foreword Dear Buyers, Kirtika Singh Executive Director All India Artisans and Craftworkers Welfare Association (AIACA)

The All India Artisans and Craftworkers Welfare Association (AIACA) is delighted to launch its 2012 catalogue. This year, we showcase a contemporary collection of handcrafted home and lifestyle products designed to add colour and a folksy touch to modern, urbane homes. AIACA’s Craftmark initiative has helped protect India’s unique craft techniques by distinguishing them from industrialised, mass produced ‘craft-like’ products. The Craftmark certification prohibits child labour and guarantees the ‘hand-made’ aspect of any craft technique used in production. Craftmark strives to help artisans produce high-quality products for a competitive, global marketplace. By buying a Craftmark product, you are committing to source genuine handcrafted products that help conserve distinctive craft traditions and secure livelihoods of rural artisans. The 2012 catalogue introduces a wide range of craft techniques—bamboo weaving, hand-embroidery, handloom, Mashru and Ikkat weaving, tie & dye, Namda felting, Punja weaving and hand-tufting. This catalogue features approximately 200 standalone products spread over 10 broad product categories. By denoting genuine Indian handicrafts, developing sector-wide minimum standards for labelling a product as a handicraft product, and increasing consumer awareness of distinct handicraft traditions, the Craftmark initiative helps Indian craftworkers access mainstream markets. As a result of the Craftmark initiative, AIACA has been able to create long term international market linkages for Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs). Linkage of small producers to mainstream buyers remains the biggest source of transformational and inclusive social impact for the Indian handicraft and handloom sector. We hope you enjoy this catalogue and continue to source products from our range of catalogues available at aiacaonline.org.

tribal craft 01

02

The Todas are a pastoral tribe from the Nilgiri forests of Tamil Nadu. They have their own distinctive style of embroidery called pugur (or flower). In earlier days, the Toda women were believed to have developed this unique embroidery style using wildflowers as a base and the skin of a wild plant as thread. Later, the embroidery was done on matted fabrics that allowed for a highly calculated, count-based style using woollen or cotton threads. The exquisite beauty of the geometric Toda embroidery lies in its immaculate execution on both, the front and reverse sides of the fabric. The colour of the base fabric is always light cream or white, while the woollen threads are red and black. Traditional Toda embroidery does not permit the usage of any other colour except red and black. These colours are highly symbolic of the tribe’s cultural beliefs: the base white represents purity and innocence; red depicts adolescence, youth and passion; black stands for maturity and death. This is the first glimpse of the collections being developed in the Toda project; a complete range of home lifestyle products such as table linen, bedspreads and cushions will be introduced 2012-2013
