ROY HODGSON

Crystal Palace enjoyed a fantastic year in 2019, collecting 57 league points in total, and I could not be prouder of how the team performed over this challenging period of time. I am pleased to be leading the squad into a new year - indeed, a new decade - and I look forward to what lies ahead. But first we must begin our FA Cup campaign with this afternoon’s game against Derby. The FA Cup is a fine tournament with a rich history and it is one that the players and I take seriously. For a club of Crystal Palace’s size, competitions such as the FA Cup provide an excellent platform to succeed where success may be less easily attainable elsewhere. While securing our place in the league is - and always will be - our utmost priority, I relish the chance to provide the supporters with an exciting cup run and I

enjoy facing new opposition, who bring with them new challenges. Derby offer a good standard of opponent at Selhurst Park this afternoon and can even boast of owning an FA Cup trophy of their own. Without the need for my instruction, the players are all aware of the significance of the competition and the resolve they must show to thrive in it. That said, cup matches are unmissable opportunities to field those players who do not feature quite as regularly in the league due to the distinction and experience of Crystal Palace’s squad. We have a great deal of highly talented footballers at our disposal and it is only through others’ level of ability that not every player receives regular league minutes. Of course, discussing squad rotation brings me onto our recent injury crisis in which the

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

aforementioned squad members were called upon to play in a densely-packed run of games having perhaps not featured as frequently before. Every one of the team gives their all for every fixture and this was eminently clear as we lost a great number of players to injury in December. I am immensely proud of those who had to step-in and of those who played through various minor injuries to put the club before their own concerns. But I am proud of the squad as a whole and every player which forms it, and entering the new year sees us in a strong position with many positives to reflect upon and aim towards. I hope we can begin 2020 here at Selhurst Park with the first of many victories. Enjoy the game.

05

Welcome to the players and staff of Derby County and to every Crystal Palace fan here today for this FA Cup tie at Selhurst Park.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

A lot has happened since I last spoke to you before the West Ham game on Boxing Day. Jordan, man! I’ve got to start there. That was special. I was just watching this moment happen in front of me and I was going crazy inside as his run kept on going. And the finish. So calm. It was another vital goal from Jordan to give us three points in a game we fought hard to get back in. To then go to Southampton just two days after the 90 minutes against West Ham was mentally and physically tough. Our injuries this month have been crazy and it is strange that they have mainly affected the defence but this is what can happen in football sometimes. Southampton had defeated Chelsea 48 hours before and since our game have now taken three points against Tottenham Hotspur, therefore, we can be pleased with our point at their home. New Year’s Day was another trip away from Selhurst to Norwich

City. A game in which several of my teammates were taking part in despite having small injuries themselves. I think that shows how committed we are as a squad and how much playing for this club means to us. We had a lot of the possession against Norwich but I must say they had the better chances. With our injuries and having a squad with four Academy players on the bench - talented players but with little experience – to get a point was something to be proud of. Brandon’s impact in the final 10 minutes was excellent. He changed the game for us with the manager bringing off a defender in Martin to go for the equaliser. Brandon created the opportunity for Wilf to cross for Connor. I was pleased for Brandon – a proud moment for him – I was pleased for Wilf who had continued down the left-hand side despite his usual treatment and I was pleased for Connor to score a goal – that wait for

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

the VAR decision was a nervy time! Today’s game gives the players who have given so much since the Burnley game at the end of November to have a chance to rest and return to full fitness for Arsenal next week. Furthermore, it can allow players like Brandon and his Development teammates who have been on the bench recently the opportunity to experience a first-team game for Crystal Palace. No matter who is out there for the 90 minutes today I have no doubt that the work rate and passion will be there – it’s part of this club throughout all the teams. Derby County will of course come to Selhurst looking to knockout a Premier League team. A cup run for a side like Derby, who perhaps are not happy with their Championship position, can inspire a good run in the league so they will be up for the game. Get behind the boys and make some noise!

07

Happy New Year to our passionate fans back at Selhurst for the first time in 2020. We hope to make it a positive beginning for you and us on the pitch today.

STEVE PARISH

What a decade it has been. On 27th January 2010 travelling to Newcastle as a supporter, we heard that the club was bankrupt and had gone into administration for the second time. In the following six months the club narrowly avoided relegation to League One, had no stadium or training ground. 10 years on we are now the 20th equal (of 49) most successful Premier League team since it was formed in 1992, the club owns the stadium and first team training ground and we are building a brand new Academy. It’s been an incredible journey, a privilege for me and I would like to thank everyone who’s contributed along the way. I hadn’t even met Stephen Browett on that January day in 2010 and last week we celebrated his 60th birthday and reflected on the past decade, from my pitching the idea of saving the club and him saying ‘yes’ in 20 seconds to the present day. He said some very kind words at his party

and they are very much reciprocated. Stephen is one of the world’s good guys and it’s been wonderful having his friendship and unwavering support. Happy 60th mate, here’s to the next 10 years. A new year brings refreshed perspectives and optimism for us all, but I’d like to take a moment to also reflect upon a fantastic return in 2019. In the calendar year league table, we placed 7th over a 38-game period. It has been a period of stability with Roy and his coaching staff, and a very settled squad. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we can continue the good form into this new decade and secure a top-half finish this time around – which would be a fitting return. It’s been a pretty manic period over the last few weeks, with the added challenge of several injuries but the commitment from the staff and the squad has been there for all to see. I was so pleased for Connor following

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

his crucial goal at Norwich, and also for Brandon who made his first team bow having only just turned 18. I’m sure Roy will take the chance to hand opportunities today to several young players who have earned places on the bench in recent weeks. Being in and around the first team will have been a fantastic experience for Brandon, James, Sam, Tyrick and Nya as they continue their development – it is up to them to grasp it with both hands. We went on a fantastic FA Cup run last season only to lose agonisingly in the quarter-final, with a trip to Wembley within our grasp. We have unfinished business with this competition, and I know it’s still one held in high regard amongst you all. Today’s opponents have gone one better and won the competition before, and their fans are packing out the Arthur Wait stand, which makes for an exciting occasion for all involved. Up The Palace!

09

Happy New Year to everyone here at Selhurst Park for today’s FA Cup fixture. Welcome to the fans, players, staff and directors of Derby County, and greetings to each and every Palace supporter. If you’re joining us for the first time – it’s great to have you with us.

Speaking ahead of his two-year anniversary since joining Crystal Palace as the club’s goalkeeping coach, Dean Kiely reflects with Ben Mountain on a career in coaching, the attributes of management and the character of south London’s men between the sticks.

Take the time to watch and there’s something quite rhythmic about goalkeeper training: the steady thud of a kick and slap of a catch over and over again. It’s cyclical, repetitive and compelling. Dean Kiely, reminiscent of goalkeeping legend Lev Yashin in his all black kit, will stand in an otherwise empty area, half-volleying balls into the latex palms of his shot stopping trefoil. It happens time after time after time. Then the trampoline comes out. “We’re always out a little earlier,” Kiely explains. “We have a little game of head tennis, spikeball or handball and it’s competitive. There are winners and losers; people are annoyed when they lose, people are elated when they win. But the fact they come knocking on my door in the morning saying: ‘What time are we going out? Can we go out early?’ is probably a sign they enjoy that.” But at the elite level of football, enjoyment is secondary to fulfilment and Kiely ensures his ‘keepers’ careers are shaped in the best way possible under the former Republic of Ireland gloveman. Arriving for work at 8am, Kiely has three hours to prepare himself and his sessions before training begins at 11 or, for the ‘keepers, something closer to half past 10.

Kiely elaborates: “The main ingredient for me, my role and responsibilities is I provide the framework of training, the environment. It’s down to me to make it positive in that respect and then the three senior goalkeepers I have, it’s their responsibility to come and give their best and really commit to everything we’re doing. “There needs to be healthy competition. Whoever’s playing in the team needs to look in the rear-view mirror and see two other very competent goalies working extremely hard to try and get in the team. We’re all the same, we’re all working for the same club. I think it’s critical they work extremely hard but there’s a sort of healthy respect.” Speaking on his journey towards Southampton just one day before Vicente Guaita pulled off a string of saves that earned Crystal Palace a well-fought point from the Saints, Kiely talks with authority on the art of goalkeeping and how that transmits itself into training. He has every right to, too, having played 759 competitive games of football between the sticks, represented his country on multiple occasions and worked in coaching for almost 10 years. Today, as the Eagles host Derby County, it is exactly two years

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

since the club announced Kiely’s arrival, and now the 49-yearold reflects on his career after hanging up the gloves, explaining just how he made the switch from player to coach at West Bromwich Albion. “It was the best transition ever. The opportunity to become a player/coach probably came a year too early but it was an opportunity I thought I couldn’t really pass up. I did it, combined the coaching with being sat on the bench as the No.2 goalkeeper and looking after the senior goalkeepers. “I learnt lots because as a player you just put your blinkers on and take care of yourself and stay in the best shape you can be to play in the team but as a coach you have other goalkeepers under your duty of care and there are other factors which you’ve got to look out for. “I think I embraced the role in terms of: now, it’s not all about me and my career as an individual. It’s about looking at the goalkeeping department, heading up the goalkeeping department, shaping it. There was the odd time with injuries where I played and out of respect to the football club I made sure that I was training and being available to play.” One significant moment in Kiely’s early career as a coach came when the man who

13

05.01.2020

appointed him, Roberto Di Matteo, departed the Baggies to be replaced by Roy Hodgson. It was Kiely’s first managerial change as a member of staff. “Dan Ashworth was the Director of Football and he promoted a pyramid system which meant everybody that works at the football club was handpicked by West Brom to work in that sort of structure. Then when a manager left, the pyramid and main nucleus of the staff stayed intact and the new manager came in with one other - an assistant. Everybody else carried on and did their jobs. “That’s how Roy came in and thereafter that’s how managers came in and out. For me, it worked great. To have an opportunity to work with Roy Hodgson and have all his experience and learn off him and sort of see how it was done was great for me. I was at West Brom and worked under different managers but certainly Roy was top, top draw in terms of he was happy to help you develop as a coach and I learnt a lot. “It’s a process that doesn’t take long because the manager comes in and communicates very, very openly what he expects, what he demands from players, staff, all those sort of things. We then as staff work accordingly and work extremely hard to try and produce that.”

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

Continually looking to shape and develop his coaching further, Kiely discusses cherry-picking the best attributes of a manager’s style. With Hodgson, who hauled West Brom to their highest league finish in 30 years and then higher still the next season, Kiely had plenty to take on board. He explains: “The biggest thing is as a football manager he wants to be out on the grass and he wants to be coaching the football team. Every session. There’s never a throwaway session where you’re just passing the time; there’s always a theme, there’s always work to be done in terms of getting the team ready for games. It’s always relevant and it’s always realistic. “I’m quite straightforward. I want to get it done, I want to work extremely hard and for my work to contribute in some way, shape or form to the football club doing well. So when your manager comes in and says: ‘Right, I want to work on A, B and C regarding Saturday’s game,’ or all those sort of bits are, for me, really eye-catching.” For many players today, staying in football after retirement is an attractive career move, but it doesn’t suit them all. At Palace, Kiely reveals, two of the team’s three shot stoppers have one eye on making the switch a few years down the line.

15

05.01.2020

“What’s interesting is Wayne Hennessey is currently in and around with the Welsh FA in terms of doing his coaching badge,” Kiely says. “It’s something he speaks enthusiastically about. He’s obviously got that in the long-term future; that’s something he will do. “And Stephen Henderson similarly, he’s taking his badges with the FAI in Ireland. Again, we’ve had conversations, he’s always asking questions: ‘Why this session? Does this work? Does that work?’ Again, that’s healthy and positive. I think those two have asked the questions and enrolled on the courses and I see them as professional coaches, definitely. They certainly have the right traits and temperaments.” But one name hasn’t yet come up in a lengthy conversation with Crystal Palace’s goalkeeping coach and it’s time for that to change. Recently, Vicente Guaita was named the club’s Player of the Month for December after receiving three Man of the Match awards from six appearances. Now, the sprightly Spaniard is fast becoming a fan favourite, with many referring to the No.31 as south London’s finest shot stopper since Nigel Martyn. Turning his attention to last summer’s astute signing, Kiely praises an individual dedicated both on and off the pitch.

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

He says: “With the language initially for Vicente that was a challenge but he’s embraced it and he’s been really good. Julian [Speroni] helped. He was that foil between. For me, the credit for overcoming it [the language barrier] goes to Vicente because he’s taken his English lessons, learnt the language, thrown himself in and done it well. “Then also playing in La Liga and the Premier League, they’re both top, top leagues. There will be slight differences that you have to adapt to and I have to say Vicente’s adapted well to it and quickly. “Initially when a foreign goalkeeper comes in there are a few more factors: the language, settling his family in. That’s not down to me. Someone like [Player Liaison Officer] Danny Young does all the logistics in that respect. Any goalkeeper will play their best football when they’re comfortable and what I mean by that is that everything else is taken care of. All they have to do is turn up, put some kit on, put some boots and gloves on and let’s crack on.” Palace’s ‘keepers are thoroughly well-equipped in this sense and, with the help of an expert coach, sessions prepared for hours and, in no small part, Kiely’s trampoline, Crystal Palace have become one of the most defensively steadfast clubs in the country. Long may it continue

MATCH PREVIEW With thanks to Derby County fan group Stair35 for providing the below review of what Palace can expect against the Rams today. Find them on Twitter: @Stair35DCFC. Under new management for the fifth season on the bounce, 2019/20 at Derby could be the long awaited ‘transition season’ that has been delayed by a few years due to our ultimately unsuccessful play-off runs. Phillip Cocu has not enjoyed the easiest of starts to life at Pride Park, which includes the sacking of our club captain after that now infamous team night out at the pub. Our best performances - there haven’t been many - have come when we have moved the ball quickly and with a directness to our play. Injuries - which have contributed to not being able to name a settled 11 - make it

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

difficult to judge our style of play as it stands. Cocu seems to still be finding his feet in the Championship, and having lost our three on-loan - and arguably best - players from last season (Harry Wilson, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori) the squad has been nowhere near the same levels. A lack of creativity in attack is a major concern. Goals have been at a premium, particularly on our travels. At the other end, crosses, set pieces or any sort of ball into the box seems to cause us a problem defensively. Hopefully January brings with it the chance for Cocu to use the transfer window to bring in players that compliment his preferred style of play, and we are looking forward to seeing if Wayne Rooney will be able to provide a much needed spark.

The number of goals scored over two legs in Derby’s last European Cup tie back in 1975. In the second round they drew the great Real Madrid but convincingly beat them 4-1 at home in the first leg. However, the away game at the Bernabau ended in a 5-1 defeat, resulting in a cruel 6-5 exit on aggregate.

Infamously, the Rams registered the most defeats in a Premier League season, when they racked up just one home win, no away wins and 11 points in a disastrous 2007/08 campaign.

The number of years it allegedly took the club to break a gypsy curse. When the Rams moved into the Baseball Ground in 1895 they had to evict some gypsies. It is said that one of them placed a curse on the club, specifically on the FA Cup, and the team subsequently lost three FA Cup finals in the next eight years. They finally won it in 1946.

35

County hold the unique record of having hosted England internationals at three of their grounds. They hosted England’s 9-0 drubbing of Ireland in 1895 at the Racecourse Ground, then a 2-1 win over the same team in 1911 at the Baseball Ground, and finally a 4-0 victory over Mexico at Pride Park in 2001.

SOMEONE THEY’D LIKE TO FORGET: No wonder the Rams eventually signed David Nugent, with the striker notching nine goals and four assists against them in 18 games.

WATCH PALACE U18S’ FA YOUTH CUP CLASH v WOLVES U18S FOR FREE Just before Christmas, Crystal Palace Under-18s won their First Round tie of the FA Youth Cup by dispatching of Reading Under-18s 4-2. Two fine goals from Rob Street after Brandon Aveiro and Malachi Boateng had given the Eagles a 2-0 lead at Madejski Stadium saw Paddy McCarthy’s side progress to the next round of the competition. The Eagles will now face Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-18s

on Wednesday 15th January, 7pm K.O. with it yet to be confirmed whether the game will take place at the home ground of AFC Telford or at Wolves’ stadium Molineux. It promises to be an exciting game with Palace’s ranks able to include Brandon Pierrick, the Academy youngster who made an excellent impact against Norwich City earlier in the week. The forward is now the Eagles’ second youngest ever Premier League debutant – and played the key pass to Wilfried Zaha for him to set-up Connor Wickham for Palace’s VAR-assisted equaliser.

As the club did with the Reading clash, the game will be broadcast live for free on eagles.cpfc.co.uk – stay tuned to cpfc.co.uk and our social media channels for full information.

PALACE FOR LIFE

When Ryan first joined Premier League Kicks sessions with Palace for Life, he was 13-years-old and struggling with his behaviour and a lack of confidence. A pupil at Beckmead School in Croydon, Ryan started playing football as a way to channel his emotions and quickly found a supportive community growing around him. Five years on, now 18 Ryan is volunteering at sessions to help younger boys build their confidence and was recently honoured with a Jack Petchey Achievement Award in recognition of the outstanding role model he has become. He was also selected as a Nike Changemaker for his work in the community. Ryan explained: “I wanted to give back and last year I wasn’t doing very much so thought why not help out? I started to realise that I was outgrowing the sessions so it made sense to help the younger boys.” Alongside PL Kicks, Ryan

has received mentoring support through Palace for Life’s Breaking the Cycle programme, which helps young people at risk of anti-social or criminal behaviour and helps them to find more positive pathways. Ryan’s confidence has grown to such an extent that he has also started pursuing his dream to get into football coaching and has recently completed his FA Level 1 qualification. In addition, he is working at Selhurst Park on matchdays as part of the stewarding team. “When I first started at Kicks I was a bit anxious about coming because of all the bad things happening in the area. I have become more social because of Kicks and I am able to go around the area more freely as I know most of the boys from the programme. “I have to thank Q (Palace for Life coach, Qudus Popoola) for all the support. Having a chance to

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

meet up and talk to someone about my struggles has really helped me and I thank Palace for that. “If it wasn’t for the support, all my accomplishments would have never happened. I’m truly grateful and honoured to be a part of Palace for Life.” With his newfound confidence and coaching qualification, Ryan is now looking forward to his future with optimism and excitement: “I’m not sure what I’d like to do yet, but I would definitely like to do something within the football industry. Hopefully I’ll manage Crystal Palace one day - I’m allowed to dream big!” Find out more about Premier League Kicks at www.palaceforlife.org To find out more about Palace for Life Foundation find us on social media: @palaceforlife

AMBER STOBBS

I suppose, when I think about it, all signs were always leading to me returning ‘home’. I’m a local girl from Croydon, and my friend, Andria Georgiou - who I used to play with at West Ham - plays for Palace. In fact, my last football game back in May was against Palace, at Selhurst Park, before I took a break from football and left Charlton. After the game, Andria passed on my number to Dean Davenport and he text me basically saying: ‘I hear you’re taking a break from the game. If you ever want to just train or get back involved, let me know.’ That itch to start playing again returned. Therefore, when I moved back to Croydon I dropped Dean a message and came along for a couple of training sessions. After that first training session I knew this was just right; I came away extremely excited. My mum used to work at Selhurst Park as she did finances for the club – her office used to be

the new Palace for Life Foundation offices. We actually had a young Palace player, Stephen Evans - who played for Wales Under-21s - as a lodger. I have these memories of going to my mum’s work during the school summer holidays and hiding under the desk when Simon Jordan would come in - I was worried I wasn’t supposed to be there! The office knew I loved football and someone suggested joining in the Soccer School which were held in what’s now called the Fanzone. I joined the Soccer School the next day and from there my passion for football was ignited. I was invited down to the Palace girls’ football session and ended up joining their team. The picture on the page opposite is actually one of me aged seven on a matchday! I have great memories of going to Selhurst Park for games, being a mascot and playing on the pitch at half-time. It’s great to be back here playing

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

as a senior pro. I got some minutes under my belt in the recent Conti Cup clash against my former club, West Ham – it’s always a great feeling to play your old team. And then I started against Durham in our final league game of 2019, which was really surprising as I’d just joined. I’d been feeling sharp in training but I was only anticipating getting just a few minutes in the second-half! When I heard my name in the starting lineup I must admit the nerves hit me. It was amazing to get my first start. Despite the defeat, to score on my first start capped off what has been a great first few weeks at Palace. It’s clear that everyone is a team player, everyone is willing to do what is required to help the team and I’ve never felt so welcomed, so quickly, into a squad. I feel extremely lucky to be able to say that and I’m excited to see what we can achieve in the second half of the season.

41

I’ve played against Palace for the last two seasons, both times with different clubs – West Ham and Charlton Athletic – and I always got a good feeling from the squad. I am delighted to have now re-signed for my local club after representing them as a youngster.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King

VIRUS SWEEPS SELHURST PARK In the days leading up to the game the squad was hit with an illness which gave Freedman a team selection headache, as 72 hours after this encounter was the firstleg of the Carling Cup semi-final

against Cardiff City. With that in mind he gave debuts to two of the loan players in Dumbuya and Egan while handing former junior Kyle de Silva his first appearance. Parsons and Pedroza were given their first starts with the likes of Julian Speroni, Glenn Murray, Wilfried Zaha, Mile Jedinak and Darren Ambrose not featuring. After the game Freedman revealed: “Hand on heart I was forced into making that many changes. I have a horrid virus sweeping through the club and I had to think of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night. I was forced to make maybe three or four more changes than I would like.” PALACE OUSTED BY THE RAMS Any hopes the Eagles had of progressing in the FA Cup were snuffed out by an early goal from County’s Theo Robinson who stabbed the ball home at the third attempt after just nine minutes. The players brought in by Freedman soon began to settle down with Antonio Pedroza catching the eye with a display of

CRYSTAL PALACE v DERBY COUNTY

close control and nearly netting an equaliser following a sharp turn and shot that was narrowly wide. PREVIOUS CUP CLASH Prior to this game in 2012 the clubs had been drawn together once before in a cup competition and this was the Fourth Round of the League Cup back in October 1969 following both clubs’ promotion to Division One. A 1-1 draw was played out at Selhurst Park on Wednesday October 15th when a first-half goal from Cliff Jackson was cancelled out by Willie Carlin after the break. Five days later at the Baseball Ground the scoreline was the same - goals from Bobby Woodruff for Palace and Roy McFarland for the Rams - when thick fog rolled in over the stands during the second-half and, following a brief halt, the referee abandoned the game with just five minutes left. The second-leg was replayed on Wednesday 29th October and this time the Rams, with two goals from Alan Hinton and another from Kevin Hector, went through to meet Manchester United.

47

PLAYERS MERRY-GO-ROUND With the transfer window opening a few days before our cup clash against the Rams, then-manager Dougie Freedman moved quickly to make several additions. First was the extension of forward Chris Martin’s loan from Norwich City until the end of the February - Martin may well feature in Derby County’s squad today. Next was defender John Egan, who joined on a month’s loan from Sunderland and finally right-back Mustapha Dumbuya was acquired from Doncaster Rovers. Michael Chambers then joined permanently from Dulwich Hamlet before Paul McShane completed the transfer business, joining for a one-month loan deal from Hull City after the eventual cup defeat at the hands of Derby.
