Browse through these pages to find the latest in beach and swimwear and read Shivan & Narresh as they chalk out swimsuits to flatter different body types. We continue with our catalogue on jewellery, skincare and home interiors. In our fashion feature, we have Carol Singh who guides you on how to dress sexy despite the heat and in fact embrace the styling options it brings with it. Elisabetta Canali talks to us about styling Indian men, the importance of perfect tailoring and style trends. Meet Sawhney & Co. is quickly gaining popularity as a one stop shop for home interiors and solutions. We catch up with Meet at his Gurgaon showroom to talk trends, brands, and competitiveness. For the month of June, one cannot ignore the urge to travel and head to cooler places. We bring you few of the leading and most luxurious beach resorts close to home. his former model and Miss Delhi 1998 celebrates life with friends, family and “people who really matter”. Now an emcee with more than 150 live shows to her credit, Ramneek Pantal is said to be one of the most gracious hosts on Delhi’s party circuit. When asked what makes people long for an invitation to one of her elegant social do’s, she says, “For me, celebrations are for family and friends. I don’t believe in calling a huge crowd and having a mishmash of a get together. Too much of a crowd in a crammed space is a spoiler.” On her reputation as a fabulous entertainer, she comments, “To become a good host, a personal touch is required. When inviting people, I make sure my closest special guests get private invitations by way of calls, SMSs and emails. I ensure that the food and ambience is in sync with my guest list. Keeping the kind of people you’re calling in mind is the most important aspect. Groups should be like minded.” Her partying frequency could be anything from thrice a week to once a month. This loyal beer drinker believes that the “A bar should never run out of drinks... Good food and music are the other essentials of a good celebration.” The most memorable party for Ramneek was her recent surprise birthday bash by husband Rajat Pantal at Fio Country Kitchen & Bar, Garden of Five Senses. “It was overwhelming when I learnt that everybody who was invited showed up even though informed just a day before.”

RAMNEEK PANTAL

Message to partyholics “Delhi is very much a party place. However, people prefer winding up earlier now after a few unfor tunate incidents in the capital. One should learn to hold your drinks…go out with your driver…and if you love to drive, make sure you don’t ram into something! Don’t spoil somebody else’s good time.”

o me, the spirit of c e leb r a tion is to celebrate life! Celebration presents an opportunity to reflect on the trajectory of the glorious moments that traverse through every day, be it with my horses, friends, loved ones and family or events,” says Daksh, who coowns Master Racing Pvt. Ltd. that recently won

DAKSH OBEROI The North India Derby 2012-13. A regular with the Delhi party circle, he believes in making the guests feel appreciated. “A little love, a smile and comfort for the guests are the basic needs to being a good host. Of course, food, music, beverages and the right set of fun loving people are the added spice to the parties.” A great fan of Shiro, the night club, Daksh’s preference for drinks, while on a night out is very stable. “I am a whiskey/scotch person. My personal favorite is Johnny Walker’s Double Black. Beer days are for pool parties or home parties with friends. I’m cautious of my drinking habits. I refrain from alcoholic beverages during the day and when driving.”

Message to partyholics “Every party takes time to get warmed up and once it starts galloping, that is the time when conversations with a blend of music takes control. Your attitude makes it a good or a bad party. I personally think that there is nothing which can spoil a party, provided everybody follows The Code of Conduct because bad behavior can spoil any social occasion.”

C

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? It’s large, luxurious and grand. What makes for a perfect night out? The right mix of friends, enchanting ambience, scintillating music and the right attitude. How often do you party in a week? 3-4 times a week. I am always game for a fun evening. Where do you like to party in Delhi? It could be anywhere – a friend’s house, bar or a restaurant. Wherever there is foot tapping music. Preferred cocktail/drink? Sangria or Red Wine. Favourite par t y clothes ? Comfortable and classy wear. A straight knee length dress is what I prefer wearing. Has the 1am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? I think that it has made me realize the value of time. An early start and an early wind-up keeps me up and going for the next day. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security? Delhi needs more policing. I usually keep a driver and PSO, and never leave home without my husband.

C

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? Delhi’s night life is pretty vivid and definitely crazy. It all starts out with a bunch of friends going out for a few snacks and drinks leading to a night of loud, crazy, jiving amount of fun. What makes for a perfect night out? A perfect night out is about having a good hearty laugh with great friends, eating great food, checking into a lovely restaurant or even a movie, drinking to a limit and getting back home safe. How often do you party in a week? Partying every week seems way too much for a workaholic designer like me. I go out about twice a month at least. I make plans with my wife and friends or family to meet up for a meal. Where do you like to party in Delhi? My favourite party place is Hauz Khas Village. Preferred cocktail/drink? I love Mojito

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? Delhi party scene is fun, eclectic and

electric. What makes for a perfect night out? Friends, good conversation and great food. How often do you party in a week? Nowadays not very often. My 5 year old daughter Daniela and work keep me busy. Where do you like to party in Delhi? Delhi party scene is great, it is very hard to pick a spot but I have to say Olive would rank very high on my list. Preferred cocktail/drink? Screwdriver, Green Apple Martini and Red Wine. Favourite party clothes? Whatever I feel like wearing. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to dressing. Has the 1am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? Not really, I start work very early so I generally never stay too late. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures you take to ensure security? It’s about common sense. Thankfully I have never had any trouble till now. But unless I know lots of people at a party I never go alone - it’s with my husband or a friend or in a group. I always have a driver to be driven back at night and I never drink and drive.

VESNA JACOB

and when I’m in the tropical mood, Malibu is my drink as I like coconuts. Lately my new favourite is definitely ‘Jaegermeister’. Favourite party clothes? Mostly a dark hued shirt or tee, black or wine with dark denims, a great belt and shoes drenched in fresh yet woody cologne with spicy notes like that of Chanel. Has the 1am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? Not really, I would anyway rather go out for a great meal and drinks with my loved ones than really go to someplace loud and shrill. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security? When it comes to security we all need to protect ourselves and others. There has to be a sense of unity with dignity amongst our community and country as a whole and being educated about this is of utmost importance.

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? Delhi is rocking with an array of decent pubs and restaurants being opened in and around the city. There are lot more options now as compared to couple of years ago. What makes for a perfect night out? It is a perfect blend of ambience, good food, great music and the right company. It could either be just a quiet dinner with family to my chosen restaurant or with a bunch of friends to a club. How often do you party in a week? Once in a week depending upon my work schedule. As the work keeps me busy, I don’t find much time to party, but if it’s a good event, I try to at least go for a short while. Where do you like to party in Delhi? My favourite area is Mehrauli as there are really good places to party. The place is not over crowded and the ambience is perfect. Hauz Khas village is my an other favourite hang-out. Preferred cocktail/drink? I am a teetotaller, so I stick to a chilled glass of Thumbs up or Virgin Mojito. Favourite party clothes? For a glamorous evening, I opt for a bright colour cotton waist coat with denims and for a formal evening, I go in for a one button suit. My favourite party attire is denim and T-shirt. Has the 1 am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? Not really, as most of the time I am back by then. As my day starts early, I prefer to

PAWAN SACHDEVA come back in time. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures you take to ensure security? Delhi is no more a safe place to party late at night. With so many incidents happening, one has to take necessary precautions to be safe while partying. I am very par ticular about the place I am going to party, the area, surroundings, crowd, etc. And normally, I don’t stay back too late until and unless I am really having a good time.

C

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? It has changed a lot, earlier we used to leave for the party around 12 at night but now we have to make efforts in the company of close friends to leave early for the party. I think that Mumbai is gearing up more as the place to party in comparison to Delhi. W hat ma ke s for a perfect night out? For me a perfect night out would be when I am and at a classy place with decent crowd. I like places where everything is well organised and is not very crowded. If my loved ones are with me, then it definitely makes for a perfect night. How often do you party in a week? Definitely 2-3 times a week, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are generally the days I am out. Where do you like to party in Delhi? It totally depends on my mood. If I am in a mood for a Bollywood night then I would prefer going to Buzz, whereas for Wednesdays I generally prefer listening to Sufi, so Shalom is the perfect place for that. For Saturday nights I like going to Buddha Bar or Lap. Preferred cocktail/drink? I don’t like a lot of cocktails as it gives me a hangover and affects my health. I prefer having Apple Martini and I am more of a Whisky drinker. Favourite party clothes? A perfect party dress for me would be a short and sexy dress with nice cuts and perfect fitting. Along with it, I wear light make up and do up my hair. Has the 1am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? It has totally affected the fun. Now we have to plan where to go after the club is closed as no one is in a mood to go back home so early. So, either we go out to a five star or any one’s house to continue the party. But it just spoils the total mood. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security? It is not at all safe for a single women to travel alone at night in Delhi these days. I would suggest every girl to go along with trusted company and prefer not to use public transport. I am generally either with my close buddies and my husband when I party out, so I feel totally safe.

Anything that is blingy, a black or a neon dress would do as its really in right now. Has the 1am deadline for places to

close affected your plans and how? Yes it has. We get very less time to party and perform as Delhi crowd gets in very late. They need to start partying early evening to make the most of it. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security? Delhi is not safe at all. One needs to have a guy as company. While returning from any party we never stop on our way as lot of cases has recently happened around Delhi and Gurgaon. One has to be careful about their own security.

Since I never partied till late, I am pretty much alright with the altered timings. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security. I would never party the way I used to 8-9 years ago because of the growing crime rate in the capital. Earlier it was more carefree. Now I have my husband wherever I go. Also I always have driver to drive us back home. I never party solo.

C

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? Party scene in Delhi is full of brands and glamour. What makes for a perfect night out? I guess for me it would be great company and cosy atmosphere. How often do you party in a week? Because of the time constraints, I party generally on Saturdays. Where do you like to party in Delhi? I like to party at Buzz, but if it’s not it I love to party at b-bar and Olive. Preferred cocktail/drink? Has the 1 am deadline for places to close affected your plans and how? Seeing the atmosphere in Delhi which has become highly unsafe, I think closing down of pubs at 1 am is really a good thing. How safe do you feel it is to party at night? What measures do you take to ensure security? Now after so many mishaps, Delhi is no more a safe place to party. When you party, you should never accept a drink from anyone. I never do that and I have my husband with me in parties which makes me feel absolutely safe.

C

an you describe the party scene in Delhi? Delhi party scene is a mix of cosmopolitan culture, high on fashion hang outs and flowing food and drinks. Getting dressed in good clothes and to have good food with good drinks in a good ambience makes my night out perfect. How often do you party in a week? I party at least once in week with my friends, and socially I have to go out for about 2-3 events in a week. Where do you like to party in Delhi? Q&A WITH SHAHNAZ HUSAIN by NEETA LAL

Shahnaz Husain, pioneer and leader of organic beauty care based on Ayurveda, has received global acclaim for taking India’s herbal heritage worldwide with a crusader’s zeal. Today, as Chairperson and Managing Director of the Shahnaz Husain Group of Companies, she heads the largest organisation of its kind in the world with a global network of franchise salons, shops, spas, beauty training academies, and 375 formulations for beauty and health care. The Shahnaz Husain franchise is at the core of the success of the Shahnaz Husain brand. Shahnaz Husain Signature Salons have become internationally known for path-breaking treatments and innovations. care have taken international markets by storm. The future plans of the Shahnaz Husain Group include concentrated international branding, strengthening and widening the global chain of franchise ventures and appointing distributors in unrepresented new markets. Says Shahnaz, “We are expanding our footprints across the globe. We will be taking Ayurveda and Brand India to more countries within the next year.” The entrepreneur has been invited to speak at the Harvard Business School and has also lectured at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics. In April, this year, she lectured to students at MIT on woman empowerment and innovative entrepreneurship. She also represented India at President Obama’s summit for entrepreneurs in Washington DC, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in her field.

delhientrepreneur The pioneer’s contribution to woman empowerment and vocational beauty training is outstanding. She pioneered the concept of residence-cum-salons through a unique franchise system and started professional beauty training academies at a time when only apprenticeship training was available. She is also committed to social causes through her free beauty training courses for physically challenged girls. Shahnaz Husain has received a raft of prestigious international awards. including the “Outstanding Ayurvedic Innovation Award” in the British Parliament and the World’s Greatest Woman Entrepreneur Award from Success, the New York- based business magazine. She was also honoured with the Padma Shri Award. Here, she talks about her favourite city: New Delhi

Yeh Hai Delhi Meri Jaan / What I like about this city I love Delhi. This is where I realized the magic of my dreams. Delhi is a wonderful blend of the old and the new. One can get a feel of our history and culture on the one hand and yet get a taste of the most modern, with its luxurious five-star hotels, posh shopping centres, large industrial houses, the latest designer wear. You can taste the best of national and international cuisine and there is infinite variety. Delhi is a happening city and so cosmopolitan. Another thing which I love about Delhi is that it has a sense of history. I not only feel that I am close to the history and heritage of India, but also to its future. Here, I feel close to history in the making. In Delhi, with its beautiful monuments and forts, you can never be far away from history. I think it has some of the most imposing architecture in the world. I particularly love the stretch of Rajpath, from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan. It is so spectacular, grand and imposing, that it fills me with pride. Delhi is still growing and developing. I think it has a great future, because it is linked with the future of our country.

Uff yeh Delhi / What I don’t like

JUNE 2013|CityScan|13

delhientrepreneur Apart from acquiring the character of a most modern city, Delhi has also acquired some problems. The city was not really prepared for the sudden population explosion and many problems have stemmed from it, like pollution and chaotic traffic. I think Delhi also needs civic sense and people should be more aware of the fact that they owe it to the city and to themselves to follow traffic rules and keep the city clean.

Favourite Eateries in Delhi Starbucks

Special hotspots in Delhi which I enjoy visiting

With artist MF Hussain

Select CITYWALK, Saket. I visit it daily for a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Delhi’s famed culture Delhi has a rich tradition of diverse culture, which is actually linked to its history. The culture is also linked to its food. One gets a feel of it in Old Delhi – in Chandni Chowk, as you walk down the lanes selling the famous street food of Delhi. You get a feel of history too, as you look upon the Red Fort and the house of Mirza Ghalib. There is so much diversity in Delhi’s culture, with famous temples and mosques, including the modern Bahai temple.

How Delhi has contributed to my success Delhi is where I started my career and realised the magic of my dreams. Today, Delhi is where my home is. I travel all over the world, but when I come back to Delhi, I feel I’ve come home. I started my first herbal salon in a small way on the verandah of my home in Greater Kailash, in Delhi. From here, I set out on this journey of discovering and spreading India’s herbal heritage. Delhi is also the city where I achieved success and recognition. The people of Delhi contributed to my success, when I pioneered the herbal beauty movement. Like the citizens of any growing city, they had an open mind to my new “herbal care and cure” concept of beauty and were willing to accept it. I was able to establish people’s faith and trust in the Shahnaz Husain brand name.

With actor Shahrukh Khan

My mantra for success The desire to excel, relentless determination to succeed and the ability to work hard are necessary ingredients for success. I believe one should never give up. If you never give up trying, you cannot fail. One should be willing to try every avenue towards success. You may start in a small way, but you have to think “big.” You have to think that nothing is beyond you. I adopted the franchise system to extend my herbal salons and later, all my other ventures into a worldwide chain. I never rest on my laurels. I always feel I have another frontier to cross, another mountain to climb. If I am going ahead in life and I find a wall, I don’t turn back. I create another door and walk through. In fact, in seizing opportunities and looking forward to challenges lies the secret of success. I believe you can be 14|CityScan|JUNE 2013

what you will yourself to be.

A typical day in the life of Shahnaz Husain I always wish there were more than 24 hours to a day! As I am involved in each and every aspect of my enterprise, I have an extremely busy schedule everyday. In fact, while I am getting ready, I start jotting down the things which occur to me. Fortunately, I have the ability to deal with several different matters simultaneously, giving different instructions to different people. I am very particular about personal obligations, sending gifts, flowers or cards to various people. My day includes discussions with different departments, from production, international expansion, public relations, to packaging and promotions. There are often foreign buyers to meet, or media interviews. I also keep some time aside for answering mail and important letters. Very often, I have to attend various functions, like felicitations, award ceremonies or some important occasion. A thousand ideas and thoughts still crowd my mind when my day ends.

How I unwind I love going for coffee to Starbucks or Barista. An excellent de-stress

formula is just Decafe Starbuck Frappacino Lite Coffee accompanied with a hot Blueberry Muffin – the combination is just out of this world! In fact, I think it is the best in the world. I also love going to Barista. Sipping coffee, with almond muffins in the Barista ambience is fine for me. Listening to music, the soft melodies of ghazals, in subdued lighting, is also something I love doing. I also love to paint, expressing my thoughts and feelings with a riot of colours. Painting and poetry are ways by which I can translate my emotions and creativity. For others, a good life may be living for a hundred years, but I live a lifetime between the rising and setting of the sun.

Delhi’s celebrity culture Page 3 culture has grown over the last few years alongside changes in business promotion. Today, film stars, designers or artists want to promote their films, work or art. It is good to the extent that people come to know of events, but it would have more value if celebrity culture is related to making a difference to society in some way. They could support a cause and thus promotions would serve to also draw attention to the causes and have much more meaning. u JUNE 2013|CityScan|15

coverstory It is that time of the year when people plan for vacations and entertainment outside the city with family and friends. If you are not holidaying the usual way during this summer break and are a grown up who hasn’t stopped dancing yet, it’s the best chance to head out in the city afterhours with a vengeance. While you’ve bid a sweet goodbye to the barbeques and grills and welcome the fruit mixes and chilled beers, take a quick look at the celebration that happens in Delhi after the sun sets. The party scene in Delhi has been shaping up beautifully with the coming in of a host of nightclubs and late-night eateries. While clubbing is a regular part of the metropolitan culture, our capital is one of the most exciting places when it comes to exploring fun. Needless to say, a lot of celebrities fly down to be a part of the city’s nightlife. It’s not a weekend affair anymore. Head out to a party hot spot after 10 at night and you would find mixed groups dining out, drinking and dancing till the wee hours of the morning. A spread of wonderful cuisines, assortment of domestic and international drinks to pick from, bands and DJ’s from overseas, discounts and offers on special nights, dramatic lighting, classy décor and lots more…celebrations out here are vibrant and buzzing with activity. CityScan, while scripting the idea of “nightlife” as a cover story, followed the likes of city dwellers who party NO MATTER WHAT, got to know places they go to, learnt how to make those tempting drinks, a bartender’s glance on late night and chatted with a few of those who you see on the Page 3 columns regularly. So before you put your party dress and dancing shoes on, assess the celebration chart and the fun matter we bring to you and choose the way you’d like to rejoice the time of your life.

KEYA Lounge+Bar+Dining+Dancing This slickly designed outlet has a huge island bar that sits right at the centre like a glow worm. The split level doesn’t really divide the crowd from the DJ. The lovely outdoor section is warm, bohemian, cosy and gets packed quite fast. And there’s good energy from the chic crowd. The clean space has colours that are dark grey, black and orange, and the logo – a flower, has been etched on the walls. The idea was basically to create a bar where one could catch up over a quick drink and great food, listening to lounge music on weekdays. On weekends, commercial music is played by the in-house DJ. The menu offers a Lebanese Platter, Skewers, Thai Inspired Boreks, Pepperoni Focaccias, Non Veg Kebab Platter, Homemade Hamburger and Pan Fried Noodles. Keya makes absolutely splendid Sangrias and Cucumber Spa shot! Attracting a well-heeled crowd, it feels like a cool neighbourhood bar during the weekdays, although you would want to dress up for the weekends. There are no special nights per se in Keya, for they believe in letting their guests become familiar with the place and its ambience. 18|CityScan|JUNE 2013

CIRO’S POMODORO Lounge+Bar+Dining+Dancing It originated in London, next to Harrods. Ciro Orsini, the brand owner evolved the concept in 1978, and his outlets have ever since been frequented by the who’s who of the world. The concept of an ‘Italian restaurant with club energy’ caught on, and finally came to Delhi with much fanfare. The ambience of the place, spread over two floors, is warm, receptive and friendly with bright colours signifying the ‘pomodoro’ meaning tomato. The design was planned in the UK to keep it simple, straight lined with an emphasis on giving character to the place. The two in-house DJ’s play retro, classics, commercial and house, along with live bands playing on Wednesdays and Fridays. They make their food with much love, just like Italians do. Garlic Mushrooms is said to be a signature starter all over the globe in all Ciro’s outlets. Prawns in Tomato Sauce, and Ba sa Fish ba ke d w i t h he rb s a nd spices served with a mild tangy creamy sauce are the other side options that can be had along with drinks. Their newest addition – the Beer Margarita, is getting famous. It is a combination

of beer and margarita, served in a flashy way with the beer pint upside down in the glass. An upmarket crowd in the age group of 22-50 consists of party newbies as well as mature fun makers. The place looks equally promising during the day time, when they have a special Ladies Lunch menu that attracts a lot of women’s groups. Note that weekends are the best time to go to this otherwise sober place. SCOOTER Bar+Dancing The men behind this one of its kind, high-end night club and live performance venue took inspiration from the world’s subversive contemporary cultures such as Punk-Goth and Heavy Metal with echoes of Asian street culture as well as Retro, Neo-Victorian, and Vintage Classical from the historic 80s. An iridescent ultra-violet glow of hot pink harmonises the seemingly varied cultural milieus into an exceptional and distinctive conceptual space. The state of the art audio visual concepts include projection mapping, a 24 foot performance stage and a 40 foot bar. This dark 5000 sq. ft. club space is

divided into two floors, the ground floor acting as the performance zone and the dance floor, and the mezzanine visualised as the VIP zone with an extended bar and a balcony view of the performance space. It celebrates retrograde themes such as “The Empire Rides Back”, “The Return of The King”, and “Sign of the Times”, as literary puns and socio-visual commentary on the postcolonial aesthetic and new age nihilism at the same time, creating a conceptual antithesis. The carved classical Victorian furniture combined with modern graphics creates a contemporary installation and fusion space that is visually dynamic and

conceptually rich. Scooter opened during November last year, and has since then attracted cricketers like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Kevin Pieterson, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Smith and actors Arshad Warsi, Sonam Kapoor, besides other known faces. Fridays and Saturdays are the most happening nights here when they play a mix of all genres of music, including Bollywood. They will soon be starting Live Thursdays, with performances by popular artists. Late Night Things ONLY BARTENDERS KNOW Bartenders are the custodians of the night. While the party crowd is high and rolling, these are the men and women who ensure that the lone guest gets company, who joke when you need some humour, and even listen to your personal stories when you need to vent out. They deal with drunks, have a 101 ways to greet each customer, show some crazy tricks while making your drinks and deal with ‘last call fiascos’ each day. We met with Ashwani, a quirky and chatty bartender at b-bar in Select CITYWALK, Saket, who showed us the view from the other side of the bar. After listening to him, we suggest everyone should do bartending for a few nights in their lives!

22|CityScan|JUNE 2013

æ How did you choose bartending as a profession? I did a course in Hotel Management from the Ashok Institute of Hospitality Management that comes under ITDC (India Tourism Development Corporation Limited) . Subsequently, I worked for all hospitality departments like housekeeping, front office etc. After being trained in various five star hotels, I worked in the service departments, did outdoor catering for the bar, and my interest in bartending cultivated from there. æ How many years has it been, and how has the experience been so far? Two and a half years in bartending, and I’ve had the best time of my life. I was sent to England by my college, and there I started bartending in a very professional way. Back in India, I started bar work at Kitty Su, Lalit Hotel, Delhi. From there, I took up b-bar as my next adventurous employment position.

æ A bartender has many roles to play. What is your role: æ as a friend? If I notice a stag entry, whether a girl or a boy, I take it upon myself to interact with them and make them happy. Singles should not get bored. We even exchange phone numbers sometimes to help a regular guest make reservations or get to know about any special night at the bar with ease. æ as an analyst? Bartenders are like the speaking trees of nightlife. We don’t make comments, but know a lot of things. The party scene is always interesting and it’s fun to see the activity around; but our main work is to remain focused. æ as an entertainer? We crack jokes when you want us to, pass on a smile if you’re grumpy, play cards and show some flaring tricks when the night is high.

coverstory æ as an authority figure? There is a clear hierarchy at the bar. The manager, the sommelier and then the bartender... We never serve drinks like crazy. One may not notice, but we do keep a tab. The bartender notices you and slows down the service or even denies further drinks. Sometimes the guests shout at us to serve more drinks. At such times, we do serve but the drink might be diluted. æ We know for certain that bartenders are professional flirts. Your comments. I’m not sure if that’s true. Interaction is a big part of the bartender’s work. We have to wear different hats all the time. Taking an interest in every guest is vital. æ The music you love at the bar... DJ Raven created the old Buddha Bar music. His music is amazing and I love his mixes. æ Drinks you love to make... I love to make Mimarse (it’s a Spanish word) – a tequila based cocktail with passion fruit, egg white, cardamom bitter and vanilla syrup. æ Tell us some crazy experiences you’ve had in your career. There are innumerable. To start with, there was once a pair of women who confidently ordered for two martinis. I casually placed two glasses with crushed ice and poured in soda to chill. As I was in the process, I saw the glasses absent from the bar. The women were apparently so drunk that they were consuming just the soda, thinking it to be the actual drink. I went over to the corner where the ladies were sitting and asked them how the drinks were. Very excitedly, they said, “They’re good.” I replied saying, “Ma’am that is just soda, you may come over for the real drinks on the counter!” Many people go crazy during the course of the night and ask for flaming shots to be poured directly into their mouths. On one such night, a gentleman became so impatient for a shot that he went on requesting it assertively and came so near to the glass that his face and hair burnt. We had to immediately give him ice and later on some medication! In UK, Leeds, I used to work at a place called The Red Hot World Buffet and Bar. During one of those nights, the bar was

coming to a close and the guests, as usual, were coming for more drinks. When I became absolutely strict about not serving even a single drink more , a fanatical woman opened her shirt and asked, “Even now you won’t make an extra drink?” ...and I thought to myself – “Bartending is a fine job, after all!” There was another incident at Kitty Su, where while making a jagerbomb(a shooter), the shaker slipped out my hands and I messed up the white fur coat of a lady standing right next to the bar. Thankfully, she forgave me. æ The most usual pick up line you get to hear in the bar? “Can I buy you a drink? ” æ What is the difference between nightlife trends in Delhi vs. other metropolitan cities and abroad? There is a very clear difference. There is a hell lot of showing off in Delhi. For example, if one buys champagne or there’s a bit of a fire show for a group, other groups will come up quickly to ask for the same. The line most used by Delhi party goers is, “I had the drink but someone else took it in my absence!” Also, when it comes to comparing party cultures here and in western countries, Indian women are still shy and believe in guys making the first move. æ The most important thing you’ve learnt from your job... Patience and how to handle a difficult crowd. æ Be honest...are we ever your friends or only customers? While working at a bar, I apply both my heart and mind towards my guests. But I am not here to give alcohol for free. æ Things people confide in a bartender? People can share anything and everything. Lots of people share their life experiences with us. A bartender knows when the guest is sad. Family matters, love matters, break ups and patch ups have been disclosed to us. There was recently this girl who kept talking to us till 3:30-4 in the morning about the old good days with her ex. Many times, when I ask people how they are, they tell me about their relationship status. My next question then is, “With whom? The girl you got last or the present one?”

Ashwani has played basketball at the national level and got interested in bartending while being trained in hospitality at the U.K. He gyms every day. Ironically, though he is a Jat from Sonepat and is not aggressive at all (essential for a bartender). The most interesting fact about him is that he doesn’t ever consume hard drinks! At most he tastes them to ensure the flavours of the drinks he creates.

æ How do you hold on to people for longer at the bar? Interact well and make the guests feel comfortable. Giving the drink and standing there like a statue doesn’t help. Then again, we make the drinks as per the guests’ choice. We also play card games or cocktail shaker games that actually deceive you. æ As a customer, what are bar behaviour do’s and don’ts…. • Have patience. Don’t shout at the bartender. Don’t abuse. I’ve been abused many times… when drinks get delayed, stay content. • The person should know what he’s drinking. Have knowledge of your drink and if you don’t, take assistance. • Don’t come to a bar just to pick up company. æ How do you react to abuses? I take it nonchalantly and say, “Thank you very much”. u JUNE 2013|CityScan|23

THE ART OF MAKING COCKTAILS

While the alcoholic staple of most drinkers continues to be a reliable whiskey on the rocks, a chilled beer, or at the very maximum a vodka with a fizzy mixer, cocktails have caught up with the tastes of those who like creativity in their drinks. And when it comes to making one, it’s all about the right proportions. Below are some classic cocktail recipes to get the ball rolling…

FLAMING LAMBORGHINI • 30ml Kahlua coffee liqueur • 30ml Sambuca • 30ml Blue Curacao liqueur • 30ml Bailey’s Irish cream

Pour the Sambuca and Kahlua into a cocktail glass. Pour the Baileys and Blue Curacao into two separate shot glasses at either side of the cocktail glass. Set light the concoction in the cocktail glass and start drinking with the help of a straw. As the bottom of the glass is reached, put out the fire by pouring the Baileys and Blue Curacao into the cocktail glass. As told by CAFÉ MORISSON

How to Season Your Outings

H

eavy partying, growing menus and flowing a lcohol does ra ise concerns about your health and eating right. Seduced by delicious food and tempting cocktails late at night or wee hours of morning, one must pay attention to eating sensibly and detoxing appropriately. Here we share with you a few tips that can protect you from the ills of dining & wining and keep you partying for longer the healthy way. Ü Eat less: Usually, celebration food is higher on calories, fat, salt and sugar. Keep tight control on portions, as it is easy to tip over on calories more so when the variety seems endless. Ü Appetizers: Don’t go out to dine or reach a party ravenous. Make sure you take a light snack before leaving your home to prevent over-indulgence of the

first thing that you are served. Or else, eat most of your meal at home and choose light snacks or vegetables while you are out. Ü  At a restaurant, start your meal with appetizers like clear soups or salads without rich dressings. Pass the breadbasket and order a salad/grilled vegetables. Ü Snack Smart: Go for roasted or baked non – fried, grilled or barbequed snacks. Choose small portions preferably. If overindulged in snacks, keep the dinner light or skip it all together. Ü  Limit alcoholic beverages: Avoid drinking more than 2 medium drinks of wine or other alcoholic beverages. Alcohol stimulates the appetite and is primarily a source of empty calories as these calories are stored preferentially as fats. Women should limit their intake to 1

medium drink. Prefer dry wine instead of sweetened wines. Diabetics should watch out for alcohol intake as it can lead to hypoglycemia. Ü  Other beverages: Save yourself from sugar calories and avoid drinking sweetened beverages. Go in for sugar free substitutes, diet sodas or fruit juices diluted with soda. Ü  Salads: Include salads as a part of the main course. Ask for a wedge of lemon or some seasoned vinegar instead of very oily ones. Ask for the salad dressings “on the

side”. Ü Vegetables: One must look for vegetables with less gravy or without gravy as gravies are loaded with fats and calories. Try grilled, stir-fried or lightly sautéed vegetables. Avoid fried and oily dishes. Ü  If non- vegetarian, choose baked/roasted/grilled fish/ poultry to mutton/beef/pork. Prefer lean cuts of meat. Ü  Desserts: Skip desserts if possible, or choose light ones in place of ones with cream or deep fried ones. If temptation overtakes you or you have a sweet tooth, share your favorite ones with your friends. Fruits make a good choice. Ü Balance your choices: If you have over eaten in a particular meal, then eat light in the subsequent meal/meals or walk that extra mile. Celebration and dining out can be a pleasant way to spend time with friends and family. With a little effort, eating out need not burden you with extra calories and can be a joyful experience. u

BIKINI SAREE

Tips Bikini Sarees can work with any of the body types and is perfect for beach vacations/weddings. Women with heavy Bust Lines: Halter styles are good for support and help women with heavy busts feel comfortable. Halter style bikinis or maillots and one shoulder maillots or bikinis are most appropriate for a heavy bust. Flat busted women: Choose necklines that help accentuate the bust, halter bandeaus, and triangular bikinis work the best as they provide an illusion of a heavy bust.

APPLE SHAPED (BODIES WITH HEAVIER TORSO): One shoulder maillots, Halter maillots with medium necklines, preferably with diagonal style lines and contrasting colours.

BANANA SHAPED (RECTANGULAR FRAMES WITH MORE OR LESS EQUAL BUST, WAIST AND HIPS): Tankinis, bikinis and trikinis

HOUR GLASS FIGURE (BODIES WITH EQUALLY HEAVY BUST AND BOTTOMS WITH A NARROW WAIST) : Any silhouette works for them

Alluring Mamba Decanter to make your dad feel special Mamba Wine Decanter by Riedel – the wine glass company has launched the alluring‚ ‘Mamba’ where the wine flows through every bend it is double-decanted ‚‘opening up‘ upon entering the decanter, achieving what would take hours of decanting in a typical bowlshaped carafe. Mirroring the snake’s poised upright stance, the Mamba’s coiled base creates a series of air pockets which ‘charge’ the wine as it moves towards the elegant upright neck upon pouring. FASHIONABLE SUMMER T by CAROL SINGH

M

ae West once proclaimed, “look your b e s t , who said love is blind? ” And I cant help but constantly remind myself that, every time I walk into that sultry summer night. The June air is abundant with romance, yet your ennui only leads you to the first jersey item in your closet. Sheer injustice you might call it but at other times, when you chose something fussier in the name of “nocturnal glamour”, the night turns out just like you, a hot mess. So where’s the balance? How can one dress sexy in the setting summer sun, and still throw caution to the warm, wailing wind? It’s tricky but not entirely troublesome, if only you embrace your relaxed summer mood and consider a more detached dress code than you would normally go for. Leave behind the knowledge of trends taught in months past, this season has a style sheet all its own. Banish the bravado of tight bandage dresses, and exile yourself to a land of loose lying luxury. Bohemian, country, free-spirited, hippie, all rolled into one. hole-y macrame, and Rajasthani royals in their leheriya, badhini, and chiffon. However, the key is to inject the languid look with a hit of urbane something, so its as ready for the city as it would for the seaside. Be it jungle prints much like Roberto Cavalli’s generous offerings, or Asian inspired florals on caftan/kimono’s ala Etro, or Aztec patterned, tassel tales at Pia Pauro, they all are charming choices for after-dark dressing. A desirable departure from the usual party dress-code of a spangling of sequins and body-con silhouettes. There is a whole other world out there- one filled with opulent prints, so feisty and feverish they would put your most festooned frock to shame. Add into the mix, a knee-high gladiator sandal – the contrast between a flouncy dress and hardy footwear is one that will turn heads and swivel eyes. For a more posh do, you can set off the print with some sparkle-bejeweled stilettos, blingy bijoux, or a metallic deco clutch, all in vein of the frenzied Jazz era and a return to grandeur with The Great Gatsby. Prints are by far the easiest thing to slip into and yet they are arresting enough to make heavy embellishments take a backseat. So pick from a plethora of options on offer, country florals at Bottega Veneta, geometrics served up at

Black is one of those eternally versatile elements you can’t escape, after all its no secret that it makes you look infinitely slimmer and presents the perfect canvas for accessorizing. Such a staple shouldn’t be shunned regardless of place and time. However, caution must be practiced, the usual synthetic fibres and suiting fabrics are a strict no-no for our weather. You must look towards breezy cottons, or light silks, intermingling with broderie anglais, lace, or crochet. Think of all that sexy, Sicilian imagery that Dolce & Gabbana have so fondly created over the years, the noir lace dresses, some in fifties style flares, others curve-clinging, with gobs of gold jewellery and the highest of heels. Closer home, take cue from the banjara women, who clothe themselves in flowy black ensembles, with copious amounts of silver jewellery, mulberry pouts, and kohl-rimmed eyes. Lastly, do not overlook the appeal of a see through textile, rendered only too well at Emilio Pucci this season-translucent cut-out detailing, or sheer black overlays with slinky slips underneath. As long as you make sure the layering is light and numbered, this is your shortcut to sensuality on any given night. Add on some becoming baubles-chokers are all the rage for a few seasons now, as are tribal off shoots such as ear cuffs, and haath-phools. Or else you can simply rely on the good ol’ oversized cuff and cocktail ring, and you have all the armour you need to conquer the dark knight. a perilous plunge from time to time. I have always been a big fan of exposed mid-riffs, after all I’m a nineties girl! So when the runways exploded with bellies being paraded I felt as overjoyed as a kid in a candy store. I counted all the different flavours on display – the bralet (short and snug with thick spaghetti straps), the cropped tee (supersized slashed-off versions, or tight tank top options), and the shorn-off shirts (all kinds of blouses that are hemmed or knotted just above the belly button). And then I went and bought myself one of each style. Now when I have a bloated belly day I have very little to fall back on, so instead I just opt for higher waistlines to salvage the day. It works. Italian brand Canali has been creating the finest in men’s fashion for more than 75 years now. But for this internationally renowned producer of high-quality men’s suits and other wardrobe necessities, designing fine men clothing is still a family affair. Even after three generations, the Canali kin remains dedicated to creating exquisite Italian menswear and accessories. CityScan talks to a key member of the family – Ms Elisabetta Canali, Global Communications Director, who gives us her take on true Italian fashion.

CANALI AND THE INDIAN MAN

Talking with Elisabetta Canali 58|CityScan|JUNE 2013

Elisabetta Canali introduces the latest SS collection and the inspiration behind it

æ What defines luxury in clothing for men? In clothing for men, luxury refers to a mix of ingredients: the highest quality, exclusive fabrics, fine tailoring and well skilled craftsmen. The word luxurious should apply not only to the clothing but also the service offered to clients. Men are very selective, they want to be pampered but in a distinctive and exclusive way. That is why we offer a VIP Room in our boutiques reserved for private shopping and our ‘Made to Measure’ service. Luxury is buying a quality tailored suit in settings permeated by Italian savoir faire.

æ In what does Canali, the brand, specialise? Canali, through its tailoring tradition, is specialised in high quality tailored suits. Our suits are a harmonious whole of small and big details in perfect balance, sewn by expert hands which (thanks to their skill) create a masterpiece every time. Canali suits are characterised by perfect wearability as well as sophisticated elements, and offer extraordinary comfort .To achieve the objective of creating ‘suits in which every man can be at ease’, we have always focused our attention on the ‘Made in Italy’ factor. All of Canali’s finest fabrics and all materials used

“Our Spring Summer collection is suffused by the atmosphere of freedom and lightness, typical of long palm lined boulevards set against immense crystalclear skies, sunsets tinged by tropical colours, the open-air life and poolside cocktails. It is a collection that mixes genres and styles, tailored and casual, to produce the sensation of an eternal holiday, good humor and a positive approach to life. Stylish tailoring and leisure lifestyles breathe life into fresh, young combinations. The outfits express different shades of elegance, depending on whether they are worn with a tie or a Cachecol accessory. The evergreen blazer is an absolute must, a jacket that is perfect for cocktails in town or at pool-side parties. Lengths are shorter, fits slimmer and jackets unstructured and unlined to satisfy the need for freedom.”

brandlogic for a suit’s inner linings and buttons are made in Italy by highly skilled Italian craftsmen well versed in the traditions of fine tailoring. æ Did you change your design aesthetics for the Indian man? The Indian market has an unbelievable passion for clothes and style. We feel so close to the Indian concept of elegance and to its sophisticated styles full of sumptuous and colourful dresses and fabrics that it even inspired our formal SS collection. Still, we usually don’t create specific lines for each country. But

brandlogic drawing on our heritage of fine tailoring, we have from the outset preferred to design and develop fits and models that take account of the different styles and physical characteristics of clients throughout the world. æ What do you think has been the reason for your continuing success across the globe, especially in India? Fine tailoring, Italian couture, cloth selected only from the best mills, and professionalism are the keys to our success across the globe. Indian men

can find in our contemporary formal suits the same value, tradition, quality and research that they have in their ceremonial clothes. æ Is Canali an occasion brand or a day brand as well? Canali is a day brand with its formal and leisure collection but also has a Ceremony Line for special occasions. Canali’s suits can be worn both by mature men who feel comfortable with traditional styles, as well as by ambitious young managers who want to feel elegant and at ease in separate jacket and trouser combinations, with no tie. We propose a very versatile concept of elegance to satisfy all the different styles and needs of men around the world. æ Canali being a trendsetter in men’s styles, could you give us an insight on style trends in a) shirts b) trousers c) suits and d) men’s accessories? There is a new desire for lightness, freedom and informal elegance with fabrics, blends, styles and colours that are as far from the office suit concept as possible. For once, tailoring is at the service of the easy life. Super light fabrics with sharp lines and fresh, but unusual colours give even our formal suits the freshness of the summer season along with their sophisticated styling. We propose suits with soft and light, longer jackets combined with drainpipe trousers, inspired by the 50’s and 60’s; unlined or semi-lined jackets with rounded peak lapels, constructed but soft shoulders, rounded breast pockets in pure tailor made style, and a contoured cut with fitted waist, presented in both singlebreasted models with peak lapels and six-button double-breasted versions As for the shirts, the classic white or light blue stripes make way for more lively designs: from two-tone Vichy checks to micro floral patterns, combined with tapered trousers that deliver the perfect fit.

The ‘Kei’ Factor Light and friendly travel jacket for Indian men

The name of this garment comes from the letter K, as in knitwear. It neither has structure nor lining but is light and cosy like a sewn on knit garment. It is a jacket which is as versatile as a shirt in summer and acts as a cardigan in its winter version. The characteristics which make a Kei unique are soft elegance combined with aesthetic comfort. To create a Kei, the finest materials are selected. Each piece needs the hands, eyes and heart of a single dedicated specialist tailor with skills forged by years of meticulous work, and no one else. The overall thickness is reduced and shoulder pads eliminated. With their natural lines, the shoulders become point of focus. A Kei is a true artefact, a handmade product of skill, artisan wisdom, attention to detail, and passion.

Accessories dominate the scene becoming distinctive features of real elegance: regimental ties, fantasy scarves, suede belts, and small leather goods styled captivatingly in fine python, tejus lizard and crocodile skin will be the distinctive features of a glamorous lifestyle. u by VARALIKA VIJ JUNE 2013|CityScan|61

ELIZABETH ARDEN’ S SKINCARE RECOMMENDATIONS We speak with Angeline Lim-De Silva, who for past 10 years has been the Regional Training Manager at Elizabeth Arden - Asia Pacific, India and Middle East and get you answers on the basic skincare regime, essentials that should not be overlooked and how to get that coveted glow. æ What are the basic steps to a perfect skin regime that every person should follow? Following a basic skincare regimen benefits your skin’s health and appearance tremendously. An ideal skincare regimen consists of 4 essential steps; Cleansing, Toning, Treating and Moisturizing. Cleanse – to get rid of dust, sweat, makeup, sebum and even impurities in the air. If you don’t cleanse thoroughly, your pores will become clogged and your skin will start looking dull. Tone – removes the last tiny traces of oil, makeup or dirt your cleanser may have missed. It also prepares the skin to receive the benefits of the rest of your regimen. The clean, fresh feeling it leaves you with is worth the extra step Treat - Serums have a high concentration of active ingredients that deliver specific results. Used daily under a moisturizer they can address issues ranging from sun damage, discoloration, uneven skin tone, barrier repair, lines and wrinkles and collagen production. Moisturize – Moisturizers don’t just act as barriers against the environment and dry air, they actually help our skin function and improve water retention in the epidermis by ‘sealing’ it – effectively maintaining a delicate balance of moisture. æ In Delhi, our skin is exposed to a lot of pollution on a daily basis, how can we prevent or limit the damage? Antioxidants are substances that protect the cells in your body. 62|CityScan|JUNE 2013

womenskincare Environmental stressors like UV light, air pollution, cigarette smoke, and even oxygen create damaging by-products – called free radicals – during normal cellular metabolism. Antioxidants scavenge these free radicals and bind to them before they cause damage. By donating an electron to any and all free radicals and binding to them, antioxidants quickly stabilize the free radicals. They stop the destructive cellular chain reaction. The result is effective protection from damage to your skin. Some examples of topical antioxidants that are used today include kinetin, coenzymeQ10, alpha lipoic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, and now Idebenone, the most antioxidant available for topical use and the active ingredient in PREVAGE. æ Apart from eating right, what else does a skin requires? Apart from eating right one must try to sleep well, exercise daily and of course follow the four step skin care regimen. æ One must use skincare product? If I had to say one product that you should start using today and continue always using, it would be a facial sunscreen. The sun causes the majority of the aging signs that everyone tries to avoid. You can get a sun protection combined with your moisturizer or even your makeup. Remember that sunscreens need reapplication during the course of the day. æ What is the right time to start applying antiageing products? With today’s fast moving lifestyle and stress involved one can start using preventive ageing products from their early 20’s. æ One must-have in every woman’s handbag for the perfect quick glow? To keep your face looking bright and glowing all day long one can use a mineral powder foundation, such as Elizabeth Arden’s mineral powder foundation SPF 20 ++. Not only will it brighten and freshen your overall look and complexion, it doubles up as a very effective sunscreen ensuring that you are well protected from the harmful effects of UV rays! æ Any tips that you would like to share for delaying skin ageing and maintaining glow?

Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and help maintain a glow. 3 main tips are: a) Sun protection – ALWAYS! One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems. • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When you’re outdoors, reapply sunscreen every 3 hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring. • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun rays are strongest. b) Treat your skin with care Prevention is ALWAYS better than cure. Delay the signs of ageing at an early stage, the age of prevention is in your early 20’s . It is never too early to start implementing a simple daily skincare regimen of cleansing, toning, treating and moisturize. c) Manage Stress Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and lead to other skin problems. It also increases free radical activity in the skin and body. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. The results might be more dramatic than you expect. u by TEAM CITYSCAN JUNE 2013|CityScan|63

These include Armani/ Dada, Armani/ Casa, Baltus, B&B Italia, Emmemobili, JNL, Molteni & C and Nilson. We have an in house design team. Our principal architect is Zafar Choudhary. He is a consultant and an advisor to us. æ What essentially does your company offer to domestic customers? Basically what we have in the bouquet is a mix of all the best brands in terms of a home’s aesthetics, its layout, furniture and all accessories – anything and everything that makes a house a home. And since we’ve partnered with the best of the best, we can really optimise solutions.

“We have tied up with international and local architects and together with them we want to create the best that there is. We give the team all international support. So we create the best design fraternity to provide the best results.” MEET SAWHNEY

OWNER, MEET SAWHNEY & CO.

æ  Are you the sole entrepreneur? Yes. My parents are into exports. I was the one who branched out and got into construction and interiors. æ How did you get into this? When I passed out of college – Infinity Business School – I joined my dad’s business for some time. But since my dad was already taking good care of that, I felt there was a lot more I could do elsewhere. My creativity wasn’t oriented towards manufacturing processes. I wanted to be more creative in terms of designing. Back then, we had started constructing our house. I became interested in this field while helping out in the setting up of my home. Then, starting at a very preliminary level, I used to take up assignments for small spaces. æ And your business is very big now! Yes and growing every day. We are planning a huge kitchen display in the store. There is a lot more but it’s all under wraps right now. æ How have you been influenced by world architecture? In order to create my store the way you see it and manage other projects, I have been travelling a lot to Europe. As a child, I was

A businessman’s perspective What do you call yourself professionally? I’m a businessman. I’m not a trained architect. My background is business and that is where I stand. For me, design is just a passion and I’m pretty much living it. How involved are you personally in the creative process? Very involved. Everything does come to my table before it goes to the client. I might not be involved through the entire design process, but for the most part, I make sure I take a good look. How aware do you find your customer? They are gradually becoming more and more aware of the process. The process is more important than the product. What’s the fun part of your work? The fun part is when you see the project being completed. You really feel nice once the project stands in front of you spic and span. It’s a driving factor. What would be your advice to a young entrepreneur like you who wants to start the same business? My advice would be as thorough as possible. I’m a very hands on person and that has worked for me.

homeinteriors always exposed extensively to the western world. There are places and buildings there that are a great source of inspiration. They don’t necessarily show in your work instantaneously, but then as I reflected upon them, European art and design affected my work a lot. The art works of Spain and Italy have inspired me the most. æ How did you go about deciding on what brands to pick? Every brand has been handpicked and chosen very carefully and a lot of deep thought has gone into choosing them. Again, I did a lot of travel. Every brand now has its own style and aesthetic sensibilities. Looking at how India is growing in the luxury market, we felt that these would be the best brands to go with the Indian taste palates. Some brand names, I felt, were just right for my company, and the relationship has just got stronger. At this point of time, I feel they might be a little bit ahead of our time, but we are definitely catching up. æ Are these brands available anywhere else? No, we are the only ones dealing with them ( except Armani/ Casa for which we are exclusive dealers only in North India) and we’re the first ones in the country to come up with an actual display which is spread over 25,000 sq ft, where people can come, touch and feel the product, and see what they like. It’s not just catalogues or samples that they have to choose from . We respect the fact that people are making a huge investment in their houses and want to be convinced about what they are going ahead with.

give the team all international support. For example, when it comes to sliding doors, walk in wardrobes, partitions, or kitchens, we give them all the technical support that we can get from the west. They are the ones who need to implement and design everything. So we create the best design fraternity to provide the best results. People today are travelling a great deal and are much more exposed to international trends. So what India was five to seven years back and what it is now is very different, because people know what they want and have formed their opinions already. This scenario is good and is a part of the whole India story maturing. We’re looking forward to a time when each customer has a sensibility of his own.

“Our design sensibilities, aesthetic sense, the brands we’ve tied up with, our professionalism and the way that we can execute these projects seamlessly is what make us different. It is not only about pieces of furniture or interiors, we also come from a background that is into development.”

æ How eager were these brands to discover the Indian market? They have all been very eager. Initially I had speculated that they might not be that interested in coming to India, because it’s a very virgin and nascent market, but it was just astonishing to see how well appreciated India was once we approached them. I am actually selling a concept to the client, not just a piece of furniture, and we’ve been quite professional in our approach. That is why we see so many brands come to us all the time to represent them.

æ Your say on the Delhi market - the highs and the lows… When you compare the Delhi market to the rest of India, I would say that the majority of the business is actually in the Delhi market, and the northern Indian belt. Other metros like Mumbai are major markets too and cannot be ignored. But I would still say that the mount of money that is spent in the Delhi market is more because the spaces here are much bigger…so there is more to do in terms of creativity and design. In Mumbai, for instance, the work is all interior related. The structures in Delhi, on the other hand, are built from the scratch.

æ What were their demands while making it to the Indian market? Exhaustive! Each brand has its own identity which it needs to guard very closely. Our design team has to work very closely with their design teams and come up with a solution. So we can’t just use anything at any place we like. The worldwide brands want our local expertise in the colours and materials that we choose since we know what works best for our market. We need to see what works best globally and domestically.

æ How has your experience with individual home projects been? We’ve done lots of houses so far. The approach is very different because the entire family is involved, where everybody has their own tastes and preferences, and it’s a time consuming process, very subjective and one on one. It’s an experience in itself, because in these projects, you are dealing with your client for at least four months to a year. I appreciate personal interventions and inputs in design while handling such projects.

æ So basically they even know how you’ve displayed a certain creation at your showroom? Definitely. They know each and everything, even about how a single cushion has been placed at our store.

æ How are you offering technology in your homes? Home automation, plumbing and electrical systems and everything related to technological know-how has to be state of art for us. From something as basic as the usage of a lot of LED lights to installing German and Italian pumps or Swiss treatment plants, I take note of advanced machinery in every part of the house. Even the generators are N+1, which means that in one house there would be two generators. Once we reach the maximum load on one, the other gets used, so one is not wasting diesel. For a pool, we have a complete

regeneration system. Hydromatic systems are standard on all our properties. We went a step ahead in hospitality projects and looped all the systems together. So even in the winter, when you open the tap, you would always get warm water, because the circulation system is built into the system. Also, the curtains are automated, the lighting can be controlled…so there are a lot more things that we put into our buildings, its not just bare shelves and walls. æ Do you see competitors in the market? It’s always good to have competition. Only when there is competition, does the market mature and grow. It is inevitable and I welcome it. æ What would you say is your USP and distinguishing factor? Our design sensibilities, aesthetic sense, the brands we’ve tied up with, our professionalism and the way that we can execute these

homeinteriors comes in. These companies invest millions and millions into research and development, and that’s how they come up with a product. For them, quality is the ultimate criteria. There is a Scandinavian look as well – but we are still far from that and will take a few more years to digest that kind of design here. æ Any other interior design companies that have impressed you? There are a few brands that are incorporating Indian designs and also taking inputs from Indian designers. Moroso is one such company that has actually got Indian designers to pitch in and give them their design ideas. æ Are you inspired by Indian designs too? Absolutely. Indian designs are catching up globally now. The Indian jali pattern, I would say is the largest and the most used pattern in Indian architecture and abroad. æ What kind of customers are you attracting? We are more than happy to serve anybody who has taste and is looking for a modern, contemporary look. It’s not that we’re only catering to high end clients, since we are also working with builders. We can also look at other product lines which are very affordable and offer good value for money. projects seamlessly is what makes us different. It is not only about pieces of furniture or interiors, we also come from a background that is into development. The kind of expertise we can give to our clients is much more than they anticipate. Once a client takes us on board, it is our responsibility to visit the sites, do routine check-ups and take care of everything else. æ What are the consumer buying trends in the Indian market currently? Earlier, we used to witness a lot of baroque architecture and classical art being used. People were more into heavily carved and florally embellished furniture. But now you will see that no one renovating a home is actually going for that kind of a look but preferring the modern look instead. One thing which is great about the Indian set up is that people adapt fairly quickly. æ Are European design sensibilities essentially minimalistic? In a European set up too there are many design elements. One is of contemporary luxury with a minimalistic look, for which we are essentially known. Then there is the Californian look, which is again modern, but the furniture pieces are not straightline and minimalistic and a lot of wood is used. Our brands like B&B Italia and Molteni & C are very straightline and modern. You will see things that are very basic but excellent not only in terms of design but also in their techniques and craftsmanship, which is where expertise 68|CityScan|JUNE 2013

æ There is a definite boom in luxury products in Delhi. How has it affected home interiors and design? The boom in home interiors had picked up, but then came a slight slump in the market. It has now gained pace again. We are very optimistic that in the coming 6-8 months, once the political scenario gets sorted out, there should be unprecedented growth. æ What have been the challenges so far? They are primarily related to the Indian market being nascent. For example, if we are talking about kitchen wardrobes, or technical wall compositions, we really need to go into depth and explain the product to the client. The materials take a minimum of three months to come, so all this needs planning in advance, which unfortunately Indians don’t like to do. æ What’s next for you personally, and what’s next for the brand? We are increasing the brands on our list and more and more architects are working with us. Even the team is growing. As far as I’m concerned, I’m looking at Delhi and other markets and at branching out into different businesses. We have a strong hold in Delhi, but we are studying the options of venturing into other towns and metro cities like Mumbai and probably Bangalore. We will have to do the homework for these places from scratch. u by VARALIKA VIJ

The same THAI dish, from 3 leading chefs

The complexity of the Thai cuisine – perceived or actual – can be quite intimidating. CityScan talks to the chefs of established restaurants in Delhi who have made us savor Thai dishes with much love. Shared are the recipes of classic Thai dishes and the techniques, secrets and tips by the finest chefs who make it all worth some finger licking.  How I do it

Chef Gir Bahadur

We use chicken breast slices for this preparation as a repl chicken to keep th acement for diced e dish tender. Also , many people fry the ch icken. I prefer sa utéing it lightly to keep the cooking part to the minimum. Then again, one might go wrong if the masala is m ade before putti ng in the chicken. It’s bette r to sauté the ch icken first and then bl end it with othe r flavours.

How I do it

Chef Sarabjeet Singh

Using chicken breast instead of chicken leg is better for the preparation of this dish. This is because the sauces and the flavours seep into much easily in the breast pieces. I recommend the cooks to keep a good check on time and keep the fire slow while preparing it, since over cooked chicken might get very rubbery.

Thai Basil Chicken (Kai Pad Kaprow)   By Chef Gir Bahadur, Asia Kitchen SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS

• 10 oz boneless and skinless chicken thighs or chicken breast (ground) • 4 cloves garlic (finely chopped) • 2 shallots (finely chopped) • 1 1/4 tablespoons fish sauce • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/2 teaspoon dark soya sauce • 1 big bunch of Thai basil leaves (steams removed) • 6 bird’s eye chilies • 2 dashes ground white pepper 70|CityScan|JUNE 2013

• 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon cooking wine • 2 tablespoons oil

METHOD

Add oil into a heated wok, follow by chopped garlic and shallots. Stir fry the garlic and shallots until aromatic, and then add the chicken meat into the wok. Use the spatula to quickly stir-fry and break the ground chicken meat into small

How I do it lumps. When the chicken meat changes colour, toss in the chilies and the seasonings (fish sauce, sugar, and dark soya sauce) and continue to stir-fry. Add in the basil leaves and do a few quick stirs until the basil leaves are wilted and you can smell the exotic fragrance of the basil leaves. Sprinkle two dashes of pepper powder into the dish, do a final stir, dish out and serve immediately.

Chef Taratip Nooriengsai

While fr ying th e minced chicke n, I use oyster sauce, w hich gives the di sh a wonderfully gr anulated textur e. Since the chicken has a lot of water co ntent naturally, the us e of water while cooking should be minim al. For the one’ s who want to tr y a ha nd at making th is dish, I advice pouring the sauces on th e walls of the pan while cooking (and no t on meat directly) to distribute the fla the vour equally.

After about 5 minutes add tom yum paste and Thai chilli paste. Let the soup simmer on low flame for about 12 to 15 minutes till all the flavours are extracted into the soup. Add salt to taste. Remove the soup from fire and then add lemon juice. Serve the soup hot, garnished with coriander leaf.

I use only the stems and roots of coriander to give this soup a better flavour. You can add fresh red chilies to make the soup spicier. Note that if lemon juice is added while cooking, the soup tends to become bitter. So add lemon only in the end.

ad William Wordsworth been from this century, he might have preferred writing some of his poems at a place like White Waters where the sound of flowing water is accompanied by classical rock and jazz music. Located in the heart of Connaught Place, this restaurant cum lounge promises the most relaxed of food experiences. Besides its ambience, the menu too was interesting, consisting of

extensive options in appetisers, salads, sandwiches, stir fries, dim sums, pastas and soups which made choosing quite a task. Since we prefer cheese, we stirred my taste buds with Cheese Balls and Crispy Chilli Mushroom. We also ordered Dahi ke Kabab and Tandoor Ke Phool consisting of broccoli and cauliflower florets marinated in yoghurt and cooked in a clay oven. These are among their must-try dishes. What catches attention is their extensive drinks section which includes varieties in mocktails, cold coffees, iced teas, shakes, smoothies, hot coffee, tea and quenchers. We ordered for Chocolate and Nut Shake and Water Melon Mint Iced Tea, both of which were uniquely flavoured and quite different from the regular drinks one has at most restaurants. Since the starters were enough and didn’t leave much space to binge further, we asked for a small portion of Pasta in White Sauce. Non-vegetarians must try Chicken Stroganoff with Onion Pilaf and Nasi-Goreng-NV which is Indonesian Fried Rice with eggs and chicken satay. Just like the starters and main course, the dessert section too has a plethora of options like Drunken Chocolate Mousse, Coconut Mousse, Chocolate Blueberry Mascarpone Roulade and many more. We tried the Lebanese dessert filled with dry fruits and butter, Baklava. What made this dessert irresistible was the fact that it is served steaming hot. White Waters is a pleasant change on the Capital’s restaurant scene with its extensive choices and calm atmosphere. WHERE: C 39, First Floor, Connaught Place, New Delhi

onnaught Place, already overflowing with restaurants, bars and lounges has a new and serious entrant, Warehouse Café. Operated and owned by the same team that runs several Delhi restaurants including the popular Out of the Box, Raas from HKV, Skooter and Lazeez Affaire, the restaurant has used the expertise and knowledge gained from running over 20 restaurants in Delhi to create a novel offer of 365 multi-cuisine dishes from amongst those most popular and appreciated across their eateries. 365 dishes can sound intimidating and perhaps overwhelming but it seems to work well with a calendar menu placed on the tables. Each day of the month has a marked dish (at 50% off if you pick the dish of the day) and every month has a different course or cuisine to help simplify your options. A comfortable staircase still smelling of freshly carved wood takes you to the 1st floor entrance (you can also opt to use the elevator). As the name suggests, the décor is that of a dimly-lit warehouse with old world charm. The interior walls are a mix of red brick and wood, you can see open beams, and the furniture is in leather and wood in classic English style. Spaciously planned, the restaurant can serve around 200 people. The mezzanine level is converted into the ideal space for holding a 30-35 people private party. The dark interiors didn’t match with our happy mood that evening, but one look at the guests having ‘all things melted’ got us eager for the course ahead. In our attempt to have the most customary fondue, we asked for Traditional Swiss Chalet. From the moment of the order to the first bite, the process was created

evening with good food, herbal sheeha and a live percussionist. On the first floor, the House music fits well with the mix of people who visit, ranging from youngsters to working professionals to families. We began our evening with Peppercorn Cheese Rolls (think Chinese vegetarian spring rolls with cheese), soft Murg Malai Tikka and Chicken Wings with Hot Sauce. For the main course we tried two cuisines, the continental Warehouse Grilled Chicken served with mashed potatoes, and popular Chinese dishes – Schezwan Chicken and a vegetarian curry. We concluded our pleasant experience with an enjoyable cheesecake and chocolate brownie (we did miss an accompanying sauce or ice cream perhaps). An exciting concept planned for the end of the meal is the roulette table with the possibility of winning free drinks or food! You get chips depending on your final bill (at one chip for every Rs 100, it’s pretty reasonable), and place bets to win freebies that you can redeem on your next visit. The server went on to blend imported gruyere and cheese in dry white wine, with garlic and spices; the concoction was finally served with an assortment of breads, fresh seasonal vegetables, cocktail onions, Granny Smith apples and grapes. Next we had the Entrée with Fondue Style Cooking. spiced cauliflowers, mushrooms stuffed with ricotta cheese and spices, spiced baby corn stuffed herbed potatoes, cheese tortellini, roasted garlic chicken and teriyaki chicken were dipped for a few minutes in a flavourful broth and served with three exotic sauces. All of them were melt-in-the-mouth tasty and the broth truly soothed our throats. For our dose of melted chocolate (how could we leave without that?!) we ordered for the Rocky Road Chocolate Fondue. How critical can one be of a melting pot of dark chocolate, creamy milk chocolate, walnuts and pecans, served with brownie bits, pound cake, chocolate wafer bars and fresh fruits? DELHI

THE NEXT B-TOWN We love Delhi and it seems so does Bollywood! Some very popular and critically appreciated movies have been shot here in recent times, and many more are in production. Delhi is pegged at the centre of several Bollywood movies in 2013 with a total of 30 films expected to be shot in the capital. Seeing familiar everyday places on the big screen is always exciting. And if it happens to be that welltravelled road, a favourite eatery or a personal, much-

loved hang-out, seen anew on 70 mm, they all bring a little cinematic magic into our everyday lives. CityScan finds out exactly what attracts film directors and producers to the capital and why they keep coming back. Often an integral part of the script, the importance of finding the right location means that an enormous amount of time and energy goes into finding the right setting for any movie. “Sholay would not have been

the same if it hadn’t been shot in that particular location. There was nothing there initially, but the rocks and bleak scenery lent themselves so beautifully to the movie,” says the film’s director Ramesh Sippy. In fact, Vinod Pande, another eminent director adds that it is in “marrying frozen moments in a film with picturesque locations that make a memorable movie”. In a place as varied as Delhi, several films

cityliving shot in the same city reveal different facets of the capital and filmmakers use dissimilar locations to bring alive their story and also to prevent scenes from looking repetitive. This is what hits you when you land in Delhi – there is much more to this place than just fly overs and buildings. If you want to bring realism into the movies, you have to find ‘real’ locations because as film producer Rohan Sippy points out, “The greatest adventure of cinema is its ability to give people a cinematic experience and transport them into that experience through visuals. The creative use of locations helps us do that.”

LOVE AAJ KAL and ROCKSTAR (Imtiaz Ali, Director)

Love Aaj Kal is based largely in the UK but a prominent and central part of the film has been shot in Delhi. With Deepika Padukone playing the role of Meera who works as a restorer of old art and monuments, it was only natural that Imtiaz Ali chose to come to the capital which has the largest number of historic landmarks in the country. Shooting took place in the Red Fort, Purana Qila, on the streets of Delhi, and at the railway station in Patiala. The director was then back with Rockstar which is about student life in Delhi University with Ranbir Kapoor playing a student from Hindu College who dreams of becoming a rock star but is laughed at by his friends. Nargis Fakhri perfectly plays the role of a fuccha (fresher) who is young, vibrant, beautiful and a heartthrob among her mates. Their wild sneak-outs, their quest for fun and their passion to live out their whims allows audiences to view and explore interesting parts of

focussed on one of the most treasured and famous areas of the capital --- Chandni Chowk. Unfortunately, the crew had to shift out of there after a few days due to excessive crowds and recreate the setting in Jaipur. Rakeysh Mehra, a Delhite himself, loves Delhi as it is one of the oldest

Delhi. Delhi sights seen include the Hauz Khas Fort, Nizamuddin Dargah, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Connaught Place, Shri Ram College of Commerce, St. Stephen’s College and Hindu College.

DILLI-6, RANG DE BASANTI and BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG (Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Director)

In Rang De Basanti, the lead actors play the role of contemporary patriots and Delhi, so often the centre of major revolutionary moments through its history, was the perfect location for the film. Locations featured include Habitat Centre for the audition scenes, India Gate where the youths hold a protest and Modern School, Barakhamba Road which is portrayed as the All India Radio Station in the climax of the film. cityliving We talk to two eminent film makers from the Indian film industry who have shot in Delhi and who share their reasons for choosing the capital as a locale. For Rajshree Ojha, the director of Aisha, it was the amalgamation of glamour and history which motivated her to shoot in Delhi. However for Vinod Bachchan, the producer of Zila Ghaziabad, it was the success rate of the movies shot in Delhi which brought him here.

Vinod Bachchan Producer-Zila Ghaziabad

Vinod Bacchan’s real reason for choosing Delhi and Ghaziabad as the location for his movie is slightly contrarian. Of course Zila Ghaziabad is set in Delhi/NCR because the plot itself is based on the true story of a gang war that lasted between two groups in the 80s and 90s in Ghaziabad. But he says, “I chose Delhi because it is less crowded – in comparison to Mumbai. In fact while shooting for the song Ranja Jogi at Qutab Minar, we didn’t face any problem concerning the crowd. In fact I found Ghaziabad more crowded than Delhi. I am from north India and have a soft corner for it, so I try to shoot most of my movies here. Also I believe movies shot in Delhi have 99% success rate. My previous movie Tanu weds Manu was also shot in north India (Uttar Pradesh and Punjab). I am planning to shoot my next comedy film London Gopal too in the capital as the theme best suits this place.’’

Rajshree Ojha

Director – Aisha

Rajshree Ojha, inspired by one of Jane Austen’s most celebrated works Emma, has attempted to recreate the popular and widely read classic in an Indian setting in her movie Aisha. In a tete-a-tete with her, she explains why it was Delhi and not any other city when it came to choosing a location for Aisha. “Before starting the movie I was travelling a lot and was looking very keenly at every city as a possible place for the Aisha shoot. Jane Austen was a classic writer rooted in reality and this element needed to come through in the movie. I wanted to select a place which was historically rich but had bling as well. With these as criteria, I could not think of any other city but Delhi. I used to go often to the Gymkhana Club some years back and the crowd never failed to impress me. The ladies were dressed in perfect saris, wearing pearl necklaces and designer wear. This made me realise just how much attention Dillwallas pay to detail and dressing. So you will see Sonam Kapoor who has played Aisha always dressed perfectly. Most of the movie has been shot in Defence Colony keeping in mind its up-market status. Also when I was a kid I used to visit at my uncle’s place which was a huge bungalow. That lane was so beautiful that I couldn’t just let it go and when I thought of showing an element of class in my movie, Delhi automatically came to mind thanks to these memories. I also considered Kolkata but if we included glamour, well I felt no place would be better than Delhi.”

TO U RI SM

Mehra had created a refugee camp that was actually in Purana Qila at the time of partition. Now, Purana Qila is all modernised, but Tughlaqabad is exactly the way it was --- in ruins. He also found a wonderful location in the Cantonment area with the Rajasthan Rifles regiment, and a beautiful railway station from British times near the Sultanpur Bird sanctuary. The unit hunted for locations for almost 16 months for this film, and a lot of the places selected were in and around Delhi. u by ANUPRIYA BISHNOI

authorQ&A

AUTHOR SPEAK

ANUJA CHAUHAN æ You left a very successful career in advertising to become a writer, what motivated you to take this decision? Since when have you aspired to become a writer? I have been writing since I was a child. I took up advertising so that I could write and it was great fun till I got kicked upstairs to a more managerial and less creative role. It was then that I decided to take up writing fiction. æ How do you feel your career in advertising is helping you today? Advertising teaches you to take it on the chin. You face so much criticism that you learn to roll with the punches. It also teaches you not to bore people and to engage, entertain and connect.

We catch up with Anuja Chauhan, author of the recently released and very popular book Those Pricey Thakur Girls. She forayed into the literary world in 2008 with her first book The Zoya Factor after a 17 year career at an advertising firm where she eventually became vice president and executive creative director. Known for her romantic comedy novels, her books are entertaining and full of humour with a sprinkling of reality. 96|CityScan|JUNE 2013

æ How rewarding has your journey been so far? Very! I love what I do. I miss the predictability of a formal job sometimes; the feeling of knowing that an X amount of money will plonk into your account every month. æ You say TPTG is inspired by your own life, any particular incident from your life that you have shared in the book? The wistfully lusty graffiti in the school toilets, chachiji’s jaadu tona nuskas, sleeping on the terrace, getting jeans stitched at Mohan Singh Place and a lot more. æ Why did you choose Delhi as the setting of your book? I grew up in this city and I know it well. I love Delhi and so it was the logical setting. æ Humour is tough to write, What do you feel it takes to make people laugh, especially

while reading a book? The juxtaposition of the sublime with the ridiculous, mostly. æ How excited were you when Sonam Kapoor bought the movie rights to your book? She’s bought the rights to Battle for Bittora, my second book. TPTG is still up for grabs and lots of people want it - this is the stage where you flirt violently with different production houses. It’s a good stage! æ Which books or authors have inspired you along the way? Joseph Heller, Meg Cabot, Vikram Seth, Susan Howatch, JD Salinger and Georgette Heyer. æ Apart from writing, what else keeps you busy? I am obsessed with home decor, knitting, gardening and chatting with teenagers.
