Welcome to the 2017 Best in Business!
C
overing nearly 100 categories from restaurants to manufacturers, these are the top businesses as voted by our readers. For the first time, this year we are dedicating an entire issue of the CSBJ to our Best in Business. The issue also showcases the inaugural Best in Business for the city of Pueblo, thanks to a new partnership with the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. The goal of the collaboration is to connect businesses in the two cities, to the economic benefit of both. At the CSBJ, we believe in celebrating the business community — highlighting everything that is right about Colorado Springs, the economy and its businesses. This year, there’s so much to be proud of: Unemployment is at record lows, and vacancy rates for commercial real estate are also low. The cybersecurity industry is on an upswing; the Springs manufacturing base seems poised to work cooperatively to take on challenges that stem from automation and outsourcing. Retail and restaurant growth are strong, and the city seems to be avoiding much of the retail upheaval among national chains that is plaguing cities in the rest of the country. At the same time, our entrepreneurial ecosystem is thriving and the tech sector is gaining ground. The good news doesn’t mean there aren’t concerns. We still need to widen Interstate 25 between Monument and Castle Rock; we need to invest in infrastructure. We need strong leadership to bring all sides to the table to make decisions on how to address stormwater drainage, wildfire prevention and other pressing concerns.
But this edition is dedicated to celebration — and we invite you to read about the businesses our readers believe are the best in the Springs and in Pueblo. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors for Best in Business. Presenting sponsors are: Lockheed Martin, one of the nation’s premier aerospace companies; Kaiser Permanente, providing custom care for businesses and individuals; Peak Structural, a local firm dedicated to quality foundational work; McDivitt Law Firm, a local law firm built on exceptional client service; and Colorado Computer Support, a strategic technical support firm for local businesses. Thanks to their generosity and support of local businesses, the Business Journal can bring you events that celebrate, inform and engage the local community. Our next event is our annual Mayors Panel, featuring the leaders of Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Green Mountain Falls, Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Monument and Fountain. Hear about what keeps them up at night, what their economic plans are and how they plan to work cooperatively to solve issues throughout southern Colorado. It’s Thursday, July 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the DoubleTree Hilton at 1775 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd. Sign up at csbj.com/events. Thank you for reading and subscribing to the Business Journal, supporting quality journalism and engaging in the local community. As a small business, the CSBJ couldn’t be successful without your support and commitment. CSBJ
We believe in celebrating the business community.

Best Law Firm Stinar Zendejas & Gaithe PLLC Colorado Springs-based law firm Stinar Zendejas & Gaithe PLLC supports local small businesses, corporations and individuals through business and legal actions — such as business formation and planning, tax matters, real estate, employment law, nonprofit representation and more. “We try to be a full-service law firm for individuals and small businesses. We try to stand out with clients and try to be in front of their needs,” said Jim Zendejas, partner at the firm. Zendejas said he and Stinar have been doing business together since 2001 and have been proud of the firm’s growth. “Even in a recession time we were still able to grow our firm. We were able to survive and grow,” he said. “We’re now at six lawyers, eight staff members and two interns.” Zendejas’ advice on running a law firm? “Be honest with your clients and, if you know the answer, tell them fairly. If you don’t know the answer, let them know that too. Understand what your firm can and can’t do.”

Best Moving Company Two Men and a Truck
Eric St. Pierre and Jeff Walker moved to Colorado Springs in 1993 with the dream of starting a business, and today they have 70 employees and 25 moving trucks to serve the Springs and Pueblo. Two Men and a Truck is a local success story, helping its customers complete more than 6,000 moves per year, and winning this category four years in a row. “That’s a great honor,” said St. Pierre. “The Business Journal is a highly respected newspaper in Colorado Springs. To win this award again makes us very proud.” St. Pierre worked for the original owner of Two Men and a Truck in Michigan before franchising opportunities became available. All the company’s movers must complete an in-house training program before working in the field. “Colorado Springs has been very good to us,” St. Pierre said. “It all starts with hiring good people, and we try to reward them. We feel like we really brought customer service into the moving business. We try to live by what we call ‘the grandma rule’ — where we try to treat everyone like they’re our grandma. It’s a corporate philosophy but we live it and breathe it.”

ADD STAFF Inc.
Founder, president and owner Cari Shaffer describes ADD STAFF Inc. as “a home team” — the company was founded in Colorado Springs and celebrates its 33rd anniversary this month. “Our edge is the teamwork of 18 in-house staffers and how they dedicate themselves to our client employers, choosing direct hire and temporary employees best suited to meet our clients’ diverse needs,” Shaffer said in an email. “We take our work seriously, as choosing talent for others affects their bottom lines. Studying successful companies for over 33 years in and outside the staffing world, I realize that talent is the key differentiator in all organizations.” Shaffer said everyone at ADD STAFF is “so humbled and appreciative of the loyalty shown from clients, employees and friends” during the past three decades. “This great CSBJ recognition sure brings the smiles to us all!” she said.

Bestway Disposal/Bestway Recycling Inc. Signs like these may look familiar as Bestway has been operating locally since 1950. The disposal and recycling company has been in the Kiemel family since 1967.
Best Waste and Recycling Company Bestway Disposal/Bestway Recycling Inc.
Owned by the Kiemel family since 1967, Bestway — which has been in business locally since 1950 — serves thousands of residents in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and the Fountain Valley. Tom and Phil Kiemel are fourth-generation workers in the disposal business; their father bought Bestway 50 years ago when it had three trucks and a few hundred customers. The company grew along with the Pikes Peak region to become a state-of-the-art rubbish removal and recycling operation. “It is really an honor for the Business Journal readers and our customers to recognize us this way,” said Tom Kiemel. “It’s very gracious of those who voted for us. It’s a reflection of our dedicated staff and their effort, pride and passion for the way they approach their work. We’re an old company, and service is our foundation.”
Kiemel said going the extra mile pays off. “It’s the small things that set us apart,” he said. “Like we’ll knock on the door if a customer forgot to put their trash out. We’ll try to secure the trash receptacle or put it away on a windy day after we empty it. We try to go against the grain of what people expect from their trash company.”

Construction, Design and Engineering Best Aerospace/Defense Company Lockheed Martin
Established in 1965 and employing more than 1,200 in Colorado Springs, Lockheed Martin has had a sizable presence in the community for decades. The company, based in Bethesda, Md., was formed by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta in March 1995. “We’re proud to have been a part of the Colorado Springs community for more than 50 years. In that time, we’ve gained a deep understanding of our customers’ global security missions, developed a world-class team of innovative employees
Best Architectural Firm RTA Architects
You probably know RTA even if you think you don’t. They’re the architectural group behind the University Village Shopping Center, John Adams Elementary School, a St. Francis Medical Center expansion, the new Springs Rescue Mission and the proposed Pikes Peak Summit Complex project. What is it that makes RTA Architects so special? “I think we are a group of friendly, passionate people who love architecture, have chosen Colorado Springs as the place we want to live and practice, and are passionate about making the communities we work in better places through design,” said Stuart Coppedge, principal. “We are very intentional in what we do and always seeking to learn and improve, from the way we welcome and train new employees, to the software we use, to how we measure the success of our projects. We work as hard building relationships with clients as we do designing their buildings and are blessed to have developed strong relationships with many of them through the years. Although we continue to work around the state, we are especially proud of how we are expanding our significant long-term, but lesser-known, presence here in Colorado Springs with several community-focused projects.” Instead of purely focusing on the results of the architectural design process, RTA focuses on what motivates them and defined them as tenets to follow: “Connecting through experience of place. We enhance the lives of the people in our community and foster a vibrant culture. “Ever curious. Ever learning. Ever improving. We promote a culture of innovation through collaboration, creative leadership, and determined exploration. “Purposeful, engaging solutions. We meet every challenge with intentional response and thoughtful craft to enrich lives, inspire and delight.”

Rocky Mountain Group is an engineering firm with offices in Colorado Springs, Monument, Denver, Greeley and Pueblo — as well as locations in Haiti, Iraq, China, Mongolia and South Korea. The firm specializes in architectural and engineering design, and prides itself on its collaboration with clients. “We approach every project with a fresh perspective,” the company’s website said. “No two jobs are ever alike and you deserve to have options provided to you when selecting the appropriate designs for your project. We are open, flexible and professional. “Our ability to generate innovative ideas for your project is not merely a function of the mind, but also a function of three key success behaviors that optimize our abilities to bring forth the perfect solution for you.” Their secrets to success? Open-mindedness, effective communication and creativity. “We have a fundamental core belief that having an open mind to new and creative ideas [is] what makes the difference between a great project and an exceptional project,” the website said. “Since no two projects are ever alike, each one of them will possess [its] own set of high potent and creative solutions.”

GE Johnson Construction Co. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, GE Johnson projects have included the Garden of the Gods Club and Resort expansion (above), the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the Tri-Lakes YMCA.
Best General Contractor GE Johnson Construction Co.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Gilbert Johnson starting his own Colorado Springs-based construction company; a company that has since become one of the region’s most prominent general contractors. GE Johnson Construction Co. has seen much change over a half-century — the firm is larger and more dynamic than ever under the leadership of Gilbert’s son Jim Johnson — but one constant is a commitment to conducting business with quality, integrity and a handshake. “I think my father’s vision was to have the company succeed him,” Jim Johnson recently told the Business Journal, “so I think he would be pleased that we’re still here and that the values that have always been a part of the business still exist today.” GE Johnson has completed projects of all kinds across 14 states: office buildings
like the Plaza of the Rockies and the USOC Headquarters; hotels like The Broadmoor West; hospitals like Penrose Hospital East Tower and the Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus; sports facilities such as the Tri-Lakes YMCA, the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the Holaday Center for athletics at the U.S. Air Force Academy; and educational buildings like Cheyenne Mountain High School and the UCCS Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences.

Best Homebuilder Classic Homes
Since 1989, the Classic Homes team has built more than 11,000 homes in Colorado Springs, Fountain, Falcon and Monument, according to Kim Sandoval, director of corporate marketing. Sandoval said the locally owned company offers a wider selection of floorplans and builds in more neighborhoods than any other builder in the Springs. Classic Homes is notable for the dedication and loyalty of its employees, she said. On average, employees have been with Classic 15 years — and some have worked there since the company was founded. This year Classic Homes ranked third in the nation on Builder magazine’s Top 100 list of “Builders with most productive employees by revenue.”

Best Manufacturing Company Springs Fabrication
Local metal product manufacturing company Springs Fabrication Inc., just a two-man operation in 1986, now has inroads with companies nationwide and boasts more than 200 employees. “We focus on taking on highly technical, challenging work. Our customer base is throughout the U.S. and outside the country as well,” said Tom Neppl, president of the company. “We are locally owned and have been here a long time. We are focused on doing what we can in the community as well as trying to make Colorado Springs a better place.” Neppl said there are three main assets Springs Fabrication values and to which it attributes its success: good employees, good customers and good suppliers.

Best Mechanical/Electrical Firm Olson Plumbing & Heating
Olson Plumbing & Heating opened in 1917 as a one-man operation. This year, the local company will celebrate 100 years in business in the Pikes Peak region. The company is still family-owned and operated, according to its website. “I think that the biggest thing in business is that making money can’t be the most important goal,” said Michael Trapp, president and owner of Olson Plumbing & Heating. “If you have satisfied customers and do the right thing for people, making a profit will follow. A lot of people put making money as their No. 1 goal and they make people mad by not giving an inch on a bill or whatever. You have to make satisfied customers your priority.” Trapp said repeat business and customer relationships are very important to his company, which is why customer satisfaction is a big focus for Olson Plumbing and Heating. “Every business, no matter how big, has problems. It’s how you deal with problems when you have them that makes the difference,” he said. “We go the extra mile to make everybody satisfied.”

Springs Fabrication Perhaps one reason Springs Fabrication was voted Best Manufacturing Company is because of the skilled trade learning opportunities it provides local youth. One example is Springs Fabrication’s partnership with Pikes Peak Community College to create a welding training center.

UCCS rendering
Best University or College UCCS
One of the fastest-growing universities in the state of Colorado, UCCS is a staple in Colorado Springs. The university serves as a resource for local businesses through workforce development and community engagement, says Tom Hutton, spokesman for the University of Colorado campus. “UCCS assists the business, as well as the government and nonprofit sectors, by providing the workforce of the future — employees who have broad skills in critical thinking and problem-solving, as well as specific skill sets that are in high demand,” Hutton said. The university has more than 42,000 alumni, and about two-thirds of them live and work in the Pikes Peak region. Because of its local impact, Hutton said UCCS focuses on diversity and
inclusion as its guiding philosophy. “UCCS values inclusive diversity as a foundation for teaching and scholarship that prepares students, faculty, staff and community members for local and global multicultural realities,” he said. “UCCS serves a diverse, low-income, often first-generation, excellent student body. UCCS focuses on students, their success and the delivery of high-quality education that provides opportunities for their futures.”

Best Private School The Colorado Springs School
While technology has been blamed for creating social and emotional divides between many school-aged children, The Colorado Springs School focuses on bringing them together. Voted the Best Private School, the institution wants to be the total package, according to Amaya Firestone, the school’s advancement and communications assistant. The school recently adopted the Yale Ruler Program, which helps students develop social and emotional literacy. School leaders encourage accountability. As the school’s students get older, they’re exposed to a variety of leadership and team-building experiences, including camping expeditions where they handle all the details, including making dinner outdoors (even in the rain, if necessary).
The faculty must be doing something right. CSS alumni, once in college, are the ones setting high expectations and taking leadership roles in their classes. And Firestone said their solid educational background often leads them to seek out college faculty for extra time and immersion. “We’re not teaching to the test,” she said. “When a faculty member sees a student interested in something, we [often] bring in more resources for the student to capture that passion.”

Best Bank USAA
In 2010, 58 percent of Colorado’s military retiree population resided in El Paso County, according to an El Paso County Public Health Department report. It only makes sense that the consistently top-ranking bank among military families received high marks. “We are passionate advocates for military members and their families. The same core values that guide our military inspire USAA employees to go above and beyond for our members each and every day. … USAA provides a full range of highly competitive financial products and services to the military community and their families. And our world-class employees are personally committed to delivering excellent service and great guidance,” according to the bank’s Company Overview.
USAA recently upped its internal ratings with a pay and benefit increase, and won Top Workplace in the large company division of a Denver Post survey. Is the key to happy customers happy employees? “The mission and purpose of USAA are to help people, not make money for stockholders,” an employee told the Denver Post. “We get to do things a different way.”

Best Financial Adviser
Ent Credit Union
Ent Credit Union is a winner in three categories: Best Credit Union, Best Mortgage Lender and Best Financial Adviser. Ent, the largest credit union in Colorado with $4.93 billion in assets, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The credit union was founded in 1957 on the former Ent Air Force Base, now the site of the Olympic Training Center. The Colorado Springs-based financial institution has about 290,000 members, 29 branch locations and 700 full-time employees. “As a local, community-chartered credit union, Ent is committed to helping our members improve their financial quality of life,” said Ent President and CEO Randy Bernstein. “One of Ent’s core values is to be ‘member-centric,’ which we define as keeping our members’ needs and best interests at the heart of everything we do.” As for winning Best Credit Union, Bernstein said, “We are proud to win this type of recognition from the business community, reflecting the trust our members have in Ent as their local financial partner.” Ent Senior Executive Vice President of Lending and Finance Bill Vogeney thinks being a local company benefits the members when it comes to mortgage lending. “Our goal is to make the home buying — or refinancing — process as straightforward and easy as possible,” Vogeney said. “We underwrite and service our mortgage loans locally. The community’s two severe fires and last year’s hail storm have emphasized that who services the loan may be more important than who actually grants the loan. We do both.” In regard to winning Best Financial Adviser, Ent Executive Vice President of Operations Matt Gendron said: “We try to give our membership unbiased financial advice, whether it be the normal day-to-day checking, savings or consumer mortgage loan activity. A little more specialized would be our investment group, and those folks help our members who are interested in some alternative investment options that we have access to through our broker dealer. “From the investment perspective, we operate under guidelines that we’re going to give our members investment advice — or advice about anything — that’s in their best interest, not in the best interest of the credit union. We think we’re adept enough from a professional perspective to help members understand that we’ll make suggestions but it’s ultimately their decision. If they want to invest, if they want to borrow, we try and help them make an informed decision.”

Best SBA Lender Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo came to Colorado Springs as a result of a merger between San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. and Norwest Bank in 1998. The 1990 Norwest Tower, still the city’s tallest building, was renamed the Wells Fargo Tower in 2000. Although Wells Fargo does not disclose details of its local loans, deposits and customer numbers, it’s clear that the bank has a substantial market share. It operates 13 branches, distributed throughout the city — the most of any bank. “We’ve become one of the nation’s largest financial institutions,” according to the company’s Vision and Values statement, “serving one in three U.S. households and employing approximately one in 600 working Americans.”

Best Auto Dealer Heuberger Subaru Subaru: The official car brand of the state of Colorado. All jokes aside, Subarus have dominated the car market in Colorado Springs for years. At Heuberger Subaru, business has been good enough to maintain steady growth during its 40 years in business. It claims to carry the largest new-car inventory in the United States, and is also home to a full-service repair center, offering work on warranty issues or a simple oil change. Heuberger notes that it’s the largest-volume Subaru dealer in the United States, and that it has received high customer satisfaction ratings because of its special “atmosphere.” “We’re not your traditional car dealership; we strive to be forward-thinking in every interaction we have with our valued customers,” according to its website. “We’re not here to pressure you into buying a car … we believe you should be in the driver’s seat the whole time.”

Best Professional Association Pikes Peak Association of Realtors
It’s a hot market for the Pikes Peak Association of Realtors right now. It’s not a problem though. Although voted Best Professional Association, the homeowner has always been a high priority for PPAR. “We work really, really hard by delivering top-notch services to our members and serving as advocates of homeowners,” said Amy Reid, the organization’s CEO. “We work with other community groups to make sure we have a vibrant and healthy community.” Every local licensee has the option to join the association, which boasts more than 3,400 members in the area. “We’re a very engaged group of Realtors,” said Reid. Happy to receive the nomination, Reid sees it as a testament to the work the association does in the community. With low housing inventory, finding the perfect home may be a bit more of a challenge, but the association’s members are up to the task.

St. Francis Medical Center
The Independence Center
The Independence Center aims “to address the whole person” through self-directed home health care, traditional home health services, independent living and advocacy services, said Michelle West, director of marketing and communications. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, The Independence Center’s mission is “to work with people with disabilities, their families and the community to create independence so all may thrive,” she said. Advocacy services include peer support, skills classes and employment assistance. “Through our independent living center [we offer] all kinds of things that help people get jobs if they can, and help people learn how to get Social Security benefits, for example,” West said. “We have peer support groups for caregivers and for the clients of the home health agencies.” The IC also runs a Certified Nurse Aide school. As well as the ability to address the whole person, West said what sets The IC apart is its status as a local nonprofit that gives back. “A lot of people like that because they know we’re advancing the cause of people with disabilities — even with advocacy that we do at the state level and at the city level,” she said. “That’s probably what separates us from the rest.”

Since St. Francis Medical Center opened in 2008, the community has “just wrapped their arms around it,” said Chris Valentine, marketing and communications director for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. “Our mission is to serve the community and improve the health of the community, so for the folks that we take care of to recognize that great care — that’s what’s important,” he said. “Being recognized by the community is wonderful to us, and something we really value and honor.” Valentine said St. Francis, which together with Penrose Hospital forms Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, has seen significant growth over the past nine years. “The number of babies born here continues to grow, the number of surgeries done here continues to grow, year over year,” he said. “To that point, we just broke ground on a $100 million expansion to meet those growth needs at St. Francis. So the hospital is doing well, the community has embraced the hospital and we’re continuing to grow to meet the needs of the community.”

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis and the Sisters of Charity, according to its website. The hospital has been ranked as one of America’s 50 best hospitals from 2008-17. “We have a really long history and because of that we’ve grown with Colorado Springs and the communities surrounding Colorado Springs,” said Andrea Sinclair, public information officer for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. “We are very familiar with the patients and people we serve, acutely aware of the needs in terms of health care.” The hospital, a member of Centura Health, sees about 104,827 annual emergency visits and around 23,102 annual admissions, according to its fact sheet
for the end of the fiscal year June 30, 2016. “We’re not just focused on taking care of people when they are sick, but when they are healthy as well, and we focus on promoting a culture of health and wellness throughout our community. I think that makes Penrose-St. Francis an excellent health care provider,” Sinclair said.

Mike Henne, CEO of Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group Outpatient Rehabilitation, was excited to learn that his company was named tops in its category. “It’s an honor,” Henne said. “When you get an award like this, it means the work being done on a daily basis is appreciated by our patients.” Henne said the Orthopaedic Group is the largest — and one of the only independent — orthopedic groups in Colorado Springs. “The rest have been bought by the big hospitals,” he said. “We have 17 physicians that are providers and we see about 150 patients a day. Usually you don’t hear from the patients who are satisfied, so to get this positive reinforcement means we’re doing a good job for our patients. “It really makes you feel rewarded to get an honor like this. A focus on delivering high-quality, comprehensive and integrated care helped give Colorado Springs Health Partners the win for Best Physician Group. It’s not the first time they’ve received attention from Business Journal readers — this is the fifth year in a row they’ve earned the nomination and a win. For more than 70 years, residents have received a spectrum of health care services that are, according to CSHP Market President Oraida Roman, delivered in an efficient and coordinated manner. It has also grown quite a bit — starting with a single downtown location in 1946 run by World War II veterans. Now, CSHP is a multispecialty
practice that focuses on urgent care, women’s health, pediatrics, primary care and specialty care services. The providers and teams that support them have a unique capacity to provide all the services to Colorado Springs’ residents. “We are proud to be a part of this community and are committed to the health and well-being of our fellow residents and patients,” said Roman.

Penrose Urgent Care recently moved to a more central location at the corner of Union Boulevard and Circle Drive to offer greater convenience to patients, according to Chris Valentine, director of marketing and communications for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. “Penrose-St. Francis Urgent Care has been a part of the Colorado Springs community for many years. We recognize that there are times when an illness or injury doesn’t require an emergency department visit but may occur at a time when your primary care physician’s office is not open,” Valentine said in an email. “That is where an urgent care comes in and we are happy to be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., to care for those who are sick or injured. Best Graphic Designer Design Rangers
Design Rangers co-owner Chris Schell said Best In Business is a valuable affirmation that the 10-year-old company has made it in Colorado Springs. “It means a lot because for a long time, part of what we realized was we just weren’t visible,” he said. Chris and his wife and co-owner, Jenny, are both locals, but Chris said at first they weren’t feeling the love. “I think for a while we kind of thought, ‘If you build it, they will come’ and people will find you. ... But there came a point where we realized we needed to be out there and get involved in lots of things. So [the award] feels great — if people know us out there that means we really are a part of this community.” Chris said Design Rangers “focuses on telling people stories” and takes a comprehensive approach to a business’ messaging needs. “We help them extract whatever their underlying story is and then we bring that forward through visuals — that could be through websites, through advertising,
through branding, or creative strategy,” he said. “People oftentimes will come to us and say, ‘I need a website.’ We say, ‘Great — why?’ or ‘Tell us more about yourself and your business goals.’ We tend to dig a little bit deeper to look holistically at what they’re trying to do.” This approach yields new insights and helps clients examine their marketing and business goals and how design fits into that, he said. Design Rangers’ clients are about a 50/50 split between nonprofits and outdoor recreation, but they work with “any business that has an underlying ‘why’ to what they do and is passionate about what they’re bringing forward.”

Providing both local businesses and businesses throughout the state with IT support since 1998, Trevor Dierdorff, founder and chief executive officer of Amnet IT, and his team continue to grow and maintain their market goals. “I had a business mentor named Jerry Biggs and when Amnet was in its infancy, he told me, ‘You have to choose if you’re going to be the best or the cheapest and you can’t be both. There’s not a wrong answer.’ So, I decided philosophically, I was going to make my goal being the best,” Dierdorff said. He said a factor that has made his company strong is “phenomenal client and employee retention.” Amnet recently lost its first employee since 2013. “It helps to have that consistency with our staff and be consistent for our clients,” he said. As a previous Best in Business winner, Dierdorff said, “It’s a matter of pride that we continue to prove to the market and prove to ourselves we are the best. Best Website Development Company Infront Webworks
Infront Webworks Infront Webworks’ Marketing Director Michael Hodgdon (left) and owner Matthew Palis operate the full-service agency.
While Infront Webworks has had a presence in Colorado Springs for 20 years, it recently expanded its portfolio of services from a web development company to a full-service agency. “We handle every aspect of your online presence,” said Michael Hodgdon, marketing director at Infront. “We can develop on a wide range of content management systems to accommodate exactly what our customers need.” Hodgdon said because Infront can operate across myriad systems and languages, the company can accommodate all price points. “If you go to a web development company, they may only work in certain platforms and may not be robust enough to meet customer needs or priced too high to meet a lower-end company’s needs,” he said. As for being recognized as the Best Website Development Company by
Colorado Springs Business Journal readers, Hodgdon said it’s an honor. “This is a very competitive market in Colorado Springs. There are lots of good companies we compete with to be the best, so to be known among such a good group is humbling,” he said. Why is Infront the best? “One core value that’s never changed, even with different ownership, is the client absolutely, 100 percent comes first. That has never changed. You hear it a lot, but we go the extra mile.”

Nonprofits Best Nonprofit Organization TESSA
TESSA Development Director Becky Treece said being recognized on the organization’s 40th anniversary is exciting. “That’s awesome. It’s fantastic,” she said. “To know that readers still recognize that we have a value to the community after 40 years is very satisfying.” TESSA’s 40 employees and handful of volunteers work to build a community without domestic violence and sexual violence, while striving to empower victims. TESSA was established in 1977 in response to a high rate of calls to local law enforcement from women threatened or assaulted by their partners. The organization is the only provider of confidential services specifically for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in El Paso and Teller counties. “The work we do is seen as an issue by the community that they really don’t want to recognize or talk about, but we try to get it out there and make it part
of the conversation,” Treece said. “The fact that our community has recognized us and believes in the work we do means the world to us. I want to give a great big Thank You to everybody that participated in this survey and believes in the work we do.”

USAA
United Services Automobile Association — the insurance, banking, investment and retirement entity that has served military community needs for over 90 years across the nation — has found success in the Colorado Springs market. As the home of Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, the United States Air Force Academy, Schriever Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, the Springs is a hub for military families, and USAA services that community niche. “Nearly one in four employees across USAA is a veteran or military spouse. In Colorado Springs specifically, that number is closer to one in three,” said Kent Fortune, USAA vice president and general manager in Colorado Springs. “This understanding and respect pushes us to constantly improve the products we offer and the services we provide.” Fortune cites talent retention, a good work environment and having the right tools and people as USAA of Colorado Springs’ keys to success. “Like the military, USAA operates with the core values of honesty, integrity, loyalty and service,” he said. “Together with our mission, they drive our behaviors and underpin our dedication to serving our members whenever and wherever they need us today and in the future.”

Best Residential Real Estate Company RE/MAX Properties Inc.
Originally founded in Denver in 1973, the RE/MAX concept was simple: Agents would pay their share of office expenses and keep their commissions. The company attracted productive, experienced brokers and quickly began franchising the brand. Managing broker Joe Clement started RE/MAX properties in Colorado Springs 31 years ago — and has never looked back. Today, RE/MAX Properties has four offices in the Springs, more than 200 agents and has been the city’s leading residential real estate brokerage since 1989. The company’s roster includes brokers with more than 30 years of local experience as well as fresh-faced Millennials who cater to their peers — now the fastest-growing segment of the market. “We’re blessed with the best agents around,” Clement said. “They average 22 transactions annually, compared to about six for all agents nationally. Sixty-eight percent of our business comes from former clients and referrals, and we have a great training program for our younger agents.”

Picnic Basket Catering Picnic Basket Catering and its subsidiaries are recognized as the city’s Best Catering Company.
Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Best Catering Company Picnic Basket Catering, Cravings Special Events
In 1989, with $600 and big dreams, two friends got together and launched the business that now encompasses Picnic Basket Catering, Buffalo Gals Catering and Cravings Five Star Catering. The business was founded by Michelle Talarico and Kathy Dreiling. The two “combined their love of food, fun and $300 each to pursue adventures in catering and event planning,” the company’s website said. “We believe you get out what you put in,” Talarico said. “ If you expect to produce amazing events, put the work in.” And for the past 22 years, Picnic Basket has received kudos, awards and “best of” nods. The reason is clear: “… The Picnic Basket family of companies maintains the original commitment to delicious food, top-notch service and our community partners,” said the company’s website. And Talarico credits the company’s culture for the success. “Kathy and I still work 60-plus hours a week,” she said. “We treat our staff like we treat our clients.” Quality is the major goal of the Picnic Basket, reflected in its mission statement: “Building trusting relationships with our catering customers is our No. 1 priority. We are dedicated to serving fresh and delicious food with an emphasis on artistic presentation and ingenuity.” And the future? Talarico says the company will continue to grow — possibly with a Buffalo Gals restaurant concept.

Best Golf Course
Patty Jewett
Patty Jewett Golf Course is “the Cheers of golf — everybody knows everybody’s name,” said Golf Division Superintendent Pat Gentile. “It’s a very friendly atmosphere.” The 300 acres of courses, some of the oldest west of the Mississippi River, was deeded to the city by William Jewett in 1898. Gentile said the history, location, mature tree lines and sweeping views lead a lot of people to think it’s a country club. In fact, it is a municipal golf course open to the public and — averaging 110,000 nine-hole rounds annually — one of the state’s busiest. Gentile emphasized Patty Jewett is an enterprise of the city, and receives no revenue from taxpayers and no subsidies from the city of Colorado Springs. “Our fees come from our users, so that is a big thing — we pay our own way. We pay for our water, utilities, payroll, accounting; we pay for every bit of our existence as a golf course,” he said, adding the Best In Business recognition is an honor. “It’s nice being able to provide a low-cost golf course facility in town for our citizens, that they can be proud of, because some people think of municipal courses as rundown or beginner places, but [we have] … the typical things you’d see at more private or resort-type places.” He pointed to the course’s bar, restaurant and pro shop, the maintenance and environmental protection efforts, and the views of Pikes Peak. “We always say what a gift William Jewett gave to the city back then; it’s amazing the way it’s evolved,” Gentile said. “I think if he came back today, I think he’d be happy with what he’d see.”

Best Hotel The Broadmoor
The Broadmoor hotel, tucked into the neighborhoods surrounding the base of Cheyenne Mountain, features wilderness activities, restaurants, a spa, game room and more. Through the years, the historic hotel has hosted several famous guests, including former President Barack Obama and former NFL player Peyton Manning. In 2018, it will celebrate its 100th anniversary. “We didn’t get here without having people of vision who helped found us and people of vision that brought us into the 20th century and now ownership who will carry us very well through the 21st century and beyond,” said Allison Scott, director of communications for The Broadmoor. Almost 100 years later, The Broadmoor, fully staffed, has 2,800 full- and part-time employee positions and a very diverse staff that, combined, represent 24 different countries, according to Scott. “What makes us unique is not as much our building, not as much the things we are involved with like Seven Falls and our wilderness projects. Those are parcels of what we are, not who we are. The people who work for us make us who we are,” Scott said. “We are very proud of what we do and we are proud of this community. We hope that shows with everything we are doing. We believe in good stewardship.”

It’s a theater, a museum and an art school all rolled into one — and the Fine Arts Center offers even more with concerts, stand-up comedy and special performances — while striving to inspire community vitality through arts and education. “Our mission is to elevate the community spirit through our programming,” said FAC Media Relations and Outreach Manager Amanda Weston. “We aspire to educate the community and bring arts into the community with every single thing we do.” Built in 1936, the Fine Arts Center grew out of the Broadmoor Arts Academy that began in 1919 and furthered the goal of becoming one of the only multi-discipline arts institutions in the nation. “I think our rich history sets us apart,” Weston said. “We’ve been a pillar in the community for almost 100 years. We’re an organization the others look up to. “And it’s a great honor to be recognized by the Colorado Springs community as the best museum and art gallery.”

Best Tourist Attraction Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Unique experiences, including hand-feeding resident giraffes, help to make Cheyenne Mountain Zoo the region’s best tourist attraction. It’s not only the variety of experiences and animals on-site (including the aforementioned giraffes, an 18-member herd) that help separate the zoo from its peers, it’s also the charitable contributions to animals the organization has made. “We’re proud of the work we do here,” said Jenny Koch, the zoo’s marketing director. Some of that work includes educating people about the animals and, as a result, many help protect those animals in the wild. The zoo is a nonprofit and doesn’t receive tax support. As a result, it relies on the community for success. In the most recent fiscal year, the zoo raised more than $485,000 for conservation through its Quarters for Conservation program, which donates 75 cents from every admission to the program. Wild elephants, rhinos, giraffes, orangutans and amphibians have all benefited. The zoo has also contributed to on-site breedand-release programs for black-footed ferrets and Wyoming toads, both of which were thought extinct but are now thriving in the wild. “We love our community and it feels great to know that they love what we do as well,” said Koch.

Colorado Springs Write-Ins Best Apartment Complex Boulder Crescent
Now owned by Griffis/Blessing Inc., which has operated out of Colorado Springs since 1985 and manages more than 50 properties across the Front Range, Boulder Crescent is a 34-unit complex situated next to Monument Valley Park in downtown Colorado Springs. Pet friendly, with gated access, covered parking, elevator access, a heated swimming pool, and proximity to the ever-popular Santa Fe Trail, it’s a more contemporary and private alternative to another nearby Griffis/Blessing’s property, Cascade Park. Boulder Crescent units feature large private patios with views of Pikes Peak. The over 50-year-old building was renovated by Schuck Communities, giving the units sleek touches like glass tile backsplashes, ceramic bath tiling and stainless steel appliances. Resident reviews over the years indicate that the location, apartment layout and sense of urgency in addressing small maintenance issues were some of the most attractive parts of renting at this three-story apartment complex.

Formerly Pikes Peak SEO, SocialSEO has grown — thanks to the leadership of Greg Walthour — from a handful of employees to one of the premier digital marketing firms in the state. A rapidly growing and ever-changing field, digital marketing necessitates a highly creative and dynamic team. Fostering that environment seems to be what makes SocialSEO special. “We invest almost three times as much time and money into our training and [research and development] as our average competitor. This industry changes quickly, and you have to stay on top of it,” according to the company’s website.

Best Breakfast Restaurant Over Easy
Centrally located, this 12-bedroom bed and breakfast has modern amenities in a meticulously maintained turn-of-the-century-style home. Cheery, sunny and comfortable, St. Mary’s Inn is popular for tourists, honeymooners and families. They’ve won Bedandbreakfast.com’s Best of the West and Rockies award since 2008, and chalk up their success to being in a business that suits their values. “Come over for a cup of coffee. See, hospitality is what it’s all about,” said owner Edwin Stark. “Serving others and hospitality make us truly happy. If you can be subservient to your guests, have a good time together, and make sure they enjoy the experience, that’s what this business, the business of hospitality, is all about. It all comes down to treating others like you like to be treated, even if they’re having a bad day. Especially if they’re having a bad day.”
It’s challenging to have a breakfast eatery that’s busy enough to have a significant wait time every weekend morning, and still manage to maintain a high customer rating, but Over Easy pulls it off. Now expanded to three locations in Colorado Springs, its jam-packed (literally, in some cases) local, organic, made-from-scratch menu has something for everyone. “First of all, I want our ingredients to be local as often as possible and always fresh, which means there is a large focus on what is seasonal,” said Executive Chef Justin Castor in an online interview. “That can be one of the more challenging parts of the job, but it’s so important. I want people to know exactly what is in their food — no chemicals or preservatives that people don’t understand. Also, I do everything I can to avoid waste. When our owner Randy brought the chefs to Shamrock Foods in Arizona to learn and see firsthand all the hard work that goes into the produce industry, I left with an entirely new appreciation and passion to avoid unnecessary disposal.” Owned by Rocky Mountain Restaurant Group, Over Easy is one of several popular and growing chains, a sibling to Salsa Brava, Urban Egg Daytime Eatery in Fort Collins and Highlands Ranch, and Sonterra Grill.

Best Brewery Bristol Brewing Company
Bristol Brewing Company is no stranger to awards. This local long-established favorite continues to receive top accolades — despite growing brewery competition — because of its commitment to the community and its identity. “We just try to be ourselves,” said Steve Oliveri, marketing coordinator at Bristol. “What that means is that we really focus on why we do what we do and remember why this all started in the first place. With that, there’s always a focus to create kinship and community, and make sure both our products and service are enriching the lives of our fans and customers.” Bristol Brewing regularly hosts “Karma Hour” events with a percentage of beer sales going to a nonprofit or community group. Located in the converted Ivywild School, built in 1916 and converted to a hub for community event, noshing and
imbibing, Bristol Pub is co-located with its brewing operations. Its large patio is popular in the summer, and the large open pub space is favored year-round. “I think that if we can infuse in everybody in the building — and everybody in the community quite frankly — just to think about the things they do on an everyday basis and how they relate to not only other people but the environment, we are all going to be better off,” said owner and founder Mike Bristol on the company’s website.

Best Co-working Space Epicentral Coworking
Started by entrepreneurs Lisa Tessarowicz and Hannah Parsons, Epicentral Coworking at 415 N. Tejon St. is a collaborative space for entrepreneurs, startups, nontraditional businesses and remote workers. With office space available at different levels — from just a desk where workers can plug in their laptops to full-fledged office suites — the company strives to do more than just provide a place to work. “We want to create a community for freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers,” Tessarowicz said. “We want to create a community for people who don’t work in a traditional office environment, a place that is supportive and collaborative.” Co-working spaces have taken off in recent years, and Epicentral competes with shared office spaces around the city. But Tessarowicz says her concept is different. “We have an established community of more than 100 members,” she said.
“We’re diverse; we’re collaborative; we’re supportive. We started with the goal of being more than just a place to work — you can do that at a coffee shop. But we want to build the creative, collaborative space first. That’s what makes us different.” And the future looks much the same, she said. “We want to continue to add value to our members at Epicentral,” she said. “We know that people want to work hard, want to collaborate. So we’ll continue to build and support that the best we can.”

Best Coffee Shop Dutch Bros.
With four locations around Colorado Springs, Dutch Bros. has become a community staple, competing both with giants like Starbucks and with small, local coffee shops around the city. What sets the company apart? According to its founders, it’s all about sticking to its values. “Coffee is what we do,” the website said. “But it’s not who we are. Here at Dutch Bros., we live by three main core values. One cannot be sacrificed for another. All must work together to provide the best experience possible. We may be a coffee company, but we are in the relationship business.” Those values are: quality, service and speed. But what about that name? The franchise was created by two brothers, Dane and Travis Boersma, who are of Dutch descent. The family spent generations in dairy farming, but say government regulations forced them to sell the cows and make a living some other way. The brothers bought a double-headed espresso machine, “threw open the barn doors and started experimenting with 100 pounds of beans and a rockin’ stereo.” That was 1992 — and the experiment paid off. Today, Dutch Bros. is the largest privately held drive-thru coffee company with more than 260 locations in seven states.

Best Cybersecurity Firm Firma IT Solutions
Rodney Gullatte Jr. started his company as a way to stay gainfully employed during the frequent moves military spouses are required to make. “I face the challenge of potential unemployment every time my active-duty Air Force wife gets orders,” he said. “After being awarded a GS-13 position with NOAA in Key West and having it rescinded 23 days later because of the government shutdown, I incorporated, joined the Key West Chamber of Commerce and haven’t looked back. That was six years ago.” When his wife received orders for Colorado Springs, he kept his business in Key West but opened another branch in the Springs. Gullatte says it’s his commitment to the community that sets him apart. “Service in this community and the willingness to give is something that makes my business different from others,” he said. “This includes being the new director of community service projects for the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs. Helping other businesses make money also makes us different. We deliberately don’t manage all aspects of IT, just so we can form relationships with other IT businesses in this community and spread the wealth. Our purpose is not to have transactional relationships with people but to help them and form meaningful relationships.” And he shows that giving dedication throughout his business. “‘Givers gain’ is our guiding philosophy,” he said. “If I can help other businesses thrive, then they will help me thrive.”

Scott Randall started Pressed4Time in 2005 after a stint in Major League Baseball playing for the Cincinnati Reds. He was in the Springs, playing for the Sky Sox, when he decided, as he put it, “It was time to hang ‘em up.” He wanted to stay in the Springs, so he looked around for work. And he found it with a Business for Sale ad for the local Pressed4Time franchise. “I thought, ‘I can do that!’” he said. “We bought it, and here we are 12 years later, getting our fifth straight CSBJ Best in Business award.” Pressed4Time is a dry-cleaning, alterations, shoe shine and repair — as well as a host of other services — business that comes to the customer to pick up and drop off items needing care. “I think what sets us apart is our willingness to serve the entire area from Colorado Springs up into Monument and Black Forest, at offices and homes, without the requirement of regular business,” he said. “Additionally, providing shoe shines/repairs and rug cleaning goes beyond what other cleaners provide. “Our guiding philosophy is to provide solid quality service constantly, at a competitive price, and go beyond when possible.”

Old Colorado City Farmers Market
One thing sets the Old Colorado City Farmers Market apart from the others around El Paso County — it only sells produce, prepared foods like sausage and preserves, baked goods and a touch of honey. “We’re not a flea market,” said Frank Schmidt, who started the Old Colorado City Farmers Market more than 30 years ago. “So many of them now, that’s all they are — they sell everything. We only sell local fruits, vegetables, baked goods.” Schmidt himself uses the market to sell his locally produced honey. He said the business model makes sense and is wildly popular. “I think it’s the best one in town,” he said. “And we have people from all over the city come down here. We appreciate the vendors, we appreciate the assistance of the Old Colorado City Association, and we appreciate our customers.” Open in Bancroft Park on Colorado Avenue, the farmers market operates every Saturday from June through October, and is also known as the Pikes Peak Farmers Market. According to the market’s website, Schmidt has been selling his products since 1979 — through many changes. For instance, in 2013, he had to move vendors off South 24th Street and into Bancroft Park — something he says people had to get used to.

Best Food Truck PigLatin
Andres Velez describes PigLatin as “a food truck that offers pork as our centerpiece — so it’s not necessarily Colombian food or Cuban food or Asian food — as long as it’s got pork, we’ll make something original out of it.” This is PigLatin’s second Best In Business win in two years and Velez, who owns PigLatin with wife Patricia, says they appreciate the community recognition of their hard work, and they’re excited to be part of the Springs’ burgeoning food scene. “It’s a growing and changing market — a lot of people are open to new things now. Ten years ago when I first got here, there were very limited options; now the food scene has really taken off, so it’s great to be a part of that scene,” he said.

Best Hairstylist Jessica Valentine
Jessica Valentine says she “took the scenic route” to her career as a hairstylist. “I went to cosmetology school the first time in the mid ’90s in New York City,” she said. “At the time, I was working as a model full-time and I went to cosmetology school part-time, completed the course, completed everything — but then I met my husband and moved on to Connecticut, got married and I never took my state boards.” Seven years ago, she enrolled in cosmetology school again, this time in Colorado Springs. “By that time I was a single mom, working. I went back to school, finally got my license and started working at Genesis Salon here in Colorado Springs, and then I moved to the tiny little salon which is right next to my house. ... I came back around to what I had originally planned to do 20 years prior.” At Lodo Looks — A Hair Salon, Valentine loves the interaction with her clients best. “I really love making them a better version of themselves. ... I enjoy watching the transformation and I love the fact my clients trust me to do that for them.” Valentine said she felt honored by the Best In Business award. “It’s a tremendous compliment for my [clients] to think that much of me,” she said.

Best Home Improvement Company Jackson Homes Roofing & Construction
Will Jackson started Jackson Homes Roofing & Construction in 2010 following a layoff — it was the year the economic downturn took its toll on the company he’d been working for since high school. “It was the most nerve-wracking experience I’ve ever had,” he recalled. “I had $30,000 saved and I took all that money and put my last penny into the [new] business.” He’d been a project manager averaging 50 semi-custom houses a year in the $500,000-$800,000 range, but he started over as a one-man-show, framing basements, doing remodels and learning roofing. Today, his business encompasses Jackson Properties, Jackson Developmental Solutions (the commercial construction division) and Jackson Roofing. “I think what sets us apart is how diversified we are,” Jackson said. “We have lot of feedback from customers that they really like the fact that we’re a one-stop shop. We do new construction ... custom houses, roofing, gutters, siding, decks, window installs, screens, kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels. ... The big stuff, the small stuff. They don’t have to call anyone else.” Jackson said he is “super excited” about the award. “It’s the first time we’ve been nominated for something like this. ... We’ve grown over the years — we’ve got nine employees now, we’ve got vehicles, we’re building our commercial building that we’re moving into this year — to have this is icing on the cake. We know we’re going in the right direction when people are giving us that feedback.”

Best New Restaurant/Bar Cerberus Brewing Company
Cerberus Brewing Company partners Tom Halfast, Josh Adamski, Cindy Geiser and Jerry Morris opened their business in 2016 after renovating the former Colorado Avenue Veterinarian Hospital. It’s been a huge success ever since. “We’re still pretty astonished,” said Morris, the company president. “On Father’s Day we set a record for business on a Sunday, and usually the day after is much slower, but then we set a record for business on a Monday. The trajectory is just amazing.” Morris said being the top choice of Business Journal readers is important. “To be coming from a group of people — other than a board — means more,” he said. “For an editorial to say you’re the best is one thing, but for voters to recognize us is very satisfying. It’s completely different; we had no input. It’s real, not something manufactured.” Morris said being recognized as best new restaurant and bar “is reassurance we’re doing it right. We put so much time and effort into getting open, it’s gratifying that it’s worked out so well. It’s nice to put something together people enjoy and value.” Morris and Halfast have partnered in four businesses — on the Westside or downtown — over the past 30 years. Morris said they focused on four areas with Cerberus: food, beer, service and ambience. “The food is every bit as important and really a huge draw,” he said, while complimenting Executive Chef Mark LeFebvre. “We’re trying to use local food and ingredients. We’re staying seasonal and are about to make our fifth menu change in nine months.” Adamski has been home-brewing since 2003, and studied advanced brewing theory with the Siebel Institute in Chicago.

Best Office Cleaning Company VeriClean Springs
VeriClean Springs owner Dee Anna Thompson, who also won this award in 2013, was ecstatic to be recognized by Business Journal readers. “That’s wonderful. It means everything to me,” she said. “I put the award on all my proposals and paperwork.” She’s won other awards but said this one means the most. “We’ve been recognized by the Gazette and by the Business Journal, but I so prefer the Business Journal because that’s our customers,” Thompson said. “It’s people who are serious about business and that’s our demographic. We love to win this award.” Thompson started the business 17 years ago in Denver before moving to Colorado Springs. Asked what sets her business apart, she said, “We do what we say we’re going to do; others might sell on the service and not do half of what they’re supPhoto by Helen Robinson
posed to. We listen to our customers. All of our clients come to us after dropping other contracts. We have a lot of history and keep getting stronger and stronger every year.” Thompson said her cleaning company is going global. “It’ll probably take a couple of years but we’re trying to sell our model to others in the United States to start with,” she said. “That’s how you know you’re doing something right, when others are interested in it.”

Best Pet Services Company Wag N’ Wash Natural Food & Bakery
Owners Dan Remus and Jeff Straus started Wag N’ Wash Natural Food & Bakery in Colorado Springs 18 years ago with a store on Uintah Street. Their success has spawned two additional stores in Colorado Springs, with two others in Castle Rock and Littleton. “It’s because of our customers that we’re successful,” said Kara Loehr, the assistant manager of the Uintah store. “We try to build and strengthen that bond between a pet and its guardian.” As the name suggests, their stores offer much more than dog washing and grooming. They produce healthy treats for dogs and cats, and take the time to educate their customers when it comes to nutrition and toys, along with other products and services. “We’re a natural pet food store that promotes a healthy lifestyle,” Loehr said. “Every employee is educated in the food and products that we sell. We have amazing customer service.” Loehr said that Remus and Straus would be extremely pleased to be recognized by the Business Journal. “It’s very important to us,” she said. “To be recognized by the Business Journal readers is very satisfying.”

Best Place for a Business Lunch The Famous, A Steak House
Opened by Tony and Anna Leahy in 2002 and locally owned to this day, The Famous has been at the top of its highly competitive category ever since. With its comfortable booths, horseshoe bar and polished menu, The Famous is an elegant urban oasis in the heart of downtown. Offering prime steaks, fresh seafood and more, The Famous considers everyone family and sees lots of regulars in its heart-of-downtown establishment. It’s fine dining with a casual feel, as well as a family-oriented restaurant, said Bridgett Teresinski, party and events manager at The Famous. “[When you] walk in the door, there’s a friendly, smiley face. Our staff knows our guests by name and we definitely welcome you,” she said. The food is great, the servers attentive, the bar well-stocked, and the ambiance
exceptional — especially around the bar on Friday night. The restaurant, as well as the building that houses it, now belong to hotelier/entrepreneur Perry Sanders, a longtime customer, and business partner, John Goede. “I didn’t change a thing when I bought it,” said Sanders, “We had the good sense to be preservationists of Tony and company’s fabulous concept. Exceptional food and high-end yet casual service, in a classy but cool atmosphere. Preserve perfection when you get the rare chance to do so.”

Best Place for a Large Conference The Antlers, A Wyndham Hotel
A large, flexible conference space helped give The Antlers, A Wyndham Hotel the win for Best Place for a Large Conference. It’s also a favorite of local military groups as it’s a very military-friendly hotel that Fort Carson and Peterson and Schriever Air Force bases use quite frequently, said Mark Richardson, regional director of sales and catering at The Antlers. Up to 900 people can fit (or dance) in the main ballroom and up to 300 in its other ballroom. The largest hosted party was 1,200 for a military ball. In addition, many associations and nonprofits hold events at the hotel, including conferences, breakfasts, lunches and dinners and recently, a mayoral roast.
But it’s not just about a large room. “I’m very proud of the staff and level of service we offer,” said Richardson. It’s the service and quality of food that, he said, keeps his visitors coming back again and again. “To be considered is wonderful. … It’s pretty cool actually,” he added.

Best Place to Work Griffis/Blessing Inc.
It’s employees first at Griffis/Blessing Inc., which received the win for Best Place to Work, as well as Best Residential and Best Commercial Property Management Firm. BJ Hybl, president and COO of Griffis/Blessing, believes it’s all in the culture of Southern Colorado’s largest property manager of commercial and multifamily properties. “We enjoy working with each other,” he said. And, as a service organization, he believes it should always be the people that come first because that’s the only asset there is to work with. Fortunately, Griffis/Blessing has employees who enjoy working with people. “We strive to be one of those organizations where people want to come to work,” he said. Griffis/Blessing manages more than 100 commercial buildings and over 55 apartment buildings and offers many weekly, monthly and annual recognition programs for its approximately 325 employees, who are spread throughout the Front Range. One of its awards — one that only a select few receive — is The Star Performer Award, for lending exceptional support to co-workers and exemplifying the company’s core values. “Our competitive edge is our people,” said Hybl. “It’s not rocket science. … [They’ve] got to be happy and feel and believe they’re on a team and being supported from all levels.”

Best Radio Station for Business 91.5 KRCC
Licensed in 1951, Colorado College-owned 91.5 KRCC was the first noncommercial FM station in Colorado. In 1984, the station became Colorado’s third National Public Radio member station. It has gradually expanded its reach by building multiple translators and transmitters to improve reception in its mountainous service area. KRCC provides nationally distributed public radio news/talk programming as well as local coverage of Southern Colorado and northern New Mexico during daytime hours. After 7 p.m., the station features locally produced music programming. Interestingly, the genteel field of public radio is fiercely competitive, especially since Colorado Public Radio announced plans earlier this year to enter the local market. The station also announced plans on June 12 to locate a new transmitter in Woodland Park. “We are very proud of our growing service to the community,” said KRCC General Manager Tammy Terwelp. “We are so excited with our new improved signal in the Woodland Park area, our two upcoming hires to expand our newsroom with more local and regional reporting, our launch of a specialized music-on-demand player and our move to a professional broadcast facility with community spaces on Tejon Street. We have been a part of the Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado communities since 1951 and our dedication and commitment has never been stronger. Thank you to everyone who voted for us.”

Best Shopping Center The Promenade Shops at Briargate
The Promenade Shops at Briargate is an upscale “lifestyle center” with 55 tenants ranging from Apple to Victoria’s Secret — national brands that cater to an affluent suburban demographic. Developers Poag & McEwen originated the concept three decades ago, and have applied it to many similarly named shopping centers. The key: Populate the centers with national specialty stores and offer restaurants, superior architecture and landscaping and other amenities that appeal to the surrounding community. Consider the center’s demographics — 160,954 people with an average household income of $100,000 live within 10 miles of the center. The center’s website characterizes its location as “an ideal site ¼ mile east of I-25 off Briargate Parkway
and Highway 83. More than 100,000 vehicles pass through this area each day.” The center opened in 2003 and has thrived ever since, along with the upscale northeast and northwestern residential neighborhoods that are home to many of its customers. Its managers are sensitive to modern trends, and now describe it as a pet-friendly center, advising customers to “look for the ‘Pets Welcome’ decal in the stores who welcome pets.”

A tip: Arrive a bit earlier if you would like to use the steam or infrared sauna. Best TV Station for Business News KRDO-TV
KRDO-TV, which first went on the air on Sept. 21, 1953, was one of the three original television stations in Colorado Springs. Harry Hoth, a then-junior employee of KRDO Radio, persuaded the owners of the company to create a TV station. Hoth acquired the station in 1961 and it remained in the family for 45 years. Hoth, who served as Colorado Springs mayor from 1963-67, made sure the station served the city’s business community with timely, accurate in-depth coverage. That tradition continues with the current owners, the St. Joseph, Mo. News-Press & Gazette Company, which has been owned and managed by the Bradley family since 1950. “KRDO News Channel 13 is proud and humbled to be recognized by our local business community,” said General Manager Tim Larson. “Like many local entrepreneurs, we are a family-owned company and the home of where the news comes first in Southern Colorado. For almost 64 years, we’ve enjoyed connecting businesses with customers across the networks of KRDO.”

Best Urban Redevelopment Ivywild School
After decades of losing many of the city’s most iconic structures — the Burns Opera House and the second iteration of the Antlers Hotel are widely considered the city’s greatest losses — the residents of Colorado Springs have begun standing up for history with a mission to recycle it. Perhaps the most successful example of this new wave of urban redevelopment is the Ivywild School. In 2012, a group of local businessmen purchased the school that for 93 years provided educations to thousands of local children, and they quickly recreated the space as one that would remain at the core of the Ivywild neighborhood community. “The Ivywild School project demonstrates what can be achieved with reuse and renovation on a large scale,” said Ivywild spokesperson Steve Oliveri. “The Ivywild School represents the true value of urban redevelopment, holding both commercial opportunity and historical integrity in mind at the same time.” Four years after opening, it appears their ambitions have become a great success. The former school now houses a cocktail and espresso bar, bakery, butcher, whiskey distillery, an events venue and ample retail space and is home to Bristol Brewing Co. (one of the area’s largest breweries). The project has helped kickstart a new era of placemaking, preservation and community-minded commerce in Colorado Springs. “This award confirms for the Ivywild School, as a whole organism, that our love for the rich history of the Ivywild neighborhood and school, and even the greater community of Colorado Springs, is something that resonates with our guests and fans,” Oliveri said.

Best Pueblo Breakfast Restaurant The Hanging Tree Café
Charles Sole changed the name of his award-winning coffee shop from The Daily Grind to the Hanging Tree Café in 2016. Sole, who has had family in Pueblo for the past century, said the name better reflects the historic roots of the business’ neighborhood. “The hanging tree used to be called the Old Monarch or Big Tree,” Sole said. “It stood on this block for 388 years before it was cut down. It’s Colorado’s oldest known historic landmark.” Sole and his 13 employees have easy access to the plaque that commemorates the site of the Hanging Tree when they aren’t catering to the city’s coffee addicts. “We’re open early to late seven days a week,” Sole said. “We serve everything from espresso to sandwiches and breakfast burritos. We also do a lot of vegan and vegetarian stuff.” A lot of love goes into the food at The Hanging Tree, which also takes home the award for Best Pueblo Breakfast Restaurant. Sole said much of the food is made from scratch, including soups, baked goods and the shop’s pork green chile. He said one thing that sets his business apart is its focus on sustainable business practices. “We are totally green. We recycle everything and use recycled products,” he said. “We’re also very community based — we do musical events with local and out-of-town musicians and show a lot of artwork. We also have a community garden out back. We try to give back when we can.” Half of the baking is done from scratch and all soups are made from scratch. “We don’t use bag things,” Sole said. “We don’t serve people that kind of stuff.” The restaurant prides itself not just on its great food, but also its prompt service. Online ordering is also available.

Best Pueblo Brewery Brues Alehouse Brewing Brues Alehouse Brewing, located in the historic Riverwalk District, won for Best Pueblo Brewery and Best New Pueblo Restaurant. Brues offers fun and excitement with craft beer, sustainable food and live music. The restaurant serves upscale pub food with gluten-free and vegan options, and also has an innovative bakery and coffee bar. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the people of Pueblo,” said Tony Garcia, who owns Brues with his father, Marty Garcia. “My dad and I have lived in Pueblo our entire lives and we’re invested in this city. To be a success here is very rewarding.” Brues Alehouse opened in late December 2015 and boasts space for about 600 people. It features a main level restaurant and bar, a patio, bakery, coffee bar, a rooftop deck with a bar and satellite kitchen, plus lively music. “We’re kind of a little city with all the things we’ve got going on here,” Garcia said. “We’ve done something different here and people have embraced it. We’ve tried to energize Pueblo and push some boundaries with our bakery and desserts, giving people what they might see in a bigger city. “It’s a new concept [for Pueblo]. It’s similar to Ivywild School in Colorado Springs, but with one owner.” It’s all in a building that is about 75 years old and used to be the Pueblo jail and police station. As for the music, Garcia said, “We bring in a lot of nationally recognized artists.”

Best Pueblo Cybersecurity Company Corporate Technologies Inc.
David and Mary Swangler of Corporate Technologies Inc. were voted Best Pueblo Cybersecurity Company. The couple prides themselves in keeping customers since the business incorporated in 1990. “We work hard to get that kind of recognition,” David said of the award. “It’s fantastic! It’s nice to be recognized.” The tech support company specializes in IT management and support, consulting, and cloud solutions, among other services. According to David, the company has 6½ employees and is in growth mode. CTI’s niche is small businesses, according to David. “We really … fit smaller companies that don’t have ability to do their own IT, but need the resources of a full-fledged
help desk,” he said. He said the thing that sets CTI apart from competitors is the longevity and expertise of its employees. “No company in Pueblo can last without a real good work ethic from its employees, and we’re really concerned about our customers,” he said. Swangler said he enjoys his job and interacting with the community. “We really enjoy the work. We hire nerds like myself,” he said. “And we can’t say enough good things about our clients.”

Best Pueblo Dry Cleaner Stoehr Cleaners
For more than 100 years, Stoehr Cleaners has been keeping Pueblo residents looking fresh and clean. Kalijah Chavez, who owns three Stoehr locations in Southern Colorado, said she is honored to be recognized by Business Journal readers. “It’s awesome! We definitely get compliments on our customer service. We love our customers and know them,” she said. Chavez said one reason her business is so well known in the the area is that she keeps her business deeply involved in the community. That means providing dry cleaning services to organizations like the Pueblo Zoo and the Pueblo Police Department at a discount or for no charge at all.
Only three owners have taken the helm at Stoehr, and Chavez purchased the business within the past year. But she wasn’t new to the operation, having worked there since she was 17. Chavez said the same-day service and free business and residential delivery and pick-up are extras that set her business apart. “If it’s in by 10 [a.m.] it will be out by 4 [p.m.],” she said.

Best Pueblo Farmers Market Musso Farms
Musso Farms is a classic Southern Colorado farm family name, so well known for their chili peppers and fresh vegetables that local restaurants even feature Musso Farms peppers and vegetables by name as an ingredient on their menus. The family-owned business has been operational for five generations and counting. “We’re just a simple family-run farm that loves it,” said Carl Musso, one of the owners. “I’m the fourth generation and my son Rocky is fifth generation.” The Musso Farms farmers market features pumpkins, peppers, garlic, tomatoes, watermelons, potatoes, onions, limes, lemons, green beans, spices, flowers and more. “We do what we do because we love it. We don’t look for any recognition,” Musso said. “We love to grow the stuff and love people to eat the fresh vegetables we grow all summer long.” Musso Farms is located across from Pueblo County High School on Hillside Road. They also feature a “shop online” option at mussofarmschileroom.com for those who crave their famous chili peppers, but can’t make the drive. “That’s my reward, to see the people enjoying the fruits of our labor. The people are the real reward for us.”

Best Pueblo Food Truck Smokin D’s Barbecue
Smokin D’s Barbecue, the winner in this year’s Best Pueblo Food Truck category, is a family affair. Owned by Debbie Davidson, her husband Dennis Saldo, son Timmothy Ramirez, and his partner Nick Beattie, the truck has served “Southern Colorado barbecue” in the Steel City for just over a year. “These are all original recipes and we make everything from scratch,” Davidson said. “We’ve all had lots of barbecue in the South and the East, and we brought those ideas here, but we’re not like a Kansas City or Memphis barbecue.” Davidson said, for instance, their pulled pork is topped with a seared pork jelly and, since the truck recently began serving breakfast at 6 a.m. during the week, even the cinnamon roll flour is smoked for a unique flavor. Davidson, a special education teacher when not in the truck, has been in Colorado for about five years. Explaining she has a son who serves in the U.S. Marine Corps., Davidson said the truck offers a 30 percent discount to police, firefighters and military personnel. “We have great respect for what they do. They deserve to be honored,” she said. Davidson said being recognized as Pueblo’s best food truck instills a great sense of pride. “We work so hard to get the best-quality food we can possibly put out there. … It’s an honor to know people think this about us.”

Best Pueblo Hairstylist Barb Rivera
Barb Rivera says, “The world is a beautiful place. You just have to find the people who make it beautiful.” And, according to Business Journal readers, Rivera is one of those people. She won the Best Pueblo Hairstylist award for her work at her salon, Looks Beauty Salon and Barber, which she operates with one other stylist. Rivera began styling hair in Pueblo in 1993, after getting her start in Hawaii. Today, she has a roster of about 300 clients, some of whom have been with her since she opened. As for the award? “I am shocked!” she said. “It’s an honor. It’s really important to me people leave my salon feeling beautiful and better than they came in — in every way. Not just aesthetically, but spiritually and mentally.” When asked what sets her apart, Rivera said, “I’m just for real. I don’t mess around.”

Best Pueblo Home Improvement Company Peak Structural
Training, training, training. If you wonder how Peak Structural came to win Best Pueblo Home Improvement Company, it’s probably the training. “We train 2,400 hours a year — product training, customer service training,” said David Correa, marketing supervisor at Peak Structural, which is headquartered in Palmer Lake. “We have a market share along the Front Range of 84.3 percent,” Correa said. “That means 84.3 percent of those who need their foundation repaired or waterproofing in their home choose us, even with more than one bid. In fact, we encourage more than one bid.” Correa said the company prides itself on customer service.
“Obviously this is an honor,” he said of the recognition. “Our company’s sole focus is customer service and we’ve won a lot of awards for our customer service. That’s where we make our impact as a company.” The company has tripled its employee count over the past two years, and is continuing to grow, thanks to the leadership of Paul Sutton, pictured above. Correa said the company’s motto is, “Securing foundations for life.” “We want our customers to be comfortable in their homes,” Correa said. “Secure for life.”

Best Pueblo Pet Services Company Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (Pueblo Animal Services)
There is no denying that Coloradans love their pets, but that doesn’t mean they all get the care they deserve — and that’s where the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region comes in. Despite its name, the HSPPR is incredibly active not just in the Colorado Springs area, but in Pueblo as well. According to its 2016 annual report, the organization’s Pueblo Animal Services were responsible for the intake of 5,895 dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and rabbits last year — and 4,332 of those were successfully rehomed. “Since being invited to manage animal services and animal control in Pueblo in September of 2002, Pueblo Animal Services has made incredible strides in helping reduce pet overpopulation and increasing the quality of life for pets in Pueblo,” said Julie Justman, director of Pueblo Animal Services for HSPPR. Just like the HSPPR in Colorado Springs, the organization’s Pueblo branch offers services ranging from pet adoption to minor procedures such as microchip implantation and low-cost spay and neutering services. The Pueblo division also hosts events, such as the annual Pueblo Pet Check, during which animal owners can bring their pets in for a free wellness exam, as well as to receive rabies and distemper vaccinations. “Our staff and volunteers are passionate about helping animals and are truly dedicated to making Pueblo a better place for people and pets,” said Justman. “We are so thankful to be serving the Pueblo community every day.”

Best Pueblo Place for a Business Lunch Gus’s Place
Throughout the past eight decades, Gus’s Place has become a historic staple in the Pueblo food-and-beverage scene — serving everyone from steelworkers to business executives. “We’re the oldest bar in Pueblo,” owner Gino Mittino told the Business Journal in March. “We were the first bar to get a liquor license after Prohibition, and we’ve been continuously open since then. That makes 84 years — not bad!” The tavern is famous for its “Dutch Lunches,” which are made with locally sourced lunch meats, provolone, pickles, peppers and freshly baked bread from the nearby Zoelsmann’s Bakery, which has been open for 123 years. Gus’s came of age in the days of Colorado Fuel & Iron, which supplied the tavern with a consistent and hungry crowd of millworkers. “There were three shifts a day,” according to Mittino, “and I think there were 10,000-12,000 workers at the mill. Now, the blast furnaces are long gone, and there are just 1,000 workers or so, melting down scrap.” The mill now sits in a shadow of its former glory, but the same can’t be said for the historic tavern, which is listed on the Pueblo Register of Historic Places. The Register listing states: “1201 Elm Street has functioned as an important community gathering place since 1892. The building served as … an early AfricanAmerican church, and later as a Mesa Mission for immigrants … between 19101920. The current use as a neighborhood pub dates from 1934, the first year after Prohibition, and demonstrates the neighborhood and community’s dedication to this distinctive place.”

Best Pueblo Place for a Large Conference Pueblo Convention Center
Complacency isn’t the Pueblo Convention Center’s thing. Less than 20 years after construction was completed in 1997 on the 54,000-square-foot events venue, Pueblo leaders have led a charge to build a $23.4 million expansion that will nearly double its size, adding a 28,000-square-foot exhibit hall, an 18,000-square-foot sports performance center anchored by the Professional Bull Riders, a 500-space parking garage and a pedestrian “sky bridge.” The Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority voted unanimously in March to fund the project and subsequently issued a Request for Proposals seeking a design-build team for the expansion. Those amenities would add to the already accommodating facility, which currently houses 21,000 square feet of meeting space, an exhibit hall, a ballroom and lounge areas. The building, which is operated by Pennsylvania-based event venue management firm Spectra (owned by Comcast through its subsidiary Comcast Spectacor), is Pueblo’s preeminent location for business meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows and even weddings. In response to the organization’s winning the CSBJ’s Best in Business award, Pueblo Convention Center Spokesperson Joe Gonzales said, “We sincerely thank the Colorado Springs Business Journal for the nomination, and everyone who voted for us. The Pueblo Convention Center is very proud and humble to receive this award. The staff of the Pueblo Convention Center is challenged every day to think outside of the box and exceed expectations. This award provides an arrow, showing our staff we are headed in the right direction.”

Best Pueblo Place to Work Kaiser Permanente (Pueblo North Medical Offices)
California-based health care corporation Kaiser Permanente got its start at the tail end of World War II, when industrialist Henry Kaiser and physician Sidney Garfield merged their companies to create what would become an integrated managed care consortium. With roots planted firmly in the American war effort of the 1940s, Kaiser Permanente continues its dedication to service in communities such as Pueblo. From its Pueblo North Medical Offices, the company offers a variety of services for the surrounding community, including audiology, family medicine, internal medicine, sleep apnea treatment and more. But that’s not all they do — they’re also one of the area’s best employers. “We are thrilled to learn that our Pueblo North medical offices were selected as a finalist for CSBJ Best Pueblo Place to Work. This recognition shines the spotlight on our terrific staff in Pueblo who work tirelessly every day taking care of our members,” said Holly Kortum, executive director of Kaiser Permanente for Southern Colorado. “Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to creating and maintaining work environments where all employees are engaged, enabled and empowered to work together as a team.” “That is a great honor and we’re so proud of our staff,” Kortum added of the award. “Our people are the key to Kaiser Permanente’s success. Our goal is to support and help our workforce thrive, so we can deliver on our mission of providing high quality affordable health care and improving the health of the communities we serve.”

Best Pueblo Radio Station for Business KOA - 850 AM/94.1 FM
KOA News Radio — also known as “the Blowtorch of the West” — has been a staple along the Front Range since General Electric first began broadcasting from a 5,000-watt tower in Denver 93 years ago. But much has changed since 1924. The Class A clear-channel radio station — which is now available both on AM (850) and FM (94.1) — has a rich and storied history throughout Colorado, which has included becoming one of only 10 U.S. radio stations honored at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Awards for public service journalism. The station was also named Large Market Station of the Year in 2008 at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Marconi Radio Awards. On weekdays, KOA airs its news blocks during morning and afternoon drive times and features traffic updates in the Denver area. The station also airs sports coverage via Alan Roach, the stadium announcer for the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and the Colorado Avalanche. The station also features an evening sports talk segment and several nationally syndicated programs, including Rush Limbaugh, Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and America’s First News with Gordon Deal, as well as national and world news coverage by ABC News Radio. The station — now owned by iHeartMedia — has since raised the broadcasting power of its current Parker-based tower to 50,000 watts (the maximum power permitted by the Federal Communications Commission for AM stations), making it available on dials from Fort Collins to Pueblo.

Best Pueblo Restaurant/Bar Bingo Burger
When Richard Warner began selling his burgers in front of his wife’s Pueblo bakery during the 2007 Chile & Frijoles Festival, he had no idea his roasted chile-infused recipe would soon take the region by storm. “They became pretty popular,” said Bingo Burger Creative Director Ken Stacks. “So, after a few years, Richard decided he was on to something.” Ten years and many happy customers is all the proof he needed. Warner opened the first Bingo Burger location in Pueblo in 2010 and, after experiencing local success, decided to expand his business to Colorado Springs in 2014. “Our Springs [and Pueblo] customers really seem to appreciate the fact that we’re locally sourced, all the way from our burgers and buns up to our selection of Colorado craft beers,” Stacks said. The Pueblo location has been a local favorite since opening; it features a large outdoor patio and hosts a series of events throughout the summer, including live Photo by Ashleigh Hollowell
music on Friday and Saturday nights. “The goal is to make Bingo a fun place to be for the community, and not just a restaurant,” Stacks said. “And so far, I think we’re succeeding. We seem to have fiercely loyal clientele and it’s a great place to hang out.” With community popularity and economic success at both the Pueblo and Colorado Springs locations, Stacks said that he wouldn’t be surprised if the business soon grows to more locations. “Both have been growing like gangbusters, so my guess is more Bingos are on the way,” he said.

Best Pueblo Spa/Salon Alter Image
The sounds of scissors snipping and friendly conversation mixed with the smell of perfumed shampoos and nail lacquer can be found at most any salon and spa. However, according to Sole Loomis, co-owner of Alter Image Salon and Spa in Pueblo, a positive reputation throughout the region is what has led to the business’ success. Alter Image Salon and Spa offers a variety of beauty services, including haircuts and coloring, waxing, full manicures and pedicures, spray tans, chemical peels, eyelash extensions, facials, full body scrubs and microdermabrasion. “You have to hire slowly, make sure you have a great team and great talent to back you up,” Loomis said. The salon and spa, located off downtown Pueblo’s Main Street, has been open for five years. One Facebook user who wrote a review about Alter Image’s staff and services said, “Everyone here is so kind and talented! I’ve been going here for a little while and it’s always been affordable and I’ve always left happy.” “It’s not the owners that did it, it’s the total team. It’s an honor to us that we’ve got such a great reputation with the town and the Springs,” Loomis said.
Alter Image Pueblo’s Alter Image Salon and Spa is recognized as Pueblo’s Best Spa/Salon.

Best Pueblo TV Station for Business News FOX21
Since 2001, FOX21 News has been the go-to television news and weather resource for businesses in Southern Colorado — especially in the city of Pueblo. From an antenna perched atop Cheyenne Mountain, the TV station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week to Pueblo, Colorado Springs and all of Southern Colorado (air channel 21, Comcast channel 3, DirecTV channel 21, and Dish Network channel 21). Each week, the journalism powerhouse pumps out 38 hours of local news coverage, as well as syndicated FOX network shows and sporting events. Because of its dedication to serving the Pueblo business community, Best in Business voters this year have selected FOX21 as the best Pueblo TV station for business. “We are thrilled and humbled to receive this award from voters in Pueblo,” said News Director Joe Cole. “It shows viewers recognize the effort we are making to cover stories that matter to that community.” This year’s Best in Business award is far from the station’s first: FOX21 has won numerous awards for its programming, including the illustrious Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuing Coverage for their reporting on the 2012 Waldo Canyon fire in the Colorado Springs area. “[This award] truly does make us feel better to be recognized for the hard work we do as a news team,” said Marketing Manager James Muller.
