Saturday’s result with Tottenham was a disappointing one after securing back-to-back wins and neither I nor the players are making any excuses for it. As everyone who follows or is involved with the Premier League will know, it can be an unforgiving and unpredictable competition and that is what makes remaining in it such a commendable feat. Our performance on Saturday was not up to the standards we set ourselves although much credit must go to Tottenham for the ability they exhibited throughout the match, in particular physically and technically. Their start to the game was of the highest Premier League standard. Today’s match is another contest for us, early into this season’s campaign and it is one that I and the squad have been fully focussed on since Monday morning. We are fully aware that Wolves are a team not to be underestimated in any way after last season’s fine achievements.
That said, I am confident in our own abilities and know that we can perform to our best once again as we have done both this season and before. Furthermore, I am encouraged by the continued recovery of Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins, two very competent and accomplished defenders who have worked tirelessly to return to the squad. For Mamadou to complete 90-minutes last Saturday against Spurs was a big stride forward in his return and cannot be overlooked as an accomplishment and show of strength and determination. Injuries are part and parcel of football but it is always frustrating to lose a member of the squad. So, having been without Martin Kelly and Scott Dann last week, it was all the more pleasing that Mamadou and James are now nearing full fitness again. I would like to conclude my prematch comments today on a positive note. Early last week, I attended an
event in celebration of the Palace for Life Foundation, whose work with young people across south London is a fine testament to the club. I cannot overstate what a privilege it was to hear from some of the boys and girls whom the Foundation have supported and listening to them made me proud to be a part of the football family. Seeing what the sport can do alongside the care and drive of selfless people was a humbling experience and I must pay a sincere tribute to the Foundation for their relentless and valuable work. I and everybody at the club are proud to be associated with them and I look forward to seeing their continued growth in coming years. Now, returning to today’s game, I believe we will see a performance that reflects the talent we have in our squad and which mirrors our determination to improve upon last Saturday’s result. Enjoy the game!

LUKA MILIVOJEVIC
I was delighted to be back with my national team during the international break after a long, long time. It was a hard period for me where I did not play for Serbia but I am happy I am back and able to help out my country and teammates in achieving our goals. My focus after the international break returned to the aims of Palace. Therefore, myself and the squad were very unhappy with the result against Tottenham. It is important we learn from our mistakes against Spurs. We spoke honestly at halftime and after the game so we know what went wrong and how to fix that so it doesn’t happen again. We are able to focus on the positive performance against Aston Villa, which was a good one despite the lack of concentration in the last minute. Thankfully, the late goal did not stand. But if we did concede, after
a performance that saw us have a lot of chances, corners and put them under considerable pressure in their own half, we would’ve been unhappy. It’s those moments that highlight the need for full concentration for the whole game. In just a few seconds, Grealish goes through the middle and we almost lost two points and undone our hard work during that game. In the end we deserved the three points thanks to another goal from Jordan, so it was no surprise to me to see our fans named him ManBetX Player of the Month for August. He fully deserves it. He has been brilliant this opening month of the season. Last season he was with us on loan and he did a lot of good work for the team but probably didn’t get the amount of chances he would’ve liked due to different options we
had upfront in the likes of Michy and Christian. This season, returning on a permanent contract has given him a greater focus in his mind. I can see that from the first day after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations: he is hungry to score and he has added something we have missed. Today, I am expecting nothing different from the two games we played against Wolverhampton Wanderers last season. A team with good organisation, who stick to their system of three at the back with their full-backs high up the pitch and a midfield full of high quality, technical players. The likes of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho are good players who we cannot allow time on the ball due to the accuracy of their passing. But I have no doubt, with your support, we can get the job done today. Make some noise!

We need to put the Spurs game behind us, and remember what we did against Aston Villa in our next two games, which I am happy are both at our home of Selhurst.

STEVE PARISH
Three weeks ago we secured a hugely important win over a very strong Aston Villa side, with an excellent finish from Jordan separating the teams. I was extremely pleased that supporters voted him as our ManBetX Player of the Month – it was richly deserved, not just for his two crucial goals in the month, but for his tireless efforts in each of the games he’s played. Whilst the result against Spurs was hugely disappointing, it’s important not to get too carried away with good results like the win away at United, or too desperate about the bad ones. Last week, the two-year anniversary of Roy joining the club was marked. Roy’s results during that time speak for themselves, and I must say that he has been an absolute joy to work with since his first day with us. I feel extremely privileged to have him at our club, and I was pleased to see several
items of media coverage praising his work here and reflecting so warmly on an unparalleled career in football management. Roy and several other staff members attended a Palace for Life Foundation celebration evening recently. On the night, more than 100 guests heard from several figures from the charity as well as heart-warming stories from those who are helped by their good work. Like a young man called Shamel who was supported by Foundation staff whilst being held in custody, who we are now helping to complete his coaching badges. And a young girl, Mackenzie, who attended a Healthy Eagles programme, and whose selfconfidence has markedly improved. And several members of the Down’s Syndrome team who absolutely love their football. It just shows the breadth of work that the Foundation are doing; long may it continue.
Elsewhere in the club, I am delighted to welcome Shaun Derry back to Palace, who has joined our Academy coaching set-up. Shaun was a colossal player here, and everyone at the Academy will benefit from his return. The role will see him work alongside older agegroup players aiming to ease player progression from Development to senior football. Finally, a word on today’s opposition. Whilst it hasn’t been the start that they would have hoped for, Wolves had a remarkable season last campaign finishing seventh at the first time of asking since promotion from the Championship. I am absolutely sure that today’s match will be another tightly contested affair, so as always, throw your full support behind Roy’s team as loudly as possible. Up the Palace!

“The celebration of reaching the final helped the country all focus on one goal, just one team; everybody was in peace.” Despite the huge success in reaching the competition’s showpiece at the Cairo International Stadium, Kouyaté’s role as captain meant that the burden of dealing with the consequences that come with a high-profile and crushing defeat in a final were twofold. Not only are you looking for answers and comfort for yourself but you’re
“You get them focussing on going further the next time at the Africa Cup of Nation; I say to them: ‘Don’t cry. You’re an unbelievable player, stay strong.’ it is very hard for me because I want to cry but this is football and you must forget this one and look to the future.” Although the situation didn’t arise in Egypt, Kouyaté reveals there’s a good back and forth between himself and his fellow African internationals and the countries they represent in Ghana’s

the one that your teammates debutants and experienced pros alike - are looking to. How do you strike the balance of not wanting your teammates’ despair to spiral with your own sadness? Kouyaté explained: “It’s very, very hard because you’re the captain but you want to cry. At the same time you don’t want to cry in front of your teammates, especially the younger ones as you need to show them how to deal with the setback.
Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp and Ivory Coast’s Wilfried Zaha: “It’s always good to see them but when you play against your teammates you want to win for your country. However, away from the game we have a good relationship about it all: Jordan will say ‘Hey, the Ghana national team is the best’ and I will say ‘No, no it’s all about Senegal’ and then when Bakary [Sako] was here he’d be all about Mali. “It’s nice to have that, though. We enjoy the competition.”

A rescheduled interview due to an unforeseen commitment arising with his son gives us a glimpse into Cheikhou Kouyaté the family man. Until that moment, in an environment where football is all encompassing, we’d all be forgiven for subconsciously viewing Kouyaté as little more than a tireless and hardworking centre-midfielder. If you were to ask Kouyaté’s teammates how they’d describe him, though, we’d imagine the replies ‘character’, ‘entertaining’ and ‘thoughtful’ would crop up regularly. Because those are the traits that shone through with our Senegalese international when we grabbed breakfast with him on a warm morning at Copers Cope. If pride could be personified it would look something like Kouyaté talking about Senegal’s achievements in Egypt this summer. Despite ultimately losing out to Algeria 1-0 in the final, Kouyaté can’t help but smile at what the side that he captained did for his home country. He begins: “My summer was so busy at the Africa Cup of Nations; it was special for me, my teammates and all Senegalese people. “We were unlucky in the final. We deserved more but we did everything we could to win this for the Senegalese people. “We thank God for helping us make it there and you never know, maybe next time but overall it was a great experience.

“People say to me it’s easier for you to play centre-back because you aren’t running around so much but I like to be like that, running and working hard; I prefer to be in the midfield but I am happy wherever to help my teammates and where the manager wants me to play.” Attention turns to being teammates with his now-Palace club captain at Anderlecht: “I remember playing at the back with Anderlecht and Luka in the midfield ahead of me and he has progressed
Anderlecht the Serbian wasn’t just the one-inch shorter than Kouyaté that he is now. Throughout the whole interview Kouyaté is endearing, from talking about being close to tears post-Africa Cup of Nations to a brotherly love for ‘Man like Serbia’ and that doesn’t stop when the conversation moves on to a place he now refers to as his “second home”: south London. Through laughter, of course, Kouyaté laments the rush hour
“PLAYERS LOOK TOWARDS HIM NOW; HE IS A LEADER, HE IS OUR CAPTAIN. HE IS A VERY, VERY POSITIVE GUY AND I LOVE HIM”
a lot now. At Palace the player I see has taken on more responsibility, he is a leader who is constantly talking on the field but at Anderlecht he was a good, quiet boy. “Players look towards him now; he is a leader, he is our captain. He is a very, very positive guy and I love him!” Overhearing the comments from Kouyaté – no doubt the intention of our cheerful midfielder – Milivojevic jokes about the size difference of them back in Belgium, referencing the fact that back in
hustle and bustle of the capital. Did he miss it while away? “Not the traffic! London is so, so busy! But I love London, it is so, so easy for my lifestyle and for my wife. She loves it as it’s so easy for us to visit places or to get our children to school or to visit our friends. “You know what African people are like: get everyone together for big meals and celebrations and London allows us to do that; I love the community it creates.”

And just then, as if planned, on the training ground canteen’s screens up pops an interview with Schlupp on Sky Sports News. Kouyaté explodes: “Oh, Jeff! Look, it’s Jeff!” The childlike exuberance from Kouyaté at seeing his teammate, a man who is in the same room as him at the time, is truly laughter-inducing. In fact, there’s laughter most loudly radiating from the Eagles captain, Luka Milivojevic, who, unaware to us both, is sitting behind us during the interview and begins to laugh at the excitement and reaction of his midfield colleague. Kouyaté is now on one, with Milivojevic’s reaction sparking an equally passionate shout of: “Man like Serbia!” which echoes around the canteen followed by the Senegalese’s infectious laugh. Milivojevic and Kouyaté know each other well having played together 56 times for Anderlecht. During his time in Belgium, Kouyaté played mainly as a centre-back, a position he feels more than comfortable playing in, having done so for the Senegal national team and throughout his career at club level: “I know this position [centreback]. I played it for Anderlecht in some games, including in the Champions League. At West Ham I also played some games under Sam Allardyce and Slaven Bilic in that position so it is not new for me.

of watermelon and toast with Kouyaté. A talk that leaves us fully appreciating the role that he has around the club and in Roy Hodgson’s squad. Kouyaté being integral to Palace as a footballer is obvious; that is nothing outlandish or new to say, with the Eagle already instrumental in the early stages of the new season, playing his part in moments such as the historic Old Trafford victory. However, a bigger

credit to Kouyaté is acknowledging his role off the field, within the Palace squad. A man who possesses the leadership qualities of someone who captained his country to an AFCON final, as well as a man whose light-hearted approach to his teammates draws smiles when they’re most needed; Kouyaté’s blend of those two characters makes his role in Hodgson’s squad an imperative one.

In another refreshingly honest moment, Kouyaté reveals that he hasn’t always been so happy living in London. You can feel his surprise when reflecting back on his initial dislike of the city he now finds himself in for a sixth consecutive season across West Ham and the Eagles combined. Kouyaté reflects: “London is similar to Belgium for me. But I must say, when I first came to England with West Ham I went back to Belgium

Hands on knees. Backroom staff let out of their caves to see daylight for the first time in 12 months. Two people looking the wrong way. That’s right, this week it was the team photoshoot. This is the fifth team photo since I’ve been at the club and it’s pretty much the same every single time. Club legend Terry Byfield sorts out the seating plan, sends to the manager for approval and then on the day we all muck in putting chairs out and directing traffic. Long-serving club photographer Neil Everitt has been doing these since the Bronze Age so knows exactly what he’s doing, leaving us to concentrate on churning out the same old video for people to watch and work out who is missing. Because in four
out of the five shoots I’ve been at, somebody hasn’t been there! Time for designer Billy - who starred in my last column as a hotshot young marketeer – to step up with his Photoshop skills. Because it’s either Photoshop or a separate photo of the player in a box in the corner.
And that’s as messy as Luka’s untucked white undershirt. Let’s have a look at the improvement in editing skills over the years. In 2015, it was Yannick Bolasie who wasn’t able to attend the shoot, leaving academy player z to provide Yala’s ‘body’. Not bad, but we gave it

away by including the unedited lineup in the drone video. Oops! Pape Souaré was sadly missing in 2016 as the photo was soon after his road accident so this time we let people know in a statement that we’d edited his face onto Jacob BerkeleyAgyepong’s body. That meant everybody went to town criticising the quality of the edit because they were looking for it. Much like the start to that season, we can’t win sometimes. After a year where everybody was present, 2018 brought my favourite ‘missing person recovery’ as I got to step in and don the Palace goalkeeping jersey. Christian Benteke was
absent as he was getting his knee injury scanned so Darryl the assistant kit man replaced him in the original photo. We wanted it to look as realistic as possible, so a few days later we got Christian to stand in the exact same spot at the same time of day with myself and Videographer Mason Kiely performing the roles of Julián Speroni and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Although we told people we were kitting up to recreate the shadows that Jules and Aaron would’ve made, it was just an excuse to play footballer fancy dress. Which brings us to this year where one player was
missing. This time there was no body double, just a gap left and a headshot from media day slotted in instead. When the photo is released, see if you can work out who wasn’t there. No pressure, Billy.

PREVIEW 36
Wolves have failed to win their last six top-flight matches - Nuno Espírito Santo has never gone seven league games without a win.
FROM THE DUGOUT
“[CHELSEA] WAS A BAD PERFORMANCE. WE KNOW THAT, THE BEST WAY IS TO ANALYSE, KNOWING IT CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN. WE HAVE TO START FROM THE DEFENSIVE ORGANISATION.”
If Palace are to win today, then history suggests they will need a minimum of two goals, with Wolves having scored at least once in each of their last 14 away league games against the Eagles (W6 D4 L4) – the Wanderers last failed to net in south London in a 0-0 draw back in March 1985. Furthermore, this fixture tends to favour the visiting side with the away team having won six of the last eight league meetings between Crystal Palace and Wolves, with three wins each for both sides. This fixture has come at a good time for Palace, though, with Roy Hodgson’s side unbeaten in their last four Premier League games at Selhurst Park (W2 D2 L0), the
longest such run since December 2017 (six games). Wolves will up the fight today, though, as they look to banish any relegation chatter around their potential ‘secondseason syndrome’. This is the sixth occasion that Wolves have failed to win any of their first five games in a top-flight season, with the club relegated in each of those previous five campaigns (2003-04, 1983-84, 1975-76, 1964-65, 1905-06). If Palace are pushing for a late goal, then Hodgson will be looking to his bench to end a record that has seen none of the Eagles’ last 29 league goals be scored by a substitute - only Newcastle United (38) and Norwich City (35) are on longer current such streaks.

AMATEUR ANALYSIS PALACE V WOLVES
ORCHESTRATOR: RÚBEN NEVES 40
It’s nothing out of the ordinary to single Rúben Neves out as the orchestrator for Wolverhampton Wanderers but the question is how do you stop the playmaker for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side? The creative midfielder has made 272 passes in the league this season, with Conor Coady the teammate who is closest to those numbers on 192 passes. However, of Neves’ 272, 59 have been long balls with just 31 of those reaching their intended target. If you add short passes into the equation, then Neves has only made 197 successful passes in the opening five games for Wolves – no one in
the Wolves team has made more inaccurate short passes than Neves’ 47. If Palace can look to pressure the former Porto midfielder, a turnover of possession could provide Roy Hodgson’s side with a swift counter-attack. Rúben Neves' Strengths & Weaknesses Goals Shots Converted

JONNY CANNOT BE LEFT ALONE

Jonny’s passing v Chelsea
Apart from when Ruben Vinagre played as the left wing-back in the 3-2 defeat to Everton, Espírito Santo has selected Jonny in the four other league games. If picked to face the Eagles today, the Spanish full-back will require special attention from whoever Hodgson opts to play on the right-hand side of a midfield four or front three. Not only has Jonny registered the fifth most shots in the league for Wolves this season (4) - the expected quartet of Raúl Jiménez, Diogo Jota, Rúben Neves and Patrick Cutrone are the only ones to have had more – the Spaniard also made 37 of his 40 passes against Chelsea into the final third, demonstrating the attacking impetus of the LWB.
THE FORMATION NOT THE PERSONNEL Espírito Santo is loyal to his favoured 3-5-2 formation. However, the Wanderers’ poor start to their Premier League season, coupled with managing their Europa League campaign – a tournament which has seen them play seven times in the competition already this season – has meant that, from the back five, only Conor Coady has played in every league game so far.

Espírito Santo has tinkered with pushing centre-back Romain Saïss into the centre of midfield, whilst bringing in Jesus Vallejo into the heart of the defence for the recent Chelsea defeat. Furthermore, Adama Traoré and Matt Doherty have rotated in the right wing-back role, with Jonny and Ruben Vinagre sharing the same position

on the opposite side of the pitch. The tinkering of personnel and playing the players out of their usual positions could be something the Eagles look to exploit with a high-press, in the hope of forcing an error from players unaccustomed to their role or those that are ‘in and out’ of the side.

The number of US Championships that Wolves have won. Incredibly, in 1967 Wanderers won a US Championship after participating in a close-season mini-campaign in the US. Playing as the Los Angeles Wolves they won the Western Division and beat the Eastern Division champions Washington Whips in the final.
06
The number of trophies won by legendary manager Stan Cullis across his 16 years in charge. Cullis won three First Division Championships, two FA Cups and one Charity Shield. He was also just one-point shy of crowning Wolves as the first club in England to win the Double Burnley pipped them to the post to win the league in 1960.

0 The amount of games won by manager Terry Connor in his 13game spell at the helm in Wolves’ ill-fated 2011/12 campaign. Connor was appointed in February 2012 following the sacking of Mick McCarthy, but was only able to secure four points out of a total 39, which saw the team relegated to the Championship.

The number of years Wanderers have occupied Molineux. The ground was named after Molineux House, a nearby mansion.
Wolves were the first club to reach 7,000 goals in the English Football League, when Seol Ki-Hyeon scored the opener at Selhurst Park on 19 minutes in a Championship game back in December 2005. Andy Johnson equalised on half-time and the spoils were shared.

130 SOMEONE THEY’D LIKE TO FORGET: Palace fans have fond memories of Kevin Phillips but the same cannot be said for the Wolves supporters, with the striker managing eight goals and two assists in 13 games against the Wanderers during his career.

WEST HAM UNITED

HISTORY Crystal Palace first played West Ham away in 1906 (the game finished 1-1), but we didn’t have to wait long for our first away day win against the Hammers, with the game in the September of 1908 in the Southern League finishing 1-0 to the Eagles. From 1923 until 1969 (when we finally made it to the First Division) we hadn’t played the east Londoners once. Furthermore, it took us until 1992 to finally beat the Hammers at Upton Park for the first time in the top-flight. However, we were unbeaten in our last three visits to Upton Park, which were all in the Premier League. There’s a great image of the players in the yellow away strip celebrating a 1-0 win in front of the Palace fans in April 2014; a result that
ensured our survival in the Premier League in our first season back. The following season we won 3-1 thanks to two goals from Muzza, who was also sent-off in an eventful match. However, the London Stadium is a venue where we are yet to experience taking home three points, with our clashes there so far ending in two defeats and one draw. MEMORABLE MATCHES I will always remember the Premier League match against West Ham at Upton Park on a dark Monday night in November 1997. And I’m sure Neil Shipperley does, too! Shipps scored twice in the firsthalf but those goals were chalked off his record when the floodlights went out and the match was abandoned. An Asian betting syndicate was later found to have been behind it.
In the rearranged game, Shipps scored his third goal in the fixture but that was to no avail as we lost the match 4-1. Of course, he was to have his revenge in 2004 when he scored the only goal as we beat the Hammers in the Championship play-off final in Cardiff. TRAVEL This is the second of four consecutive Premier League away games in London, so another short journey for Palace fans. Most supporters arrive at the London Stadium by train, tube, London Overground or the DLR to Stratford. There’s a walk of nearly a mile from the station to the ground. Personally, I prefer to take a London Overground train to Hackney Wick and enjoy a pint before a short walk along the canal into the Olympic Park.
CRYSTAL PALACE v WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
PUBS AND BEER East London has some excellent micro-breweries with a great choice of real ales and craft beers. Pretty Decent Brewery in Leytonstone is owned by Palace fans. Closer to West Ham you’ll find lively tap rooms at Crate Brewery and Howling Hops (both a short walk from the stadium) or for those arriving at Stratford, Tap
East is located within Westfield shopping centre. My own favourite east London brewery is Five Points who make a lovely hoppy blonde called XPA. This was judged beer of the festival at the CPFC Beer Festival a couple of years ago. Five Points beers can be found at the Pembury Tavern in Hackney, a location the brewery bought to showcase their impressive range which is brewed in the railway arches under Hackney Downs station. FAMOUS FANS When I was growing up, West Ham’s most famous fan was the fictional Alf Garnett of ‘Till Death Do Us Part’. These days their most high-profile supporters are probably actors Ray Winstone and Russell Brand.

A chicken shop here and coffee shop there, it is perhaps too easy to become accustomed to one’s surroundings after a period of time. Take a walk through Crystal Palace Park, however, and the scattered collection of remarkable - even bizarre - historical markers will knock you for six. Just around the corner from endless fried wings and frappuccinos, life-sized, Darwinian dinosaurs peer through thick shrubs with little warning, remains of a Victorian palace mark themselves atop the hill as if they once formed a Renaissance garden shed and the setting for 20 years of FA Cup finals and Crystal Palace’s first 10 years sits at the foot of the park as yet another astonishing - if almost unknown - site of interest. Queen Victoria, Charles Darwin and Isambard Kingdom Brunel are just three names associated with the urban treasure alongside Robert Baden-Powell, Sir Joseph Paxton and even Bob Marley. A space entrenched in its community’s history, Crystal Palace
Park hosts a surprising number of stories given its relatively brief lifetime. Created in 1854, its existence is a modern one compared with Royal Parks such as Greenwich, Regent’s and St James’s; all dating back to the Middle Ages and before. Designed to host the rebuilt Crystal Palace after its transition from Hyde Park, Crystal Palace Park was a space to showcase Victorian exhibitionism, with the Palace itself being a grandiose home to a series of courts which represented various stages of history and fine art. There was a circus, an aquarium - which can still be seen today, abandoned tanks et al - and various festivals held at the Palace until its destruction by fire in 1936. Fast-forwarding to the 1970s and the Crystal Palace Bowl became the Glastonbury of south London for the Crystal Palace Garden Parties, which hosted the likes of Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys and Lou Reed as collections of fans gathered in the weedy pond below their stage. The Park was also the location
for the founding of the Girl Guides movement as a group of daring young women approached Robert Baden-Powell at his Scout Rally in the park to demand the formation of a Scouting movement for girls. The Guides’ founding came halfway through Crystal Palace’s occupancy of the National Sports Centre, the then-host of the FA Cup final. With the club formed in 1905, the Eagles competed at the Centre until being forced to relocate in 1914 with the outbreak of war. Today, helping to preserve our former home to serve its community and house its history are various groups who care for different aspects of the park’s upkeep. One of these is the Friends of Crystal Palace Park, who run a website and help to promote and organise events for locals within the park. David, a Friend of several years, takes us on a tour, displaying an impressive knowledge of which nook and cranny plays home to which unmarked piece of history.

51
A graphic designer by trade, David volunteers with the Friends and in doing so seems to balance two jobs in one go. He explains why his and others’ sacrifice is so important: “I think it’s important, essential, for a park this size that people can come and find stuff out. There are lots of other groups involved, historical groups or sporting groups, to share that. It’s important for people to get out and that’s a bit of a thing with people’s wellbeing. Have some time and you might learn something whilst you’re here. “My enthusiasm for the space and the park and what’s here and what’s on offer motivates me to encourage others here. I guess I was them once: I came in not knowing anything about the park and three years later I can whittle on until your heart’s content. We send people off to enjoy their time in the park and hopefully come again.” As we begin to wrap up the tour, however, David goes on a slight diversion: to the Crystal Palace Park Farm. “There are meerkats,” he casually announces. Of course there are. Meerkats, dinosaurs, palaces and reggae, there is too much to mention in one piece. But take a stroll through south London’s streets and head through the park. Rid yourself of chicken and coffee shop tedium and - who knows - you may even find something that surprises you...

Everything about Crystal Palace’s trip to Anfield in mid-September, 1989, was horrific. The whole experience was the stuff of nightmares, a humiliation Steve Coppell admitted would haunt him forever and a thrashing which would set most teams back on their heels. As it transpired, the most painful of reality checks would ultimately prove the catalyst to the side’s successful push for survival at the higher level. Coppell, who hailed from the Wirral and had friends and family in the stands that Tuesday night, would address his crestfallen players in the away dressing room post-match and tell them they had inadvertently put Palace on the map. The Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, popped his head round the door and told the vanquished they had done well to persevere as the goals rained in. “You could have scored four,” he added before taking his leave. The problem was, the hosts had mustered nine. Eight different players registered for the home team that night, with Steve Nicol starting and completing the rout. Steve McMahon, Ian Rush, Gary Gillespie, Peter Beardsley, Jon Aldridge
– with a penalty converted on his first touch – John Barnes and Glenn Hysén all helped themselves in between. Ian Wright and Mark Bright, forever taking kick-offs, later admitted they had lost count of the goals that had been shipped. Phil Barber, absent through injury, recalled: “coming in and turning on Ceefax and there was a whole page dedicated to the Liverpool scorers.” The ribbing was merciless. Ronnie Whelan asked Geoff Thomas if Palace ever trained with the ball back at Mitcham. Poor Perry Suckling, whose playing career would never quite recover, had no chance with panic setting in all around. “It wasn’t his fault, but it ruined Perry,” said Bright. “Liverpool brought out a video of that game within a week, and somebody bought it for me for Christmas. I watched it once and everyone was trying. That was the frightening thing. Coppell came into the changing room – it was so quiet – and said: ‘That will never happen to you again in your professional careers.’” And yet, as Dalglish acknowledged, Palace had mustered moments of quality amidst the horror. Thomas belted an early free-kick
against the post, and later ballooned a penalty, won by Alan Pardew, over the bar. “And we had two one-on-ones with their keeper,” said Coppell. “But every time they attacked they scored. When we got the penalty, my assistant, Stan Ternent, turned to me and said: ‘Right, when we score, we’re running on that pitch and jumping up and down like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.’ Then Geoff went and hit row F. “After the game I was just numb. Numb and embarrassed. I was ashamed to see my family and friends and I drove home by myself that night. The next day I was due to do an event down at Thornton Heath pond and some bloke on a bus saw me and started effing and blinding at me. I suppose you have to laugh at it now. At least it was the catalyst for us to spend money on some very good signings.” It ended up being all about the reaction. Palace went to Southampton just four days later and, despite falling behind, steeled themselves to secure what felt a critical point courtesy of Jeff Hopkins’ header and Russell Osman’s slice into his own net. “That was a huge result for us,” added Bright. “It felt like we’d won the lottery after Anfield.”

PALACE FOR LIFE
Roy Hodgson joined 150 special guests and local youngsters at Selhurst Park to celebrate the Foundation’s work in the community. Hodgson took part in a panel discussion about the power of sport and also spent time meeting some of the young people that the Foundation supports. Speaking on the night, Hodgson said: “To see all the people in the room, the various teams, the Down’s Syndrome team for example, the wheelchair team. To know there are so many people who care and do so much work, it’s very humbling. It’s also something that makes me quite proud to be a part of football, knowing that football can do so much to improve people’s lives. “Here in south east London, it’s really needed and the work that the Palace for Life Foundation does has
so many benefits for so many people. I can only hope that it continues to grow at the extent it’s been growing for the last few years.” The Foundation supports 14,000 young south Londoners a year through a range of programmes, including the running of the Down’s Syndrome Eagles. Anita, mother of Louis, one of the players, joined her son and Hodgson on stage and said: “It’s amazing to be involved, he’s [Louis] been playing with the team for two years and he’s learnt so many skills. “Learning how to play a match, sharing with others, communicating: it’s not just football. It’s nice for him to play in a team with other children with disabilities. I found it hard to put him into a club, but when I found Palace for Life I didn’t look back.”
Palace for Life Foundation Chair, Ed Warner, added: “The work we do is so important, but together we can do more. We are so grateful to those people who help us and as a Premier League club we’re taking the global brand and bringing it alive for the local community which is really very special. “For example, we work with 50 young people on programmes such as Breaking the Cycle which works to prevent crime, but we want to be working with 500! It’s just a matter of resources, together we can really make a difference.” Find out more about Palace for Life Foundation by visiting www.palaceforlife.org or following @palaceforlife across social media.

INVEST IN WHAT YOU LOVE 56 CRYSTAL PALACE v WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
Sean Robertson caught up with us down at the Academy Training Ground this week to discuss his first professional contract.
22.09.2019
58
“I grew up in south London, Peckham,” says 18-year-old Sean Robertson. “It was a rough area. “The area, it’s not good; I did well to get out of it. Football is just a way out of whatever is going on.” Growing up in south London from a young age, Robertson watched his brother play for the Tottenham Hotspur Academy before being encouraged to do likewise himself aged 13. Supported by his father - a local bus driver - and brother, who dropped out of football to become a physio upon sustaining an injury during his time with Spurs, Robertson began to hone his footballing skill under the guidance of his family. Signing with Chelsea aged 11 before joining the Eagles less than a year later, Robertson realised football was his future at the age of 14, leaving his school in Camberwell to join the Oasis Academy, where he would study sociology and PE. The Croydon-based college supports its pupils in joining the club and saw the now-18-year-old join fellow Academy prospects David Boateng, Brandon Pierrick and TQ Addy on their first step towards professional football. For Robertson, his sporting epiphany came at the start of a season with the Under-14s. “Once I got to the age of 14 I knew it was starting to get serious,” he said. “There was a moment: when Jack Mesure my coach told me that I might be getting a
CRYSTAL PALACE v WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

scholarship. As soon as we started the Under-14 season he said: ‘you might get a scholarship.’ “That’s when it really clicked in. At the time I didn’t know what a scholarship was, he had to explain it to me. He told me and I thought: ‘okay, basically this can really do something now.’ At the end of the season, I got the scholarship and that’s when everything started. “That’s when I knew football was definitely something I was going to pursue.” Inspired to follow the style and example of Raheem Sterling - newly transferred to Manchester City when the youngster’s interest piqued - Robertson got his head down and focussed on achieving his goal. To the delight and approval of his mentors - father and brother - he was offered a scholarship and later a professional contract in the summer of this year. Reflecting on the reward for his efforts, Robertson said: “They were definitely happy for me because I’d done a lot of training with my brother, he used to help me and my dad used to help me.
“I just went home and told them the news. They were buzzing really. But they expected it. They weren’t too over the moon because it’s just the beginning. “[Getting the professional contract] was definitely a good moment for me. I was just showing that hard work pays off and it’s just the beginning really. Around March, I was playing Under18s and all of us second years had a meeting and Paddy [McCarthy] told me when I went into my meeting: ‘yeah, we’re happy. We’re going to offer you a professional contract.’ I was happy.” Now, beginning his career with the Under-23s full-time, Robertson has settled into yet another team at the club he has spent the last seven years with. “It’s been good,” he said. “Since I was a first-year, I’ve been playing Under-23s and featuring. I’ve always had a taste of Under-23s football. I think it’s really good under Shawsy [Richard Shaw] and we’ve got a new coach now under Shaun Derry. He’s a really good coach, you can tell.” And after all that time, it seems Robertson’s been converted… “Half of my family support Liverpool, the other half support Manchester United. I support Palace.” We’re proud to hear it, Sean.

WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY Crystal Palace is proud to raise awareness for ‘World Alzheimer’s Day’. Dementia is a condition that affects 850,000 people over the age of 65 in the UK, and currently there is no cure, although research into better treatments and ways of preventing dementia is a priority. Over recent years the prospect of preventing dementia has become a reality, and there is now an urgent need to discover and develop new methods and treatments that can prevent or delay the disease.
The CHARIOT Register has been organised by Imperial College London’s School of Public Health. It is a list of healthy volunteers aged 50-85 who are interested in taking part in studies into the prevention of dementia. Its main research aims are to better understand risk and protective factors for dementia and help develop methods for early prediction and prevention. Once a person has agreed to be on the register they will receive information about CHARIOT and studies looking at dementia prevention. You are under no
obligation to take part in any study just because you have agreed to be on the register. More volunteers are still needed to help. To request a signup pack or for more information please call: 020 7594 7371, email: dementia.prevention@imperial. ac.uk or visit the website: www. chariotregister.org

PALACEXI IN TIME
TRAIN DELAY The party of Palace players and officials left Paddington station just after 11:00am but the locomotive hauling the train broke down near Leamington and did not reach Wolverhampton until 03:15pm, nearly two hours late. The players had already changed into their playing kit in the compartments on the train and the coach from the station managed to quickly get them to Molineux. The match kicked off at 3:30pm (half an hour late). MATCH OF THE DAY Also on the delayed train that day was commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme, with the game set to feature that evening on the BBC football programme Match of the Day - quite an honour for a Second Division fixture. THE 90 MINUTES It might be said that the disruption to their journey hindered the Palace players as they turned in a somewhat lacklustre performance.
However, that could not be said of ‘keeper John Jackson. Starting his first full season in goal, ‘Jacko’ gave the finest display so far of his burgeoning career, restricting Wolves’ forward line to just one goal. Jackson’s performance was such that the club received letters of praise about him from Wolves fans the following week. PLAYER CONNECTIONS The Wolves team that afternoon contained former Palace defender John Holsgrove who had come through the Palace juniors before joining the opposition that summer. Right winger, Terry Wharton, joined Palace in January 1971, having spent the majority of his career with Wolves. However, Wharton was unable to make an impact in SE25 and had left by the end of that year. Centre-forward for Wolves that day was Hugh McIlmoyle. The striker nearly joined Palace in June 1971, with the Eagles
having agreed terms with McIlmoyle’s club at the time, Middlesbrough. He came down to south London, meeting Bert Head and looked at houses in the Croydon area. However, after a night in a local hotel he returned to his home and family in Leicester and the following day advised Head that he had had a change of mind and would not be coming to Selhurst Park. WHOSE SIDE IS HE ON? The following season Palace travelled to Molineux for a midweek fixture on Wednesday 7th September 1966. However, the day before David Burnside had been transferred from Palace to Wolves but it was too late to include the change in the programme where he was duly shown as No. 8 for the Eagles. There was a similar occurrence at the start of this season, with James McCarthy appearing in the squad list for Everton, having signed for the Eagles after the print deadlines.

RICHARD SHAW
We’ve had a mixed bag so far in our six games with the same number of draws, wins and losses. I thought the first game of our season was good, and we were lucky enough to have the positive influence of Stephen Henderson, Victor Camarasa, Gary Cahill, James McCarthy and Jairo Riedewald involved against Birmingham City; that was a game we really should’ve won with the amount of chances but overall I was happy with the performance. We took that 90 minutes into our next game, away at Crewe, who have an excellent and well-structured Academy, so to go there and win 1-0, in the manner in which we did, was pleasing. Then we did have two little blips against Hull City and Barnsley. Against Hull we had a lot of players involved in the first-team’s Carabao Cup clash, which is something I’m delighted about, so I wasn’t too worried about the result but the performance
was something we had to dissect and discuss. And the same for Barnsley. The last two performances, though, have been very good. Leeds was a decent point against a strong side. And the Bolton game on Monday night was excellent, with the boys putting in the best performance of the season so far to win 5-1; the desire, the energy and sticking to the game plan was superb. To score so many was pleasing for myself and the coaches as we’ve been speaking to the boys about what they could be doing to improve in the final third. The bottom line for me, though, and one I always like to remind people of is: kids will be kids. These are players still in the development phase of football, so the consistency isn’t always there. That footballing education can be developed with loan deals, too, which is why I think it’s great for Joe Tupper to have joined Margate on loan. I had a loan spell with Hull City during my early days
at Palace and it was hugely beneficial. A loan deal helps shake things up for players as sometimes you can get too comfortable in your environment. It’s good to go out and experience the different demands that get put on you, playing in front of crowds and playing for points in League One, Two or non-league. Looking ahead to our next game, I’m expecting a difficult game tomorrow against QPR. They’re a side that take the development side of things seriously, so I’m expecting a few different formations to be thrown in. When you win a game against QPR, you’ve got to really earn it. They’ve recruited well over the summer and will perhaps have a few lads that are a quite a bit older than ours. However, we’ve tended to have good results against them in the last four or five years and I’m looking forward to it off the back of a couple of really good performances from our boys.

It’s been great to welcome Shaun Derry to the setup, and in his first couple of weeks he has contributed a lot to our age-group. I can tell he’s going to be great to have around, not just with the Under-23s, but the Academy as a whole.

FREYA HOLDAWAY
Recent changes highlight the transition the side has gone through over the summer, as we now look to go further than just establishing ourselves in the Championship; that isn’t going to be satisfactory for us as a club. Being down the table and involved in a relegation fight isn’t where we want to be at all. However, with the added experience and talent of players who have come from a higher level, I’m confident we can make the necessary strides up the league. I unfortunately missed our away draw against Lewes due to an injury I picked up whilst away on international duty with Northern Ireland. However, I still came and supported the girls from the sidelines. Lewes have built themselves up and got a new manager in over the last six months so they’re building their philosophy. I felt on the day we matched them really well in terms of our structure and organisation and
we were able to counteract them. After taking the lead through Ashleigh Goddard, I think we can be disappointed to not have taken more from the game. Our concentration was perhaps not where it should’ve been given that we conceded so quickly after going ahead. Last Sunday’s game against Aston Villa was obviously very difficult to take. As captain, I always reflect upon whether I did enough, whether I said the right things and if my performance was up to the required standard. Every team in every league across football will experience results they didn’t expect, and that can be a positive as well as a negative. For us the Villa game was, sadly, a negative. I’m pleased it happened to us early on in our season as it can now be used as a lesson going forward about what went wrong and also for us going out to do everything we can to avoid feeling like that again.
We are looking to put that result behind us today when we take on Lewes in the Continental Cup. I expect us and Lewes to approach the game slightly differently from our league fixture two weeks ago, as it gives us a chance to explore different personnel and styles of playing. I want to close out my column with a mention to Ashlee Hincks who suffered a long-term injury early on in the game against Lewes. I took her to hospital after that game and Ash and I have spoken daily since the injury; it’s important she knows that the squad and the club are supporting her in her recovery. As vice-captain, Ash is huge character within the team, her leadership skills coupled with her composure on the ball are going to be big misses for us. However, thankfully, this squad is full of leaders and there will be plenty stepping up in Ash’s absence.

The first game of the season we started with just three players that were with us last season, so the number of new recruits over the summer has been something different from my previous four seasons with the club.
