Judicial Work at the Interface of Mental Health & Criminal Justice Apply for Training!
Judicial Work at the Interface of Mental Health and Criminal Justice is a four-hour live interactive training designed for all judges who hear criminal cases. The program was created by judges and psychiatrists working in partnership with the American Psychiatric Foundation (APF) and the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center with input from the National Judicial College and SAMHSA’s GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation. Presented by pairs of expert judges and psychiatrists from the Judges’ Leadership Initiative for Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health and the Psychiatric Leadership Group for Criminal Justice, Judicial Work at the Interface of Mental Health and Criminal Justice prepares judges to:
Define basic terminology about mental illnesses and cooccurring substance use disorders Articulate the role of criminogenic risk and how it affects individuals with behavioral health needs Explain the overrepresentation of mental illnesses in the criminal justice system Improve interactions with individuals with behavioral health needs in their courtrooms Achieve better outcomes for individuals with behavioral health needs in their jurisdictions

Judicial Work at the Interface of Mental Health and Criminal Justice: Includes a presentation and video case studies illustrating issues that arise in the courtroom with discussion to build practical skills Is accompanied by several practical handouts, including resource guides and the popular laminated Judges’ Guide to Mental Illnesses in the Courtroom Has been piloted in Illinois and Wisconsin, and will be presented to Oregon’s judiciary in October 2013
APF and the CSG Justice Center are now accepting applications from other states interested in arranging the training module for their judiciaries, and will cover travel costs for the presenters. We encourage you to apply!

Pay for the costs of meeting materials; these will include photocopies and laminated bench cards Provide appropriate audio/visual facilities for the training Distribute evaluation forms (provided by training planners) to all participants at the training Provide feedback on the training to training planners Assist training planners to distribute an online survey (provided by training planners) to all participants six weeks after the training
