ACaaS: Access Control as a Subscription

Discover some of the latest new business opportunities By Kelly Bond, VP of Dealer Development, Brivo

As long-standing members of the security industry, you know the kind of efficiency that grows from a foundation of security. This year has exposed all the holes in both the physical and cybersecurity solutions organizations have been getting by with for years.

COVID-19 has awakened security and HR professionals to the broader need for access control that can solve new problems related to health, safety, and occupancy. The benefits of operational efficiency, integrated and comprehensive solutions, and remote building control have been made abundantly clear in our COVID-19 world.

The trouble for businesses ready to upgrade their overall security and access control is that COVID-19 also brought economic woes. Leaders understand the critical need, but their budgets are tighter due to dips in revenue and an unsure economic future. [12]

Access control has come a long way from the on-premises systems of the past. Now it is built in the cloud and can integrate with a plethora of other cloud solutions — including alarms. It is mobile, flexible, cybersecure, and enables remote management of what happens at the facility. But none of that matters if your customers can’t afford it.

The next evolution of access control is not a new feature, but a new way to purchase.

The most leading-edge aspect of access control is making it accessible for everyone. Selling it as a subscription makes that possible.

We can give our customers complete security, not just the alarm, or the access control, or the video surveillance. Now, it all integrates together to be one comprehensive solution and it’s all sold as a subscription service. This can be a game-changer for many companies, particularly small businesses who are trying to manage expenses while increasing their ability to manage how and when people access their businesses. Our role for them now is more than an alarm supplier, it is a security partner; one that can help create a tailored security solution to fit their security and budget needs. Consider the importance of that role and what it can mean for your relationships with customers and your business.

You already know how this works. The alarm side of the security industry has been selling subscription services. Now access control can be part of that subscription sale.

Adding subscription access control to your portfolio can substantially increase your recurring monthly revenue (RMR). If there is one thing COVID-19 brings to light for security resellers is the importance of recurring revenue. The more you can rely on RMR, the stronger your business, even during economic turbulence.

The best part about the latest evolution of subscription access control – Access Control as a Service – is that it’s beneficial for everyone. Your customers can have the innovative physical security solution they need and you can fortify your business with increased RMR. It is a true win-win.

5. What advice would you give to another woman who aspires to rise to upper level management in the monitoring industry?

The advice I would give women is the advice I would give anyone looking to move up in any industry: • Add value to the company. Don’t just think about you or your career – think about the company. I first got noticed when I was a receptionist who had an idea on how to save $250k in vendor management. It landed me my next job. • Seek out feedback. Honest critical feedback can be hard, but it will make you better. Seek it from your critics equally as you do from your supporters. • Don’t be afraid to fail. Step into bigger shoes that you might be comfortable with. Staying comfortable does not produce growth. For women, I would encourage them to raise their hands for things that may seem bigger than what they are qualified <<COVER STORY for. There is an interesting Harvard study showing how men often apply for jobs they are only 60% qualified for and women wait until they are 100% qualified.

For women in the monitoring industry, I recommend keeping sharp on technology, other industries and out-of-the-box thinking. The alarm industry can often feel like ground hog day which can put thinking into “the way it’s always been done” place. We need women leaders – and men leaders – that are helping to innovate in our industry, particularly in monitoring.

Michele Levcik Asset Protection Manager – Security Operations Center, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.

1. When and where did you begin your career in security and/or monitoring?

I started as the Security Operations Center Manager in March 2016. Prior to that, I worked in Asset Protection as a Manager leading the Special Systems (AP Technology), Risk Assessment, and Fraud Analysis teams. I’ve been in Asset Protection for a little over 10 years. I’ve been with Wegmans for almost 30 years, holding positions in Store Operations, Finance, and Information Technology.

During my last 10 years in Asset Protection, I’ve been involved with ASIS Rochester, and active member of TMA’s Proprietary Committee, and have networked with many companies to improve our Operation. I’ve found that leaders in this industry are open and willing to share ideas and successes in their own Operations.

LAW >> California’s Sweeping New Data Privacy

Businesses urged to implement new practices

By Kelly Bastide, Venable LLP

On July 1, 2020, enforcement of the most sweeping U.S. data privacy law began. Known as the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (“CCPA”), the law was enacted by the California legislature in response to a ballot initiative that would have created a different consumer privacy law that many in the industry viewed as more burdensome. The law applies to companies doing business in California that collect personal information from California residents and satisfy certain thresholds for company revenue or amount of data. Among the most notable aspects of the law is that it contains the broadest definition of “personal information” of any private law to date. The CCPA defines personal information to mean information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked, directly or indirectly, with a specific [16]

consumer or household—a definition that sweeps in data elements that are not associated with a single individual. The CCPA also creates new rights for consumers with respect to their personal information, including the right to know about, access, delete, and opt-out of the sharing or selling of the personal information businesses collect about them. In addition to creating these rights for consumers, the CCPA imposes obligations on businesses to provide detailed notices about data practices, refrain from “discriminating” against consumers, train employees to comply with the law’s terms, and keep records in relation to consumer requests, among other requirements. Companies engaged in “sales” as defined under the CCPA must add a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” button to their homepages and implement other changes to respond to consumer requests. The CCPA tasked the California Office of the Attorney General (OAG) with the responsibility for promulgating regulations to implement the law. After an extensive notice-and-comment period, the OAG finalized the regulations in time for the July 1 enforcement date. Under the law, California AG Xavier Becerra may seek an injunction and civil penalties of $2,500 for each violation and $7,500 for each intentional violation. It has been widely reported that the AG sent Notices of Violations to certain companies allegedly in violation of the CCPA on or shortly after the July 1 enforcement date. The law gives companies a 30-day period to cure any such alleged violations.

The CCPA also contains a private right of action that permits consumers to obtain statutory damages—the greater of damages in the amount of $100 - $750 per consumer per incident or actual damages—and injunctive relief if their personal information becomes subject to unauthorized access and exfiltration, theft, or disclosure as a result of the business’s failure to implement and maintain reasonable security procedures and practices.

Companies subject to the CCPA likely need to make significant changes to their business practices in order to comply with the law. With CCPA enforcement in full swing, companies should ensure they are taking steps to implement any necessary changes as soon as practicable.

BUSINESS >> Email Marketing; Still Relevant? Our expert says unequivocally, “Yes!”

By David Morgan, Co-Founder, SD Marketing

All you “internaughts” know that email marketing has been around a long time. Long enough that it has lasted through the early days of waiting through an agonizingly long period of ear-piercing squealing before getting to that amazing reward of “You’ve got mail!” But a couple of decades of Nigerian prince schemes and mountains of spam may have you wondering if email marketing is relevant and effective today and should you include it in your 2021 marketing plan.

Let us tell you unequivocally, it is, and you should. Email marketing may not be new, but it is the stalwart hero of marketing that, when done right, delivers an average ROI of $42 for every $1 spent, according to Statista.

Here are some important reasons why it continues to be so effective and outshine other modes of marketing, and what it

means for you specifically in the security industry.

No matter where your security business is located or the areas served, your customers are almost guaranteed to be using email. There are 3.9 billion email users currently, with that number projected to hit 4.3 billion by 2023 (Statista). In fact, email is the preferred mode of communication today. One study from Marketing Sherpa reports that 72% of consumers prefer to receive promotional messages through email which they access across all devices, with mobile opens accounting for an astounding 46% of all email opens.

For many people, digital communication is their primary form of communication. Across every industry, including the security industry, the digital component has continued to grow, thrive, and ultimately take over. It’s no longer that digital communication is a driving force behind relevant businesses; instead, it is the force.

And it is a force you can harness to grow your impact, and your business.

Remember, without your thoughtleadership, your potential customers don’t know what they don’t know and therefore have less motivation to act. With email, you own your contact list and have direct access to your current and potential customers whenever and wherever with far less expenditure than any other mode of marketing. This provides the opportunity to tap into that powerful channel to present your offerings in an informative way as often as is needed.

This isn’t just something you should do— it is something that your potential customers expect as part of the consumer experience. Because of this, you can use the opportunity to stay top of mind by providing real value through information-rich and actionable content. Does it really make a difference? Absolutely. It specifically influences 81% of Millennials and 57% of Baby Boomers ages 55 and older to make a purchase (Gartner).

Our advice? Make email marketing a priority. Build your email list and create and share great content. Do these things and you will be connecting personally and powerfully with your potential customers.

A Look Ahead: The Future Will Be Monitored Are you prepared?

By Matt Narowski, President, Bold Group

The act of monitoring and alerting has evolved throughout our history. It used to be that we monitored and notified about fairly straightforward events: when a fire broke out, we alerted the fire department; if a tornado was coming, we sounded the siren.

Today, there is a proliferation of smartphones. IoT devices are connected to everything. Our thermostats, refrigerators, and more – all monitor different types of events and produce an amazing amount of data. Social media and an “always-on” society produce massive amounts of content. We are also dealing with a global pandemic, the likes of which we haven’t seen in more than 100 years.

With the technology we have available today, we are able to monitor most anything. Any action that creates an event can be monitored, and we can collect data, alert someone about it and track a response. This is all still very fragmented, however, as legacy and modern systems need some way to talk to each other, and the technology continues to advance quickly.

All of this expansion in systems, devices and data creates significant opportunity for integrators to find new, innovative ways to help customers monitor and track data for health management, personal safety and property protection.

In the short term, monitoring will be incredibly helpful as we continue to navigate COVID-19. Advancements in this area are already evolving very quickly. The ability to monitor crowds with temperature-sensing cameras as people enter a public space, create an event when someone has a high temperature, and then dispatch responders accordingly will help to keep the general public safe. Add to that the fact that more than 80% of Americans now own a smartphone, and it’s possible to leverage location data and artificial intelligence (AI) to track where people may have had first contact with the virus, as well as notify others who may have been exposed.

On the property protection and personal safety side of things, as the world becomes more and more wireless, we are able to monitor more devices such as vehicles and home monitoring devices that we couldn’t monitor before because we would have needed a hardwire connection. For instance, if we were to monitor vehicles using GPS sensors, we would be able to find the perpetrator in a hit-and-run situation. In homes, we previously only had wired alarm devices, whereas now we are able to place wireless sensors and video cameras throughout a home that sense movements and send an alert to a homeowner’s smartphone.

Video monitoring in and of itself is evolving and providing additional opportunity for integrators. Proactive monitoring combines traditional video monitoring with AI to analyze motion and determine threats and deter a crime from happening by sending an alert to not only a live operator, but it can also sound an alarm at the scene, warning the intruder and likely sending them away.

In addition, now that there is so much data we can collect through monitoring, rather than focusing only on monitoring for events and delivering notifications, we’ll be monitoring data in order to make important decisions. With AI becoming more and more

Latest Trends in DIY Security and Home Controls Systems

These systems are ushering in new value propositions

By Elizabeth Parks, President, Parks Associates

Security systems with monitoring are and remain the platinum standard for delivering safety and security at home, but with more alternatives available to consumers, they have multiple factors to balance when deciding what to buy to feel safe at home. New research from Parks Associates finds 60% percent of US broadband households feel safe enough with a professionally monitored home security system, but 55% feel “safe enough” with a selfmonitored home security system. Additionally, 4652% of US broadband households feel “safe enough” with just one security-focused smart home device, such as a smart door lock or smart doorbell. This baseline feeling of security increases as more devices are added to the bundle, with a bundle including an all-in-one camera and an outdoor light fixture with a camera as the most appealing. This finding creates a serious challenge to the traditional home security industry because consumers can weigh the value of safety and security with the cost savings of these smart home devices versus a monitored system. Consumers identify security systems as providing the strongest sense of “safe enough” security, but these systems are the least

appealing when price is considered. Additionally, as more players from the CE industry enter the DIY security space, they bring an expertise in product design that improves ease-of-use and attractiveness in smart home products. This emphasis on user experience puts pressure on legacy security manufacturers and service providers to deliver solutions and systems that meet or exceed this higher bar, adding new value propositions, while still keeping costs low.

A key benefit that security providers can deliver is centralized control and a unified experience. That would also open new opportunities to sell and service home control systems and interactive services. Currently, 18% of US broadband households have a home control system, and the majority are integrated into a home security system, which highlights the success of the security channel in promoting the value proposition of home systems.

Right now the conversion of legacy security subscribers to interactive security services that support smart home automation is driving this increase in home control systems.

AI is becoming more and more sophisticated. One example of this is the ability to monitor social media for signs of hotspots for crime, or even civil unrest based on the data available and the content being created. This advance notice can help government agencies and other businesses that may be affected be prepared and take precautions. We will also be monitoring data itself, watching systems to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive files and information.

A lot of this monitoring technology and AI capability is in place today and is being leveraged on a small scale. But there is software today that is capable of monitoring any kind of event, so as we see technology continue to improve and the associated costs of creating monitoring programs come down, we’ll see greater adoption among organizations of all sizes. Of course, there is the danger in the misuse of these technologies, and personal freedom and privacy laws will be part of the navigation process.

And that’s where integrators come in. It’s now up to the industry to stay ahead of the advancements, understand the trends and deliver the best possible solutions to ensure that event monitoring is seamless and effective, and provides value to both the organization and the end customer. How can we help different industries protect their assets? How can we help integrate AI into video in different ways to respond to threats even more quickly? What data do our customers have available that we can monitor to help predict changes that affect manufacturing? There are so many possibilities and it’s up to us to get creative in finding ways to identify events, monitor for them and deliver meaningful notifications that protect the valuable assets of people and property. while adoption of DIY home control systems independent of security has remained flat. This pattern of adoption could change as more households acquire multiple devices, but now most smart home owners use multiple apps to control their devices. As they add more devices, they also add more apps, which can quickly become cumbersome and unmanageable. Consumer segments will start to seek out solutions that can consolidate control and deliver a simple, unified experience. This is a new area of opportunity where the security industry can deliver not only safety and security benefits but also convenience and a better end-user experience.
