Datinginthe MiddleAges -Part 3

So far, we’ve covered how to meet people in public places and in groups, and the difference between using an agency like Magnetix, as opposed to online dating sites. There are days I wish this task was easier. Whatever happened to good oldfashioned bumping into someone? In our fast-paced world, it’s hard to get to know your neighbour, let alone find a single one. The boy/girl next door

stories we’ve all heard about are now relegated to a bygone era. It’s rare these days to meet a couple who met while living in the same neighbourhood. Not long ago, I did meet a single man, around my age, in my neighbourhood. He was from the prairies, as am I, so I thought I’d invite him out for lunch. After all, we were both from the same part of

the world; we must have something in common, right? Hell no! And I do mean “hell.” Fire and brimstone were pretty much the topic of the day and I bit my tongue through most of the lunch. Finally, I could take no more of his one-sided pontificating and called him on some of the downright racist and bigoted statements. His response: “You’re cute when you get mad.” It was then I called for a double martini and the bill. Ok, so the boy next door didn’t work out. Next! Now I know some of you are thinking, at least it didn’t cost anything to find out he wasn’t a good match. Yes, that is true. But seriously, I would have paid to get that time back, as it truly was wasted. I was relieved when I was able to lock my front door behind me. Fortunately, he

moved away... bullet dodged! In the last couple months, I’ve met a few nice fellows through friends. They weren’t quite the boys next door, but they did live within 15km of me. I had something in common with all three of them. I went out on dates with two of them and the third never called to ask me out. These scenarios usual involve awkward situations when your friend asks you what you thought - or worse, you yourself are interested and you have to go sniffing around your friend to find out if the guy said anything about you to them. It’s mildly embarrassing, but a gal’s got to know! And yes, I did go out on a date through Magnetix Dating Agency. He was funny, upbeat, family-oriented, smart, attractive, and more. Unfortunately, there was no real chemistry there, and that is one thing no one can control. However,I was also able to give Magnetix feedback on what I liked about him, and I let them know they were getting closer to what I wanted. The way I look at it, I’ve provided Magnetix with a bit more ammo for when they go hunting for me. A friend of mine told me she’d heard I was using a dating agency and was curious about how it was going. She asked me about cost and I told her that for me, it was cheaper to have someone else look for me, as my time is valuable. She wanted to know how many dates I’d been on. I told her it wasn’t the number of dates, but the quality of the dates that counted. I haven’t found my match yet, but I know he is out there and I trust Magnetix can find him for me. Kit and Margaret are not your average 80-something-yearold women. Most would assume they have enjoyed their lives and are now settled into simple and uneventful golden years. That statement is so far from the truth - these two women are the definition of “thrill seekers.” They live their lives to the fullest and are always looking for the next great adventure. Kit, Margaret and eight other senior ladies have hooked up with me. My name is Kerri and I am the owner/operator of the Friendly Bus. I have always had a soft spot for seniors, so I decided to start a business where I take them on little day trips.

enough to get your adrenaline going, and the scenery was amazing. Everyone was laughing, smiling, and proud of themselves after our rafting adventure, and ready for more. The topic on the bus ride home was what could we do next? And the general consensus was zip lining here we come! The next thing I knew, I was driving these brave women up to Oyama Zipline. I was not sure who was more nervous, them or me? When we got to the first course, we were all really freaked out on how high it was. The ladies nominated their fearless leader (me) to go first. I walked over to the edge, and thought to myself,“I can’t do this.” I looked back and saw four

very adventurous lists. I figured if they wanted to try it, then I would grant them the opportunity. River rafting was one of the trips on last summer’s schedule, and my friends said I was crazy to do that. I ended up with ten seniors ready to go down the Adams River. It was so exciting to see their faces as we reached the first rapid - you could tell some of them were scared, but we all survived. I actually think it sparked something in these ladies, and they realized their need to live life and enjoy adventure even more. It wasn’t the craziest river you could go down, but

went upside down part of the way. This was the first seniors’group to ride the Oyama Zipline. The staff was absolutely wonderful and I would recommend anyone to go and experience all they have to offer. These women believe in living life’s adventures to the fullest. Margaret says she’s not going to learn to knit or sew if she doesn’t have to. Jan is off to Egypt in the fall to ride a camel, while Kit’s always up for the next adventure. Anna says we’re going skydiving next. I am lucky. I draw such energy and inspiration from these women and know now that as we age it doesn’t have to be about knitting, baking and watching life pass you by, but about experiencing all that you can each and every day. The Gold market:The last five years has seen a 150 per cent increase in the value of gold. A piece of 14K gold weighing the same as a penny would be worth nearly $50 at current prices. This boom has lead to many new buyers entering the industry. How can you protect yourself and realize the best return when selling your unwanted gold? Get several quotes: Firstly, not all gold buyers are paying the same. It’s best to get several offers and never let yourself be pressured to sell immediately. We advise avoiding hotel or“gold party”buyers due to the high pressure tactics sometimes used. If you must go,make sure to have several comparison quotes in advance.

Reputable buyers will pay for both the gold AND the diamonds - be cautious of anyone who offers to remove the diamonds so they can buy just the gold. Loose gemstones are extremely difficult to resell and you may destroy the finished value of a piece by taking it apart. Sell with safety: Secondly, treat gold like cash. You’d never mail cash so you shouldn’t mail gold. You’ll often find that the mail“insurance”being offered is limited to $100, which may be far less than its worth. Once your jewelry is in the mail you’re at risk - you haven’t been paid and you don’t have your gold. The companies you deal with should operate a storefront, be

licensed and have regular operating hours. They should pay you in cash, immediately, at the time of sale. This avoids the bad cheque problem, which plagued clients of a Kelowna hotel buyer. These steps help protect you by putting the transaction firmly in your control: you can get competing quotes, attend when it’s convenient, and get paid in safety. How it works: Bring your items to the buyer. Standard procedure is to sort the gold into karat ranges (gold has different purity marked by Karat ratings). The buyer may run tests to determine if the gold and/or any diamonds are real. After weighing,a tentative offer would be extended to purchase. If the offer is accepted, the legitimate buyers will need a piece of photo ID to comply with municipal bylaws. A purchase document is written, payment is made and you can leave possibly hundreds or thousands of dollars richer. Can Cosmetic Surgery Change Your Life? Submitted by Dr. Craig Crippen MD

People often ask me,“Should I have this done?” If I think the procedure is reasonable, the risks are modest, and the patient is realistic about the process,I ask them,“How bad does it make you feel, and how much better would you feel if it were changed?”

The body and the mind work together, and our hope is that helping the body will help the mind. For example, some of our coolsculpting patients go back to the gym with their new bodies and for the first time are able to work out without shame.Their workouts burn calories, and instead of continuing to spiral down into depression and inaction, they begin to lose weight and feel better. After a laser peel or botox/filler injections, a more youthful appearance can generate new confidence and improve spirits. Some people are able to make all kinds of lifestyle changes, such as getting married or divorced, finding a new boyfriend, or taking a major career risk. After a hair transplant, men may feel better on their jobs and feel more attractive to the opposite sex. The combination of improved appearance, new confidence, and the reactions of other people can contribute to positive changes in a patient’s life. But there’s another side to the story. For example, if after fat removal treatments you continue lifelong bad eating habits and do not perform any significant exercise, you will gain weight. On the emotional side, a new body image has the potential to

14 • FALL 2012 • BEYOND 50

force you to face difficult issues, such as changes in sexual relationships or less-than-supportive responses from friends and family. People may treat you differently after the surgery, and there is the occasional family member or friend who will resent you for looking and feeling better. A physician’s hope is that the improvements will contribute to a better emotional life for the patient. I also try to point out to my patients that I cannot make their lives better by performing a specific treatment. Getting Botox injections or having some fat removed will not make your failing marriage better, nor will it get you that perfect job you always wanted. However, these kinds of treatments can give us the energy and self-confidence to reach out and achieve those goals we once thought were impossible. DR.CRIPPENis an active member of Kelowna’s medical community. He and his staff at DermMedica proudly offer medical cosmetic services, which include vein & laser skin treatments. With this clinic being present in Kelowna since 1994 (previously called Kelowna Vein Clinic & Aesthetic Solutions), Dr.Crippen makes it his greatest priority to see that he and his staff exhibit technical excellence and attention to patient needs.

A month after tragically losing our first pet, my husband and I found ourselves searching through the local SPCA shelter. We were late bloomers when it came to pet ownership, but from the time we first became “surrogate parents,” there was no looking back. Although we were deeply grieving the loss of our beautiful cat, Stewie, we decided to take a leap of faith and open our hearts and home once again. I’ve often heard that we don’t choose our pets, they choose us. This seemed to be the case for me, as I kept seeing this little striped tabby each time I wandered through the shelter. This cat would watch me through the glass partition and jump on the ledge walking alongside me, chatting through the window.A few days later a staff member allowed me to go in to see her. There were about a dozen cats that were afflicted with a common cat virus and needed to be segregated. I was permitted to go into the room for a short time and then had to exit the building immediately,so as not to infect the other animals in the shelter. As soon as I entered the“sick room,”the little cat that had caught my attention jumped into my arms from the floor. was a true comedian and made us laugh with her playful antics and funny facial expressions. She recovered quickly from her virus and started to thrive immediately in her new environment. A few days after we brought her home, Lucy jumped up on the sofa to snuggle, crawling onto my chest, and tucking her head under my bathrobe. Then, suddenly, and without warning, she popped her head up,looked straight into my eyes, jumped on my right breast, and started licking and pawing madly. I grabbed her and placed her gently on the floor as my husband and I puzzled over this odd and unacceptable behaviour. A few minutes later I started to develop a skin rash from her saliva, went to wash it off and that’s when I discovered the lump in my right breast. The next morning I was at my doctor’s office, two days later I was diagnosed with breast cancer, ten

I have since learned of many stories in which both cats and dogs have been able to detect cancer because of their keen sense of smell. It is said that they will often lick and dig in an attempt to remove the tumor from the unsuspecting patient. Just for the record,Lucy has never exhibited behaviour like that again. Some cats are lickers but Lucy is not. In fact, she prefers to “bite the hand that feeds her” rather than lick it, especially when she wants to get her point across. She is feisty, independent, and affectionate on her terms only. She is also head over heals in love with my husband, but that’s another story. My breast cancer would have been detected three weeks later, as I was scheduled to have my routine annual mammogram. I have a strong and steadfast support group of family and friends, who constantly remind me of all the interesting things that life brings. And I am living proof that our pets often provide us with much needed comfort,

So, in my household, we turn a blind eye when Lucy occasionally uses an upholstered chair as a scratch post, and we take delight in spoiling her rotten. She makes life interesting every day and I am thankful that she “chose” us. I have no doubt that she was meant to come into our lives when she did and she is our miracle cat. I am NOT a certified“crazy cat lady,”but is it any wonder that I love Lucy?

Chiropractic

More than Just a Low Back Therapy Have you ever heard a comment that makes you think, “now THAT’S interesting!” I was out golfing last week, and through the usual chitchat while walking to find my ball (no, I am NOT a scratch golfer!), one of my fellow players made such a comment. He asked me what I did for a living. I told him I’m a chiropractor. His response was,“Awesome, my back is sore! Can I just lay down here and you can crack me?” I thought,“Interesting comment...” When I was younger, my dad used to see a chiropractor. From what I remember, he would go in with a sore lower back, and after an adjustment or two, the pain was reduced considerably. Chiropractic works fabulously for low back pain. I know this from my own personal experience, having been in two car accidents within a week of each other. My

As I looked into chiropractic career, I found it interesting that chiropractic can help with a lot more than just low back pain (but that’s beyond the scope of this article). On its most basic level, chiropractic helps with the alignment and motion of the joints... any joints! At the spine, though, this helps remove pressure and irritation of the nerves. Because of the variety of things chiropractic can help with, 17 years in practice is still interesting! Many of the patients I see in a day aren’t suffering from low back pain. They come to see me on a “wellness” basis. Some find they sleep better. Some notice they have less digestive issues. Others have

Also, after 17 years, life is still interesting because of people’s comments when they find out I’m a chiropractor. “I’m glad I don’t need you.” “I have a sore back. Can you work on me right here?” Makes me wonder if life would be even more interesting as proctologist...

Overcoming the Stigma of

Teeth Loss

People who are edentulous are missing important parts of their bodies - 32 to be exact. They are physically impaired, according to the World Health Organization.Losing your teeth often has devastating consequences. People without teeth avoid eating a lot of healthy foods; particularly fruit, vegetables and other dietary fibres. They are forced to eat more processed foods that are of less nutritional value. This is particularly harmful for those vulnerable to malnutrition.

Without teeth their faces sag, lips cave in and their noses become closer to their chins, making them appear older. They hesitate to smile and are often perceived to be unfriendly, grumpy or mad. Many will not eat in public, leading to social isolation, loneliness and depression. They are often ashamed and embarrassed by their condition and this lowers their confidence, self-esteem, and makes their life less enjoyable. If you are missing your teeth you are not alone. A recent

of dental implants and needlessly struggling with problem dentures. Traditionally, false teeth were held in only by suction and supported only by the soft tissues of your mouth. They move when you bite on them and can fall out when you smile, laugh or sneeze.Dental implants are like root replacements. They are placed in your jawbone and the denture is attached to them. Because the dental implants function like the natural roots, the dentures feel very much like your natural teeth did. Now, a unique, cost-efficient dental implant procedure can be one of the fastest ways to replace your dentures. A fixed denture consists of a dental implant bridge that is supported by four or more dental implants. It can often be done in a single day,so that you never have to go without teeth.Patients who have received this treatment say they feel a renewed sense of confidence, enjoy an improved quality of life, and have regained the ability to eat and taste the foods they love. As with most things, you don’t really miss something until it’s gone. Fortunately, there are great options available to replace the teeth that you have lost. DR. DUNCAN CHAMBERS is a Board Certified Dental Specialist in replacing missing teeth. He has over 20 years experience in creating comfortable dentures, stabilizing dentures with implants and making fixed dentures.

survey by Health Canada found one in five adults from age 60-79 were missing all of their teeth; the technical term is “edentulism.” Surprisingly, the number of people wearing dentures is on the rise. Advances in dentistry have helped reduce the percentage of people requiring dentures from 50% in 1990 to only 20% in 2009. However, the number of people “beyond 5O”has almost doubled since 1990 and represents one of the fastest growing groups in Canadian society. In “A Portrait of Seniors in Canada,” released by Statistics Canada,Canadians aged 65 to 74 increased from 1.5 million to 2.2 million between 1981 and 2005, and the number is anticipated to be 4.8 million by 2031, and 9.8 million by 2036. Teeth are most often lost or extracted due to the effect of two dental diseases - Periodontal Disease and Dental Caries. These diseases are slow to progress and are cumulative in nature, so that a disproportional number of elderly are affected. For those unfortunate enough to lose all of their teeth, there is some good news. Dental implants can help solve many of the problems of dentures. Dental implants have been used to replace teeth and secure dentures for over 40 years. It is quite surprising that so many people have never even heard www.WelcomeToKelowna.com • Your Portal to the Community

angels among us

Be an Angel & Donate Submitted by Laurel D’Andrea

For the past six years we have used this department to recognize everyday people who make a difference. Our community is overflowing with people who contribute so much, whether it be their time, talent or resources. Angels Among Us was created to showcase those individuals for all that they do. It’s our way of saying “thank-you” for sharing, “thank-you” for caring, but most of all, “thank you” for wanting to give back. For now I want to thank all of you in advance for what

you are about to do. The TELUS Community Ambassadors, along with Beyond 50, have partnered for several years on a project that is near and dear to my heart. Each winter we do what we can to support the homeless. It’s called “Care for Our Community.” The concept is simple; we collect gently used clothing from the community, friends, family and coworkers and we go down to City Park and hand them out.The TELUS Community Ambassadors also provide funding and volunteers at the Kelowna Gospel Mission on that day. We work with the amazing kitchen staff at KGM to prepare and serve lunch.

Here is what we need from you. Go through your closets and call us to pick up any of the following items:(men & women) • Jeans • Coats • Sweatshirts or sweaters • Socks • Warm clothing - long johns, long sleeve t-shirts • Toques & gloves • Used backpacks Once they’re ready, call us and we will pick them up so we can give them out to those in need. The other option is to come down and drop your items off on the day of the event. The date for this year’s event is Saturday,November 24. We will be setting up at 9am and will be there until 1pm. We set up at the entrance to the parking lot. You will see our vehicles, tables and friendly volunteers having fun and doing good things. Contact info: Laurel 250-878-9194 or via email laurel@ beyond50mag.com We always contact the agencies who provide assistance to those needing help, so they can let their clients know we will be out in the park on that day and to come down and get what they need. If we have anything leftover, we donate the items to thrift stores that support the non-profit sector. Lastly, thanks very much for being my angels for this issue. If each of us does a little bit the world really is a better place.

I volunteer!

Volunteer your time at Kelowna's Gospel Mission, and help us serve over 30,000 meals this winter. Shelter • Meals • Dental Clinic Recovery/Addiction Programs Thrift Store • and more... Donate online

Embarrassed about your feet? Don’t want to take off your shoes?

We can help.

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus is very common and unsightly. It’s also potentially dangerous for those with diabetes, circulatory problems, or immuno suppression, but more often it’s just embarrassing. We have a quick, easy, painless solution that’s Health Canada approved - the GenesisPlus Laser. This gentle laser beam passes through the nail eradicating the nail fungus and causes no damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. This non-invasion treatment has no side affects or down time. Results are not immediately visible but as the healthy nail grows in you will see that the fungus is no longer present. The GenesisPlus Laser is also powerful enough to effectively destroy Plantar warts in one or two treatments.

Recently, my wife Pat and our friend, Linda Frandsen, along with nine other Canadians from PEI to White Rock, B.C., participated in a two-week build in Santa Fe, Argentina. For Pat and I, it was our fifth build. Our other builds have been primarily in Central America so we could practice our Spanish, but there are build opportunities available almost anywhere in the world. travel 2007, Pat had wondered whether she’d be able to handle it physically, but it hasn’t been a concern, as there are so many different jobs on a worksite - shoveling, bucket brigades, tying rebar, painting, entertaining the neighbourhood kids, mixing cement, etc. The median age of our Argentina team was 59 and Nestor (one of the homeowners) said, “You guys really worked hard for old people.” Guess it didn’t translate too well from the Spanish... HFH is for the working poor. To qualify, families usually need to have at least one child, be willing to contribute significant sweat equity and be able to afford a small, 10-12-year no-interest mortgage payment. The Argentina affiliate offers families creative programs that we hadn’t seen on our previous builds, such as assisted rental and renovation programs, and they also provide financial and legal literacy training for the families. In rural areas, HFHA builds “seed homes” in stages and these can be expanded by the owners once they can afford it. Besides providing simple, decent, affordable housing, HFH

Upon completion of our build, we shared food, participated in a closing ceremony and then said our goodbyes to the families and the local Habitat workers. We had many experiences to reflect on during our bus ride back to Buenos Aires. The following day, we travelled to an estancia ‘Los Dos Hermanos’ for two days of relaxation. We went horseback riding, swimming, rested in hammocks

and enjoyed each other’s company. The Argentine cuisine was fabulous and any weight lost during the build was quickly replaced! Most of our group took extra time to be tourists, exploring the spectacular scenery and experiencing the unique culture (including the tango!). Buenos Aires was a must see with side trips to Mendoza, Cordoba and neighbouring Uruguay. Each build is unique and has its own lifelong memories. Our team members continue to share pictures and plans for the future. We are already contemplating our next cultural adventure in 2013 in a country we have yet to visit. Travel: It Keeps Life Interesting! Submitted by Dawn Rueckl

Saint Augustine once said, “The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” Those dedicated to a lifestyle of continued learning, personal health, and general wellbeing are definitely not content to stay on the same page. Not only is travel one of the few activities that is interesting before, during and after the event, it is good for your health, too. For those people, travel is essential. At the risk of oversimplification, quality of life as you age is directly related to quality of health.Good health means sound mind and useful body. Maintaining good health means exercising and stretching mind and body to keep them fit and working, plus feeding both the right materials to make the ground fertile for growth. Travel can help provide all these things.

Travel is good for the brain. It allows the brain a chance to stretch and grow by constantly being challenged by the unfamiliar. The brain is presented with new perspectives, thereby creating new connections. You meet people and form relationships based on a foundation that is unfamiliar. You develop new skills by challenging yourself with tasks and activities that you may not have tried before. You expand your sensory exper-

ience by trying new foods, listening to different music, and seeing varied landscapes. All of these stretch and enhance the brain. A lifestyle that incorporates constant learning keeps life interesting, and is also important to good health. Traveling beyond the familiar and into the greater world provides a source of education that cannot be found elsewhere. You gain firsthand knowledge of economy, politics, history, geography and sociology. Travel allows you to truly live in the moment. When the packing and planning is done and you hit the road to discovery, leaving the familiar in the rearview mirror, you truly are in the zone. There is so much new stimuli forcing you to use your brain in new and unfamiliar ways, that you truly are living in the here and now - something that is very good for your sense of wellbeing.

Living in the moment is great for the body as well. Centering on the here and now releases the stresses of daily life and ongoing concerns, allowing the body to relax.Reducing stress has been linked with improved blood pressure, increased concentration, reduction of headaches, and easing of digestive disorders. But part of the joy in travel is in the whole process. You research destinations, you plan your itinerary, you learn how people there work, live and play, and this is all before you leave home. Then there is the experience of the joy of travel and discovery itself. And after, you continue to relive the experience by sharing it with your loved ones through stories and pictures. It is an investment that keeps on giving. That is what makes traveling so interesting. Travel is also an ambassador to world peace. As the great author Mark Twain

once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.” Every time you connect with people who live and work in different countries, cultures, or even neighborhoods, you make a connection. And when you increase connections between people, you increase understanding. And when you increase understanding, the world becomes a smaller and more peaceful place. Making the world a better place is definitely conducive to feeling good about yourself, which is of course good for your health. So what are you waiting for? Travel it’s interesting and good for you! DAWN RUECKL, CTP, is Vice President of Wells Gray Tours and has been fortunate enough to work in the travel industry for most of her adult life. She began her love affair with the tourism working at Expo ‘86 in Vancouver, and because she knows what's good for her, has continued to share the joy of travel and the world ever since.

Love to Sing? This is for you!

Submitted by Margaret Brunsden

Singing at Benvoulin Church as part of “Homes for the Holidays.”

That is the unofficial motto of the White Sails Chorus, part of Sweet Adelines International, based here in Kelowna. They are a group of approximately 25 women, who sing four-part harmony - and love it! “I have always enjoyed singing,”says chorus member Margaret Brunsden, “but never had an outlet for it until I joined the White Sails. This isn’t just standing in front of an audience, holding a music book - this is entertaining and engaging the audience; making them laugh - or maybe cry - but providing a whole experience that isn’t easily forgotten.” Margaret has been singing

with the chorus for nearly 16 years, and has discovered first-hand how it has made her life more interesting. “There are huge opportunities for personal improvement - not just in singing technique and musical knowledge, but in management skills, selfconfidence, and even health.” Margaret explains that each week, the chorus works through different exercises to improve breath control and vocal production, and that the knowledgeable music team is always there to offer assistance when necessary.

Fortunately for many of the members, the ability to read music is NOT a requirement, as “learning tracks” (usually in mp3 format) are provided to assist in memorizing each song. And the other benefits? As with any organization, there is a management team to ensure the smooth running of the group, and the chorus members take their turn with record-keeping, fundraising, and also the social activities that make this hobby even more fun. Margaret also notes that it’s hard to be shy when you are singing - and that it’s hard to sing with poor posture! Their regular physical warm-ups are designed to strengthen the body core and improve posture - and those benefits are carried into everyday life. “It’s the performing!” says Debrah Thiessen, another chorus member. “That’s what makes my life more interesting! We recently put on a Strawberry Tea at the Benvoulin Heritage Church Hall and it was so much fun! We had a ‘special guest’ (the Queen!) and our audience loved it. We perform throughout the community as often as we can, and had a fabulous time doing ‘Singing Valentines’ back in

February. Some of our ‘victims’ seemed embarrassed at first, but you could tell how special it was for them to know that their husband, wife or sweetheart had taken the time to plan ahead. And as we presented them with a red carnation and a card, one or two of the big tough guys got quite teary-eyed.” The White Sails Chorus has two musical directors - Bettina Garry and Bev Swan. They both enjoy directing, but neither wants to give up singing, so they take turns. Bettina says: “Since the chorus was founded in 1972, we have sung under the direction of six women and two men, in an amazing selection of flamboyant fabrics, colours, ruffles, and sequins. Our numbers on stage have hovered around 25,and our ages have ranged from 12 to 73.We have organized our fair share of shows and fundraisers. We have sung our fair share of telegrams, and Christmas carolled our way through the most hectic time of the year. We have laughed, cried, argued, and made up. We have welcomed strangers into our midst and waved goodbye to good friends. And through it all we have never stopped singing. At 40 years‘young’this year, we are in our prime - vibrant, lively, and going for it!” “To request a performance, call Debrah at 250-491-8272, and for Membership information and news of the Open House to be held on Tuesday, September 25 call Margaret at 250-764-8808. between 1965 to 1975 when bands and songwriters were free to express themselves, both musically and idealistically. The songs in this show are all considered to be “One Hit Wonders,” which means they were the single BIG hit for each band or artist, or the song they are primarily known for. Due to the popularity of these hits back then, many of these songs were subsequently covered by major artists such as Glenn Campbell, Tom Jones, and even Elvis. Rann Berry grew up with these songs, and was influenced by each and every one chosen for the show. “This music is what made me want to become a musician,” says Berry. The idea for the show has been years in the making. As Berry explains, “I was looking for

After a number of trips to Las Vegas to see shows like “Jersey Boys” and a great tribute program called the “Beatles Show,” an idea began to emerge. Creating a show dedicated to one hit wonders was the answer, and a musical journey back to the 60s and 70s that features songs that so many of us love and remember, began to take shape. “For so many of us this music is the soundtrack of our youth,” says Berry. Over two years have been spent carefully choosing the specific songs that Berry thought would resonate best with an audience. The next step was to enlist the help of long time friend and fellow musician Justin Glibbery to act as musical director on the project. Justin’s daunting task included
