CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

16.07.2020

ROY HODGSON Welcome to Ole Gunnar SolskjÌr, his staff and players and the accompanying directors who have travelled to Selhurst Park for this evening’s game.

06

As always when writing these notes I am particularly conscious of all those who would have loved to be here tonight but whom now have to resort to the next best alternative which is following the action on television. We miss our fans and the support and excitement they generate and we cannot wait for the day when the turnstiles open again and we play our football in front of a live audience. In direct contrast to ourselves, Manchester United are enjoying a rich vein of form which at the time of writing has seen them unbeaten for 16 games - an extremely long and successful run. By the same token the enforced break, due to the coronavirus epidemic, has enabled several of their key players to return from injury, leaving Ole with a strong squad to choose from and the ability to rotate, if necessary, during a period where the games that need to be played leave little room for rest and recovery.

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

I have been surprised at how my squad of players has been able to cope with the extra demands the fixture list has placed on us, especially given the fact that we have had three or four regular firstteam players unavailable since the league resumed. The loss of Gary Cahill, who now joins James Tomkins on the injury list, will add to the burden of our current central defenders, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho, who fortunately both played exceptionally well in our last game here against Chelsea. The team’s performance that day, after going a goal behind early in the game, when Gary Cahill tore his hamstring and Willian was thus allowed to run unimpeded towards goal, gave me immense satisfaction and pride. The effort and determination to stay in the game and most of all the quality of our play in this match sums up in many ways what this team and football club are all about. Going into this ninegame finale, played in such a compromised format, we always knew that the difficulty of the programme with only two games to be played against teams outside of the top six and with the squad reduced by injury was going to place extreme demands on the players and in particular the

medical and sports science staff. To produce the level of performance that we did against the third best team in the country, last Tuesday, was remarkable and certainly proved a reminder of what we are capable of and why we consider this season as a good one.

“THE EFFORT AND DETERMINATION TO STAY IN THE GAME AND MOST OF ALL THE QUALITY OF OUR PLAY IN THIS MATCH SUMS UP IN MANY WAYS WHAT THIS TEAM AND FOOTBALL CLUB ARE ALL ABOUT”

A new season is soon to be upon us, hopefully with fans back in their rightful place and brimming with enthusiasm to support their teams to go on to even better things than the season before. I am hoping that we will have a profitable transfer window which will allow us to strengthen

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

the current squad, whom have performed so admirably these past three seasons, and to introduce some new faces and some new heroes for you to follow. Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman are working very hard behind the scenes to bring this about as the tried and trusted group that have got us through these past three seasons will appreciate some help and welcome any competition for places. Finally, it was very rewarding to learn last week that our Academy has been granted Category 1 status. A lot of work has gone into improving facilities at the Copers Cope Road venue and we shall now have the training facilities needed to bring on the young talent which abounds in our area and to entice players to follow in the footsteps of Wilf Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to become local favourites. Congratulations to all who have put their heart and soul into this project, one that has been close to our Chairman’s heart ever since I arrived here three years ago. We know you are with us again tonight in spirit and we will do our best to provide you with some good football and entertainment. Enjoy the game.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

Returning to our match against Burnley that seems so long ago, I can only say it was not the best night for us. The first-half they surprised us, as we had expected them to play more direct football. We spoke at half-time and changed our approach and the second-half was much better from us: we moved the ball quicker, we pushed higher up the pitch and we created some chances. In the end I don’t think we deserved to lose but what can you do; that is football. At Leicester, a team we have performed well against in my seasons here so far, it was a slow start to the second-half and an unfortunate slip from Mama that took the game from us. But there are times when you cannot always focus on the negatives and the mistakes. As captain, I must look at the positives. Of course, we discuss the mistakes and defeats but we have to

look forward, too. Jaïro played well in the midfield with myself and Macca and we were all so happy for Tyrick to earn a Premier League debut. I spoke to him throughout his time on the pitch, when out of possession, to help him find the tempo of the game. But when he was on the ball, the team trusted him to do what was right, and he did. I enjoy seeing Tyrick, Sam, Nik and Brandon on our bench, it shows the future of our club. Liverpool, Leicester City, Chelsea and Manchester United, playing four of the potential Champions League qualifiers for next season in our first seven games after the restart was always going to be a tough period. But against Chelsea I felt we showed what this squad is all about. To not avoid defeat against them was unfair; we deserved something from this game. I was

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

ready to celebrate from the bench when Scott’s header went past their ‘keeper but I still cannot believe it hit the post and didn’t go in. To reply the way Wilf did – one of the best goals I have ever been on the pitch to see – and then to immediately score through Christian after their third highlighted the skill and strong mentality of this squad. I hope we continue that performance in tonight’s game against Manchester United – another team who are in good form after the league’s return. They have many attacking players but we have demonstrated our defensive qualities on a lot of occasions. We still have lots to play for in our final three games, as we look to achieve the club’s highest Premier League points total. To do this we need you to… Make some noise!

09

We have played another four games since the last time I was able to speak to you – but I am commenting now without knowing what happened in our match against Aston Villa.

STEVE PARISH Thank you for buying the programme for our match against Manchester United, and I hope you enjoy the game from wherever you are in the world. Welcome to United’s directors, players and staff to Selhurst Park tonight.

I am penning these notes the morning after a fantastic performance by Roy’s team that somehow ended in defeat against Chelsea. We don’t seem to have much good fortune at times and Gary Cahill’s injury, along with the post, denied us at least a point. But there are so many positives from the game, including Wilf’s performance and a wonder strike to match, and Christian getting a well-deserved goal after an equally excellent display. We are all wishing Gary the speediest of recoveries; he has been a magnificent addition to the club since he joined us last year. You will have seen the news that our Academy has been awarded Category 1 status by the Premier League, the highest tier available to clubs. This development with the new staffing levels, increased sports science, medical and education provisions will enable us to not only create great players but also improve the lives of so many youngsters in south London.

The facility will be utilised day and night across the community for clubs and schools, benefitting people from all backgrounds. School holiday programmes, disability teams and community engagement initiatives will provide development opportunities for thousands of young south Londoners. We also intend to continue our Divert programme to find pathways for young people away from crime with skills training and mentoring from our staff and players.

“MY UPMOST THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO THE THOUSANDS OF SUPPORTERS WHO WAIVED THEIR RIGHT TO A REFUND AND TRANSFERRED THE MONEY TOWARDS THE ACADEMY”

I cannot overstate just how incredible this opportunity is for our young footballers. The games programme will significantly enhance their development, as they will play the best in their age bracket every week, and the facilities we are building will provide them with every opportunity to succeed. With the significant investment we have made, the diverse and vast pool of talent in

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

our catchment area, I believe this will be a huge lasting benefit to the club and the wider community. We also confirmed several contract extensions and scholarships for young players – including 15 young men who were instrumental in becoming national champions at Under-15s level. It was fitting that this announcement was made just a few days after Tyrick made his debut at Leicester City, providing yet another example that there is a pathway from our Academy to the first-team. Congratulations to Tyrick on his landmark moment, and also to his family and the club’s coaches who have helped him reach this point. We all have high hopes for Tyrick, and now he must continue to work hard for another chance to impress when the time comes. Finally, I would like to pass on my upmost thanks and appreciation to the thousands of supporters who waived their right to a refund and transferred the money towards the Academy. Your generosity is enabling us to further enhance this brilliant project and we will be eternally grateful to all Academy Founder Members. I look forward to getting the opportunity to thank each and every one of you in person at some point. Enjoy the game tonight, and stay safe. Up the Palace.

The No.3 of Patrick van Aanholt is raised, and alongside it is No.39: Tyrick Mitchell. Here, the proud Academy graduate talks with Dan Blazer about what that eight minutes plus stoppage time against Leicester City was like.

Despite blind optimism and belief from those closest to him, did Mitchell always feel he’d make that step onto a top flight pitch as part of Roy Hodgson’s squad? “I always believed in myself,” the 20-year-old proudly says. “But it was the injuries, that was the only thing that I considered might have stopped me this season.” In fact, after an impressive showing against F.C. Luzern in pre-

“That’s what makes coming on against Leicester even more special, how the season was going after my injury in pre-season to how it is going now.” Performing well in a preseason and regularly training and travelling with the first-team is one thing. But what is the actual moment like, the moment where you can now claim to be a Premier League footballer?

“ A DREAM COME TRUE; A PROUD MOMENT FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. IT’S A REWARD FOR THE ALL THE HARD WORK I’VE PUT IN TO GET THERE ”

season – in particular, a composed and well-timed last-ditch tackle that went viral from the club’s official Twitter account – many tipped the Under-23s player to follow a similar trajectory during the 2019/20 season to that of Aaron Wan-Bissaka just two campaigns before. An injury during the match on tour in Switzerland curtailed any chance of that but the coronavirus-enforced pause on the current campaign offered Mitchell the chance to still make his mark in a pivotal season.

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

Thankfully for Mitchell, Hodgson and his coaching staff didn’t offer him advanced warning that his number was about to shown on the fourth official’s board. “Literally seconds before,” the left-back reveals how long he had to prepare for his Premier League bow against Champions Leaguechasing Leicester City. “When I used to think about that moment happening, I always thought that my nerves would be doing this and that. However, going into it, I didn’t

15

When Tyrick Mitchell was subbed on by Roy Hodgson for his Premier League debut v Leicester City on Saturday 4th July, 2020, the left-back became the 36th Academy graduate to feature in a senior league game for Palace since 2004. A remarkable achievement for Mitchell, personally, but also Crystal Palace as a collective – 36 is a number that will only continue to grow with the game-changing news regarding the club earning approval to be granted Category 1 Academy status. For Mitchell, and every other player who has taken the welltrodden path from Academy to the Eagles’ first-team, his debut was “a dream come true; a proud moment for me and my family. “It’s a reward for the all the hard work I’ve put in to get there,” he added. Those who have seen that work first-hand are Mitchell’s supportive family, who couldn’t wait for their Premier League debutant to return home from the King Power Stadium. “My family are always going to support me and when I got home they were saying that: ‘they knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later because of the hard work they could see I was putting in,’” Mitchell laughs in a knowing way that all footballers’ families, no matter what age, always believe they’ve got the world’s best.

have any time to have any of those feelings – it just all became real.” A baptism of fire it might not have been, but entering the unique environment of a behind closed doors game, against several Premier League title winners and with Palace 2-0 down at the time can’t have been easy. “I was telling myself to look confident on the ball, keep the ball and show what you’re capable of but without doing something too out of the ordinary – I just didn’t want to make any mistakes,” he explains. And he didn’t. A combination of Mitchell’s talent and maturity plus some wise words from club captain Luka Milivojevic ensured this. “Luka was directing me: come in, go here or go there,” Mitchell reveals. “But on the ball, the players let me have freedom to express myself, to do what I felt was right. Off the ball was when they were helping me with my positioning and to understand the tempo of the game.” Unfortunately for Mitchell and his teammates, as the Eagles pushed for that deficit-halving goal to set-up a frantic finale, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy scored a late third – his 101st in the Premier League. Hodgson and Christian Benteke praised the Foxes’ frontman post-match – his goal haul being an achievement hard not to respect – and for Mitchell, Vardy’s performance is one that has taught him plenty.

“The intensity with which Vardy presses with is crazy. The speed he picks up is something that you don’t see many people able to do – he is one of a few who can do that in the Premier League.” The composed and seamless manner in which Palace’s Academy product came into the game v Brendan Rodgers’ side, in difficult circumstances, showcased the squad’s harmony.

“ ON THE BALL, THE PLAYERS LET ME HAVE FREEDOM TO EXPRESS MYSELF, TO DO WHAT I FELT WAS RIGHT. OFF THE BALL WAS WHEN THEY WERE HELPING ME WITH MY POSITIONING AND TO UNDERSTAND THE TEMPO OF THE GAME. ” “All of the lads are easy-going,” Mitchell explains, “and are happy to help you because they appreciate that I am young. “I’m close with Jaïro Riedewald. He is probably the one who has helped me the most from when I first started coming up and training with the first-team. He’s young himself, so he understands and relates it back to when he was with Ajax and breaking through.

ideal situation it would be to come on the Selhurst Park pitch, with all the fans there because I know Palace supporters are so supportive of young players – that would’ve given even more incentive to push even harder.” If the rise from youth teams to first-team is a long, dedicated path then the change from anonymity to fame is rapid. “After the match, there was loads of love,” Mitchell says with

“Act like a robot,” Mitchell interjects, pre-empting the route of our question. “At the end of the day, most of these people don’t actually know you and the type of person that you are - sometimes people don’t class footballers as humans. “People make mistakes; no one wants to make them but it happens in life. The same way in which someone will go to work and forget something. And we go on the pitch

an almost audible smile. “When I put a post on Instagram, I got more likes than I usually get and I keep getting more followers – it is a nice feeling; a sense of achievement that other people are seeing my hard work pay-off.” Unfortunately, with added fame and followers, Mitchell, if he hasn’t already, will have to deal with the ignorant and attentionseeking individuals that social media is rotten to its core with.

and we misplace passes, we score own goals and we get red cards.” Even Victor Moses, Sean Scannell, Nathaniel Clyne, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha made the mistakes that the Palace left-back is pre-emptively referencing that will no doubt occur in his career. But having now seen what it is like to be a Crystal Palace and Premier League footballer, from social media to in-game minutes, Tyrick Mitchell knows one thing: “I now want more of it.”

19

“He is always giving me little pointers, even things such as ‘smile more’ to tactical advice to give myself the best chance.” It is often said that football is a funny old game. And when you hear that our promising left-back was more nervous about starting in a friendly game than his Premier League debut, it is hard to disagree. “It was the friendly we had against West Ham United,” Mitchell reveals his biggest fear since becoming a first-teamer. “I knew there was no pressure on that match and it was just to get the team on the ball again and to experience what it was going to be like in a behind closed doors stadium. “Because the coaches told me I was going to start that game, against physically bigger players like Michail Antonio and Felipe Anderson – I had seen Anderson tearing it up when he first came to the Premier League, and now I’m seeing him on my side; it was a good nerve-wracking moment. “But as soon as the game starts, it all becomes natural and you don’t get fazed – you don’t have time to look at them like: ‘Oh, this is Antonio’. You instead view the situation as: this is the winger I’m trying to take the ball off.” Mitchell’s debut against Leicester City was perfect just for the very fact it happened. However, if Mitchell was allowed to construct his dream first-team bow, it would be as follows: “If I was to create my

Not long left now of this ‘restart’ and with so many games in a short space of time it has felt like being on a runaway train at times. I honestly don’t know how media teams at Championship clubs stay sane! I also don’t know how they stay slim. If I’m not shoving a service station (plant-based) pastry down my throat I’m probably inhaling a Selhurst Park Sainsbury’s (plant-based) samosa. Matchdays go a lot quicker, too, mainly because we’re so much busier due to the Virtual Matchday experience we have created for fans. If you’re not aware, for the rest of the season we’re providing a free service where fans can have video calls with their mates before, during and after games. It’s a great opportunity

to catch-up with people you’d usually watch matches with. Before the game we have a matchday ‘show’ that you can watch whilst chatting. It’s a mixture of me showing you bits around the stadium, team lineup announcements, a live

post-match interviews come in as soon as they happen. It has been really enjoyable for me because I’ve had to learn a new skill: waffling away to camera on my own. I’ve never really had to do ‘reporting’ in this job as I’ve mainly been talking to a live crowd or interviewing somebody. To be honest, I’ve always thought I wouldn’t be capable of talking that much but it’s surprising how much comes out of your mouth when it has to there’s a gag in there somewhere but probably too disgusting for a programme column. Thankfully I now have Darren Ambrose with me for the remaining home games, so I can let him provide plenty of waffle, too. Darren is a great talker and really interested in getting involved in the media now

he has finished playing. What I love about football is that you get players who never had an affiliation with the club before joining ending up referring to the club as ‘us’ and ‘we’ even after they have left and finished playing; he’s a proper fan! Keep an eye out for the Utilita Half-Time Challenge. As much as I miss making subtle digs at the away team and the Twitter notifications that follow, I’ve enjoyed watching all the Goal Generator videos that have been sent in for the two previous home games. For the Burnley game we got kids to recreate Andros Townsend’s screamer and for the visit of Chelsea we had some inventive recreations of Christian Benteke’s dink at Stamford Bridge a few years

back. The players watch all the entries themselves and choose a winner of a signed shirt. Do get involved for the final game of the season. However, you will need TikTok so be prepared to find yourself spending 12 hours watching parents embarrass themselves with awkwardlooking dance routines.

Nemanja Matic has played against Palace nine times – the joint-sixth highest of his career.

FROM THE DUGOUT

“WE’RE GETTING FITTER AND FITTER THE MORE GAMES WE HAVE NOW. I’VE JUST BEEN IMPRESSED BY THE ATTITUDE AND THE MENTALITY OF EVERYONE.”

MATCH PREVIEW Crystal Palace’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford in August ended a run of 22 top-flight games without a win against Manchester United – in fact, the Eagles are looking to complete their first ever league double over the Red Devils. However, the history books are against Roy Hodgson’s side with Manchester United unbeaten in their last 11 away league games against Palace (W8 D3), since a 0-3 loss in May, 1991, courtesy of goals from Ian Wright and a brace from John Salako. Depending on how much merit you put in the aforementioned history book, Crystal Palace have faced the Red Devils more times at home in the Premier League without ever

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

winning (10) than any other side has done against another in the competition’s history. Historically, United’s game plan works well in keeping Palace at bay, with the Red Devils having kept a clean sheet in 67% of their Premier League games against Crystal Palace (14 shutouts in 21 meetings), their highest ratio against an opponent in the Premier League that they have faced a minimum of 17 times. Manchester United have scored exactly three goals in each of their last two visits to Selhurst Park, last scoring 3+ goals in three consecutive away Premier League matches against a single opponent between May ‘05-August ‘06 against Charlton Athletic.

ORCHESTRATOR: BRUNO FERNANDES 42

It is hard to remember a player joining one of the Premier League’s high-flyers and having such a quantifiable and immediate impact than Bruno Fernandes’ at Manchester United. In his opening nine Premier League games for the Red Devils, the attacking-midfielder has registered six goals and five assists – the latter stat putting him second in United’s ranks, one behind Marcus Rashford and Daniel James’ six assists each. Furthermore, it is the impact he is having across multiple attacking facets of the game – two goals from free-kicks, one from the penalty spot and despite only

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

playing in nine of the United’s 33 Premier League games, Fernandes has registered 15% of the club’s 487 shots – 13% of United’s shots on target, too. A link between the defensive shield of Nemanja Matic and the fluid frontline of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial, Fernandes is the one to stop tonight if Palace are to record another famous Selhurst Park victory. 16.07.2020

As this season has progressed, Ole Gunnar Solskjær has settled on Anthony Martial as his No.9, with Marcus Rashford playing on the wing. With the creativity and pace that the likes of Daniel James, Mason Greenwood and Rashford offer, there has been little requirement for Martial to be anything other than a focal point. This is highlighted in the fact that 14 of Martial’s 15 league goals have come from inside the box, the striker has made 106 less passes than Paul Pogba ATTACKING WAN-BISSAKA Palace’s famed Academy production line saw Aaron Wan-Bissaka join Manchester United in a club-record deal in the summer. Since leaving the Eagles, Wan-Bissaka’s style of play has altered with a greater impetus in

despite 16 more appearances and has been dispossessed more than any other Red Devil – a common occurrence for strikers who keep themselves in the penalty area as much as possible (seven of the 20 most dispossessed players in the Premier League this season are out-and-out strikers). Credit to Martial, though, with the striker’s 15 goals coming from 69 shots – 35 of which are on target – which puts him 18th in the list for ‘most shots taken’ behind several players who have less strikes than him this season: Dominic CalvertLewin, Kevin De Bruyne and Tammy Abraham to name just three.

Jordan Ayew

the final third – something that could perhaps be put down to the fact that wing-play, with the likes Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha, a much bigger weapon in Roy Hodgson’s Palace than Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s United’s style of play. Despite at the time of writing having played five games less than his final season in south London,

the full-back averages 44 passes a game compared to 33 in the 2018/19 season. Furthermore, the 92 crosses Wan-Bissaka has sent in is 36 more than his total last season – however, a cross accuracy success rate of 14% for United, compared to 21% suggests that less really is more.

Club chaplain, Chris Roe CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

16.07.2020

50

“The Saturday previously I was in the stands with my Season Ticket and the next Friday was a home game against Sunderland – which we won 1-0 – and I’m in the dressing room!” Crystal Palace’s club chaplain, Chris Roe, details his change in role from passionate fan on the Selhurst Park terraces to finding himself inside the inner sanctum of the Eagles’ dressing room. Chris’ role as chaplain is now in its 15th year, but the love affair with the famous red and blue pre-dates that. “I first came to Selhurst Park in 1968 for a 3-3 draw against Charlton,” he explains. “I was hooked after that. Furthermore, my youngest daughter Holly was playing for Palace’s girl’s team at the time I got approached about taking over from Nigel Sands.” If it’s too much to hint at divine intervention about how Chris ended up as a friendly face to the players he’d been encouraging from the stands just a few days before, we can at least stretch to ‘it was meant to be’:

“I got a phone call completely out of the blue asking whether I’d be interested in replacing the departing current club chaplain at Crystal Palace,” Chris says. “It transpired that somebody in our previous church was a journalist and she was interviewing John Boyers, who was the club chaplain at Manchester United, and he mentioned to her that Nigel Sands was thinking about retiring and that’s how my name came up.” We hint at a potential scepticism from players, managers and staff, but Roe politely knocks us back. He explains that people just have different levels of openness to the concept of a club chaplain. “But then I get to explain myself to them,” he proudly proclaims. “I explain why I’m there, which is basically to offer pastoral support of a nonfootballing nature. I’m not working on behalf of the club, I’m not exclusively religious and I just make it known I am available to any employees around the club for anything they’d like to discuss.”

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

“I’m just letting them know they are never alone,” he surmises. From a club chaplain’s point of view, it sounds like you couldn’t ask for a better manager than being greeted by Peter Taylor. Roe explains his first interaction with the then-Palace manager: “I spoke to Peter about coming to introduce myself to him but when I turned up he had assembled the whole firstteam squad and said: ‘Right, Chris, if you’d like to say a few words.’” As first days in a new role go, Chris’ is up there: “Julián Speroni was then designated to show me around and we had lunch,” he fondly remembers, “and from then on we’ve been friends.” Not every day sees you make friends with one of Palace’s greatest ever players, though. “We had a player who was signed from Southampton,” Chris nervously laughs as he already knows the punchline to the story that now sees Neil Warnock in charge of the Eagles, “and he asked me if there was a pre-match prayer meeting. There wasn’t

but I said to him that if Neil was okay with it I can set one up. “So we did this pre-match prayer meeting with a few players ahead of a home match against Scunthorpe United in the Championship - the players were back in the dressing room before 1:30, as requested.” The amusing nervous chuckles return, almost as if Warnock has walked back through the Training Ground doors. “We go a goal down,” he continues. “Then 2-0 down. And when we concede a third I’m starting to put my head in my hands because I knew that Neil Warnock was quite superstitious. By 4-0 I’m now saying to myself: ‘Oh dear!’ “I know he’s going to be thinking - as a man who wore shorts in the dugout in December because his club hadn’t lost a game whilst wearing them – ‘What did I do differently?! It’s the rev’s prayer meeting!’ “Sure enough, I get a phone call saying, in the politest possible way, please don’t do that before a game again!” With stories like this, we joke with Chris that he should release a book, to which he reveals that one is on the horizon. But for every 4-0 drubbing at home to Scunthorpe United, Chris has tens of others that are full of positivity. And having sat with him in the Training Ground canteen for 20 minutes, it’s easy

to see why: “It’s a privilege to be able to help people at the club,” he begins to close out. “I’ve even had people turn up on my doorstep!” “People think that it’s totally different at a football club but ultimately we are all just people and there’s no major difference from my time as chaplain to a shopping centre in Croydon, Croydon Council and Croydon college.” Chris is now working for the Rowland Brothers Foundation, developing bereavement aftercare in the community. “It’s great to have a change of focus and to specialise in helping people who are struggling with grief and loss,” Chris says, “especially during these strange times. Lockdown has meant that many people feel like they haven’t been able to say goodbye properly to their loved ones.” Chris has already arranged a COVID-19 memorial service at Croydon Minster for next April. PALACE FOR LIFE

Money raised by fans through the Super Draw and today’s whole squad shirt auction will help Palace for Life Foundation host a summer extravaganza of activities for young people living in the communities around Selhurst Park. Following months in lockdown, young people have not had access to sports or social clubs for an extended period, in many cases missing out on seeing their friends, staying active and eating healthily. One of the activities the Foundation will run is a daytime holiday camp for those who live locally. The camp is aimed at the children of key workers, those who receive free school meals, looked after children and those above a healthy weight. This will take place throughout August, offering 5 to 11-year-olds the chance to play a range of sports, attend workshops and receive a healthy lunch each day.

Social-distancing and other safety measures will be strictly observed in order to keep children safe at all times. Deputy Head of Sports and Wellbeing at Palace for Life Foundation Michael Harrington said: “At the start of lockdown we were forced to cancel many of the sessions that we know families rely on heavily in south London. We work with children from a range of backgrounds and our sessions offer not just physical benefits, but also help with self-esteem and provide a safe space for socialising. “With restrictions now lifting, we’re delighted that we can safely welcome young people back this summer with a range of different activities on offer. “Many families have been struggling to provide healthy food for their children, which is why we are especially pleased

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

to be providing nutritious food as part of our holiday camp.” In addition, the Foundation is working with local partners to run drop-in sessions for teenagers, many of whom have not yet returned to education. As well as sports, workshops in areas such as mental health and employment will take place. Premier League Kicks community sessions and player development centres will commence in July, with small groups able to safely enjoy football again. The Foundation’s brand-new NCS programme will also be running in local schools, with 15 to 17-year-olds encouraged to take on social action projects to prepare them for the next stage in life. OVER ZOOM Tetteh-Quaye Addy is one of the many Palace Under-18s players who are playing up an age group and has now signed a first professional contract. Here, with Ben Mountain, TQ talks about that and his decision to leave the Eagles for Fulham before returning.

16.07.2020

58

“My family are all supportive but I don’t like a lot of attention. I don’t like people saying: ‘He’s done this, he’s done that.’ I prefer just a ‘well done’ when I get home, or people asking: ‘How did the game go?’ But that’s it. I don’t really like a big scene with a big crowd.” Those who know or have met the Palace Academy’s Tetteh-Quaye Addy might perhaps be surprised to learn of the understated, commendable modesty of the chipper, jinky forward when hearing how he tends to enjoy basking in the glory of a win or successful game on the pitches developing the future of English football. Known across the club for a full-faced smile, quick quip or zestful tendency to capture his peer’s attention, Addy, known affectionately by the initialism TQ, has more to him than just the energy needed to make it in football. Instead, he demonstrates a considered passion for the game and drive to achieve in a sport he has spent his life consumed by. “When I was younger,” he explains, “football was just one of those things I grew up around. I just played; I’d go to the park, see my friends, play in the cage, and I just grew up around football. “It’s always been a dream to play in the Premier League; it’s the biggest league in the world. When you’re young, it’s the only thing you

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

16.07.2020

“FOOTBALL WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS I GREW UP AROUND. I JUST PLAYED; I’D GO TO THE PARK, SEE MY FRIENDS,

think of. If I come through the ranks at Palace and get to play in the first-team one day, that would be one of my goals achieved. It would be a great feeling.” But despite holding high aspirations and an ambition to hit the top, no one allows complacency or entitlement to seep into their thoughts when working with the Academy and sustaining their careers, even at Under-18 level, is an unrelenting challenge for the young, aspiring footballers. Perhaps Addy knows this better than anyone. Signing for the Eagles in 2013, aged just 11, the south London-born prospect had already suffered a knockback when released by the Fulham Academy whom he joined having spent his pre-Academy years with Palace. The experience made Addy determined and focused and, he says, insistent on taking a rare shot at a second-chance when putting pen to paper for the Eagles. “When Palace took me back, I had my mind focused and set my goals. There have been a few ups and downs but it’s mainly been ups. You

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

just have to carry on trying to work and hopefully you can progress. “My family [reacted to the second chance at Palace] by saying: ‘Just make sure you take it.’ Everyone knew I was young still, I was Under-12s, so they knew there was a way to go. You don’t get multiple chances, especially in football because it’s a tight industry. Not everyone gets two chances. “All my friends, where I live in my area, all used to play for academies but they didn’t get back in once they were released. You’ve got to take your opportunity because you see people get released and they’ll be down.” But having kept a grasp on his position in the Palace Academy, Addy now has the chance to play regular football with the Under-23s despite just turning 18 in February. Playing alongside 23-year-olds and even seasoned first-team professionals is not a commonplace experience for most young men who are only just old enough to vote. But Addy takes it all in his stride with his own humble manner. And with a chipper grin, of course.

Wembley stadium, May 12th, 1990: the day it all came back to Ian Wright. In hindsight there was no way he was ever going to miss out on stamping his authority over the first FA Cup final appearance in Crystal Palace’s history. Even the two fractured shins he had suffered that season, the second of which he had sustained only eight weeks previously, were never likely to stop him. After all, this was Wright, and this was his moment. That injury had the striker striving intensively with Dave West, the club’s miracle working physiotherapist, with his focus firmly on making the showpiece. “I watched the semi-final still in a plaster cast,” Wright said. “But as hard as I was working to get fit, on the bike or running, I just didn’t think I was going to make it. Even a week away, Steve Coppell had a couple of behind-closed-doors matches. I was running — not limping — but I’d lost my calf muscle (in the plaster cast); he could see that. “But I was desperate to start. So, when I found out that I was on the bench, I was distraught. It’s Manchester United, Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes… one of

those fairy tale cup finals and, up to then, the game of my life. I thought: ‘I might never have a chance to play in a game like this again. I might not get on. By the time I do, it might be over.’” Wright, suited and booted, lingered in the goalmouth as the players performed their pre-match walkabout at Wembley. He touched the netting and stroked the post, praying: “Please, God. Let me get on; let me score in these goals.” As it transpired, he would do just that, though not before he had dispensed with established protocols on one of English football’s most traditional occasions. Matchday squads, led by their respective managers, were supposed to parade out of the tunnel before kick-off and, while the starting line-ups made their way to the halfway line for the presentation to the Duke of Kent, the substitutes would take their seats on the bench. Except Wright was having none of that. Clutching a football, he slipped between Mark Bright and Andy Gray and, with his fellow substitute Dave Madden following

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

his lead further back in the queue, made his way on to the pitch to join the handshakes in the centre. He was determined to soak it all up. The game would drift beyond the hour-mark before Wright made the stage his own. There was that wriggle beyond Mike Phelan and inside Gary Pallister, then slipped finish to equalise with virtually his first involvement. Then the far post volley in extra time to convert John Salako’s centre. “I’d promised him an Armani jacked if he set me up,” said Wright. “It was the perfect ball.” Palace, stunningly, were 3-2 up and led for 11 minutes before Hughes denied them their first major silverware near full-time. The replay, of course, would prove a damp squib and yield Alex Ferguson’s first trophy as United manager. But that season, one of recovery and consolidation in the First Division decorated with a first FA Cup final appearance, was already the best in the south Londoners’ history. Coppell’s team were on the map. The question was: could they ever better it?

61

The 2019/20 season marks 30 years on from the first year ‘back’ in the top-flight under Steve Coppell, and this week The Athletic writer Dom Fifield looks back at the Eagles’ first appearance in an FA Cup final.

PALACEXI IN TIME

PALACE FUME AT UEFA DECISION With only two places available for European football the following season, the five-year ban imposed on Liverpool, currently in second place, meant that whoever finished third would qualify for the UEFA Cup. Any hope for the Eagles, having been third since December, was dashed when UEFA lifted the ban on the Merseyside club. Chairman Ron Noades and manager Steve Coppell vented their anger at this decision, incurring the wrath of the Football Association with Coppell accusing the FA of not supporting the club: “It’s become a mundane end to the season after what might have been something really, really special in this club’s history.” UNDERSTRENGTH UNITED Rubbing salt into the wound were a United side who, as the 1990 FA Cup winners, were now contesting the Cup Winners’ Cup final the following Wednesday evening - a request from United to bring their league game v the Eagles

forward to the Friday evening was rejected by the police. So United fielded a weakened team, which included debutant Andrei Kanchelskis. The Palace boys were champing at the bit, with skipper Geoff Thomas commenting prematch: “We’re determined to go out with a bang.” Three minutes was all it took to prove Thomas right, when an error by ‘keeper Gary Walsh saw him drop the ball from a John Salako corner, to the feet of the ever-alert Ian Wright to prod home from close range. The remainder of the first-half saw both sides creating openings but the Red Devils blazed shots high and wide of Nigel Martyn’s goal. The shot-stopper was only troubled once by Danny Wallace. With United having lost defender Gary Pallister to injury, the Eagles put pressure on them from the start of the second-half and were rewarded with another goal around the hour-mark when, after shots from Eddie McGoldrick and Mark Bright had been repelled, Salako followed in with

an effort under Walsh’s body. Twenty minutes from the end, Man of the Match Salako, from 25 yards, turned and fired home a left footed shot into the top corner of the net. The chants from the Palace ends of ‘There’s only one Steve Coppell’ were in vain as Palace’s manager opted to avoid the limelight having just had his wisdom teeth extracted. SEASON SYNOPSIS In what is the club’s best season in the top flight, four players: John Humphrey, Nigel Martyn, Geoff Thomas and Ian Wright featured in all 52 league and cup games, for which 21 players were used. Wright finished top scorer with 25 goals, Thomas was awarded Player of the Year and Dean Gordon picked up the Young Player of the Year accolade. The club also announced that Wimbledon would begin a seven-year tenancy at Selhurst Park while both clubs’ reserve and youth teams would share Plough Lane.

Division Three championship medal 1920/21 awarded to Palace’s Alan Wood. Having arrived the season before, Wood made 19 appearances and scored six goals in the title-winning season. With the club’s announcement over the summer that is was staking its claim as the world’s oldest professional football club with a clear lineage back to 1861, we launched the Palace in the Attic campaign. 68

Crystal Palace faced Arsenal in the 1958/59 Southern Floodlight Cup final. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be for the Glaziers, but one fan is now in possession of the runners-up plaque awarded to Johnny Byrne.

“When I went to check out the available seats for my Season Ticket in 2002, there were a set of goalposts, that had been replaced, lying by the side of the pitch down near the corner of the old stand and the Whitehorse Lane stand - I took the opportunity to rescue a piece of the crossbar, which I still have.”

Zenith Data Cup final programme and tickets.

One Palace supporter still has their ticket from the famous victory over Manchester United in 1972: “Usually I stood on the Holmesdale terrace with my dad - having gone through the ‘boys’ turnstile. On this occasion he thought there might be ‘trouble’, so he bought me a ticket for the New Stand. He still went on the terrace, though (his funds probably did not stretch to two stand tickets!)."

The England cap awarded to Johnny Byrne after making his debut for England v Ireland, 1961.

“I was on holiday in Venice in the summer after the FA Cup final in 1990 when I decided to browse some football shirts on a stall and found this! “Made in Italy, I can only assume that a company had a job lot of blue shirts to shift and used the fact that the cup final had projected Palace to a wider audience. “In an odd way it is probably unique!”

PADDY McCARTHY

That day when you’re offering contracts to aspirational youngsters does mean there is some disappointing news to be given to others – it’s a day of mixed emotions. There are some tough conversations to be had, but on the flip side, there are some joyous ones as well, when you see the reaction on the players’ faces when they hear that their hard work has been rewarded. For those that aren’t retained, we have support mechanisms in place to manage their exits. Various personnel across different areas of the club – coaching, education and safeguarding - maintain contact with the released players, and guide them through their next steps with the aim of hopefully setting them up to continue their careers elsewhere. When we are deciding on our retained and released players, there are several aspects we consider and there is input from a number of coaches across the club. Our biggest consideration is a player’s pathway,

though; we aren’t just looking at the older players in front of him, but also the next crop of youngsters coming through. In Rob Street, first and foremost, he’s an unbelievable young man in terms of attitude and application. Those personality traits put him in good stead as a first-year scholar who was getting a good taste of Under-23s football this season. JK has regularly played up age groups, and has really hit the ground running this season, breaking through into the Under-23s a few games before lockdown. He is a totally different striker to Rob’s style of play, and the pair are fighting it out for that starting berth. It is creating a healthy competitiveness between the two players and it’s something I feel will benefit their development – I liken it to when Aaron Wilbraham joined Palace and that competition to start pushed Glenn Murray to a Championship record 30 goals in the 2012/13 season.

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

We’ve got a similar situation with the two ‘keepers, Rohan and Jacob, with the pair having contrasting strengths. I’m hoping their different approaches to the game will see them learn from one another. In TQ, we are excited to see how his development goes. He is another player who experienced Under-23s football earlier than most, but he has impressed with his energetic displays. Jude’s contract is one I’m delighted to see finalised because he has had to fight to earn it. He has really matured in the last six months and that’s all due to the work he put in to return to fitness after suffering a terrible injury before the FA Youth Cup game at Reading back in December. We’ve signed up a talented and exciting group of youngsters, but it’s important I and the experienced coaching staff keep them grounded. Cliché or not: the hard work starts now.

71

I’m delighted that Rob Street, John-Kymani (JK) Gordon, TQ Addy, Rohan Luthra, Jacob Russell and Jude Russell have all signed their first professional contracts with the club – a well-deserved achievement but they’re fully aware this is just the beginning.

AMBER STOBBS

The 18th May, 2020 signified the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. But for me it will always represent so much more: it was the day I shared my story. The aim in revealing my 10-year battle with mental health and publicly letting in family, friends and strangers into my darkest moment, was to help others who are having their own internal struggles. I wanted to encourage those people to open up a lot sooner than I did; I needed them to know that it really is okay not be okay. If I wasn’t expecting feedback, then I certainly wasn’t expecting the unwavering positive sentiment around sharing my story. I was invited onto BBC Radio London for a live chat, I’ve done several podcasts and video interviews and I’m now talking to various organisations about work I can do with them as an ambassador for mental health.

The high-profile nature of those moments is great in raising awareness but for me it is moments such as when someone I went to school with, who I hadn’t spoken to for years, messaged me to say: ‘well done and thank you.’ Or when friends have shared the article with people they know who are struggling, who I don’t know, and it has helped them in one way or another. My inbox filling up on the article’s release day and getting 10 minutes on BBC Radio London are both great steps. But Mental Health Awareness Week should be 52 weeks a year and that’s the next challenge: how can I, at a time where I’ve never felt more supported, continue to break down the stigma of mental health? We have to do that together; we have to talk. If my aim was to help others, then a surprising positive knock-on effect is that I’ve now realised

CRYSTAL PALACE v MANCHESTER UNITED

it was also the next step in my journey. I have spoken regularly about feeling like I had this mask on when outside of my bedroom, pretending to the world I was happy. By going public with my story, that mask has lifted - but this time I’m smiling underneath. I feel like this step has allowed me to truly be myself. It’s important to remember that just because I’ve now told the world I’ve not been okay, that I am now okay. People assume that I’m over the struggles due to the steps I’ve taken. But please never forget that mental health is a constant battle. Yes, I’m in a good place now but you never know when you might have a setback. The only difference is I now have a different outlook on life and I have a support network in place to deal with any issues that might crop up. I’m delighted I have no regrets in sharing my story. And neither should you.

73

Thankfully we are in a world that is increasingly opening up and understanding the struggles each and every one of us go through on differing levels.
