I am so inspired by and appreciative of all the Crosby Scholars staff, led by our outstanding President and CEO Mona Lovett. Our wonderful team goes above and beyond every day to encourage students to do well in school, to understand their post-secondary education options, and to execute a plan. I am extremely thankful for all of our donors who fund this important work, and for our partners at Goodwill Industries of NWNC Crosby Scholars could not accomplish what we do without you
I’d like to share why I support Crosby Scholars A college or post-secondary degree can influence not just the life of that single student, but of all future generations of his or her family The emphasis on learning, problem-solving and achievement, along with the expanded career opportunities and increased earning potential, can change the trajectory of an entire family tree I am very fortunate to be the daughter of two first generation college students In fact, my parents met in college But they each found out about college almost accidentally
My mother is the daughter of farmers who made the move to machine shop factory work. There was no expectation my mother would go to college – her older sister had not. But in high school, she had a friend group who did plan to go to college. She learned about it from them, got the crazy idea to go herself, and worked many jobs to pay for it. My father had an even more unusual path to college. He went to trade school and planned to be a printer like his father. He was an excellent student, but never considered college, and he graduated high school with a full-time apprenticeship operating a line-o-type machine. The summer AFTER he graduated, his English teacher called him to say that her alma mater was looking for more students and asked if he would be interested. He decided to take a couple of classes in the fall to see if he liked it He loved it and was hooked It took him five years working full time at night as a printer to graduate with a degree in economics He earned scholarships for an MBA and a PhD from the University of Chicago and he became a university professor and famous financial economist I have benefited immensely from the fact that my mother had college-bound friends in high school, and that my father’s English teacher called him I wonder at how different my life would have been if they had never learned about college
Every day, the Crosby Scholars program is encouraging students to think about their plans after high school from as early as 6th grade And a large number of our seniors, 36%, are the first in their family to attend college Crosby makes them aware of their post-secondary education opportunities: two and four year college programs, accreditations and apprenticeships. Each student, with his or her family, chooses what is right for their skill-set, interests and situation. With Crosby’s help, they can learn about the options open to them and about the complicated process to apply and afford further education. Educating potential first-generation students that the college option exists can have dramatic impacts not just for the student, but on their family for generations to come.

Kathryn Crosby’s life was a testament to compassion, service, and a deep commitment to empowering youth. Her dedication to the Crosby Scholars Program and the students it serves remains a guiding force in all that we do. Kathryn believed deeply in the transformative power of education and took pride in knowing that she played a role in helping students achieve their dreams. Kathryn moved the Crosby National Celebrity Golf Tournament to Bermuda Run in 1986, setting the stage for what would become a lasting legacy in our community. As Mona W. Lovett, President and CEO expressed:
We are forever grateful that Kathryn chose Bermuda Run to host the tournament. Her decision brought tremendous opportunity to our community, and her belief in the power of education continues to transform lives. Kathryn understood that this program would help open doors for thousands of young people, and her legacy lives on in every student.
The Kathryn Crosby Scholarship for Excellence, established as part of the $10 million Achieve. Apply. Afford. Campaign, honors Kathryn’s commitment to education. This renewable scholarship is awarded to five outstanding Crosby Scholars graduates each year, ensuring that her spirit and generosity will continue to impact future generations of students.
As Tariana, the 2024 recipient of the Kathryn Crosby Scholarship for Excellence, shared:
As a first-generation college student, Crosby Scholars gave me the advice I hadn’t yet received in life. My advisor helped me feel confident in my ability to succeed and showed me consistent faith, interest, and encouragement. Through volunteer opportunities, I realized the importance of giving back to the community, which has influenced the career I want to pursue.
Another scholarship recipient, Zabdiel, reflected on the lasting impact of Crosby Scholars:
Crosby Scholars has given me the academic tools necessary to further my education and my life, and they have given me an enormous amount of support. Looking back, joining Crosby Scholars was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Kathryn Crosby’s influence extended far beyond her role in the tournament. She was a passionate advocate for students, always eager to know how many were being served and how many were heading to college. As we look to the future, we are proud to see her daughter, Mary Crosby, continuing that legacy by attending the Crosby Scholars Invitational and carrying forward the cherished tradition. Her presence ensures that the Crosby spirit continues to inspire and guide our students.
Kathryn’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication will forever be remembered and celebrated. Her life reminds us of the power of believing in others and the profound impact one individual can have on countless lives. We celebrate Kathryn Crosby for her boundless heart, her commitment to opening doors of opportunity, and the lasting legacy she leaves behind in our community.
Thank You Kathryn Crosby
As the Achieve. Apply. Afford. Capital Campaign approaches its final stages, the impact of these contributions is already being felt across our programs. With $9.6 million raised, we are making significant progress toward our $10 million goal. This achievement reflects the generosity and dedication of our supporters, though we recognize that more work remains to reach our target.
Thanks to this campaign, several key expansions have taken shape. A major milestone is the expansion of Junior Advising to every public high school in Forsyth County. Starting in the junior year, rather than the senior year, allows students earlier access to the guidance and resources needed to plan for their futures—whether they pursue college or another career path.
We have also introduced CrosbyConnect, our new student portal. This platform makes it easier for students to track their progress, register for events, and connect with advisors, ensuring that each scholar can receive the support they need in a more accessible and streamlined way.
While we are proud of the progress we’ve made, we know that reaching our ultimate goal will require continued support and effort. As we look ahead, your contributions remain crucial in helping us sustain and grow these programs for our students.

Did You Know? Crosby Scholars is +
At Crosby Scholars, we understand that not all students will follow the same path after high school, especially as more young people opt out of traditional college programs. Our For Life Pathway was designed to ensure that students who choose alternative routes are still supported, have a plan in place, and are equipped with the skills they need to succeed. Without a clear path, many students risk falling behind. We work to bridge that gap by providing guidance, career exposure, and hands-on experiences through partnerships with Forsyth Tech, Vulcan, and other local organizations. David Martinez’s story is one that truly embodies the purpose of the For Life Pathway.
Growing up in Winston-Salem, David was uncertain about his future after high school. College didn’t feel like the right fit, but he also knew he needed a plan if he wanted to move forward with purpose. Crosby Scholars helped him clarify his interests and map out a realistic career path.
Reflecting on his journey, David shared, “Crosby helped me see that I didn’t have to follow the same path as everyone else. They gave me the confidence to find my own way and the tools to make it happen.”
Through Crosby’s advising, David discovered welding—a field that aligned with his practical skills and desire for a hands-on career. Once enrolled in a welding program at Forsyth Tech, he found both a sense of direction and satisfaction in building something tangible.
“The biggest role Crosby played for me was in planning,” David explained. “I didn’t know where to start. Crosby didn’t just give me a list of options; they helped me figure out what I wanted and how to take steps toward that.”
Today, David sees the For Life Pathway as a bridge to self-discovery and independence. The confidence and clarity he gained have redefined his idea of success, empowering him to shape his own future. David’s journey highlights the impact of support and direction, helping students overcome barriers and pursue their goals with confidence.
The LIGHHT Program (Leadership, Integrity, Goals, Honesty, Healing, Triumph), launched in 2023 by Crosby Scholars, is dedicated to fostering educational success for youth in foster care. Backed by a $500,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, this five-year initiative directly addresses the unique challenges faced by foster care students, offering comprehensive support as they transition through middle and high school.
Youth in foster care often experience instability and uncertainty, making it difficult to focus on their education. The LIGHHT Program provides a consistent support system, offering one-on-one mentorship, college readiness advising, and life skills workshops to ensure these students have a pathway to higher education and beyond.

Whether it’s through navigating the complexities of college applications or understanding financial aid, the program equips foster youth with the resources needed to succeed.
One LIGHHT participant shared: “The support I received from LIGHHT made me feel like my future mattered. Having someone guide me through college tours and applications was more than I could’ve asked for. I finally feel like I have a chance to achieve my dreams.”
The program goes beyond just academic support. In collaboration with other foster care organizations, workshops are being held for foster parents to help them understand how to assist their children in pursuing post-secondary opportunities. The program also ensures continued support for students who move outside of Forsyth County.
As Mona W. Lovett, President and CEO of Crosby Scholars, stated: “We are proud to stand alongside foster youth and help them achieve their post-secondary goals. Through LIGHHT, we aim to create lasting impact, ensuring foster care students have the opportunity to realize their dreams.”
This initiative not only empowers youth in care but also serves as a beacon of hope, paving the way for brighter futures for these students.
