Looking after your body! Skin Aging How to turn back the clock Skin in older individuals looks and feels different from the skin of younger adults. It has a matte, dull, aged look to it and lacks the elasticity and supple feel of younger skin. The reasons for this are varied but it is mostly due to ultraviolet light damage from years of sun exposure and the intrinsic natural aging process of the skin. The skin as a result loses it's elasticity and becomes thinner over time. By the age of 80, our skin is about 30% of the thickness it was at age 18! Do not despair, there is hope for all of us to reverse or at least slow down the visible aging process our skin will inevitably experience. Listed here are some broad categories for treatments that can take years off our skin and let us age gracefully. INJECTABLES: These products include Botox Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers like Juvederm Injectable Gel. Botox can help erase lines on the skin that are a result of muscle activity, especially in the areas above and around the eyes. Dermal Fillers can help replace lost skin volume in the mid-face region, sculpt a new jawline, hide saggy jowels, enhance lips and reshape the nose just to name a few uses. LASER/LIGHTS: There are plenty of light and laser devices on the market today, each targeting a specific defect in the skin. Lasers can be used for hair removal, sun spot removal, laser tattoo removal, mole removal, wrinkle removal and plenty of other procedures depending on what clinic you visit. This is an exciting time in the field of aesthetic medicine for physicians and patients alike because there are now great options to choose from that are minimally invasive and incur little to no downtime.

As my sons, Devon and Dallas, start looking towards a profession, I have advised them to seek out their passions and do something they can be proud of.
Left to right: Dallas, Devon and Laurel.
If you think back to when you were young, did you end up in the profession you thought you would? Our theme this issue is “seasoned professionals” and we have some extraordinary people for you to meet. Ever wonder why people do what they do? Rhonda is this gorgeous lady who owns the Hair Saloon, and she radiates contentment when it comes to her career choice. She has seen and heard more than most... but her lips are sealed... She is all about integrity and warmth. (page 32) What it would be like to “clown around” all day? Check out PT the clown on page 26 and find out what her day entails. So do you think you have good penmanship and like to volunteer? The Kelowna Calligraphers’ Guild has been around for 21 years, to learn more about what they do and when they meet check out their story on page 24. We hope you enjoy our creative cover this issue. It took three seasoned professionals to make it happen. Two of them are Wayne Duchart, our accomplished photographer and Lori Johnson, who is the finest graphic designer out there. Her natural talent and ability are what make Beyond 50’s unique and creative layout what it is. The third person to lend a hand to create the cover was Burton Hennig. Burton has spent many a day creating caricatures of some of the Okanagan’s most fascinating people. So we asked him to assist us and as you can see we are glad we did. Special thanks to the individuals on the cover who agreed to“pose”and share their professions with us. As Beyond 50 heads into summer and prepares 4
for fall, we are excited. This fall we will be celebrating our fifth anniversary in print. It has been a roller coaster ride for many reasons, both personal and professional. I have never worked so hard and been pulled in so many directions in my life, but I truly believe this is the profession for me. I have been in telecommunications, worked for non profits, banking, consulting and too many other mini-careers to remember. But being a publisher is not just a job. I try to build relationships and support my community in every way I can. I have created jobs, I help my advertisers network their businesses, I provide a forum for everyday local people to share their stories, ambitions and opinions. Most of all,I have connected people with others they may never have met and reconnected some who have lost touch. As my sons, Devon and Dallas, start looking towards a profession, I have advised them to seek out their passions and do something they can be proud of.The world has a lot offer if you work hard and believe in yourself. I am not wealthy financially and each issue is challenging, but when it comes to meeting extraordinary people, I am the wealthiest woman I know. Laurel D’Andrea ABOUT THE COVER: It takes many talented people to create a cover. Special thanks to all who made this one happen: Wayne Duchart for the photography, Burton Hennig who created the caricatures and Lori Johnson my graphic artist who brought the vision to life! Being a seasoned professional implies extensive experience, wealth of accumulated knowledge and skill, all resulting in a high standard of performance. But none of these are required to sign up and have a great time at the upcoming, fifth annual “Linked Together” Women’s Golf Event at Shannon Lake Golf. The “Linked Together” Tournament grew out of a partnership linking Esteem Lingerie and Shannon Lake Golf Course in support of the Kelowna Women’s Shelter. With a strong focus on the fun of the game rather than a high level of expertise, this year’s event scheduled for Thursday, August 11, promises a fun-filled evening guaranteed to warm your heart. The tournament is designed to attract golfers of all skill levels wanting to have a great time on the course, enjoy dinner, prizes and a fabulous silent auction. The publicity this event receives creates a greater awareness of the issue of family violence in our community and the services and programs that the Shelter offers. The truly seasoned professionals, Angela, Florenda and Lil of Esteem Lingerie and John and Glen from Shannon Lake Golf, have put on an amazing, fun golf tournament that over the last four years raised an astounding $22,500 to enhance the Kelowna Women’s Shelter’s services. The money raised has directly helped women and children in our community whose lives have been impacted by family violence or other significant crisis. If you would like to participate in this tournament please contact: Esteem Lingerie at 250-768-0171 or esteem@telus.net.

Becoming a Seasoned Volunteer Submitted by Dawn Wilkinson
To become“seasoned”is to“gain more flavour or zest from the addition of savory ingredients,” according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary. In other words, a a distinctive quality is gained. With this in mind, can you think of a more seasoned volunteer than Beryl Itani? Beryl started volunteering in Kelowna when she was new to the communit y and wanted to meet people. Her parents and grandparents were known to help others. Thus began an old family recipe. Giving back to your community just made sense. “I believe that volunteering is good for your health,” says Beryl.“Your life is more vibrant. You get fewer colds and your mind stays alert.” Beryl is best known for her commitment with Emergency Social Services, especially the evacuations during the 2003 and 2010 fires. She was awarded the Anita Tozer Memorial
Award at the City of Kelowna Civic and Community Awards in April. Many volunteer experiences have added savory ingredients to Beryl’s life. Leadership has become a distinctive quality making her much in demand for committee wor k lik e the International Children’s Games. “I like to work behind the scenes and get things done that make a difference,”she explains. As a longstanding volunteer with Kelowna Community Resources, planning the 2011 Okanagan Volunteer Opportunities Fair is one of Beryl’s current projects. She hopes you’ll visit the Volunteer Fair on Saturday, September 10, at Parkinson Recreation Centre. It will feature 80 displays and will help you find a place to add “seasoning”to your life.

Terry Fox Run: A Little Goes a Long Way Submitted by Lisa Worman
PHOTO • CONTRIBUTED
This year we’d like you to make a difference by coming out to the event. Better yet, how about entering a team...
Thirty years is a long time in today’s fast paced world. For an annual fundraiser to have lasted this long is a minor miracle. Like any relationship though, after 30 years people start to take it for granted. Last May that is exactly where the Kelowna Terry Fox Run found itself; without an organizer and in jeopardy of being cancelled. Fortunately, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped up. This year will be its 31st year. You can really make a difference by participating. One story from last year’s Terry Fox Run involves a friend I’ve known for many years. His mom had been diagnosed with cancer. I asked him out to lunch and when we sat down, he handed me $60 as a donation. I politely declined the offer saying I would rather he donate the money to
himself. Then I asked him to send out an email to his friends and associates asking for their support. He looked at me a bit sideways, but agreed. Come Run day, not only did he and his mom attend the event, but they raised $600 for the Terry Fox Foundation - ten times what he personally would have given. Now that’s a difference! You could see in their eyes a new pride for what they had done for cancer, rather than the darkness it often brings. By simply participating, you can show support for all of those impacted by cancer. It was an honour last year to stand with more than 20 cancer survivors as Terry’s Team Members and to symbolize Terry’s dream of finding a cure. What pride it gave us to stand up to cancer and to have others stand up with us.
So when you think that making a difference requires a grand gesture, rest assured a simple act can have a huge impact. This year we’d like you to make a difference by coming out to the event. Better yet, how about entering a team and grabbing a couple friends to join you? And even better, how about coming out, setting up that team, and sending out e-mails to all your friends to send you a donation? Maybe you, too, can raise 10 times what you could have donated on your own. What a difference that would make! The Terry Fox Foundation supports research for all kinds of cancers. With 87 cents of every dollar donated going directly to cancer research, the TFR has one of the lowest overheads of any charity. This year’s event will take place on September 18 at the Mission Sportsfield with registration at 10am. There are three different walk/run courses available: 1.5km, 5km, or 10km. You can sign up ahead of time at www.terryfox.org or contact Lisa or Shane Worman at lworman@uniser ve.com. LISA AND SHANE WORMAN are both cancer survivors, proud Terry’s Team members, and the Volunteer Coordinators of our local Terry Fox Run. They live in Kelowna with their two boys.

Frank Greene A Volunteer at BC Cancer Agency-Centre - Southern Interior Submitted by Susan Kolebaba Regional Co-ordinator, Volunteer Services
PHOTO • CONTRIBUTED
I have been a volunteer here since 1999. I keep coming back because I gain more than I give.
Frank came to Canada in 1968 and spent his working years as a food research scientist and quality control manager for Sun Rype. He and his wife, Barbara raised their children, golf together and now volunteer at British Columbia Cancer Agency-Centre for the Southern Interior, one of the variety of ways they contribute to their community. Frank is a cancer survivor. We asked this seasoned professional why volunteering at BCCA was the right choice for him. Q. What brought you to BCCA as a volunteer? A. I was enjoying retirement but thought I should be doing more. At that time, cancer had affected my life, as my wife and son were both cancer survivors, also. My wife and I attended an open house at BCCA-CSI and put our names forward as volunteers.I felt I needed to give back because of the wonderful treatment we had received during our various experiences with health care. Q. How long have you been a volunteer at BCCA and what keeps you coming back? A. I have been a volunteer here since 1999. I keep coming back because I gain more than I give. This is a beautiful facility, the staff is up beat, and I feel like I am part of a team. I get to contribute to the care of the patients. Q. You work in the Ambulatory Care Unit. What do you do during your shift? 12
A. I work with the staff and the patients. After the LPN (nurse) lays out the schedule for two to eight doctors, I will greet the patients, weigh the patients, and chart their weight. I show the patient to the examination room, and ensure the right doctor gets the chart. If the patients have a long wait, I may bring them a drink, spend some time with them and generally ensure they are comfortable. After the examination room is empty, I will tidy the room. Q. Have you done other volunteer work for the BCCA? A. Yes, I have done several different things. I have worked with the Wayfinders. The volunteers in this job help patients find their way around the facility, keep the supplies up, and do all of things associated with the coffee cart. I have been on panel at a local conference, worked on the first accreditation committee, and one committee promoting research. I have helped with fund raising by assisting with golf tournaments and donor nights. Q. If a member of the community was looking for a volunteer opportunity what would you tell them about BCCA-CSI. A. The centre is more like a hotel than an institution. It is a nice place to be. There are a variety of jobs you can do.You will feel you are part of a team along with the doctors, pharmacists, clerical staff and nurses. BEYOND 50 • SUMMER 2011

t h e wo r k o f a r t “What Are You Going To Do Now” LINDA KELLY’s labour of love is sculpting in bronze. Bronze collectors throughout North America are familiar with Linda Kelly’s work. Linda produces award winning sculptures depicting the western lifestyle with absolute accuracy. As bronze is a timeless medium that lasts down through generations The Evans Fischer Art Gallery encourages you to consider Linda’s wonderful bronzes for your next important art purchase.
“In The Kootenays” LYNDA GREALISH was raised west of Biggar, Sask. She expressed her great love of the land through her many sketches and drawings during her youth. After moving to the Okanagan in 1991 Lynda was excited to roam the wilderness, often by train while sketching and taking photos. The Evans Fischer Art Gallery is happy to represent the dramatic and dynamic works of Lynda Grealish.
“I Am Voice Of Raven” Stop in at the Evans Fischer Art Gallery and see the creations of artistic perfectionist JUDI WILD. She is a lover of nature and has a deep respect for the earth and its spiritual creatures. Judi spends hours with each painting and through her dry brush watercolour technique she produces unique images we can all relate to. “Midsummer Dream” TERRY ISAAC is an internationally known artist who now resides in the Okanagan. His work has been featured in many bird, wildlife and painting technique books. Terry’s subject matter covers the delicate to the majestic. His photorealistic wildlife paintings are definitely a sight to be seen. The Evans Fischer Art Gallery appreciates his fantastic attention to detail and is proud to display his work.
“Blossom Time” LUCY COLLINGS is an extremely accomplished impressionist artist as well as a hiker and backpacker. She can often be seen at the side of a gravel road setting up her easel. Lucy likes to create while immersed in natural light which allows her to capture moments in time that are both representational and mystical. The Evans Fischer Art Gallery is very proud to represent this accomplished artist. “Dancing Lights” NATHALIE PARENTEAU is a resident of Whitehorse. She uniquely portrays the northern landscape and its inhabitants, showing the softer side of life in an otherwise harsh environment. Her work displays a Haida and Dene influence sometimes humorous, sometimes serious. Visitors to the north will be very familiar with Nathalie. The Evans Fischer Art Gallery offers a variety of her limited edition paper and canvas Giclees. “Friends” Many Western Canadian art collectors are now familiar with the colourful wine villages of ANITA SKINNER. Her works of brilliant happy images and colors graced the cover of the 2009 Fall Wine Festival Guide. Anita’s paintings never fail to draw attention and have brought many a curious collector into the Gallery. The Evans Fischer Art Gallery is enthusiastic about representing her vibrant work.

Art is a Treasure Submitted by Donna Munro
I recently moved to Kelowna and was appointed manager of the Evans Fischer Art Gallery and Framing. My thanks goes out to those seasoned professionals who have helped me make the connections needed to assure the ongoing success of this award-winning gallery, now in its 25th year. I anticipate developing more fulfilling relationships. Networking makes for a strong, committed and progressive community. The joint involvement of the area’s galleries in special events and in supporting local causes makes us all richer and I am proud to be part of it. I am grateful for the local clientele and tourist buyers who support the wonder ful family of ar tists we represent, but I also welcome all the casual browsers who just stop by to say hello, appreciate the art and enjoy our relaxing ambience. Our mission is to provide the best service possible, including leads, referrals and directions if we are unable to meet your specific desires or needs.
I wish to thank particularly my favourite seasoned professionals, Wayne and Julie Evans; without whom my integration into this iconic gallery would have been overwhelming. It is a pleasure to be associated with people of such integrity and a business built on principles. Whether it be for home or office, for self or for a gift, a new piece of art is a treasure when it comes to framing. Presentation is everything and the “appropriate approach” is our trademark. Stop by for a visit, I would so like to meet you. EVANS GALLERY is located on 571 Lawrence Avenue in downtown Kelowna. Joys of Walking Written by Win Langham
Walking is really good for you, So the experts say, But jogging seems to be the thing, That people do today. I find walking is so pleasant, If you take it nice and brisk, Square your shoulders, swing your arms, With your heart there’ll be no risk. Keep a constant steady motion, It helps every working part, It improves the circulation, It’s not too late to start. Comfortable shoes are very important, And clothing appropriate to the season, Walk in any kind of weather, When it’s warm or when it’s freezin’. Walking can be an adventure, Crunching through leaves or snow, And such stories you could tell, If you plan different ways to go. So if you jog go right ahead, I’ll take walking any day. Not only for the pleasure, But healthy I will stay. FEBRUARY 1998

What do you say to a Bearded Lady? Submitted by Tammy Lomin
While waiting in line at my local deli, I noticed one of the ladies working behind the counter had a face full of long white whiskers. Not one or two stray hairs, but an actual beard-like, face full of whiskers. It was hard not to stare. She was the second woman I’d seen that day with facial hair. Having entered into the hot flash stage of my life I couldn’t help but wonder if this was my future. It’s like when I was pregnant - it seemed like every second woman I passed was also pregnant. Or maybe it’s just that I notice it more at this stage of my life. Either way it is rather alarming. I cannot imagine a point in my life that I would allow my beard to grow wild. I may have become a little crabby and impatient with everyone around me. And perhaps I don’t care if my mood doesn’t suit those same people. To hell with them all, I often think to myself. I don’t owe them a damn thing. But letting my facial hair grow out, that is another matter. When it was my turn at the deli counter, the bearded lady suddenly asked if I was okay. She obviously noticed that my face was beet red and I was sweating profusely. I told her I was having a hot flash and she laughed.“Oh, don’t let anyone tell you they will be over in a few years, I am still having them and I am in my 70s.”The other ladies behind the counter laughed along with her.“Oh, and don’t take the hormones,” she said.“You will be on them the rest of your life.” All I could think was that I was listening to advice from a lady with a beard. Everyone else in the lineup was shifting

and mumbling impatiently, no doubt some were thinking the same thing as I.“Oh my god, if I had a beard like that I would take the hormones and lots of them.” The fact is, over the years, I have noticed the odd hair on my neck or chin. They seem to grow about two inches long overnight. I can’t believe I didn’t notice them before I left home. I can only hope no one else saw them while I worked all day with the public. I would be mortified. But I will never take hormones. I’ve read enough to decide that they are not fore me.I am 51 and going through menopause is a natural part of aging. I am a mother and

grandmother and I am not vain enough to spend the money just to look younger. I don’t buy into expensive creams or Botox injections. Hell, I don’t even dye my hair. I have earned my gray and wrinkles and I would not go back and change a thing. If facial hairs start to appear on a more frequent basis, I will deal with them however I have to, whether that means shaving, plucking or waxing. I have to admit that part of me envies these ladies who don’t seem to care what anybody thinks.I am sure they have noticed small kids pointing or teenagers snickering. I imagine these women have been through some of the same life-changing events that I have and a few whiskers just aren’t the worse thing to happen.

Three years ago, I was invited to join a local book club in Kelowna. I met a wonderful person on a flight from Vancouver and then provided her with a ride home. A few weeks later she called to invite me to join her book club. Since then, our club has had many special gatherings and discussions. We would like to share with you how a book club can enrich your life. Friendship - “This has been an amazing opportunity to meet nine women and nurture friendships through the common interest of reading books. I’ve read books I normally would not have read.”- JAMIE Support and Love - “When I was diagnosed with cancer
and could not ski anymore, my ski buddies decided we should create a book club. The original book club members have stuck together and provided much laughter and camaraderie in challenging times.”- DEBBIE Non-judgmental Atmosphere - “We are able to discuss our views in a non-judgmental atmosphere and still remain friends no matter the outcome while learning something new about our friends. We also like to eat delicious food. Yum.” - NANCY Variety of books to read - “I’ve been introduced to amazing books I would not have picked up on my own. I’ve learned a lot about history and geography.” - COLLEEN Spirit of Camaraderie - “We’ve met every six weeks over the years, and have formed bonds by experiencing each other’s joys or sorrows. From one story, everyone will have her own response to the same stimulus.Knowing that we all read selectively, there will be new outlooks to ponder, more layers to unearth, and thus more bang from the book.” CLAUDIA

Selection of Books - “We choose subjects we want to explore for ourselves and with the group. In the process we compare our own life experiences to the book/subject in question.” - WENDY Reading Experience - “I’ve always been a reader. I’m encouraged to think more deeply about the books I am reading. I ask myself: Why do I like or dislike them? What style of writing appeals to me? What are other’s reactions? BEYOND 50 • SUMMER 2011
This has really enhanced my reading experience. I also simply enjoy spending the evening with such a diverse, caring and fun group of women!”- ALICE Social Forum - “We laugh, share and reconnect when we get together. We do focus on the book, but it’s more about sharing our lives and spending time together. It provides an enjoyable and meaningful addition to our social calendar.”KAROL
The book club has compelled me to make a commitment to reading. Through the books, I can travel in my mind and appreciate other cultures and diversity. I have learned to listen to different viewpoints which increase my knowledge and appreciation of the book club members & the world around me. If you want to join a book club, you can contact your local library, ask your friends if you can join their book club or better yet start your own book club.

A New Perspective on Drawing Submitted by Marnie Martin
Burton Hennig has been an artist and resident of the Okanagan for almost four decades and his artwork has permeated the Valley’s artistic landscape.Whether it has been his unique style of window advertising, with bold black lines, fluorescent colours and simple graphics, the full-size murals he has painted in night clubs, restaurants and on pub walls, or his most recent endeavor of drawing caricatures, it is certain that Burton has a flavour all his own.“ A passion for drawing and a genuine love for people prompted me to pursue the art of caricature, which I soon discovered is about seeing, observing, interacting and listening as well as drawing,” says Burton. “It has been an incredible adventure in the study of people.” Burton has spent the last several years mainly drawing caricatures for local festivals and charities. Among these are the Kelowna Life and Arts Festival, Armstrong Fair, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, Sunrise Rotary Charity Auction, The Children’s Miracle Network, and Ronald McDonald House, to name a few.
22
At 72 and still drawing, Burton has developed personally and is launching a new concept he calls “Speedrawing.” “When you change what you think about drawing, you’ll discover not only that you can draw, but that you always could. Using techniques very similar to speed learning or speed reading, speed drawing is a way of training your mind to see drawing in a whole new way.” His website www.SPEEDRAW .com will offer a series of weekly online video tutorials, ebooks, and demonstrations that will enlighten and inspire and get you excited about drawing.Whether you want to draw for fun or for profit, www.SPEEDRAW.com just may be the answer you have been looking for! KELOWNA CALLIGRAPHERS’ GUILD:

Bill Litwin is a member of KCG.
Calligraphers have been gathering in Kelowna since January 1988, and two years later, the group was formally incor porated as the Kelowna
Calligraphers’ Guild (KCG). Three of the original founding members still actively participate in the group today. Over the years, more than 250 individuals, ranging in all skill levels have taken time to sojourn with us. All of them have a love of lettering and often shared with us their varied talents in calligraphy and related arts. KCG was formed to facilitate the exchange of information between calligraphers and to promote interest in and appreciation of calligraphy as an art within the community. Our membership is open to calligraphers of all levels of expertise as well as those with a love of beautiful writing. With this in mind, each monthly meeting focuses around a specific related skill or art form in what we call a “Handson”Program. In addition,at alternating meetings, we have a themed Galleria, where members are encouraged to utilize their calligraphy in combination with other artistic skills to present the theme in a way meaningful to them. Topics have varied greatly over the years,
but recently have included Tongue Twisters, Haiku and the colour“red.” One and two-day workshops are an integral part of our guild with three or four scheduled each year. This is a great opportunity for members to learn a new script or other related arts techniques, including watercolour treatments/embellishments, bookbinding, and papermaking. Regardless of your experience, you are guaranteed to learn something new at any of our workshops. Many of our workshops are taught by skilled local members, who represent decades of

PT’s Calling is to Clown Around
PHOTO • SHANNON HOLAND
Submitted by Marilyn Christensen AKA PT the Clown
“What size are your shoes PT? A hundred?” When one little boy asked me that question, I laughed and said, “I suppose from your perspective that is exactly what size they would be.” You know when I began clowning, I never thought it would be so rewarding, fulfilling and wonderful. To be able to bring love, laughter and happiness to the lives of others is such a beautiful gift. I am truly blessed and will continue my passion throughout my life. It all began with a river walk and the inspiration to write two children’s books. One of the books I wrote was called, “PT the Clown’s Search for Happy.” My publisher suggested I clown at a trade show. “You are kind of a character anyway.” So,I went home, sewed up a clown costume and called someone I know called Puff the Clown for help with my clown makeup. Off I went to learn how to put the grease paint on my face. It is quite drawn out process and the final step requires you to splash your face with cold water to set the makeup. Afterwards, I looked in the mirror 26
and tears started streaming down my face. I knew it right then it was my calling in life! That summer I went to Priscilla Mooseburger’s clown school in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and trained with the Barnum and Bailey clowns. That was seven years ago, and I haven’t stopped clowning since. There are three types of clowns, the Tramp clown (Red Skelton), the white-faced clown (Ronald McDonald) and the Auguste Clown (partial-painted face clowns). I am the Auguste clown, who is a whimsical, happy-go-lucky type of clown. I clown at birthday parties, events, festivals, picnics, weddings and grand openings, and sometimes I even put my costume and big red nose on. My clown skills include comedy magic shows, professional face painting, balloon animal art, educational school shows, singing, playing guitar and puppetry. I also love to share my stories through motivational laughter speaking engagements. My clown profession has taken me on clown cruises, clown conferences and family entertainment workshops throughout the world. Most people laugh when they hear me talk about my life,as it is a bit out of the norm. You think? What is your passion? What consumes your time without you even knowing it? What gifts have you been given? What are you destined to share with others freely and with abandonment? We have all been given gifts and it is your responsibility to figure out what your gift is and to give back to others who do not have it.Are you sharing your gifts on a daily basis? If not, why not? There are so many treasures within us. Find your gold today! The best is yet to come! www.pttheclown.com “PT the Clown” has come to Kelowna. MARILYN CHRISTENSEN is full of enthusiasm, energy, laughter and excitement; an entertainer who loves to blend her creative and artistic sides. As a former RCMP Officer, she has been able to include safety and school programs to her different acts and her children’s books as PT the Clown began her journey to becoming a professional clown. Marilyn has studied and trained with the Barnum & Bailey Clowns in the US and developed many skills and talents such as face painting, balloon animals, comedy magic, puppetry, storytelling and stage performing for schools, birthday parties, festivals, events, and Christmas parties. Doing What I Love Submitted by Dr. Robert Wageman
PHOTO • WAYNE DUCHART
My first dental visit was in 1958 to Dr. Butler’s upstairs Bernard Avenue office. My vivid memories are of a needle that hurt like the dickens, ...
They say, “Time flies when you are having fun!” So I must be having one heck of a time! Somehow, I’ve become one of the “senior” members of the Kelowna and District Dental Society. The last thing I remember was being introduced as the new boy in town by Dr. Ron Neufeld in 1978. Where does time go? Kelowna and dentistry were a lot different then. I was actually born in Kelowna General Hospital in 1952, in what is now the oldest section of the complex. Kelowna’s population was about 12,000 then - 12,001 if you counted me, Parkinson Recreation Centre was a pig farm, and you could take a ferry across the lake for a dime. My first dental visit was in 1958 to Dr. Butler’s upstairs Bernard Avenue office. My vivid memories are of a needle that hurt like the dickens, a cable driven drill that shook my head and trying to spit in a little twirling toilet bowl. Thankfully those days are gone! In fact, so much has changed in the profession that children now even enjoy coming to the dentist! Even in the 33 years I’ve been doing dentistry, the improvements in techniques, materials, and equipment are absolutely amazing. For instance, with oral sedation techniques, we can safely fill all your cavities, fix all your toothaches or crown all your teeth, in one or two long appointments, all while you 28
dose. Most of the appointment you won’t even remember. This is the way to go for you dental cowards or for any one needing major dental work. The advances in equipment are also phenomenal. With computer technology invading every profession, dentistry is now able to provide you with high-quality, all-porcelain fillings and crowns in just one appointment. Another very practical advancement in the computer world is digital x-rays. The old x-rays required a lot more radiation, and were not as accurate. To help you see your teeth better, we have video cameras the size of a ballpoint pen. When you understand and clearly see your tooth problem, you can more easily choose what to do to fix it. Computers have spawned a whole new area of dentistry called Neuro-Muscular dentistry. Headaches, jaw pain, back pain and other problems can often be greatly helped. One last area of dentistry that I want to touch on is dental implants. We can now put solid, non-removable teeth where you have none! I know, for I have one in my own mouth. For those of you who suffer with loose dentures, implants may just be your answer. As you probably can tell, I love my profession and am excited to be learning as it evolves. In fact, I’m having so much fun giving people beautiful smiles that retirement isn’t even an option. As long as Costco has a good supply of reading glasses you’ll see me doing what I love. Cheers and Keep Smiling, ‘Dr. Bob’ DR. ROBERT WAGEMAN was raised in Winfield B.C., where he graduated from George Elliot Secondary School in 1970. He moved to Kelowna in 1978 with his new bride, Nancy where they raised their two children who are now married. Ziprick Road is named after his great-grandfather, Reiswig Park is named after his great uncle and Wageman Road in Winfield is named after his Dad. BEYOND 50 • SUMMER 2011

Endless Days of Leisure Not For This Couple Submitted by Craig Garries

“ . . .we like to be busy and, once the renovations were done and golf season ended, we found the days to be very long.”
Diane and Craig Garries - retirement? Maybe later...
When Craig and Dianne’s friends and family heard they were going to, in their late fifties, open a print and business store, they thought they were crazy. After all, Craig had received a retirement package from a national industrial distributor and Dianne had left her job with a printing company to retire with him in Kelowna - a plan they had long dreamed of. Why would they now be planning to leave retirement to go back to the daily grind of work? “There is no real mystery here. We did, in fact, retire for
over a year and we filled that time with golf, renovating our condo, which we did ourselves by the way, and my volunteer work as a Rotarian,” says Craig. “However, we like to be busy and, once the renovations were done and golf season ended, we found the days to be very long.” “We aren’t snowbirds or skiers so during the winter we were challenged to keep from getting on one another’s nerves,” Dianne adds. So they looked at going back into the workforce. But with the recession, employment utilizing their skill sets was hard to come by. Dianne has an in-depth knowledge of the print business and Craig has over 30 years experience in sales, marketing and operations. Starting their own business

seemed the best option. “We looked around for a business to buy and ran across the PostNet franchise.” Craig says. The PostNet business model of supplying print and related business services to the community fit them to a tee and they approached the franchisor for an available territory. The problem was that PostNet already had a significant presence in Kelowna with two successful stores so another was out of the question. But the West Kelowna market was underserved and was a prime target for a store. So in late 2010, bought the franchise rights to West Kelowna and opened their store in February 2011. After a few months, the couple has no regrets. “I love interacting with the people who come into the store and delivering what I believe is the best in customer service,” says Dianne. Their sales are building as more people and businesses discover and utilize the services. Craig notes that the days are just as long as they were before, but they’re full and fulfilling. The only drawback is having to cut back on golf a little. But they still get out for league play and weekend games together. “I am looking forward to the day I feel the need for a vacation,” jokes Craig. “And at this rate it’s not far off. Right now though, there isn’t a day that I don’t wake up and look forward to work.”

Following Passion Gives Satisfaction Submitted by Diane Hebert

I lost both my parents to cancer ten years apart... These life events fuelled my desire to educate people about being more proactive with their health...
Have you ever woken up one morning and wondered why you are doing what you are doing? I was coming up to my 40th birthday and I felt overworked, stressed out and had very little quality time to enjoy life. I wanted to make a difference for people and didn’t feel like I was achieving that in my corporate career. It was then that I decided to make a career move toward my passion - helping people with their health and fitness. I left the corporate world and headed to Maui to obtain my Personal Trainer Certification. That decision really changed the direction of my life and while it felt risky at the time, I have never regretted the journey. I lost both my parents to cancer ten years apart. They were young at only 56 and 61 years of age. These life events fuelled my desire to educate people about being more proactive with their health and to finding natural solutions to reduce and reverse the symptoms of degenerative disease. Today, I enjoy the satisfaction of self employment in the health and wellness industry. While I no longer actively work as a personal trainer, my education has been invaluable in complementing both my representation of the leading manufacturer of nutritional products, USANA Health Sciences Inc., and the newest health wave - Whole Body 34
Vibration through T-Zone Health Inc. I was introduced to USANA Health Sciences and their products 13 years ago and have both felt and experienced the difference that quality nutritional products make for the people who choose to be proactive with their health. I am proud to offer pharmaceutical grade products from a company that guarantees both purity and potency of their products. Three years ago, I was introduced to Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and became fascinated with the health claims that I was hearing. I became a dealer for T-Zone Health Inc. after researching the health benefits of WBV. Health Canada now officially recognizes the many benefits of WBV that I have seen with our many customers and has licensed T-Zone vibration machines as medical devices. It is very satisfying to hear and see the great results my customers achieve through WBV. I chose to run both businesses from home to take advantage of tax breaks I already enjoyed with working USANA. With my background in finance and accounting, I knew it was a smarter way to do business and develop an income in today’s economy. As I head towards my 50th birthday, I am now becoming more passionate about educating baby boomers on the importance of financial health as well as physical health, and to assist them in becoming recession proof into their retirement years, while keeping their bodies healthy and fit enough to enjoy those years. To contact DIANE HEBERT about a complimentary in home trial of Whole Body Vibration or to know more about the USANA product lines and opportunity please call her directly at 250-7178361 or 1-888-878-2461.

Turning stock market gains into community investment GIFT OF APPRECIATED STOCK
Ev ery bo dy wins when y ou make a gift o f apprec iated sto ck to your community foundation, the Central Okanagan Foundation. Your gains are put to good use. Your gift of stock is reinvested in your community, and qualifies for immediate tax credit. HOW IT WORKS
• You make a gift of eligible securities directly to your community foundation. • Your gift is placed into any of our charitable funds in your name, business name, or in honour of any person or organization you choose. Or you can establish an Unrestricted Fund so your gift can respond to the most pressing community needs. • Your gift qualifies for a tax credit and you avoid the capital gains tax that would otherwise arise from the sale of this stock. • Your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your fund are used to make grants addressing community needs. Your gift - and all future earnings from your gift - is a permanent source of community capital, helping to do good work forever.
Generat ing a return for your community Our stock returns provided the means for giving to our community,” say Susan and Jim Wilson*. That’s why they chose to contribute appreciated stock directly to their local community foundation. Last year, The Wilsons supported the CNIB, United Way, UBC Okanagan, Okanagan College, Chamber Music Kelowna, Inn from the Cold, and many other local charities. “Some of our charities are too small to accept direct stock gifts,” says Susan. “Giving through the community foundation eliminates that barrier.” The Wilsons received a tax credit based on the fair market value of their stock, while avoiding the capital gains tax that would otherwise arise from its sale. *Names changed to protect the privacy of our donors.

A Writing Village Submitted by Marilyn J. Brown
Talking myself into the commitment of an intense fourday writers’ conference, my best writing buddy and I checked into the hotel and picked up our course packages.
It’s been said that everyone has a novel inside them waiting to be put to paper.Even if that statement is updated to reflect the e-world we live in, I never comprehended why so many individuals believe their story is the next bestseller. I didn’t appreciate this conviction until I attended my first international writers’ conference. Talking myself into the commitment of an intense fourday writers’conference,my best writing buddy and I checked into the hotel and picked up our course packages. I knew right away that things were going to be interesting when we spotted one of the speakers wearing a mini-skirt, rainbowstriped leggings, platform stilettos and ribboned pig-tails in her hair.( I know it was near Halloween, but really?) She was accompanied by another author wearing an artsy long, embroidered cape, and a cluster of feathers clipped into her flowing grey locks. I felt suddenly “under-dressed” in my jeans, sweater and clogs. It was going to be just as much a study in people, as it was in writing, and it was going to be 36
hard not to be distracted. The event was a smorgasbord of classes and workshops, directed by noted authors and teachers, each sharing their talents, perspectives and successes. The sessions seemed to fly by,with participants scribbling on notepads or tapping on laptops, trying to harvest each kernel of inspiration. After a full day of instruction, our were minds oozing with ideas, yet there were more keynote speeches in the evening. By bedtime - always late - I felt as mentally exhausted as a student cramming for final exams - but without the caffeine overload. There were hundreds of aspiring writers, working in a myriad of genres, from all parts of the globe, all trying to improve on their craft. Some were pitching their pieces to an agent, while others were having some of their work critiqued for the first time. It was an amazing and humbling experience! Only another writer fully understands the vulnerable feeling when you put your words out there for others to evaluate. (Maybe I should forego the moisturizer and opt for a tough lizard skin.) There were many tidbits of knowledge to absorb within a condensed time frame, yet it was worthwhile interacting with others sharing the same passion. Being timid in that arena is definitely not a good trait. Having said that, flamboyancy and flashy clothes do not a writer make.Look at J.K. Rowling, and she’s how rich these days?! With the stimulating writers’ conference under my belt, I’m now discovering more and more community-based writing events in what is a true writer’s village.I enjoy sharing bits of myself through my writing - without having to sport platform heels or a showy cape. Choosing a Seasoned Healthcare Professional Submitted by Dr. Wayne M. Terai
Like choosing a lawyer, and accountant or a mechanic, choosing a healthcare professional can be a daunting task. I have seen the effects of this over my 16 years in practice. Numerous patients tell me on their first visit,“I know I should have dealt with this sooner, but I just moved to Kelowna. I loved seeing my chiropractor back in Whoville, but here, I didn’t know who to go to.” There are two lessons here: First, please don’t wait to get help. I know, I know, the optimist in us is convinced the pain will go away on its own eventually. But,more often than not, it doesn’t. In fact, delaying treatment will often make the problem take that much longer to fix. My mentor used to say in his thick Texan accent: “When you throw water on brown grass, it ain’t going to green up right away.” Second, choose your healthcare professional based on a couple basic questions to see if he or she will provide you with the type of care you want and need. If he or she is not willing to answer these questions up front, ask yourself if this is the type of care provider you want to work with? What type of training and qualifications do you have? Doctors of Chiropractic have very similar training to medical doctors. In fact, at my alma mater, CMCC, many of our teachers also taught at the University of Toronto’s CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

The majority of my post-graduate studies and certifications have been in the Activator technique (www.activator.com) and low-intensity laser therapy (www.medi tech-bioflex.com). Do you specialize in my XYZ-type of problem? Each healthcare professional has his/her own area of interest, which can include pediatrics, sports injuries, and geriatrics. Within those areas of interest, you may want to ask about methods of treatment. Some practitioners focus on exercise, some focus on biomechanics and some focus on nutrition. In Chiropractic, there are more than 100 different types of techniques or styles of treatment. The important things to think about here is: does the style of treatment suit your needs? Are you comfortable with the style of treatment? Is the healthcare professional seasoned or experienced enough to deal with your XYZ-type of problem? In my experience, the patients who get the best results from their care are the ones who ask the best questions. Keep the above questions in mind the next time you are looking for a healthcare professional. It will be well worth your effort. DR. WAYNE TERAI has been helping Okanagan families restore their health for over 15 years. Varicose Veins: More than Just an Ugly Truth
PHOTO • CONTRIBUTED
Submitted by Dr. Craig Crippen, Kelowna Vein Clinic
Before.
After.
If you are over the age of 40, you have probably seen at least a few of them on your legs - those tiny red or purple looking veins that multiply with age. You may have also seen larger versions of these veins bulging out the skin. They are visually unattractive, but also develop issues such as swelling, aching, or cramping. Here are some common facts about varicose veins as well as some of the myths that surround the condition to help you understand the condition a little better.
Q: How common is it for someone to have varicose veins? A: A large American study found that more than a quarter of the population has some form of venous disease in their legs.
Q: What are the most common symptoms one can have with varicose veins?
Before.
After.
MYTH : Varicose veins are only a cosmetic problem and only concerning for “vain” people. FACT : Long-term complications of untreated venous disease can be leg ulcers, infection and blood clots. Having surface leg veins is a sign that there are deeper problems at work which need to be addressed. MYTH : I should wait until I have had all my children before getting my veins fixed. FACT : It’s easier to treat the veins when they are early on in the disease process. Treating your veins sooner will result in the following improvements: Less damage to the skin from diseased veins; Quicker recovery time after treatment because the veins are not as inflamed; You will have less leg aching and heaviness during your pregnancy.
A: Most often, patients describe aching or tiredness of the legs, however swelling of the lower leg is most diagnostic for the condition. MYTH: Does being overweight make my varicose veins worse? FACT: Additional body weight does not cause varicose veins
on its own, rather a lifestyle of inactivity and poor muscle tone in the lower legs can contribute to worsening of the condition. Having varicose veins is usually a genetic problem, meaning you have most likely inherited this condition from other family members. BEYOND 50 • SUMMER 2011

What’s Changed in Funeral Service? What Hasn’t? Submitted by Jason Everden
Over the last 15 years, although most may not know it, funeral service in our region has changed probably more than any other industry. One writer calls it:“Climate change for Funeral Service.” Let me explain. Let’s go back to year 1994. I had just started assisting my dad at our new family funeral service. Provincially, the cremation rate was approximately 69 per cent. When someone died, having a funeral and possibly a viewing was done more often than not. Most who chose cremation would purchase an urn for placement in the family cemetery plot. About 70 per cent of all families had a service that involved clergy, with an organist or a funeral director playing music on cue off a cassette or CD. Progressive funeral homes bought computers and colour copiers to replace their aging typewriters and began printing their own memorial stationary. By 1999, websites were started by about half of the

providers across the country. With these came internet access and email at the funeral home. British Columbia’s Vital Statistics Agency came out with a death registration program so that funeral directors could register deaths “inhouse.” Around the same time came mini urns, urn jewellery and the invention of the “Rental Casket.” A little later, inhouse production of DVD tributes and websites honouring the dearly departed became available. Let’s flash forward to today… The current cremation rate provincially is hovering at approximately 85 per cent but most providers I know say it’s closer to 90 per cent. Keepsake urns, necklace urns, fingerprint jewellery or DVD tributes are purchased by half of the families arranging a cremation. Families wanting burial (in our region) are almost non-existent and deaths are registered via the internet. Today’s families prefer our contemporary celebration room (chapel) or our informal reception area equipped with a video camera, a Plasma television and an HD projector to broadcast the DVD tribute during the “celebration of life” or “memorial tea.” Oh, and the music we play at services is

generated via wireless internet. Our décor is now more like a modern hotel than a funeral home. In place of the old casket selection room that once held up to 20 caskets, sits an on-site crematorium that is rarely not in use. Today, one would be hard pressed to find a funeral home without a website, and now you can sign a virtual guestbook, read obituaries, make a donation and send flowers all from the site. Just last year Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium became the first funeral provider in our region, and possibly in Western Canada, to add live “Funeral Webcasting” to the list of services offered. Yes, that means Uncle Wilhelm in Frankfurt can now watch his sister Helga’s funeral in Kelowna live from the comfort of his nursing home. I wonder what a traditional “funeral director” from 1994 would have said had I gone back in time and told him about the future. Wait, I know...“You’re nuts, kid!”

Diatomaceous Earth is a non-toxic pesticide made from fossilized crustaceans and skeletons in a dust form and has the effect of tiny shards of glass penetrating the waxy shell of insects.
There are many great reasons to go green and never has there been a more advantageous time to do so! Many bylaws restricting the use of toxic synthetic chemicals in over 35 municipalities in British Columbia have prompted a surge of new biological and organic products. Balancing the holistic development and relationship of soil, plants and wildlife by strictly avoiding cosmetic fertilizers and pesticides are realities we are tackling with great gusto. Biological controls and organic natural products that include old standbys, such as soaps, dormant oils, sticky traps and plant oils, remain on the market for their reliability. With the introduction in the last five years of amazing new products that rival even the strongest synthetic chemical, how can home owners not go green? With so many environmental issues facing our society, companies are prompted to achieve better, faster more economical ways of organically controlling pests. Biological pest control is a natural method of taking on insects, mites, weeds, and plant diseases and is an important compliment to the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) industry. Examples of old and new biological controls are BTK (Bacillus Thuringiensis Kurstaki) liquid that targets specific insects; Bacillus Subtilis (Serenade) a ready-to-use liquid fungicide for vegetable and flowering plants; Mosquito dunks BTI (Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis) for mosquito larvae. BT liquids and dunks are produced from soil bacteria that have no harmful effects to people, pets, wildlife or fish. Other biological controls are pheromone traps, beneficial nematodes (microscopic worms) that destroy larvae and grub in the soil, and predator insects, such as ladybugs, lacewings, and praying mantis which destroy aphids, mites and other destructive insects. Other organic natural products new on market include Corn Gluten Meal, a natural fertilizer made from corn in 44
pellet or liquid form that interferes with the germination of weed seeds. Diatomaceous Earth is a nontoxic pesticide made from fossilized crustaceans and skeletons in a dust form and has the effect of tiny shards of glass penetrating the waxy shell of insects. The removal of the insects’ waxy body-coating leaves the pest vulnerable to a drying decay. Acetic acid, a nonselective organic herbicide has come a long way from the five per cent food-grade vinegar strength. New percentages of acetic acid range from six to 10 per cent, strong enough to destroy common lawn weeds and turf grasses. Compost teas are excellent ways to boost soil immunity naturally - discouraging insect and disease problems; stimulating the production of beneficial microbes, good bacteria, good fungi; encouraging less thatch problems, all while increasing root and plant vitality. Compost and compost blends add necessary nutrients to soil, improve water retention, reduce soil compaction, and suppress weeds, while creating a healthier ecosystem. Biological organic natural resources come from plants, soil and animals. Caring for our environment is like caring for ourselves - a loving collective network. Our future depends on how much we love our planet. Choosing to go organic is not only right, but the only way to go - bioorganically speaking! Prepare for Tomorrow: Protecting Yourself Financially in Event of Injury or Illness Submitted by George Baut
Nobody wants to think about the possibility of becoming disabled as a result of an accident or ser iously illness.
One of the most crucial parts of my job - the one that gives me the most fulfillment is helping my clients negotiate their disability claim. Receiving the claim cheques when money is so critically needed gives my clients and their loved ones peace of mind. My first disability claim happened very early on in my career. Steve, a long haul trucker, had broken his leg playing hockey. He was unable to perform one of the important duties of his occupation and was disabled in accordance with the terms of his Personal Accident policy. Within two weeks after breaking his leg, Steve received his first $2,500 tax-free claim payment and the cheques continued until he recovered and went back to work. While he was on claim Steve’s monthly payment for his policy was waived by the company. That was more than 17 years ago, he still has the policy and has added several other coverages to his portfolio. Steve is looking forward to year 20 of his personal accident policy. His Return of Premium Option will kick in and the company will refund him a tax-free lump sum cheque equal to 100 per cent of the premiums he has paid for eligible coverages, less any claim payments he received. He plans on taking his wife on the cruise of her dreams. Nobody wants to think about the possibility of becoming disabled as a result of an accident or seriously illness. Innovative Insurance Agencies offers an affordable Personal Accident and Sickness Compensation plan that can help protect you and your family by providing a monthly tax-free benefit if injury or sickness prevents you from performing your day-to-day activities. No proof of income is required for benefits up to $2,000 BEYOND 50 • SUMMER 2011

“Cinderella” has, by analogy, come to mean “one whose attributes are unrecognized,” or “one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect.” Kathy Wiebe, owner of Rosebud’s Designer Consignment Boutique, had that in mind when she created the Cinderella Fund. Women of all ages can apply for help for continued education from the Cinderella Fund. The applicants go thru a screening and interview process, then someone deserving is selected to receive funds to help achieve her goal. How the funds are created is simple. What are the benefits of Cancer Protection insurance? • Pays a lump-sum benefit for covered cancers • No medical required at the time of application • Available from ages 5 to 80 • Guaranteed renewable to age 90
