Looking after your body! Is there more than one type of skin cancer? Skin Cancer can be divided into two types, Melanoma and Non-Melanoma. Melanoma skin cancer has increased markedly over the last half century since accurate recording began. The highest incidence of Malignant Melanoma is found in Queensland, Australia where light skinned people receive a great deal of sun exposure. Melanoma accounts for only 6% of all skin cancers but this type is most likely to be fatal. Melanoma is a challenge to cure once it has spread to other parts of the body but it is easily treated if found in the early stages of growth. Approximately 1 in 90 Canadian women will develop melanoma during their lifetime compared to 1 in 74 Canadian men. Non-Melanoma skin cancers are much more common and usually develop later in life on parts of the skin that have been repeatedly sun exposed. Two common non-melanoma cancers are basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). These skin cancers grow slowly and rarely cause death as they do not normally spread throughout the body. They can still cause severe disfigurement if not treated in a timely fashion. Early detection is the key to successfully treating both types of skin cancer. The classic five warning signs (see below) should always be followed. Contact your physician if you answer yes to any of these questions. A) ASYMMETRY - do the two halves of the lesion not match? B) BORDERS - is the border of the lesion uneven? C) COLOUR - is there more than one colour? D) DIAMETER - is the diameter greater than 6mm? E) EVOLUTION - has the size, shape, colour or height changed? Does it bleed?

So who has the musical talent in our family? The answer is Dallas. Devon just likes to pretend.
Left to right: Dallas, Laurel and Devon.
Ever wonder where people get the inspiration to do what they do? I have always admired people with talent and wondered when and how they first discovered it. What makes a painter paint? Where does a piano teacher’s passion come from? Talent comes in many forms, and in this issue we are sharing some of the Okanagan’s gifted individuals and groups with you. Elvis is alive and once a year he enjoys spending time in Penticton. The Penticton Elvis Society celebrates 10 YEARS of running the PENTICTON ELVIS FESTIVAL that brings Elvis Presley fans from far and wide to celebrate the King of Rock and Roll! If you have never been to the festival, make sure to put it on your to-do list for June 24-26 (page 26). Sharing one’s talent with others happens on many levels. Sylvia Clerk has spent a lifetime as a piano teacher and loves all that she does (page 36). Some of us are talented in the kitchen. Our recipe section this time features the winning dish from the 2010 Stone Soup Event hosted by Kelowna Gospel Mission. Some of Kelowna’s finest chefs come together each year to help those in need, so they are not only sharing their time but also their talent (page 42). One thing that has always been a passion for me is community. So, for this issue, it is only fitting that our “angels among us” salute the volunteers from Kelowna Community Theatre. When they donate their time they get to enjoy all the talent that comes to the theatre. 4
The other thing we are sharing in this issue are all the photos from our “my grandchild is cuter than your grandchild” contest. We received more than 100 photos... not all could be published in the magazine, so we’ve put them on our website for the world to see how cute the grandkids of the Okanagan are. Check them out at www.beyond50mag.com. Thanks to everyone who sent in photos of their beautiful grandchildren. I guess you could say that all of the entries are very talented at looking “cute and adorable.” So what is Beyond 50’s talent? I would have to say it is sharing as much as we can, when we can and paying tribute to this amazing community. It’s wonderful to publish stories on local people and make them proud of all they do.We are heading into our fifth year and we are grateful to all who have shared their tales, their knowledge and/or talents with you,our readership. We are excited about 2011 and we hope you keep reading, keep sharing and keep supporting the advertisers that support us.And when you are finished with your copy of Beyond 50, please share it with someone else. Laurel D’Andrea
ABOUT THE COVER: Our cover features three local men who share a passion for Elvis; Chris Kelso, Joe Kelso & Adam Fitzpatrick have all been finalists in past Penticton festivals. They now perform together under the name of “Elvis Generations”- check out their website www.elvisgenerations.com BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011
What will you leave behind?
The gift of a lifetime Dick and Jean Hall were longtime Kelowna residents who left a legacy to the Central Okanagan Foundation that will support charitable groups in our area forever. Because it is endowed, Dick and Jean’s gift will provide a growing source of community funding for their favourite local charities including those in the arts, music, healthcare, animal welfare, and other community initiatives. Before she passed on, Jean often commented, “Although we never had children of our own; I like knowing that when I’m gone, our legacy will be helping others strengthen our community.”
BEQUEST BY WILL
Including a charitable bequest in your will is a simple way to make a lasting gift to your community. When you make this gift through your community foundation, we establish a special fund that benefits the community forever and becomes your personal legacy of giving. How it works • You include the Central Okanagan Foundation in your will as a bequest; we can help you or your lawyer with recommended language. • We can work with you to determine the type of fund you would like to establish with your gift. You choose your charities or areas of interest. • Upon your death, we set up a special fund in your name, in the name of your family, or in honour of any person or organization you choose. Your charitable gift is eligible for a tax credit for estate tax purposes.

Dragon boating is the wor ld ’s fastest growing water sport. Dragon boats have been popular for centuries in Asian ...
Macau, China EDBRC Premiere Men's 500m Final.
We all know how difficult it is to stay active during the winter months. It’s been proven that exercise helps combat winter depression and seasonal disorders. With exercise, you will be healthier and happier in these months, which are normally the hardest for people to enjoy. So no matter what you do, make sure you’re doing something active. With a few helpful tips, I hope to help you make good on your new year’s resolution to become healthier and happier. 1. Do something active every day. For many, the winter season is often the hardest time of the year to be motivated. It is important to do something active every day. It might mean taking the steps at home or work. Make a trip to the mall and walking a few laps while window-shopping. Something is always better than nothing, and you’ll start to notice that the little things add up quickly. 2. Eat the colours of a rainbow. Enjoy the fruits and vegetables of our world to attain perfect health. The rainbow symbolizes good news, hope, redemption and the ending of gloom. Hope that the snow and rain is going away for good. As each of you chose life and health after feeling the dark clouds of gloom in your life, choosing to eat the colours of the rainbow also brings health and wellness! 3. Jam-out while you workout. One of the best parts of going to the gym is throwing on your iPod and listening to fabulous tunes that get you pumped up and ready to go. Let the music carry you along with its energy to a great workout. Build a few great playlists that get you excited to get to the gym. 6
4. Make your goal specific. Instead of resolving to “work out more,” promise yourself you’re going to “go to the gym four times a week” or “do a set of sit-ups before work every day.” If you have a firm resolution, it’ll be harder to break. And if you make a vow to work out with a friend or hire a personal trainer, you will have a motivator there to make sure you follow through. Don’t give yourself an unrealistic goal; instead, make a solid commitment that brings you toward that ultimate goal of feeling great. 5. Train for something new, like Dragon Boat racing! Dragon boating is the world’s fastest growing water sport. Dragon boats have been popular for centuries in Asian countries and in recent years have been celebrated in festivals around the world. In Canada, you’ll find dragon boats on the water from Vancouver and Edmonton to Toronto, Kelowna, Banff and Montreal. There are many different levels of recreational to competitive teams. Grand Masters are 50-plus, so any age can join. Dragon boats carry a team of 20 paddlers plus a drummer and steersperson! ALVA WONG, Health Center Manager/Strength and Conditioning Coach/Personal Trainer at World Gym Fitness Center. Coach and paddler at the World Championships of Dragon Boat Racing in Macau, China 2010 & Championships for Commonwealth Countries in Penang, Malaysia 2010 with the Edmonton Dragon Boat Racing Club (EDBRC). Being Talented is Good for Your Health Submitted by Dr Wayne Terai
When I think of talented individuals, I think of Elvis, Michael Jordan, and Picasso. Well, I may not be talented in that sense. My kids beg me NOT to sing. I can dunk a donut, but not a basketball. And, they won’t be framing my artwork from Pictionary anytime soon! But the true definition of talent is this: having “special natural ability or aptitude.” In that sense, each and everyone of us is talented! Probably more than we ourselves realize. Did you know that research has shown our brains can hold 100,000 MB of information - the equivalent of 500,000 sets of Encyclopedia Brittanica? An average heart pumps 2,100 gallons of blood daily, and our lungs breathe 78
Burtch Chiropractic
million gallons of air in a lifetime. We can make eight million red blood cells... every second! Yes, every second! That’s a whole lot of amazing work that our bodies do - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year! And THAT, in my mind, is a whole lot of talent! You may say to yourself: “Self: ‘Breathing isn’t really a talent. Your heart pumping isn’t really a talent.’” Well, tell that to someone who needs a ventilator to breath. Tell that to someone who needs a pacemaker in order to stay alive. So what runs and coordinates all of this? It’s the nervous system: the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. In order for you to express all this “natural” talent, your brain has to communicate effectively with the rest of the body through your spinal cord and nerves. If it can’t, you lose all those natural talents - including your strength, stamina, and coordination. So, keep this in mind: the next time you want to swing your club like Tiger Woods, or makeover your home like Martha Stewart, half the battle is ensuring your brain can communicate with your body, through your spine and nerves. Visit your local doctor of Chiropractic, who is a specialist in spinal function. DR. WAYNE TERAI is Advanced Proficiency Rated in Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique and also a Certified Laser Therapist. He has been helping Okanagan residents live an active healthy life for over 15 years.

Determination Leads to Transformation… By Design Submitted by Errol N. Hannigan
Body by Design harnesses the power of motivation and community to turn health and fitness goals into realities.
A few weeks after making those New Year’s weight loss resolutions many Canadians are now finding it difficult to maintain their enthusiasm sometimes feeling so worn down by the daily grind that they lack the drive needed to attain their goals. What started out as an inferno of determination has now dwindled down to a few cinders of desire. I know exactly how that feels. When I first began to lose weight, I had problems trying to stay motivated. But I found by reading about others who had walked the fitness path before me, those feelings could be overcome. The important thing is not to give in or give up and to master any and all negative thoughts. I was inspired to continue my journey and I was able to reignite my passion. That is why I suggest people take a look at the new weight loss and fitness book Body by Design. A bestseller on Amazon.com’s Exercise and Fitness, Healthy Living, and Weight Loss categories, Body by Design was written by Kris Gethin, Editor-in-Chief of Bodybuilding.com. It’s about a revolutionary 12-week diet and exercise program backed by real-life success stories - including those of my wife Judi and myself. We both have the extreme privilege of being in the book. Bodybuilding.com is home to BodySpace, the world’s leading online fitness community offering a powerful blend of motivational, informational, and nutritional resources to over 690,000 members encompassing all age groups. Even with hundreds of thousands of remarkable BodySpace BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011
Members, Judi and I have been told that our stories and our efforts to help others in their journeys stand out from the crowd. Body by Design isn’t your ordinary fitness transformation book. It begins by changing you from the inside out, starting with the very thoughts in your head and working its way to the muscles on your body and the food on your plate. Body by Design harnesses the power of motivation and community to turn health and fitness goals into realities. It’s not just a New Year’s transformation - it’s a forever transformation. If your ambition is waning, I suggest you have a look at Body by Design and read about people who have had the similar real-life struggles and obstacles as and learn how they found the incentive to overcome these challenges to achieve their body transformation goals. Equally, if you have been putting off losing weight and getting into shape, there is never a better time like the present - even if you don’t think the timing is perfect. There will always be challenges and less than ideal conditions. Body by Body By Design will show you that with each step you take, you will grow stronger, more skilled, more successful and more self confident. Begin your fitness journey by taking the first step right now! Remember, I’m pulling for you, we’re all in this together. ERROL N. Fitting Into Those Old Jeans! Submitted by Evonne Dolphin
Ladies of Kelowna, I’m taking one for the team and baring all in the name of research. You can thank me later... I’m in my early 50s and the last few years I’ve noticed some disturbing changes in my body. Gone is the tight smooth skin, here is the sagging dimpled skin. And where did this belly come from? Being a woman of action I decided to seek some non-invasive options to help with these unsightly changes. Advantage Body Clinic Ltd. offers slimming and cellulite treatments using the VelaShape II and the Zerona laser. After
a very thorough consultation, I knew these treatments were perfect for me. As a business consultant my time is spent sitting in meetings or in front of a computer. Last summer I was embarrassed to go boating and golfing because of cellulite. I ski in winter, but when the weather warms up thanks to Advantage Body - I’ve got the look I need to feel confident on the course and in the water. After finishing the LipoShape package, which combined the VelaShape II and the Zerona, I’m very happy with my results. I wasn’t expecting to be on the next cover of Sports Illustrated, but I did want to look and feel really good in a swimsuit this summer. I lost 7.5 inches over all and my skin is much smoother and firmer. Want to fit into that old pair of jeans someday? So did I and now I do! EVONNE DOLPHIN is a Certified Executive coach and change consultant. She lives in Kelowna with her three children and is currently completing a Leadership Master's Degree.

Humour Helps Make the Breast of Bad Situation Submitted by Michele Morris
Michele on her way to the OR.
There are many stops along the way when riding the positive train in the fight against breast cancer. Some
points may be easier to visit than others, but each has its own purpose in the healing process. My journey began after I was diagnosed and my family physician put the wheels in motion for my treatment. I have been blessed to have a GP who provides exceptional medical care. His expertise, combined with his warmth and genuine manner, has made this diagnosis easier to accept and comprehend. Through the years we have come to know each other well. He laughs at my jokes and gets all of my quirks. And the fact that he is devastatingly handsome makes him the original Dr. McDreamy! But I digress... The first step in my treatment was a
referral and consultation with a surgeon. I heard that some surgeons may lack bedside manner but this was not my experience. Mine presented all the surgical options available to me.He had compassion and an understanding of how overwhelming a woman may feel at her breast cancer diagnosis. There is an emotional element to having one’s breasts surgically altered. The initial thought may be “do what needs to be done, just get the tumours and all this poison out of me.” But it is not that simple. As women, we are often defined by the physical and it takes courage, knowledge and faith to make decisions that will change your appearance forever. I felt empowered that I had options regarding the type of surgical treatment that was available to me. Armed with current medical information and after lengthy discussions, I was able to be at peace with my decisions. I had full confidence in my surgeon and, as I was wheeled into the OR, my last words to him were,“Remember,my breasts are in your hands, and I haven’t said that since the 80s!!” I heard the

laughter as I drifted into lala land. My last thought was, “Remove the tumour, but not my humour.” I think one of the biggest fears around breast cancer surgery is not the surgery itself. It’s finding out if the cancer has spread and this is a difficult waiting game.We wait with anticipation for the pathology report. It is only then that the bigger picture is revealed and a game plan for treatment can be proposed. I am very grateful to my surgeon and his team for bringing me through the first stage of my treatment. I may not have the breasts that I once had but quite frankly what woman in her fifties does?” So as the positive train pulls out of the station in “Surgeryville” and heads towards “Chemotown,” I remain optimistic. I am traveling with those whose love and support is steadfast, as I am steered forward to places unknown. I am scared but determined to arrive at the next destination with a positive attitude, hoping to share some laughs along the way.

Peace of Mind When it’s Needed Most Submitted by Susan Steen
As with all our services, our bereavement support is free of charge and is offered one-to-one, in group settings and is available to family, friends, and caregivers.
“You matter because you are.You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, so that you may die peacefully and we will do all we can to help you live until you die.” Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement
The focus of the Hospice/Palliative care program is caring, not curing - concentrating on life, not death. But the quality of life, family wellness, personal dignity are also part of Hospice’s compassion and support. Our Hospice Association serves individuals in Hospice House, but we also serve individuals and families in their homes, at Kelowna General Hospital and in long-term care facilities. In addition, the Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) is the only association of its kind in British Columbia which offers vigil services on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis. This service is provided by specially-trained volunteers. The more than 250 active volunteers who help to provide palliative, vigil, bereavement, office, help desk, garden, fundraising and angel fund services are dedicated and committed. They offer their time and talents to ensure that individual and family needs are met before, during and after the Hospice experience. In 2010, more than 20,000 volunteer hours were provided in both direct and indirect services to those in need. COHA is pleased to be a partner with Interior Health in providing the best service we can to those in our area, from Peachland to Oyama. This is an incredible partnership and collaboration which, with increasingly heavy demands on Hospice/Palliative care, only strengthen our commitment 18
and the quality of service we can provide to the community we serve. As with all our services, our bereavement support is free of charge and is offered one-to-one, in group settings and is available to family, friends, and caregivers. This year, COHA will be offering two outstanding bereavement presentations to the community. The first on April 7, at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre, will present Dr. Phyllis Silverman, author and international speaker, professor emerita at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals, an Associate in Social Welfare in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School - to name a few of her accomplishments. Dr. Silverman will be bringing her considerable expertise to provide practical insights for those who are grieving. The second, Dr. Nancy Reeves, PHD, R. Psych and bestselling Canadian author of A Path Through Loss, will present on August 19 at 7:00pm at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre. Dr. Reeves has worked in the area of trauma and teaches the graduate Grief and Loss Counselling Course at the University of Victoria. For information please contact the Central Okanagan Hospice Association at 250-763-5511 or visit our website: www.hospicecoha.org This is SUSAN’S third time in Kelowna. Her return to Kelowna as Executive Director with the Central Okanagan Hospice Association has provided the “job of a lifetime.” She is working with a dedicated, committed team of volunteers and staff who provides the comforts and special touches for those in hospice care. Teeth Cleaning for Rover Submitted by Cindy Mallach
Research shows that proper oral care can add two to four years to your pet’s life.
Kelo
We all know the importance of healthy teeth and gums for ourselves, but what about for our pets? While most people brush their teeth twice a day, most pets rarely see a toothbrush and live with bad breath, tartar buildup, and gum disease. Gum disease can not only cause infection, pain, and tooth loss, but can also lead to heart, lung, kidney, and liver damage. Research shows that proper

oral care can add two to four years to your pet’s life. It’s very important to have a complete oral exam by your veterinarian at every wellness check to rule out infection and disease. Once tartar begins to build up under the gum line, surgery is often needed to remove the tarter and compromised teeth. But how can we keep Rover’s mouth clean in the first place? That’s where
CINDY MALLACH specializes in oral hygiene for your dog. She also carries a line of fresh breath products including Oxyfresh Oral Hygiene Solution. Viva Penticton!
Graceland of the Northwest Submitted by Terry Michels
The Penticton festival is the only Elvis Presley Enterprises sanctioned event of its kind in Canada, west of the Collingwood Elvis Festival in Ontario.
Ben Klein 2005 Winner, Professional Division.
Once a year, the City of Penticton becomes the jumpsuit capital of the world. The streets are overtaken by men and women of all shapes and sizes, sporting flashy bejewelled bell bottom garments, cut low to their bellies and cinched around their middles with belt buckles the size of plates. This curious-looking posse will wink and sneer and gyrate their hips wildly making it look like they’re having a seizure. We are talking, of course, about the Penticton Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival, when sideburns, pompadours and white polyester are, for a brief time, back in fashion. The Penticton festival is the only Elvis Presley Enterprises sanctioned event of its kind in Canada, west of the Collingwood Elvis Festival in Ontario. After emceeing the Collingwood Festival, Tom Shields, who was the Mayor of Osoyoos at the time, approached then Mayor of Penticton, Mike Pearce, to ask if he thought Penticton was a suitable site for an Elvis Festival in western Canada. James Schewe 2003 Amateur Champion. Together, they put the plans and a team in 26
place. The Penticton Elvis Festival Society was approved in October 2001 and the first festival was hosted in June 2002. That first year saw competitions held at three different venues - Gyro Park and Cherry Lane in Penticton, and Desert Park in Osoyoos. Even though the logistics of transporting the tribute artists between the venues were a challenge, the atmosphere was electric. The first festival included special guests Joe Esposito, Elvis’ best friend and road manager; D.J.Fontana, Elvis’ drummer from 1954 to 1968; and Darwin Lamm, Publisher of Elvis...The Magazine. The first Saturday night headliner was tribute artist Stephen Kabakos with his back-up band. Stephen set a standard that has been maintained year after year. That year local artist Larry Hunters’ of 8’ by 12’ rendition of Elvis on canvas was unveiled. And for an April Fools’ joke, the BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011

And You Thought You Couldn’t Do It! Submitted by Elaine Crebo
Doris has gained confidence and enjoyment though the development of technique; evoking praise from her teacher for her diligence.
Student Doris Mast with Teacher Elizabeth Wocks.
Think you’re past your prime to learn a musical instrument? Pssst, don’t tell that to Doris Mast. Well into her 70s, this determined woman fulfilled a life-long dream of purchasing a grand piano and then learned how to play it! Doris’ introduction to the piano began in Germany when, as a child, she took several years of informal lessons
from a singer who lived in the same block of flats. Fast forward to her 20s, and a move to Canada, whereupon Doris’ husband bought her a piano. For the next four decades, Doris was selftaught, playing for her own pleasure but with no formal instruction. It was with the purchase of the grand piano in November 2008 that

Doris felt she needed to take lessons; both to reach her own potential, as well as to do justice to her prized instrument. Studying with Elizabeth Wocks at the Kelowna Community Music School, Doris has gained confidence and enjoyment though the development of technique; evoking praise from her teacher for her diligence. Aside from the benefits of keeping her mind active through learning, Doris’ greatest pleasure is the satisfaction of playing a piece the way it was meant to be expressed. A vibrant 51 year old, Karen Rush accepted a challenge from her younger sister and is taking the musical dare to heart! Karen was convinced that playing the piano was too hard - “two different hands doing two different things at the same time!” - and that reading music was next to impossible. However, her sister’s challenge inspired Karen to evaluate recreational options and to consider exploring new interests. Having danced in her youth but aware of the sport’s physical limitations, Karen felt that refocusing her musicality onto the piano would be something that she could do for herself - a source of pleasure that could be enjoyed for the rest of her life. first and is thrilled with her decision to take up the challenge. As a working professional, Karen has found her daily piano practice to be a kind of personal meditation, a time each day in which she can focus solely on the music. It’s a delicious interlude in an otherwise busy life. In addition to an awareness of the long-term benefits of challenging the brain, Karen is most thrilled with the joy of just being able to make music. Thanks sis! Wendy Robertson, Executive Director of the Kelowna Community Music School, is seeing an increase in the number of mature adults who have either returned to, or are taking music lessons for the first time, in a variety of instruments and voice. “Music is a wonderful medium to explore, and often with more time to pursue personal interests, lessons at this stage of life provide an opportunity to discover a new dimension of their future. Everybody is welcome to explore the joy of music - from children to grandparents!”

At The Evans Fischer Gallery you can visit with the silly little bouncing foals following their mothers and admire elegant Arabian busts.
TERRY ISAAC’s photorealistic wildlife paintings are definitely a sight to be seen. Terry states that “To be a good artist, you need to be a good observer.” The products of his observations are candid snapshots of nature’s magical moments. Terry’s work has been featured in many bird, wildlife and painting technique books. The Evans Fischer Gallery is proud to display a wonderful selection of Terry’s work.
The Evans Fischer Art Gallery and Framing Friendly & Informal Amanda and Wayne invite you to enjoy new works including ceramics and contemporary craft. Consider us for your home décor and framing needs and don’t forget to ask us about our new Corporate Leasing Program! UPCOMING EVENTS:
LUCY COLLINGS paints “en plain air,” a French expression used to describe painting in the outdoors. Being immersed in natural light is important to impressionist painters like Lucy. “I paint to celebrate the beauty and variety of nature.” Her relatively small, yet visible brush strokes expressed in a bright and varied use of color create a play of light. The Evans Fischer Gallery is very proud to represent this accomplished artist.

Cultivating Okanagan Talent
t h e wo r k o f a r t
Submitted by Amanda Fischer
The allure of Okanagan life is credited to its many gifts. Among them is the bounty of local artists. The talent flourishes here and is appreciated and cultivated by many institutions. I am inspired daily by the Central Okanagan’s advocacy for the arts. I recently attended the opening reception for Printmaking, an exhibit of student work at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The exhibit was a collaboration between the gallery and UBCO. This partnership demonstrates how the Okanagan nurtures its talent at the student level. It doesn’t stop there. A myriad of organizations like the Central Okanagan FCA are filled with talented painters, potters, dancers, crafters, etc. In addition are the abundant resources offered by operations like the Rotary Centre for the Arts and the Arts Council, which facilitate the growth of our local talent and offer a stage for it to be shared. We at the Evans Fischer Gallery enjoy cooperating with other commercial galleries downtown. It is a pleasure to showcase and support both rising and well-established local artists.
BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011
This spring, we are again pairing the talent of our artists with the gifts of our local wineries. Wine Tasting is an Art is one of The Okanagan Wine Festival’s premiere-class events. Along with Picture Perfect, Turtle Island Gallery and A Woodside Design Gallery, we will be offering an evening full of pleasures for all of the senses featuring wine, refreshments, music and local art work. So, mark your calendar and do your part to support Okanagan talent!

its own signature brand of “innoclassical” dance. The power, grace, and beauty of the dancers are only achieved through dedication, hard work and an unyielding commitment to excellence. The driving force behind this determination is David LaHay, the company’s founding artistic director. The company currently features six young, dedicated artists who hone their skills and talent throughout the year under David’s direction. The dancers bring the stories and music to life on the stage, moving audiences with their athleticism, artistry and passion for dance. David enjoyed a long and successful career as principal dancer with numerous Canadian ballet troupes before turning his hand to an illustrious teaching career. As artistic director of Ballet Kelowna, he has choreographed many original works to wide public and critical acclaim, and staged works from the classical repertoire, as well as contemporary ballets. Actions Consequences, the company’s spring 2011 13-city performance tour began in Chilliwack on February 25, and runs through B.C. and Alberta, culminating on April 30 in Kelowna. The presentation includes a wide range of dance that explores the physical relationship of movement to BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011
music and sight to sound, encompassing the “inno-classical” objective of the subscription season. “Traditionally the act of dance creation presupposed the choreographic outcome,” explains David LaHay. “However, more frequently today, ballet is a direct consequence of the interplay between the choreographer and the dancers, with the consequential outcome unknown until the final moment of creation.” The performance features Auguste Bournonville’s The Flower Festival Pas de Deux (1858), which tells the delightful story of young lovers in Genzano, and Dvorak Dances (2006), a simple evocation of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s lovely music. The 2011 spring tour also includes the world premiere of Gioconda Barbuto’s Capture, where the action and reaction of the dancers with each other determined the beginning, middle and end of this intimate exploration of space. And choreographed in 1999, the piece In Stride is the direct result of challenging the classically-trained ballet dancer to throw out all the rules of ballet and explore linear and angular movement that mirrors the hard-driving and pulsating music of Glenn Branca. Ballet Kelowna premiered Simone Orlando’s stage within (2010) last fall and the company is proud to also include it on the spring program. In this ballet, a dancer must face the emotionally shattering reality of the end of a career as she embraces the spotlight and her audience one last time. Capturing the entertainment interest of all members of the family, Ballet Kelowna performs to sold out audiences and enhances the image of ballet, making the art form more inviting, fun and personally meaningful. Proudly “made in Kelowna,” this boutique “inno-classical” professional ballet company is a dedicated community partner committed to inspire, educate and entertain through the energy and artistry of ballet. A Lifetime of Making Music Submitted by Jayne Brooks

Sylvia has been teaching Montessori kindergarten music classes and these youngsters always put a smile on her face.
Sylvia and one of her students Sarah.
Music has always been part of Sylvia Clerke’s life and she is still active in the Kelowna music community. Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Sylvia started piano lessons when she was eight years old. At 13, she began playing the organ at the United Church in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. By age 16, she became church organist and choir director. Sylvia attended the Conservatory of Music in Regina studying piano, voice and pipe organ. She received her AMUS (Associate of Music) for piano in 1963 and her ARCT

(Associate of the Royal Conser vator y) in piano in 1964. While at the Conservatory and for several years after, Sylvia taught piano, sight-reading and ear training
classes for the Conservatory. In 1966, Sylvia and her family moved to Calgary. Sylvia continued with her music, eventually teaching 45 students per week. In 1973, the family moved to Kelowna. Once again, Sylvia started teaching students and for many years taught classical and pop keyboard for Tempo Music. Sylvia has taught individual students and group classes in piano,

and today continues to provide individual piano lessons for students of all ages. Their success in recitals and exams is the great satisfaction of her job, she says. In recent years, Sylvia has been teaching Montessori kindergarten music classes and these youngsters always put a smile on her face. Since coming to Kelowna,Sylvia has continued her work as pianist, organist and choir leader at local United Churches. Currently, she can be found at St.Paul’s United Church where she is the organist and choir director for the Senior Choir, the Men’s Chorus and Gospel Praise. Although it is mainly spiritual music for these choirs, there are also fun-filled evenings of secular music, including songs from Broadway productions and various pop groups. Shortly after moving to Kelowna, Sylvia got involved with the Theatre Kelowna Society. For the last few years she has been active with Theatre Kelowna’s Black Box Theatre fall productions (Pig ‘n’ Whistle, BC Follies,
Dirty Thirties and Fabulous Fifties). As musical director, she enjoys working with both the per formers and musicians. She is a true professional who willingly shares her musical talents with everyone. Sylvia has been involved with the Kelowna International Choir for more than a decade, first as accompanist and currently as musical director. This position has provided opportunities to travel and perform including trips to Europe and Alaska. Sylvia has enjoyed all of these trips and says some of her favourite memories are of performing outdoors in a castle courtyard in Europe and of playing for the group when the seas got rough on the cruise. Sylvia had the thrill of a lifetime in 2007 when she had the opportunity to sing with the Unity Choir from Kelowna and travel to New York City to sing in a concert at Carnegie Hall. She continues to make music and share her talents with those around her. All of us in Kelowna are the beneficiaries of her musical talents.

91-Year-Old Dynamo On the Go Submitted by Scott McKinnon

Today, she still plays the organ for church services at her home, Mountainview Retirement Home, as well as several other group homes.
Irene is always on the go. She’s ready to play the piano or organ at the drop of a hat. She’ll help to organize fundraisers, works occasionally at her daughter’s store, and is always up for a shopping trip, card game, a play or a tour. At 91 years of age, you might wonder where this whirlwind came from. Irene was born on a farm near Govan, Saskatchewan, in

1919. It wasn’t long before she discovered the joy of music. When she was about three years old, her dad bought an old pump organ and Irene quickly learned to play by ear. Her older brother Jim would pump the organ (since she couldn’t reach it) while she picked out melodies. As a teen, she played for the town dances - a sneaky way to get around her strict parents’“no dancing” rule.

Irene left the farm in the midst of WWII and headed to Fort William, Ontario, where she met her husband, a young serviceman named Harold Thornton. The war ended and they headed west, settling in Regina, and then Saskatoon. While raising three daughters, Irene sold Stanley Home Products, but soon became very involved in her husband’s piano and organ store. Irene demonstrated pianos and organs, assisted in sales and a played a major role in advertising and promotion. She taught organ lessons and opened and closed every broadcast day on CFQC-TV with a segment called “Interludes with Irene.” Playing at dozens of annual events, and the local hockey games, she became somewhat of a local celebrity! Once the kids left home, Irene and Harold headed further west, opening a store called “Harmony House” in Burnaby. In 1975, they sold the business and retired to the Shuswap. Well... as retired as was possible for Irene. Travel was on the agenda. The couple visited Europe and explored practically every inch of Canada and the U.S. in their travel van. Eventually they settled on Mesa, Arizona, as a second home for several years before moving to Kelowna. The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary before Harold passed away in 2004. Irene is a very crafty lady (in the nicest sense). There isn’t a hobby she hasn’t tackled, from sewing, crocheting and knitting to oil painting and gardening. She even built a custom dollhouse with working lights! Irene has always been very active in her church. In Saskatoon, she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and director of the youth choir. Today, she still plays the organ for church services at her home, Mountainview Retirement Home, as well as several other group homes. Irene has always been a “bright lights, big city” girl at heart. She loves singing, traveling, jewelry, decorating and has a passion for fashion! Playing music is her first love and can play any song, in any key, from sheet music or by ear. So now you know where this dynamo came from and what she’s been up to. Whatever she does next, we’re pretty sure it will involve a keyboard!

angels among us
Dramatic Volunteerism Submitted by Betty Steg, Head of Volunteers at KCT
Just some of the volunteers of Kelowna Community Theatre.
VOLUNTEERS - we all know them and there are diverse areas in which people can give selflessly of themselves. The volunteers we are paying tribute to today, are those at the Kelowna Community Theatre. This group of people fulfills the true meaning of volunteering: Someone who gives of themselves without any regrets, without condition, but with full devotion. And maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering: doing more than you have to, because you want to, in a cause you consider good. These are definitely the KCT Volunteers. Some of our volunteers have been with us for many years and some are very new to KCT. Many of the seasoned volunteers are willing to undertake any and all duties we ask of them - a wonderful inspiration for the newcomers. No matter where they fall into the spectrum, we know that we could not do without their help. These wonderful volunteers are easy to find at the theatre. They are dressed in black and white and ready to greet you at the door, checking your tickets. Should you venture to the concession and/or bar, they will gladly fill your order. As you make your way toward the auditorium you may find them at the coat check and/or merchandise 40
table (if the need presents itself). When you are ready to enter into the auditorium, the volunteers are at the door to present you with a program (when available) and direct you to your designated seat. During the performance they are seated at the back of the auditorium to ensure the safety of the patrons. At intermission time, they are busy fulfilling the duties of the positions they selected to work that evening. At the end of the show, they will be opening the doors, bidding you a good evening as well as retrieving any items that are accidentally left behind. So, the next time you visit us at KCT, be sure to look for our wonderful volunteers, stop and chat, you will find them very helpful and friendly. And who knows, they may inspire you to join us as a KCT volunteer. In closing I would like to add: There are no people like volunteers, we smile when they are near. And we are here to say, they really save the day and what they do is worth more than their pay. And anyone of them would always come through when there’s a job to do. Please join in thanking them for all they do - they definitely deserve the title of “Angels Among Us.” BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011

Our first grandchild Mia.
I admit it. I have fallen in love, even after promising myself it would never happen again. The object of my affection is our first grandchild, Mia, a doll-size little miracle of a baby girl. Since her arrival, it’s hard to wipe the smile off my face. I finally understand the delight and gushing that I’ve heard from other grandparents - and it’s a remarkable blessing. With a new baby in the picture, it’s amazing how all the early personal experiences of parenthood rise back to the surface. While the new parents are more literate about pregnancy and infant development than Hubby and I were, we’ve done the walk. Now we call it sage advice, as if we have - (drum roll please) - the “wisdom of the ages.” And as we help the new parents adjust to this life-altering phase, we can’t help but reflect on our own trials as we welcomed each of our kids into the family. What is interesting is how the basics still remain the same, despite all the new “essentials” for the baby. Babies need a safe, secure place to sleep. With all due respect to my own parents, I’m certainly not advocating a return to the good ol’ days when a sturdy dresser drawer could double initially for a bassinette. But watching these new parents, I can’t help but feel they’re being pressured into buying the modern designer nursery furniture. My gosh, I wish I could afford 600-thread count linens on my own bed! Do the new mom and dad actually believe that their little angel won’t puke and soil through the expensive stuff? At least they can admire the lovely detailing on the crib headboard in their sleep-deprived haze at 3am, as they’re trying to get the little one back to sleep. Yeah, right. Babies need cuddles and touch. Receiving blankies and BEYOND 50 • SPRING 2011
plush crib throws are lovely, tactile, sentimental objects that will never go out of style. I have found that the process of swaddling the babe is something that comes back to you quickly. Changing diapers is also a no-brainer. You just do it. My daughter and son-in-law seem amazed at how speedily I can clean up the dirty deed, without so much as a grimace. That life skill will come to Mommy and Daddy in time. And they’ll undoubtedly have their own story to tell about their first encounter with head-to-toe diarrhea. Those were good times, weren’t they? Too bad the little bundles grow up so fast. That’s especially true over the first few weeks when our little darling started out life the size of Hubby’s shoes (sorry, dear). Can there be too many photos? Probably not. Can I finally pass along some of the cherished baby toys and trinkets I carefully squirreled away decades earlier? I’ll absolutely try. As a grandparent, you can gush all you want and you can ooze with joy. My journey as Grandma is just beginning and I am so pumped! MARILYN J. BROWN is a regular contributor to Beyond 50 Magazine. We appreciate her fun perspectives and enthusiasm. We love the fact that she shares her talent and wit for all of our readers to enjoy!

Cutest Grandchild Winner! Wow! Who knew there were so many good looking kids in one little town?! You sent us your “cutest grandchild” pictures and they are incredible. As in previous years, I’m remaining nameless to protect my identity as I have been
given the difficult and yet fun task of choosing the winner (and no, my name is not Laurel). So who are my favourites this year? Zachary Blum is certainly the cutest lion I’ve ever seen. Stella has the most beautiful blue eyes and Madison is fabulous with those two little teeth. Scarlette made me laugh immediately, as did Kaiden (great glasses). And I loved Johanna’s look of surprise and Ryder’s laughing smile. But ultimately I have to choose one and the winner is Austin. Congratulations! There were so many entries, we can’t print them all in this issue, so you can check out a few on pages 12, 17, 19-21, 29, 39, 41, 43-46. All the photos can be seen on our website at www.beyond50magazine.com. Thanks for the great photos. We appreciated every one we received. RUNNER UP PHOTO

The Flower Submitted by Jack Richardson
Love is something that is living Like the flower blooming there Receiving sunshine, yet always giving, Sharing it with tender care For love cannot be really seen In a loved one’s eyes: Nothing: where it might have been Or bold as sun in the skies. And love cares not what others say As it blossoms and grows anew: For the very best words you’ll hear today Are always: I Love You. YOUR LOVING DAD
