Using the What Works in Reentry Clearinghouse 31
Key Findings: Substance Abuse Substance Abuse • TherapeuBc CommuniBes tend to be effecBve at reducing both recidivism and substance abuse. • TherapeuBc CommuniBes are most effecBve when they are gender-‐responsive. • Evidence suggests TherapeuBc CommuniBes may be effecBve approaches for treaBng co-‐occurring disorders
32
Key Findings: Substance Abuse, con=nued Substance Abuse • DUI Programs can reduce recidivism and instances of alcohol use • Substance Abuse / TherapeuBc Community programming may be most effecBve for people at a higher risk of recidivism • Offender Substance Abuse Pre-‐Release Program (designed for people with significant substance abuse needs) and Social Support with Drug Treatment showed significant benefits on reentry and substance abuse outcomes
33
Key Findings: Educa=on
Educa=on
• Overall, the impact of educaBonal programs on reentry outcomes was mixed evidence Ø Two studies found that post-‐secondary educaBon programs reduce recidivism, however, two studies of GED programs did not find staBsBcally significant effects on post-‐release outcomes. Ø For vocaBonal programs, with one study showed posiBve effects on post-‐release outcomes, two showed no effect, and one showed a harmful effect. • Given that low levels of educaBon can be a significant barrier to successful reentry, further research is needed to clarify on the relaBonship between educaBon programs and successful reentry 34
Key Findings: Substance Abuse, con=nued Family
• Two studies on the effects of visitaBon suggest that enacBng policies that promote visitaBon by friends and family members can potenBally contribute to reducBons in recidivism. • Few studies have evaluated the effecBveness of family-‐based programs for individuals returning from incarceraBon, and of those that have been conducted, most do not measure post-‐ release outcomes such as recidivism or employment. • Much more research is needed to examine the effects of family-‐ based programs on reentry outcomes, and why visitaBon seems to be correlated with beier recidivism outcomes. 35
