Dave M©Clelland Everyone at Crystal Palace Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Croydon Advertiser Palace correspondent, Dave McClelland. Covering a range of sports across 45 years with the publication, Dave worked his way up to the role of Sports Editor, retiring in 1999 after an esteemed career. In the times before 24-hour sports channels and social media, under his guidance, the Croydon Advertiser became known as the go-to outlet for Palace fans to get the latest views from the
Chairman, manager and players every Friday morning. Production Manager Terry Byfield was one such regular reader of the Advertiser, recalling: “Like so many fans reading this, I grew up heading to the newsagents on a Friday morning to buy the Croydon Advertiser for the Palace section, so it was great to get an insight into how it was all put together by getting to know Dave and his team so well. “Dave was a respected journalist in the press box at Selhurst Park and will always be remembered by the Palace fanbase as someone they could rely on to
deliver the inside track on the club with honesty and an appetite to know what the fans wanted.” The club extends its deepest sympathy to Dave’s family and friends at this sad time.
On this day 04 Jan 2003 An FA Cup trip to Bloomfield Road looked set to fell Palace at the first hurdle in 2003, Tony Popovic’s own-goal on 10 minutes giving our Division Two hosts the lead. But then stepped-up Tommy Black, whose second-half brace – his sixth and seventh goals in just five games – turned the tie on its head. Black: meet Blackpool.

A very warm welcome to Selhurst Park to Sean Dyche, his Everton team and staff, and welcome back to every Crystal Palace supporter for what is sure to be a closely contested FA Cup tie this evening.
T
here is always something special about the FA Cup third round, and throughout my career I have looked forward to seeing the results coming through from up and down the country. Despite kicking off our campaign tonight, before the rest of the games get underway this weekend, I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the competition beginning in earnest once again. I am writing these notes prior to our game versus Brentford. Earlier this week at Stamford Bridge we suffered a late body blow after a wholly positive performance, with the late awarding of a penalty. I thought the players matched Chelsea in every department throughout the game. As well as moments of great joy, football can provide us with moments of real frustration, and that was the case last Wednesday. Where at one stage we may have been saying we deserved more than a draw, we ended up with no points to show for our efforts. If the team continue to show the commitment and application that they have in recent fixtures, I am

convinced we will soon start to pick up the points we deserve. Back to the job in hand, I have known Sean for a long time and I know this evening will be a tough test. His sides are always wellorganised and well-disciplined, and so we will have to be at our hard-working best to progress to the next round. The last meeting here came down to very fine margins, and this time we hope we can be on the right side of those fine margins to come away with victory. Thank you as always for your support. I thought that the atmosphere that you generated in the match against Brighton was incredible and it really helped the team in what is always a difficult fixture. The players and staff are always buoyed by the atmosphere you can create at Selhurst Park, and I know that will be the case again this evening. Enjoy the game

Welcome back to Selhurst Park for the first time in 2024 – a very happy New Year to every Crystal Palace supporter here this evening for the beginning of our FA Cup campaign.
I
t seems strange that we were only here five days ago for what was such an important win against Brentford, but we were happy to end the year on a high in front of you, our loyal supporters. Hopefully we can build on that display, seize the momentum from it and continue to raise the bar to reach the results we know we are capable of. We were disappointed going into the game after the defeat at Chelsea, particularly given how well the boys had played throughout the 90 minutes. It’s not an easy thing to go away anywhere in the Premier League and have so much control and attacking endeavour, but to do it at Stamford Bridge was a sign of what this team can produce. Just as we thought we were pushing for a winner, we saw a decision go against us and suddenly ended up empty-handed. Nevertheless, we were determined to take the positives from the things we got right on the night, and on Saturday that came to fruition in a performance full of character, determination and, when

it mattered, quality. Michael’s and Ebs’ goals were obviously brilliant, but every player in the squad rallied after going an early goal down and, buoyed by your support, played their parts in turning it around in what was a fully-deserved win. The FA Cup holds special memories for every football fan, and as a player I have enjoyed some of the best moments of my career in this competition. Third-round weekend is one of the highlights of the footballing calendar, with teams from all levels and all areas meeting for what might be the first time in decades, and upsets galore. We face an Everton side we have already met once this season, and it was a game we were disappointed to lose. They are a difficult side to break down, but we know that with the attacking talent we have at our disposal we can

create chances, and our defensive unit can soak up pressure; if we play to the very best of our ability, we can come away with a positive result this evening and book our place in the fourth round. It feels unusual to be playing in the FA Cup third round under the floodlights on a Thursday, but we know how loud the atmosphere can become at Selhurst Park for these evening kick-offs so I hope we can turn it to our advantage. I can’t wait to witness the atmosphere I’m sure you are going to create this evening. I hope we can produce a performance to make you proud. God Bless. JW

Welcome to all visiting supporters, players, staff and directors of Everton to Selhurst Park for tonight’s FA Cup match. Welcome as always to each and every Crystal Palace supporter here to get behind Roy’s team for our first outing of 2024.
A
s is usually the case for FA Cup matches, with some tickets going on general sale, I would like to particularly welcome anyone who is with us for the first time tonight. Today the team will wear, for the only time, our special edition fourth kit. It is a design we all loved during the kit development process, and felt that launching a shirt exclusively as a fundraiser for the Foundation was a fitting way to celebrate and expand their outstanding work in our community. The win over Brentford was a fantastic day all round, with some memorable performances all over the pitch and a brilliant atmosphere in the stands. There were some notable performances and goals from Michael and Ebs, as well as a solid overall team performance, and a wonderful save near the end from Dean. It’s been a tough run of games and injuries, during which we have taken some important points, but it was great to get three points going into the New Year.

We now turn to the FA Cup, in which we have played Everton six times over the past 100 years or so, making them one of our more regular opponents. We will be looking for a repeat of last time out: a fantastic 4-0 win that secured a spot at a Wembley semi-final. At that time, everyone associated with the club really galvanised behind that cup run and I very much hope we can get a result today and enjoy a similar, if not better, run than in 2022. I would finally like to wish Jordan the very best of luck as he heads to AFCON with Ghana. He has been magnificent for us this season (as he is every season) – and I noted that he completed more dribbles

than any other Premier League player in 2023, which is an impressive achievement, as well as contributed some important assists and goals. When he returns, he will be on the verge of completing 200 appearances for Crystal Palace – something Nathaniel celebrated recently. Good luck in the Ivory Coast, Jordan – we’ll all be watching. With no men’s match next weekend, I urge you to support the Women’s team at Sutton for their FA Cup clash against Blackburn Rovers (14th January). Tickets are available via cpfc.co.uk. Throw everything you have behind Roy’s team tonight, and enjoy the game. Up the Palace

Nigel Martyn reached the FA Cup final with Crystal Palace in 1990, before earning cult-hero status at Everton more than a decade later. He tells Will Robinson about the rollercoaster journey to Wembley, and what makes these two clubs so special in the ever-changing modern era…
14
W
hen most of us head down Wembley Way for the very first time, our minds are on trivial matters. How much will a pint cost inside? Will the tubes be delayed post-match? Where, actually, is my seat? For Nigel Martyn, these were of no concern. He knew where he was going that day: out on to the pitch to start in goal in an FA Cup final. It’s not bad for a first visit. “Going there for the FA Cup final in 1990, that was my first time I’d ever been there,” the former-Palace and Everton goalkeeper remembers. “That was probably the most exciting time.” You can say that again. Martyn had barely been out of non-league football when he stepped out at Wembley with Crystal Palace. It was some journey. It all started with a discussion with Steve Coppell. “When you’re a lad just over two years of coming out of playing non-league football in Cornwall, the opportunity to go and play in the First Division was a big deal,” he remembers. “It was a team that had just gone up and was fighting – it’s quite an exciting proposition to go to a team like that. “[Steve] told me that he had some very good players. He mentioned Ian Wright and Mark Bright, and he said: ‘Look, these guys are going to score goals in this division as well. They scored them down in the Second Division, and they will score them here’. He said there was an exciting bunch

of young players with one or two experienced players mixed in.” Looking back, he senses some fortune in the timing of his arrival. “I was basically being brought in to bolster them more than anything, because Perry [Suckling] was there and he had done so well the season before. Conceding nine at Liverpool and five at Forest not long after may have messed up his confidence a little bit, and had results been a bit more positive I’m sure he would have played the whole season.” Instead, in came Martyn as the country’s first £1 million goalkeeper. Did he feel the pressure? That was someone else’s problem. “I can remember being interviewed at the time, and what I said on that day I stick with now: ‘No, it’s not my

valuation’. At the time I didn’t think any player was worth a million quid! If two football clubs want to agree a fee, that’s on them and not on me. “My only pressure was just to go out and do my best every time, and that’s all I ever tried to do.” It certainly worked. Palace progressed through the FA Cup, eventually meeting Liverpool at Villa Park in a now-legendary semi-final. “At Bristol Rovers we were always hoping to get a big club away, to play in big stadiums. Once I’d moved to Palace, you were looking for more favourable draws so that we could get through. “That’s what happened in 1989/90, until the semi-final. If you were going to seed teams, you would probably have put Liverpool first, second and third, Manchester United fourth and ourselves and Oldham as rank outsiders! To go and take the best team in the country was a big deal and a brilliant day. “The support, the balloons, the performance, the theatre of the whole thing. It just had everything, didn’t it? It’s one that will go down in Palace folklore. You would prefer a clean sheet, but that wouldn’t have been as much fun, would it?! “It’s all folklore. The chairman ended up in the baths with his expensive suit on. It showed how far we had come since I had joined in November: there was something building there.” Before long, however, focus shifted to

the final, with some more unusual preparations than players deal with today. Martyn and co. were on their way to Abbey Road to perform their FA Cup final single, a cover of Glad All Over. “We did Blue Peter, we did Derek Jameson Live – my kids love to get that video up on YouTube to take the mickey out of me sitting there with my moustache,” he laughs. “They were good times. It was crazy because every time you would leave training the manager or a senior player would say: ‘Right, keep tomorrow afternoon free because we’re doing something different’.” The final itself against Manchester United came quickly, and the dreaded draw meant an even more dreaded replay, and a
18
bizarre purgatory while the rest of the footballing world headed off for the summer. “If you speak to anybody on both sides, the feeling was we’d rather have got it finished on that day. “We had the build-up, then the game was pretty exciting. We had a big party organised afterwards, and you don’t know what to do: you weren’t celebrating but you weren’t drowning your sorrows. It was very strange. We had a meal and a few drinks, but you are aware that you are playing again in a few days. “It was odd because the rest of the footballing world had stopped, and we were still carrying on. What Steve had to do was to keep everybody focused without training being too tough. But there is no doubt that the replay, an evening game, didn’t have the same feel about it. It was a bit of an anti-climax if I’m honest.” Defeat in the final took some getting over, but the following season Palace finished in third place and won the ZDS Cup at Wembley. It seemed as though, to quote Martyn’s fellow 1990s recording artists D.Ream, things could only get better. “I remember thinking at the ZDS Cup final: ‘Crumbs, this is great – we’re going to get to Wembley almost every year!’” he remembers. “As a player, I never got back there for another final.” Martyn headed to Leeds United after years of exemplary service with Palace, but as his career began to wind down an offer to join Everton

was too good to turn down – particularly for a player who had idolised Neville Southall as a child. The similarities with Palace were evident: the upstarts looking to crash the party. “I’m not trying to be derogatory to my old club at Leeds, but I left a squad of players at Leeds that were a lot better than the ones I went to at Everton. Yet what we did at Everton, we fought a little bit harder and things were a bit better and we stayed up and Leeds went down that year. “I wasn’t happy to see Leeds go down because I’ve got a lot of friends there. I had a great relationship with the supporters there. I’d rather they stayed up, but on the flip-side, I wasn’t in the team and to me it felt very

political while I wasn’t in the team. So to get an opportunity to go somewhere else and then do well is a nice thing to happen really. “We were right at the bottom of the table and we fought and scrapped and did everything we could and sort of stayed up. But I was lucky enough to walk off with Player of the Year that year for the club. I was pleased to be able to finish my career with sort of dignity still intact really, because it felt like it’d been taken away a bit.” Guiding Palace to an FA Cup final; guiding Everton into the Champions League places. At either end of his career, Martyn was part of a team of fighters who refused to take no for an answer. Does he see the similarities between the two? “Definitely – both have a real sense of community and they try not to lose that. To have some access to players is difficult for regular supporters, and I think that is something that Everton and Palace try to make available, for supporters and charities and hospitals and things around the community. That is so important. “It was like an old-fashioned football club the way Palace was when I was there, and Everton still had that old-fashioned feel about it as well. And I got on really well with the supporters and the staff and everybody, so I’ve got really good memories of it.” From non-league football to the heights of Wembley and more: Martyn retired with 23

England caps, was voted in both Crystal Palace and Leeds United’s all-time XIs, and – perhaps most sentimentally important – was nicknamed ‘Big Nige’ at Goodison Park, in comparison to his hero ‘Big Nev’. When the two sides kick-off this evening, Martyn will be watching with fond memories of both, and fonder memories still of this great old competition, where anyone can triumph against the odds, and where hard work is more important than reputation. It’s an ethos that served him well throughout an extraordinary career, and will continue to serve both clubs long into the future

This season, we’re putting your questions to members of the Palace squad. To have a chance of seeing your question answered by a first-team star, just head to cpfc.co.uk and submit your burning enquiries…
nigel martyn What is your favourite sport to watch other than football? Grace Riley Cricket. I still play on a Saturday for a team – would you believe I keep wicket? I bat a bit as well. That’s probably the sport I love the most, and in 20 years playing football I wasn’t allowed to play cricket, so once I got my ankle sorted after finishing I have played ever since.
Who was your boyhood idol? Jenny Elms It was either Ray Clemence or Neville Southall. I managed to play against both of them: Ray right at the end of his career, but Neville also for a few seasons as well. That’s the surreal part about something like that. You can be a kid and aspiring to try to be like certain people, and then you actually play against them – it’s crazy.
Who did you support as a child?
Would you rather win the World Cup or the European Cup?
Alan Tykes Plymouth Argyle, coming from Cornwall. I went fairly often – in fact I was at Villa Park in 1984 to watch them play in the FA Cup semi-final.
Steven Irsham The World Cup with England. That’s the short answer. Anything you can do for your country would be amazing. the follow-up
If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be? Caolan Commane I would love to have been a cricketer. I probably would have to admit that I wouldn’t have been good enough to have been a professional cricketer, but that’s what I would’ve liked to have been. But crumbs, if I hadn’t have been a footballer, I would’ve been working probably lots of different jobs down in Cornwall!

everton Opposition preview What a phenomenal turnaround Sean Dyche has overseen at Everton since the Premier League’s announcement of their 10-point deduction in mid-November. After failing to win any of their first five matches and winning just two of their opening 10 in the league this season, they suddenly rocketed up the Premier League form table having won four games on the trot. A difficult Christmas fixture list, however, losing three games on the spin against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been a reminder of the battle still on their hands. With Everton moving into their brand new stadium for the start of the 2025/26 season, Premier League survival is financially paramount, and the form of Dyche’s side will do much

to ease fears in Merseyside for the immediate future of the club. Any discussion of this fixture in the context of the FA Cup brings back memories of Palace’s four-goal demolition of Everton in the 2022 quarter-finals, with Selhurst Park bouncing as the Eagles booked their place at Wembley. That result came little over 100 years since Palace’s only previous win against the Toffees in the FA Cup: an almighty upset in January 1922, when the south London outfit – then in Division Two – put six goals past their Division One hosts at Goodison Park. Palace are yet to beat Everton in their four meetings since their March 2022 triumph, however, and Roy Hodgson’s men will be looking for revenge after Everton came out on top in a five-goal thriller at Selhurst Park in November.
Manager Sean Dyche -
After losing 7 of his first 12 matches as a manager to Palace, Dyche has proven something of a nemesis for the Eagles in recent times, unbeaten in his last 7 meetings across spells at Everton and Burnley. He kept the latter in the Premier League for almost a decade, and has impressed many with his results thus far at Goodison Park. everton

Ben Bailey Smith, aka Doc Brown, does it all – acting, rapping, writing, directing, you name it. The multifaceted Palace fan is also a patron of Palace for Life Foundation. In each edition, he offers his unique take on the world in SE25...
GLAD ALL OVER AGAIN I love the FA Cup. I know the Premier League and Champions League have sort of usurped all other competitions in the minds of British football fans, but if you’re my age or older you’ll know that even the European Cup Final couldn’t dominate a day like the FA Cup Final used to. My local newsagents – not far from Wembley itself - used to sell a shiny A4 Cup Final programme that I would buy in the morning and devour before the build-up started on telly BEFORE LUNCH. It felt like a national holiday. Now obviously, for a Palace fan there’s not been a massive amount to love the FA Cup for in the partisan sense – two finals and a Danny Butterfield hat trick notwithstanding – but I suppose the competition really speaks to fans of smaller clubs because unlike the Champions League or Premier League, everyone is invited. Everyone has a chance – no matter how slim. On these pages a couple of issues ago, I went into detail about how I became known as the North
London Palace Fan aged 12 – it was a story partly about the cultural dominance of Liverpool Football Club in the 1980s, but it was also about the FA Cup heroics of Crystal Palace Football Club in 1990. The Villa Park Semi is still my favourite ever Palace game and the red and blue balloon final itself was just iconic. “Wright. His first chance to show what he can do. And he’s through! Oh, what an impact from the substitute!” ben bailey-smith

John Motson’s commentary still plays in my head like the chorus of a pop song, over 30 years later. While that memory remains strong, it has felt to me that with every passing year since then, the cultural significance of the FA Cup has diminished bit by bit, with managers playing weakened sides, the start times of the final being shunted back and forth… I even remember some Premier League games being scheduled on the same day as the Semis a few years back – sacrilege! And yet, on a personal level for me, the magic of the Cup has never died. On the contrary, the magic of the Cup is, in a roundabout way, the reason I have this column. It’s the reason the utter legend that is Steve Parish might invite me down to games as his guest, it’s the reason I went from being a lonely North London Eagle in Exile as a kid to being surrounded and supported by thousands of brilliant Palace fans all year round.
Here’s how it began: we never beat Spurs. So when I saw us drawn against them – away - in the fifth round of the 2016 edition, I feared the worst. Martin Kelly had other ideas and suddenly we were through to face Reading. When I looked at who was left in the competition, I started to get that dangerous tingle of excitement – we could actually go all the way here! Easy to forget the deadlock wasn’t broken at the Madejski for 86 entire minutes, but we squeaked through and we were off to Wembley!
After a resplendent win against Watford, a Palacesupporting DJ that I knew suggested I record a good old-fashioned FA Cup song and I thought: ‘why not?’ And it was in the national stadium, minutes away from where I grew up, that my whole relationship with Palace was about to change forever. After a resplendent win against Watford, a Palacesupporting DJ that I knew suggested I record a good old-fashioned FA Cup song and I thought: ‘why not?’ The resulting effort – Glad All Over Again – was a fun little ditty for ben bailey-smith
charity and quickly became a fan favourite. Eventually, Parish and I connected over the song on social media and the club asked to play it pre-match at the Final. That moment, plus the Puncheon goal of course, were two of the greatest of my life as a Palace supporter. The song brought me closer to the club I love, began a long association with the amazing Palace for Life Foundation, led to me meeting various players and staff and eventually, I guess someone clocked that the irreverent writing technique in the lyric was something of a transferable skill and a quirky column was born. None of this means we’ll knock out Everton today but by jove we’ve done it before and we can be glad all over, all over again! Here’s to more Cup Days. Happy New Year and UTP!

next up: arsenal Palace head to north London after a short winter break to take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 20th January (12:30 GMT). Travel: The nearest tube station to Arsenal is, well…Arsenal – but supporters can also alight at Holloway Road or Finsbury Park for a short walk to the ground. Finsbury Park is also served by National Rail services, while London Overground services to Highbury & Islington will drop you within walking distance. Pre-match: There are no designated away pubs around the Emirates Stadium – supporters can enter the away end where an ‘early bird’ offer allows purchase of a pie and a pint for £5 up to 45 minutes before kick-off.
BEAT BRIGHTY In each edition, club icon Mark Bright calls it how he sees it and predicts events from the weekend’s football. See how you fare and try to Beat Brighty! Scoring: One point for every correct result, three for a correct scoreline.
