design is
freedom
The need for a renewed wise attention to the topic of social graphic design is very urgent in today's society. A conscious return to this specific field of application in visual design would fill the gap that often stands between institutions and civil society by helping to awake a strong social consciousness. In the Babel of messages, overloading is often the main risk. The guide-voice may be inaudible or unintelligible and information that really matters may be omitted or put aside. However, if as Sartori says, "every increase of demo-power should yield to an increase in the demo-knowledge" languages and first of all communication-design become essential to enable a proper exercise of democratic participation. Today more than ever graphic design has to dare and to be self-aware: You can not be disengaged and still conceive the art of communication. Graphic messages can reach many people and have a great impact the community itself. Pieracini for example stated that "when the information is manipulated the designer should simply decline the job offer". This sense of social "ethical mandate" should be encouraged and strengthened. With this aim we would like to exploit the Internet and to propose a poster design contest which will focus on a social subject. We hope this will spread the fruitful seeds of doubt and design ethic. As AGFronzoni once said: "Those who do not design have already chosen to be designed." A different culture is possible: it is up to us to recognise that it currently exists in our minds, in our words and in our daily choices.

"Even though it is illegal to capture bears in both India and Pakistan, more than 1,600 sloth bears are being forced to "dance" by madaris—the people who capture and keep the bears. "Bear cubs—who are barely 1 year old—squeal in agony as red-hot needles are jabbed through their noses and thick ropes are forced through the throbbing wounds. When the ropes are tugged, the bears lift their legs and "dance." Most of their teeth are pulled out, and they are forced to perform for up to 12 hours a day. Bears are "trained" to dance through a regime of pain and starvation. Many cubs die before the training begins because of the stress of capture, the terrible transportation conditions, starvation dehydration, and rough handling. Although bears used in these acts would live up to 30 years in the wild, they rarely live more than eight years in captivity." source- PETA website. (people for the ethical treatment of animals.)
"welcome to the circus" is an illustration i have done is to raise awareness of "dancing bears" and the cruelty these bears endure from a young age. in the illustration however the tables are turned on the ringmaster of the circus, with him being the one who is made to dance. And not just bears, but all animals that are subjected to unnecessary cruelty solely for our "entertainment." The expression is a basic need for a designer and sometimes the work we do for our clients are not enough for a soul voracious of freedom of expression. As a book for a writer, a column for a journalist a piece of art for an author, we search for an opportunity where one can make a point of view, an opinion, positive or negative criticism, a form of expression. Where I find this opportunity is in graphic expression, more specifically in a social poster.
As once said Professor Juan Antonio Ramirez "The poster tends towards formal simplification in response to the need for immediate perception of the message, and therefore it should avoid any complexity that hinders the required clarity of the message".

How often have I discussed with my colleagues how difficult it is to please a customer and his demand when one disagrees with what has been asked to do as a designer. But we have to do it anyway because those are the projects that ensure the check by the end of the month and at the same time, they allow us to have the pleasure / luxury to participate in competitions and invitations with social topics, which is in deed our artistic fuel.
This is the challenge that I bring to the social poster design, simplification translated as effectiveness, both in the message as in the chart. The poster with a universal language that is understood quickly and automatically. Persuade the viewer with a repertoire of meanings that evoke thoughts emotions, feelings and sensations. And to achieve influence over the person in a subliminal way, inducing people to rethink, reconsider or reaffirm their position on the theme of the poster in question.
With this in mind, I made a series of social posters. Both of them represent social problems and phenomena in American society. The first represents murders that with more frequency take place in Schools and Colleges in the US. The second one shows that more of 50% of families in America have a gun at home. www.davidcriado.com http://davidcriado.blogspot.com

story by john j. powers, illustration by mark andresen alice's paintings weren't originals: they were cheap copies on some sort of cardboard but extravagantly framed and placed everywhere in the apartment, in every room, and every one of them scared the shit out of me. in my father's bedroom, hiding a growing crack in the tenement wall, christ knelt at gethsemane, on hard green stones in the black night. his white, sweating face turned upward to his heavenly father. he had long hair, green eyes and wore a magnificent purple robe falling about him. the painter showed off his talent for intricate detail in the flow of the robe beyond the body---the robe entirely covering the little mound he knelt upon. all these years i've just assumed he was kneeling but all you see is the flowing robe. his hands were tightly folded beneath his chin. a glowing halo surrounded his head. i don't know if i'm imagining this but i seem to remember an assortment of cherubim in the dark, on high, as it were. in alices's own room there was a large painting of two blood - red sacred hearts. they were identical in size and set in a bright-blue, solid background. both of them were perfectly unnatural but their vivid colour and odd shadowing suggested something very alive. a very english crown, also identical, sat on top each of them. a large sword cut into one of the hearts from beneath its crown, straight down to to its lower tip. bright drops of blood dripping from its edge toward the bottom of the painting this sword was said to represent christ's sacrifice: i don't know how i know this, but it was distinct from the sword piercing the other heart at an angle, from the left side. this other heart was said to represent hiis mother, another sacrifice of sorts. her sword went straight through as well, its tip protruding from the the heart on its other side, and there were just as many drops of blood. i counted the drops of blood from each heart: there were four from each of them. in the living room there was a print of a fairly well-known painting of mary in another flowing robe, haloed, with porcelain-white skin, blue eyes, and a transparent veil. an unconvincing hand, oversized for its body and rather plump, came out from under her robe and pointed to the center of her chest, where breasts were politely implied. now i'm thinking that she was a rather italian or even IRISH mary. her fingers pointed to a small heart centered below her neck. the heart was not unlike the hearts above but i think it was blue rather than red. no drops of blood dripped onto mary's light and somehow unreal robe. far smaller than the other paintings, this one was carefully placed atop a library shelf where alice, my grandmother, had preserved very old books from the old country and, for some reason, the autobiography of the american film actress, mary astor, who appeared as the sluttish femme fatale in the 1941 version of THE MALTESE FALCON. i remember how mary astor's eyes filled with tears--real tears--when she realized that humphrey bogart was going to give her up to the police. she didn't express any emotion until this moment, when she knew she was doomed.
Eventually
This illustration I did concerns about the topic of freedom of speech or the importance of having people’s thoughts heard and understood by the public and world generally. This conceptual illustration visually talks about how many people in the world are forced not to speak up and voice their important opinion about key issues and topics everyday. Issues and topics that are ground breaking and ones that will change the world for the better in many cases. But I believe through a lot of passion, great effort and persistence, along with support from many sources, people eventually get what’s inside their minds heard. Their invaluable thoughts also spreads onward to future generations of people, making the world a much better and freer place. Sometimes, when the odds seem to be against the ones that are forced not to speak their mind, wonderful miracles do happen, and eventually, people do finally get the truth of what they think and feel out by voice.

It is being held in South Africa, beginning on 11 June and scheduled to conclude on 11 July 2010. The tournament is the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations. The final is forecast to be among the most-watched events ever, possibly behind only the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games. THE SPIRIT OF FIFA The Spirit of FIFA could be described as the strive to win, to perform as a team, to get back to your feet after a hard knock, to cooperate, to do your part best and then let go of the ball. Football is very much like life as it imitates life. In those 90 minutes of intense action all the different aspects of life are visible on the field. You can see passion, motivation, enthusiasm, courage, hope, anger, forgiveness, joy of winning, and heartbreak of losing a match. Football is life itself and that is why the entire world connects with it. brief Design an A3 size poster that celebrates the spirit of FIFA. Your poster could be focused on a player, the game of football or the spirit behind the game that unites the world. You can also share the highlights of this world cup where Africa is the backdrop. You can also typographically illustrate quotes / thoughts on the game of football. The idea is to have a central theme of FIFA but you're free to explore possibilities. In the darkness of individuality there is no distance , there is no horizontal. In the dark minds of individual action is dictated by rules intangibles. In the darkness under the rationality of language changes The light dazzles, entering with force, creeps and glides bypassing obstacles. Outlines what had hitherto unseen in the dark.
