Welcome to a Familiar Face: Laura Tomaka is Named Director of CSG Midwest

Laura Tomaka was selected by the Midwestern Legislative Conference Executive Committee as director of CSG Midwest following the retirement of longtime director Mike McCabe earlier this year (see his farewell message on page 14). Tomaka first joined the CSG Midwest staff in 1996, and most recently served as its director of policy and professional development. Over the years, Tomaka provided staff support to numerous MLC policy committees and other entities including, since 1997, serving as lead staffer of the CSG Midwest Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development, one of the region’s most successful programs. In her new role, she will lead the efforts of the CSG Midwest staff team in support of the Midwestern Legislative Conference and other regional networks of state officials. Tomaka will also contribute to the organization’s national mission as a member of the CSG senior management team.

CSG MLC to Explore Food Security Policy

Michigan Sen. Roger Victory chose food security as the 2023 CSG Midwest Legislative Conference Chair’s initiative. Throughout Victory’s year as chair, the MLC will develop resources and programming to support the initiative. According to the Department of Agriculture, more than 10% of U.S. households in 2021 were not “food secure,” meaning these households did not have access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

Applications Open for 2023 BILLD Institute

Applications are now open for the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development program. BILLD, which is available exclusively for Midwestern legislators, helps policymakers within their first four years of service develop and grow leadership skills. Legislators will participate in professional development and leadership workshops, and explore important policy issues with nationally renowned scholars, experts, legislative leaders and colleagues from across the 11-member state region. This year’s five-day educational experience will be held August 18-22 in Madison, Wisconsin. CSG Midwest members are invited to apply by April 17. CLICK TO LEARN MORE.
