ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Architecture is an artistic expression that has the ability to translate from paper into three-dimensional space. It is an expression of human relationships and should be one that is continually seeking to improve quality of life by introducing innovative methods and practices. It has the ability to protect and shelter human beings becoming a free standing element that has a life of its own. A building is brought to life by the people who inhabit and interact within it, making human experience through architecture an integral piece that becomes part of the whole. I believe in a process that uses critical thinking and intelligent problem-solving made possible by the layering of information, in order to create designs that incorporate and achieve a clear understanding of all aspects of the project. The integration of elements such as circulation, form, function, space, materiality, and natural environment start dictating the design direction and form a strong relationship between humans and the building itself. Architect’s have the responsibility to have people and community’s best interest at heart, always striving to create designs that look to improve quality of life of current but most importantly future generations to come. As architecture continues changing over time, I believe it’s important to form a collaborative relationship with it’s evolving quality as it promises to open up the doors to new opportunities that will continue to improve architecture and people’s lives. Gas Station Charette Crista Saravia |06

“Located in New York City, this gas station has the ability to articulate itself as a building, blend in with the context, and becomes a unique element in order to capture people’s attention from the dynamic surroundings.” Crista Saravia |08
Inspiration for this project came from the context of New York, an analysis and understanding of the city’s dynamic movement, density, and vivid character. Form exploration models helped inform the design direction to be followed for a gas station that would have the ability to stand out, and at the same time integrate with the surrounding buildings. Therefore, the outcome was a simple and lightweight design that creates a contrast from the vivid and dense context, while integrating the dynamic quality of New York City’s movement and life.

“A building that symbolizes the Government’s transparency towards the country giving the people a sense of security, honesty and an emphasis on democracy. Integration of natural elements such as water, light and landscape start to dictate the importance of human interaction with the surrounding site as well as with the building itself. Crista Saravia |14
Located in Chandigarh, India this project seeks to utilize the integration of nature, paths, mosaic and unification into the architecture in order to create a design that caters to the needs of the diverse user groups utilizing the spaces. These elements served to shape the form and function of the individual spaces, but also to enhance human experience through the architecture.

nOVo Hotel Crista Saravia |24

“Located in Santa Monica, California at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and 2nd Street, noVo hotel’s design was created with the idea of making a statement in the area. The hotel’s program was developed to cater to the young and sophisticated user group, providing them with spaces that are unique and refined. The form and placement was inspired by important view points on the site and its surrounding context. “ Crista Saravia |26
Research was conducted on private and public spaces looking to analyze the difference in human experience and interaction within each. This was particularly important in the development of the project, defining the character of the individual spaces throughout the hotel. The interplay of light, materiality, circulation, form, and function contributed to the creation of the distinctive characteristics of each of the spaces, as well as to the cohesive quality being carried throughout the hotel.

“Re-vitalize, Re-connect, Re-emphasize the boulevard, park , and marina... Three parts united into one elemental network. Using view, path, place, water, and green to transform Lockwood Dr. into a main boulevard.

How do we repair the current urban fabric, without disturbing transportation connection? Site analysis started identifying the key problems of the area, which served to inform the design direction and proposal for this project. Looking at the main transportation routes, bodies of water, view corridors, and natural areas started to dictate the problem area. Crista Saravia |42

The proposal for the revitalization of the Charleston Waterfront layers the elements of view, path, place, water, and green, and creates a unified design that celebrates the city’s character through people’s interaction with the water.
Boardwalks around the site allow users to obtain a greater connection with the water and travel from the boulevard towards the waterfront through specific view corridors.

Armani Store Crista Saravia |50
51 | Crista Saravia
“I like fashion you can’t see”- Giorgio Armani The project started developing into an interplay of what can and cannot be seen. Different form exploration models were constructed in order to determine the shapes that best fit and enhance this conceptual idea. Paying close attention to the geometric folds in Armani’s neckline, window display geometry started to evolve also shaping floor plan shapes and forms. These floor geometries started developing different view planes inside the building, which enhance the conceptual idea.”
Crista Saravia |52
Located at the intersection of Greene St. and Spring St., the site is located inside upscale SoHo District, one of the more established locations for fashion studios outside the Garment District. Location plays a very important role in the design of this project, since the building is placed in such a populated high-end fashion retail area. Therefore, the design needs to be innovative and creative, original and unique, yet it has to follow the neighboring building’s context.
53 | Crista Saravia
The entrance of the store was intended to make a statement utilizing the different floor plans, their voids, and the stairs to create a dynamic atmosphere.
Armani’s designs include the use of very delicate lines and fabrics which contribute to the creation of simple yet elegant and refined clothing. The focus is placed on the structure of the clothing, which isn’t visible, and how the clothes have the ability to shape the human body. Simplicity in the clothes is very important, but attention is placed to the details that are incorporated into the garments. The interplay of classicism, purism, and modernism help create collections that never grow old and last a lifetime.
Crista Saravia |54
The entry’s geometry is created by the intersection of the windows displays meeting at the corner of the building. This provides for emphasis helping to draw people into the store. The procession from the sides of the building meeting at the corner create a sense of excitement for the walker, as they can start to see what’s happening inside.
