Good afternoon and welcome back to Hayes Lane for today’s Championship game against Durham.
D
urham have had a fantastic start to this campaign having won 6 of their 7 games and currently sit top of the table on 18 points. Our last game against Durham at Bromley Football Club saw us narrowly lose 0-1 which was a very entertaining game and was probably our best performance last season. Durham are always a big strong physical side mixed with a little flare and can be very difficult defensively to break down. So today will be again, a very tough encounter, but one the squad will engage in and stick to our early principles of playing attacking football. I will say this season as a team we have started positively and are no way yet the finished article, but as the squad evolve we are getting more confident with the new style of play and the players are starting to produce some fantastic football. Last weekend was very disappointing against Watford, not in the way we played, but the way we conceded the two late goals
today will be again, a very tough encounter, but one the squad will engage in and stick to our early principles of playing attacking football where we totally dominated the play. Once again, our dominant play and chances created were not finished off and something as we must put right for us to climb the table. I’m not a deluded manager but I do believe that at present we are in a false position and the only part of our game that is missing, is finding the back of the net! As a team we get into great areas and positions on the pitch manager
to convert but as a unit we are not quite there and this part of the game is something the players have been working tirelessly on to put right on the training pitch, so when we do start converting these chances, I do believe we will start climbing the league table and our targets set will start to be achieved. Enjoy the game, Dean

O
ur start to the season has probably been the best I’ve had here at Crystal Palace. We’ve got a new formation, new coaches and have enjoyed a really positive start. Our new formation sees us play three at the back, with our wingbacks playing more like wingers. And our approach has changed, too: we’re trying to play small, quick passes to then break out and utilise the wingers’ pace to get the balls in and score. One of the main focuses is to keep the ball short, so instead of going long we can try to keep possession and play, trying to tear teams apart through our passing. It’s been a change and it’s been hard to get used to, but it’s clicking now. You can start to see the difference in the way we’re playing and the results we’re getting, which are both more positive than last season. Personally it’s more enjoyable; I can just sit back, do my defending and watch the magic happen in front of me. We can always gel a bit more but all the new players have fitted in well. It didn’t take long for everyone to get on with each other and we’ve all got the same goal: to get as many points as possible. As one of the longest serving players here now, I have more responsibility to help the others and make sure they know what the coaches expect from us. Individually, I still want to develop and to be one of the best players in the league. I want to keep the most
clean sheets, I want to help my team out. If everything continues to come together like it is now, we’ve definitely got the potential and the players for a top four finish. But there are areas we still need to work on, and one of those is defending set pieces. Our goalkeeper coach Harry Smart is the set piece master. He analyses the other team’s set plays, so we know where they run and prepare for it. At the end of last season we used
It’s been a change and it’s been hard to get used to, but it’s clicking now. You can start to see the difference in the way we’re playing and the results we’re getting, which are both more positive than last season zonal marking but it didn’t really worked for us, so this season we’ve changed that around and have a mixture of zonal and marking the player. The combination is working really well. Lee Hayes does our attacking dead balls and I’m one of the tallest in the team, so I want to impact the game at set pieces. He shows us how the defence sets up and where we can find gaps for scoring opportunities. You heard it here first: top four finish! lizzie waldie
