2017-18 FINE ARTS SERIES I am passionate about creating distinctive performing arts experiences for you. Two high school humanities teachers inspired my love for the arts. Through their invitation, I saw my first professional live orchestra, dance, theatre, and comedy. To this day, I remember how I felt during those experiences. My world opened and the joy of performing arts became a dear friend for life. An audience will always share something special during a live performance—the startle of surprise, the gasp from a daring leap, the awe of the encore. The CSB/SJU Fine Arts Series brings these shared experiences with the artistic distinction of a national stage right to your backyard. The artists are exceptional—and we’ve expanded the invitation. We have experiences for the whole family together, matinees to enjoy, and a performance that is sensory friendly. We invite you to embrace extra connections—invite your book group to

read and attend The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, sign up for fun pre-show events with Mike Super and The Rose Ensemble, and bring your ukulele to play-along with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain! You’ll find a tempting array of artists ahead. Indulge! Summer is the time to be an Early Bird—craft a year of your favorite experiences, choose your favorite seats, and of course—get more art (for free)! You can live out your inner hipster, rock date night, or share joy with a friend—all while supporting the arts you value. And we value you! We offer each of you and our dedicated sponsors a heartfelt ovation— your support makes it clear you believe in the impact of this Series in our lives and our community!
You are invited! I’ll see you at the show!

THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO LITERATURE TO LIFE
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27 • 7:30 PM
Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, Saint John’s University
LITERATURE TO LIFE is a theater company that specializes in adapting prize-winning books for the stage. This one-man play brings to life Junot Diaz’s poignant story, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Oscar is an overweight Dominican boy growing up in Paterson, New Jersey who obsesses over science fiction, falling in love, and the curse that has plagued his family for generations. Despite endless taunting, Oscar remains true to himself. This is a powerful tale of cultural identity, coming of age and the endless human capacity to persevere in the name of love.

BENEDICTINES AND BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH BOOKS Dr. Matthew Z. Heintzelman, Curator for the Austria/Germany Study Center; Curator for Rare Books and Manuscript Ever since Benedict first gave his Rule to his sixth-century monastic community, the Benedictines have been associated with books through reading, copying, collecting, and disseminating. This session will provide an opportunity to experience a selection of these books, dating from the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Along the way, we will consider ways in which books bring together and reinforce community, while also prompting us to look at our world in new ways.

CHE MALAMBO SATURDAY, MARCH 24 • 7:30 PM
Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, Saint John’s University
PEOPLE ARE TALKING Brinas’s men execute the pivots and footwork with exquisite — and mystifying — clarity. In theory, their feet should be a blur, but each moment is articulated. –The Boston Globe
THE LEGENDARY AGILITY, STRENGTH AND DEXTERITY of the gauchos (cowboys) of Argentina fueled the creation of malambo. What was once a fast-paced competition of precision footwork has grown into one of the world’s most visually stunning dance forms. It’s filled with power, passion and energy. Since 2007, it has been a growing global sensation thanks to the touring of Che Malambo – an all-male dance company created by noted French choreographer Gilles Brinas. Che Malambo will deliver a thrilling blend of masterful footwork, rhythmic stomping, drumming and song.
