Advanced Postgraduate Studies at Cardiff School of Art & Design Postgraduate Certificate in Professional and Research Skills: Art & Design The programme offers a comprehensive introduction to the range of methods, strategies and debates that can apply to art and design professional practice and research. It is built around the four key areas of: professional practice; research methods; research design; and the criticality that is essential for the generation of knowledge. The programme is ideal for artists and designers who want to develop a research proposal or a professional intervention project based on their practice. The course runs annually from September to December. It is normally taught on a Wednesday but can be taken via the University’s virtual learning environment at any time in the academic year.
Practice-Based Masters and Professional Doctorates for Artists Master of Fine Art (MFA) This programme is designed to fit the requirements of contemporary professional artists. The aim is to help students develop and strengthen their existing practice within a critical academic context through a negotiated programme of learning with the support of highly skilled staff and technicians. Graduates of the MFA programme are well placed to continue to pursue a career within the field of contemporary visual art. Professional Doctorate: Art The Professional Doctorate is a research degree programme, designed around the concept of change agency, and is intended for professionals who wish to make a step-change in the way their organization operates. The programme is at the same level as a PhD, but it has a different objective. Whereas a PhD makes a contribution to knowledge, the Professional Doctorate develops new professional practice. As well as enabling professionals within organizations to bring about change, the Professional Doctorate is also open to lone practitioners who can contribute to professional practice through supervision by a suitably qualified mentor. The Professional Doctorate in Art is intended for professionals who wish to create a step-change, for example, in the performance of art institutions, such as museums, galleries and funding councils, or alternatively through art practices as they intersect with or contribute to professional contexts, e.g. benefits to a company from an artist-in-residence scheme can be the subject of the study. Similarly, an artist’s own practice can be addressed through a professional doctorate.

As well as enabling professionals within organizations to bring about change, the Professional Doctorate is also open to lone practitioners who can contribute to professional practice through supervision by a suitably qualified mentor. The Professional Doctorate in Design is intended for professionals who wish to create a step-change in the performance of: design companies and consultancies; design practices, as they intersect with or contribute to wider professional or industrial contexts, e.g. through commissioner–client relationships; or a designer’s own practice. Professional Doctorate Ecological Building Practices This award is intended for professionals who wish to create a step change in the performance of: ecological and sustainable practice in the built and natural environment professions, such as architecture, building and construction, planning, development, engineering, surveying, biodiversity and ecology, industrial production and manufacturing design; or other professions whose work can or could relate specifically to an ecological or sustainable built and natural environment.
