Who Should Be Seen By a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist?

Page 1

• Maternal-fetal medicine (a.k.a. perinatology) is a sub-specialty of obstetrics that deals with more complicated aspects of pregnancy. • A maternal-fetal medicine specialist (or MFM specialist) goes through additional training to deal with high-risk pregnancies, medical/surgical complications, and complex fetal health conditions. • They partner with OB-GYNs to work toward the best possible health outcomes for both mom and baby.

• Women and couples who want to conceive but are concerned about possible risks should talk with an MFM specialist during the pre- conception stage. • The specialist can help create a healthy pregnancy plan, get an idea of overall health, and make recommendations for supplements, medication, and other treatments.

• If there have been problems in previous pregnancies, the MFM specialist may be able to come up with solutions to prevent those.

• Women and couples concerned that their baby may be at risk for a serious health condition should see an MFM specialist to talk about testing and pre-screening options. • They can screen for: o o o o o o

Patients should reach out to their OB to determine whether they should come in to be seen or visit the local emergency room.

• Women in the process of labor and delivery should be seen by an MFM specialist if there are concerns about risks during birth. • If something goes wrong, they have the specialized knowledge needed to determine the right cause of action. • After delivery, the specialist can investigate any unusual events and make appropriate recommendations for recovery and/or future pregnancies.

• Women who had a difficult delivery or are at risk for post-birth complications should also see a MFM specialist for care. • Possible issues requiring follow-up care include: o Infection o Heavy bleeding o Seizures o Other surgical complications
