The 2012- 2013 performing arts season opens with legendary blues man, Keb’ Mo’! Serving as a contemporary link to the seminal Delta blues that traveled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America, Keb’s music is an expression of the cultural journey that has transformed the blues over time. A three-time Grammy Award winner for Best Contemporary Blues Album, Keb’ Mo’ was a key figure in the acclaimed PBS series Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues. Hot Club of San Francisco Cinema Vivant Saturday, September 15 at 8:00 p.m. Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, SJU Imagine yourself in the idyllic French countryside in the 1930s. Sometime before dark, a gypsy caravan sets up camp in a field outside of town, luring the locals out for an evening’s fun. The Hot Club of San Francisco evokes Paris in the 1930s and offers a swinging beat with a sweet melody.

An exhilarating evening of Afro-Pop! The Acoustic Africa tour features three powerhouse performers from the African continent. Dobet Gnahore, the Ivory Coast vocalist and dancer, is known as one of the most vibrant performers in world music today. Bassist and vocalist Manu Gallo, also from the Ivory Coast, gained acclaim as the bassist for Zap Mama, whose own music draws on rhythms of West Africa as well as funk and R&B. Finally, Kareyce Fotso, a young Cameroonian singer, performs an intriguing combination of Afro-pop, blues, and traditional African music. David Wax Museum Friday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, SJU David Wax Museum performs music that is somehow familiar, as if it has always existed somewhere in our ether, but is at the same time undeniably fresh. Fusing traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock, David Wax Museum creates an utterly unique Mexo-Americana aesthetic. Combining Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, and donkey jawbone rattling, they have electrified audiences across the country. Accidental Hero Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. Colman Black Box Theater, CSB Written and performed by the grandson of a WWII hero, this performance tells the extraordinary true story of a modest farm boy from the Midwest who ended up liberating the very towns in Czechoslovakia where his grandparents once lived. Dave Holland Quintet Friday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. Gorecki Family Theater, CSB Touring with what can easily be argued as the best jazz band playing today, Dave Holland is a master of tone and rhythm. Holland got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the legendary Bitches Brew period. He has been a dominant voice in jazz since the 1970s but has never stopped evolving. Enjoy this all-star band, featuring tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, drummer Nate Smith and vibraphonist Steve Nelson, in the intimate cabaret setting of the Gorecki Family Theater. Dessa Friday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. Escher Auditorium, CSB Dessa, part of the hip-hop collective Doomtree, is a rapper, poet, and spoken word artist. Her work examines the nuances of the human condition with wit, tenderness, and candor. Part rap show, part cabaret, Dessa’s performances have earned praise from audiences and critics alike. Dessa has emerged on the national scene as a potent, imaginative lyricist and philosopher. Launched into the underground spotlight after releasing her debut album, A Badly Broken Code, Dessa returned with Castor the Twin, a softer, more organic version of her best material so far.

Diane Ackerman Friday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. Gorecki Family Theater, CSB Poet, essayist, and naturalist, Diane Ackerman is the author of two dozen highly acclaimed works of nonfiction and poetry, including the best-selling A Natural History of the Senses. Montana Repertory Theatre - Biloxi Blues Saturday, February 16 at 8:00 p.m. Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, SJU Set in World War II, this classic comedy by Neil Simon tells the story of Eugene Jerome, a 20-year-old army recruit from Brooklyn. Thought to be partly autobiographical, the play follows Eugene as he leaves home for the first time. Sent to Biloxi, Mississippi, Eugene must navigate boot camp – steering clear of his crazy drill sergeant as best he can – while learning about love and the harsher lessons of the world. Told with Simon’s characteristic humor and compassion, Biloxi Blues is a timeless coming-of-age story. In O(h)!, the dancers speak directly to the audience as they tear apart their process for making dances and offer honest insights into their limitations and fear of becoming unoriginal. Simon Shaheen Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. Gorecki Family Theater, CSB Simon Shaheen dazzles his listeners as he deftly leaps from traditional Arabic sounds to jazz and Western classical styles. His soaring technique, melodic ingenuity, and unparalleled grace have earned him international acclaim as a virtuoso on the oud and violin. Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers, and composers of his generation. Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker Friday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Gorecki Family Theater, CSB In his youth, Chet Baker was described as the “James Dean of jazz.” Biographer James Gavin might argue he was really more like its Elvis. Baker brought jazz into the mainstream and made it cool. This performance is based on Gavin’s biography of the jazz giant and features CSB/SJU’s own Dale White on trumpet with jazz vocalist Spider Saloff. Gavin provides narrated excerpts of Deep in a Dream – The Long Night of Chet Baker, his biography that traces Baker’s life from his early triumphs to his tragic death. Enjoy this performance in true cabaret style, with drink service throughout. This fall internationally renowned artist Patrick Dougherty will spend three weeks in residency at the Saint John’s Arboretum creating a monumental outdoor sculpture made of sustainably-harvested saplings, which will grace the Arboretum landscape for at least two years.
