ROY HODGSON

We are well and truly into the thick of the season’s most demanding period of football, and we have been dealt a challenging hand by a twist of fate that has seen us face the blow of having three players in the same position ruled out through injury. Excluding Andros Townsend, all of our recent injuries have affected the defence where we had been so thoroughly well-stocked previously. Today, Mamadou Sakho is back from suspension and I am hoping we will have been boosted by Patrick van Aanholt returning to the team. However, for the second time in a highly congested run of fixtures, I have had to submit my notes for this page well in advance of the game. I therefore cannot comment about last Saturday’s match with Newcastle United. Every football follower will be aware of – and no doubt enjoys – the demand of the festive schedule, which throws up situations such as these. What is often overlooked is the physical intensity which players must endure with these top-flight, elite performances and the impact this can have on them. This season, we have been fortunate to play at home and

so the team and I have been able to spend some time with our families before today. West Ham will have been less fortunate and no doubt spent their Christmas evening in a Croydon hotel! It has been particularly pleasing to see members of our squad spend what limited time they have this month using their privileged position as footballers to benefit less fortunate people in society. I have seen the team visit local hospitals recently and make deliveries to nearby food banks. They have also delighted young fans by paying visits to Christmas parties hosted by the club. Their presence at the one organised for our children with disabilities was particularly appreciated where, once again, the president, Bill Nighy, gave up his time to mingle with the children and pose for photographs. Palace players are aware of the good fortune that they have enjoyed, albeit through years of hard work, and I am proud to see them ‘give something back’ to the community. Behind closed doors and away from the cameras at Christmas, I can say with confidence that the squad continue

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

to impact the world positively and entirely of their own volition. Our last match here at Selhurst Park delivered a very pleasing point earned through the grit and determination for what this club is known. We showed great character and could hold our heads high after pulling level in difficult circumstances to record the draw which for long periods seemed to be beyond our reach. The game was played and supported in the right manner as commitment mixed with respect and I am looking forward to more of the same this afternoon in another London derby. West Ham United always provide a stern test both home and away and we had to fight until the final whistle to get our win earlier this season. With the Palace supporters behind us today, I am hoping we can replicate that commendable display. Finally, New Year’s Eve will have passed before I write my next programme notes so I will end these ones by wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year. Looking forward to seeing you all here again in the next decade! Enjoy the game.

05

Good afternoon to everyone here from West Ham United today and welcome to each and every one of you from Crystal Palace. I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas.

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC

For us as a club, 2019 was a very successful year. Last season we finished in the middle of the Premier League table which was a good and fair position. This season, we are improving and at the moment we are not far off number five in the table. We are in a place where we can push on and do something special. We will maybe make a few additions in the new year and make 2020 even better than 2019. I was asked by a fan about my favourite goal of 2019, but for me, every goal is dependent on the team and everyone’s roles in the build-up. I am happy I could score a lot of goals from my position this year. As always, I am hoping to continue to do this for the team and to help us in any way I can in achieving our aims. We will have plenty to talk about next time I speak to you at Derby County because the media

team needed my words for today’s game before the 90 minutes against Newcastle United. But looking at our rivalry last week and I have to credit Brighton. I don’t recall many teams coming to our home of Selhurst and outplaying us for 60 minutes. They were good. Tactically in the first-half we didn’t play how we wanted to and they surprised us. We worked hard to keep ourselves in the game, so we could take our chance when it came. Overall, we can be honest and say we did not play how we hoped, but we took a point and in the end maybe we should’ve taken three points. After the whole 90 minutes though, I can say it feels like a big point. We had two players from our Academy on the bench against Brighton: Tyrick and Sam. It highlights just how many players we were – and still are – missing, and they’re important players for us

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

who have played most of the time. Those long-term injuries meant that Macca had to play at left-back for the second-half with Jaïro unable to continue due to injury. Macca has such a great mentality, wherever the coach put him he is ready to sacrifice himself for the team. It is very important to have these sort of players in the squad, and he tried to do his best to help us despite not playing in his normal position. Today’s game we play West Ham in a 90 minutes I expect to be even, much like our away trip to their home earlier in the season. They like to have possession and also like to counter-attack, which is quite similar to us. We have the advantage today though because we are at home, we have our passionate fans and I believe the three points are there for us. Make some noise!

07

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Day with your loved ones. Today is Boxing Day, a wonderful moment in the year, and I hope a final present for you is a win today.

STEVE PARISH

Due to print deadlines, I am writing this shortly after the draw with Brighton, and just before our trip to Newcastle. Considering the circumstances and recent spate of injuries, I thought the result against an impressive Brighton side was a good one. We were on the back foot for large parts of the game, but this team is characterised by it’s never-say-die attitude, and in the last 20 minutes, we were probably the side closest to winning it. Wilf scored with an absolute rocket and rightly took the plaudits, but I would like to single out James McArthur who slotted in very capably at left-back, following Jaïro’s knock. As Scott said in the Palace TV interview after the game, James does everything that is asked of him – you could put him anywhere, and he’d put in 100% and not look out of place. It was also pleasing to see Christian back

in the starting lineup and creating chances, and Max making an impact late on as a substitute. After today’s game, we will be at the halfway point of the season. Regardless of the Newcastle and West Ham results, I think we should look back on the first half of the season, and indeed 2019, with positivity. Given the competitiveness of this league, it’s inevitable that there will be highs and lows, but I think on the whole we should be happy with our returns. As this is the last home game of the year, I’d like to thank you all for your immense support here at Selhurst Park, and on the road too. The atmosphere you create home and away continues to create positive media and public comment when we’re selected for TV games, and it is always talked about amongst the players. Long may it continue.

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

Next year will be a huge one for the club – of that I’m sure. For me personally, next summer marks my 10th anniversary as Chairman, and I’m more motivated than ever to further establish ourselves as a top-half Premier League club. I continue to be energised by the positive impact we have on our community, particularly through the excellent work of the Palace for Life Foundation. Crucial to our future success is our ambition to become a Category 1 Academy, and we are eagerly awaiting news of our planning application that is being reviewed by Bromley Council. Right across the club, there is lots to be done! Thank you once again for your incredible support in 2019, and I’d like to wish each and every one of you the very best for the year ahead. Enjoy the game. Up the Palace.

09

Welcome to the supporters, staff, players and directors of West Ham United to Selhurst Park for this Boxing Day match, and welcome back to each and every Palace supporter. I do hope you had an enjoyable Christmas Day.

What a decade it has been for the Eagles: saved from administration to now being a firmly established Premier League club, looking up the table rather than down. No player has featured more for Palace during the last 10 years than Wilfried Zaha, and here he sits down with Dan Blazer to look back on that journey.

26.12.2019

12 CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

Across cpfc.co.uk and our social media channels fans have been voting in their thousands for their ‘Moment of the Decade’ – the results will be announced in the coming days and, who knows, there might even be another addition to the list come full-time today. But what stands out in all those magical memories is that the majority of the club’s iconic games, moments and goals feature Wilfried Zaha. Last week’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion was Zaha’s 341st professional appearance for Crystal Palace this decade. After a brief spell away from Selhurst Park at Manchester United and Cardiff City, Zaha returned permanently in 2015 to continue his Eagles legacy. Here, we sit down with him to relive those moments and to hear his first-hand account of them, which inadvertently map out the winger’s growth from a raw, exciting talent to the world-class player we have in SE25 today. We begin with taking 27-yearold Zaha back to 30th November 2011, when, just 20 days after his 19th birthday, he was instrumental in Palace overcoming Manchester United at Old Trafford in the League Cup quarter-final. He begins: “That was definitely one of my most memorable nights football-wise. For us to pull-off

what we did meant it was a special night, and that’s when the world took notice of me. “My phone absolutely blew up that night. As soon as I got back to the changing room at full-time, honestly, my phone was going crazy. So many messages were coming in. That had never happened before and I remember just sitting there and thinking: ‘Wow!’

“ FINE. FAIR ENOUGH. YOU WANT TO GIVE US STICK. THEN I’M JUST GOING TO DO WHAT I KNOW I CAN DO ” “I actually met up with Darren [Ambrose] recently as we did a thing for Palace TV and discussed that night. What a player he was – he just didn’t stop scoring screamers – and he is such a nice guy.” Today’s programme interview actually took place just hours after Zaha had silenced Brighton yet again in last week’s game. And it

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

seems that we are never more than one or two moments away from the Seagulls cropping up. Our next moment on the list is the Brighton moment back in 2013: the play-off semi-final second leg. Zaha starts: “That was a massive game. Wow. We had lost Glenn Murray in the first leg, and that was a blow because he was scoring most of the goals that season, so going over there [Amex Stadium] had us thinking: ‘What are we going to do?!’ “We managed to create a few chances. And that ball Yannick [Bolasie] put in for my first goal was one I knew he was going to do as he’d been doing it loads that season in games and training, and I got my head to it. “Because I don’t score many headers that is one people really remember but my second that night ranks highly. In recent times, I’ve been practicing shooting with my left foot, but back then I’d say nine out of 10 times I wouldn’t even hit the target with my left. Therefore, managing to spin and hitting it on target - with power - was so pleasing, man. “I remember getting so much stick before the play-off games. And I was just thinking: ‘why are you being like this? I’ve never done anything to Brighton.’ But I thought: ‘Fine. Fair enough. You want to give us stick. Then I’m just going to do what I know I can do in this massive game.”

Conversation drifts to the latest night against Brighton: the goal Zaha slapped in against Graham Potter’s side: “Practice makes…well it doesn’t make perfect but it makes consistency. And I’m delighted I managed to do it against them again because I know for a fact that the ‘talking’ would’ve been never ending if they had won on Monday.” Talk of Brighton will return, but the next chronological moment arrives in the form of the game that fell two weeks later: Wembley. Watford. Play-off final. Over to Zaha: “We dominated that game. I remember getting on the ball a lot and we made a lot of chances. But the defining moment was the penalty. There are a few things you can do as a player when you just know a defender has no choice but to dangle their leg out. “Against Watford, when I’d taken on the full-back, I put the ball in a space between us, but at a 70/30 chance that I’ll get to the ball before him. However, because it’s between both of us I knew he’d have to put his leg out. “I also knew that Kevin Phillips would score the penalty. Because Kevin Phillips is Kevin Phillips and I’m glad he was the one to take it. “That was my first game at Wembley. The whole excitement was just crazy. To win there was unreal.”

Watford have no need to feel aggrieved - after all, Zaha is a regular spoiler of parties for opponents, and on the 16th May 2015, Steven Gerrard’s Anfield farewell was the next to fall to our wing wizard. But as Zaha recalls, it didn’t look like that would be the case to begin with: “That game, the way it started was just like: ‘Oh my God. It is going to be one of those days.’ They started on fire, scored their goal but I then remember thinking we can’t just come here and be victims basically. “The fight back started from Punch’s free-kick. That gave us belief and we started thinking: ‘We aren’t here to make up the numbers and be the team that Liverpool beat easily in Gerrard’s final game.’ And our confidence just grew and grew and we took over.” From dominating Anfield to storming Stamford Bridge on the 1st April 2017, Zaha recollects a match that had a similar beginning to the Liverpool game, with Chelsea 1-0 up inside five-minutes. Six-minutes later Palace would be 2-1 up: “This start came out of nowhere. The way they started was ridiculous; they were up for it. When a team starts like that you do worry that you could be two or three down within the first 20-minutes. “After Cesc Fàbregas scored that goal we started telling

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

ourselves - well, not in words but you could just see it - ‘we need to fight back.’ We were clinical with the opportunities we got and we defended for our lives. We fought for everything that game and for me that was just what Palace do, and what we’ve always done – a team with a lot of character and you can’t count us out.” Brighton. Again. It’s doubtful that Zaha received too many Christmas cards from the south coast yesterday. This time we relive the crazy first-half at Selhurst Park back in April of last year that saw five goals fly in. The game would end 3-2 in Palace’s favour – and Zaha bagged another brace. Our Ivory Coast international just can’t help himself. Laughing, he says: “It’s always great to score against Brighton because of the rivalry and them having so much mouth. Being able to shut them up then felt good with my two goals.” Again, despite reviewing this game, Zaha drifts into personal reflection. “I used to listen to the abuse before but now I just try and blank it all out. I know Brighton is always a massive game but I just fixate on what I am going to do every time I get the ball.” The next stop on the trip down memory lane isn’t an individual Zaha moment. But his role – and the whole team’s - on the day that

15

26.12.2019

16 CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

Andros Townsend smacked in his Puskas Award contender against Manchester City is not forgotten. Zaha was deployed upfront for that 90-minutes, and he reveals it wasn’t the ideal circumstances for him: “That was a tough day for me to be honest. But you know when you have to put a shift in for the team, then you just do it. I was just running through blind alleys, chasing lost causes. “But Andros’ goal. Wow. When the ball goes out to him, I wasn’t surprised. That’s the thing, Andros just tends to do that: shoot from crazy places. I had a feeling he would shoot but I was thinking: ‘please just bring it down and let’s start again!’ When I saw it go top corner, I thought this is the craziest goal I have ever seen. It was unreal.” Roy Hodgson’s Palace have built up a reputation as a side who can conquer the biggest teams in England, in their own backyards, and last season, finally, the Emirates Stadium fell to the Eagles too. When discussing that clash with Unai Emery’s side, Zaha gives an interesting insight into his and Christian Benteke’s relationship: “That was a massive game. I now feel like we go in to games knowing we have enough to hurt other teams and don’t need to defend and we went to the Emirates with that mindset.

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

“We applied what the gaffer wanted us to do: get it up top to Chris. And I tried to do what I do best and get on the end of his headers, and that’s what led to my goal. Chris literally knows where I am! We have such a good relationship. He will divert his headers to wherever I may be. “He managed to put it in the area I’m going, and Mustafi is trying to block me off even though the ‘keeper isn’t even coming for it! So, I just took that second when I saw Leno wasn’t coming to shrug him off, compose myself and score my goal.” You don’t always get the impression that a footballer has enjoyed an interview – the same humdrum would be tedious for anyone – but there’s a sparkle in Zaha’s eyes when going through these iconic moments of the past decade. It’s a journey he’s enjoyed and one that is very much still going: “On the pitch, my end product has improved greatly and I’m always continuing to try and be more consistent in terms of goals and assists. “But as a person, I’ve matured since 2010. I’m keeping my temperament more now. That’s slowly changing. Obviously, I’m still working on this. It’s not easy but having my son has made a massive difference to my life.” Thanks for the last decade, Wilf.

EAGLE EYE WITH PALACE TV'S CHRIS GRIERSON

24

It’s 'Moments of the Decade' season in the online content world so I thought I may as well get in on the act and write the article you never knew you wanted to read: Chris Grierson’s favourite moments of the half-decade he’s been at Palace. One highlight involves yoghurt. A lot of yoghurt. The scene is Cincinnati. It's the matchday of our pre-season friendly against FC Cincinnati. We had an amazing welcome from the people of the city. Over 30,000 fans are at the game. One of the most incredible fireworks displays I’ve ever seen was put on for us after full-time. Burt, our hotel manager, changed his wedding anniversary plans because he was desperate to hang around with Palace fans at the pub before kick-off. It’s a day that should be remembered

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

for all those incredible things. But instead, all I can remember is spending the whole day wondering where the smell of decomposing feet was coming from. The smell was only there when I was with our videographer Hamez (real name James but we made him exotic). But I wasn’t brave enough to ask him why he smells so bad. It was getting worse as the day went on, too. I was getting nervous about allowing him to go near Alan Pardew as I knew he had a keen sense of smell. He’d once popped into our office when a member of staff was particularly whiffy and declared “Blimey, it smells of horse in here!” And he was right. It did. I could sense everybody in the room was thinking: “Yes! Horse! I’d been struggling to describe that smell for months but Mr Pardew has hit the nail on the horseshoe!” Luckily, he didn’t notice the mouldy cheese scent during the post-match interview. But when it came to editing those videos, Hamez was nowhere to be seen. He wasn’t answering his phone - not unusual for a guy who forgot to come to his own leaving drinks, but concerning nonetheless. We actually thought he’d died the day before when we realised the bundle of training kit lying by the pitch in 36 degrees of sunshine was actually him taking a mid-afternoon nap.

Perhaps he had delayed sunstroke and had collapsed in a stairwell somewhere? I was worried. So worried that I decided to have a snack, check my socials and then go to the toilet before I started to search for him. I didn’t have to search for long. I heard a rustling round the corner in the ‘restroom’ as our American chums call it. There covered in toilet paper and yoghurt and with a sheepish look on his face was Hamez. It turns out he’d nicked a yoghurt from breakfast and put it in his rucksack for later. Unfortunately, the yoghurt had exploded fairly early in the day and had been cooking in the aforementioned 36 degrees of heat all day, emitting death smells wherever he went as he never takes his bag off his back - he once went a whole day at his desk without removing his bag.

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

The yoghurt was all over one of our very expensive camera lenses and he’d been in the toilet trying to remove the evidence before I saw it. Unfortunately for him he couldn’t get it all off. Some still remains on it to this day as an everlasting reminder of the time I intended to write an article about my favourite moments in this job and ended up writing over 500 words about spilt, fermented milk.

STAT 36

Mark Noble has played 14 games against the Eagles, scoring twice and winning just five.

FROM THE DUGOUT

“WE'VE PLAYED THREE OF OUR LAST FIVE GAMES AWAY - AT CHELSEA, WOLVERHAMPTON AND NOW SOUTHAMPTON, SO I THINK SIX POINTS FROM THOSE [AWAY] GAMES IS OKAY."

MATCH PREVIEW When Palace went to the London Stadium in October and won, it was just their second win in 11 games against the Hammers. If Roy Hodgson’s side manage to continue their winning run against Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit it will mean West Ham will have lost both Premier League games in a season against Palace for the first time since 2013/14. In one of football’s strange quirks, Palace might do well in not opening the scoring today, seeing as the team that has scored first in the last five league meetings between the two sides has never won. West Ham have tended to enjoy their visits to south London though, taking a minimum of a point in their last five trips in the league. However, Hodgson has lost just once in his last eight meetings in the dugout against

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

today’s visitors from east London. Likewise, though, former Manchester City boss Pellegrini has won six of his nine league encounters with the Eagles – only against Newcastle (7) and Southampton (7) has he won more. We could be in for a high-scoring game today with 11 of the current Crystal Palace squad having netted against West Ham - no players scoring more than Gary Cahill and Jordan Ayew. Furthermore, Wilfried Zaha has scored in his last two Premier League appearances against West Ham at Selhurst Park. But the Hammers do have their own weapon in their armoury with Manuel Lanzini having found the net in each of his first four Premier League appearances against Crystal Palace, although he’s failed to score in his last two.

AMATEUR ANALYSIS PALACE V WEST HAM

ORCHESTRATOR: PABLO FORNALS 40

Fornals arrived in east London from Villarreal with a heavy weight of expectation on his shoulders. Signing a five-year contract as the Hammers’ second-most expensive acquisition, the Spain international scored his first goal since signing against Newport County in the League Cup. But it is not until recently that Fornals’ ability has truly come to the fore, with the 23-year-old claiming three assists in his last four games. Two of these assists can be directly attributed to victories – as Fornals provided in 1-0 wins over Chelsea and Southampton respectively.

His form has seen him play in all but eight minutes of West Ham’s last four matches, and his inclusion pays clear dividends. Playing the majority of his games on the left of West Ham’s midfield, Fornals’ calibre has lopsided the Hammers’ attacking focus, with 42% of pushes coming from the left-wing compared with just 35% on the right. Away from home, where West Ham have enjoyed their recent wins, attacks come even less frequently from the right, pulling either into the centre of the park or along Fornals’ favoured left. Declan Rice has become well known for his defensive solidity despite being just 20-years-old. The England international occupies the space in front of West Ham’s back four – with the Hammers typically fielding a 4-1-4-1 or 4-4-1-1. Rice’s dropping back to provide a rear-guard is particularly noticeable when the east Londoners attack: the No.41 protects the backline to allow more offensive players such as Felipe Anderson,

A SWITCH IN FORMATION Under pressure for an upturn in results, West Ham have switched their playing style over recent matches and, after a shaky start, the move seems to be taking effect. Going from 4-1-4-1 as mentioned above with Rice in between the defence and midfield, the Hammers have more recently played with two banks of four. Their strong core – Rice and Mark Noble – shores this position up and allows attacking threats greater freedom to roam forward. However, the real impact appears to lie in Manuel Pellegrini’s latest lineup: a 4-4-2 against Southampton.

Andriy Yarmolenko, Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini to push forward. Defensively, it clearly benefits the Hammers, who have kept five clean sheets this season and conceded the fewest goals of any side in the bottom six, despite often

torrid results and a stat-warping 5-0 loss to Manchester City on the opening day of the season. Key to this relative defensive assurance is Rice, who’s averaged three tackles per game in the league this season.

STEPHEN BROWETT

NORWICH CITY AWAY

45

Former owner and current club shareholder, Stephen Browett, is a veteran when it comes to Palace away days. For those of you making the New Year’s Day trip to Norwich on Wednesday 1st Janaury 2020, Stephen has all you need to know.

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

AWAY AT

NORWICH CITY

46

HISTORY Both clubs were founding members of the Third Division (South) when it was created in 1920, and we’ve faced-off against the Canaries 113 times since then - Palace won 1-0 on our first visit to Norwich in September 1920. Norwich City’s stadium at this time was in Rosary Road and was called The Nest, as was ours opposite Selhurst train station. The Canaries didn’t move to Carrow Road until 1935 when the land was leased to them by Colmans of Norwich – yep, the famous mustard producer. We were regular opponents in that league until the late 1950s and met again next in the Second Division in 1964 (another win for Palace). In subsequent years we crossed paths sporadically with just one season together in the 1970s in the old First Division.

We were both part of the originals that formed the Premier League. However, our debut seasons in the newly-formed competition had very different outcomes: Norwich finished third and we were relegated. Like us, they have been up and down since then and we were relegated together in 1994/1995 and in 2004/2005. Norwich have had nine seasons in the Premier league altogether, two less than us. MEMORABLE MATCHES Our last visit to Carrow Road was just over four years ago on the opening day of the 2015/2016 season. It was Yohan Cabaye’s first game for us and he scored in the last-minute to make the score 3-1 to Palace. I also remember an important away win there in the first season under CPFC2010 ownership – a 2-1

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

victory with our goals being scored by on-loan defenders Anthony Gardner and Julian Bennett. Other memorable games in East Anglia include a 1-0 win with a last-minute Shefki Kuqi goal in 2006 and another 1-0 win in March 2000 thanks to a goal from a 20-year-old Clinton Morrison. TRAVEL Despite being perceived as a ‘southern’ club, Norwich is a lot further away than many think and the journey is a long one. It always seems to take us well over three hours to get there by car. Your choices are the M11 to Cambridge and then cross country on the A11, or the A12 to Ipswich and then head north via Stowmarket. By train you would normally take a direct (but slow) train from Liverpool Street. But, there’s a

26.12.2019

PUBS AND BEER If the journey is off-putting, the choice of fine pubs and great beer makes a trip to Norwich worthwhile. Norwich is a great city for pubs and there is a huge choice of beers to be found. A recent survey found an extraordinary 254 unique real ales available in the city on any given day which means that Norwich rivals Sheffield and Derby as the UK’s ‘Capital of Ale’. There are over 30 Norwich pubs in the ‘Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide’ compared to the one in Watford! The city boasts, arguably, the UK’s finest real ale pub in The Fat Cat. In fact, it’s twice been voted the UK national pub of the year. It is a true beer lovers’ paradise with over 30 cask conditioned ales on draught. The same owners also have the Fat Cat & Canary nearer the stadium and the Fat Cat Brewery has its own tap room. There are many other terrific pubs to choose from and local beers can come from 44 Norfolk micro-breweries. The best known is probably Woodforde who

make Wherry Bitter and there is also the Wolf Brewery who make our very own Palace Ale brewed to Neil Morrissey’s recipe.

47

replacement bus service on New Year’s Day for part of the journey which will make it even slower than usual. The better option is probably to get to Cambridge or Peterborough and change. Overall, it’s going to take over three hours and four trains from south London to do the 120mile journey.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Several strikers have played for both clubs in recent years including Cameron Jerome, Ade Akinbiyi, Mathias Svensson and two Croydon boys who came through the Palace Academy: Lewis Grabban and Leon McKenzie. AND FINALLY I hope some of you have enjoyed reading this column in the Palace programme this season, which is my my 50th as a Palace fan. I attended my first game as a 10-year-old in 1969 and tomorrow is my 60th birthday. Cheers!

Denny Warren CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

26.12.2019

50

Every other week for over half a century, Denny Warren has walked from a local pub to the Lower Holmesdale. In recent years, this meant heading from the same seat in the Victory Club near Norwood Junction, past St Chad’s Catholic Church and onto the Holmesdale Road, where Selhurst Park rises like a cathedral in the heart of south London. But two seasons ago, this routine pilgrimage became hampered as Denny had to stop and rest on the walls of terraced houses packed along the five-minute stroll. ‘Alright, Denny? Want a hand?’ spotting a face known across SE25, passers-by would call out. A year later, Denny was in Mayday Hospital, celebrating his birthday over chocolate cake with the nurses on-hand to help him battle bladder cancer. A doctor walked in. “You’ve got months,” they said. Chemotherapy came and went unsuccessfully with Denny

suffering a heart attack after spending the day out with his wife, Margaret, in central London. “He just couldn’t breathe,” explains Margaret. “He’d had a mild heart attack caused by the chemo. They stopped straight away and said: ‘That’s it, there’s nothing we can do now.’” But sitting in Denny and Margaret’s living room a remarkable six months later, it would take an astute observer to know the pair had been through so much in such a short space of time. With Stella, the family dog, rubbing against heels much to the Warrens’ hospitable chagrin, Denny sits in an armchair - tea in hand and Margaret close by to fill any blanks - and recounts a lifetime’s memory supporting his local club. “I was about 17 in 1962. That’s when I started going up there,” he throws a thumb over his shoulder, pointing through his garden in Penge, over neighbouring roofs and towards Selhurst Park, about

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

a mile away. “Palace was my local team and that was it. I was at the top of the Holmesdale. It’s where I met all of my mates.” Though mates - and there are plenty of them - are not the only Palace-followers Denny has met and shared a mutual love for Crystal Palace with. Margaret married Denny as a fellow Palace fan in 1972. Having met at regular discos where the Shelverdine Goathouse now stands, Denny and Margaret would tie the knot not long into their relationship. But there was one problem. “When we decided we were going to get married, it had to be a Palace away game,” Margaret says. “We picked one date and my mum said: ‘No, that’s a bit early.’ It was September and we we’d picked February 24th. So we ended up getting married on-” Denny interrupts: “West Ham away.” Margaret swiftly corrects him: “17th March.”

26.12.2019

Palace was my local team and that was it. I was at the top of the Holmesdale. It’s where I met all of my mates

51

“Someone was telling me the scores,” Denny admits. “You didn’t know that, did you?” “Everything is always done around Palace,” Margaret says, justifying a revelation concealed for nearly 50 years. But Denny’s explanation is not unreasonable: “I had to keep up.” This year, the pair renewed their vows, with their son giving a speech in the family home for a father looking ahead at small, personal targets. “Now, we have all these milestones,” Margaret explains. “We give him milestones he has to get to. The first is Christmas, naturally. A family Christmas. The next big one is our grandson’s 21st, which is February.” Grandchildren – though those somewhat younger than 21 - sport red and blue in proud pictures on Margaret’s phone and the pair once ran a Croydon football team with ‘Eagles’ across the back and Palace colours on the rest. With the club so central in his life and firmly in his heart, Denny has one wish left: to watch Palace play from his seat in the centre of the Lower Holmesdale one more time. “I miss my seat,” he says, his voice trailing off. “I’ve had a great time up there.” He gestures over his shoulder again, through the garden and over the neighbours; Selhurst is just a mile away. But for Denny Warren, it will always be closer to home.

When we decided we were going to get married, it had to be a Palace away game.

26.12.2019

The poster went up outside the club shop. At first glance it was bog standard. It advertised away travel to Crystal Palace’s next fixture at Charlton Athletic, with buses collecting supporters on Holmesdale Road at 10.30am, providing a packed lunch and dropping them at the stadium prior to the 3pm kick-off. Except, on this occasion, there was a twist given the coaches intended to conduct a sightseeing tour of central London before heading back south, with their final destination only slightly further up the road outside the away end at Selhurst Park. It was in mid-December that landlords and reluctant tenants were thrust against each other in opposition for the first time since Charlton took up temporary residence in this corner of south London back in September 1985. For over four years they had ground-shared while competing in different divisions. Now, as Alan Parry had suggested in a cliché riddled featurette for ITV’s Saturday morning show, Saint & Greavsie, it was time for “the marriage to be consummated”. The clubs had never been particularly fierce rivals, but had

arguably grown further apart while occupying the same workplace. Everything about Charlton’s existence at Selhurst felt temporary, with their hierarchy understandably anxious to reassure an unsettled fanbase the priority was always to return home. “Although Charlton feel they’re lodgers, we would like them to feel they share the stadium,” said the Palace chairman, Ron Noades. “It’s not our fault, really, that they’ve carried on as lodgers. The scoreboard here, Palace paid for. Charlton were invited to share (the costs) and declined. The family enclosure here, Palace paid for. Charlton were invited to share and declined. So they have had the offer of facilities and not taken them up. That, in the long-term, is their loss.“ For Palace’s supporters and even players, the prospect of the away trip to familiar surroundings was just as unsettling. The away ticket board, with details stencilled out in black marker pen, detailed £5 for terrace, and £9 for members to buy seats. “The advertising hoardings around the ground will all be changed around,” said Noades. “Our fans will be in the away area, which they will find unusual

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

and quite unacceptable when they’re turning up at the Box Office and asking for tickets in the areas where they were standing or sitting previously. “The team will go in the away dressing room for the first time. Steve [Coppell] and I will sit in the directors’ seats of the away team, which is most unusual really. But while I’m pleased we won at Manchester United last week – otherwise we’d be looking to secure a first away win on our own ground – we’ve got a better chance of winning an away game than we’ve had this season.” Palace’s second success on their ‘travels’ would come at their lodgers’ expense. The Eagles, clad in their yellow away kit, led through Andy Thorn’s thumped header from Andy Gray’s free-kick. Ian Wright clattered the woodwork before Mark Bright nodded in a second, a simple header after Jeff Hopkins had flicked on a corner. Charlton were undermined further by Mark Reid’s missed penalty. Colin Walsh, who would score the Addicks’ first goal back at The Valley a little under three years later, did bend in a fine free-kick late on, but that proved a mere consolation.

53

The 2019/20 season marks 30 years on from the first year ‘back’ in the top-flight under Steve Coppell, and this week The Athletic writer Dom Fifield looks back at when Charlton Athletic called Selhurst Park their home.

PALACE FOR LIFE

Christmas is typically a time for celebration, relaxation and reflection and at Palace for Life Foundation we will certainly be aiming to do all three as we look back on a busy year and prepare for 2020. However, it is also important to remember that at this time of year, many people in our community need our support more than ever. I’m extremely proud of our large and dedicated team of coaches and mentors who always go above and beyond to support those around them. During Christmas week, our coaches are working with Crisis to run football sessions for people experiencing homelessness and one of our young trainees recently helped to organise a festive party for over 100 refugees in Croydon. Throughout the year, almost 9,000 Palace for Life sessions are run in the community, ranging from disability football, to mentoring young offenders in custody and hosting

healthy cooking classes for under-16s. We have helped 200 youngsters at risk of being caught up in crime to find a more positive future and 80 primary school children completed our Team Mates programme to help build their positive mental health. The power of Palace is one of our greatest strengths and this year many first-team players from the men’s and women’s squads visited schools and community groups, bringing joy to so many children. A highlight was Roy Hodgson joining our Down’s Syndrome team for their weekly training session, it was a special evening that the players and their families will never forget. None of our work would be possible without the generous support of you, the Palace fans, who have walked, run, cycled, volunteered, donated and bought Super Draw tickets in your hundreds. In 2019, you have helped us raise almost £250,000 to support our work

with vulnerable young people! Next year’s Marathon March on Saturday 10 October will follow a new route focused on south London and our brand new challenge, Bike to Bournemouth, will take place in March. Please join us if you can. We have three clear goals as we look ahead to 2020 – encouraging healthy lifestyles, creating safer communities and enabling positive futures for young people growing up in the boroughs around Selhurst Park. None of this will happen overnight but I urge you to do what you can to help us get there. Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year! Having started the season preparing for life with the Under-18s, then-17year-old Rob Street wouldn’t have believed you if you were to have told him that, come Christmas, he’d be top scorer for the Under-23s.

26.12.2019

58

The passion with which Rob Street discusses the elite strikers in the world of football is a clear demonstration – amongst many other traits that shine through in our interview – of a player who has the drive to succeed. Street begins: “I like [Harry] Kane. He’s just goals. Left foot, right foot, header; he scores tapins, he scores great goals. He can do anything! With the excitement building reminiscent of two lads discussing what Premier League stickers they’ve ‘got, got, need’, Street continues: “In terms of an all-round striker though, I like Robert Lewandowski. I swear he doesn’t get the credit he deserves! People always say ‘[Luis] Suarez or [Sergio] Agüero’. I do like them, especially Suarez’s aggression and putting himself about, but in terms of all-round play it’s Lewandowski.” Talk turns back to the Eagles, and in relation to the strikers currently at Roy Hodgson’s disposal, Street sees similarities between himself and Connor Wickham to himself: “I’m a bit like Wickham in terms of that I’m quite big for my age, can hold the ball up and when he is fit he does score a lot of goals. Ayew is different to me, whereas Benteke is a bit more of a target man than I am.” With three training sessions with the first-team under Street’s belt, you’d imagine it won’t be too long before Hodgson further discusses the

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

26.12.2019

promising striker with Shaun Derry. But for now, Street is focussed on hitting his own personal goals for this campaign. He reveals: “At the start of the season I set myself 20 goals target-wise over both age groups as I wasn’t sure what squad I would be with. I’m at 12 goals now and this is already my best season scoring-wise.” Honest in his appraisal, Street can easily pinpoint exactly what has changed in his style of play to have already reached double-figures before Christmas: “The way I’m playing now has seen me get into the box a bit more. Before I used to drop deeper and be more of a target man. I’m now keeping myself between the sticks rather than running the channels like I used to.” Sweeping generalisations of strikers will have you believe they’re selfish. But this doesn’t seem to be the case with Street. After all, how many top level forwards would choose a relatively easy finish for their current goal of the season? “I like the Charlton [Athletic] one at Selhurst Park because it was a team goal. Every goal has been different: the one against Coventry [City] I took on a couple of players so that was more of an individual one. But playing at Selhurst for the Charlton one is probably why it tops my list.”

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

Having fleeting moments with the first-team, returning to the Under-18s for their recent 4-2 win against Reading in the FA Youth Cup but playing most of his football with Derry’s Under-23s, Street has got a good ‘feel’ for the Palace setup and what is required from him at each level. He said: “The differences are massive [between the U18s and U23s]. The tempo is the big one. In the Under18s you will have spells where you are on the ball a lot but sometimes in the Under-23s you’ll have spells where you don’t touch the ball for half an hour. “It can be frustrating. But if you switch-off at Under-23s level then you’ll be punished and that goes up a level again when training with the first-team.” Throughout the interview Street is gregarious, polite and highly likeable, traits that Derry and Paddy McCarthy will be delighted with, with Street revealing the daily mantra drilled in to the squads: “They [McCarthy and Derry] have their ‘non-negotiables’: you work hard all the time, you’re professional, you remember your manners.” Rob Street: a credit to Crystal Palace Football Club on and off the pitch.

PALACEXI IN TIME By Ian King

Football has always been a staple part of the festive period. Our club historian, Ian King, looks back at a time when the Eagles faced Southampton in 1972, as well as few Christmas Day customs that no longer occur.

PALACEXI IN TIME

BOXING DAY OPPONENTS There is the myth that Boxing Day games usually involve a neighbouring club for a local derby but for Crystal Palace this rarely happens. One would think there would be many involving London clubs but this is not the case – Millwall lead the way for sides in the capital with five meetings on Boxing Day. This fixture is topped only by Brighton & Hove Albion and Portsmouth. Over the years Palace fans have had to travel to Sheffield, Torquay and Hull on the 26th December but the most bizarre must be the visit of Sunderland to Selhurst Park for a 12:00 kick-off in 1990. That summer, after the fixtures had been announced, Swindon Town were denied their promotion to Division One so the Black Cats took their place and fulfilled Swindon’s league programme. On a foul day of wind and driving rain chairman Ron Noades took pity on the early arrivals from the

North East giving them breakfast at the club and the shelter of the Arthur Wait stand for the game. SAINTS BATTERED Our first of five Boxing Day encounters with Southampton came in 1972, which was our next home game after the 5-0 mauling of Manchester United. There was just one change to the team from that memorable afternoon with John Craven replacing the injured Paddy Mulligan and David Payne moving to right-back. In the 18th minute November signing Don Rogers floated a corner that ended with Craven scoring the first goal and then it became the Rogers show, with a brace in the final 20-minutes sealing three points in a 3-0 win for the Eagles. FESTIVE FARE WITH THE HAMMERS The only occasion that Palace and West Ham have met over the festive season came in the wartime year

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

of 1917 with the clubs featuring in the London Combination League. Palace lost the Christmas Day fixture in east London but in the return game 24 hours later, at our temporary home in Herne Hill, they claimed a 4-0 victory. That season the clubs faced each other four times with the Hammers having the last laugh by winning 11-0 in the final game at Upton Park! CHRISTMAS FOOTBALL It was normal to play league football on Christmas Day and then play the same team again 24 hours later in the reverse of that fixture - this continued until 1957. On the 25th December matches usually kicked off in the morning and in those days there was public transport available until early afternoon. In the final season of this double-header setup, Palace defeated Brentford twice in Division Three South, winning 3-0 at Griffin Park on Christmas Day and then 2-1 back at Selhurst Park.

DEAN DAVENPORT

It was a difficult decision to let Ciara Watling move on to pastures new; I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t want her to leave. However, having saving spoken to Ciara a couple of times before her decision, it was difficult not to allow her to go by mutual consent. Ciara was my first signing after we achieved promotion four years ago and the club’s first international player. Coupled with her credentials of joining with experience of Women’s Super League 2 football having played for Millwall, she was a real statement signing for us at a key rebuilding stage. Ciara was a constant professional in training and games, and to this day, I can still say that she is the best trainer I have ever had the privilege to coach and manage. Furthermore, Ciara will be fondly remembered for her work off the field for the Eagles and Palace for Life Foundation. A true

ambassador for the women's game. Annabel Johnson has recently signed a new contract with the club, despite only joining in the summer, which highlights her impact. The new deal was an easy decision for us to make and we are delighted Annabel has signed up for longer on the journey we are on. We have a vision and Annabel fits with her desire to win and her ‘give everything’ mentality on the pitch and it is those qualities that make her a perfect fit. The club has recently welcomed the signing of free agent, Amber Stobbs. I tried to sign Amber at the start of last season but on that occasion she opted for Charlton Athletic. Midway through that campaign though, Amber decided to take some time out of football. I spoke with her about her decision and said to her that if she felt like playing again after her break to get in touch

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM UNITED

– I’m delighted she did just that. An energetic forward who can play anywhere across the top or as a No.10, Stobbsy is a fantastic player and her impact already has been superb. Finding the back of net on her home debut against Durham, as well as collecting the champagne for Player of the Match, is testament to her start to life here. Off the pitch, behind the scenes is always an important part of any clubs’ structure and 2019 has been a great one for us. The links between the women's team and main club have gone from strength to strength. The backing from all departments of Crystal Palace has been unbelievable and we couldn't have asked for anything more. Steve Parish and Phil Alexander's support in making this work cannot go unrecognised and they have really made the women's team feel part of this fantastic club.

73

We all knew that the summer recruitment of nine new players was going to be tough and that it would take time. I now truly believe that we are coming out of that ‘gelling’ period and that we can continue pushing for our aim of a top five finish.
