their money to be entertained. The team had such a special bond and the drive and determination of the club was great at the time, so I think we were all swept along a little bit and drove each other on to success. There was only one way things were going to go in the end, and that was promotion. What was it like working with Terry Venables on a day-to-day basis? When I came up from Wales at 15 Terry was playercoach under Malcolm Allison. Terry has been looked upon as ahead of his time and working that closely with him I can see why, Whether it was tactics, preparing for games or getting the better of your opponent, he had that extra know-how even then that made him special. He would take players aside and discuss making subtle changes to improve your game. Terry suggested to me about moving into midfield as I had a lot of energy, passion and will to win. He put me in that

central position, we moved up a league and I went on to have a good career playing that role so it was another good call from the boss. How important was it that many of you had played together in the successful youth team? It was absolutely massive. We had been together since we were around 15 years of age and Malcolm Allison signed us all. There was a great feeling amongst the group and a real togetherness on and off the field as our careers moved at a fast pace. We enjoyed the success at youth level and then going on to do what we did as a squad a few years later to win promotion to the First Division.

PALACE

v

WOLVES

THE GLORY YEARS 59

In the early days of the season, did you feel any expectation was on the group? No, not really. I must say that going up into the firstteam squad you didn’t feel a massive pressure and we were given a lot of confidence and enthusiasm when Terry took over. The fans were fantastic and really took this young group of players on board. The lads had played in Youth Cup games with 17,000 watching so I think in a funny way that prepared us for what we were coming up against in that 1978/79 season. At what point in the season could you see that the club might achieve something special? I remember around December we only won a couple of games but the important thing was we were taking draws and getting something from them, and as I say we had no fear factor and our aim was just to go out and win games. From the management through to the players, we had that feeling that we had done our homework on the opposition to counter their threats and our quality could get us points.

PALACE

To win the league as champions was the icing on the cake. It was a Friday night but again Terry had thought of everything. Rather than being at home all day we had lunch at The Queens Hotel in Crystal Palace, then rested before going down to the ground for the game and the place was rocking. Thankfully it was perfect as once again we showed our quality and finished the job.

or 45 pulsating minutes, Palace brought a touch of the good old days back to Selhurst Park on Tuesday night. Bright and Wright on the scoresheet, attacks coming in electrifying waves down both flanks and the middle – close your eyes and it might have been the start of last season when Steve Coppell’s men soared to the top of the Second Division. This time, however, it was the visitors who had arrived as table-toppers, complete with a proud unbeaten record. But in a first half of midfield superiority, and in which they clearly had the sharper edge up front, Palace reaffirmed their status as promotion candidates with the ideal follow-up to Saturday’s first league win. Before the kick-off, striker Mark Bright had been presented with the Shoot/Adidas Golden Shoe award for his scoring exploits last season. And within nine minutes, he had lived up to his reputation. Skipper Geoff Thomas, enjoying his best game since assuming the captaincy, fed transfer-listed winger Neil Redfearn on the right. He neatly side-stepped fullback David Hill before sending in a perfectly flighted cross for Bright to nod home. With some mammoth clearances by goalkeeper Brian Parkin causing confusion in the Ipswich defence, Palace continued to threaten, and inside six minutes their persistence again paid off.

Mark Bright

Once more, Thomas and Redfearn provided the inspiration, Thomas intercepting a pass near the centre circle for Redfearn to chip a probing pass towards Wright on the edge of the box. From there on, Wright’s own mastery took over as he rounded Tony Humes then tricked the ball past ‘keeper Craig Forrest before slotting the ball into an empty net. PALACE

THE GLORY YEARS 61

With Ipswich snatching the initiative, Palace began to wobble, and even that two-goal lead appeared a little precarious. Sparked by the classy Romeo Zondervan, the visitors launched a series of raids of their own, forcing some smart defending from the Londoners’ back four. But with Gary O’Reilly once again marshalling the defence and Jeff Hopkins settling in alongside him, the threatened breakthrough failed to materialise. Palace: Parkin, Hone, Burke, Pardew, Hopkins, O’Reilly, Redfearn, Thomas, Bright, Wright (Salako), Barber. Sub: Madden (not used). Ipswich: Forrest, Yallop, Hill, Zondervan, Humes (Linighan), D’Avray, Lowe, Dozzell, Milton, Atkinson, Wark. Sub: Stockwell (not used).

Ipswich, though clearly rattled, refused to lie down and, after Barber’s low cross had been narrowly headed wide by the inrushing Pardew, Parkin had to be alert at the other end to hold a firm header by Jason Dozzell from a well worked set piece. Yet all too often the visitors’ front men fell victim to a clinically efficient Palace offside trap, with David Lowe and the foraging Dalian Atkinson the most frequent offenders. Fine work by Wright on the left set up a screaming drive by Thomas which cleared the crossbar by inches, then Pardew saw two attempts finish wide of the target before half-time. Palace emerged for the second period a different side. True, Wright nearly wrapped things up with a 53rd minute bicycle kick which had to be tipped over the bar by Forrest. But from then on in it was wholesale football, with the home side cutting out their middle men in favour of a series of hopeful punts from defence. PALACE

KELVIN’S STORY Kelvin is one of the many footballers who play with the Croydon Eagles Mental Health Team each week. The support he has found there has not only benefited his mental health, but also helped him find a job and make new friends. The Croydon Eagles are supported by Palace for Life Foundation and Mind in Croydon, and forms a vital hub where adults facing mental health challenges have been playing football together for more than eight years. It gives players the opportunity to meet with others who are facing similar difficulties to them. Kelvin’s struggle with mental health started in young adulthood. He explained: “My mental health journey has been a challenge from time to time.” However, Kelvin decided to try playing with the Croydon Eagles and his “great passion for the game” kept him coming back. The benefits that the football sessions have since brought to Kelvin’s life are considerable. They give him a sense of release, allowing him to forget any concerns and focus on the game instead. He enthused: “When I’m playing football, I don’t worry about the stresses of the world.” Moreover, Kelvin has built important relationships with the other players on the team. They have become friends whom he can not only have fun with, but turn to for support and understanding as well. He said: “I get to communicate with the lads and we share what we’re going through and have a bit of banter. After football, it’s not over. Sometimes we go to the pub, relax, watch a bit of football and chat.” Kelvin also received support from the Foundation

with his career and has secured a job as a support worker, helping people who have learning disabilities or show challenging behaviour. “They were amazing for me because they helped me fix my CV,” he added. “I was unemployed when I first came in contact with them and now I have a job. I thank them so much for that.” Reflecting on the past few years he said: “It felt tough because I was going through a hard time. Now I’ve managed to understand myself, and my mental health far better.” If you are interested in finding out more about the Croydon Eagles, contact michaelharrington@palaceforlife.org.

Wednesday 10th October is World Mental Health Awareness Day and members of the Croydon Eagles are at today’s game to mark the occasion!

I’ve been at Palace Ladies for three years now and things have changed massively. The quality of the players and backroom staff has improved, and even little things like our kit and the support we get from the men’s team has got better and better. Things are completely different now. My coach calls me the Rolls Royce of the team because I’m slow, steady and elegant! I’m a defensive midfielder so I look to play defence-splitting passes and be the playmaker, so I guess it’s quite a compliment actually! Our recent results don’t necessarily reflect how the matches have gone. We’ve put in some really good performances but unfortunately not come away with the right results, but we’re working hard and over the next couple of months we’re hoping we get them. The pace of training is at another level now and everyone is fighting for their positions in every single session and putting in 110% which is good. I live with our captain Freya and it’s nice to boss her about at home! I’m the clean one so I’m always tidying up after her, and while she’s bossy on the pitch I tend to tell her to leave it there! We have a great team spirit - the new girls who have come in have slotted in perfectly. They’re quite loud and big characters so the camaraderie is pretty good, even if the results haven’t gone our way.

Playing Chelsea was a huge learning curve. Four seasons ago I was playing in the fifth tier so to now be playing against international players is incredible they’re so fast! It was a great opportunity for us, so it was cool; I was maybe a little starstruck in the tunnel beforehand, but when the game kicked off they were just another team. The big games for me this season are the Charlton ones. We’ve had a few players go across there this summer and just like the men’s games, our matches with them are a bit tasty with some strong tackles going in and everyone wanting to get one up on each other. It’s getting more competitive each time we play! I’m a sports business consultant, so I’m basically always talking about sport! We advise professional sports rights holders on their marketing and sales strategies, and I also recently did some work on the Selhurst Park development. My day job has helped Palace Ladies. It allows me to see all the commercial opportunities in women’s football which weren’t there previously, such as getting people through the gates, fan engagement and sponsorship. Clubs now need a strategy when it comes to all that, and it’s becoming more important in the women’s game and we’re trying to tap into that. If I’m asked I’m happy to give advice, but I try to leave that in the office and just turn up and play!

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 newcastle united 0 Saturday 22nd September 2018

Despite dominating the majority of the game, Palace couldn’t find a way through Newcastle United’s defence as the teams played out at stalemate at Selhurst Park. There was an early scare when Ayoze Perez robbed possession off James Tomkins and burst goalwards but Wayne Hennessey comfortably saved, and after Jamaal Lascelles missed after meeting a corner, the Eagles caused panic of their own at a set-piece and Luka Milivojevic saw his free-kick evade everyone in a packed area but strike the post.

In the second half the hosts had plenty of opportunities, the best of which fell to Mamadou Sakho when Andros Townsend’s cross was flapped at and missed by Martin Dubravka, but somehow the Frenchman sent his close-range header wide with the goal gaping. In the dying moments James McArthur was a stud away from turning in Wilfried Zaha’s cross-shot but the Eagles’ luck deserted them as they failed to score at home for the third successive game for the first time in 12 months.

Late drama saw Palace fall to defeat at Bournemouth after a penalty award four minutes from time allowed Junior Stanislas to net the winner. The Cherries began sharply and after four minutes Adam Smith slid a low cross into the area for Callum Wilson to hold up, and the striker laid it off into the path of David Brooks to fire first-time into the top corner via the bar. Despite suffering that setback, Palace grew in confidence as the game progressed and were notably better after the restart, and on 55 minutes Wilfried Zaha

Two good saves by Wayne Hennessey denied Wilson and Dan Gosling late on which looked to secure Palace a point, however with time ticking away Mamadou Sakho and Jefferson Lerma tangled in the area at a free-kick and Mike Dean deemed Sakho to have elbowed the Cherries man, allowing Stanislas to snatch the win minutes after arriving onto the pitch as a substitute.
