ILLUSTRATION BA (HONS) UCAS Code: W220 Entry requirements: Minimum Tariff: 300 We believe illustration is a speaking art: it arises from a need to communicate beyond words and an empathetic desire to influence and enlighten others. Its ancient languages originate in gesture and extend from drawing and print to encompass sound, moving image, 3D modelling and more recent technologies including the digital, virtual, haptic and simulated. Illustration’s spheres of influence extend across the art school and outwards, to science and medicine, psychology, literature, education, theatre, politics, commerce: the list goes on. It has become a critical discipline for the 21st Century, connecting historically established practice with contemporary visual enquiry and technological experimentation. At Cardiff, we are pioneering ambitious developments in teaching, practice and research. The academic team includes practicing illustrators and researchers, experienced in editorial and fine art illustration, animation, visual facilitation and interdisciplinary arts education. We lead in teaching narrative form, and aesthetically driven approaches connecting art, science and technology, rhetoric and forecasting, information and memory. Our research interests include experimental drawing, visualising abstract thought, and humour. We are cofounders of Illustration Research, which has curated three international symposia: Shadow Play (Cardiff 2010), Illustration and Writing (Manchester 2011) and The Function of Folk (Kracow 2012). Science, Imagination and the Illustration of Knowledge takes place at the Oxford University Museums in November 2013. We are members of the editorial panel of the new Journal of Illustration (Intellect, 2013) and are developing a range of commercial and artistic outreach projects with partners outside academia.

As a force for good, illustration can shed light, heal, reconcile and attempt to explain. It also has free rein to pose problems and speak cryptically. At CSAD we are resistant towards the anaesthetic image, preferring work which questions and disrupts conventional thinking. To this end, we believe cautionary and prophetic idioms offer the illustrator exciting scope for comic and tragic expression beyond the mundane. CSAD Illustration offers inspiring contexts for students to apply their imagination and develop the skills and confidence to operate as creative professionals. BA students are encouraged to evolve a distinct voice, technical range and intellectual stance. This is no style school: we encourage purposeful output so that our graduates can thrive in challenging and complex working environments. Across the degree course, practical projects and workshops vary in length and purpose, offering authorial scope and editorial challenge. We aim to foster critical and creative breadth, experimental curiosity and an enlarged understanding of illustration’s contexts and purposes. All students are encouraged to engage with live briefs, ranging from competitions to residencies and exhibitions. There is a strong emphasis on group tutorial teaching and interactive seminars, enhanced by ‘Muses’ and workshops by professionals working within and beyond the discipline. We aim to equip graduates to create independent practices and to serve as key players and leading lights in publishing, film, animation, theatre, fine art, new media, and emerging fields.

YOUR PLACE AT CSAD Meeting applicants is important to us. We like to show you around, answer your questions and talk to you about your work and aspirations. CARDIFF SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN

WHY CARDIFF SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN? BECAUSE YOU WANT TO IMMERSE YOURSELF IN YOUR PASSION FOR ART & DESIGN

BECAUSE YOU WANT TO STUDY WITH LEADING ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS

BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BUILD A LONG AND REWARDING ART & DESIGN CAREER

Your studies are built around three fundamental aspects of what it is to be an Artist, Maker, or Designer: your unique skills; your creative ideas; and your ability to contextualise these in a professional situation.

You need to be among people who can help you to develop. Our entrance expectations (UCAS 300pts) and rigorous, but friendly, interview processes create an expert community of students who are serious about their studies in art and design. If you are lucky enough to win a place with us, you will join other imaginative, curious and astute student artists, makers and designers in our studios. Each studies a programme designed to put them at the centre of their experience, with opportunities to travel and explore ideas in real depth.

You will study three modules a year and you will only have a single formal assessment for each at the end of each year of study. You can keep developing your work and keep improving it throughout the year. This is what professional artists and designers do, so it’s what we do too. Our University is rated in the top ten for employability in the UK and it is no surprise. We work closely with design companies and arts and maker organisations and with the professional art and design community. We have options for you to develop a business, to gain work experience or even to bring your skills to a community project. You can choose to deliver a detailed business plan, rather than a research dissertation, in your third year of study.

A third of your studies are about developing core skills and techniques and about identifying what makes your personal creative identity valuable, unique and different. At least 50% of your studies will be delivered through teaching. We believe it is important that you are taught in studios and workshops by academic and technical experts who will give you the individual attention you need to build a sustainable career. A third of your studies are about exploring how and why and if the world came to be as it is and how it might be rethought or re-imagined. At Cardiff School of Art & Design you can choose to develop a way of thinking that suits you best, by choosing your history and theory seminar group. Each of these is lead by brilliant historians philosophers and theoreticians. The other third of your studies are about collaboration and exploration. You have the chance to explore outside of the University, to form life-long collaborations or even business partnerships. We also offer opportunities to work with our research groups, to work with an employer or a voluntary organisation, to travel and study in Europe, India, Korea, Australia or America or even to build your own business or creative professional practice.

Aside from being highly qualified and expert lecturers, our staff are leading researchers and practicing artists and designers. Cardiff School of Art & Design is the home of a number of international standard research departments. You will have the opportunity to work on many of these research projects and even to publish your own research before you graduate. BECAUSE YOU WANT EXCELLENT ART & DESIGN STUDIOS AND TECHNOLOGIES Professional artists and designers need excellent studios and workshops and that’s what we provide. We have designed a proper place to do art and design. Come to one of our visit days and see what we mean when we say our new building is an ideas and creative factory, with extensive workshops and resources. You can use almost everything and anything we have available from digital stitch and plaster moulding to our metal foundry or our rapid prototyping workshops. We are also home to the only MIT FabLab in a UK University. Come to one of our open days and see what we mean.

All of our Undergraduate programmes can be extended to study up to Masters level as an MDes or MFA (Professional Masters), MA (Academic and Creative Masters) or MPhil (Research Masters). All students who get a 2.1 degree or above are guaranteed a place on one of our Masters programmes. BECAUSE YOU WANT A LIFE BEYOND ART & DESIGN TOO We are in Cardiff, one of the best student cities in Europe with great value accommodation and enough malls, small shops, arcades, restaurants, pubs and clubs to last a lifetime. Cardiff is close enough to make a day trip to London possible and within reach of the Brecon Beacon mountains and the surf beaches of the Gower. Cardiff is home to design and architecture companies and has the studios of artists and crafts people. Our University has excellent sports facilities. In Cardiff School of Art & Design, we have a thriving social life of our own with subject societies and clubs and of course, frequent exhibitions and evening seminars in the bar.
