It also requires certain companies to show why they are collecting the data, how they use it, and to minimize the use of personal data.
Violators of the law face potential penalties imposed by the state attorney general and Colorado’s district attorneys. The law does not authorize a private right of action for a violation.
If this trend continues, other states may adopt similar laws or federal legislation may be promoted. While the Computer & Communications Industry Association said it supported protections for consumer privacy, it stated that it favors the adoption of federal standards and not a “piecemeal” state approach.
