The issue also showcases the inaugural Best in Business for the city of Pueblo, thanks to a new partnership with the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. At the CSBJ, we believe in celebrating the business community — highlighting everything that is right about Colorado Springs, the economy and its businesses. This year, there’s so much to be proud of: Unemployment is at record lows, and vacancy rates for commercial real estate are also low. The cybersecurity industry is on an upswing; the Springs manufacturing base seems poised to work cooperatively to take on challenges that stem from automation and outsourcing. Retail and restaurant growth are strong, and the city seems to be avoiding much of the retail upheaval among national chains that is plaguing cities in the rest of the country. At the same time, our entrepreneurial ecosystem is thriving and the tech sector is gaining ground. The good news doesn’t mean there aren’t concerns. We still need to widen Interstate 25 between Monument and Castle Rock; we need to invest in infrastructure. We need strong leadership to bring all sides to the table to make decisions on how to address stormwater drainage, wildfire prevention and other pressing concerns.

Eric St. Pierre and Jeff Walker moved to Colorado Springs in 1993 with the dream of starting a business, and today they have 70 employees and 25 moving trucks to serve the Springs and Pueblo. Two Men and a Truck is a local success story, helping its customers complete more than 6,000 moves per year, and winning this category four years in a row. “That’s a great honor,” said St. Pierre. “The Business Journal is a highly respected newspaper in Colorado Springs. Local metal product manufacturing company Springs Fabrication Inc., just a two-man operation in 1986, now has inroads with companies nationwide and boasts more than 200 employees. “We focus on taking on highly technical, challenging work. Our customer base is throughout the U.S. and outside the country as well,” said Tom Neppl, president of the company. “We are locally owned and have been here a long time. While technology has been blamed for creating social and emotional divides between many school-aged children, The Colorado Springs School focuses on bringing them together. Voted the Best Private School, the institution wants to be the total package, according to Amaya Firestone, the school’s advancement and communications assistant. The school recently adopted the Yale Ruler Program, which helps students develop social and emotional literacy. School leaders encourage accountability. As the school’s students get older, they’re exposed to a variety of leadership and team-building experiences, including camping expeditions where they handle all the details, including making dinner outdoors (even in the rain, if necessary).

The faculty must be doing something right. CSS alumni, once in college, are the ones setting high expectations and taking leadership roles in their classes. And Firestone said their solid educational background often leads them to seek out college faculty for extra time and immersion. “We’re not teaching to the test,” she said. “When a faculty member sees a student interested in something, we [often] bring in more resources for the student to capture that passion.”

Patty Jewett Golf Course is “the Cheers of golf — everybody knows everybody’s name,” said Golf Division Superintendent Pat Gentile. “It’s a very friendly atmosphere.” The 300 acres of courses, some of the oldest west of the Mississippi River, was deeded to the city by William Jewett in 1898. Gentile said the history, location, mature tree lines and sweeping views lead a lot of people to think it’s a country club. In fact, it is a municipal golf course open to the public and — averaging 110,000 nine-hole rounds annually — one of the state’s busiest. Gentile emphasized Patty Jewett is an enterprise of the city, and receives no revenue from taxpayers and no subsidies from the city of Colorado Springs. “Our fees come from our users, so that is a big thing — we pay our own way. We pay for our water, utilities, payroll, accounting; we pay for every bit of our existence as a golf course,” he said, adding the Best In Business recognition is an honor. “It’s nice being able to provide a low-cost golf course facility in town for our citizens, that they can be proud of, because some people think of municipal courses as rundown or beginner places, but [we have] … the typical things you’d see at more private or resort-type places.” He pointed to the course’s bar, restaurant and pro shop, the maintenance and environmental protection efforts, and the views of Pikes Peak. “We always say what a gift William Jewett gave to the city back then; it’s amazing the way it’s evolved,” Gentile said. “I think if he came back today, I think he’d be happy with what he’d see.”

Best Tourist Attraction Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Unique experiences, including hand-feeding resident giraffes, help to make Cheyenne Mountain Zoo the region’s best tourist attraction. It’s not only the variety of experiences and animals on-site (including the aforementioned giraffes, an 18-member herd) that help separate the zoo from its peers, it’s also the charitable contributions to animals the organization has made. “We’re proud of the work we do here,” said Jenny Koch, the zoo’s marketing director. Some of that work includes educating people about the animals and, as a result, many help protect those animals in the wild. The zoo is a nonprofit and doesn’t receive tax support. As a result, it relies on the community for success. In the most recent fiscal year, the zoo raised more than $485,000 for conservation through its Quarters for Conservation program, which donates 75 cents from every admission to the program. Wild elephants, rhinos, giraffes, orangutans and amphibians have all benefited. The zoo has also contributed to on-site breedand-release programs for black-footed ferrets and Wyoming toads, both of which were thought extinct but are now thriving in the wild. “We love our community and it feels great to know that they love what we do as well,” said Koch.

Best Coffee Shop Dutch Bros.

With four locations around Colorado Springs, Dutch Bros. has become a community staple, competing both with giants like Starbucks and with small, local coffee shops around the city. What sets the company apart? According to its founders, it’s all about sticking to its values. “Coffee is what we do,” the website said. “But it’s not who we are. Here at Dutch Bros., we live by three main core values. One cannot be sacrificed for another. All must work together to provide the best experience possible. We may be a coffee company, but we are in the relationship business.” Those values are: quality, service and speed. But what about that name? The franchise was created by two brothers, Dane and Travis Boersma, who are of Dutch descent. The family spent generations in dairy farming, but say government regulations forced them to sell the cows and make a living some other way. The brothers bought a double-headed espresso machine, “threw open the barn doors and started experimenting with 100 pounds of beans and a rockin’ stereo.” That was 1992 — and the experiment paid off. Today, Dutch Bros. is the largest privately held drive-thru coffee company with more than 260 locations in seven states.

Old Colorado City Farmers Market

One thing sets the Old Colorado City Farmers Market apart from the others around El Paso County — it only sells produce, prepared foods like sausage and preserves, baked goods and a touch of honey. “We’re not a flea market,” said Frank Schmidt, who started the Old Colorado City Farmers Market more than 30 years ago. “So many of them now, that’s all they are — they sell everything. We only sell local fruits, vegetables, baked goods.” Schmidt himself uses the market to sell his locally produced honey. He said the business model makes sense and is wildly popular. “I think it’s the best one in town,” he said. “And we have people from all over the city come down here. We appreciate the vendors, we appreciate the assistance of the Old Colorado City Association, and we appreciate our customers.” Open in Bancroft Park on Colorado Avenue, the farmers market operates every Saturday from June through October, and is also known as the Pikes Peak Farmers Market. According to the market’s website, Schmidt has been selling his products since 1979 — through many changes. For instance, in 2013, he had to move vendors off South 24th Street and into Bancroft Park — something he says people had to get used to.

Best Food Truck PigLatin

Andres Velez describes PigLatin as “a food truck that offers pork as our centerpiece — so it’s not necessarily Colombian food or Cuban food or Asian food — as long as it’s got pork, we’ll make something original out of it.” This is PigLatin’s second Best In Business win in two years and Velez, who owns PigLatin with wife Patricia, says they appreciate the community recognition of their hard work, and they’re excited to be part of the Springs’ burgeoning food scene. “It’s a growing and changing market — a lot of people are open to new things now. Ten years ago when I first got here, there were very limited options; now the food scene has really taken off, so it’s great to be a part of that scene,” he said.

Velez said since last year’s win, PigLatin has started offering delivery via UberEATS, and they are on the home stretch in their search for a brick-and-mortar location — or two. “We’re looking downtown for sure, and maybe another location in the north area, maybe something on the Westside,” he said. “I think we’re zeroing in on the spots now so we can offer better food, more food and more options.”

Licensed in 1951, Colorado College-owned 91.5 KRCC was the first noncommercial FM station in Colorado. In 1984, the station became Colorado’s third National Public Radio member station. KRDO-TV, which first went on the air on Sept. 21, 1953, was one of the three original television stations in Colorado Springs. Harry Hoth, a then-junior employee of KRDO Radio, persuaded the owners of the company to create a TV station. Hoth acquired the station in 1961 and it remained in the family for 45 years. Hoth, who served as Colorado Springs mayor from 1963-67, made sure the station served the city’s business community with timely, accurate in-depth coverage. That tradition continues with the current owners, the St. Joseph, Mo. Best Urban Redevelopment Ivywild School

After decades of losing many of the city’s most iconic structures — the Burns Opera House and the second iteration of the Antlers Hotel are widely considered the city’s greatest losses — the residents of Colorado Springs have begun standing up for history with a mission to recycle it. Perhaps the most successful example of this new wave of urban redevelopment is the Ivywild School. In 2012, a group of local businessmen purchased the school that for 93 years provided educations to thousands of local children, and they quickly recreated the space as one that would remain at the core of the Ivywild neighborhood community. “The Ivywild School project demonstrates what can be achieved with reuse and renovation on a large scale,” said Ivywild spokesperson Steve Oliveri. “The Ivywild School represents the true value of urban redevelopment, holding both commercial opportunity and historical integrity in mind at the same time.” Four years after opening, it appears their ambitions have become a great success. The former school now houses a cocktail and espresso bar, bakery, butcher, whiskey distillery, an events venue and ample retail space and is home to Bristol Brewing Co. (one of the area’s largest breweries). Charles Sole changed the name of his award-winning coffee shop from The Daily Grind to the Hanging Tree Café in 2016. Sole, who has had family in Pueblo for the past century, said the name better reflects the historic roots of the business’ neighborhood. “The hanging tree used to be called the Old Monarch or Big Tree,” Sole said. “It stood on this block for 388 years before it was cut down. It’s Colorado’s oldest known historic landmark.” Sole and his 13 employees have easy access to the plaque that commemorates the site of the Hanging Tree when they aren’t catering to the city’s coffee addicts. “We’re open early to late seven days a week,” Sole said. “We serve everything from espresso to sandwiches and breakfast burritos. We also do a lot of vegan and vegetarian stuff.” A lot of love goes into the food at The Hanging Tree, which also takes home the award for Best Pueblo Breakfast Restaurant. Sole said much of the food is made from scratch, including soups, baked goods and the shop’s pork green chile. He said one thing that sets his business apart is its focus on sustainable business practices. “We are totally green. We recycle everything and use recycled products,” he said. “We’re also very community based — we do musical events with local and out-of-town musicians and show a lot of artwork. We also have a community garden out back. Smokin D’s Barbecue, the winner in this year’s Best Pueblo Food Truck category, is a family affair. Owned by Debbie Davidson, her husband Dennis Saldo, son Timmothy Ramirez, and his partner Nick Beattie, the truck has served “Southern Colorado barbecue” in the Steel City for just over a year. “These are all original recipes and we make everything from scratch,” Davidson said. “We’ve all had lots of barbecue in the South and the East, and we brought those ideas here, but we’re not like a Kansas City or Memphis barbecue.” Davidson said, for instance, their pulled pork is topped with a seared pork jelly and, since the truck recently began serving breakfast at 6 a.m. during the week, even the cinnamon roll flour is smoked for a unique flavor. Davidson, a special education teacher when not in the truck, has been in Colorado for about five years. Explaining she has a son who serves in the U.S. Marine Corps., Davidson said the truck offers a 30 percent discount to police, firefighters and military personnel. “We have great respect for what they do. They deserve to be honored,” she said. Best Pueblo Pet Services Company Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (Pueblo Animal Services)

There is no denying that Coloradans love their pets, but that doesn’t mean they all get the care they deserve — and that’s where the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region comes in. Despite its name, the HSPPR is incredibly active not just in the Colorado Springs area, but in Pueblo as well. According to its 2016 annual report, the organization’s Pueblo Animal Services were responsible for the intake of 5,895 dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and rabbits last year — and 4,332 of those were successfully rehomed. “Since being invited to manage animal services and animal control in Pueblo in September of 2002, Pueblo Animal Services has made incredible strides in helping reduce pet overpopulation and increasing the quality of life for pets in Pueblo,” said Julie Justman, director of Pueblo Animal Services for HSPPR. Just like the HSPPR in Colorado Springs, the organization’s Pueblo branch offers services ranging from pet adoption to minor procedures such as microchip implantation and low-cost spay and neutering services. The Pueblo division also hosts events, such as the annual Pueblo Pet Check, during which animal owners can bring their pets in for a free wellness exam, as well as to receive rabies and distemper vaccinations. “Our staff and volunteers are passionate about helping animals and are truly dedicated to making Pueblo a better place for people and pets,” said Justman. “We are so thankful to be serving the Pueblo community every day.”

Best Pueblo Place for a Business Lunch Gus’s Place

Throughout the past eight decades, Gus’s Place has become a historic staple in the Pueblo food-and-beverage scene — serving everyone from steelworkers to business executives. “We’re the oldest bar in Pueblo,” owner Gino Mittino told the Business Journal in March. “We were the first bar to get a liquor license after Prohibition, and we’ve been continuously open since then. That makes 84 years — not bad!” The tavern is famous for its “Dutch Lunches,” which are made with locally sourced lunch meats, provolone, pickles, peppers and freshly baked bread from the nearby Zoelsmann’s Bakery, which has been open for 123 years. Gus’s came of age in the days of Colorado Fuel & Iron, which supplied the tavern with a consistent and hungry crowd of millworkers. “There were three shifts a day,” according to Mittino, “and I think there were 10,000-12,000 workers at the mill. Now, the blast furnaces are long gone, and there are just 1,000 workers or so, melting down scrap.” The mill now sits in a shadow of its former glory, but the same can’t be said for the historic tavern, which is listed on the Pueblo Register of Historic Places. The Register listing states: “1201 Elm Street has functioned as an important community gathering place since 1892. The building served as … an early AfricanAmerican church, and later as a Mesa Mission for immigrants … between 19101920. The current use as a neighborhood pub dates from 1934, the first year after Prohibition, and demonstrates the neighborhood and community’s dedication to this distinctive place.”

Best Pueblo Place for a Large Conference Pueblo Convention Center

Complacency isn’t the Pueblo Convention Center’s thing. Less than 20 years after construction was completed in 1997 on the 54,000-square-foot events venue, Pueblo leaders have led a charge to build a $23.4 million expansion that will nearly double its size, adding a 28,000-square-foot exhibit hall, an 18,000-square-foot sports performance center anchored by the Professional Bull Riders, a 500-space parking garage and a pedestrian “sky bridge.” The Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority voted unanimously in March to fund the project and subsequently issued a Request for Proposals seeking a design-build team for the expansion. Those amenities would add to the already accommodating facility, which currently houses 21,000 square feet of meeting space, an exhibit hall, a ballroom and lounge areas. The building, which is operated by Pennsylvania-based event venue management firm Spectra (owned by Comcast through its subsidiary Comcast Spectacor), is Pueblo’s preeminent location for business meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows and even weddings. KOA News Radio — also known as “the Blowtorch of the West” — has been a staple along the Front Range since General Electric first began broadcasting from a 5,000-watt tower in Denver 93 years ago. When Richard Warner began selling his burgers in front of his wife’s Pueblo bakery during the 2007 Chile & Frijoles Festival, he had no idea his roasted chile-infused recipe would soon take the region by storm. “They became pretty popular,” said Bingo Burger Creative Director Ken Stacks. “So, after a few years, Richard decided he was on to something.” Ten years and many happy customers is all the proof he needed. music on Friday and Saturday nights. “The goal is to make Bingo a fun place to be for the community, and not just a restaurant,” Stacks said. “And so far, I think we’re succeeding. We seem to have fiercely loyal clientele and it’s a great place to hang out.” With community popularity and economic success at both the Pueblo and Colorado Springs locations, Stacks said that he wouldn’t be surprised if the business soon grows to more locations. “Both have been growing like gangbusters, so my guess is more Bingos are on the way,” he said.

However, according to Sole Loomis, co-owner of Alter Image Salon and Spa in Pueblo, a positive reputation throughout the region is what has led to the business’ success. Alter Image Salon and Spa offers a variety of beauty services, including haircuts and coloring, waxing, full manicures and pedicures, spray tans, chemical peels, eyelash extensions, facials, full body scrubs and microdermabrasion. “You have to hire slowly, make sure you have a great team and great talent to back you up,” Loomis said. The salon and spa, located off downtown Pueblo’s Main Street, has been open for five years. One Facebook user who wrote a review about Alter Image’s staff and services said, “Everyone here is so kind and talented! I’ve been going here for a little while and it’s always been affordable and I’ve always left happy.” “It’s not the owners that did it, it’s the total team. It’s an honor to us that we’ve got such a great reputation with the town and the Springs,” Loomis said.
