ROY HODGSON
We are dedicating tonight’s match to support the work of Kick It Out. Since 1993 Kick It Out have helped football make strides to ensure it’s a sport for everyone, regardless of background. The high-profile incidents, which continue to mar our game, underline how valuable their work still is. We must all play our part to ensure football is for all. Remember: if you are a victim or witness of discrimination, report it to Kick It Out. We’ve had little time between facing Manchester City and tonight’s game with Southampton, and there has not been an opportunity between the two matches for me to write these notes, which were sent to print on Friday night. Therefore I am commenting without knowing the outcome of Saturday’s game at the Etihad stadium. We have faced two of the country’s biggest clubs in Arsenal and Manchester City recently and I was very satisfied to collect a point against Arsenal at Selhurst. Taking a point from those two fixtures is always more than acceptable, so I will be delighted with anything else we may have earned against Pep Guardiola and his team.
Signing Cenk Tosun as the club’s earliest Premier League January acquisition was very pleasing. Cenk is a player that Dougie Freedman and his scouting organisations have long admired and it is no secret that we have been keen on securing his services for some time now. I am glad to say that our interest was not without foundation, as Cenk has now come in to the squad and settled quickly. His ability is clear and, while he has not had much game-time lately, he is a player who clearly has Premier League ability and one who knows the league and it’s challenges. Signing Cenk so soon after the transfer window opened was a statement of intent from our Chairman and the board and I am confident we will continue to bolster our ranks as the month progresses. The situation with the squad’s injuries continues and those players who have featured so frequently of late have been a credit to themselves and the club. I am glad to say that many of the team who have been unavailable in our last few matches are making good progress and I am
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
positive we will see several of them back in the group as this month comes to a close. The injury that Max Meyer sustained under the challenge of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appeared very disconcerting, but Max was upbeat following the final whistle and has thrown himself into recovery as I expected him to. As he has since stated, Pierre meant no malice in the tackle, and we can only hope for Max’s swift return to fitness. We can ill afford to send even more players to the treatment room! Looking to this evening’s opposition, Southampton have achieved an impressive turnaround in results from the festive period up until now, but this does not surprise me in the slightest. The only side they have been unable to defeat in their past six games has been ourselves and we are more than aware of the threat they pose tonight. However, we have prepared diligently for the task ahead and I am expecting another tight and hardfought encounter with our rivals from the south coast tonight. Enjoy the game.
05
Good evening and welcome to Ralph Hasenhüttl, the Southampton supporters and players, and to each of you here tonight supporting Crystal Palace.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC
I was very nervous watching the Arsenal game as a fan in the stands because this is an experience I am not used to. Whoever we were playing was never going to be easy due to the injury problems. So I must say that the lads who went out there to face Arsenal all have to be very proud of the point against them. They are – and always will be – a top club in this country. Tonks was captain against Arsenal in my absence. And already this season we’ve had Gary when I wasn’t available against West Ham and I think that shows just how many leaders we have in this squad – I could name many of my teammates but someone like James McArthur could also be a great captain with the way he plays and his leadership qualities.
We’ve welcomed Cenk from Everton for the season and that is great for us. We always want to bring in players that will give us greater quality in the squad. I know this month is about transfers and things that may or may not happen. But I must comment on what a great job the boys have done to achieve our position in the table and for what they’ve all given, particularly in the last six weeks of the crazy football schedule. We’ve used a constant 11 to 13 players and it’s so tough to recover but we’ve all worked hard, dug in and performed well. Tonight’s game will see the club recognise the work that Kick It Out is doing to make football a better sport for all and the squad recognise the need for us to play our part.
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
We are facing an in-form Southampton, with our point against them at St Mary’s in December a positive one when you consider the run they’re on which has seen them defeat Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. It is a cliché, I know. But every single game will be tough and we must be focussed. We are at our home of Selhurst and that makes us favourites but we must show what we are capable of on the pitch and continue our improved home form in the league – I’m pleased we’ve been able to turn that around from last season for you, our loyal fans. Make some noise!
07
Today is the final game of my suspension and I cannot wait to get back out on the pitch with my teammates and to play in front of you again, especially at our home of Selhurst.

This has gone to print before the Man City game so I can only speak about the draw against Arsenal. After a rough first 25 minutes, the players put in an excellent performance and with the sendingoff we might be a little disappointed not to have won the match. Although a fantastic double save by Vicente at the end secured a well-earned point. Perhaps more notable than the fourth consecutive positive result against Arsenal, the game represented our 250th consecutive game in the Premier League. Starting with a 1-0 loss (a terrible penalty decision) at Selhurst Park on 18th August 2013 against Spurs, via an FA Cup final, we are now the 20th most successful Premier League team of all-time. It’s certainly been an eventful six and a half years so we compiled
all the results to take a look back at some of the stats, facts and records. That Spurs game was a precursor to a poor goalscoring record against them, they are the most established team we have scored the least against, three miserly goals - although we have beaten them twice in the cup. Let’s hope we can improve that soon! Perhaps even more remarkable is the name of the team we have scored the most goals against. 22 goals against this year’s runaway leaders Liverpool. We’ve collected the most points (19) against three teams: Leicester City, West Ham and Stoke City with the best goal difference (+9) being Leicester. And during this time we have seen every team that were there that first season of our return - apart from the top six, Everton, West Ham
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
and Southampton - get relegated. Norwich, Aston Villa and Newcastle have since bounced back. Joel has played a massive 179 of the 250 games with Wilf and James McArthur close behind on 170 and 163 respectively. We currently have the secondhighest points tally for this point of the season and are well in excess of this point last year. Considering everything, especially the injuries, it’s a fantastic tally so far. Hats off to Roy, Ray, the rest of the staff and the players. Huge thanks to everyone that’s contributed along the way, here’s to the next 250! Our opponents today have been on a bit of a tear recently so let’s hope we can stop them in their tracks! Up the Palace.

Welcome to the directors, management, players and supporters of Southampton Football Club, and to each and every Palace fan here tonight.

Cenk Tosun is finally an Eagle, more than two years on from when the club first tried to bring the striker to SE25. Here, with Dan Blazer, Tosun looks back at his time under former Palace boss Sam Allardyce whilst at Everton, relives the 2002 World Cup and more.

Cenk Tosun’s loan until the end of the season isn’t a big timeframe in a player’s career, but it’s an important one for him and his new club. There’s a European Championships on the horizon and Tosun is a player who played the equivalent minutes of less than 26 Premier League games in two years at Everton. Knowing there is a finite window to make this time count, Palace have targeted a driven, professional and focussed footballer – perhaps with something to prove. Reflecting upon the first few days in SE25, there is a feeling that Tosun already understands the club. “Family first,” he opens up with when asked what he’s learnt about Crystal Palace already. He goes on: “Like at Everton, it is extremely professional and well-organised. But Crystal Palace is more intimate, it is more like a big family where everyone knows everyone. I’m so happy that I have joined this family.” The early signs from a footballing point of view are promising, with an impressive 22-minute cameo against Arsenal – just 24 hours after signing on the dotted line. But what about the change in lifestyle away from the Training Ground and Selhurst Park? After all, the hustle and bustle of a capital city isn’t for everyone, but
thankfully it is something he and his family are accustomed to. “I’m used to it because of living in Istanbul,” he laughs with the appreciation of knowing what life in a capital city entails. “When we had days off at Everton my wife and I would come down to London to explore.” The family-first theme continues with Tosun revealing
“ CRYSTAL PALACE IS MORE INTIMATE, IT IS MORE LIKE A BIG FAMILY WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE. I’M SO HAPPY THAT I HAVE JOINED THIS FAMILY ” his wife and two children – a 16-month and a two-month old – are house-hunting in the area: “I have two little children and I couldn’t do without them.” Tosun thoughtfully pauses ever so slightly, but it’s enough to know how hard it would be if his family had stayed in Merseyside during his loan stint at Palace.
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
House-hunting, relocating his family and comments in this interview, Tosun is doing all he can to make this loan spell a success for him and the club. It’s why the squad have clearly taken to their new recruit, highlighted when our chat is interrupted by club captain Luka Milivojevic. After a brief exchange between the two, it’s clear Milivojevic is letting Tosun know a couple of recent queries and requests have been addressed. Evidently, despite being suspended for Arsenal, Manchester City and tonight’s game against Southampton, there’s still plenty of duties for Milivojevic to carry out. Settling in quickly is imperative for any new recruit, and Tosun is hoping to make up for lost time, as Sam Allardyce so nearly brought him to Palace three years ago. The pair did eventually unite at Everton, and Allardyce is a manager Tosun thoroughly enjoyed working for: “Big Sam is a top man,” he says. “I really liked him. I loved to work for him. He is a very honest guy who always told you to your face and not behind your back and I like that; I respond to that. If I played poorly I don’t need an arm round the shoulder, I just want the truth. “Sam wanted me when he was Palace manager but it didn’t happen due to a couple of small issues so I’m glad I managed to

work with him at Everton; he is a great person.” If Allardyce is so fondly remembered by Tosun then Senol Günes – the manager Tosun names as his most influential – must be extremely impressive. “Günes was the manager I worked with at Besiktas,” he reminisces, “and is now the manager of the Turkish national team again. I know him well and we had some really good times in the Champions League and Süper Lig. “He was like a father figure for us at Besiktas and it’s great to work closely with him still at international level.” Günes may not realise this but the greatest moments he gave Tosun were not the back-to-back Süper Lig titles with Besiktas. In fact, an 11-year-old Tosun wasn’t even involved; it happened during the summer of 2002. Günes was manager of the Turkish national team for the summer’s World Cup, a competition Turkey hadn’t kicked a ball in since 1954. That summer 17-and-a-half years ago was everything to Tosun: a passionate Turk who could only dream of one day pulling on his national team’s shirt, with the badge proudly displayed across his chest. “It was amazing,” Tosun reflects. “The games were in Japan and South Korea, so sometimes
they were kicking-off very early. I didn’t go to school just so I could watch the games. “After big wins we’d be in the streets, jumping on cars with Turkish flags and driving around because we were so proud.” Tosun is now flailing his arms above his head, laughing. He can still see, feel and relive every moment of Turkey’s remarkable run to the being crowned the third-best team in the world after defeating co-hosts South Korea, 3-2, in the third-place play-off. Tosun continued: “After our first World Cup for almost 50 years, to then finish third, oh we were so proud as Turks. Even though I grew up in Germany, and perhaps I had the German discipline, but in my heart I was always Turkish. It was a great feeling.” Unprompted, Tosun begins rolling off the names of the players involved with the child-like excitement of opening a new pack of Paninis before the tournament begins: “Rüstü Reçber, Alpay Özalan and Hasan Sas these are all great players. We had a great team for that World Cup.” Turkey haven’t been at a World Cup since and have qualified for just three of the five Euros since the summer of 2002. That’s a surprise to us and Tosun: “We always seem to make it difficult for ourselves to actually qualify for the tournaments,” he

explains. “But if we get there then we mostly get good results and do ourselves proud.” Having played at Euro 2016 - exiting at the group stage - and also qualifing for this summer’s upcoming tournament, it appears Turkey are finally finding consistency on the international stage, with Tosun leading the line for the Crescent-Stars. “I played at the Euros in 2016.” It’s an experience Tosun recalls fondly. “I could feel how great it was to play in this big tournament. You feel like everyone is watching, you feel like a real footballer and it is just a different tournament [from club football].” If Euro 2016 whetted the appetite for Tosun then this summer’s competition is one that he is expecting to result in much more than a group stage exit. “We have an exciting young squad now with a couple of experienced players,” Tosun explains. “I believe in this team and I hope we will go far in the upcoming Euros because it is not nice to play in one tournament and then miss two or three. It has to be a regular thing for Turkey now. “Cengiz Ünder is playing in Rome and Merih Demiral is playing in Turin and I hope he recovers quickly from his injury because he is a good player. Then we have Çaglar Söyüncü in the Premier League with Leicester City performing well.”
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
For Turkey, Tosun wears the No.9 with pride. At Palace, the forward has been handed the No.20. However, Tosun has history with – and one eye on - the No.23. But why 23? Space Jam has a part to play, with 23 being the number of basketball icon, Michael Jordan. Tosun explains: “I just think he was the greatest sportsman of all-time. I loved watching his videos – yes, even Space Jam: what a film. He was a great person and player and his influence was big on me which is why I wanted the No.23 at Besiktas. “When I came to Everton Seamus Coleman had that number, and he had been there for almost 10 years so I certainly couldn’t take it. Then here, when I came to Palace, it was Victor Camarasa’s number, who has left now, so who knows, maybe I’ll get my Michael Jordan shirt number here one day. Then again, maybe No.20 will bring me luck as well!” If Tosun’s spell is a success, then it won’t be down to luck as it’s clear what a driven and motivated footballer the 28-yearold is. It’s hard to not wish for an impact akin to Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi, who arrived in south London in similar circumstances this time last year. And if Tosun starts firing, the club-wide ambition of securing a top-half Premier League finish could be within its grasp.

One thing you never hear anybody talk about is VAR. So I thought I’d write a column about it. *Checking for sarcasm* *two-minute wait* Decision: sarcasm. Don’t worry, it’s not an opinion piece, I just thought it may be interesting to know what goes on from a club perspective up in the broadcast gallery when VAR is used. A bit of background on the gallery first. It’s located at the back of the Main Stand at the tunnel end. If you look over you’ll see three rooms behind tinted glass. The room on the left houses our media team, consisting of: two social media reporters who post match updates on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram; a graphic designer to create score
graphics and other assets for social media and the big screen; a club journalist who writes the match report as the game is going on and a video editor who edits the highlights. In the middle is the gallery, which takes in footage from the host broadcaster and our own pitchside camera. There
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
is a director, a technician, a replay operator and club legend/ production manager Sir Terry Byfield. From here, different output is sent to the big screen, the lounges and the concourses. The replay operator will also send match clips into the cloud for the video editor to put into the highlights in the room next door.
Finally, to the right of the gallery is the room I’m based in along with PA announcer Mike Rankine and the two first-team analysts, who have their own match feed provided by Hawkeye. From there they radio down to the bench with anything they have noticed from their vantage point higher up. The two words all three rooms hear constantly throughout games are “check complete,” because coming out of a speaker in the gallery is the audio that the ref hears from the VAR team at Stockley Park. It’s important to note that we don’t hear anything the ref says but we do hear everything that VAR says. Although it may appear as if an incident hasn’t been checked because you don’t see or hear an
announcement on the big screen or through the PA system, they are constantly checking everything. It’s only when the check stops play that you’ll notice that it’s happening. At the last home game you probably saw the replay of PierreEmerick Aubameyang’s tackle on the big screen. This came through on the feed given to us by VAR. The policy is that whenever an on-field decision is overturned by VAR a replay will be shown. Mike was away at the last game so I was on PA and music duty. It was a panicky one after our goal because due to the deflection off David Luiz, I had to run next door and get the replay operator to show me what happened so I knew whose name to shout into the microphone. Was it Mr Jordan Ayew or Mr Own Goal?!
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
I then realised they were checking for offside too so decided to wait for “check complete” before announcing the scorer and playing the music. By the time I did it, play had restarted and it was all a bit odd. I then made the mistake of mentioning the goal music on Twitter. Turns out there are a lot of opinions on it. Thankfully Mike is back tonight so direct all your goal music ire in his direction!

In the league, Saints defender Jan Bednarek has made three errors that have led to goals this season.

MATCH PREVIEW Crystal Palace’s initial record against the Saints in the Premier League didn’t get off to the best of starts with the Eagles failing to win any of the first 12 meetings. In fact, Southampton have won 12 Premier League games against Crystal Palace, only recording more wins in the Premier League against Newcastle United (15), Aston Villa (13) and Tottenham Hotspur (13). Selhurst Park, historically, has been a happy hunting ground for the Saints – only at Villa Park have Saints won more Premier League games (6) than the five wins in SE25. However, the Eagles have never lost three consecutive home top-flight games against Saints.
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
Having won their last match in the capital city at Chelsea in December, Southampton are looking to win consecutive Premier League matches in London for the first time since February 2015. Roy Hodgson has won two of his eight Premier League games against Southampton as manager – drawing twice. Hodgson’s wins came with Palace in January 2018 - James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic turning things around after Shane Long's opener - and Blackburn Rovers in October 1997. Ralph Hasenhüttl has faced Crystal Palace twice in the Premier League with Southampton, with both matches finishing 1-1.
21.01.2019
Danny Ings has hit double figures in the Premier League for the first time since the 2014/15 season with Burnley.

ORCHESTRATOR: PIERRE-EMILE HØJBJERG 40
Club captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is crucial to Southampton in the middle of the park in terms of disrupting play and winning back possession. Højbjerg has made 53 tackles in the Premier League this season, the second-most for the Saints – just one less than his central midfield partner, James Ward-Prowse. However, no one has been dribbled past more than Højbjerg, which suggests a potential rashness to the timing of the midfielder’s challenges and this is something Palace could look to capitalise on. Across the majority of
defensive-minded statistics, Højbjerg comes up trumps for the Saints. Only Jan Bednarek has made more interceptions, nobody has won more fouls than Højbjerg and his 36 clearances are the most for the Saints outside the expected table-topping defenders. HØJBJERG IN THE PL THIS SEASON Statistic

The Moroccan international isn’t a guaranteed starter under Ralph Hasenhüttl however Boufal did start against Palace in the game back in December. If the Saints again opt to bring in Boufal, then Palace will get a glimpse into what it is like for the opposition to deal with Wilfried Zaha. DANGERMAN DANNY INGS Danny Ings is already enjoying his best-ever season in front of goal in the Premier League, bettering his 11 for Burnley in the 2014/15 campaign. Interestingly, despite carrying the goalscoring-burden for the Saints (James WardProwse is second with four) Ings has only completed 90 minutes in four of his last 10 Premier League games. If Palace are to keep Ings quiet for however long he is on the Selhurst Park pitch, then the centre-back pairing will need to keep tight to the former Liverpool frontman. Of Ings’ 57

in the Southampton squad. With highest amount of shots taken – excluding players who have played a minimum of 1,500 minutes – Boufal’s 15 attempts on goal have seen over 50% of them come from outside the box. BOUFAL

HISTORY For me, Goodison Park is one of the great traditional English football grounds. Every fan should pay a visit – maybe sooner rather than later as they are looking to move to a new stadium by the docks. It has hosted more top-flight games than any other ground in the country as the Toffees have played there since 1892 and have only spent four seasons in the ‘old’ Second Division. Our first game at Goodison Park was an FA Cup replay on March 13th 1907, played four days after we drew at home. We lost 4-0. With Everton having not been relegated since 1951, it’s no surprise that we didn’t get to play our first league game against them until we reached Division One in 1969, when we lost 2-1 to a team that included Alan Ball, Joe Royle,
Colin Harvey and Brian Labone - key players in a great Everton team that went on to win the league that season by nine points. It took until 1992 for us to win our first game there. A 2-0 victory with both goals scored by striker Chris Armstrong. MEMORABLE MATCHES 2014 was a great year for Palace fans visiting Everton with us scoring six goals there in the space of five months. In April we won 3-2 with goals from Jason Puncheon, Scott Dann and Cameron Jerome and we were back there again in the September for another 3-2 victory thanks to a Mile Jedinak penalty and one each from Fraizer Campbell and Yannick Bolasie. TRAVEL With a distance of nearly 250 miles

to cover, you’ll have to allow five hours to get there by car, so it’s going to be an early start. It involves a succession of motorways with the M40, M42, M6 Toll, M6 and M62 your best route. If you’re going by coach, be prepared for a 5am departure from Selhurst Park. Ouch. With the demise of Virgin Trains, the west coast route from Euston is now served by Avanti. The direct trains do the trip in a pretty speedy two hours 15 minutes. The 09.07 should do it, but not with much time to spare! PUBS AND BEER Liverpool is an historic old city and there is a great choice of classic old pubs – many of which are just a short walk from Lime Street station. have yet to try. Merseyside boasts another 20 or so small brewers with Flagship’s Sublime session pale ale one of my favourites. A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Recently the Eagles and Toffees pathway has been a well-trodden path: Alan Irvine, Yannick Bolasie and now James McCarthy and Cenk Tosun to name just four. However, this week I thought that I would play a wildcard and choose an architect! Archibald Leitch was a Scotsman who got into designing football stadiums when he was commissioned to build Ibrox Park in 1899. His first project in England was at Bramall Lane in Sheffield and he became known as the leading stadium architect of his day. Much of his work has now been demolished, but the Bullens Road and Gwladys Street stands at Goodison Park still survive – as does his main stand at Selhurst Park. FAMOUS FANS Jodie Comer of Killing Eve is an Everton fan and her dad works at the club as a masseur. Liverpool legends Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Carragher all – apparently - were Blues as boys. Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright is a lifelong fan and was once an actor in Coronation Street, playing the son of Betty, the legendary barmaid at The Rovers Return Inn.

several good pubs on this street which runs from near the entrance to the Birkenhead tunnel down to the river by the Liver Building, the Beatles Statue and the ferries (across the Mersey). For a fabulous choice of real ales, the best of these is the Ship and Mitre which is always popular with Palace fans. They always feature an excellent range of beers here from local independent breweries and have around 15 handpumps. With the early kick-off this is probably best visited after the game and it’s then just a few hundred yards back to the station. Liverpool’s Higson’s Brewery was established in 1780 but closed down in 1990 following its purchase by Whitbread. The brand name has recently been revived by a micro-brewery whose beers I

At the very heart of south London, Croydon’s urban art scene has exploded in recent years. And the person behind that growth is Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison. Kevin’s impact within Croydon has led to international recognition for his KZM Projects gallery, with Kevin receiving commissions for his artists from as far as the streets of Lebanon and Italy. During his chat with the Palace programme, Kevin spoke passionately about his career and what he has achieved at his recently rebranded company, which switched from RISE Gallery after its formation six months ago to KZM Projects. The name change represents the need for a new image to fully support Kevin’s desire to move away from the classic galleries of worldfamous artists such as Andy Warhol
to purely focusing on public artwork. “What I do is use the power of art to engage and inspire communities,” he said. “I knew that art could inspire my community. I remember reading a case study Melbourne Lane Ways which looked at a bad area in Melbourne, called The Lanes, which had a lot of violence there. However, the authorities started to invite local artists to just come there and paint, and that changed the feeling of the place, gave it more of an identity and the community started to build around that.” Art can be a real catalyst for change, with Kevin remarking on how the opinion on street art has changed from viewing graffiti as an act of anti-social behaviour to something far more positive. “Graffiti was really seen
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
as a negative thing a few years ago but now it has evolved so much. We get artwork that today looks like Renaissance paintings on the side of walls.” KZM Projects’ operation is so popular now that Kevin’s work calendar represents something like the football fixture list around the Christmas period. “KZM Projects are inundated with requests from people who want to commission artwork or offer up their buildings for us to work on. We are always on the lookout for new buildings and welcome all areas, walls and spaces.” But how does it work? Kevin explained that KZM Projects mainly work with career artists, especially on their larger scale projects where you’d need to have a certain level of experience

to tackle buildings that are up to 40 metres high. However, for smaller commissions Kevin looks to open the door to emerging artists, to give them a platform. “Artists come to us, and over the years we’ve built up a really good network of people we work with. However, we are always open to working with new artists, ones that are changing the scene.” There aren’t many professions where you can go out and about on the weekend and view your work or overhear critiques of your work from passers-by, unbeknown to them that the man standing just a few feet away helped bring the street art to life: “It’s really cool going round and seeing all the work, and I love hearing people remarking on the work as I pass by, without them realising I was involved with getting the artwork live. It still happens now with artwork we did a few years back, it is still having an impact. “The one we did next to East Croydon station is the one that stands out for me – it is called The Child’s Thinker by an artist called RUN. I like the concept behind it: giants who roamed the Earth long before human existence “Croydon is internationally renowned for its street and urban art, and I believe we are 100% the driving force behind that.” You can check out Kevin’s work over at his website: www.KZMstudio.co.uk

Ian Wright had hobbled off during the second-half of a home defeat to Liverpool in mid-January wincing in agony. The x-rays conducted over the ensuing few days confirmed the worst: Crystal Palace’s leading scorer had fractured his shin. The SOS went out from management to board for recruits, but money was tight. There was no sense that the team would be rescued in the transfer market any time soon, leaving Steve Coppell contemplating how he could eke goals from a team who, aside from a solitary reward after a frantic pinball in the Arsenal six-yard box, had failed to score a league goal since the turn of the year. The answer came from within the ranks. John Salako, a substitute against Liverpool who had rammed a shot against the post from 30 yards late on, had started the season on loan at Swansea City in the third tier. He had scored three times in 13 matches before returning to his parent club, though the youth team graduate, usually deployed out on the flank, had still been considered far too raw to start at this level.
“He was a nightmare sometimes, shooting and not crossing, so Brighty and I would have a right go at him,” recalled Wright. “The pair of them were both world-class moaners,” said Gary O’Reilly. “They used to rip Salako to shreds because he would turn in, turn out, stand on it, fall over, get up, go for an ice cream and come back, and they’d still be waiting for the cross. You can imagine the conversation.” But Salako proved thick-skinned, and Coppell considered his pace an asset. The seeds were sown in a comfortable FA Cup Fourth Round 4-0 win over Huddersfield. The youngster rounded off the scoring that day and retained his place at Nottingham Forest the following week. That occasion was instantly forgettable, with the visitors’ porous defence inviting disaster, but it had been Salako who waltzed on to Geoff Thomas’ fine pass to ram home a consolation late on. And so to the visit of Southampton to Selhurst Park. Palace had lost four on the bounce in the league and were drifting back towards the relegation
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
places. They would creak through the opening exchanges against the Saints, a free-scoring team who had scored four in a victory over Charlton at Selhurst Park six weeks before. Matt le Tissier, Paul Rideout, Rodney Wallace and a young Alan Shearer represented an imposing forward line. Then, with parity preserved, Nigel Martyn gathered from John Pemberton and, as the locals breathed a sigh of relief in possession, launched the ball up-field. The punt was guided on expertly by a leaping Bright, who had edged away from Neil Ruddock, into an area between Russell Osman and Francis Benali. There charged Salako to dispatch another crisp finish low and across Tim Flowers to force the hosts ahead. Palace had stumbled upon a partner for Bright, the former trainee seizing his chance with gusto. He would strike the woodwork again before the end, though only after Andy Gray and Phil Barber had swelled the hosts’ lead. The rot had been stopped. Salako would never look back.
53
The 2019/20 season marks 30 years on from the first year ‘back’ in the top-flight under Steve Coppell, and this week The Athletic writer Dom Fifield looks back at how Ian Wright’s injury handed John Salako the opportunity to shine.

A talented young player has signed for Crystal Palace’s Under-11s Academy side, after originally getting involved with the club at one of Palace for Life Foundation’s Soccer Schools that run during the school holidays for boys and girls aged 5-12. Starting out with Palace for Life’s Tier 1 Development Centre as a six-year-old, it took just six months for Harvey to be moved up to Tier 2 on the development pathway that Palace for Life offer. Here, Harvey stayed for two years, honing his skills and developing his all-round game, whilst also continuing to attend Palace for Life’s school holiday Soccer Schools, spending further valuable time with coaches to help improve his footballing ability. After two years in the Tier 2 centres, it was decided that Harvey’s talent warranted progression to Crystal Palace’s pre-
Academy. Again, Harvey excelled at this level and this culminated in him signing as a Crystal Palace player for the Under-11s. Sports Development Officer at Palace for Life Foundation, Stuart Jacob said: “I was delighted to see Harvey progress into the Crystal Palace Academy. His hard work and dedication is exemplary of the personal characteristics that we want to instil in all of the players coming through our Development Centres and taking part in our Soccer Schools. “Having been through our pathway, we are confident in not only his work ethic, but also his ability and grounding that he has as a footballer. We look forward to seeing him succeed with the club.” Harvey is just one of a number of children who have progressed from Palace for Life’s Soccer Schools into the Academy setup and Jamahl Jarrett, Assistant Head

of Academy Recruitment at Crystal Palace, said it was a great starting point for promising young players. “Over the years we’ve seen a large number of players from the Foundation similar to Harvey make the step into the Academy and sign. It’s a really important relationship for us in the Academy as it helps us provide a filter system when looking for the next best talent. Harvey has hit the ground running, he’s fitted right in with the boys and is definitely a talent we have high hopes for.” Palace for Life Foundation Soccer Schools are running throughout February half-term at venues in south London and Surrey. When Ollie Webber left Belfast for London barely 16-years-old, he was taking a huge step from the family life he enjoyed at home. More than three years later, he looks back on a seminal leap of faith and how it felt at the time.

“I didn’t know anyone and walked in on my own,” recalls Ollie Webber. “It was terrifying.” Webber was 16-years-and-aday old when he flew from Belfast to London to join Crystal Palace’s Academy and relocate to south London. He calls it “nerve-racking,” but, three years later, you wouldn’t have guessed Palace’s confident Under-23s goalkeeper could have seemed nervous. With the sort of self-assurance gleaned only by someone who’s had to grow up quickly on their own, Webber is eloquent and his distinctly English accent stands out clearly above the din and excitement of the Academy canteen at lunchtime. Born in Portsmouth but growing up with his mother, brother and halfsister in Northern Ireland, Webber retained his south coast inflection despite spending half a decade in his mother’s home country. On his first visit to London for a trial with Palace’s Academy, Webber was overwhelmed by the scale of the capital: “I’d never been to London before,” he says after lunch. “It was a big city and a bit nerve-wracking. I settled in quite quickly. When I first came over I was nervous being in a big city on my own because I’d never experienced it. “But I was lucky enough to have had trials at other places so it’s not like it was my first ever trial. I knew what I was experiencing but it was just nerve-racking being with boys

that don’t know you, and you don’t know them. You don’t know how you’re going to play. Playing against an Academy team, the standard is way better than what it is in Ireland. I loved every minute of it.” Settling Webber in as the then-16-year-old grew accustomed to new teammates and a new environment was another newcomer from the far side of the Irish Sea. Under-18s manager Paddy McCarthy joined a few weeks after his ‘keeper did and drew upon his own experience of leaving home as a teenager for England. “Obviously Paddy’s experienced what I’ve experienced so there were a couple of times where I got homesick and got a weekend home. Paddy was perfect. The first six months I got homesick quite a bit and if we had a weekend off, he’d say: ‘Ollie, get a flight, go home, see the family.’ That helped me settle in and after six months, this was home. It was like I’d been here my whole life.” Now a more seasoned player with regular Under-23 appearances
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
to his name, Webber has also been building his international reputation. “I was 14 and got called up to go to a training camp with Northern Ireland Under-15s. Our first game was in Estonia. There were four or five ‘keepers and I was the youngest one there - I didn’t think I’d get selected. I got the email from the IFA saying ‘you’ve been selected’ and it was the best feeling in the world, the best thing I’ve ever done. I went there as No.2. You play teams twice and in the second game I played, we drew 0-0. It was a hell of an experience.” A regular with Northern Ireland’s respective youth teams, now Webber is again one of the youngest in his age group as a 19-year-old in the Under-21s, but he’s hoping to keep pushing on. “To try and break in to Northern Ireland Under-21s, I’d love to do that. The Under-21s or senior team, that would be the pinnacle of my career.” For the 16-year-old who flew to London and set himself up in a Premier League Academy alone, we wouldn’t bet against him.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King
EAGLES RAMPANT Southampton had dropped out of the top-flight in 2005 and were constantly surrounded in rumours of a takeover. Furthermore, the Saints went on to lose the 2006 play-off final against Derby County. Against this backdrop of turmoil, Palace were excited at the
prospect of opening their 2007/08 campaign against the Saints. Despite off-the-pitch struggles it was Southampton who were on the front foot for the opening 30 minutes of Palace’s visit to the south coast. However, against the run of play Palace won a corner. Stuart Green swung the ball in and found an unmarked James Scowcroft who headed it past the ‘keeper and into the net. Palace were reinvigorated and less than a minute later a long ball from Mark Kennedy landed at Scowcroft’s feet and the striker coolly lobbed the ball over the stranded Bartosz Bialkowski. The Saints did reduce the arrears just before the break but 10 minutes into the second-half ‘Scowie’ completed his hat-trick when Bialkowski was again at fault as he dropped a long clearance onto Scowcroft’s head leaving the striker a simple task of putting the ball in the net. Two minutes later Clinton Morrison edged nearer the 100goal mark for Palace, when he
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
volleyed home. Shefki Kuqi nearly capped off an already excellent away day for Peter Taylor’s charges in style when he spotted the ‘keeper off his line and went close to the Eagles’ fifth goal with a fine long-range effort. SCOWCROFT’S VIEW Scowcroft’s last hat-trick had been with Ipswich Town some nine years previously when, coincidentally, George Burley was boss of the Tractor Boys as he was for Southampton for the opening day game in 2007. Interviewed for the next Palace programme after the Saints game, Scowcroft said: “I never set myself (goal) targets because you never know what’s going to happen in football…and I’m experienced enough to know that while it has been a fantastic day, next week might be totally different.” James had joined Palace from Coventry City in July 2006 and left Palace in the summer of 2009 after scoring 14 goals in 85 league and cup appearances.

PALACE’S PRE-SEASON In July two new players arrived - defenders Tony Craig and Jeff Hughes - and this coincided with the Eagles having a very strong pre-season: unbeaten in nine games. The fixtures started with five non-league opponents and were then followed by two in Sweden against Gothenburg and Oddevold. Returning to England, Palace then faced Anderlecht in a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park - the highlight of which was the appearance off the bench of 16-year-old Victor Moses and the debut of José Fonte who had agreed a 12-month loan from Benfica. Then on Saturday 4th August came the last friendly at home to Everton, a game that saw Andy Johnson make his first return to SE25.

PADDY McCARTHY
We knew it was going to be a tough test against Wolves, who are a Cat One team, but we felt confident in our preparation and the players’ ability. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, we were unable to perform to the levels that we know we are capable of and turned in a disappointing performance. This would’ve been the first time for a few of the lads that they’ve been left out of a lineup or squad for a big game. It’s good for their development to go through this, as they’re looking to have long careers in the game and this will invariably happen again. There were a couple of selections in the starting XI that were difficult to make, and the coaching staff and myself discussed our options at length. John-Kymani Gordon is an example of this. The impact he had made when he came on, not just the goal, but his all-round play was superb. He was extremely unlucky not to have started the game but how
he reacted when he got his chance showed a pleasing level of maturity. Post-match, I really didn’t have to say much to the team. The sense of disappointment was obvious but not necessarily because of the result, but because of the performance. If we’d been knocked out by a bit of luck for Wolves or a bad decision then we could’ve accepted that. Overall, we just didn’t play to the high standards we set ourselves and are capable of. Despite the poor collective display, I must mention Jacob Russell who was fantastic in goal, particularly in the first-half when he pulled off several superb saves to keep us in the game. Like all positions throughout the squad, Jacob faces stiff competition for his spot despite being our regular ‘keeper. There are two goalkeepers in the Under-16s, Owen Goodman and Joe Whitworth, who have both been around international setups and are
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
pushing Jacob for that No.1 spot in the Under-18s. The exposure the club media gave the Fourth Round tie was great to see. It’s so important for us to - as close as we possibly can - expose our younger age groups to what it would be like if they were to be involved in a first-team matchday. With post-match media duties, playing at Molineux in front of a paying crowd and knowing that the game was being broadcast live for free on Palace TV will have only added to the important learnings the whole squad have picked up. It will be important now to see how the group reacts in our next game, which is on Saturday at home to Millwall – they’re flying high at the top of the table. It will be a tough derby game but I believe that every game, if this group of players perform to their capabilities, are more than a match for anybody.
71
I’m penning these notes the day after our FA Youth Cup exit away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was a disappointing night for the team but as always at this level, there are plenty of learnings for the squad to take and build upon.

I’ve worked hard since I’ve been here and I feel like I still have more to show. Playing in the Championship with Palace gives me a great platform to improve my game and I can hopefully help the team push forward in achieving our goals. This is a great squad to be part of and it has been great to link up with a few former teammates from my previous clubs. I love the ethos of the club and what Dean Davenport and the coaching staff have implemented, it’s a setup that I feel compliments my style of play: a defensive midfielder who looks to break up attacks and recycle possession. I tend to play with Andria Georgiou and Ashleigh Goddard in the middle of the park, with one or both positioned ahead of me. I have played with them both previously so I knew how they
like to play which was a great benefit. The three of us get on really well off the pitch too which helped me hit the ground running in south London. I actually grew up playing with Dre in midfield at Academy level for a number of years and we both had the same roles that we do now, so it’s great to be back playing with her - I think we really complement each other well. We had our first game back after the Christmas break against Coventry United. Having drew 0-0 in the opening game of the season, it was hugely disappointing not to come away with anything. Despite the 3-2 defeat, I feel like we dominated a lot of the game and had the majority of possession. It was our own errors that cost us the three points. However, there are a lot of positives to take from the game
CRYSTAL PALACE v SOUTHAMPTON
in terms of our style of play. We will have played Leicester City by the time you’re reading this but due to deadlines this column went to print before the game took place. However, I’m hoping we can now reflect back on a positive result from Sunday and have put some distance between ourselves from the group of teams that will have the same target as us: to finish as high as possible. Next up for the squad is this weekend’s game away at Southampton in the SSE Women’s FA Cup, a competition we are looking to go far in and make a name for ourselves amongst the best teams in England. However, despite being three leagues below us, the trip to the south coast on Sunday won’t be easy so we will need to be focussed to ensure we come away with a win and a good performance.
73
I arrived at Palace in September but I’ve settled in quickly here so I was delighted when the club approached me about extending my contract.
